A

s we pack away the tinsel and savour the last mince pie, it is with a sigh of disappointment that the Christmas festivities draw to a close for another year. But whilst the holidays may have passed, winter is well and truly here to stay. The cold weather can leave our homes and gardens looking a sorry state and, with frosty temperatures killing off our plants and flowers, the last thing we want to do is venture outside in January. So why not bring the outdoors indoors this winter and enjoy all the joys of nature in the warmth and comfort of your own home? No weeding or digging required!

IMAGEVALENTINE’S

To Have and Have Not (1944) Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall "We'll have a lot of fun together." So Humphrey Bogart told his 19-year-old co-star before shooting this masterful war drama. The star had never dated a leading lady and the young actress had never been in a film before, but their relationship became one of Hollywood's most famous love affairs. Despite a 25-year age gap and Bogart already being married, the couple wed in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957.

Words: Hannah Pearson

REEL LOVE Who said romance was dead? Here are seven of the best Hollywood relationships ever forged on-screen.

I

t has been said that ‘life imitates art’ and never is this more true than on the silver screen. Hollywood doesn't get any more romantic or voyeuristic than those movies that sparked passionate, off-camera love affairs. From epic war films to comic book heroes, this crop of films saw sparks flying more furiously off-screen than on. And while most celebrity rendezvous last about as long as the film première after-party, these Hollywood couples have proven to have staying power both personally and professionally in the fickle world of showbusiness. So whether you’re cosying up on the sofa or cracking open a bottle of vino for one this Valentine’s Day, be inspired by these reel love stories.

Swing Shift (1984) Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1968, but only began a relationship after they costarred in Swing Shift. The couple have been together since 1983 – although they haven’t tied the knot – and have raised four children together.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996) Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith met in 1994 on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air when Jada auditioned to play Will's girlfriend on the show. She may have missed out on the part but the couple married in 1997 and have two children together, Jaden and Willow, who are fast becoming famous in their own right.

Daredevil (2003) Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Bennifer 2.0 met on the set of Pearl Harbor in 2001 but didn't start dating until 2004, after playing comic book hero and heroine Daredevil and Elektra. During filming, Affleck rescued his co-star from a stunt gone wrong and Garner found her very own superhero. They married a year later and now have three children.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie One of the more controversial on-set meetings, Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston when he met Angelina on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The fictional couple who are hired to kill one another morphed into the ultimate real-life super couple, Brangelina. They married last year and are raising six children together.

Dream House (2011) Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz Possibly one of the most secret celebrity love stories, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were friends for years but started dating in 2010 when they co-starred in Dream House. The psychological thriller may have received poor reviews and low box office results but the couple went on to marry, with just four guests attending the private ceremony and the rest of the world oblivious to their romance.

The Place Beyond The Pines (2012) Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes Hollywood’s golden couple started dating in 2011 when they co-starred in American crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines. Frequently voted as one of the most beautiful and successful A-list couples, Ryan and Eva welcomed a baby girl last year. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

IMAGEWELLBEING Words: Stephanie Burns

SHAPE UP AND

LOSE IT!

While the old adage ‘eat less, do more’ is one of the best ways to keep fit and trim, have you ever wondered how best to drop the pounds and stay active at your specific age? We’ve compiled the best tips and tricks to keep you and your family fit and healthy throughout your lifetime.

KIDS Food Annabel Karmel is the doyenne of children’s cooking. Over the last 20 years, she has sold more than 4million copies of her 37 cookbooks, which focus on every stage of a child’s development. If you have fussy little eaters who hate the idea of fresh vegetables, Annabel’s hidden vegetable sauce is the perfect way to disguise veggies while giving your children a tasty, nutritious meal. This sauce is perfect with pasta, as a pizza topping or simply served alongside meat. This recipe – and many more – is available at www.annabelkarmel.com.

