PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN
Wosskow Brown are ready to help smooth the deal when you’ve found your dream home.
S
pring is just around the corner and with it will come a swathe of new property transactions as more and more people look to buy and sell their homes. Whether you are looking to buy or sell, Wosskow Brown Solicitors is on hand to help with all the legalities. The firm’s team leader of the Residential Property department, Nicola Stone, explains what homeowners can expect in 2015. “Last year was a very busy one for local conveyancers, and it is already looking as though 2015 will be the same. “The local estate agents may say there are not enough properties coming on to the market to replace the stock already sold, and the lenders might say that applications are down, but the spring is coming and there is nothing like a sunny weekend to get buyers out looking for new homes. “To help homeowners enjoy smooth transactions, conveyancers now use technology more than ever, which speeds up the process and helps to keep the costs down. “Government schemes are also helping to boost the property market. Ninety-five per cent mortgages are being granted again, under the Guaranteed Deposit Scheme. This is great news for first time buyers who may have struggled to save the large
sums needed to purchase their home. “In addition, the Help to Buy Equity Loan benefits not only first time buyers, but also families who need to move to accommodate growing families but who don’t have enough equity in their house. They only need a five per cent deposit (which can come from the existing house) and the government will lend 20 per cent interest-free for five years, making the required mortgage 75 per cent. “Though many families are benefiting from this scheme, it also impacts on the whole neighbourhood as it is only applicable to new houses, which generates much-needed employment and brings new spending into the community. “Most buyers are also benefiting from the changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax, making now a really good time to buy – and therefore also a very good time to sell.” For more information on how Wosskow Brown can help with your move, call Nicola at the Attercliffe Road head office on 0114 256 6587, or pop into your local branch on Gleadless Road. PROMOTIONPLACES GYM
After a major revamp and relaunch, Places Gym Health Club has everything you need for a whole new you.
P
laces Gym Health Club, on Crystal Peaks Retail Park, has been undergoing some exciting changes of late and was relaunched as Places Gym in June 2014. Originally called Sam Jones, the club opened in 2000 and has offered low cost, high quality fitness options to the people of Sheffield for the past 15 years. As well as being rebranded, the gym has also undergone a refurbishment, invested in updated gym equipment and introduced two simplified membership options. The club is run by Places for People Leisure – it is the first Places Gym and the first of many in the UK. The upgrade began at the end of 2013 when the gym invested in £300,000 worth of new, state-of-the-art equipment. The upgraded club is truly impressive, with a separate indoor cycling room and large dedicated free weight, resistance and cardiovascular workout areas. There is also a flexible functional space upstairs, a V Plate area and two large dance studios. Places Gym has over 40 group exercise classes on offer every week. They include all the regulars you would expect like Piloxing and aerobics, as well as some exciting new additions like boxercise and FitSteps®, a dance fitness class created by the professionals at BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. New members will complete an induction with a personal trainer before using the equipment and these are booked online as part of the sign up process when joining through the website. And, no matter what time you visit, there are always
staff on-hand to help unlike some other low cost gyms. Continuing their history of offering great value for money, there are new membership packages* in place for both new and existing members of Places Gym. The cheaper option is the gym only membership that allows unlimited access to the gym for £19.99 per month. Or for £34 a month, you can enjoy a full membership, which offers unlimited access to the gym plus all the group exercise classes. Moving with the times, the recent building works have seen the gym’s reception removed and replaced with state-of-the-art fingerprint recognition entry pods. It’s now more secure and easier than ever to work out whenever you like. Members must first register their fingerprint at the gym during their induction and then they are free to come and go as they please within opening hours. Despite the changes, regular members will be pleased to hear that the Headlines Elite hair salon, Revive beauty studio, and Characters coffee shop have all remained at the new Places Gym and are all open to non-members. Visit the new Places Gym website for more information and frequently asked questions, as induction bookings and membership sales are all done online now. Places Gym will be open Monday to Friday 6.30am-10pm and Saturday to Sunday 8am-6pm. IMAGEFEATURE A good read… Greg Dyke settles down with his favourite magazine
Words: Fiona Barber
IT’S GRAND UP NORTH! Greg Dyke’s got faith in the future of Sheffield – and he’s got big plans for one of the city’s ‘unloved’ hotels.
