he Oscars, the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes... they’ve all captured the headlines. But all those glittering ceremonies with their Alist stars and attention-grabbing celebs can’t hold a candle to 2019’s most memorable night out. With a little help from our friends – event sponsors The Owlerton Experience, drinks sponsors Robinsons Brewery and Young Chef of the Year sponsors My Fathers Heart, the Westside Restaurant Awards proved to be our biggest – and, of course, most glamorous – bash so far. Well, what more would you expect from the shining stars of Sheffield and North Derbyshire’s dining scene? This is an event that has grown in size and stature since we launched our first guide to the local restaurant scene back in 1991. The Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria, the

landmark Sheffield city centre hotel, hosted 220-plus guests and entered into the spirit of the occasion. Competition was keen of course, but we were delighted with how many local restaurants and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of eateries to be found in our region. There were 15 awards in total and on the following pages we’ll give you the lowdown on all the winners. But of course, the entire occasion was geared towards the unveiling of the big winners of our premium award – the Westside Restaurant of the Year for 2019. And this year’s top prize meant it was a repeat success for last year’s winner Brocco on the Park, the striking Scandistyle boutique hotel with a daring ‘small

plates’ menu that we found simply irresistible. This lovingly maintained venue on the edge of Endcliffe Park wowed the judges with its beautiful décor, relaxed setting, attentive friendly service and a fabulous menu packed with delicious gastronomic delights. Brocco on the Park were double winners on the night, scooping our Best Hotel Restaurant category as well as our main prize. The two other shortlisted venues in the Restaurant of the Year category were Omega at Abbeydale, which picked up the Best Newcomer and Bank House Hathersage, which won Best Contemporary. Judging by the massive round of applause that greeted the announcement – made by our compere and guest judge Howard Middleton, of Great British BakeOff and BBC Radio Sheffield fame, it was a popular and richly deserved award. Howard said: “We had some great meals out and each venue had a lot going for it but Brocco on the Park deserves to be Westside’s Best Restaurant for the second year in a row.” Helping Howard make the final decision for Restaurant of the Year were guest reader Jonathan Rowley, whose knowledge and enthusiasm for the Sheffield restaurant scene proved invaluable, and RMC Media’s managing editor Chris Wilson. Meanwhile Chris Parker from West 10 won the Westside Young Chef of the Year, sponsored by My Fathers Heart. Guests were greeted on arrival at the Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria with a

chilled glass of fizz supplied by Robinsons Brewery of Stockport, who also kindly donated a stunning selection of wines and beers for the tables, as we gathered to toast those establishments that have reached the heights in cooking and serving food and drinks for a very demanding public, and to find out who had won the top prizes. Robinsons were also the driving force behind the evening’s very special charity raffle, with the prize of a fully catered brewery tour for 12 people, which raised just over £700 in support of Help for Heroes. Each of our 15 winners received an engraved plaque from Westside, and a bottle of Montelvino prosecco, kindly donated by Robinsons Brewery. The awards were presented by Westside’s Sam Warsop, Sally-Anne Sharp and Mandy Ogle, with Jonathan Coulthard of My Fathers Heart presenting the Best Young Chef award and Craig Allsop of The Owlerton Experience presenting the Restaurant of the Year award. Ben Robinson, of Robinsons Brewery, presented the Readers’ Choice award to Ego at Dore More Inn. Once the awards had been dished out and the plates had been cleared, it was time to hit the dancefloor. And for some hardened party animals, the after-party continued into the small hours at Kettle Black, winners of our Best Bar award. Read on to find out who picked up the region’s most coveted honours at the Westside Restaurant and Bar of the Year Awards 2019.

Westside Restaurant of the Year 2019

Brocco on the Park Also: Best Hotel Restaurant n its little enclave just off Endcliffe Park, Brocco on the Park has been consistently excellent since opening almost five years ago. Last year, they were wondering if they could improve on their Best Hotel Restaurant win in 2017, which they did, and in some style. Brocco walked away with Restaurant of the Year, Best Hotel Restaurant AND Young Chef of the Year. It was a unique hat-trick. Well, they’ve done it again, winning Restaurant of the Year and Best Hotel Restaurant. Owner Tiina Carr said: “It’s an extraordinary achievement for Brocco Kitchen to be recognised two years in a row as Westside’s Restaurant of the Year and Best Hotel Restaurant. “Our continued success is down to the hard work, quality and service standards of our dedicated team. In the kitchen, we’re fortunate to be led by Leslie Buddington, who’s been head chef since we opened in 2014. Leslie’s flair for flavours and his creative leadership of our chefs really help give us an edge. “I am equally proud of our front of house team who deliver such a high standard of customer service that we’ve become well-known for locally. Our restaurant manager Nick brings his substantial industry experience to training our staff and the customer experience at Brocco. It’s my personal aim to ensure every visit to Brocco is five-star for each customer.”

hris Parker from West 10 triumphed after a nervewracking Masterchef-style cookoff in the luxurious showroom kitchens of My Fathers Heart against three of the region’s best to be named Young Chef of the Year. Chris has been head chef of this popular wine bar in Ranmoor for just a matter of months but has made a big impression since arriving from the Kenwood Hotel, adding his own twist to the main menu and developing a new line of bar snacks to complement the full restaurant menu. His winning dish was a near-faultless main course of lamb cannon served with rosemary fondant potatoes, broccoli, asparagus, carrots and redcurrant jus. But the judges – chef-trainers Amanda Gleadall and Lisa Pyott from Doncaster College, My Fathers Heart customer and keen amateur chef Sue Briffa and RMC Media managing editor Chris Wilson – agreed that all four contestants rose to the occasion and delivered excellent dishes. Emily Aizlewood from Silversmiths, who cooked a venison wellington, was declared runner-up by a whisker while Jack Butler of The Tickled Trout’s turbot dish and Callum Lewis of the The Devonshire Arms’ seafood ravioli were both very close behind. Cooking on the latest state-of-the-art kitchen equipment in the My Fathers Heart showroom, all four contestants showed that they have the talent and

Young Chef of the Year Sponsored by My Fathers Heart Chris Parker, West 10 drive to go all the way to the top in their chosen profession. Head judge Lisa Pyott said: “The competition was fantastic and proved that there are lots of very good youngsters coming through in our profession. All four finalists should be very proud of themselves and while Chris was a worthy winner they can all look forward to very successful careers as chefs.”

Winner Chris said: “It went better than I thought although I was a bit nervous at first. I kept things seasonal, I stuck to the brief and thankfully I impressed everyone. It’s given me the confidence now to move things on at West 10.”

Readers’ Choice Award Ego @ Dore More Inn When news broke that a national Mediterranean restaurant chain were taking over the Dore More Inn, it raised more than just a few eyebrows. Would that kind of concept work on the edge of the Derbyshire countryside? Any fears were quickly laid to rest as what they’ve done with the place is nothing short of spectacular and customers – and particularly Westside readers – have been quick to show their appreciation. Lucy Krajankova, general manager said: “We thought we might be in with a chance of newcomer but never expected this, it’s amazing.”

