Our Dreams really did come true Last year saw Hotel Van Dyk launch its largest ever Wedding Promotion by giving away a complete Dream wedding package, valued at £3,995. The lucky winners, Victoria and Peter from Worksop were drawn from the hat, the local couple who had already booked their Wedding at Hotel Van Dyk were amazed that not only had they been entered for the competition, because they had already booked their Wedding ...but now they had won. They were notified of the outcome and were both over the moon. Victoria said “This really is a ‘dream’ come true, we are really delighted with our choice of Hotel Van Dyk as our Wedding venue and when we won the competition our dreams became reality.” Peter commented “It’s the best venue in the area, the quality of the hotel, its grounds and rooms are amazing, the wedding co-ordinators are first class, people that we could trust to deliver us a truly magical day...thanks to everyone at Hotel Van Dyk...we were so happy to hold our wedding there”. The Wedding Team at the hotel were equally as thrilled, “It gave us an opportunity to speak to over 200 Brides and Grooms and share their expectations, the lucky couple were a delight, we really enjoyed making sure they had a perfect day”.

PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN
Divorce advice from Gary Crothers, family law solicitor at Wosskow Brown.
I
t is never easy when a marriage breaks down. No matter how amicable the circumstances, it is an emotional situation that requires the very best professionals to guide you through the legal maze. At Wosskow Brown, we pride ourselves on our friendly, down-to-earth approach that makes our clients feel comfortable from the moment they step through the door. Our free initial advice tells you exactly what you need to do, where you stand, and what the grounds are for divorce and if you have them. These appointments often make clients understand that divorce is neither as complicated nor as costly as they may think. Our fixed fees for straightforward divorce ensure the costs won’t run away with you and payments can be made in instalments. It can also be sorted much sooner than many people realise. If the divorce is uncomplicated and the proceedings are dealt with promptly by both parties, the process can be completed in as little as three months. Wosskow Brown also have experience dealing with more complex cases and I have recently obtained the Higher Right of Audience, which enables me to conduct trials in the higher civil courts. The most important advice regarding divorce is not to leave it too long. If you are certain that the separation from your spouse is permanent, begin the process straight away. This is particularly important when finances are involved as it will avoid looking back through months or even years of bank statements to decide
who has spent – and who is therefore owed – what. If large financial assets – such as property – are involved, it is always better to have what is known as a ‘clean break settlement’, which draws a financial line under the marriage. This protects you against your former partner making a claim on any of your future finances. If you have any queries or are at all unsure about divorce, why not book an appointment for our free advice and let us put your mind at rest? PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE
BELOW: SWC offer an expert stained glass service
CONTINUING SUCCESS When a local business achieves 40 years of continuous trading it is a milestone worth celebrating... so let’s pop a few corks and say ‘cheers’ as we toast the continuing success story that is Sheffield Window Centre.
I
t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 40 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as
IMAGEmagazine 16
the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top A family affair... Lbrand REHAU – a market leader in R: Ian, Sam, Amy polymer extrusion – for all their and Ian Hunter installations. Their multi-chambered profile www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

“Whether it be price, product, or service – Sheffield Window Centre can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester.” SWC can now provide conservatories, which are suitable for year-round use
uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so Joe Hunter in many lesser brands. the factory And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be. Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain colours including rosewood and oak. You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard doubleglazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argon-filled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit anti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows – so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
less – as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multi-point locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which are suitable for year-round use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and selfcleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. BE BEAUTIFUL It’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. Hannah Pearson has some top tips to get your started.
A
fter a long and chilly winter where snow fell as far as February, it’s hard to believe that spring is now just around the corner. The mornings are brighter, the days are longer and we’re starting to think about shaking off our woolly layers and getting back outside. But with this flurry of cheerful activity comes the harsh reality that we may have neglected our homes during those chilly months – which becomes apparent when we see our home in the natural sunlight. A layer of dust seems to have accumulated on every surface, the windows and roof have suffered from the lashings of rain, the garden path is overgrown with weeds – and how long has that stain been on the carpet? It looks vaguely like a mince pie. The time has come to spring clean! No one looks forward to the annual deep clean, but when the flowers start blooming you know it’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love your house can be beautiful again and have that fresh spring look. Follow these simple steps for a happier home.
IMAGEmagazine 20
Check the roof With heavy rain, chilly snow and stormy winds up and down the country, your roof will have suffered a beating this winter. As spring approaches, it is essential to check that no serious damage has been done. This can be done yourself or, if the thought of climbing onto the roof leaves you feeling queasy, you can hire a professional roofer instead. If any tiles have been displaced, make sure you get them fixed now – you’ll be glad you did when the April showers arrive.
Clear drains and gutters The onslaught of rain we saw this winter will have washed fallen leaves straight into your gutters. If left untreated, clogged up drain pipes and guttering can cause flooding, so make sure you give them a thorough clearing out. Also, check for any cracks or wear and tear that might need fixing.

