PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN

Don’t stay together for the children, says Gary Crothers, solicitor advocate (higher courts civil proceedings) and family law specialist at Wosskow Brown. or many people, Christmas is an exciting time of year and a wonderful opportunity to spend extra time with friends, family and loved ones. For those experiencing relationship difficulties, however, it can bring problems into even sharper focus and highlight the need to explore a fresh start at the beginning of a new year. The latest available annual divorce statistics, which were published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in November, show that divorce was most common in couples aged between 40 and 44 – one of the most likely age groups to include parents of young children. If you are a parent considering divorce, a poll by family law organisation Resolution could help to ease your concerns about children being caught up in the process. The survey found that most children – 82 per cent – do not think that parents should stay together for their sake. The survey also revealed that a huge majority thought it was important that they did not have to choose between parents. One of the children questioned said: ‘Don’t stay together for a child’s sake, better to divorce than stay together for another few years and divorce on bad terms’. Another suggested that children ‘will certainly be very upset at the time but will often

F

realise, later on, that it was for the best.’ If you are considering divorce or are concerned about the impact the process may have on your children, it may help to speak to the Gary experts. At Wosskow Crothers Brown, we offer a free initial appointment in which we find out about your situation and explain how we can help. We can also provide a fixed-fee quote so you can budget effectively, and discuss payment plans to ease the financial burden now that legal aid is no longer available for most matters of family law. To find out more about how Wosskow Brown can help you, call your local branch and ask to speak to the family team. Ask the expert Sam Reaney, branch manager of Haybrook Crystal Peaks, offers his expert advice. How has the government’s Autumn Statement and Spending Review affected me as a home owner?

Many home owners will not have been affected by Chancellor George Osborne’s latest announcement. However, those looking to purchase a buy-to-let property, a holiday home, a house for a relative or a second home will have had a bit of a shock. From April 2016, the Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) paid by those who already own a property will rise by three per cent. To put that into context, the tax bill on a £200,000 property will leap from the £1,500 that you would pay today to £7,500 when the changes come into force next spring. Designed to make life easier for first time buyers by preventing the market being dominated by buy-to let landlords, the surcharge is also being seen as a ‘tax grab’ for the government and is forecasted to earn the treasury almost £1billion a year from 2020. This extra income, they say, will be used to double the housing budget and build 400,000 affordable homes within the next five years. However, the news – along with changes to mortgage tax relief announced in the Budget this summer – has been described as ‘catastrophic’ for the private rental sector as landlords may be forced to increase rent or provide less maintenance in order to cover their additional costs. The changes are also predicted to have an immediate impact on the residential housing market. Landlords – or home owners who own buy-to-let properties and are looking to purchase new homes for themselves – may be willing to offer more for a property in order to secure the purchase before the new SDLT rates come into effect. There is also a chance that, once the investor interest dies down and competition decreases, house prices may fall. So, if you are thinking of moving within the next few months, it may be wise to put your house on the market soon to take advantage of this potential swell in interest and get the best possible price for your home. If you have a question on any aspect of the property market, email stephanie.burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will feature the answer in a future issue. To speak to the Haybrook Crystal Peaks team, call 0114 251 1710.

PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE

LEFT: Joe Hunter in the factory

CONTINUING SUCCESS When a local business achieves 40 years of continuous trading it is a milestone worth celebrating... so let’s pop a few corks and say ‘cheers’ as we toast the continuing success story that is Sheffield Window Centre.

I

t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 40 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be.

A family affair... L-R: Ian, Sam, Amy and Ian Hunter

IMAGEmagazine 16

Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain colours including rosewood and oak. You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argon-filled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit anti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows – so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no less – as well as cylinder locks which are antipick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multi-point locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which are suitable for year-round use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. PROMOTIONSTAVES ESTATE AGENTS

Independent, family-run, successful – those are the reasons why more and more people are selling their homes through Staves Estate Agents.