A
lready the owner of the Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel and Whirlowbrook Hall, Greg Dyke is certainly no stranger to the Sheffield hospitality scene. But, in December last year, he expanded his business once again by snapping up the Cutlers Hotel on George Street. I went along to find out what has made this Middlesex-born gent fall in love with our fair city. It turns out he has always liked the north of England. “I went to university in Yorkshire and I think Sheffield’s a city on the up. It came from quite a low base because it went through a cultural change, but it has the potential to grow,” he said. This most recent move came about after he heard the Cutlers Hotel had got into financial difficulty. “It was in the hands of the administrator and was up for sale,” he said. “I’ve got a good management team, good staff and I like Sheffield, so I thought: let’s buy another one.” Future plans for the venue include a revamp to make it a top city centre hotel. “The exterior design needs sorting, but the glass windows are beautiful. It feels a bit unloved at the minute and we want to make it feel loved.” With a prime location close to the theatres, the O2 academy and many restaurants, the hotel is unlikely to expand its own restaurant facilities, although there will be breakfast and bar snacks available. Besides this planned acquisition, it seems everything else that occurs in Greg’s life happens by chance, or on impulse. Even buying Mosborough Hall came about accidentally because the person to whom he lent money to buy it got into
IMAGEmagazine 16
financial difficulty, so Greg took it on. “I like doing eccentric things. I bought a fishing lake in Hampshire because I used to go fishing with my father as a kid,” he said nonchalantly. As well as his many business ventures and role as chairman at the Football Association, Greg is also chancellor of The University of York and chairman of the British Film Institute (BFI). Juggling so many tasks at once would prove impossible for most, but Greg says he has that sort of mind and enjoys keeping active with multiple projects ongoing. The tycoon is 67 now and his position at The University York concludes this year. He will also finish at the BFI next year. Sounding slightly at a loss he says: “I’ll suddenly have some time on my hands.” There’s nothing to say that Greg won’t fill the spare time with another project though. “I keep telling everybody I’ll pack it all in at 70 and just have a nice life, but nobody believes me.” It’s no surprise either; he said he’d retire at 60 when he was 57. In a moment of serious reflection, he admits: “There is a moment at which you say ‘I don’t want to work this hard any more.’ But I do enjoy it. I think there comes an age where you’re not as effective though – and then you’re dangerous.”

Getting married? Then you need to think about making a Will to protect your partner’s future.
W
ith the wedding season upon us, most brides and grooms-to-be are thinking about the big day; seating plans, music choices and menus – and rightly so. But aside from the excitement, it’s also essential to consider how getting married will effect your Will. A Will written before you tie the knot is null and void unless it is written in contemplation of a marriage. For example, without a contemplation declaration, if a couple had Wills drafted before they were married and then one of them died, the Will would be void. But what happens then? Without a Will the law decides how your estate will be distributed, which may not be how you want it to be. Each year, the state receives vast funds from those who have passed away, simply because they did not have a Will. PROMOTIONTHE BRIDGE INN
As The Bridge Inn goes from strength to strength, owners Steve and Gill are looking forward to a new challenge.