Check windows Winter storms can easily cause damage to your window insulation. Make sure you check for cracks and make repairs if necessary. Now is the perfect time to clean your windows too. Polish them inside and out so you can make the most of when the sun starts shining.
Tidy up exterior Create a fantastic first impression at the impending summer parties by sprucing up the front of your home. Remove any weeds that may have grown across your path, give your front door a good clean, change outdoor light bulbs, tighten wobbly gates or railings and add some plant pots, hanging baskets or a new welcome mat to the entrance of your home.
Painting and wood-staining Torrential rain can cause layers of paint to slowly fade away, so now is the time to make everything look brand new by giving your outdoor surfaces a lick of paint. Think about staining wood surfaces too. Fences, gazebos, tables, chairs – they will all benefit from a new coating ready for the summer.
Flowers Spring is all about adding a splash of colour back into our lives – and what better way to spruce up our home and garden? It may still be a little chilly, but now is the time to get planting so that your garden will be a stunning array of springtime colour. Indoor plants and vases of fresh flowers will bring the natural beauty indoors.
De-clutter
Go green
After months of children and pets playing indoors, your house is probably in serious need of clearing out. It’s impossible to thoroughly clean surfaces and cupboards with a winter’s worth of clutter on top of them, so it’s time to be brutal – either find a suitable place for it, or throw it away. Make some extra money by selling unwanted items online, host a car boot sale or donate to your local charity shop.
It’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon and start making your home as eco-friendly as possible. Energy-saving features make houses cheaper to run and are a good investment financially, socially and environmentally. Look out for solar powered products, energy-saving light bulbs, home energy monitors that track your usage, eco-kettles, energy-saving toasters and standby gadgets to save energy and cash.
Clean ceiling fans If you have a ceiling fan, it probably won’t have been used over the winter months. If you don’t remember to clear away the thick layer of dust that will have settled on the blades you will get an unpleasant surprise when you turn them on. Give them a good scrub to avoid circulating dust throughout your home.
Garden With the coming of spring, thoughts turn to our gardens. But if the prospect of landscaping fills you with fear, keep it simple. See your garden in a whole new light by rearranging your plants or purchasing some new garden furniture or accessories. Pressurewash your decking or patio and bring outdoor furniture out of storage for a good clean. Although we’re still a few months away, there’s no harm in giving the barbecue a good scrub before the summer party season begins.

Clean upholstery and update furnishings Fire up the vacuum and get rid of all the dust that will have accumulated on your sofas and chairs. If you gave your home a seasonal makeover at the beginning of winter, now is the time to pack away the throws and thick curtains and replace them with light furnishings and colourful accessories. Wash your pillows, duvets and curtains and get someone to help you flip your mattress.