I

t’s official – more people in S12 are choosing Staves Estate Agents to sell their property than any other agent. According to Rightmove statistics, of the 44 branches in the area, Staves has listed the most new properties in 2015. This is a fantastic achievement for a branch that only opened in Gleadless in January this year. “We are delighted by these figures, and it just goes to show that there is a real appetite for people wanting to use a local, independent, family-run estate agent over a larger corporate agency,” says owner Matthew Staves. “We care very much about what we’re doing and people like that we have a vested interest in selling their property and are therefore prepared to go the extra mile to ensure that the best possible results are achieved for our clients.” With an excellent sales record and an extensive portfolio of properties for sale – not only in S12 but in the surrounding areas including S20 and S13, too – both buyers and sellers are

visit service is also available. As well as this Staves have extended their lettings service with a dedicated department in branch.”Matthew believes their success stems from industry experience and knowledge of the local area. He has worked in the industry for over 20 years and Gleadless employees David Hague and Michelle Fenney Williams have lived in the area for over 40 years between them, meaning they can offer excellent first-hand knowledge and understanding of the local property market. Each member of the team is totally focussed on providing first-class customer care and client satisfaction. They understand the importance of visiting properties, and clients are often impressed to find the director of the company on their doorstep. “We always have the customer’s best interests at heart,” says Matthew. “When someone gives us an instruction to sell a property, we do our utmost to match their requirements and outdo expectations.” Whether you are looking to buy, sell or rent a property, at Staves you will receive a specialist adviser and seamless communication. Pop into the office – or give them a call – to discover their competitive rates and discuss how the experts can help you. reaping the benefits of this rapidly expanding business. The company was established by Matthew and his wife Amy in 2009 in Woodseats. Just three years ago they expanded with a branch at Dronfield, before opening the Gleadless office this year. This most recent launch proved so popular that they have already expanded further, by taking over the property next door. The spacious extension not only ensures that Staves can meet the needs of the currently buoyant market, but it has also given them a stronger presence, more on-site parking and the ability to provide more services.“They are pleased to present a new mortgage centre with appointments available five days a week, and an evening home

PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD GLAZING

The answer to your misty double glazing couldn’t be clearer – call Sheffield Glazing for replacement energy-efficient glass.

A

s the weather begins to improve, the hours of daylight extend and the flowers start to blossom, there are few greater pleasures than gazing out into the garden and looking forward to stepping outside to embrace the joys of spring. What can quickly bring this enjoyment to halt, however, are misty windows that obscure the view and make everything look a little less beautiful. But you needn’t suffer with a misty view any longer as Sheffield Glazing is on hand to replace failed units or inefficient windows and help you enjoy spring to its full extent. With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Sheffield Glazing’s owner Graham Warsop certainly knows his stuff when it comes to all things glazing. Having worked on both the manufacturing and installation sides of the business – and now specialising in installation – he knows this industry inside out and is proud to offer fantastic products at very reasonable prices. The Pilkington KS glass sealed units that Graham fits as standard are filled with argon gas and manufactured to BSI standard so you have the peace of mind that your new glass has been rigorously tested and is highly energy efficient. And as we all know by now, it’s not just our carbon footprint that increases with inefficient glazing products, but also our energy bills. “After a period of time, the seal between the two pieces of glass

in a double glazed window unit breaks down and causes a misty effect,” explains Graham. “When this happens, it means they no longer have any thermal efficiency or sound proofing and heat loss can become a big problem.” While you may think that the only solution is to fork out for a new frame as well as new glass, Graham is pleased to say that this isn’t necessary. “What I do is fit the latest energy-efficient glass into existing frames of any size. As long as there is no damage to those frames, there is no need to replace them – and this can save people a lot of money.” While frames have improved slightly over the years, they have mainly stayed the same so you can rest assured that you won’t be losing heat through old frames. Huge improvements in glazing technologies, however, are benefiting homeowners more than ever. So why wait until the glass is misty? With very competitive prices and no VAT to pay, Sheffield Glazing can offer an affordable option for new double glazing that will instantly improve the energy efficiency of your home without breaking the bank. As well as replacing the glass in windows, Graham also carries out repairs on any type of frame and any aspect of glazing, including the glass in conservatory roofs and patio door units – and he does it all to the highest standards. Give Graham at Sheffield Glazing a call to arrange your free quotation and start looking forward to a brighter view. IMAGEWARD’S NURSERIES AND GARDEN CENTRE

Take a trip to Ward’s and find everything you need to make it a very merry Christmas!