F
our years ago, Steve Lee and Gill Weaver acquired The Bridge Inn (pictured) at Ridgeway and transformed the neglected venue into a thriving centre of the community. Steve and Gill spent several years running pubs in London, including the iconic Swiss Cottage venue, but returned to Sheffield after hearing that their beloved pub had fallen into disrepair and was up for lease. The Bridge Inn was always very dear to its owners’ hearts as it was at this charming country pub that Steve and Gill did their courting back in the day. “When we arrived home, the pub was a mess and was all boarded up. It was such a shame,” said Gill. “We built the business up from nothing and made it the success it is today. It is now a nice, happy place to visit and is very much at the heart of the community.” Together, they breathed life back into the neglected venue and The Bridge Inn re-opened in 2011. The pub quickly earned a reputation as the place to go for real beer, delicious food and great company. The Bridge Inn offers tasty homemade meals freshly prepared on the premises using locally sourced produce, along with a fantastic selection of real ales. Once again a thriving pub in the centre of its community,
The Bridge Inn has played host to theme nights and private functions for all occasions, as well as being the final destination for many walkers exploring the beautiful woodland trails nearby. The Bridge Inn has also hosted a family fun day every September – complete with a raffle, stalls, pony rides, a DJ and singer – to raise money for local children’s hospice Bluebell Wood. In total, the pub has raised over £5,000 for the worthy cause. But, after much success, the time has now come for Steve and Gill to move on to pastures new. From March, the couple will take over the running of The Albert Inn at Woodthorpe and there will be new management at The Bridge Inn. “Running The Albert Inn is a great opportunity and one that was too good to pass up,” said Gill. “It is a new challenge for us and it also gives me the chance to take a step back and enjoy a bit more free time. We’re not going far though and would love for our regular customers to visit us at our new premises.” The Albert Inn is located at 6 Woodthorpe Road, Woodthorpe, Mastin Moor, Chesterfield, S43 3BZ. The last hurrah
From gastronomic tours to relaxing spa retreats, Fiona Barber looks at the changing face of the stag and hen do.
T
he days of grooms-to-be waking up minus clothes or dignity and of brides-to-be decorated with learner plates, tiaras and garters are long gone. Over the last decade traditional stag and hen parties – the debauched soirées of brides and grooms – have become
more sophisticated and less booze based. For ladies the industry has even invented a new phrase for it: a swan party. With more hens and stags opting for a weekend of relaxation, or adventure and entertainment, instead of a night of drunken table dancing, the stakes are
higher than ever. Organising the event in question comes with immense pressure. So if you are feeling the strain or are stuck for ideas, then read on for Image’s suggestions of how to keep your stags, hens, brides and grooms entertained on the trip of a lifetime.
Spas If relaxing in a Jacuzzi ‘til you wrinkle like a prune, being slathered in mud, and massaged until you’re knot-free is your idea of heaven – then a spa break is the answer. Despite Croatia being well known for its gorgeous coastlines and historical past, hidden away in the hills are numerous toplice – thermal spas or hot springs. Though popular year round, thermal spas are especially appropriate once the temperature falls, inviting you to seek relief from the cold, in warm, health-boosting pools. When you’re tired of soaking, enjoy a healing mud treatment. This mineral-enriched mud, with a temperature of about 40 degrees is thickly spread over the body and after several minutes, is washed off with mineral water. If you’re not a fan of the mud there are plenty other massages and spa treatments to choose from. www.wellbeingescapes.com thehealthyholidaycompany.co.uk

Skiing For those looking for a bit of action – no not that kind – hitting the slopes could be the perfect way to spend the days, before returning to a luxurious chalet. It doesn’t matter if some members of the group have never skied before – classes are available to get to grips with the basic skills and the more experienced in the group can help others out – a fantastic way to exercise, bond and have fun. The French Alps have long been a favourite destination for British skiers looking for a luxury ski holiday and with a fine choice of exclusive hotels and sumptuous private chalets, combined with excellent ski opportunities and facilities along with stylish in-resort boutiques and it isn’t hard to see why. On a luxury skiing holiday to France, you can choose from a number of options. Whether you like your skiing to come with plenty of scope and accessibility, such as those of Les Trois Valees, the world’s largest skiing area, and L’ Espace Killy, or you prefer the more varied terrain of places like Chamonix and Megeve, you’ll not be disappointed. The laid-back continental atmosphere certainly adds to the appeal and in true French style the appreciation of fine cuisine and leisurely lunches play an important part of any visit to the region. crystalski.co.uk/luxury-ski-holidays www.elegantresorts.co.uk