Best Bar Kettle Black Best Night Out Cubana With live music and tapas upstairs and salsa dancing – and the widest range of rums in Sheffield behind the bar – Cubana consistently delivers the whole package from the stunning surroundings of Leopold Square. Speaking after their second successive win in this category, Cubana’s Jonathan Furness said: “We’re extremely happy. We’re a family team, everyone looks out for each other, everyone enjoys themselves and hopefully the customers enjoy it as much as we do.”

Best Contemporary Bank House This delightful new addition to the Derbyshire dining scene draws inspiration from Spain and is housed in a neo-Jacobean old bank – in case you hadn’t worked that out already. Choose from a range of tapas. Their traditional Sunday lunch deserved special mention too. Sam Bell seemed very humbled by the award: “It’s very, very unexpected. I’m just the idiot who bought an empty bank! [The win] is down to an amazing team, everyone works very, very hard. We’ll have the plaque proudly on the wall.”

With its cocktail masterclasses, lively DJs and VIP area, Kettle Black ticks all the boxes for that extra special night out – and they’ve been doing it on a consistent basis. This was their third win in a row. Jack Hartley, general manager enthused: “Three years in a row, it’s a great honour, especially in a growing competitive market in Sheffield where there’s a lot of bars and restaurants popping up. “We try and keep ahead of the game with our drinks and service and it’s good that we’re still seen as a highend bar in that sense.”

Best Dining Pub Tickled Trout

There’s lots to love about the Tickled Trout in Barlow. The bar is an inviting place to start the evening, with a good selection of beers and ales as well as an extensive gin menu. And the restaurant, which has proved consistently good over the years (the day boat fish is fantastic), is worthy of every praise. “It’s great teamwork, a great team effort,” said Chris Mapp, chef proprietor. “The staff try their hardest to take it to the next level. The success is all down to the hard work my team does.”

Best Indian Prithi Raj In perhaps one of the most fiercely competitive categories, and on one of the most competitive roads when it comes to dining out, Ecclesall Road’s Prithi Raj has established itself for serving up consistently good curries and more over the years. “We’re absolutely made up,” said Bilal Miah and Jay Miah. “This is the best. It’s a passion for the customer service, we don’t just serve them food, we welcome them, welcome them back… the chef comes out of the kitchen and talks to everybody and that’s what we like.”

Best Oriental Chinatown Under the ownership of Martin Ng and stewardship of manager Yan Man, Chinatown, which opened in March, is unrecognisable from its previous incarnation. There’s a neat and well-stocked bar to greet you and plenty of staff to attend to your every whim. Three menus – daytime dim sum and evening ‘English’ and Chinese menus – leave no stone unturned. It’s been a promising start for the London Road venue. “We’re very surprised but very happy,” commented Yan.

28 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Best Italian Maranello’s The Ecclesall Road restaurant has exposed brick walls, vintage Italian artwork and candlelit marble tables that give it a rustic, cosy air – you feel right at home straight away. The food is familiar and tempting – and tasty too – and there’s a real family atmosphere. Owner Alfredo Geci said of the win: “I’m very surprised, I feel a bit bad now not bringing my whole team! I’ll give the award to them, it’s a great team, great effort.”

Best Afternoon Tea Godiva Having opened in Meadowhall in December 2018, Godiva has become the go-to place for luxury sweet treats – and of course afternoon tea. Store manager Gabriella Price beamed: “The chocolate afternoon tea is something a bit different and something that has proved really popular.” Indeed it is, featuring sandwiches, chocolate fondue and petits gateaux. “I’m so proud of the team,” added Gabriella as she toasted this sweet victory.

Best Café/Light Bite 1554 You do wonder if Canon Keith Farrow is channelling a bit of divine inspiration but given that this is 1554’s third win at the Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards – including taking Best Café/Light Bite last year – you can’t deny that the decision to put a café inside Sheffield Cathedral has proved to be a winner. “Five years ago I said we needed a coffee shop and we’ve got to hit it high-end,” said Canon Keith Farrow. “That’s three [Westside awards] now. Amazing.” Manager Ruth Maher added: “It’s bringing people into the cathedral for good coffee, good food and fantastic service.”

Best Family Favourite The Peacock, Cutthorpe Stunning views of the Derbyshire countryside, an excellent selection of beers, wines and spirits, and top-class modern-British cuisine, has attracted a loyal following both locally and further afield. After scooping ‘Best Dining Pub’ last year, The Peacock, Cutthorpe demonstrated their all-round appeal by coming out on top in the ‘Family Favourite’ category, something Charlotte Marsden and head chef Andy Clark credit to “teamwork and passion. We offer the whole package.” It’s clearly a recipe for success.

Best Newcomer Omega at Abbeydale The Omega at Abbeydale might be new but there are familiar faces behind it. The trio of Jamie Christian (manager), Stephen Roebuck (head chef) and Angela Jackson (head waitress) set up a new banqueting suite at Abbeydale Sports Club after the closure of the original Omega – former home to our Restaurant Awards – just off Psalter Lane. It’s a tried and tested formula that’s working well for Jamie and his team, who commented: “We’ve got a good team and we’re lucky that a lot of the old customers from the Omega have followed us across.”

EATING OUT

Warm welcome ENVELOP YOURSELF IN THE COMFORT OF MARANELLO’S, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. aving married into an Italian family I quickly learned that food – and indeed family – is pretty much central to everything. It’s probably why the visit to your local trattoria lingers long in the memory as always being a warm, welcoming experience, especially if you’ve got a bambino or two in tow. The Italian restaurants I remember growing up had this warmth in abundance and, coupled with great food, were always happy, exciting places to visit. Maranello’s, on Ecclesall Road, certainly echoes this and, under the stewardship of Alfredo Geci, ticks all the boxes for what a good Italian restaurant should be. I’d liken a visit to a big warm hug – it just makes you feel good inside. Exposed brick walls, vintage Italian artwork and candlelit marble tables all give it a rustic, cosy air – we feel right at home straight away. We’ve left the kids at home on this occasion so take advantage by ordering a bottle of Villa Serena merlot (£19.50) – it is Friday night after all. The menu is familiar and tempting and we start with a plate of antipasto (£8.50)

H

44 www.sheffieldvibe.com

from the specials board and fritta mista (£8.50). One thing I’ve learned over the years is that generous portions are the norm and our starters were no exception; the antipasto, consisting of coppa, prosciutto, salami, parmesan, olives and bread, would have been enough for both of us but was all very good. My platter of deep-fried half-shell mussels, calamari and tiger prawns was equally generous and equally good. The tartare sauce gave extra zing to the crisp seafood. While there’s a good selection of pizza and pasta at Maranello’s I had a real hankering for a steak and the filleto di Parma (£23.95) didn’t disappoint. The round of beef was perfectly cooked – medium-rare as requested – and given bags of extra flavour from a topping of Parma ham and a cream sauce made with Stilton cheese, black pepper, garlic and parsley. It was delicious. My wife was equally enthused with her salmone gamberi (£16.95), a generous fillet cooked with cherry tomatoes, garlic, parsley, white wine, tiger prawns and capers – all well-cooked and packed with flavour. An accompanying dish of vegetables – so often an after-

thought at many restaurants – were very good too. Another thing I’ve learned is that while portions might be a little more than you’re used to, you can take as much time as you need, which is perfect when making the decision to indulge in dessert or not. In the end, suitably rested, we did, opting for profiteroles (£5.25) and Alfredo’s homemade tiramisu (£5.25) – both sweet and satisfying. A good, strong espresso (£2.20) brought things to a close. Suitably sated, we headed out into the night with that lovely warm feeling inside. Alfredo, we’ll be back, and maybe next time we’ll bring the bambini. Nile Rodgers & Chic – ready to rock Tramlines