Hidden vegetable sauce Ingredients 2 tbsp light olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped 100g carrots, peeled and grated 50g courgette, grated 50g button mushrooms, sliced 1 tsp balsamic vinegar 400g passata 1 tsp soft brown sugar 1 vegetable stock cube dissolved in 400ml boiling water A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method 1 Heat the oil in a pan, add the crushed garlic and sauté for a few seconds, then add the onion and sauté for a further 2 minutes. 2 Add the carrots, courgette and mushrooms and sauté for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3 Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for 1 minute. 4 Stir in the passata and sugar, cover and simmer for 8 minutes. 5 Add the vegetable stock and cook for 2 minutes, stirring continuously. 6 Add the basil and season to taste. 7 Transfer to a blender and blitz until smooth.

Fitness If your child is not naturally active and struggles to find the energy to run around as much as their friends or siblings, don’t despair. The key is making energetic activities fun – if they’re having a good time, they won’t feel like they’re being forced into exercise that they’re not comfortable with. Activity Sheffield (www.sheffield.gov.uk) offers a huge range of activities for kids – Zumbatonic, dodgeball, rounders, street dance and gymnastics are just a few – so whatever they’re into they can find something to get involved in. If a little extra help is needed, Zest on Upperthorpe Road has a fantastic Children’s Weight Management Service for seven- to 15-year-olds. This 12week programme comprises a weekly one hour group session on healthy eating followed by an hour of activity. Visit www.zestcommunity.co.uk for information. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

TEENS Food There’s no way you can keep track of everything your teenager consumes while they’re at school, at college or out with friends. But you can lead by example and maintain a healthy home life with filling breakfasts and homemade evening meals. Teaching them to cook their own meals will also be hugely beneficial if they’re going to live away for university or moving in with friends and will ensure unhealthy salt-laden ready meals are a last resort rather than a daily occurrence.

Fitness Team sports are a great way for teenagers to keep fit, have fun and socialise outside of their usual friendship groups. But, if your son or daughter is self conscious or worried that sport will interfere with their school work and social life, there are loads of at-home options that can keep your teen fit without taking up too much time. With thousands of celebrity fitness DVDs – there’s even a Made in Chelsea version – they can fit in some activity without having to leave the house or sacrifice other commitments.

ADULTS Food

ELDERLY Food To maintain a healthy lifestyle as you get older, it’s important to choose a vitaminrich diet. The body’s ability to absorb key nutrients decreases with age so ensure that – where possible – you are consuming the correct balance. Essential vitamins such as B12, folic acid, calcium, vitamin D, potassium, magnesium, fibre and omega-3 fats. Many of these are found in fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, milk, fish and meat so aim to eat as many unprocessed foods as possible. If you struggle to incorporate all the necessary nutrients into the foods you eat, consider taking a supplement or multi-vitamin to boost your daily intake.

There are thousands of diets available for those looking to lose weight and shape up. Atkins, 5:2 and Dukan have had their fair share of the headlines in recent years and do work for many. But, if lowering your calorie intake to just 500 two days a week or cutting out whole food groups fills you with dread, there is a simpler alternative. Assess your current eating plan and change any fat or carb-heavy meals and snacks to healthier options. Then assign one day a week to your ‘treat’ day, when you can eat whatever you like. By eating well most of the time and knowing that for one day a week you can pig out, you’ll be more motivated to stick to your plan and will enjoy those treats even more when you do have them.

Fitness Fitness Swimming is a great pastime for any age but it’s particularly beneficial to older people whose joints and bones aren’t up to running or a strenuous gym session. Water is around 800 times denser than air so even a gentle swim can burn more than 200 calories in just half an hour. The rhythmic action is calming and it can also improve psychological well being, balance blood pressure and normalise pulse rate. Sheffield is fortunate to boast a variety of swimming pools across the city, including SIV’s Heeley Pool, Springs Leisure Centre, Ponds Forge and Westfield Sports Centre, which offer a range of sessions for fun, fitness, socialising and relaxation. To find your nearest pool, call 0330 333 0555 or visit www.swimsheffield.co.uk. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

For many adults, the biggest obstacle to improving their fitness is time. With work, family life and socialising, exercise is often last on the to-do list. But there is a solution. More than two million people worldwide have downloaded the 7 Minute Workout App, which contains 12 high-intensity, 30second bodyweight exercises with a ten second rest between each one. You can perform the workout at home and need no specialist equipment, making it the ideal way to get fit in no time.

IMAGENEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Time to shape up Want to start the new year by losing weight? Our experts are here to help. SLIMMING WORLD According to NHS Choices, around seven million of us will make a New Year’s resolution to improve our health after overindulging at Christmas – and losing weight is top of our list, above giving up smoking, getting fit and drinking less alcohol. Luckily for anyone looking to lose weight in 2015, Slimming World has streamlined its Extra Easy plan and local Slimming World Consultant Angela says this means local slimmers will be able to achieve their New Year resolution with ease. Angela, who runs the Beighton Slimming World groups, is excited about the changes. She says: “Like many of our members, our Extra Easy eating plan has had a makeover for 2015 and is looking better than ever. It’s now simpler to follow and members will find it even easier to get off to a great start with their weight loss. There’s also a fab new way to boost your slimming power along your journey if you need it.” For decades, Slimming World’s Food Optimising programme has shown members

that it’s possible to lose weight without being on a restrictive and faddy diet and to satisfy their appetite with healthy foods without counting, weighing or measuring everything you eat. Instead, slimmers are encouraged fill up on everyday foods – which Slimming World calls ‘Free Foods’ – like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, which are filling yet naturally low in calories. This year, Slimming World has used the latest research to identify the foods that are the lowest in energy density, so they'll really help to speed up weight loss (mostly vegetables and fruit) and those which are the most satisfying and filling (mostly protein and fibre-rich foods). By basing meals around these foods, members can super-charge their slimming campaign. Alison Gibson Slimming World Team Developer 0114 2486857 07961 925293 slimwithali@aol.com

PLACES GYM Places Gym instructor, Sam Owen, and member, Matt Brown, discuss the benefits of personal training. Matt Brown “Seven years ago, I was 12 stone and a 38” waist. I am now 10 stone with a 30” waist thanks to my new passion – the gym. Although I had lost weight, I still needed to improve my fitness levels and tone up. I met Sam when I had my induction to the club and it was there that I decided to take out personal training as I had never been to a gym before and Matt before his weight loss had very little knowledge of what to do. “I have had three personal training sessions per week since joining in March and can certainly say that I am fitter, stronger, toned and have more self confidence. I can honestly say that I would not have achieved these things if it was not for Sam helping me.” Sam Owen “Matt, you are an inspiration. You are dedicated, you work hard and you never fail to make a session. I have given you the tools but you are the one that puts in the hard work. Well done! It is an absolute pleasure working with you.”

E

aten too many mince pies this Christmas? Spent too much time on the sofa watching festive TV? Well there’s no better time than January to beat the bloat and make fitness your number one resolution for 2015! So why not shape up and shed that extra winter weight with Sheffield’s most popular health and fitness membership scheme – Fitness Unlimited? Don’t just take our word for it! Fitness Unlimited won no less than four awards at the recent Health Club Awards, which were voted for by our 18,000 members. Membership gets you unlimited access to gym, lane and leisure swimming and spa facilities, plus 300 fitness classes at six venues across Sheffield. You could try aqua aerobics at Heeley Swimming Pool, a spin class at the

English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) or body combat at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. There’s also Pilates at Springs Leisure Centre, HIIT (high intensive interval training) at Concord Sports Centre and swim fit at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, to name a few. So wherever you work or live, or whatever you enjoy doing, there’s a Fitness Unlimited venue for you. By becoming a member, you can also join in the celebrations for Fitness Unlimited’s 15th birthday! Now one of Sheffield’s biggest sporting success stories, Fitness Unlimited started out back in January 2000 with just three venues, a handful of fitness classes, a health suite and an athletics track. It has gone from strength to strength over the last 15 years, continuing to provide the biggest and best value membership in Sheffield. Having sold approximately 150,000 memberships since its infancy, it is safe to say that Fitness Unlimited has played a major part in making the people of Sheffield healthier and more active.

