It’s a tourist attraction that dates back to the 18th century. A new exhibition - A Mirror on the Past - is a walk through time that puts the focus on how the lives, and fashions, of visitors from the past 230-years differ to the modern visitor today. We take a closer look. Elsewhere we switch our focus to weddings and the importance of planning for the big day.We meet some local businesses with the expertise to make sure your special day is everything you dreamed. We also have our usual mix of eating out, homes, gardens, motoring and more.

EATING OUT
A fitting feast SUNDAY LUNCH AT BARLOW WOODSEATS HALL IS A MAJESTIC AFFAIR, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. s far as restaurant welcomes go, it’s right up there with the best. It’s not very often you turn up for Sunday lunch and be greeted by a peacock, but that’s exactly what happened on our recent visit to Barlow Woodseats Hall. Perched atop a barrel at the side of entrance was the most splendid creature you’ve ever set eyes on, shining bright blue in the sunshine and looking every inch as majestic as you can imagine. Apparently the sight of peacock is as not as uncommon as you might think at the Derbyshire venue; there’s several roaming the grounds and we even spotted a peahen too. All in all, it got our visit off to the best possible start. Barlow Woodseats Hall, which dates back to 1530, is traditionally known as a wedding and events venue but also opens on Friday evenings for tapas and Sundays for lunch. Indeed on the day of our visit, the floral remnants of the previous day’s wedding were evident whilst the tables and chairs had a distinct wedding feel. It makes Sunday lunch much more of an occasion. Sunday lunch is served inside the tudor barn, complete with its beautiful timber cruck arches and stone walls.
A
16 www.sheffieldvibe.com
There’s a well stocked bar at the entrance as well as a small mezzanine area just above. Once served with drinks – a Black Sheep bitter (£4.20) for me, large Merlot (£6.60) for my wife and J20 for my children (£2.50) – we took our seats at our grand table and awaited our lunch. The traditional Sunday roast at Barlow Woodseats Hall is served as a three-meat platter (£25pp) and accompaniments and laid out on the table for everyone to share. It’s a great way to eat, particularly for large parties or those fussy eaters who can just indulge in everything they like and minimise waste. Our platter came with blushing slices of roast beef, breast and leg of chicken and slices of roast pork, all cooked beautifully. It was dressed with pigs in blankets, stuffing balls and shards of crisp crackling. Also brought to the table were the ‘best’ roast potatoes (they were), cheese covered leeks, and roast parsnips and carrots. It was a feast fitting for such a venue - credit goes to chef Lee Hawksworth and his team. There was far too much for the four of us to finish but the staff gratefully packaged up our leftovers, which we
enjoyed in a sandwich later that evening. Dessert is included in the set price and there was a choice of Eton mess, chocolate brownie, ice cream or a cheese platter. My wife and I opted for the Eton mess, a perfect combination of meringue, cream and summer fruits, whilst my children indulge their sweet tooths with a brownie (for him) and chocolate ice cream (for her). Barlow Woodseats Hall is a charming venue. It has all the majesty of a wedding venue but without the formality. Sunday lunch is a relaxed affair and made for sharing. If the sun is shining there are gardens to explore and plenty of outdoor seating too. Don‘t forget to look out for the peacocks. WEDDINGS
o, you have accepted his/her proposal and are now dreaming of the perfect, sparkling white dress for your big day. The white dress is so synonymous with weddings, you would be forgiven for thinking blushing brides have always dressed this way. However, history buffs and marriage enthusiasts alike may be interested to learn that it hasn’t always been this way. Read on to discover the weird, wonderful – and not necessarily romantic – origins of the modern day wedding dress.