PREVIEW

Are you ready? TRAMLINES IS IN TOUCHING DISTANCE. HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW. ou’ve had the dates in your diary for months, learned the line-up by heart and done plenty of ‘research’ into improving your drinking stamina – now you’re more than ready for the festivities to begin. Tramlines 2019 is but weeks away and we can’t wait. To make sure you’re best prepared we’ve looked at everything you need to know to enjoy a memorable weekend, from the acts you don’t want to miss to the food that’s on offer, even what’s happening at the ‘Fringe’. Now it’s just a matter of counting down the days…

The comedy also kicks off on Saturday Phill Jupitus in the Leadmill tent and there should be decent crowds for Thomas Green, Daniel Muggleton, Alistair Barrie and Reginald D. Hunter. it. Let’s start with the comedy which sees Shappi Khorsandi and Phill Jupitus added to the line-up followed by Joe Carnall’s new project, Good Cop Bad Cop, and Drenge who’ll be live afterwards. You might want to head to the T’Other stage though, who has The Rifles, Peter Hook & The Light, Tom Grennan and Doves playing. And in a complete headspin you’ll not want to stray too far from the main stage who has Sleeper, Lewis Capaldi, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man and then headliners Nile Rodgers & Chic. Oh, and Happy Mondays have got to fit in somewhere too. If you’re the type of person who has the fear of missing out, all we can say is, good luck, how you can juggle that line-up is anyone’s guess. There probably won’t even be time for a beer. Throw in the Into The Trees family area, food from Cutlery Works, the fairground and plenty of ale offerings and you’ve got, potentially, a weekend to remember. Tramlines you’ve excelled yourselves. The David Clover Festival, Sheffield’s very own celebration of song, now in its 40th year, is one of the only two music festivals in the UK wholly devoted to singing. It comprises two separate events held over weekends early in the year: the Singers’ Platform (for aspiring professional singers at the start of their careers), and the Festival Weekend (for amateur singers of all ages) and attracts singers from throughout the UK and even abroad. Some of the best of those performances feature in the Festival Showcase at St Andrew’s. Soloists will perform opera (Mozart, Donizetti), oratorios (Handel), along with a fair dose of British song (Elgar, John Ireland) some German Lieder, and popular musicals (Rogers and Hammerstein). There will be small ensemble performances too, as well as folk songs and choruses from operas and musicals sung by the Sheffield Teachers’ Choir. Tickets £10 (£8) are available from Jackie 0114 286 3251 or at the door.

EXHIBITIONS Nordic by Nature: Modern design & prints Until 28 July / Weston Park Museum www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Artists and designers have long been inspired by the varied and dramatic landscapes of the Nordic countries. Nordic by Nature: modern design and prints, a new British Museum touring exhibition, explores how nature and landscape is at the heart of Finnish, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian art and design. Natural spectacles, from the bewitching aurora borealis to the white nights of the frozen north, as well as local materials like birch wood, have contributed to a distinctly Nordic aesthetic. Nordic by Nature: modern design and prints uses the British Museum’s collection to look at how Finnish, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian artists and designers have created distinctive objects and imagery that are rooted in the culture, traditions

and industries of those nations and often embody national pride. Forty-four remarkable British Museum objects and works on paper will illustrate how these artists and designers have been drawn to common themes. Exhibition highlights include seminal pieces by one of the leading figures in Finnish design, glassmaker Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985), which resemble melting, cracked or carved ice and are shown against prints of stark icy landscapes.

Last year it was reported that Aretha Franklin had died without making a Will – it now appears that she had made three, all DIY Wills; two found in a locked cupboard and the most recent, dated 2014, inside a notebook under cushions in her living room. Not only did no one know about them, there are problems about which one will have legal effect and how it will be interpreted. It seems amendments had been made to the most recent Will which were unclear with some of the handwriting illegible. It sounds like a recipe for disaster and there will probably be many years of litigation over her estate with two of Aretha’s sons objecting to the Wills. Aretha’s case is an extreme example of what can easily happen when someone decides to write their own will to save a little money. Inheritance disputes are on the rise largely due to an increase of homemade or internet wills. A well respected local colleague who deals with inheritance disputes once told me that her “best” clients are those who didn’t bother to get professional advice when making their Will.

Not only can a Will be challenged because of imprecise wording or whether someone had the capacity to make a Will in the first place but also, a Will typed up or written out by a beneficiary also looks dubious and it’s difficult to guage how many Wills made secretly never see the light of day if found by the wrong person who is not mentioned. It costs relatively little to get proper legal advice from a specialist solicitor; he or she can advise on protecting your beneficiaries and assets, how to save tax and ensure you end up with a clearly worded Will setting out your wishes. You will also have the benefit of being advised about the risks and consequences on the decisions you make which your close relatives may disagree with after you have died. Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors deal with Wills, probate and property issues and are available to discuss your future plans with you. Please call on 0114 2290160 or email mail@rwatchorn.co.uk. EYRES OF CHESTERFIELD CONTINUES TO EVOLVE WITH SOME EXCITING NEW ADDITIONS TO THE STORE. urnishing homes since 1875, Eyres has long been the place to go if you’re looking to add high quality pieces to your home décor. Their stunning collections of lighting, furniture and soft furnishings have had even the most strong-willed and tight-pursed of us through the doors without a second thought for years. Eyres has constantly evolved since it first opened its doors, and 2019 has already seen the business make big changes. Thomas Straw, the man behind local businesses Thomas & Edison, Bubble & Soak and more has recently taken over as owner of Eyres, and he has his sights set high for the future of the historic business. What used to be office space on the store’s second floor has been completely refurbished to house three brand new departments, which are nursery furniture, bathrooms and kitchens. And though there’s plenty of shiny new stuff to get excited about, they’ve ensured that they’ve maintained original features such as flooring and brickwork where possible. Thomas and his team have worked hard to ensure that customers old and new have access to high quality furniture, fixtures and fittings no matter their budgets. The brand new kitchen showroom features designs from Sheffield-based kitchen showroom Karl Benz. Their

collection of affordable, luxury, contemporary kitchens is sure to get you inspired. You’ll find products from Platinum Vision in the bathroom department too, so if you’re really looking to add a bit of luxury to your home, check out their impressive transparent and cinematic mirror TVs – or even get one installed in your shower, for those days you can afford to take a little longer to get ready. The bathrooms you’ll see on display at Eyres are exclusively designed by Bubble & Soak, with a whole range of luxury brands and styles on offer, and someone always on hand to help you make the right choice for your home. If you’ve got a little one on the way, you’ll probably already have noticed how difficult it can be to find all the bits and

pieces you need to put together a nursery. Luckily, Eyres’ new nursery department has it all – cribs, wardrobes, bassinettes, changing tables, wallpaper and soft furnishings too. All of the nursery furniture has been made to a high standard, with Eyres being the only stockist of Mamas & Papas furniture in Chesterfield and surrounding areas, so you can rest assured your new arrival will be safe and sound in his or her new home. Visit Eyres today to see just how much has changed over the past six months – but don’t worry, they’re still stocking all your old favourites too! LUXURY BATHROOMS AND WETROOMS