Hire an island Finding your own slice of paradise for the perfect stag or hen party is no easy task. Locating a destination that offers plenty of adventure, cool drinks and a good serving of sunshine for a completely exclusive getaway is difficult – but what about hiring an island that is exclusively yours? Think Castaway in Tahiti, first-class luxury in the Bahamas, or enjoy the tropical climate of Florida. Arrive in style in a helicopter, snorkel with tropical fish, enjoy a range of water sports, play tennis. Do whatever you like really, because there’s just you, your party and a few helping hands – like your own private chef – to ensure this is the best possible holiday ever. stagweb.co.uk rent.privateislandsonline.com
Drink For lovers of fine wine, a tasting holiday could be just what you’re looking for. Choose a tour that includes special visits to the cellars of winemakers and be treated to private tastings with the winemakers themselves. Enjoy gourmet and regional food, deliciously matched to the wines. Experience dining as a private guest at a bodega, winery or renowned Bordeaux chateau – one of the ultimate experiences that you can have on a wine tour and be guided by one of the world’s great experts to the ‘unvisitable’ domaines in Burgundy. In France visit the beautiful vineyards of Alsace as well as Rhone or Burgundy, and drink luxurious bubbles in Champagne. In Italy, visit top growers in Trentino, Sicily or Tuscany. Or perhaps you’d rather go to Chile, look at the origin of wine in Georgia, or explore Barolo’s cru vineyards on a vineyard walk in Piedmonte. Wherever you go, you’re sure to discover and experience a new side of wine you never knew existed. You’ll return home a master of smelling and swilling, and will be able to impress friends with your knowledge on food and wine matching. winetours.co.uk grapeescapes.net

Eat If food needs to take centre stage, a gourmet holiday – where you’ll discover how some mouth-watering ingredients are produced, taste regional specialities and explore the delights of gourmet restaurants – is ideal. Visit producers of local speciality food and gain an insight into how they are made or found. Grasp the rare opportunity to go truffle hunting in Piedmonte. As well as tasting the produce, don’t forget to buy some goodies to take home in order to be able to re-create some of these wonderful flavours in your own kitchens. At meals taste the best regional wines that match the food. Gourmet tours don’t necessarily mean an endless stream of highclass restaurants – it can equally be excellent fresh, local produce prepared in a traditional way. activegourmetholidays.com gourmetontour.com

IMAGEMOTHER’S DAY
All over the world, people are preparing to show their mothers how much they care…but how do other countries mark Mothering Sunday? Hannah Pearson finds out.
M
other’s Day is coming – Sunday 15 March if you need reminding – which means it’s time to start thinking about what gift will surprise Mum and what you can do to show her how much you care. The tradition of dedicating a day to celebrating how fantastic our mums are dates back centuries – but did you know that England was the first country in the world to dedicate a day for mothers way back in the 1600s? Mother’s Day celebrations in the UK take place on the fourth Sunday of the Christian fasting period of Lent. Since the Lent days are not fixed, the date changes every year. Mother’s Day came to be celebrated in the UK in the 17th century. It was known as Mothering Sunday and can be traced back to medieval times when children from poor families were sent to work as domestic servants and apprentices in rich households. Once a year during Lent these children were given a day off to visit their home church and worship the Virgin Mary. After returning to the church of their home town they would then see their mothers, usually for the first time in months. It was customary to present their mum with flowers they had picked along the way or make a rich almond cake, known as Mothering Cake or Simnel Cake. The holiday even used to be known as Refreshment Sunday because the strict Lent fasting rules were put aside for the day. Today, the original meaning of Mothering Sunday has been lost and Mother’s Day in the UK is similar to that of other countries, where children usually give gifts of flowers and chocolates. The tradition of Mothering Sunday stopped with the advent of the industrial revolution when work and life patterns changed and the religious connection has long died out. However, the day is still celebrated in March to coincide with Lent, unlike the majority of other countries which celebrate it in May. As one of spring’s biggest gifting events, last year Mother’s Day was estimated to be worth over £400million to the gifts and greetings cards industry in the UK. But how does the rest of the world celebrate mothers on this special day? Happy Mother's Day. Feliz DÍa de las Madres. Furaha ya Mama Siku. It doesn't matter how you say it, the sentiment is the same.