T

he festive season is in full swing, which means the time for decorating our homes is upon us. Glittering tinsel and baubles always look lovely, but it's the natural trimmings that really make the difference; scarlet poinsettia, pearly mistletoe and a good old real Christmas tree. Not only will they brighten up the house and create a real jovial feel, they'll also fill the home with the traditional festive scents of Christmastime. Once again, Ward's Nurseries and Garden Centre has embraced the festive season with open arms; not only has the centre transformed into a Christmas wonderland of illuminations, decorations and gifts, but a whole host of Christmas plants and trees have also been introduced. If you love the idea of a real Christmas tree but dread the annual needle drop, a Nordmann Fir may be what you're looking for. The Nordmann tree is known for having excellent needle retention properties as well as very attractive foliage. Whatever the size of your room, Ward’s will have a Christmas tree to suit with lots of varieties in sizes ranging from approximately four to nine feet tall, all at very reasonable prices. The team at Ward's are on hand to make sure your tree gets home in one piece – whether potted or cut and whatever the size – the netting service will make even the biggest trees fit into the smallest spaces. Alternatively, the delivery team will be happy to do all the dirty work for you and drop your chosen tree off on your doorstep. As well as the large range of Christmas trees, Ward's also offer a stunning collection of wreathes and garlands, as well as an array of flowered and berried Christmas plants. Although poinsettias are traditionally scarlet at Christmas, Ward's also stock them in cream, pink and dark pink if you want to put a modern spin on your festive decorations. cyclamen and orchids, available from Ward's can also be used to transform your home this Christmas. And it's not just decorations that Ward's do best; they also have a huge selection of gifts available for all the family, including everything from different ranges of clothing to a huge selection of books for adults and children. This year, Ward's are once again offering food hampers that can be personalised to your loved ones’ tastes. Choose anything from an extensive selection of chutneys, jams, cakes, biscuits, chocolates and fruits in alcohol etc., for the perfect present, and a member of Ward’s staff will pack and wrap it all in an attractive gift box ready to present to the lucky recipient. Decorations, plants, trees, gifts and festive foods are on your doorstep and all under one roof at Ward's Nurseries and Garden Centre, allowing you to avoid the rush and make your entire Christmas shopping experience a pleasure. IMAGEBEST WESTERN PLUS ASTON HALL HOTEL

With its stunning location and fantastic facilities, Aston Hall is the perfect venue for any kind of occasion.

A

s you drive through beautiful grounds towards the historic building, BEST WESTERN PLUS Aston Hall Hotel takes your breath away. Dating back to 1772 and set in 55 acres of land, this independently-owned hotel is a stunning venue that can meet all your needs. Aston Hall caters for corporate and leisure guests, as well as attracting day visitors for a delicious meal, a quiet drink in the bar or a wander around the beautiful gardens. It has long been a beloved venue for couples tying the knot and the beautiful marquee makes Aston Hall stand out as one of the region’s premier wedding locations. The heated marquee can accommodate weddings all year round and is self-contained with its own bar, kitchen and toilets. With so much space, Aston Hall can comfortably accommodate two weddings a day – one in the marquee and one in the main building – each completely separate with their own facilities and gardens. And a lovely pagoda was recentlyinstalled in the gardens for outdoor weddings. Aston Hall has character in abundance and little quirks set it apart from other hotels. For example, the function rooms are named after Aston Martin cars and the bedrooms in the original part of the house are named after cutlery styles, as a nod to the region’s heritage. The largest function room is the Lagonda Suite, which can accommodate up to 300 people. Or for a more intimate affair, the Bamford Restaurant is cosy and serves delicious, homemade food. The function rooms can be used for a variety of events,

IMAGEEATING OUT Lamb jal jhinga

Hurry with the curry

According to locals, Mosborough has been crying out for an Indian restaurant. Has Muktar Ali succeeded in filling the spice gap? We sent Fiona Barber to find out.