BEAUTIFUL BATHROOMS

…Concept to completion How do you get all the modern conveniences you expect in a 21st century bathroom without compromising your ecofriendly lifestyle or destroying the unique character of your Victorian home? This was that challenge that Ian and Maggie of Dore in Sheffield set Bubble & Soak, the Dronfield-based bathroom specialists...and they were delighted with the final results. The Bubble & Soak team designed a full Before bathroom renovation, from lowering the ceiling to creating bespoke wall panelling, and took great care to only select products that would suit the clients’ needs. They selected the stunning free-standing Tetbury unit from The Bathroom Company, a Villeroy & Boch WC, wood effect floor tiles, a beautiful freestanding bath from Burlington and an electric-only heated towel rail from Vogue UK. The end result is a new, modern bathroom that still blends in with the rest of Ian and Maggie’s home. Maggie and Ian said: “We could not recommend Bubble & Soak more highly. The whole process was superb - from the inspirational and faultless design, through to expert installation. “Nothing was too much trouble, and the incredibly professional team coped admirably with the quirks of our Victorian house maximising the usage of space and light.” Bubble & Soak offer a friendly, personalised service where they listen to the customers’ requirements and aspirations and turn them into reality by tailoring a bespoke design, quotation, supply and installation.

dave stone design The difference is in the detail.

Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management "Wow" has been the comment we have heard the most when people see our kitchen transformation - this is down to Dave Stone Design. After looking at previous work online and the recommendation of neighbours, we approached Dave Stone Design to design and quote for the work we wanted. Our brief had very little information, upgrade our old kitchen and knock through making an open plan living space. The design supplied by Dan blew us away and was never how we had imagined it, it ticked all our boxes and had the "wow" factor. From our initial meeting with Dan and Jane we knew we were working with a company we could trust. Dan controlled all the elements of the work with Liam the fitter always punctual, friendly, professional and helpful. All the trades who attended were again a pleasure to be around , nothing seemed too much trouble. They were polite, tidy and happy to offer advise and help. Our biggest job was choosing colours and the granite worktop which again, Jane offered her thoughts and we are very grateful and happy with the results. We are extremely happy as we now have the family space we always wanted with that added wow that Dave Stone Design promised - and delivered. Thank you! Lee & Anna-Marie

Customise your kitchen NOTHING IS OFF LIMITS AT SHEFFIELD, JUST BRILLIANT DESIGNS THAT REFLECT CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS AND BUDGETS. Who are we? Kutchenhaus is the UK’s fastest-growing German kitchen company, and a retail arm of Nobilia, the world’s largest kitchen manufacturer which produces over 3,000 kitchens a day. To this day it is still family owned with no shareholders. In Europe, German branded kitchens have been dominating the market for decades, outselling other contenders. But what makes a German kitchen so popular? German kitchens have a strong history within manufacture and engineering, dating back to the late 1800s. Over time, we have developed a solid reputation for continuing to build well-made and well-designed kitchens, and more importantly, kitchens that last. Our Factory The factory where we build our kitchens using state-of-the-art machinery, only uses high quality materials and components, all of which are rigorously tested. Everything is made to order, and components such as worktops are cut to size in the factory. We have our own fleet of delivery vehicles and all of our German efficiency and company structure means there is no middle-man adding costs along the way. Our product All our kitchens arrive fully assembled, with handles drilled and lighting seamlessly wired within the unit, eliminating the need for extra wire or motor casings on show. Worktops are cut to size and even hobs and sinks can be pre cut. Our automated units can open with the wave of a hand or lighting dimmed by the touch of a button. We can create anything you want with the end user in mind, whether tall, short or disabled. 98 www.sheffieldvibe.com

The team From designers to part-time staff, the whole team come from a design background which means our focus and drive is to create great German design. We appreciate that buying a kitchen is a big decision, which is why we like to really take the time to get to know our customers and understand their vision. We believe your kitchen should have the same individuality as you have. Our commitment Kutchenhaus manage your entire project locally, from measure, design, installation and aftercare, eliminating the need for big call centres. We also work closely with a wide variety of branded suppliers – Bosch, Miele, Neff, AEG and CDA – to bring you luxuries at the best prices. Come see us Our Kutchenhaus showroom with onsite car parking is located on Attercliffe Road (A6178), one of the main arterial routes east from the city centre linking with the M1 at junction 34. If you’re looking for ideas for your new kitchen, our showroom is packed with clever design solutions and a wide variety of

sample options, so you are sure to find something to suit your project. If you want an ultra-modern, sleek gloss handle-less design with hidden lighting solutions and top of the range appliances, we can create that in store! But of course, we can create more traditional shaker-style kitchens with clever interior space organisers too. Nothing is off limits here, we just want to create brilliant designs that reflect our customers’ needs and budgets. We also love to show off the gadgets available to add a little extra flair to your kitchen. Be sure to ask us about our selfopening (servo-drive) cabinet fronts, a MUST for tech geeks! We like to make use of our in-store AEG and NEFF appliances with cooking demonstrations to show you how to get the best out of your appliances; keep your eye on our social media for these events but feel free to ask us for a demo. RHIANA HUGHES’ TOP TIPS WILL HAVE YOUR GARDEN ON TREND IN NO TIME. or an increasing number of the British population, summer means less time spent in the office and more time spent at home in the garden. It seems that for a few months out of the year – or, more realistically the few days of the year where the sun decides to grace us with its presence – the presentation of our gardens becomes just as important as that of our homes. As is the case when it comes to interior design, when putting together our own garden spaces, everyone has different styles and tastes, and for some of us, we’ve no idea where to even begin. We’ve put together a list of this year’s top garden trends to get you green-thumbed in no time.

F

Low maintenance gardens

Indoor/Outdoor

The perfect trend for the novice gardener, or even those with years of experience who like the idea of spending more time in the garden rather than on it. Nothing but stress comes from a messy garden, so people are looking for simpler ways to keep on top of their backyards. It’s as easy as investing in quality stones that won’t constantly need repair or replacement, avoiding plants that need regular or intensive pruning and steering well clear of fast-growing hedges. Having a low maintenance garden isn’t all about cutting back though, as there are plenty of ways to keep an attractive garden without all the hard work you’d usually expect. Perennial plants are a must-have for any low maintenance garden, and there are plenty for you to choose from. Daylilies, peonies and hydrangeas are all beautiful flowers that can last years, even decades if kept in the right conditions. Whether you’re choosing to keep a low maintenance garden through necessity or preference, it’s a trend you can easily make your own.