The scheme is operated by Sheffield City Trust, whose primary role is to benefit the health and wellbeing of the people of Sheffield. Its charitable status means that any surplus income generated is ploughed back into facilities across the city. This has resulted in significant investment across Fitness Unlimited venues over the last 15 years. More recent projects include a significant renovation at EIS Sheffield in 2013, the addition of a new gym at Heeley earlier this year, and a more recent revamp at Concord, which boasts the latest Unity Technology. So, whether you just want to tone up or completely change your fitness regime, Fitness Unlimited’s multi-site membership has you covered. Fitness Unlimited members also benefit from a rewards package, which grants up to 20 per cent discount on selected leisure activities, such as ice skating. You can visit the venues as often as you want and take part in as many classes as you like. With so much on offer, the hardest task will be deciding what activity to take up first. PROMOTIONPLACES GYM

After a major revamp and relaunch, Places Gym Health Club has everything you need for a whole new you.

P

laces Gym Health Club, on Crystal Peaks Retail Park, has been undergoing some exciting changes of late and was relaunched as Places Gym in June 2014. Originally called Sam Jones, the club opened in 2000 and has offered low cost, high quality fitness options to the people of Sheffield for the past 15 years. As well as being rebranded, the gym has also undergone a refurbishment, invested in updated gym equipment and introduced two simplified membership options. The club is run by Places for People Leisure – it is the first Places Gym and the first of many in the UK. The upgrade began at the end of 2013 when the gym invested in £300,000 worth of new, state-of-the-art equipment. The upgraded club is truly impressive, with a separate indoor cycling room and large dedicated free weight, resistance and cardiovascular workout areas. There is also a flexible functional space upstairs, a V Plate area and two large dance studios. Places Gym has over 40 group exercise classes on offer every week. They include all the regulars you would expect like Piloxing and aerobics, as well as some exciting new additions like boxercise and FitSteps®, a dance fitness class created by the professionals at BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. New members will complete an induction with a personal trainer before using the equipment and these are booked online as part of the sign up process when joining through the website. And, no matter what time you visit, there are always

staff on-hand to help unlike some other low cost gyms. Continuing their history of offering great value for money, there are new membership packages* in place for both new and existing members of Places Gym. The cheaper option is the gym only membership that allows unlimited access to the gym for £19.99 per month. Or for £34 a month, you can enjoy a full membership, which offers unlimited access to the gym plus all the group exercise classes. Moving with the times, the recent building works have seen the gym’s reception removed and replaced with state-of-the-art fingerprint recognition entry pods. It’s now more secure and easier than ever to work out whenever you like. Members must first register their fingerprint at the gym during their induction and then they are free to come and go as they please within opening hours. Despite the changes, regular members will be pleased to hear that the Headlines Elite hair salon, Revive beauty studio, and Characters coffee shop have all remained at the new Places Gym and are all open to non-members. Visit the new Places Gym website for more information and frequently asked questions, as induction bookings and membership sales are all done online now. Places Gym will be open Monday to Friday 6.30am-10pm and Saturday to Sunday 8am-6pm. PROMOTIONTHE SITWELL ARMS

Soothe your mind and relax your body with a yoga class or beauty treatment at The Sitwell Arms, writes Fiona Barber.