S
Wedding origins WHY DO BRIDES WEAR WHITE, AND SHOULD YOU REALLY INCLUDE GARLIC IN YOUR BOUQUET? WE DELVE INTO THE HISTORY OF WEDDING DRESS TRADITIONS.
The dress Contrary to popular belief, the white dress wasn’t chosen to represent the purity and innocence of the bride, but became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding day in 1840. Victoria (the trend-setting Kardashian of her time) wore a plain white dress to marry Prince Albert simply because she liked the colour. But, she wasn’t the first to do so. Mary Queen of Scots wore white when she married Dauphin François of France in 1558. Although back then, this was considered scandalous, as white was traditionally worn by royal ladies in mourning. Before Victoria’s influential white dress, women of high social standing wore rich and bold colours to show off their status. Back in the Middle Ages, as it was routine for royals to marry for political gain rather than love, the bride needed to make sure she impressed the elite groom with her wealth and beauty. The wife-to-be was responsible for representing her country and so needed to exhibit power, wealth and superiority to be a desirable candidate for an alliance. To show these traits, the seamstress would use the most lavish materials, silk, satin and fur being popular choices. So by the time Victoria’s white dress came along, brides all over Britain wanted to follow suit. One popular lady’s monthly magazine described white as “the most fitting hue” for any bride. After that, white was considered the must-have colour and merchants saw this as an opportunity to up the prices of their garments. The white dress therefore became a symbol of wealth and desirability – a trend that is seemingly here to stay. Well, every bride wants to feel like a queen, right?
The veil and train
The bouquet
The veil and train on the other hand, originated much further back in Roman times. Roman brides were swaddled from head to toe in a gigantic flame-coloured veil called the flammeum as it was believed its fiery appearance would scare off evil spirits. There is evidence to suggest that veils continued to be worn to protect brides’ faces well into medieval times. Similarly, bridesmaids wore similar dresses to the bride to confuse the spirits. The veil and train also prevented brides from running away from their grooms – and vice versa, as the bride’s face would usually only be revealed to the groom at the end of the ceremony. The lifting of the veil was also used as a symbol of the groom taking possession of his new wife and accepting her for all she was – for better or for worse. Moving closer to the modern day, everything a young princess wore on her wedding day was considered chic. Everyone wanted to emulate the regal style and as lengths of material signalled a more lavish and expensive dress, long trains were adopted by more ‘common’ brides – another element of the wedding dress that has stood the test of time.
Flowers may seem like the most romantic part of your wedding attire, but again, they were a device to ward off those pesky evil spirits. This ritual stems from a 17th century tradition of having fragrant herbs and plants such as garlic and dill in your bouquet. That’s right – garlic! The 1600s are famous for the plague epidemic and potent herbs like these were used in a desperate attempt to survive the disease. Not only were herbs thought to be good for your health (and as it turns out, rightly so), their strong scent was thought to ward off spirits. It will come as no surprise then, why would-be brides were keen to catch the bouquet – it wasn’t just their married life that depended on it. Female guests would also try to rip off pieces of the bride’s dress and flowers on her big day in order to obtain some of her good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away. However, we can’t imagine women attracting many potential partners carrying this kind of bouquet around all day. www.sheffieldvibe.com 17