2019 has seen outside elements come into our homes, with hanging baskets, herbs and all sorts of greenery appearing all over the house. It would appear that this trend is now working on its head too, with aspects of indoor living creeping into our outdoor spaces. Many are beginning to view their gardens as an extension of their indoor space, using sofas, rugs and cushions to dress their patio spaces as they would their living rooms. Bold prints and clashing colours are being used to add colour to gardens that would otherwise feel overwhelmingly green, while industrial and reclaimed materials are being used more City Folk Wave outdoor frequently in urban gardens cushion, £14.99. www.beanbagbazaar.co.uk with less space.

Holiday at home It’s become more and more popular over recent years for people to favour mini breaks in the UK over long flights to destinations abroad, and in 2019, staycations have moved even closer to home than ever before. An extension of the indoor/outdoor living trend, back garden staycation spots have become the ideal place for people to spend their summer evenings. Invest in outdoor furniture that not only looks the part but is comfortable too. Place it around a central focal point such as a fire pit, and ensure the space is well lit, whether it’s tea lights, lanterns or a line of hanging bulbs that suits your personal style. If you’re wanting your garden to be the hotspot of the summer, a weatherproof speaker system and an all-weather canopy are essential to keep your guests happy whatever the weather. LEFT: Don’t let the weather catch you out. This Sunnylife Outdoor Living Beach Retro Sounds Malibu is perfect for all weathers – and occasions. uk.sunnylife.com

Grow your own In 2019, people are increasingly looking to improve not only their personal health, but also their environmental and global impact. Veganism is on the rise and meat-eaters or not, many are starting to appreciate the importance of organic fruit and veg. Add to this constantly rising food prices, and it’s no wonder that people are starting to grow their own produce at home. Plenty of produce is much easier to grow than you may first think, and it’s possible to do so whether you’re working with a small or large garden. If space is a little tight, try growing vegetables, salads and herbs in a small patio container or a box on a balcony or windowsill. Runner beans, strawberries, radishes and lettuces are great if you’re wanting to make use of vertical space. Of course, if space isn’t an issue there are countless ways for you to start growing your own produce at home, and if you’re looking to go all out, consider investing in a greenhouse and increase your chances of growing healthy plants.

Whether you’re planting new flowerbeds, picking vegetables or pottering around in the shed or greenhouse, this trusty apron, £25, will ensure clothes stay clean. www.gardentrading.co.uk

Spider plant

Wellness Wellness may not be a term you’d immediately associate with gardening, but it’s one of the biggest trends of the year. Wellness is all about taking care of yourself, both mentally and physically, and people have taken to treating gardening as a form of therapy. Spending time working outside, whether that be planting, pruning or even just organising your outside space has been shown to help people feel calm and relaxed. Gardening is also great for the environmentally conscious. Searches for air purifying plants continue to grow, with peace lilies, spider plants, ferns and aloe vera all helping to clean air toxins. People are also starting to do more to help their local wildlife, with research showing that almost 70 per cent of British gardeners buy food for wildlife or provide a home for garden birds. How to shop the

summer sale TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY AND BAG A BARGAIN.

or bargain hunters, summer sales can be a thrilling experience. But before you dive in head first, take a moment consider some important advice, which could save you even more money. Follow our tips and you’ll never find yourself with a wardrobe full of unworn clothes or a garage full of unused gadgets again.

F

Set your priorities

Before you set off, or go online, make a no-negotiation list to ensure you don’t end up with piles of things you don’t need or want, just for the sake of the bargain. If you’re really organised you’ll already know the key items you’re hoping to bag but, if not, jot down your must-haves and put your energy into getting these first. This will also keep you focused when there are a thousand other things to distract you. Stock up on new-season trends

Fashion retailers often reduce the trendiest items the most, along with anything they didn’t get rid of in the January sales. This is often where the best buys can be had. Do your homework on key looks before you head 118 www.sheffieldvibe.com

out and you could save a fortune on pieces that will still be on-trend in months to come.

items you definitely want. Just be sure to choose wisely and then return within the allotted time – yes, even if you like absolutely everything.

Time it right

Go either super early or at the very last minute. If there’s something you’ve had your eye on all year that is likely to be reduced, get in there as soon as you can before it’s snapped up. Alternatively, if you’re less bothered about the specifics – for example, if you’d like a new TV but don’t mind which one – leaving it until the last possible opportunity will probably get you a bigger discount as prices are slashed further towards the end of the sale. Check the return policy

Big discounts tap into the most basic element of sales – urgency. The fear of missing out by not buying then and there is overwhelming but often leads to impulsive buying. The key here is to utilise the store’s return’s policy. Many shops allow you to return sales stock, even if it’s within fewer days than usual, so you can grab as much as you like and then try it all on at home when you’re more relaxed and can decide which

Do your research

The beauty of the internet is that, before you even step foot outside your front door, you can go online to check the best prices. Not only will you be able to identify which shops are offering the best deals, but if you note down how much you can find something for online, you’ll also make sure you don’t pay over the odds in store. Set a budget

It’s easy to get giddy at the sight of a 50per-cent-off ticket, but if it’s more than you were intending to spend, you won’t feel the full benefit. Keep a budget for each item in mind and stick to it. Invest wisely

Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the cost-per-wear should even out in time.

PROMOTION

Out of Africa AUDIOLOGIST PETER BYROM RECENTLY VISITED SENEGAL AS PART OF A CHARITY MISSION. HERE, HE TELLS WESTSIDE ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE.

What prompted you to go?

I work with Mr Olarinde, an ear, nose and throat (ENT) consultant, who undertakes an annual charity trip to help out in Africa. He was talking about the trip and I wondered out loud if an audiologist would be required. He was delighted that I was considering it. I am a believer in giving things back to people, especially when other people have been generous to me and I have never been to Africa. The charity work is undertaken annually by the West African College of Surgeons (WACS). What were the preparations like?

The main jabs were for yellow fever and there was medication to prevent malaria. I bought a mosquito net to sleep in at night and an ultraviolet battery-powered insect killer, along with all the usual painkillers and upset stomach relief just in case. There was advice to not walk 126 www.sheffieldvibe.com

around in bare feet, keep away from cats and dogs and not eat salad.

without difficulty and that for millions and millions of people it is home.

Were you nervous?

What were your first impressions?

As the date drew near I was a bit nervous, however I was aware that many, many people travel to Africa and back

When we landed at the modern airport and had a doctor pick us up it was quite pleasant, but driving into Dakar was an

eye-opener. Multiple half-built houses adorned the highway towards the capital city, but the centre was crowded, dusty and not as tidy as the UK. I was a bit surprised by the herds of goats on the pavements.

‘Houses’ like this adorn the highways

Where did you stay?

In a hotel not far from the coast. What work did you do?

