RAINBOW FORGE PRIMARY ACADEMY ARE SINGING FOR JOY A local primary school received exciting news recently when their choir were invited to perform in the Music for Youth’s National Festival. Rainbow Forge Primary Academy has a popular junior choir, whose members range from ages 7-11. They have performed in a number of venues and events around Sheffield, including at Sheffield Cathedral as part of Breast Cancer Care’s carol concerts, with The City of Sheffield Teachers’ Choir at their Christmas performances, and in various Christmas concerts around the city. In January the choir were selected to perform as part of one of Music for Youth’s 50 Regional Festivals, organised locally by
Sheffield Music Hub. The choir received some amazing feedback from their performance, with comments like “great energy and an exciting sound,” “very good tuning for an unaccompanied primary choir” and “this is a wonderful primary school choir with many musical strengths.” Darcey, aged ten, said: “We are all looking forward to going to Birmingham as we have all worked so hard. “We never expected to get this far, we just wanted some feedback on our singing and now look where we’ve got! One good thing about being in our choir is you always have lots of friends around you. We are proud to be a team.”
Following on from this feedback, the choir were invited to perform at the National Festival in Birmingham, just one of 24 choirs selected from the 40,000 young musicians who took part in the regional festivals. They will be singing in Birmingham Symphony Hall on 4 July. Headteacher, Jane Loader said: “It is wonderful to see how confident our children have become, thanks to the experiences and training that our music curriculum and choir programme give our pupils. “Our choir welcomes everyone, and they have enjoyed preparing for this performance and are excited to sing for a larger audience.”
Eddie the Eagle flies back for Crystal Peaks 30th birthday celebrations Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards will be flying back into Crystal Peaks as the award-winning Sheffield shopping mall celebrates its 30th anniversary. Eddie the Eagle is the British skier who in 1988 became the first competitor since 1928 to represent Great Britain in ski jumping, becoming a much-loved national hero following his appearance at the Calgary Winter Olympics of that year. It was at the height of his fame that he was invited to cut the ribbon at Crystal Peaks, Sheffield’s then new out of town shopping centre. 8 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk
And now he’ll be back, leading the Crystal Peaks 30th anniversary celebrations on 16 June and unveiling a specially commissioned birthday work of art – created by Crystal Peaks shoppers. Working alongside the experts from Sheffield’s Fired Arts Craft Cafe, shoppers and visitors young and old are being invited to create images on special ceramic tiles that will then be assembled into a major 30th anniversary mural that will go on public display in the centre as the focal point of the celebrations.

FROM DOGS AND CATS TO BUNNIES AND BIRDS, GET THEM ALL MICROCHIPPED. hether you have a cat, dog or rabbit, microchipping is an essential part of looking after your pet, and throughout June many vet practices across the UK will be raising awareness about microchips, in celebration of National Microchipping Month. National Microchipping Month is sponsored by Petlog, the UK’s largest lost and found database for microchipped pets, and is a campaign that encourages and promotes microchipping as the preferred method of permanent identification. You may be wondering, what is a microchip? Why does my pet need one? Well, as an animal owner you have a legal requirement to ensure your pet can be identified should they go missing. What’s more, laws changed in April 2016 to declare that all dogs in the UK must be microchipped. Here senior vet Shula Berg, who has worked for the Springfield Veterinary Group for the last seven years, explains why microchipping your pet is an important part of being a responsible owner. “Microchipping is so important, as it is the only guaranteed method of identifying who an animal belongs to. “A common misconception is that microchips allow animals to be tracked, but this isn’t the case. Instead, each microchip has a unique 15 digit number, which is displayed when the chip is scanned. When this number is entered into an online database, the owners’ details are quickly retrieved. “Microchipping allows us to reunite lost or