On the up and up AFTER 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS THERE’S NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN FOR THE GREEDY GREEK DELI. BY RICHARD ABBEY. ast month in Westside we put the spotlight on long-standing family businesses, those that have stood the test of time, triumphed over adversity and continue to go from strength to strength. One of the businesses we featured was the The Greedy Greek Deli, the Sharrow Vale Road stalwart that this year celebrates 20 years in business. It’s significant milestone for the Mouzakis family who arrived from Zante with the intention of brining authentic, traditional Greek food to Sheffield. The deli has become a firm favourite over the years and is testament to the hard work of husband and wife team Dennis and Helen. The deli has evolved over the years and offers much more than your takeaway gyros, souvlaki and salads and is now home to an upstairs restaurant as well as an outside catering service - The Deli Direct. Which all means there’s rarely a quiet moment at The Greedy Greek Deli. As we arrived on what we thought would be a quiet Monday evening the deli was already buzzing and Helen was putting the finishing touches to a birthday banquet that was getting ready to be delivered. After that there was just the small matter of their concession at the Sheffield Food Festival to organise as

The restaurant offered something of a respite to all the hustle and bustle and was a pleasant space to spend an hour or two indulging in some fine Mediterranean food. Helen’s son Giannis was on hand to guide us through any questions about the menu, which is extensive. We started with a mini meze (£12.80), which was perfect for sharing and included stuffed chilli peppers, olives, sun dried tomatoes, stuffed vine leaves and feta cheese. It was a great introduction and whetted the appetite for what was to follow. My wife had a hankering for a traditional pork gyros (£7.65) and the Greedy Greek’s version is as good as you’ll find. The grilled pitta bread was full to bursting with spit roast pork, mixed salad, tzatziki and strofilia dip and was just delicious, all the flavours working tremendously in harmony. I opted for the soutzoukakia (£13), which were three huge and incredibly meaty beef meatballs cooked with tomato, onion, garlic and cumin. The robust flavours packed a real punch to make a real winner of a dish. We also shared a portion of lemon potatoes (£6), which I love and were a great accompaniment to the meatballs.
Quarters of pitta bread (£1.30) were great for mopping up the lemon and tomato sauces. Children are well catered for at The Greedy Greek Deli and my son’s chicken skewer, chips and salad (£6.80) would have satisfied even the largest of appetites. There’s no alcohol licence but there’s a good choice of soft drinks, waters, milkshakes and coffees. We drank cans of Pepsi and Tango Orange (£1.70). To finish, Giannis brought us bitesize pieces of baclava (£5.90) and karidopita (£5.90) - walnut and cinnamon cake which was served with a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream. It was a sweet and lovely way to end the meal. It’s easy to see why The Greedy Greek Deli is so popular - here’s to the next 20 years. f someone mentioned the Heights of Abraham to you what would your initial thought be? The cable cars? I’m sure it’s very often the first thing that springs to mind but there’s much more to this picturesque area of Matlock Bath. In fact, the cable cars are one of the more recent additions to a tourist attraction which has a history stretching back 235 years. Transport yourself back to 1750 and Matlock Bath was full of wealthy Georgian tourists who believed that ‘taking the waters’ of Matlock Bath would do wonders for their health. One entrepreneurial hotel owner decided this was a great opportunity to make money – and so bought land on Masson Hill in 1780 to create a ‘pleasure ground’. It took the businessman seven years to plant exotic trees and shrubs, create serpentine paths, and generally tidy the area up after years of mining had left it a barren wasteland. Once the site was ready, tourists from far and wide came to walk up the paths and experience the sublime 360-degree views from the summit. Now fast-forward to 1810… The Heights of Abraham had become an established attraction, known throughout the UK and frequented by the rich and famous. The Great Rutland Cavern was opened to the public, followed by the Great Masson Cavern in 1844. Ex-miners became tour guides, showing the wealthy tourists around the mines for a high price. In 1974, the present owners bought the estate and had great visions for the future. After ten years of restoring the Heights to their former glory, they decided the site needed something new to please the modern tourists. This was when the cable car was built. There’s no better way to start the day at the Heights of Abraham than by taking a flight in one of these famous cable cars. Travel across the picturesque Derwent Valley and enjoy the views of Matlock Bath below; the journey takes you over 554ft upwards to the summit, 1,000ft above sea level. But it’s not just the views from the cable car that impress, there’s a new view around every corner once you reach the summit; there are views of peaks and valleys everywhere you look. As well as heading up you can head down too by taking a tour underground in the two famous show caverns – the Great Rutland and Great Masson caverns. Follow one of the professional cavern guides deep into the hillside and learn tales of mining, history, geology,

and tourism from those who know it best. After that, take a stroll across the landscaped gardens that portray both the dark and light Peak District to the new film theatre to learn more about the formation of the caverns and enjoy a newly updated film about the construction of the cable cars. Derbyshire’s oldest tourist attraction continues to add new attractions and facilities every year and 2022 promises to be a bumper year for new features; this year sees a collection of stunning willow sculptures, a butterfly ISPY trail for younger visitors, a new film theatre and gift shop, and a fantastic period costume exhibition that offers a walk-through time. Called A Mirror on the Past, this new exhibition is a walk through time that puts the focus on how the lives, and fashions, of visitors from the past 230-years differ to the modern visitor today. Housed in the newly refurbished Masson Pavilion at the summit of the Heights of Abraham, you can marvel at 14 delightfully dressed figures that show what visitors of the past would have worn on their day out to the

60-acre attraction. Informative digital displays throughout the exhibition space give a glance into what life was like for the visitors from the past. In modern times, information about the world around us can be found in an instant. Travel has broadened our understanding of places and landscapes. Books and digital media allow us to quickly find information on any subject we care to investigate. But… it wasn’t always this easy! If you visited the Heights when it first opened in 1787 you would have a very limited understanding of the world around you. Everything was new, exciting and different. As a consequence, people were often overwhelmed by what they saw. It was during this time, the Age of Enlightenment, that people became fascinated by new scientific discoveries and were curious to understand more about the natural world. The Romantic poets, writers and artists looked at the landscape with renewed intellectual vision. Notable society figures, from William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, Mary
Shelley, Jane Austen to Princess Victoria came in search of the ‘sublime’, awesome beauty, ‘of terrors and awe-inspiring natural phenomena’. How they dressed for these adventures on the hills and in the caverns never seemed to cross their minds! They wore clothes that to us seem highly inappropriate. It wasn’t easy, climbing the steep hill in their amazing, intricate outfits. Early visitors showed their wealth through expensive fabrics and elaborate decoration, and this wasn’t limited to the finest occasion! As times changed, visitors to the Heights dressed differently, following

