Picture perfect COUPLE SAY THANK YOU TO HOSPITAL WITH A PHOTOGRAPHIC FUNDRAISER. roud parents of two and owners of Chrysalis Photography, Christopher and Allie Langham are backing a Sheffield Hospitals Charity fundraiser after being overwhelmed by the positive experience Allie had giving birth to her children, Max and Ruby, at Sheffield’s Jessop Wing. They are taking on a further charity appeal - having already donated 12 photographs to be hung throughout wards at the hospital - to thank doctors and nurses for their care, and have made a pledge to make a £20 donation to Jessop Wing for every family photo session worth £175, in a bid to raise awareness of a wonderful unit and help even more women benefit from the expertise of the city’s healthcare professionals. “I am so grateful for the fantastic care I received at the Jessop Wing during the birth of both of my children.” said Allie. “The care I received was above and beyond
P
our expectations and we will never be able to express enough gratitude. Our appeal can only ever cover a small percentage of how grateful we are.” Located in the stable courtyard within the beautiful grounds of Renishaw Hall, the Chrysalis Photography studio is pet and child friendly, and they offer comfortable sofas where you can relax in between shoots, with refreshments offered throughout. You and your family are the main focus, and every session is specifically tailored to you, so why not bring the extended family along, from baby to great grandpa. “We are extremely lucky to have such a beautiful studio for our photoshoots, but we also offer location shoots within the beautiful grounds of Renishaw Hall.” The picturesque gardens can provide the perfect backdrop for beautiful portraits that you and your family are sure to treasure for generations to come. And before your shoot,
why not enjoy a relaxing walk around the gardens, then after, indulge in a cafe lunch. Now in its 11th year, Chrysalis Photography has won many photography awards, including seven during 2017 in equine, family and dog groupings. What better way to mark a family event or simply to capture your family growing up than to invest in a family portrait session with Chrysalis Photography. Sheffield Club raises £5,800 for hospice with Sir Martyn Lewis lunch Veteran broadcaster and St Luke’s Hospice patron Sir Martyn Lewis helped raised £5,800 for the charity when he was the special guest of the Sheffield Club. The Sheffield Club provides a forum for the encouragement of contacts between its members, through regular lunches and special networking events. And Sir Martyn joined the organisation for a special lunch in support of Sheffield’s only hospice at popular city restaurant Baldwin’s Omega. “Guests enjoyed Sir Martyn’s stories of working in journalism and also his impassioned speech about how important hospice care is in Sheffield and the UK,” said St Luke’s community fundraising manager Megan Senior. “We are delighted that The Sheffield Club invited him to be their guest speaker and that the event raised such a great sum for our continued patient care.” PICTURED (L-R): St Luke’s Chief Executive Peter Hartland, Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Andrew Coombe, Sir Martyn Lewis, St Luke’s President Lady Anne Neill and Sheffield Club President David Batey 10 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

Coopers have a fleet of 30 coaches along with a fleet of 12 lorries. The head office is based at Killamarsh, on Aldred Close, which is in close proximity to Sheffield. There’s also a sister company Coopers Tours (Lincs) Ltd which is based in Grimsby, primarily covering the north east and mid-Lincolnshire and they have their own private hire department and maintenance team. Both locations have travel shops with helpful staff that book customers on holidays and day excursions.
Coopers provide holidays both in the UK and Europe along with short breaks, mystery tours and day excursions. They also have a brand new website launching soon, which will enable customers to look at holidays or day excursions and to book online – visit www.cooperstours.co.uk to browse through their options. CREAM TEAS
One lump or two? AFTERNOON TEA IS THE PERFECT CATCH UP WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY... THERE ARE SOME GREAT VENUES CLOSE BY TO SOOTHE YOUR JAM AND CREAM CRAVINGS. BY HANNAH SANDERS. ovelist Henry James said: “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea. I couldn’t have put it better myself. The delicate china cups filled with tea, delicious finger sandwiches, mini desserts and homemade scones lathered with jam and clotted cream, all enjoyed with a stunning view of the countryside – there’s just something so quintessentially British about afternoon tea. Afternoon tea was first introduced in England in the 1840s, after Anna the Duchess of Bedford suffered from afternoon hunger spells because of the long stretch between lunch and dinner. She remedied them with a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake, and began sharing this new tradition with friends. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event, and during the 1880s upper-class society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. This tradition continued throughout the years, with the 1920s marking the height of afternoon tea, complete with guests, servants, silver teapots, fine linens, musicians and of course the best tea money could buy. Nowadays, our afternoon teas are a bit more adventurous (yet they still retain their
N