PROMOTIONIAN VAN HOOF
Years of experience mean that Ian Van Hoof and his team can offer you the very best care for your precious eyesight.
W
e all take our eyesight for granted sometimes and it can be too easy to forget to book a check-up. The best way to ensure continued care for your eyes is to have regular consultations with a trusted optician who has years of experience. Whether you’re due an eye test, need a new pair of specs or require contact lenses – Ian Van Hoof is here to help. This friendly independent opticians has been caring for the people of Sheffield for years. The practice opened in Mosborough in 1985, followed in 1989 by the Swallownest branch. The two practices are now combined at the Swallownest premises, which can be found on the ground floor with easy parking. The practice is run by Ian Van Hoof and his experienced and dedicated team of staff – most of whom have been with him for over 25 years. Ian carries out all the sight tests and is assisted by Dispensing Optician Jean Bailey and receptionists Ann, Gill and Karen.
Ian has a vast amount of experience and qualified from UMIST (now part of the University of Manchester) in 1981. He worked in private practices and hospital eye departments, before moving to Sheffield to work as a locum optician and then set up his own practice. The quality of patient care at Ian Van Hoof is second to none, with many benefiting from Ian’s expertise for nearly 30 years and becoming old friends. As he is the only optician on site, Ian sees his patients year after year, which allows him to monitor any problems and provide individual care and advice. The practice provides all the usual services such as sight testing and spectacle supply, minor repairs and adjustments on site and all types of contact lenses and aftercare. There is a wide range of frames available at reasonable prices as well as designer labels like Lacoste, Murano, William Morris, Oliver Goldsmith, Elle and Jaguar. As an independent practice, spectacle frames can be sourced from almost any manufacturer so you can often find something a little bit different at Ian Van Hoof. And all frames can be fitted with polycarbonate lenses which are thinner, lighter and virtually unbreakable. The practice has a workshop onsite where spectacles can be glazed and urgent prescriptions can often be made while you wait. Ian also performs home visits for housebound patients on a Wednesday morning and as always, their Sunspec offer of half-price sunglasses when you buy a normal pair of glasses is available. PROMOTIONACCLAIMED FAMILY LAW
Highly regarded Sheffield family solicitor Michelle Cooper has launched her own firm and client satisfaction is firmly at the top of the agenda.
G
oing through a divorce or relationship breakdown is one of the most stressful things a person can endure. As well as dealing with the emotional upheaval, there are a host of practical arrangements to consider, which can be difficult at such an upsetting time. Getting the right advice and support can make a huge difference and help you to feel in control of the situation. A solicitor specialising in family law should be your first port of call. Michelle Cooper is one of the region’s most highly regarded family lawyers and she has now set up the first private family law firm in Sheffield. A qualified solicitor for 20 years, Michelle was previously a partner and head of family law at one of the area’s leading law firms. She has now branched out on her own and set up Acclaimed Family Law – an independent family law firm specialising in divorce, private children issues like guardianship, prenuptial agreements, cohabitation disputes and agreements. Her department has won the Yorkshire Lawyer of the Year award, she is individually named in The Legal 500 and was recently one of only a handful of Yorkshire family lawyers in
The Times newspaper’s VouchedFor list and was in the top tier with a fivestar rating. Michelle has always prided herself on delivering client satisfaction and she felt there was a gap in the market that was not being filled by the traditional law firm model. She says: “Most of my work comes Michelle from recommendations and the Cooper feedback from clients was excellent, but I still felt we could do even better if the firm was solely focused on the needs of family clients. “The accolade that meant the most to me was appearing on The Times newspaper’s VouchedFor list. You have to be nominated by clients, who The Times contacts to ensure they are bona fide, and I was in the top tier of reviews. “I realised then that client satisfaction is what drives me and I believed a standalone family law firm would better meet clients’ needs.” As a small, independent firm, Acclaimed Family Law can offer a flexible range of cost-effective packages such as fixed fees and pay as you go. They also offer a first free half hour interview with no obligation or pressure, as well as consultations outside normal working hours. PROMOTIONMICHAEL FOGG INDEPENDENT FUNERAL DIRECTORS
Arranging a funeral is a daunting task. Let Michael Fogg guide you through the process.
M
ichael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors is a familyowned and run company offering a personal service to the local community and surrounding area of Sheffield. Michael served his apprenticeship at independent funeral directors in and around Sheffield. Over the next 25 years he watched the independents gradually get swallowed up by large co-operatives, before deciding to bring tradition and a personal touch to his own independent company. Many large co-operatives have taken over small companies, but have retained the name and this can be very misleading. If the company does not say ‘independent’ it is a part of a large network. Although a relatively young company, Michael has many years’ experience and training with old traditional funeral directors He is passionate about his vocation, caring for families who have lost a loved one and guiding them through every step of the way. He says: “Our aim is to provide you with a professional, honest and personal service tailored to your individual requirements. We treat the families we care for and guide with the dignity and respect we would offer our own family. It is our privilege to be entrusted with the care of your loved one.” Michael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors is a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors and guarantees a
professional, caring service during this difficult period. They offer a professional individually-tailored service that encompasses every taste and requirement. Services available include all of the following: funerals, cremation, council-managed crematoriums, privately-run crematoriums, burial, council-owned cemetery, churchmanaged cemetery, woodland burials and coffins. A wide selection of coffins is available, from traditional wood to personalised and coloured. Guidance is available on the most suitable coffin for the occasion and also the following: specialised funerals, horse-drawn funerals and motorbike hearse funerals. Michael says: “Everyone has different requirements and as a traditional independent funeral directors we prefer to be contacted on the telephone and not by email. We believe this is a more personal service for you and your family. The telephone service is 24 hours, seven days a week. You are never transferred to a call centre like many large co-operatives. A member of the family will answer your call personally. “If you would like any advice or information regarding a funeral, please call. There is no charge for information and we know how daunting and stressful arranging a funeral can be, especially if you have never had the heartbreaking experience of losing a loved one.” Michael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors 27A Woodhouse Road, Intake, Sheffield, S12 2AY Tel: 01142653000