fashions and influences from those most famous around them, much as we do today. Inventions made during the industrial revolution improved living standards, sanitation, education and literacy. People became more aware of the world around them and could travel more easily. These changes slowly paved the way for the how we are today but back in 1787, it was a very different world. After the cable car and exhibition you’ll be in need of refreshment and there’s no better view than that offered by the Vista Restaurant and Terrace Café, which sits 1,000ft above sea level. The exclusive Vista balcony gives views for miles across the valley, a great place to soak up the surroundings while enjoying a freshly made meal, accompanied by a local ale or gin. Or take a light lunch with friends in the downstairs café, with far-reaching views to enjoy with a hot drink and a delicious cake. There’s also adventure playgrounds for children to let off steam, with picnic benches nearby.
Access to everything at the Heights estate is included in the cable car ticket, giving you entry to fascinating exhibitions, historic buildings, spectacular viewpoints and more.
Factbox The Heights is open daily until 6 November, from 10am until 4:30pm, later during school holidays and weekends. Ticket Prices: Advanced booking is strongly recommended. Tickets booked online are £23 per adult, £15 per child and £69 for a family of two adults and two children. Under fives go free. Carers to disabled guests are also admitted free of charge. Power to the people FIVE GENERATIONS OF THE WILLIAMS FAMILY HAVE BEEN PUTTING CUSTOMERS FIRST FOR 117 YEARS. illiams Electrical was established in 1905 by Walter Williams, the great-grandfather of current managing director Karen Putland, and has been in the heart of Woodseats ever since. With Karen’s daughter recently joining the business, the family business is now into its fifth generation and continues to evolve. It’s origins are somewhat different to what you’ll find at 783-787 Chesterfield Road today and the family have had their fair share of ups and downs in the 117 years that has preceded Williams’ inception. Having started out selling bicycles, radios and model railways the business quickly adapted by adding a car inspection pit and petrol pump in the rear of the building so they could repair Richardson cars, which were built in Sheffield during the war. The petrol pump was only removed in the 1970s but the now hidden car pit remains today. “As technology changed the same batteries that we used in bicycle lights were used in radios and so a new product line was added and our evolution began,” explains Karen. “Now we are proud to be the area’s leading independent specialist supplier of top brand electrical goods, aiming to offer the best value for money deals on the high street.”

Before we get on to the successes, Karen recalls some of the trials the business has faced over the years.
The Williams family circa 1954
“The war years were a challenge for everyone, and then we had the three-day working week of the seventies when we had to trade with candles and in near darkness because of the blackouts,” she says. “The financial crisis of 2008 was a challenging time and changed the retail landscape permanently and then came the pandemic… “Just like the other difficult times we changed to adapt and traded throughout, providing necessary deliveries to the NHS and all our customers who needed essential household appliances such as

cookers, washers and fridge freezers. “With doors closed we strove to support our community in any way we could, changing our practices to ensure we could be there to support and help safely.” If anything, the last couple of years has shown the importance of community and of shopping local – and Williams have reaped the benefits. The closure of a certain city centre department store had a big impact too. “For a lot of people, their default was always John Lewis,” comments Karen. “Now people have realised they can get everything they need - and more - by shopping locally and we’re not ashamed to say that we offer much better service too.” Excellent customer service is at the heart of everything Williams Electrical do, a sentiment echoed by Karen. “Being a family business customer service is at our very core. We care about our customers and pride ourselves on the service we offer,” she said. “We listen and our personal approach is what makes us different to most large national retailers. You can visit our shop to speak with our experienced staff or give us a call (no call centres) to discuss any of our products you might be interested in or for help and support with any product you may have purchased.” Check out their customer reviews on Google and Trustpilot and you can’t fail to be impressed with the levels of service they offer. Williams Electrical is proudly independent but as part of Europe’s largest buying group, Euronics, has access to a huge range of top brand electricals at competitive prices, including those from Samsung, Sony, LG, Bosch, Neff, Siemens, AEG, Smeg, and many others. Loyal, long-standing staff are experienced and knowledgeable in the products they sell. “If you are interested in seeing the latest technology from OLED and 4K Ultra High Definition TVs to the latest music streaming and audio systems, our sales team offer instore demonstrations as well and putting your choice of TV and sound bar or audio system together for you to experience before you buy,” adds Karen. “We have a huge range of white goods, including washing machines, tumble dryers, fridge freezers and cookers and built-in appliances, for which we offer a complete installation service. All this is complemented by
vacuum cleaners, microwaves and small household appliances.” Delivery is readily available and Williams offer a bespoke installation service, from a simple TV wall mount to a complete multi-room entertainment system. The offer a recycling service too as well as rental options should you wish spread the cost of any purchase. And the service from Williams Electrical doesn’t stop there, they also have proud links with the community and are currently sponsoring many local football teams as well as supporting Sheffield FC in their bid to move to a new purposebuilt stadium at Meadowhead. They also partnered with Woodseats Medical and Dr Datchler to provide a fully-accessible, 24hour powered defibrillator to the community in 2019. estival season returns in earnest this year. After two years of Covid-affected events, 2022 should see a big return to normality – as much as it can – which is great news for music fans. Glastonbury’s back, Leeds and Reading will be going ahead again but while the ‘big’ festivals may grab the headlines, you’ll struggle to find a better value-for-money line-up than at Sheffield’s Tramlines. Sam Fender, Kasabian and Madness take the top slots on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively and will be joined by the likes of James, The Vaccines, Sigrid, Self-Esteem, The Wombats and Becky Hill. And there’s more. Sheffield’s biggest city-based music festival recently announced its latest additions to the lineup – and it looks like festival-goers are in for a treat. Joining the headliners at the already sold-out event in Hillsborough Park will be Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Lady Leshurr, Alfie Templeman and Kelis. They’ll be joined by Crawlers, Bleach Lab, Baby Queen, The Clockworks and Elvana. Comedy will also be making a return to the festival, which takes place between 22-24 July, with a huge line-up including headliners Jason Manford, Russell Kane and Seann Walsh. Timm Cleasby, Tramlines operations director, said: “After the amazing spirit that everyone brought to Tramlines 2021 and how the team delivered an amazing festival in challenging times, we’re all back working hard to make 2022 better than ever. I honestly can’t wait to be back in the park and having a blast with Sheffield again. “There are so many great bands on the 2022 lineup. Those I’m really looking forward to catching are Sigrid, Kasabian, The Coral, Orla Gartland and James, and there’s some great Sheffield artists that I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a