The USA – Sunday 10 May Much the same as the UK, Mother’s Day in the United States is a highly commercial holiday and traditions generally include treats like breakfast in bed, flowers, cards or going out for a meal. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and became a national holiday in 1914.

Sunday 10 May
Sunday 10 May
Muttertag takes place on the second Sunday of May – unless it falls on Pentecost, in which case it moves to the first Sunday of the month. During World War II, the holiday took on political significance as the day to acknowledge women for producing children. Medals were awarded in gold, silver or bronze based upon how many children were in a household.
In Australia it is tradition to wear a carnation (right) on Mother’s Day – a coloured carnation signifies that a person’s mother is alive while a white carnation is used to honour a deceased mum. The holiday stretches beyond immediate family though, with Australian children giving gifts to their aunts, grandmothers and other women who care for them.
France – Sunday 31 May
Spain –
In France, Fête des Mères is reserved for the last Sunday in May – although it occurs in early June if Pentecost is the same day. It didn't become an official day of celebration until 1950, but was originally declared a holiday by Napoleon. A family meal is the norm and traditionally the mother is presented with a floral cake.

India – Sunday 10 May The concept of celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May is relatively new in India. The holiday has grown in popularity in the last ten years and is now commercialised to a big extent in cities such as Delhi. Hindus in India also celebrate the goddess Durga, or Divine Mother, during a ten-day festival called Durga Puja in October.
Things are done a little differently in Spain, where DÍa de las Madres is always celebrated on the first Sunday in May. On this day, Spaniards pay tribute not only to their own mothers but also to the Virgin Mary (pictured) and the day includes religious celebrations across the country.
Thailand – Wednesday 12 August Mother's Day in Thailand is celebrated on the birthday of Queen Sirikit of Thailand (left), as she is regarded as mother to all Thai people. The holiday was first celebrated in 1976 and is observed as a national holiday. Father's Day is celebrated on the King's birthday – 5 December.
Peru – Sunday 10 May A commercialised Mother’s Day is celebrated in Peru on the second Sunday in May. But much of Peru's indigenous Andean population also celebrates the gifts of Mother Earth, or Pachamama, in early August. Pachamama is an ancient mythological goddess who is revered as the bringer of fertility. Her special worship day is called Martes de Challa. A mariachi band plays Las Mañanitas
Mexico –
Sunday 10 May
Mother’s Day in Mexico is celebrated on the fixed date of 10 May, unlike most countries where the date changes every year. According to custom, sons and daughters spend time at home with their mothers the evening before Mother’s Day. The day is then celebrated with great enthusiasm as churches organise a special mass, an orchestra plays Las Mañanitas and the traditional morning meal of tamales and atole is distributed to all local mothers. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Bird trainer to help save endangered macaws Heather Scott, head bird trainer at Sheffield’s Tropical Butterfly House, will soon be setting off to Costa Rica to help save one of the world’s most endangered parrots by working with the Ara Project. The charity is dedicated to ensuring the future of great green macaws and scarlet macaws in Costa Rica. Both of these species’ numbers have been devastatingly reduced as a result of capture for the pet trade, hunting and deforestation. Heather (pictured) will be working voluntarily for the Ara Project for six weeks at their breeding centre in Punta Islita. Heather and her team have raised £1,500 in donations for them by selling wristbands during the animal and bird shows. BALTIC BEAUTY Fiona Barber discovers the secrets of a city that has been at the centre of some of the 20th century’s most momentous events.