stolen animals with their owners - this is usually cats and dogs, but rabbits, birds and even tortoises can all be microchipped. “If a stray animal is brought into the vets, we always scan for a microchip. For this reason, it’s enormously important to make sure your pets’ microchip details are correct (they can easily be updated online or over the phone). “Lost animals are not the only benefit of microchips, however. As a vet, I often have to treat injured animals, brought in by members of the public, especially as cats tend to wander quite far from home. If a pet isn’t
microchipped, it can make things really difficult as we can’t wait indefinitely for an owner to come forward, and sometimes have to make critical decisions about treatment. “Unfortunately, some animals don’t survive, especially those hit by cars. We often have deceased cats brought in, but always scan them for a microchip in the hope we can at least tell their owner what happened. “Since April 2016, it is a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped in the UK. This must be performed before puppies are sold, and the chip is initially registered to the breeder. Breeders can then update the microchip with the puppy’s new owners’ details free of charge. We are hoping that, with time, this will help to reduce the number of “backyard breeders” and puppy farms, by making breeders more accountable. “Microchipping is quick, simple and causes only mild discomfort (or none if performed under anaesthetic such as during neutering). “Springfield offer microchipping for only £9.99 at all eight of our branches - please call the number below or visit www.springfieldvetgroup.co.uk to book an appointment.” Springfield Veterinary Group has eight branches across Sheffield, including the Rotherham branch which is open 24 hours a day for emergencies. A pearl of an anniversary THORNBERRY ANIMAL SANCTUARY CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF RESCUE AND REHABILITATION. hornberry Animal Sanctuary (TAS) is celebrating 30 years of rescuing and rehoming neglected and abandoned animals, from dogs, cats and rabbits to horses, ponies, pigs, sheep, goats and a donkey, Stevie. Some stories are horrifying: take Aiyana for instance, she was one of three horses found in an abandoned trailer, kicking through the rotting floor in a frantic bid to escape. It took three days for a passerby to realise their plight and Aiyana is with TAS recovering, her forgiving nature shining through, despite her leg wounds and trauma.

Babe the blind sheep had been kept locked in a tiny shed for his own ‘safety’, until he arrived at TAS and found his way contentedly round one of the grassy paddocks – his disability managed, not punished. Many of the dogs who arrive at TAS have behavioural issues, caused by poor treatment, and while TAS understand that not all owners are intentionally cruel, animals can suffer just as much from ignorance, lack of time, money or interest. A kennel environment is never as good as a knowledgeable, loving family, but top quality makes a massive difference, and so TAS are working to replace the out-dated and tired kennels, with new ones suitable for the next 30 years. Happy dogs are easier to rehome, with the best chance of a good future, and so the chosen kennels are highly recommended
by the ADCH (Association of Dogs and Cats Homes) and have been designed to significantly reduce stress levels. Tell us about The Old Rectory
The Old Rectory is an independent charity based in the heart of Handsworth, located behind St Mary’s church in a fantastic old stone-built Georgian house. We’re essentially a community centre, hosting everything from mums and toddler groups and preschool singing classes to karate, yoga, pensioner’s lunch clubs and tea dances. There are over 40 community groups that use the building weekly and our website offers a full listing, for anyone interested in getting out and about, making friends or learning new hobbies. We also host groups run by other social enterprises, tackling issues like diabetes, alcoholism or weight loss, and often offer free courses for those who need the help most. Alongside that, we’re a busy wedding and party venue - the old building provides the
ideal backdrop for photos and the gardens offer a wonderful private space for drinks receptions and for children to play. We host everything from birthday parties and christenings to anniversaries and retirement functions, as well as the weddings themselves, as you can hold the ceremony inside the Old Rectory. We use all the profits generated from weddings and parties to put on community fun days over all the bank holidays, the big fireworks display in November, as well as a music festival in August, ensuring a jampacked calendar of events for our local residents, to help build community cohesion. What lead you to The Old Rectory?
I had previously worked in retail, running my own shop, and took time out to look after my second son, so when returning to work I wanted a new challenge - this was it. What is a typical working day like for you?
No two days are the same. We’re a small team, so although I am the centre manager, there’s also plenty of stacking chairs, washing up and serving drinks to be done.