while too, the amazing Self Esteem, the return of Little Man Tate and our friends, Reverend and The Makers to name a few. Then to finish off the party, Madness will be sending everyone dancing back to their house…Tramlines 2022 is gonna go off.” Headlining ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ on Friday night is Sam Fender with two Number 1 albums now under his belt. The newly formed but better than ever Kasabian take the lead on Saturday night, while Madness finally get to deliver a long-awaited set following the postponement of Tramlines in 2020 where they were originally due to headline. Other lineup highlights include James who will be bringing the most festivalready tracks from their 39-year long career; the frenetic five piece The Vaccines who’ll be dropping classics such as ‘Norgaard’ and ‘If You Wanna’; Americana/alt-rocker Jade Bird; the Norwegian pop sensation Sigrid; and the Mercury Prize-nominated Sports Team who make a triumphant return to Hillsborough Park following their appearance in 2019 - anyone recall Alex Rice’s crowd surfing in the Leadmill tent? Ever with its finger on the pulse of breaking talent, the Tramlines 2022 lineup shines a light on some of the most exciting new acts around.

These include the gritty indie-folk artist Orla Gartland who dropped her debut album ‘Women on the Internet’ this August; the melodic, indie-pop rising star Pixey who has just released her second EP on the influential Chess Club label; the guardian tipped ‘one to watch’ outfit Coach Party; and guitarist-singer Sam Ryder who shot to fame with his cover versions during the pandemic resulting in TikTok crowning his the most popular UK artist account of 2020. A Tramlines lineup wouldn’t be complete without a solid injection of Sheffield’s finest. For 2022, crowds can expect homegrown sets from Jon McClure’s Reverend and The Makers; Self Esteem (aka Rebecca Taylor formerly of Slow Club); Little Man Tate in their highly anticipated return since their farewell in 2009; and arguably one of most attended performances of the entire Tramlines weekend,The Everly Pregnant Brothers who’ll bring the power house of parody, charm and sing-a-long vibes. Plenty of up and coming local acts have also been revealed including Bedroom High Club, Luxury Goods, Sheafs and August Charles. Bedroom

High Club are a 4-piece new age indie band who have become firm Tramlines favourites since debuting in 2019. Luxury Goods are the new incarnation of LIO and have just announced a Leadmill show in December whilst Sheafs are riding high following their debut EP ‘Vox Pop’ in 2020. August Charles is a fantastic new vocalist from Doncaster who made his Tramlines debut last year as a winner of the ‘Apply to Play’ competition. Tramlines has settled into its new home in Hillsborough Park - this will be the fourth event held there - and this year’s site will have five stages of music, a family-friendly area and a genrespanning line-up of performers including everyone from internationally-acclaimed acts to grass roots talent. 2022’s event - the 13th edition of Sheffield’s biggest party - takes place following an exceptional event in 2021, where the festival took place as part of the Government’s Event Research Programme. It was the largest festival in Western Europe to go ahead since lockdown restrictions were eased and

marked a national celebration of the return to live music. Comedy has become a mainstay of the festival and in 2022 Tramlines has secured some huge names kicking off with Seann Walsh who headlines on Friday. Seann is a multi-award winning performer with a growing list of TV credits including QI, Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity Juice and 8 out of 10 cats. Sean is joined on Friday by Scott Bennett, Michelle Shaughnessy, Alisdair Beckett-King,Vince Atta and host Danny McLoughlin. Saturday headliner Russell Kane is a UK household name due to numerous TV appearances as a guest and as a presenter of his own shows including 2016 travel doc Stupid Man - Smart Phone. Joining Russell on Saturday are Tom Ward, Karen Bayley, Harry Stachini,
Jack Gleadow and host Matt Read. The Sunday showcase is headlined by Jason Manford, well known due his tenure as team leader on 8 out of 10 cats, his numerous presenting roles and his appearances in West End musicals such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Producers and Sweeney Todd. Also appearing on Sunday are Ivan Brackenberry, Lily Philips and host Emmanuel Sonubi who has been hotly tipped by both Jason Manford and Russell Kane. “I’m beyond excited for Tramlines 2022,” added Timm Cleasby. “Our first announcement was ace, now this? You had me at Kelis and Elvana… the return of Lady Leshurr too, just mega. Add to that Jason Manford, Seann Walsh and Lily Philips and I’m gonna need more hours in my weekend.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 45