“A

bout time; I’ve been waiting years for this,” my friend Charlotte enthused over a delightful portion of poppadums and pickles. Far from having never experienced the joys of Indian cuisine – as you might be thinking – she is in fact quite the foodie. But living locally to Mosborough, she felt one thing it was missing was a dine-in Indian restaurant. There were many locals who felt the same, so it was no surprise when, six months ago, owner and chef Muktar Ali (known locally as Ali) opened The Vine Indian Cuisine, and it was welcomed with open arms and eager customers. The restaurant sits on the former site of The Vine Tavern, and a three-month renovation changed the space into a more open-plan setting while retaining some original features including the low-beamed ceilings. Ali has owned restaurants in various locations including Dronfield and Tickhill, but his dream was always to open a restaurant in Mosborough. “I don’t really know why,” he confesses. “It’s just a nice area with great people and I wanted to give them proper, fresh Indian food.” To make sure Ali fulfils his own high standards, he works in the kitchen seven days a week and spends daytimes prepping ingredients for the evening diners. Following the poppadums and homemade dips and pickles, our next taste of Ali’s cooking came in the form of tandoori king prawns and a sheik kebab. The four prawns were a fiery orange-red colour and tasted just as good as they looked, while the meaty sheik kebabs were packed with flavour, proving Ali’s belief in making everything fresh is well worth the effort.

IMAGEmagazine 32

The main menu at The Vine is extensive and many of the chef’s specials are unique to the restaurant, making it ideal if you’re looking for something a bit different. We opted for jal jhinga lamb from the Vine specials and a classic chicken bhuna from the traditional menu. The tender lamb came in a tomato, garlic and chilli sauce and was and topped with caramelised onions, which created a delicious crunchy texture. The chicken bhuna was just as tasty, with generous pieces of chicken, a thick sauce and fresh peppers. Accompanied by side orders of tarka dahl, mushroom rice, and a garlic and cheese naan, it was the ideal Friday night feast. While Ali takes care of the cooking, longtime friend and colleague Afaz Mohammed (known as Uncle Afaz to many) runs front of house. “He is the best waiter and I have so much respect for him,” gushes Ali. Ali’s sons Mohammed Iqbal and Mohammed Imran also work at the restaurant, along with Bash, who has worked for Ali for 18 years. “I like to look after my staff; we really are like one big family,” says Ali. “I’m very happy here.” It seems opening The Vine Indian Cuisine has not only fulfilled Ali’s dreams, but also the needs of many curry-loving locals. And, if you don’t feel like dining out, The Vine even delivers to the surrounding areas. * Bookings available for Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day * Private function room also available for parties * A weekly buffet night will be available from January

IMAGEEATING OUT

THE BEAST UNLEASHED

It was a man v sausage showdown at Swanky Frank’s… and the hot dog won. Words and photography: Stephanie Burns

I

n a quiet corner of Woodseats, set back from the busy Chesterfield Road, there lies a diner that, despite its discreet location, manages to draw in crowds from all over Sheffield. And, as my partner Ben and I discovered on a typically bustling Friday night, Swanky Frank’s’ secret is no real secret at all – great big plates of American food to satisfy even the hardiest appetites have been going down a storm for years. Ben had clearly missed the memo about Swanky’s famously huge portion sizes. While I knowingly tucked into a carb-light starter of chicken wings – just the right level of spice and a lovely Caesar dip to dunk them in – he eagerly wolfed down a great big pile of pulled pork nachos. The plate groaned with tortilla chips smothered in sour cream, guacamole, cheese, salsa, jalapenos and homemade pulled pork and I wondered how he was ever going to manage another two courses. Oh how I laughed when, minutes into our mains, a waiter came over to check how Ben was proceeding with his giant hot dog – a 12inch, 6oz pork sausage, piled high with chilli and onions and loaded into a freshly baked bun. The reason for the waiter’s interest? Diners brave enough to polish off every last morsel of this beast are awarded a medal for their efforts. Needless to say, he failed spectacularly. Over on my side of the table, my halo slipped clean off as I tucked into a calzone with vigour – all thoughts ofbeing healthy long forgotten. This traditional folded-over pizza base was fit to burst with tomato, mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, red onion and ham and topped with a rich Napoli tomato sauce, and I enjoyed every sinful mouthful. Yes, there are healthier options on the menu, but who really visits Swanky’s craving a salad?