The first day was spent organising clinics. I had been very kindly donated 50 NHS type hearing aids from Phonak, one of the major manufacturers, and a company who I use most often. Days two, three, and four were solid – from dawn till dusk I worked assessing hearing loss and fitting hearing aids in two separate hospitals. The first hospital had a crowd outside all day and I was unable to see them all. There was some disturbance and argument about people having access to the hearing aids. My box of hearing aids was worth the equivalent of a house in Senegal and most people cannot afford them. They are not available through public healthcare; be grateful for the NHS because it might not provide everything you want as fast as you want it but it does much more that is available elsewhere. It made me realise how privileged I am. I trained the local nurse who doubles up as an audiologist to look after and maintain the hearing aids. Helped by a nurse from the UK we fitted most of the hearing aids to great delight. From

young children to the elderly, the gratitude I experienced was immense. What were the good bits?

Obviously bringing hearing to those who wouldn’t have it otherwise. I also enjoyed the fish diet (very tasty barbecue fish) and the camaraderie of a very encouraging group of surgeons and anaesthetists – it was a privilege to be with them. I remained well throughout the trip and I didn’t get bitten by the mosquitoes.

island just off the coast where the slaves used to be kept. We were given a guided tour of the cells and the “point of no return”. It was a beautiful island away from the city, but heart-wrenching to hear the history of how one human can treat another. We also went out for an evening meal to a five-star hotel, paid for by a benefactor of the charity. The difference in the gated compound was huge and although it was very pleasant, it highlighted the huge gulf between those who have and those who don’t.

And the bad?

It was quite hot in the clinic room, which was a basic facility. I was hot and sweaty at the end of the day. The hospital conveniences were just a hole in the floor… Did you have a day off?

On the last day we went to the small

Anything else?

The flight home was cancelled so we had a bit of a runaround getting home. Would I do it again? Yes without a doubt. To arrange an appointment at Peter Byrom Audiology, call 0114 233 1800 or visit www.peterbyrom.co.uk

Put your trust in PA Jewellery IN THE FINAL PART OF OUR DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE, WE LOOK AT HOW CONFIDENCE IS KEY WHEN MAKING A PURCHASE THAT HAS BOTH EMOTIONAL AND FINANCIAL SIGNIFICANCE: YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT YOU ARE MAKING A WELLINFORMED DECISION. eople often talk about ‘the four Cs’ indicating the quality of a diamond: the cut, carat, colour and clarity we have discussed in previous articles. You may also hear ‘certificate’ or ‘confidence’ given as a ‘fifth C’. It is now commonplace for stones larger than around 0.30ct to have certificates or reports independently assessing their quality. This should give the stone’s colour, clarity and cut grades, as well as weight, measurements and shape. We tend to select stones that have been issued with a report from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). They are widely regarded as the most consistent laboratory for diamond grading, so you can be sure the information in the report is independent and accurate. There are many different bodies that issue diamond certificates and not all of them grade to the same

P

standards, so it is important to research beforehand to ensure your diamond is certificated by a qualified, independent and reputable laboratory. A thorough certificate can only be provided for a single diamond prior to it being mounted in jewellery: afterwards inclusions may be hidden by the setting and it isn’t possible to assess a stone from all angles. In pieces containing multiple stones there is often slight variation which cannot be accounted for. Therefore, a certificate may not be appropriate for an eternity ring or cluster piece. For pieces containing one or more diamonds of significant size, such as the centre stone of a halo cluster or pair of solitaire earrings, the stones may have individual reports. To make you feel confident in your purchase it is also important that you feel comfortable and in control

throughout the process. All our staff are professional jewellers with several of them qualified gemmologists and diamond graders. They have the experience and expertise to answer your questions and offer helpful advice and are always willing to talk you through your options without a pressurised sales environment. We have a wide selection of diamonds available to view in our showroom, of assorted sizes and grades, with something to suit every budget. Why not browse on our website first and then pop in for a chat with one of our jewellers; there’s no need to book an appointment. Important growth EMMA REES-OXLEY IS THE PRE-SCHOOL LEAD AND HEAD OF EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) AT WESTBOURNE SCHOOL, THE INDEPENDENT COEDUCATIONAL SCHOOL IN SHEFFIELD’S BROOMHILL. teacher with more than a decade’s experience, Mrs ReesOxley has played a key role in the development of Westbourne’s provision for its youngest pupils. “Our Pre-School, which was opened by actor and celebrated Westbourne old boy Dominic West in 2013, has continued to increase in numbers and we have increased from 13 children per session to 28,” she says. “As a result of this important growth, we have extended our facilities and in summer 2018 we invested £100,000 in our EYFS outdoor provision and in the development of our amazing Forest School outdoor area, with an outdoor classroom which allows us to get outside whatever the weather. The development of such a successful Pre-School also helps ease transition into mainstream education for young children. “The close collaboration between Pre-

A

School and Reception allows us to recognise different levels of ability and personalise the children’s learning to meet their individual needs,” Mrs ReesOxley explains. “We have also introduced Target Tracker, an Early Years Learning Goals assessment tool, which allows us to share learning and children’s achievements and successes with their parents.” Part of an on-going programme of developments has this year seen the launch of the Westbourne Stay and Play, designed specifically to meet the needs of under-fives – including babies! The sessions take place every Thursday from 10-11am in term time, with refreshments provided for both carers and children. “We are very excited to have started our Stay and Play, giving us the opportunity to meet children and parents and interact with them and share our

facilities – we have a rolling programme of events and themes including a Forest School session which has been really well received,” says Mrs Rees-Oxley. Another sign of the Headteacher’s belief in the values and standards offered by Westbourne is that her own children – eight-year-old Alfie and Ollie, aged six – are both pupils at the school. “They both love school, the whole experience, from Forest School to performing in concerts or representing the school at cricket,” she says.

Welcome return BIRKDALE HEADMASTER PETER HARRIS IS PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING CHILDREN TO BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE. r Peter Harris joined the teaching staff at Birkdale in 1998 teaching Geography, became Head of Department and left after ten years to take up senior roles in the South of England. He returned to Birkdale in January as Headmaster. “I am a Southerner by birth but I fell in love with Sheffield when I came to the city to study over 28 years ago and am delighted it is now, once again, my home,” he said. Birkdale is a school for boys aged 4-18 with a thriving co-educational Sixth Form. “No two days are the same. Life is fast-paced and very varied,” explains Mr Harris. “A typical day might include taking assembly, meeting with parents and staff and dropping into lessons. As a Geography teacher I am looking forward to getting back into the classroom and especially into the ‘field’!” Mr Harris describes himself as a

M

‘people person’ and takes great pride in the exceptionally high standard of pastoral care within the school. “Whether at Prep School, Senior School or Sixth Form, we have a warm, caring and supportive environment, which produces a real family environment, something I am particularly proud of and keen to nurture. We have excellent relationships between students and teachers, and indeed the entire community,” he said. “I particularly value the importance of our Christian principles which underpin the fabric of Birkdale and its activities. “A great example of our family focus as a school is Birkdale Prep. Here, I work alongside the Head of the Prep School, Chris Burch. It is a really special place full of happy, confident children who are eager to learn and full of energy and enthusiasm. I will enjoy seeing them grow and develop as they move through the Prep School and

into Birkdale Senior School. Birkdale is proud of what we like to call our ‘lifers’ – those who have enjoyed their whole school life at Birkdale from age four to 18.” But Headmaster Peter is not one to rest on his laurels and is keen to see Birkdale be the best it can be. He adds: “I am passionate about education and I intend to build upon the existing Birkdale core principles: academic ambition; Christian ethos and well-rounded education. “Birkdale is undoubtedly an academic school achieving outstanding examination results, but that is only part of the story. We provide a balanced curriculum by offering outstanding sporting, drama, music and outdoor pursuits opportunities in a caring, nurturing and supportive environment.”