I particularly enjoy meeting couples and helping plan their special day, and I’m often here at weekends and evenings, too, letting community groups in and out of the building or running parties, so 5am starts for the car boot are often a challenge. But then the magical days like Santa’s workshop or helping set off the fireworks make it manageable, especially when I see the pleasure it brings to the local children.
What is the toughest part of your job?
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Sometimes it is sad, because within groups like the pensioners lunch club – where we are feeding the very elderly and lonely – dementia can set in and member may exceed our care abilities. It is tough when we can no longer take in a member who may have been coming to us for years or who has made good friends, but sometimes it is imperative that we refer people to the next level of care.
I would still like to be working within the community or third sector, but right now there are plenty of challenges ahead within this role.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I’m particularly proud of the Handsworth music festival and this year will be our sixth year. It’s an amazing family day and it’s great to host an event like that in the heart of the community. I’m also enjoying our current program of building renovations - we’ve recently added large garden doors to the function rooms and are looking to build a new bar area next year. It’s great to think that the changes we’re making now will improve the flexibility of the building and ensure it’s here long after we’re gone.
I have three boys, so a lot of my spare time is spent watching the football matches they play in, and those they don’t. I also have a dog, who gets me out on long walks, and I’m very fond of my garden and growing produce, as well as keeping chickens.
What projects are you working on at the moment?
We’re currently looking for a community engagement officer to join our team, and are hoping to put on more courses, classes, holiday activities and counselling sessions, using the profits generated from weddings. So as that side of the charity grows, we need another staff member to organise everything. I’m currently working on job specs and reading through applications, which is really exciting.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The people. I work with a great team and we all put in long hours, but share a sense of humour that keeps us smiling. What advice would you give to anyone thinking of a similar career?
Don’t be afraid to try new things. Not everything we put on is a success, but it’s about having a go, seeing what captures the community’s imagination and being prepared to evolve or change. We try to reinvent our affairs each year, to keep things fresh and interesting, and as for the wedding side of the business, it’s all about the planning and detail, so be organised.

The rise of silent movies meant that brows in the '20s took a theatrical downturn. Stars shaved their eyebrows and drew them back in thinly with paint, so they'd better express emotion on camera, as seen on Clara Bow.
Thick eyebrows with thinner ends were very trendy at this time - women favoured a more natural look by removing only a few hairs to create an arch shape. Ungroomed ‘caterpillar’ brows were also all the rage, and a heavy, almost dishevelled look was desirable and emulated with the help of brow pencils and powders.
1940s During World War II wearing makeup was seen as a way to remain ‘feminine’ while taking on traditionally masculine roles. By 1946, the war was over, but eyebrows remained prominent. Taking a cue from the likes of Joan Crawford, eyebrows were drawn in bigger, bolder and more dramatically than ever before and were often plucked so that the arch was higher and placed right in the centre.
1990s The extremely thin 1920s trend resurfaced again and arched eyebrows were usually not well shaped and required the most maintenance, which inevitably led to over-plucking and over-waxing.
2000s Playing on the brows of the '90s, the following decade saw even thinner, barely-there shapes, with stars like Drew Barrymore and Pamela Anderson rocking teeny-tiny arches that often resulted in a perpetually shocked-looking expression.
The brow of today 1950s Stars like Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandrige provided the '50s brow ideal: short, full, heavily arched and wide-set. We live in the era of the selfie, and therefore our eyebrows must be camera-ready at all times. The bold brow is back, thanks in large to model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne and what many are hailing "the power brow", and even men spend a lot of time and money getting their arches right. This project was two years in the making and innovated by using standard
hospital materials in anew way. The Children’s Hospital Charity director, David Vernon-Edwards said: “We are so thankful to the many generous supporters that have helped us to raise this amount of money for the region’s biggest charitably supported healthcare project. FORGET THE PAIN OF THE PLANE, TRAVEL TO NEW YORK IN STYLE ONBOARD THE CUNARD QUEEN MARY II. BY CARMEL STEWART. sometimes think it would be easier if we were all required to wear pyjamas when travelling by air. That way we would have less hassle at airports having to take off coats, jackets, jumpers, shoes and belts while sorting out bags, laptops, phones, keys, cash, liquids and, in some cases, pushchairs, toddlers and nappy bags. It’s for our security, I hear you say, and so it is, but that doesn’t make it any easier so when the invitation arrived to spend Christmas in New York, I hesitated. Airports at Christmas? Hmm. But I had the time and was saving on hotels, so it seemed churlish to refuse. Keen to avoid the easy-peasy, cheap and squeezy airlines, I looked at an alternative means of transport and came up with a Cunard non-stop crossing on the Queen Mary II. Not to be confused with a cruise, for me this was a strictly one-stop journey from Southampton to New York, which is far less stressful than you might imagine. First off, there is a train directly from Sheffield to Southampton. Off the train, into a taxi; out of the taxi into the departure lounge; bags whisked away almost before the taxi had come to a halt. Slight moment of panic – were they so efficiently dispatched by a port employee or by an opportunist thief? Momentary hesitation and then relax. I’m on holiday. I have my passport, my ticket, my bank card and my Kindle, what else do I need?