animals in talks and shows. Otter Springs is home to two short-clawed otters, Raiden and Nuri, who are already proving a very popular addition to the zoo thanks to their playful personalities. The front of the large exhibit is set several feet below ground, allowing a fantastic viewing experience for visitors. Glass panels run down one side of Otter Springs, providing the opportunity for incredibly close encounters with these naturally inquisitive animals.
If you go to Rother Valley Country Park this spring, you are sure to be in for a surprise with all the work that has been going on. Adventure Valley (formerly Playdales) has re-opened with a new play ship in the sand area and a new children’s team swing. There is a second miniature train on busy days and new water zorbs are available. There are new cycles for hire, including adult cycles, children’s cycles, carriers and family cycles where up to six people can enjoy the park together. After all that excitement you can enjoy drinks, ice creams and sandwiches at the kiosk by the play area. And the Stables Café is making their own lunch specials and homemade cakes, alongside a mobile catering unit near the activity centre on busy days.

Best for… dark chocolate decadence Heston from Waitrose golden egg, £20 for 270g OUR WINNER
A classy black box with a simple inscription sent us wild with anticipation before we broke into the most mysterious egg of our selection. And, once inside, we were even more impressed. A shiny golden egg concealed the most tantalising white chocolate eggs – each imbued with a zingy milk chocolate and mandarin ganache – all nestled on a bed of edible (super paper) straw. It was oh-so Heston and we loved every bit of it.
Words: Stephanie Burns
EGG-STRA SPECIAL So much chocolate, so little time. From dark decadence to tasty fun for the kids, our panel tests the best Easter eggs on the market. reme Eggs have been unseasonably gracing the supermarket shelves since early January – and don’t get us started on the controversial Cadbury’s shake-up. But don’t let that mild annoyance distract you from the joyful fact that Easter is finally now upon us. And that means it’s time to start checking out which eggs will make the grade this year. Fortunately, you don’t have to buy and
C
sample every chocolate treat available as our panel has done the hard work for you. Whether you’re buying for the kids, for your other half or just as a well-deserved treat for yourself, there’s something to suit the occasion. Read on to find out which egg took the top spot and which fell short of the mark.
Best for… white chocolate lovers
Best for… fun Nestle Smarties egg hunt, £3 for 140g
Hotel Chocolat white chocolate scrambled egg, £15 for 150g This thick, creamy white chocolate egg was an instant hit with the panel, and the intricate decoration was a beautiful bonus. Add in velvety-smooth praline housed in thick white chocolate shells for the accompanying chocolates and we were in heaven. A very close second.
IMAGEmagazine 48
While the quality of the chocolate won’t blow you away, the kids will relish the opportunity to hunt around the garden for these eight brightly wrapped eggs. And when they do track them down, a gentle shake will reveal not only a chocolate egg but also a smattering of mini smarties to reward their efforts.