S
earching for somewhere different for your next mini-break? How about the city where the first shots of World War Two were fired and where, 40 years later, freedom-loving trade unionists set about bringing down the Iron Curtain? OK, so it doesn’t sound like the romantic getaway of your dreams, but the Polish city of Gdansk is packed with potential for weekenders – and with regular, low cost flights from Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield travelling there could not be easier. And if you’re a fan of grand architecture and lively nightlife you will be in for a very pleasant surprise… The lights of Gdansk city centre were dwarfed by the grandeur of the magnificent train station in view from my hotel room. Arriving just after midnight on a cool Friday, the city was host to a steady hum of partygoers, something that became a faraway thought as I sunk my weary head down onto the crisp white pillow. Well rested and well fed after a good night’s sleep and a hearty buffet breakfast in the centrally located Hotel Scandic, it was time to explore what the 1,000-year-old Polish city has to offer. To immerse yourself in Gdansk, some background knowledge of a rich and tragic history helps. For centuries it was fought over by Poles, Germans, Swedes and Russians. Much of Gdansk was destroyed in WWII, but

The magnificent clock at St Mary’s Church
was superbly rebuilt in the aftermath as one of Europe’s most beautiful port cities. There are many striking buildings, like the gothic St Mary’s Church. Currently the largest brick church in the world, it features an entrancing astronomical clock, which shows the time and date, phases of the moon, the position of the moon and sun in relation to the zodiac signs and the calendar of saints. Legend has it the clock’s creator had his eyes gouged out so he would never make a clock better than this one. Now that’s commitment. After soaking up the holy artefacts within the church, those with a head for heights can climb the 78-metre tower, gaze down on the city and be rewarded with charming views of the old town. From the decorative grandeur of the church, it was refreshing to browse the city’s terraced dolllike houses and its fountains and statues. I got a taste of romance on the ‘bridge of love’ with its heavily decorated padlock railings, before heading off to refuel with some traditional Polish cuisine at Gdanski Bowke Restaurant. I ate zurek on each day of my visit to Gdansk. And given the chance, I would probably have eaten it every day since. This delicious traditional Polish soup comes in a variety of flavours – and is occasionally topped with a hard-boiled egg – but it is always a unique combination of sour, salty and creamy. This hearty dish is even served in a bread bowl, so after you’ve eaten the soup you can enjoy the soup-soaked bread. Utter genius. We were also offered a popular local appetiser. Certainly not for the devout vegetarian or those www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Gdansk highlights A must see… The Solidarity museum – this multimedia exhibit traces the history of the Solidarity movement and Poland's struggle to escape the grip of communism. Further afield Malbork castle – the world’s biggest brick castle, medieval architecture and the opportunity to eat. Sopot and Gdina – trendy nightlife, sandy beaches and some good little cafés and restaurants make this neighbouring town and city popular places to visit.
with high cholesterol, smalec is predominantly flavoured pork fat. We slathered a generous layer on a slice of homemade bread, popped a gherkin on the top, and voilà. Besides its cuisine and history, Gdansk is best known for its production of Baltic amber – fossilized tree resin – which made a visit to the Amber Museum a must. Housed in Gdansk’s medieval Foregate building – once home to the prison tower and torture chamber – the multi-storey exhibit delves extensively into the history of Baltic amber and hosts an impressive collection of ‘inclusions’ (the result of bugs or plants being caught inside the amber, Exhibits in the Amber something that adds value to the Museum gemstone). I was fascinated by the diversity of amber and spent some time exploring the displays and creations, which vary from a mini drum kit, to ink wells, a chess board and much more besides. Hypnotised by the beauty of the gemstone, we travelled to the cobbles of St Mary’s Street, known as the street of art and amber. It’s also known as the place where time has stood still for 300 years, because of its rows of traditional terraced houses, which are home to classic ornate gargoyle rain gutters, delicately detailed railings and front stoops. This street gave me a true sense of Gdansk Old Town. Despite the significant sense of history here, Gdansk is also flourishing as a cosmopolitan, innovative city. In recent years there have been dramatic developments to expand entertainment and culture in Gdansk. The PGE Arena, which was originally built for Euro 2012 is now a multifaceted music, sport, food and entertainment venue. On our tour of this huge building we visited the Fun Arena, which is host to various games and activities – and something we had all been particularly giddy about: The Escape Rooms. In this Crystal Maze type venture, we were locked in a room and had to find and solve cryptic clues before moving on to the next room and eventually escaping. Despite our valiant efforts and