traditional elements) consisting of delicious homemade sandwiches – customarily cucumber, through to ham and mustard or even goats cheese and pesto – mini desserts, hearty scones, tea and coffee, and, you can even enjoy a glass of fizz while you devour your finger sandwiches. Of course, with afternoon tea the great scone debate always surfaces. Before everyone shouts out their ‘right way’ of smearing jam, cream or/and butter onto their scones I’ll fill you in on the traditional etiquette. The customary practice dictates that when eating the scone section of afternoon tea, you should break off small pieces, topping each section with the desired amount of jam, cream or butter. Now onto the difficult part – when it comes to putting the jam and cream on, the common wisdom in Cornwall is the jam comes first, cream second while in Devon it’s the other way round. Personally, I don’t think there is a right or wrong way as whatever way you dress your scone, let’s face it, it still tastes just as good. In South Yorkshire, we are blessed with some fantastic venues in which we can enjoy afternoon tea. From The Sitwell Arms and Mosborough Hall through to Renishaw Hall and Aston Hall Hotel each one offers a wonderful afternoon option – perfect for a catch up with friends and family.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Afternoon Tea DO Try a little of each food – both sweet and savoury Avoid talking with your mouth full or taking large bites Wait until you have swallowed your food before taking a sip of tea Look into your teacup while sipping Place your napkin on the chair if you leave during the event
DON’T Use milk and lemon in tea together – the citric acid of the lemon will cause the milk to curdle Place the lemon in the teacup before adding tea Leave your spoon in the cup Move your plate more than one inch from the edge of table, and don’t push your plate away from the edge when finish Place your napkin on the table until you are ready to leave

THINK PRINTS, PALM TREES AND PINEAPPLES... THIS SUMMER’S HOME TRENDS TAKE ON A CARIBBEAN TWIST. BY LUCY HAINSWORTH. his summer’s trend consists of ornaments bursting with botanical bliss and pineapple prints, to give this season’s home a tropical twist. You’ll find plenty of palm tree and banana leaf clad homeware on the high streets right now, which are sure to give any garden party a holiday vibe. Leaf prints add a touch of nature to artificial features in the home, with lampshades and bedding making you feel like you’ve woken up in the great outdoors. You may even find birds of
T
paradise sneaking their way into homeware, with tables and chairs growing bird’s legs. The pineapples add to this tropical sensation and are usually coupled with fierce gold to give this theme a sophisticated yet playful look. Metallics are always a winner, so reinforce these with some silver of gold wall hangings. With décor like this, your house will certainly stand out from the crowd and make your summer feel a lot more vibrant and stylish whether you’re inside your home and out in the garden.

ALLOTMENTS
Morley Street allotments
‘Everything tastes better when it’s home-grown’ EVER THOUGHT OF GROWING YOUR OWN? AN ALLOTMENT IS A GREAT WAY TO ENJOY THE FRUITS OF YOUR HARD LABOUR – AND TO LEARN NEW SKILLS. AS PART OF NATIONAL ALLOTMENT MONTH, HANNAH SANDERS VISITS TWO COMMUNITY-RUN SCHEMES. llotments provide the perfect escape from the outside world, where you can while the day around socialising with friends, get your hands dirty in the earth, experiment with planting new varieties and reap the rewards of your hard-earned produce. Taking a stroll on a beautiful sunny morning with John Newman and Brian Legge – residents at Morley Street Allotments, in Walkley – I was in awe at the towering runner beans, bundles of courgettes and tomatoes, blooming flowers along with a selection of gooseberries, loganberries and tayberries. “I’ve had my allotment now for 12 years. When I first started I was a bit apprehensive because I had problems with vandals but now, reflecting on my time here, I’m really glad I’ve got it and my grandchildren love coming down and spending the day,” said Brian Legge.

“When you retire, it isn’t easy knowing what to do with yourself and having an allotment helps fill that void. It’s been brilliant for me, and I like knowing that the work I am doing is putting something back into the environment. The work is endless but rewarding and when you see the blue tits coming out of your bird boxes, or gather your first crop it makes all the hard graft worthwhile.” John Newman added: “Having an allotment is a John Newman great opportunity to learn a new skill. Both Brian and I like gardening but we also like to have a project on the go. We’ve both built Brian Legge greenhouses and Brian has not only built