Entry to the departure lounge was equally straightforward. Walk through the doors and you’ll be presented with a coloured card, up the escalator to the spacious waiting area with free magazines and newspapers, plus coffee, tea and snacks at not too exorbitant prices. Then it is merely a question of waiting for your colour to be called. So long as you have your passport, a printed copy of your ticket and a printout of your ESTA (US Visa), check-in is very simple and hassle free. There is the inevitable security screening but it’ll take all your ‘Merry Christmas’ bags without a murmur – Henderson’s Relish, hot sauce selection, mince pies and all. A short stroll later and you arrive on board what can only be described as a floating luxury hotel. The setting is truly spectacular with a magnificent central staircase, endless corridors, wonderful dining rooms, dance hall, theatre, planetarium and swimming pools. There is even a kennels staffed by qualified professionals, so your pets can also travel in style. Excellent food is available in multiple locations; the Queen’s Grill, the Princess Grill, the Britannia Club, King’s Court and the Golden Lion pub among them. There are multiple activities too. Joining in is optional. Some entered everything with huge enthusiasm, others were of the bah

humbug variety and kept clear. You can dress up for dinner or not – although eating after 6pm requires smart/casual at the very least. Some took the plunge with long frocks, bow-ties and cummerbunds, others skated very close to the edge with black jeans and Tshirts. I was not keen on joining the choir, learning to paint, Trivia tournaments or ballroom dancing but I did learn to play backgammon, thanks to Terry who was not an employee but an enthusiast, eager to spread the word. If I have a point of criticism it has to be for the internet access which was truly dreadful. Not that that was anyone on board’s fault. It is what it is but the fact that Cunard charges were so high was a bone of contention among all trying to log on – or indeed log off. I paid more than £80 for my 240-minute package. It regularly took me 20 minutes to access my emails, five minutes to read them and a further 20 minutes to log off – all