M

any of life’s demands can cause a build up of stress – particularly work, relationships and money problems. And when we feel stressed, it can affect how we feel, think and behave. To ensure we remain physically and mentally well, combating this tension is essential. It’s no secret that exercise has a positive effect on our brain and body, and in recent years the leisure industry has come up with all kinds of crazes to help us get fit, relax and unwind. But sometimes the oldest methods are the most effective. Yoga, an ancient form of exercise known for boosting physical and mental wellbeing has become the activity of choice for many. Despite being a yoga novice, when the opportunity arose to try out a class in the picturesque surroundings of The Sitwell Arms Hotel, I had to give it a go. dy I arrived at the class wearing my The Mind and Bo its facility is celebratingon Lycra leggings (which it turns out, tenth anniversary and are not a requirement) and ry ua br Fe 28 Saturday instructor Zoe Whiteley explained During Sunday 1 March. tastic we would be doing a flowing this weekend fan ers sequence – a form of yoga in which discounts and off will be available. postures are linked together using breathing techniques. We began by relaxing and focusing on our breathing. I relaxed quickly and retained this sense of calm as we made our way through the various poses of happy baby, the plank position, the bridge, down dog and mountain. Although I was the only beginner in the class, Zoe catered for all abilities by offering simple, standard and advanced options. While the physical movements in yoga play a huge part, Zoe says it’s also very spiritual. “Yoga saved me and that’s why I’m so passionate about it, I’ve even written a book on my spiritual journey. It’s a very personal experience; each person who comes to my class can take what they want from it.” There’s a great variety of classes to choose from at The Sitwell Arms Hotel, and if you do want to try something a little

unconventional, then new this year is piloxing – a dynamic combination of boxing and Pilates – taught by managing director Jo-Anne Oldfield. Once my yoga experience was complete I was whisked upstairs to discover another kind of tranquillity courtesy of the Mind and Body facilities. Here, I was treated to a Dermalogica skin-specific facial by beautician Rebekah Clayton. Before the treatment began I was asked to fill out a questionnaire about my skin type, which was used to tailor the products for me. Rebekah then cleansed my face and neck and applied dermal clay cleanser, a deep-cleansing clay that purifies and refines, before working microfoliant into a froth and leaving it to get to work for a couple of minutes. Then followed the pressure-point massage, which helps to relax and relieve tension-related headaches, and a sebumclearing masque – a cooling masque that made my skin feel minty-fresh. The hour-long treatment concluded with an oil-controlling moisturiser and some night bright eye cream, to combat dark circles. Leaving the candle-lit room I couldn’t help but be amazed by my new silky smooth face. I’ve had facials before but they usually leave my skin feeling oily – the skin specific treatment really is revolutionary and rounded off my Sitwell experience beautifully. Visit www.sitwellarms.com for class timetables, a beauty price list and discount vouchers.

Cubana gets the Guevara stamp of approval The next best thing to Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara has given her blessing to Sheffield’s renowned Cuban bar and tapas restaurant, Cubana. Che’s eldest daughter, Dr Aleida Guevara, dined as a special guest of the Leopold Square venue as part of her visit to the city in December. Cubana’s Adrian Bagnoli said: “Having a visit from Che Guevara’s daughter really is the ultimate accolade for us. The fact that her advisors chose us as the place for her to eat is a real honour. It was a pleasure to welcome her and I hope Cubana’s Havana-inspired decor reminded her of home.”

Handsworth Traditional Sword Dancers performed their annual Boxing Day events in Woodhouse Market Square and St Mary’s, Handsworth. The event began with a play in which the Derby Tup is slain, followed by carol singing. A team of eight dancers in Dragoon type uniforms carrying metre-long swords then performed an intricate routine ending with the swords intertwined in the ‘lock’, which was carried by Dave Pitt.

IMAGEASK THE EXPERT

Ask the expert Annette Kerrigan, branch manager at Haybrook Crystal Peaks, offers her expert advice. How do I maximise my chances of selling?

There are a number of steps you can take as a seller to ensure potential buyers see your property in the best possible light. Kerb appeal Make sure the front of your home looks the best it can. Tidy the front garden and mow the lawn, put some pot plants near the front door and ensure the windows and doors are clean. This ensures that anyone driving past the house gets the best impression.