‘19 for 2019’ TEENAGER EVE HEATHCOTE IS PUTTING HER BEST FOOT FORWARD TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CHARITY THAT HELPED HER FAMILY THROUGH AN IMMENSELY TOUGH TIME. e all know the statistics. Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer, and the chances are that every single one of us knows someone who’s currently fighting, has won, or has unfortunately lost their battle with the disease. Fifteen-year-old Eve Heathcote from Stannington knows all too well the impact that cancer can have on a family, as five years ago her aunt was diagnosed. Though it’s not been an easy journey, Eve’s aunt is now in much better health, and Eve is putting her best foot forward – literally – to raise money for the

W

136 www.sheffieldvibe.com

charity that helped her family through an immensely tough time. Eve has challenged herself to complete 19 runs in 2019, donating the money she raises to Sheffield’s Weston Park Cancer Charity. While her aunt was undergoing treatment, it was Weston Park that helped support both her aunt and the rest of the family through the tough time. “When I would go to see my aunt I noticed that there were some people who weren’t getting the support they needed, but everyone needs help when

they’re going through something like this,” says Eve. “I wanted to make sure nobody felt alone, and even if I can only help one person, it’ll all be worth it.” It wasn’t a question in Eve’s mind that she’d start raising money for Weston Park as soon as she could, and an already very active young woman, it didn’t take her long to decide on the mammoth task she has ahead of her. So far, Eve has completed one run each month, already raising over £250 for Weston Park. And no two runs are the same either, with Eve taking part in any and everything she can, from 5 and

HEROES

10k runs to park runs and even obstacle courses and paint runs. Every event Eve takes part in is raising money for its own chosen charity too. Eve’s mother Tina takes care of the entry fees for Eve’s runs, meaning that as well as raising money for Weston Park, there are countless other charities benefitting too. Taking part in 19 runs in one year would seem a lot for even the most seasoned athletes, but Eve has no plans to stop raising money for Weston Park when she reaches her goal. Her work won’t stop in between either, as when she’s not running she’s fundraising in other ways – you can see Eve and mum Tina at the Bolehill Rite Trax festival selling a stall full of goodies on Saturday 3 August. ‘19 for 2019’ might be the latest challenge that Eve has set herself, but it’s certainly not the first she’s embarked on. At just eight years old, even before her aunt fell ill, Eve donated 11 inches of her hair to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young people with hair loss, and funds vital research into childhood cancer. And Eve’s hair journey didn’t stop there. After her aunt lost her hair following chemotherapy treatment, she did something many of us wouldn’t be strong enough to do. “I offered to shave my head when my

aunt first got cancer,” says Eve. “But she said not to worry. Then a while later she said ‘Eve, do you still want to do it?’ and I said yeah, I just thought, why not!” With her locks having grown back, it’s green hair that’s next on the agenda for Eve (she hopes), as she says she’ll do almost anything to help out and raise money for the charity that did so much for her family. Even after just five minutes into my conversation with Eve, it was clear that she is an immensely compassionate, driven and selfless young woman. I found myself in awe of her unwavering and inspiring determination, and left

with no doubt in my mind that Eve will achieve if not surpass her goal. If you know of any upcoming events you think Eve might like to take part in, please visit the ‘Eve’s 19 for 19 Challenge & Fundraising’ page on Facebook.

If you’d like to donate money to help support Eve you can visit: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/TinaHeathcote To donate or find out more about Weston Park Cancer Charity visit: www.westonpark.org.uk

Hat-trick for Keebles

Sheffield based Wake Smith Solicitors has announced two internal Associate promotions. Clinical Negligence solicitor Kate Lax and Commercial Property solicitor Laura Sanderson have been promoted to Associate Solicitor level, recognising their skill and commitment in their respective fields. Kate has specialised in clinical negligence claims at Wake Smith since qualifying in 2013 and has seen her caseload develop with a number of significant successes over the last year. She has also taken an active role in the supervision, and development of, junior fee earners including paralegals and trainees. Laura joined Wake Smith in 2016 and has brought significant experience in retail and landlord and tenant work, acquisitions, disposals and lease work to the firm’s busy and progressive commercial property department.

Keebles has been named the Corporate Law Firm of the Year for the third year running, as well as winning three other categories at the Sheffield City Region Dealmakers’ Awards. Securing the Corporate Law Firm of the Year award, Keebles was recognised for advising on many of the region’s highprofile deals in the qualifying period having been shortlisted 13 times at this year’s event. The judging panel noted the team as “excellent” and particularly praised the leadership of the firm’s head of corporate, Matt Ainsworth. As well as Corporate Law Firm of the Year, Keebles won the Deal of the Year award (up to £2.5million) for the management buyout of Harvest Healthcare. The firm also secured the top spot for the Mid-Market Deal of the Year (between £2.5million and £10million) for advising HSBC on its funding package to support acquisitions by Coppergreen Developments. And Keebles also won the Deal of the Year (£10million+) for advising on the sale of ALTEK Group to Harsco Corporation. Matt Ainsworth, Partner and Head of Corporate, said: “It is a credit to the whole team. We take great pride in going the extra mile for our clients, getting the results they need and ensuring we always go above and beyond. To have won four awards at such a prestigious ceremony is a fantastic achievement.”

Belinda Lancaster, of Sheffield law firm Graysons, was the winner of one of the first Omnia fundraising initiatives, a gin raffle which raised a total of £147. The Omnia team have already held a Bake Off and a Dress Down Day in support of the challenge and with several members of staff about to embark on maternity leave, colleagues are also organising a fundraising baby sweepstake. Capable of producing complex moulds and cores for oil, gas, aerospace and automotive without the need for dedicated tooling, the technology has been exploited for R&D, pre-production and full-scale production volumes at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). AMRC Castings, which is part of the AMRC and is based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Catcliffe, now has two of the additive manufacturing machines for the printing of one-piece 3D sand moulds and complex cores that would ordinarily require significant capital investment in pattern equipment and multiple core-boxes to be made and assembled.