Best for… a super sweet tooth
Best for… variety
Thorntons caramel cheesecake egg, £15 for 448g Not for the faint hearted, this indulgent egg takes inspiration from a classic dessert. The caramel cheesecake reveals itself not just in the explosion on the front of the egg, but throughout the shell with flecks of crunchy biscuit and caramel delighting at every bite.
Marks & Spencer chocolate egg selection, £10 for 195g If you’re buying for someone who enjoys a variety of flavours, M&S has the answer. Milk chocolate with popcorn and popping candy, white chocolate and raspberry pavlova, and milk chocolate butter crunch make up this tasty trio.
Best for… milk chocolate lovers Green & Blacks tasting collection egg, £17.99 for 525g
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Belgian white chocolate Easter egg with pistachios, £6 for 220g
Known for its high quality chocolate (37 per cent cocoa solids, no less) and intense flavours, Green & Blacks have a loyal following. This collection shows why. Two full-sized bars of chocolate – one sea salt, one butterscotch, both divine and packed with flavour – accompany a truly delicious milk chocolate egg. A little on the expensive side, but worth every penny.
At first glance, the panel was hugely impressed with this beautiful egg. The gentle green hue, the nutty flecks present throughout the shell and the promise of a good pistachio hit got our mouths watering. But, upon tasting, we were sadly disappointed with the too-subtle pistachio flavour. A nice white chocolate egg but it won’t satisfy serious nut lovers.
Best for… the kids
Best for… the eco-conscious
Tesco Doug the dinosaur, £4 for 200g There are few more exciting prospects than animal-shaped chocolate when you’re a youngster – and Doug the Dinosaur certainly ticks that novelty box. But while the superthick chocolate makes for an indulgent treat, kids will need a strong adult to help break Doug’s incredibly tough shell. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Best for… something different
Montezuma organic milk chocolate eco egg with butterscotch, £7.99 for 150g Though the lure of butterscotch got our tastebuds tingling, we were let down by the very subtle flavour. That said, the chocolate was creamy, it wasn’t too sweet and the flecks of butterscotch offered a welcome crunch. We were also impressed by the environmentally friendly, biodegradable sleeve.

McKee cards raise more than £13,000 for hospital arts Charity Christmas cards designed by legendary Sheffield artist Pete McKee raised more than £13,000 for Artfelt, The Children’s Hospital Charity’s arts programme. Artfelt transforms the hospital’s walls and spaces with bright art, helping children recover in an environment tailored to them. The programme also puts on workshops for youngsters to
provide distraction during anxious moments – such as before an operation – and to break up long stays on the wards. Pete McKee is a patron of Artfelt and has been designing the charity’s Christmas cards for years. He said: “I'd like to thank everyone who supported last year’s card, making it the most successful year yet. I know the much-needed money raised will be put to great use and I'm always blown away by the response the cards get and, as ever, very proud to be asked to produce the cards.” To donate to Artfelt, visit www.tchc.org.uk/artfelt/donate.

Beighton Women’s Institute’s craft group has created a wall hanging depicting all aspects of Beighton life. Over the course of three years, 15 craft members mapped the village and produced panels using various craft skills, and seven members stitched these panels onto a backing, bordering it with details of community groups and establishments not featured on the main panel. The finished hanging was fireproofed and now hangs in the Limes Club in Beighton. It was officially unveiled by Chrissie Booth, chair of Derbyshire Federation of Women’s Institutes, followed by a social evening and buffet.