F Quality Re-upholstery by our Master Upholsterers F Tailor-Made Sofas, Chairs, Footstools and Headboards F Experts in Upholstering Antique Furniture F Made-to-Measure Curtains and Blinds F The Largest Library of Fabrics and Wallpapers in the Area F New cushion interiors and spring repairs

De-personalise If you have very strong décor tastes that may not appeal to everyone, redecorate with a neutral colour scheme. The relatively small cost of painting the walls and fitting a reasonably-priced carpet will more than pay for itself with a quicker sale if buyers can imagine putting their own stamp on the place. Create the illusion of more space and light Put up mirrors in every room to reflect light and make the room appear bigger. If showing buyers around the property yourself, always invite them to walk into a room first as it will look more spacious with fewer people in there. Make it homely No-one is going to fall in love with a property that is cold and dark. Before viewers arrive, put the heating and all of the lights on so they are welcomed into a pleasant atmosphere. And, even if you’re not living there, furnish every room with basic items so buyers can imagine how the space would function as their home.

oakbrook

Tidy up It may sound obvious but making sure the entire house (even the cellar and garage) are clean and tidy can make a huge difference to a viewer’s crucial first impression.

IMAGETRAVEL

Chris Wilson gets off the beaten track and discovers that Washingborough Hall makes an ideal base for exploring historic Lincoln.

CITY BREAK IN THE COUNTRY W

ith its magnificent cathedral, cobbled streets, riverside walks and superior independent shopping opportunities, Lincoln ticks all the boxes as a city break destination. And while not exactly a hidden gem, the fact that it does not attract the huge tourist numbers associated with certain other northern cities that have similar attributes makes it all the more appealing – and easier to get to grips with. No need for park and ride schemes here... driving cross-country on Lincolnshire’s sparsely populated roads until you catch the first glimpse of the cathedral spire is one of the most rewarding ways to begin a weekend break. And when it comes to finding a bed for the night, we found a gorgeous little hideaway just three miles away from, and several classes above, those oh-so-samey city centre chain hotels. Washingborough Hall is a pretty, Georgian Grade II-listed boutique hotel in a peaceful village setting. With three acres of mature gardens and grounds, complete with dovecote, it has elegant good looks that can’t help but make a winning first impression. But while the setting may be grand, the greeting is down-to-earth. Lucy and Edward Herring’s familyowned and managed 12-bedroom hotel rolls out the welcome mat for all occasions and all guests – including well-behaved dogs. Understandably, given the pretty setting next door to the local parish church, Washingborough Hall is very much in demand for a civil ceremony or a wedding reception. During out short stay their private dining rooms also catered seamlessly for the local cricket club’s end-of-season dinner and a funeral tea – truly a venue for all seasons and all occasions. Food is first rate, as you’d expect considering the proximity of some prime farm land to ‘The Washy’. Lucy’s classical Cordon Bleu training and the skills of dynamic young chef Dan Wallis are reflected in a menu that leans towards modern British, with the vast

IMAGEmagazine 50

majority of the meat, game and vegetables locally sourced. Dining in the two-AA rosette restaurant is a relaxed, classy affair and we enjoyed fabulous filet steak and duck in the evening, while the full English breakfast, cooked to order, is the perfect way to set you up for the day. The hotel is beautifully decorated throughout with period paints and original artwork depicting the local landscape. Our bedroom, complete with four-poster bed, was the last word in comfort and our bathroom included a free-standing bath. The city is only a few minutes’ drive away and Lincoln Cathedral, which has attracted pilgrims and visitors for over 900 years, is rather grand and awe-inspiring. Take the tour – the history is a tale worth hearing. Other city centre essentials include Lincoln’s famous Steep Hill (voted ‘Britain’s Best Street 2012’), the historic Bailgate area, and the waterfront. However if you want to extend the rural idyll, Washingborough village is the perfect starting point for riverside walks and cycle rides – and with such a gentle, flat landscape it’s gentle exercise all the way. www.washingboroughhall.com 01522 790340

WEEKEND GETAWAYS n Until the end of February visitors can enjoy a Paddington Bear-themed stay at Washingborough Hall including marmalade sandwiches and cocoa or a cream tea by the wood-burning stove on arrival. n A two-night stay includes a glass of Champagne aperitif on your first evening, a three-course dinner each evening, and a dip into Paddington’s floppy hat to enter a raffle, in which everyone wins a fun bear-themed prize. There is also a photography competition, the winner to be awarded a case of fine Champagne. Cost is £149.50 per person (£299 per room).