Grease played on loop in the background and the stereo kicked out both old and new classics (think Dire Straits followed by Kings of Leon). The scene was very much set and a Lynchburg Lemonade followed by a bottle of Brooklyn lager completed our

authentic America diner experience. Well, almost. I’ve seen enough American films (this screening of Grease was perhaps my 20th viewing) to know that nothing says diner quite like an ice-cream to share – served in a tall glass with two long spoons, you know the drill. It’s the nearest thing to romance you can find here and we looked every bit the stereotype; jostling each other’s spoons out of the way to scoop up more cream/icecream/strawberries than the other. If you’re looking for a good time, a buzzing atmosphere and a great choice of deliciously wicked food, there are few more perfect locations than Swanky Frank’s. But if you want to take home one of those coveted medals, I’d advise you to skip lunch. And maybe breakfast, too, come to think of it.

IMAGEINTERVIEW

DAME FOR A LAUGH

Pantomime season is back and sees Damian Williams return to the Lyceum to cause chaos – and (hopefully) lots of laughs.

Words: Fiona Barber

B

utch, bold and boisterous; Damian Williams has been causing slapstick chaos on the Lyceum stage as a panto dame for the last seven years. This festive season, his reign continues as he plays Widow Twankey in the fun-packed family pantomime, Aladdin. The demand for pantomime seems to be as strong as ever (last year’s Dick Whittington was seen by over 44,000 people) and Damian believes they remain so popular because it is something the whole family can be involved in. “It is great entertainment and a great family Christmas tradition,” he says. “No other country has got pantomime, and we’re the only ones that do it well, because we’re the only ones that really understand it. A panto is often the first time kids will ever go to a theatre, so it’s quite important.” Damian recalls his Nan taking him to the theatre as a young boy. They went to see Robinson Crusoe with Charlie Drake in it. “I was only five or six but I still remember some of the gags and what the dame did, so it made a big impression,” he admits. Theatre was always something he was interested in and Damian’s first taste of the limelight came aged just 15, in a Bugsy Malone production at his local theatre. This marked the beginning of a long and successful career. He explains: “The guy that directed it ran a rep company and he said to me: when you leave school, if you’d like to go into the business, don’t go to drama school, come and join the rep company and we’ll go on tour. I was taught by him, by watching other actors and I learnt my craft that way. In my first panto when I was 16, I played the ghost in the ghost gag and then after that I started playing villains. I played villains for years and then I got offered the chance to play a dame.” Damian admits the villain is a great role to play, but he prefers the dame because of his love of comedy. “You can go in and cause chaos and get the laughs,” he says. “The thing I like about playing a dame is that you can have contact with the audience and you can be on their side. I like to play it as though I’m part of

IMAGEmagazine 40

the audience and you know, you can get away with murder.” Of course, no dame would be complete without a set of fabulous outfits and Damian confesses he has over 100 costumes stored away, which he describes as a playground of wigs, feathers and slippers. To make sure Widow Twankey was dressed for the performance of a lifetime, earlier in the year Damian met with Helga Wood, who designs and makes the costumes, to discuss what they had in store. While dames and designers might spend months planning costumes, Damian admits that wardrobe malfunctions are simply unavoidable and says: “I’ve had things fall down, pop off and things split, but you just get on with it.” While the dame role has been a major part of Damian’s acting career for 20 years, he has also been involved in many other productions and acknowledges playing his all-time favourite comedian Tommy Cooper in Being Tommy Cooper was a particular highlight. “I like all the old-school comics like Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Morecambe and Wise,” he says. “I was brought up on people like Laurel and Hardy; they were funny, funny men and that’s very rare these days. People like Lee Evans come quite close to that style but you don’t get that anymore; it’s less physical.” This physical comedy is very much still part of panto and Damian confirms there will be plenty of slosh and mess in this year’s Aladdin. He has been involved in a great number of pantos including Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Dick Whittington, Jack and The Bean Stalk and Aladdin, but he says there is still one he has yet to tick off. “I would love to do Mother Goose here. We have talked about it, so I’m hoping in the next few years we’ll be able to do it.” You can see Damian and the rest of the cast – including Chris Gascoyne (Peter Barlow from Coronation Street), Alex Winter (CBeebies), and writer and entertainer Hilary O’Neil – in this year’s spectacular production at the Lyceum from 4 December until 3 January.

“The thing I like about playing a dame is that you can have contact with the audience and you can be on their side. I like to play it as though I’m part of the audience and you know, you can get away with murder.”