Out of this world Astronauts and space rockets are set to land in Sheffield city centre this summer as Sheffield BID brings back its hugely successful Bricktropolis. Building on the success of the World Landmarks trail last year, this summer sees a new Outer Space theme join the Bricktropolis programme – set to run from 17-30 August. To celebrate 50 years of the moon landing, Outer Space is a galactic visitor trail of LEGO® brick models, all constructed by Bright Bricks – the UK’s only professional LEGO-brick building company. Families are invited to take part in a journey of discovery that follows humankind from Earth to the stars, with an array of planets, astronauts, space vehicles and rockets to find along the interstellar trail. Find the Vostok I and Saturn V rockets, join Neil Armstrong on the moon and even meet a friendly visitor from outer space. There are 15 incredible space models in total. Standing at 1.9m tall, the Neil Armstrong model is made up of more than 57,000 bricks, while the 2.8m-tall Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket has 68,583 bricks. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “Last year, Sheffield Bricktropolis and its trail of world-famous landmarks attracted over 25,000 visitors. We hope to build on that success this year with a fantastic new outer space theme. “The trail is designed to encourage people to explore all corners of the city centre and not just the well-trodden routes.” Sign up for updates at www.sheffieldbricktropolis.com.

We are separating – what should I do next?

BRADIE PELL, HEAD OF THE FAMILY DEPARTMENT AT GRAYSONS SOLICTORS, LOOKS AT THE STEPS TO TAKE IN THE EARLY DAYS OF YOUR SEPARATION. hen a relationship comes to an end, it’s difficult to know what to do next. You have spent a considerable period of your life with someone and you are entering into unchartered territory. Our family team here at Graysons is known for providing high quality, nononsense legal advice when people are separating or divorcing, but we recognise that sometimes you just want to know what you can do next. Whilst we understand that one size doesn’t fit all situations, here, Bradie Pell, head of our family department offers some tips in respect of practical steps that you may wish to take in the early days of your separation.

W

1. Make a note of the date that you separated. For some, this will be ingrained in their memory, but for others who have had various periods of separation, this can be more of a blur. Try to identify the date when you both agreed the relationship was over, even if you actually remained in the same house after that date. The date of separation will be amongst the first questions various agencies and solicitors will ask. 2. If children are involved, think about how you are going to explain the separation to them. Try to discuss the interim care arrangements, such as will you both continue to do this and will one person have specific roles, for example, collection and return from school/nursery? It is much better if you can agree this between you, but if you can’t, seek early legal advice and 140 www.sheffieldvibe.com

avoid exposing the children to conflict. If there are concerns surrounding harm to the children or domestic violence you should also seek early legal advice. 3. If possible, try to think about practicalities. When a relationship comes to an end, there are a number of things to consider: children, pets, the house, its contents, sharing of income, payment of bills, use of banks accounts and so on. Make a list of what you need to resolve and try to address each aspect individually. Again, it can be much easier if you can discuss this together, but if not, you could consider agreeing a channel of communication that works for you, such as email. The aim is to try to agree a “holding position” between you until you can finalise the long-term arrangements. For example, how is the mortgage or rent going to be paid, are you both going to stay in the same house whilst the matters are resolved or is one person going to move out? Remember, the initial arrangements may not be your ideal solution, but they are supposed to be interim, at least until you obtain some legal advice (if you haven’t already) and decide what you would like to happen long term. It may be helpful for you to seek advice before the separation is finalised or very shortly after. 4. Think about going to mediation. You can self-refer to mediation and this can be a useful forum, in the right circumstances, to try to avoid disputes. The mediation provider will guide you through the

Bradie Pell – head of Graysons’ family department

options and help you to discuss matters that are in dispute; this could be finances or matters surrounding children. If you manage to reach an agreement in mediation, this can then usually be put into a legally binding document that a solicitor can help you with. You can also obtain legal advice alongside mediation. The mediator cannot give you legal advice. You would both need separate legal advice. These suggestions may help you to sort out some aspects of your separation, but if you feel that you need legal advice, or you are married or in a civil partnership and wish to move on to divorce or dissolution of civil partnership, contact our experts now. We will arrange a meeting in which we can discuss your individual circumstances and offer advice on your options. Heads in the clouds Supporters of St Luke’s Hospice had their heads in the clouds as they hit the heights for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. The celebrated 26-mile trek takes walkers through the stunning Yorkshire scenery of the Dales National Park, starting with smallest of the peaks, Pen-y-ghent, before going on over 12 hours to tackle the summits of Ingleborough and Whernside, climbing a final total of 1,585 metres. Even heavy rain, persistent drizzle and low cloud that shrouded the famous triple peaks throughout most of the day couldn’t stop more than 40 walkers from crossing the finish line in less than 12 hours. And with a special sponsorship package from Yorkshire Windows, the event raised more than £17,000. “Even on the perfect summer’s day this is a tough challenge – and this was nothing like the perfect day,” said St Luke’s fundraising assistant Karan Taylor. “Our walkers may have been soaked but they didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits and they were all determined to make it a very special day of fundraising. “We’ll be back again next year, with more walkers than ever before and hopefully some sunshine!”

JORDAN CUTFORTH HAS ELECTRIC DREAMS ABOUT VAUXHALL’S NEW EC0-FRIENDLY CITY CAR.

All-electric Corsa If there was the perfect city car for Britain, this would be it; say hello to the first ever all-electric Vauxhall Corsa. Combine all-electric propulsion with one of the UK’s best-selling cars and you’re certainly onto a winner. With a 205-mile range, which can be extended by 40 per cent in Eco mode, the Corsa-e can be charged at home and at designated rapid charge points, which allows it to be 80 per cent charged within 30 minutes. With 136bhp and 260NM of torque the Corsa-e does the 0-62mph time in 8.1 seconds and the 0-30mph time in 2.8 seconds. These are very quick figures for such a small car. So now you can drive your favourite hatchback, at speed without worrying about the environment.

Exotic looks The ultimate in BMW luxury has now become topless. The 8-Series was the concept which took the world by storm with its striking design. Now these concept looks can be even more exotic with the removal of the roof. Two engines will be offered at launch: a V8 petrol engine in the 530hp BMW M850i xDrive and a 320hp six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 840d xDrive. Performance figures are a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds for the former, 5.2 seconds for the latter. Both have a electronically limited top speed of 155mph with combined fuel economy figures of 26.6mpg for the former and 39.8mpg for the latter. Available to order now priced from £83,295.

Sporty new look The first Discovery Sport was an instant hit thanks to its premium quality and compact seven-seat configuration combined with Land Rover’s impeccable four-wheel drive system. With this new version, this is no different. The new Discovery Sport has an updated exterior design reminiscent with the bigger brother Discovery. The inside has been updated creating a slightly more premium feel, tech inside the cabin has been upgraded, as has the interior space which has increased too meaning passengers have a more enjoyable experience. There are new hybridised engines available too allowing the Discovery Sport to be much more fuel efficient. Available in two or four-wheeldrive. The all-new Land Rover Discovery Sport is available to order now priced from £31,575. 146 www.sheffieldvibe.com

More power, more space The Ford Focus ST, a staple for hot-hatchery in the UK, has been officially released in its estate body style. Like the hatchback variant, the estate will be powered by a 2.3-litre EcoBoost 276bhp petrol or 187bhp 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine. The more powerful petrol will be available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission while the diesel will only be available with the six-speed manual. Advanced tech in the Focus ST include an electronic limited-slip differential, rev-matching and selectable Drive Modes which all help in the performance of the car. Priced from £30,595 for the diesel and £33,095 for the petrol.