included in the paid for time. I twice had to go to reception and ask them to log me off as my laptop was stuck fast. So, Cunard, why not make it FREE? It won’t change the doziness of it all but it will stop people complaining. One thing about which there was no complaint was our guest speaker – Sir Ranulph Fiennes – an excellent entertaining speaker and a thoroughly pleasant gent into the bargain.
THE DETAILS: A transatlantic Christmas crossing on the QMII costs from £889 per person. That fare includes the crossing, food and soft drinks in certain areas. It also included the flight home but not any alcohol. Fine dining requires an upgraded cabin. Normally, I would advise travellers to book the best they can afford but, if New York is your final destination, select the cheapest you can live with for a week. You’ll have access to all the shows and entertainment. The food in King’s Court is wonderful and plentiful. Service is help yourself – and people did, believe you me – but it’s relaxed and comfortable. Afterwards you can stroll across to the Carinthia Lounge for coffee. If you are feeling really anti-social, room service is available free of charge. There are plenty of areas to sit and relax during the journey. A balcony suite will give you the same view of the Atlantic mile after
mile but that’s about it. If you decide to go on to the Caribbean, more expensive accommodation is worth considering. On boarding you will be required to register your bank card. Any expenses incurred will then be deducted. There are many upmarket shops on board as well as places for fancy coffees and cocktails, spa treatments and hair styling – all of which will be added to the final tally. If you travel with the family a check on expenditure every couple of days will save palpitations at the end of the voyage. Note too, that, unless you ask to have it removed, you will automatically be charged tips at between $11.50 and $13.50 per person per day, depending on accommodation. OFTEN OVERLOOKED, PHOEBE SEYMOUR LOOKS AT WHY CIDER IS THE PERFECT PINT. n recent years, there’s been something of a real ale and gin revival, but another classic drink that often gets overlooked is cider. Perhaps we simply take it for granted that it will be on tap at every bar we stumble into, but with UK supermarkets such as Tesco increasing their selection of ciders by 60 per cent since 2001 to keep up with demand, we are certainly a nation with a huge thirst for the stuff. Nowadays, it’s common to see every fruit flavour of cider under the sun (quite literally) poured over ice to create the perfect summer pint. So let’s raise a glass as we celebrate the past, the present, and the glorious future of this unsung beverage.

SWEET BEGINNINGS In The Drunken Botanist (Algonquin Books, 2013), which explores the botanical history of some of the world’s greatest spirits, Amy Stewart cites the Greeks and the Romans as the first people to master the art of cider making. “When Romans invaded England around 55 BC, they found that cider was already being enjoyed by the locals there,” says Amy. “By that time, apple trees had long ago migrated from forests around Kazakhstan and were well established across Europe and Asia. “It was in southern England, France, and Spain that the technique of fermenting – and later distilling – the fruit was perfected. Evidence of this ancient art can be found in the European countryside today, where large circular apple grinding stones used to crush the fruit are still half buried in the fields.” She goes on to explain that there was often a “mishmash of novel and never-before-seen apples” in these orchards, which the farmers considered not sweet enough to eat. Even drinking the juice of apples was thought to be too sour for palates at that time. An archaeological dig in Gloucester in
2002 suggests that crab apples were once commonly pressed into an alcohol sweetened with honey. With the invasion of 1066, the natural sugar in Norman apples displaced the need for a sweetening agent and so began the love affair between the English and their apples and cider. Increased planting of apple trees began as soon as William of Normandy introduced his feudal system and has continued until now, nearly a thousand years on. The only way to reproduce a popular variety of apple was to graft it onto the rootstock of another tree, a technique that had been used on and off since 50 BC. Apple farmers started making clones of these varieties, and the popular ones eventually acquired names. “In the late 1500s, there were at least 65 named apples in Normandy,” confirms Amy. “For centuries, many of the best apples for cider-making have come from this region, all chosen for their productivity as well as their balance of acidity, tannin, aromatics, and sweetness.”
The present day phenomenon Recent years have seen a significant increase in cider sales in the UK. Today, the UK drinks the most cider in the world and is the major producer of cider in the EU. The beverage has enjoyed a renaissance in the 21st century with a greater diversity of producers, brands and consumers than ever before. The National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) estimates a minimum of 480 active cider makers in the UK. As of 2008, UK cider production comprises 61.9 per cent of cider produced in the EU. UK cider is mostly associated with the West Country, the West Midlands, and portions of the Home Counties and East Anglia, more specifically places like Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Kent, Suffolk, Norfolk and more recently Buckinghamshire and Cheshire; outside England it is also produced in Wales and Northern Ireland.

Cider is commonly available in sweet, medium and dry varieties, and range from
the cheaper white variety that tend to come in two-litre bottles at your local offlicence, to the mixed fruit variety presented in classier tall glass bottles served over ice in bars and pubs all over the country.