sheds and a chicken run but also a community greenhouse where we can sell plants at our annual sales.” “Everything tastes better when it’s home-grown, and yes, you have to put in the time and effort to maintain your allotment, but it’s all worth it in the end – take it from someone who has one.” Morley Street Allotments are part of the Walkley Bank Allotment Society, and with their on-site shop, plant sales and newly-built greenhouse have a strong presence in the community. “What’s really exciting is the council have given us an extra bit of land which we have built the greenhouse on, and we’re planning to further develop this for the community – so we would just like to say thank you to
TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED: • Do things little and often • Dig the ground with a spade to make it level • Make beds • Plant as you go • Try growing soft fruit first • Utilise the community’s knowledge • Don’t be afraid to ask for help • Don’t be afraid to try new things What to grow: • Courgettes • Carrots • Potatoes • Runner beans • Soft fruit • Seasonal flowers Livestock allowed: • Six chickens • Two rabbits
them,” said John. “Our site also has a few community plots, which is fantastic as everyone comes down on a set day and works together on the land.” Sheffield City Council manages over 3,000 allotments over 70 sites, and are looked after by the Sheffield Allotment Federation president Michael Jordan and the committee, who also own allotments within Sheffield. Based at Moss Way Allotment, Michael has been the president for two years representing both private and council owned allotments with aims to help plot holders and potential allotmenteers enjoy and make good use of plots and the produce grown. “We want to work together to make not only Moss Way a thriving community but others within Sheffield, and help fuel environments where people help one another,” said Michael. “At Moss Way, there’s a group of eight of us including Bev and Michael Booth, Doreen Skipper, Stacey Grococ, who’s the groundsman, and his wife Claire who work to maintain the site itself. We mow the grass, trim hedges and work on community projects like the orchard, shop and soon to be functioning compostable toilet.” Michael Booth is also on the federation and with his wife has recently extended his plot size. “The second plot took us nine months to transform but that was with two of us, usually with one
person it can take between two to three years. The thing to remember is not to give up. Gardening is hardwork and everything is against you but there is nothing finer than getting the first crops of the season,” said Michael Booth. Wife Bev Booth added: “Remember when you have an allotment, you are never wrong in what you do. Some of it is trial and error. All you need to do is keep going and once you have some fruit and veg you’ll be immensely proud of yourself, and will have fallen in love with it.” Waiting times vary when it comes to allotments, and depend on where you are based. If you want an allotment put an application in and you can visit www.sheffield.gov.uk to see a full list of vacancies, prices and concessions along with getting some do’s and don’ts from The Allotment Handbook. John Newman added: “If anyone is wanting an allotment, or is on the waiting list for one then please come down to Morley Street and have a chat with us about what it’s like. “And, if people are interested and there aren’t any plots available then there is the opportunity to share or split a plot with someone – a full plot if a lot of work so if you can share and work together that’s fantastic.” For more information on the federation visit www.sa-federation.co.uk or Morley Street Allotments visit www.sheffieldenvironment.org.To apply for an allotment visit www.sheffieldgov.co.uk. MOTORING
No more diesel Volvo has announced the forthcoming arrival of the all-new S60 – the first Volvo ever to be built in the USA. The new S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel offer, signalling the company’s industry-leading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. There will be two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines available in this new S60: Volvo’s T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp, and the award-winning T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that delivers 400hp. The S60 is built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and shares infotainment and safety tech with the V60, 90 series and XC60.
THERE’S A NEW OUTLOOK FOR VOLVO AND MUCH MORE IN THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Road to success From its original launch in 2010, the A1 has been a huge success. Not only was it a very classy city car, but it was equally at home travelling the length and breadth of the country. Now we have an all-new Audi A1, starting with the Sportback variant (fivedoor). It is 56mm longer than the original A1 meaning there is more space on the inside. The boot capacity is now up 65 litres to 335 litres. Inside, the A1 is up-to-date with the latest Audi technology gubbins. Even the standard SE variant comes with a digital instrument binnacle. Engines available will be a 114bhp 1.0litre TFSI three-cylinder petrol, a 148hp 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with the cylinder on demand efficiency system (COD) and 2.0-litre 197hp TFSI.
Luxury addition Do you want the ultimate in luxury and refinement from BMW? Then look no further as we reveal the latest chapter in the BMW luxury game – the 8 Series Coupe. Sitting at the top of the food chain next to the I3, the 8 Series Coupe is one of BMW’s flagship models. With its sporty performance figures, emotive design language and state-of-theart luxury and technology levels, the 8 Series will certainly be a hit. There will be two models, the 840d xDrive and 850i xDrive. The 840d is a 3.0-litre, sixcylinder diesel creating 320bhp; 0-62mph takes 4.9 seconds and combined economy is calculated at 46.3mpg. The 850i is a 4.4-litre V8 petrol creating 530bhp; 0-62mph takes 3.7 seconds and 28.3mpg combined. Priced from £76,270.
CAFÉ CULTURE Since the launch of the DS3 back at the beginning of this decade, DS (formerly a part of Citroen) really took the fashionable supermini to the next level, giving MINI many sleepless nights. Taking inspiration from the Café Racer and Ace Café motorcycle culture of 1960s London, DS 3 Café Racer is a stylish new limited edition, featuring strong ‘Café Racer’ exterior branding, bi-tone body colour and a luxurious interior of Trinitario Brown Nappa watchstrap leather. Engines available are PureTech 110 S&S manual, PureTech 110 S&S EAT6 automatic and PureTech 130 S&S 6-speed manual. Priced from £21,305.