IMAGEWHAT’S HAPPENING

Ball raises funds for Children’s Hospital More than 600 generous charity supporters turned out for a star-studded charity ball and raised £111,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital in the process. The sold-out Winter Ball, held every two years by The Children’s Hospital Charity, was this year hosted by charity patron and TV and radio presenter Dan Walker at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, with guests including Jessica Ennis-Hill, Pete McKee and Matt Fitzpatrick. The event raised money for an intraoperative 3T MRI scanner, which will make the neurosurgery department one of the most advanced centres in the country. An auction, led by Blundells auctioneer Lucy Crapper, featured prizes including a Singapore F1 experience, dinner at Coutts with Michael Palin and a behind-the-scenes day at Football Focus.

Jess backs cancer plans Jessica Ennis-Hill visited Weston Park Hospital, of which she is a patron, to see how support from the hospital’s dedicated charity has enabled the improvement of vital facilities to benefit cancer patients across South Yorkshire and beyond. During her visit, Jessica chatted to some of the patients receiving treatment, including Jacqueline Gauton from Handsworth (pictured). Jessica said: “It was an absolute honour to visit Weston Park Hospital and see just how many improvements have been made to the facilities since last time I was here.” To find out more about the work of the cancer charity visit www.wphcc.org.uk.

Beighton’s big switch-on Beighton Gala Princess Megan Davison switched on Beighton Christmas tree lights in front of an audience of 250 people. The event, which was organised by Beighton Environment Group, Beighton Village Development Trust and Reignhead Primary School, also featured carols by Woodhouse Prize Band.

Christmas at Crystal Peaks Crystal Peaks Church is hosting a traditional carol service on Sunday 20 December in the centre’s food court. Shoppers will be able to enjoy complimentary seasonal delicacies before joining in a selection of favourite carols. “We hear a lot at this time of year about commercialism and exploitation, that the true meaning of Christmas is forgotten amongst the business and the busy-ness,” said the Rev Stephen Horton of Crystal Peaks Church. “But Crystal Peaks is one shopping centre in South Yorkshire that is doing its bit to keep some of the tradition of Christmas alive.” www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

IMAGECHRISTMAS

THE REAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

Dr Patrick Harding

As we prepare to deck the halls with holly, Phoebe Seymour meets the man who knows exactly what makes it the season to be jolly…

W

hen you hang tinsel on a Christmas tree, pull a cracker or get merry at the office party, do you ever stop to think about why we celebrate Christmas in the way we do? The Nativity is a huge part of Christmas, but the festival has slowly changed, adapting to more recent traditions and

customs to become the Christmas we know today. And what about our other traditions such as Christmas trees in our homes, the idea that Christmases should be white and the origins of Santa Claus? Where do all these customs come from? Former University of Sheffield lecturer

and author of The Christmas Book, Dr Patrick Harding has been demystifying our festive customs for the past 20 years. In his book, Patrick explains where all these customs come from, but before we get into all the weird and wonderful reasons why we celebrate Christmas in the way we do, let’s start with the birth of Jesus.

Words: Phoebe Seymour

THE NATIVITY “The accounts may have been slightly changed over 2,000 years, but what I like to do is see if there is any science to back the nativity story up,” says Patrick. It shouldn’t come as much of a shock that Jesus wasn’t born on 25 December, nor was he born on what we think to be the year 0AD. After much research, Patrick discovered that Jesus was actually born in September 7BC. For Patrick, the most important part of the nativity story is the star, which wasn’t a star at all. David Hughes, an astronomer from The University of Sheffield, introduced Patrick to the idea of triple conjunctions. These occur when Jupiter and Saturn align in the constellation of Pisces, creating a light that would have looked like a bright star. The magi (or wise men) who followed this ‘star’ may have even realised the

IMAGEmagazine 44

significance of this rare event, as Jupiter represents the king of the gods, Saturn signifies the land of Palestine and Pisces is the sign of the zodiac which represents the Jews. Combine this with the fact that one of these triple conjunctions took place in 7BC

and that scientists have worked out that Jesus was born between 8 and 6BC, and this fits Patrick’s theory. “Of course, it sounds silly to say Jesus was born in 7BC, but does it matter? I just look at 25 December as Jesus’s official birthday, a bit like the queen,” says Patrick.