Comedy Jimmy Carr
Theatre Gypsy 7-24 July / Buxton Opera House buxtonoperahouse.org.uk With bitingly witty lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story) and iconic music by Jule Styne this is the perfect summer treat, directed by Paul Kerryson. Gypsy tells the true, humorous and powerful story of the rise to fame of Gypsy Rose Lee, star of 1930s burlesque and her tempestuous relationship with her ambitious mother Rose. Perhaps the best role in any musical, Rose is a force to be reckoned with as she throws all love interest aside, pushing her daughters June and Louise to stardom.Truly memorable songs include Let Me Entertain You, Everything’s Coming Up Roses,You Gotta Have a Gimmick and Some People.
Mansfield Park 12-21 July / Buxton Opera House buxtonoperahouse.org.uk
Waterperry Opera Festival’s periodperfect production of Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park brings Jane Austen’s world to life with delicious wit and beautiful music. Mansfield Park tells the story of Fanny Price, who is sent at age 10 to live with her rich uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, at his family estate. Jonathan Dove’s operatic treatment of the superb comic novel by Austen was commissioned by Heritage Opera in 2011. Since then it has become a contemporary operatic gem. Directed by Rebecca Meltzer, this production has received widespread critical-acclaim and sold out runs at Waterperry in 2018 and 2019. Accompanied on the piano, 10 singers perform as an ensemble of loveable characters pulling at our heartstrings and making us laugh-out-loud. Packed full of humour and intimate charm, this opera does not shy away from risqué themes of seduction, love and scandal.
Music The Rocket Man 14 July / Winding Wheel chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk The Rocket Man is Jimmy Love, the world’s favourite celebration to a musical icon. No-one else recreates the flamboyant megastar with as much vigour and brilliance so let him take you down the Yellow Brick Road with two hours of glorious Elton hits including Saturday Night’s Alright, Crocodile 46 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Rock, Daniel, I’m Still Standing and Philadelphia Freedom.
The Prodigy 8-9 July / O2 Academy www.o2academysheffield.co.uk The Prodigy start their 2022 in Sheffield for a series of shows that coincides with the 25th anniversary of ‘The Fat Of The Land’, perhaps their best known album that spawned hits such as Firestarter.
2 July / Winding Wheel chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk Terribly Funny 2.0 is the latest tour from the popular stand-up comedian. This brand new show contains jokes about all kinds of terrible things. Terrible things that might have affected you or people you know and love. But they’re just jokes – these are not terrible things. Having political correctness at a comedy show is like having health and safety at a rodeo.
Jason Manford 9 July / Winding Wheel chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk It’s been a busy few years for Jason since his last smash-hit stand up show but fans of his Absolute Radio show will know this nationally acclaimed comedian hasn’t changed a bit. ‘Like Me’ is Jason’s latest comic offering set to hit road, and is sure to be “expert observational comedy” (The Guardian) mixed with “comic gold” (Mail on Sunday).
Mrs Brown’s Boys: D’Live Show 12-13 July / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Billed as the ‘encore show’, Brendan O‘Carroll is bringing Mrs Brown’s Boys back to venues and cities they haven’t played in a while - Sheffield being one of them. Mrs Brown’s Boys’ success has been nothing short of incredible; voted the number one sitcom of the 21st century, its awards include five BAFTAs, five National Television Awards, three TV Choice Awards, four IFTA awards, three TV Times awards as well as RTS, TRIC and National Comedy Awards.