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
teamwork, we failed. Nevertheless, it was certainly an entertaining way to while away a couple of hours. Back into the town centre we were in for a more sophisticated kind of culture, with the newly built £15million Shakespeare Theatre. Despite the name, this is an example of supreme modernism, with 56 lifts that enable the area in front of the stage to be transformed into an Elizabethan-style thrust stage and a 90tonne retractable roof – the only one of its kind in the world – that opens in three minutes to allow for daylight performances in good weather. Although the modern ventures of Gdansk are worlds away from what the old town and history of the city has to offer, in many ways having all these elements makes the city that much more intriguing and provides visitors and locals the best of both worlds. With such rich history it would have been easy for the city to become stuck in the past and out of touch with the world, but instead Gdansk has managed to develop and move with the times while keeping a firm grasp on its past. And because of this, its unusually flavoursome cuisine and quaint beauty, it’s the perfect place to spend a city break.

PROMOTIONAUTOHAUS DOLBY
A free check-up at Autohaus Dolby can help to keep your car moving through the worst the winter can throw at you.
I
t may be February but the winter weather shows no signs of letting up, as snow, ice and frosty temperatures are once again forecast for the region. Snow, ice and spray on the roads mean that, in addition to poor visibility, stopping distances increase and drivers should be prepared for the unexpected on the road. Drivers should allow extra time for journeys, including time to properly de-ice their vehicle before setting off, keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and be patient with other road users. It is also a good idea to keep an emergency kit in the car, including warm and waterproof clothing, a flashlight and a first aid kit. During these times, it is important to make sure your vehicle is fully serviced and tyres have good tread depth before setting off in the cold. Ensure that fluids especially windscreen wash (to the correct concentration to prevent it freezing), anti-freeze and oil are topped up and clear snow and ice off windows, mirrors, lights and the roof, even for short journeys. Cold weather can cause problems for vehicles as car batteries may have trouble starting or antifreeze can freeze in the cooling system. Drivers use their lights, windscreen wipers and heaters more in winter so there can be electrical problems. Autohaus Dolby offers an invaluable winter check that casts an eye over all these areas and gives drivers peace of mind. The check covers antifreeze and screen wash levels, windscreen wipers, battery and tyres. And the best part is – this service is completely free. Established ten years ago by Matt Dolby, this independent business offers a comprehensive service for Volkswagen owners tailored to their specific vehicle. The staff at Autohaus Dolby have specialist knowledge of the brand and pride themselves

on their friendly and approachable service. “The winter check is really helpful for customers and it’s a statement of what Autohaus Dolby is all about,” said Matt. “It’s a good way of introducing ourselves to new customers and it’s great for business as people always come back to us for a service.” Autohaus Dolby uses Volkswagen’s own service schedule and genuine parts and equipment to deal with any VW model. Working alongside Aran Haigh and Nick Wilson, whose knowledge of such vehicles is second to none, Matt provides a service to exceed all expectations. “We’re a small, friendly business and we make every effort to be easy to deal with. We offer a more personal service than big garages and we are considerably cheaper,” said Matt. “I think it is important for customers to fully understand what they are spending their money on, so we make sure you can always speak to the person who is working on your car.” A minor service starts from £99 and a major service from £149 including VAT, parts and labour, with a service valet as standard. There is also the option of a free, new Volkswagen courtesy car so that your day can continue as normal. Prepare your vehicle for all conditions and every eventuality with Autohaus Dolby and drive away safe in the knowledge that your car is ready for anything.