CHRISTMAS BEFORE CHRISTIANITY So why do we celebrate Christmas on 25 December? Those who think our customs are all centred around Christianity may be surprised. “The 25th is the most important day for a competing religion called Mithraism,” says Patrick. “If you believe in the teachings of Mithras, your god is the sun and what I find interesting is that the 25th is just after the shortest day. “If you believe god is in the sun, you get a bit upset because your god isn’t getting out of bed very early but as soon as it starts rising again, it means god is still there. So followers of Mithras may very well have looked out the window and said ‘Our sun is risen!’” Roman Emperor Constantine followed Mithraism before converting to Christianity, but the date and many other Christmas customs were carried over from other religious festivals. The Romans would celebrate the god Saturn with a festival called Saturnalia from 17 to 24 December, a time of overeating (saturnus means plenty) and general boisterousness as well as a time for visiting

friends and exchanging presents. Patrick explains in his book, “It was also a time for greater sexual freedom, the latter no doubt stimulated by an excessive consumption of alcohol. The ‘goings on’ at Christmas parties in the 21st century pale by comparison.” Who’d have thought that even our Christmas party shenanigans are a long-standing festive tradition?

SANTA, DRUGS AND ST NICHOLAS’S GOLD… Over the years Santa Claus, Father Christmas and St Nicholas have all combined to create one big fat figure in a red and white suit who delivers presents to children. When the Dutch immigrants landed in New York (originally New Amsterdam) in the 17th century, they brought Sinter Claes (or Sinterklaas) with them. He was a legendary figure with characteristics similar to St Nicholas, whilst the idea of Father Christmas started in Germany with the Norse god Odin, who would ride an eight-legged horse through the sky and fill children’s boots with treats. And then there was 4th century figure Saint Nicholas, who originated in Turkey. “There’s a story about a friend of St Nicholas who couldn’t afford his three daughters’ weddings,” explains Patrick. “So, St Nicholas www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

IMAGECHRISTMAS throws a bag of gold through each daughter’s window. However, the youngest daughter has her wedding in the winter. She shuts her window, so he climbs up onto the roof and drops the final bag of gold down the chimney.” Lapland has also played a huge part. Tribes who made their living off reindeer in Northern Lapland would live in yurts with small openings to let in visitors and let out smoke. When people were ill, witch doctors would enter through these chimney-like entrances and deliver gifts of healing. Patrick also explains why our modern day Santa is represented as ‘merry’. “In Lapland you can’t easily make alcohol because of the low temperatures,” explains Patrick. “But they realised that the red and white mushroom is hallucinogenic and if you take it, you get the feeling that you are leaving your body and flying through the air – ho, ho, ho!” The red and white of the mushrooms may very well have triggered the colour scheme of today’s Santa suit, but it was also Tolkien who influenced this change when he posted Christmas letters to his children with illustrations of a red Father Christmas. Then in 1931, Coca-Cola cemented the idea, with a Santa wearing a red top and trousers with a white fur trim to match their logo, which has captured the public’s imagination ever since.

JUST LIKE THE ONES I USED TO KNOW As we move away from the nativity story and the true meaning of Christmas with its customs changing generation by generation, are we losing sight of what it’s all about? “I always say to people, Christmas never stays the same but I think that’s why it has been so successful,” says Patrick. “Even if we are not Christian we can celebrate it.” Patrick’s years of research have done nothing to take the magic out of his family’s Christmases. If anything, it has helped him not to take this often stressful

Wondering where our other traditions come from? Dr Patrick Harding reveals more about our Christmas customs… Holly, ivy and mistletoe – They’re all evergreen and signify the eternal nature of Jesus. The red berries on holly represent blood and the leaves are Jesus’s crown of thorns. Christmas trees – Many German immigrants already put up Christmas trees in Britain and they were used by the royal family 50 years prior to Prince Albert bringing them over from Germany, but after a picture of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children, stood in front of a Christmas tree was published in the Illustrated London News in 1848, the decoration soon became popular throughout British households. White Christmases – Writer Charles Dickens was born into something of a mini ice age in London and his Christmases were always snowy. A Christmas Carol was a huge part of a Victorian Christmas revival and many customs from this novel have survived today. Cranberries – In the 90s, the US had a glut of cranberries left over from Thanksgiving so decided to convince Britain to eat them with their turkeys too. Delia Smith’s popular Christmas cookery book came out soon after and was filled with recipes full of cranberries. Most supermarkets sold out and the fruit became a national hit.