IN BRIEF
Tour of the Peaks
Pink Ribbon Walk More than 300 walkers crossed the finish line at Breast Cancer Now’s Chatsworth House and the Peak District Pink Ribbon Walk, which took place on 4 June. It was the second time the now iconic Pink Ribbon Walk was held at the beauty hotspot. Women and men wearing pink walked 10 or 20 miles to raise money for Breast Cancer Now’s world class breast cancer research and support. Rosie Bunn from Chesterfield, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, appeared on stage before she sounded the klaxon to start the ten-mile walk. Rosie said: “I am so happy and grateful to be here today walking ten miles in this beautiful location. I’m also proud of myself that I have been brave enough to stand up here and speak to you all! “It’s almost seven years since my diagnosis and I am feeling healthy and happy. Huge thanks to Breast Cancer Now for providing support for today and hope for the future, to people like me and all the women and men I’ve met along the way. Because of this, I’m keen to raise awareness and the money raised at Chatsworth House will help Breast Cancer Now continue its vital work for anyone affected by the disease.” Claire Pulford, Associate Director, Community and Events at Breast Cancer Now, said: “We’re so delighted to have once again welcomed our fantastic supporters back to the iconic Chatsworth House Pink Ribbon Walk and we would like to thank everyone who took part helping to raise more than £48,000 so far, for people affected by breast cancer- with donations still coming in. “It’s always an incredibly emotional day and, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced Breast Cancer Now to cancel events for the last two years, seeing everyone walking together for a joint cause felt even more special. People took part for so many reasons – we had people walking who are currently having breast cancer treatment, people who’ve had treatment, and friends and family of people affected by the disease. “We’re so thankful to everyone who signed up to take part in a Pink Ribbon Walk and fundraise for Breast Cancer Now. Every year in the UK 55,000 women and 370 men are diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly these numbers are rising. These vital funds are helping us to ensure we’re here for anyone affected by breast cancer, funding world-class research and providing support to anyone affected by this devastating disease.” Challenge yourself to a Pink Ribbon Walk and help fund world-class research and support. A partner at Dronfieldbased financial planners, Belmayne, has added another £1,000 to the firm’s fundraising total after completing a gruelling 112-mile bike ride. Ben Smalley and three of his friends tackled the Tour of the Peaks in support of the Belmayne Foundation, raising £1,010 for four local charities. The money will be added to the funds raised by the Belmayne Foundation this year, which are already in excess of £13,000 and split equally between the firm’s four chosen charities. They are: Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team, Disability Awareness with Sport, Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and Sight Support Derbyshire. It took Ben and his friends 11 hours to complete the Tour of the Peaks, having scaled more than 10,000 feet of ascent. The challenge started and finished at Bakewell Showground and encompassed the notorious Derbyshire peaks of Holme Moss, Winant’s Pass and The Cat and Fiddle. Ben said: “The Tour of the Peaks is billed as one of the toughest cycling challenges around and it certainly lived up to the hype! My friends and I had a great day, despite the hills and it was a pleasure to ride such a scenic route. I would like to thank everyone who sponsored us and contributed to Belmayne’s fundraising total. Their generosity will make a big difference to the small charities we are supporting.”
Night Strider The St Luke’s Hospice 50th anniversary celebrations will reach their climax with Night Strider 2022. Night Strider – sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that this year aims to raise more than £100,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. The 2019 challenge - the last before the Covid 19 pandemic put Night Strider on hold for two years - saw more than 1,000 fully illuminated St Luke’s supporters take to the streets as darkness fell on the city on an October evening. Now booking is open and already entries are coming in for Night Strider 2022, which makes its return on 8 October 8 and promises to be the biggest and best Night Strider yet! Starting out from Sheffield’s Peace Gardens, the walk takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall and Abbeydale before heading back to the city centre finish line. With no running involved, there’s plenty of time to take in the city’s best known views by moonlight as walkers embark on their twilight challenge. Either a full half marathon distance or a shorter 10k route, Night Strider is open to everybody over the age of ten though participants aged ten to 17 must be registered and accompanied by another participant aged 18 or over - and is suitable for all ages and abilities. PD Warrior Live Brave with Parkinsons
Hallamshire Physiotherapy have introduced online PD Warrior sessions
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THIS UNIQUE PROGRAMME, DELIVERED BY HALLAMSHIRE PHYSIOTHERAPY. D Warrior is a unique programme of exercise to help people newly diagnosed with Parkinsons. It originated in Australia and was developed to help people to slow down the progression of their disease. Parkinsons is a progressive neurological disorder that affects approximately 145,000 people in the UK.The main symptoms are tremor, rigidity, and slowing movements. Symptoms and the speed at which the condition develops will differ from person to person and many people will had had symptoms for years before diagnosis. There is currently no cure for Parkinsons and treatment is through medication, physiotherapy and activity. The PD Warrior programme is an advanced exercise programme that incorporates both physical and cognitive activity for people in the early stages of Parkinsons. At its heart, PD Warrior is an intensive circuit programme designed to fight the symptoms. PD Warrior is supported by a growing body of evidence that shows that intensive, high effort, complex exercise has the potential to slow the progression of your symptoms by using neuroplasticity - your brain’s natural ability to re-organise its pathways and connections, much like rewiring. By rewiring the brain you can help people to move more freely with less conscious thought. The key to achieving this rewiring includes being consistent and using the right exercise prescription. It is important not to wait for symptoms to impact upon daily life before taking up the correct type of exercise. So why is PD Warrior different from other forms of exercise? PD Warrior uses seven core principles: • High Effort - working hard • Power - big powerful movements
P
• Frequency - exercise must be done daily • Specificity - specific to the individual • Meaning - relate to activities you find challenging • Complexity - dual and multi tasking • Fun!
What happens at Hallamshire Physiotherapy? An assessment with one of our PD Warrior instructors is carried out to ensure suitability for the programme and also to obtain baseline measures on areas such as gait, balance and motor skills. Following the assessment one to one sessions are required to educate and coach people in the exercises and the principles. Then comes the ten-week challenge. This is a circuit class once per week held at our exercise facility at 863 Ecclesall Road or in our Chesterfield base. At the completion of the ten-week challenge there will be a review assessment to compare the baseline measures. The specific exercise plan needs
adjusting just like medication to ensure it is giving people the best opportunities. Over the pandemic we transferred our PD Warrior sessions to online delivery and we still run on line classes every week even though in person groups have returned. This enables people who are not able to attend in person or who do not live locally to enjoy and benefit from the PD Warrior sessions. If you have been newly diagnosed please don’t delay and begin Living Brave with Parkinsons. If you want to find out more information please contact Karen Hodgson at Hallamshire Physiotherapy 0114 267 1223 or email at info@hallamshirephysiotherapy.com