time too seriously. “My kids have left now. It is important to me and my wife as a family time, but if either of our children wants to go to their prospective boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s families for Christmas, it doesn’t bother us because one of the sad things I find about Christmas now is the arguments and the ill feeling that goes on. “It shouldn’t be like that, it should be a time when people relax and enjoy themselves, eat a bit too much, and drink a bit too much, so we try to be laid back about it.” So what is the true meaning of Christmas for Patrick? “Christmas is a time when the difference between the haves and the haves not is very obvious. I think it is a time when one should reflect on the number of people, especially up north, who are in need of food banks. “I’ve dedicated this book to my father-inlaw, Jack Binney, who was every bit as generous as Father Christmas, and there are a lot of other people who are generous and who give. The thing about St Nicholas is he gave without making a fuss about it. The daughters in the story didn’t know where the gold had come from.” So don’t be a humbug this Christmas. Bask in one of our many festive traditions and embrace your inner Father Christmas. Whatever part or version of the Christmas story you choose to follow and however many years have gone by, the message remains the same; celebrate in style and give as much as you can to others.

IMAGEMOTORING

Two’s company The wait is finally over. BMW has finally released details upon its most eagerly anticipated model in recent times. The M2 looks like a very aggressive beast thanks to a distinctive body kit, wider tracks – front and rear axles from M3 and M4 – and quad exhausts giving the impression of a much more taught and purposeful machine. The engine is a beefed-up version of the unit found in the M235i, meaning a single turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six producing 370hp and a maximum of 369lb ft of torque. It’s available with a sixspeed manual or a seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox and is driven exclusively through the rear wheels via an electronic differential. 0-62mph times are 4.5 and 4.3 seconds respectfully.

A high-powered small BMW grabs the headlines in this month’s round-up, writes Jordan Cutforth.

Racing pedigree

In the black Skoda has introduced a new addition to its Citigo range. It’s called the Black Edition and it’s for those wanting a tad more style from their Citigo without forking out the extra for the Monte Carlo trim. Additions to the Black edition include 15-inch black Auriga alloy wheels, Sunset privacy glass for the rear windows, a choice of Deep Black or Candy White paint and body-coloured door mirrors. It also includes Skoda’s Portable Infotainment Device (PID), which controls the likes of the satellite navigation, Bluetooth and the multimedia player. Manual air-conditioning comes as standard too, as well as four additional loudspeakers and a multimedia holder. Only the 59hp 1.0-litre petrol is available for this car. Prices are £9,990 (3-door) and £10,340 (5-door). Available now.

Yet another special edition of the Abarth 500 rolls of the production line. It’s called the 595 Yamaha Factory Racing Edition – yes, they really did call it that – and it’s to celebrate Abarth’s position as the official sponsor and car supplier of the FIM MotoGP championship. Created in partnership with Yamaha, the car is fitted with a lower suspension set up with some slick new Koni shock absorbers and a very purposeful Monza exhaust system which sounds the real deal. Other additions include 17-inch matt-black alloys, darkened windows and a special Yamaha Factory Racing badge. It comes with a 160hp 1.4-litre turbocharged engine and a five-speed manual gearbox. 0-62mph comes in 7.4 seconds with a combined economy figure of 47.1mpg.

ST-riking new addition After the release of the all-new Astra hatchback, we have news of an estate version. It’s called the Sports Tourer and its set for a March launch priced from £16,585 – approximately £1,870 less expensive spec for spec than the outgoing model. It’ll come with the same trim levels as the hatchback, bar Energy (Design, Tech Line, SRi and Elite) with Design being the entry level spec and Elite being the most luxurious. The Sports Tourer will come with Vauxhall’s radical OnStar connect system which acts as your own personal assistant (not available on Design trim sadly). Petrol engine highlights include a 197hp 1.6-litre and the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo unit.