MOTORING
IF YOU LIKE YOUR CARS BIG, TALL AND IMPOSING, YOU’LL LOVE THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
All in the look The all-new Mazda CX-60 flagship SUV is launched with Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid technology powertrain and visually the new SUV reflects the latest enhancement of Kodo design - a design philosophy that debuted a decade ago with the launch of the first-generation Mazda CX-5, which was the first production car to feature Kodo design. Having entered phase two with the Mazda3 in 2019, the launch of Mazda’s very latest SUV sees Mazda’s designers take on the challenge of creating a design that would instantly reflect the advancement of the ‘Kodo-Soul of Motion’ design philosophy. Conceived under the design concept ‘Noble Toughness’, the imposing strength of the Mazda CX-60’s beautiful and dynamic styling conveys the intelligence and elegance of the latest developments in Kodo design - the Japanese concept of Ma, which is the calm and dignified beauty of empty space - woven into the toughness of the striking front-engine, rear-wheel drive SUV architecture. The CX-60’s deeply sculpted face, long nose and short rear silhouette creates a powerful and dynamic framework and an imposing SUV-like presence in a form with the simple beauty and elegance that Kodo design has become famed for.
Sporting pedigree The third generation of Land Rover’s luxury performance SUV – the Range Rover Sport – is the most desirable, technologically advanced and capable yet, mixing an imposing road presence with instinctive driving responses using the most advanced combination of chassis technologies ever fitted to a Land Rover. New Range Rover Sport is based on Land Rover’s advanced, flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA-Flex), which provides the perfect foundations for its superior dynamics and peerless refinement. Its line-up of powerful and efficient powertrains includes two six-cylinder extended range Electric Hybrid plug-ins, which provide a pure-electric driving range of up to 70 miles (113km) and CO2 emissions as low as 18g/km. The new 530PS V8 Twin Turbo provides sports car performance, with 0-60mph in as little as 4.3 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds) with Dynamic Launch engaged. Customers can also choose from powerful and efficient mild hybrid petrol and diesel Ingenium engines.
Longing for the new Bentley
XM-plary new addition
Bentley is bringing a new focus on wellness to its model range with the launch of the Bentayga Extended Wheelbase – a new grand touring SUV that builds on the strengths of the Bentayga to become a new luxury flagship, extending the latest product range to five models. So much more than just a stretch, the 180mm longer Bentayga Extended Wheelbase is the result of a nine-figure investment by Bentley to create a new model that provides the best rear cabin experience since a Mulsanne, whilst retaining the Bentley hallmarks of effortless performance, exquisite handcraftsmanship and endless personalisation. The new Bentley features Airline Seat specification, the most advanced seat ever fitted to a car, with 22-ways of adjustment and world-firsts in a new auto climate sensing system and postural adjustment technology. There will be three seating configurations, including an all-new 4+1 layout alongside four- and five-seat versions.
The first BMW M highperformance car with electrified drive has completed its final tuning process and the integrated application of the 480 kW/650hp M hybrid drive system and the model-specific M suspension technology paves the way for an outstandingly dynamic driving experience. For their test drives on public roads, the development and test engineers established an exceptionally demanding and varied route profile. The intelligently controlled interaction of the new eight-cylinder engine and the particularly powerful electric motor could thus be tested and refined in detail under a wide range of conditions: from intermediate sprints on the motorway to winding country roads and stop-and-go traffic in the city. Steep mountain passages and narrow serpentines offer the ideal terrain to demonstrate the driving dynamics potential of the M xDrive system, including the electronically controlled differential lock in the rear axle transmission.
