Top this… Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel now has a unique new feature for your special occasion.

I
f wedding bells are set to ring for you soon, there is one venue in South Yorkshire that should be top of your viewing list. Steeped in a rich history dating back to the 12th century and nestled in stunning countryside, Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel has everything you need to create your dream wedding. As well as offering a perfect blend of charm, tradition and modern sophistication, for those in search of something slightly less conventional than a sandwich buffet or a hog roast for evening nibbles, the hotel now has a fantastic woodfired pizza oven, which produces ‘proper’ delicious thin and crispy Italian pizza. Brides and grooms are always looking for ways to make their day extra special and chef Ben Pollock thought the oven would offer something unique. It was launched at the wedding fair in March and has proved to be a huge success among customers at both conferences and private functions. Couples who opt for pizza choose three types, which are baked constantly throughout the evening. Personalised pizzas are available on request, cooked in the super-speedy time of just two-and-ahalf minutes. The wedding bar has also been totally refurbished and now includes fabulous lights, which can change colour to match the theme of the wedding. No matter what kind of wedding you’d like – from a complete bespoke service to ready-made packages – the hotel can cater for you.

And, as Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall only hosts one wedding a day, couples and their guest get full exclusive use of the facilities. A wedding here includes your own private bar, a private entrance to the courtyard, barbecue (on request), evening celebrations, onsite complimentary car park and there is even a totally separate room where the bride can get ready. With 46 bedrooms on site – including two brand-new family rooms – there’s plenty of space for guests to stay overnight. All rooms are non-smoking and come with complimentary wi-fi. For those looking for something a bit more special, there’s the Robert de Stuteville suite, which overlooks the tranquil hotel gardens and is furnished with a free-standing bath. And let’s not forget the Lord John Darcy Suite – as one of the hotel’s oldest rooms, its traditional oak-panelled walls and magnificent four-poster bed are sure to make your stay a memorable one. With its beautiful setting and fascinating past, Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel is a unique experience. So whatever kind of wedding you’re dreaming of, the stunning facilities are sure to match up. Why not get in touch with the events team at the hotel now to discuss your needs. They’ll be sure to make your memorable day run without a glitch. Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel High Street, Mosborough, Sheffield, S20 5EA Tel: 0114 248 4353 www.mosboroughhall.co.uk

PROMOTIONMICHAEL FOGG INDEPENDENT FUNERAL DIRECTORS
Arranging a funeral is a daunting task. Let Michael Fogg guide you through the process.
M
ichael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors is a familyowned and run company offering a personal service to the local community and surrounding area of Sheffield. Michael served his apprenticeship at independent funeral directors in and around Sheffield. Over the next 25 years he watched the independents gradually get swallowed up by large co-operatives, before deciding to bring tradition and a personal touch to his own independent company. Many large co-operatives have taken over small companies, but have retained the name and this can be very misleading. If the company does not say ‘independent’ it is a part of a large network. Although a relatively young company, Michael has many years’ experience and training with old traditional funeral directors He is passionate about his vocation, caring for families who have lost a loved one and guiding them through every step of the way. He says: “Our aim is to provide you with a professional, honest and personal service tailored to your individual requirements. We treat the families we care for and guide with the dignity and respect we would offer our own family. It is our privilege to be entrusted with the care of your loved one.” Michael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors is a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors and guarantees a
professional, caring service during this difficult period. They offer a professional individually-tailored service that encompasses every taste and requirement. Services available include all of the following: funerals, cremation, council-managed crematoriums, privately-run crematoriums, burial, council-owned cemetery, churchmanaged cemetery, woodland burials and coffins. A wide selection of coffins is available, from traditional wood to personalised and coloured. Guidance is available on the most suitable coffin for the occasion and also the following: specialised funerals, horse-drawn funerals and motorbike hearse funerals. Michael says: “Everyone has different requirements and as a traditional independent funeral directors we prefer to be contacted on the telephone and not by email. We believe this is a more personal service for you and your family. The telephone service is 24 hours, seven days a week. You are never transferred to a call centre like many large co-operatives. A member of the family will answer your call personally. “If you would like any advice or information regarding a funeral, please call. There is no charge for information and we know how daunting and stressful arranging a funeral can be, especially if you have never had the heartbreaking experience of losing a loved one.” Michael Fogg Independent Funeral Directors 27A Woodhouse Road, Intake, Sheffield, S12 2AY Tel: 01142653000

PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN
John Knight, Solicitor and assistant head of property at Wosskow Brown, on why his team is the right choice when buying or selling a home.
M
oving house is stressful enough without unreliable solicitors adding to the hassle. So don’t take the risk – choose a firm you know you can
trust. Wosskow Brown has provided a conveyancing service for more than 30 years and boasts a raft of technical knowledge and expertise. John Knight joined the team five years ago and, along with around 20 staff at the firm’s four offices, has a strong focus on client care, along with a proud track record of efficiency and speed. Being independent from estate agents, they only work in your best interests and will never pressure you to exchange or complete before you are ready. “Estate agents often try to tie people into using their preferred solicitor because they may receive a referral fee for doing so,” John explains. “However, if these solicitors have hidden fees, the total cost can be much more than anticipated.”
He advises people to ring around and consider all options before making a final decision. “You should always ask if the quote you have been given is the full and final quote, in case there are any additional costs that you are not aware of,” John continues. “We offer clear, transparent quotes so you will only pay exactly what you are expecting.” For homeowners selling their house, the best time to contact John and the conveyancing team is when the property has been listed with the estate agent. For buyers, it is when the offer has been accepted. This ensures the initial details are in place and the process can progress as quickly as possible. As members of the Law Society Conveyancing Quality Scheme, the team undertakes regular continual professional development training. They have also signed up to Veyo, which has modernised the home-buying and selling process with a transparent, efficient and secure online portal that can be accessed by both conveyancers and home-movers. This enables clients to keep up-to-date with how their case is progressing at all times. For a free quote, or to find out more about their competitive fees – including price matching for most genuine written quotes – contact the conveyancing team on property@wosskowbrown.co.uk or on the numbers below. Ark Veterinary Surgery approached JD Developments after recommendation from one of their clients for our major redevelopment and extension of facilities. “I can honestly say that Jason and his team handled a complex two stage project very efficiently. They were clean and tidy, understood and maintained our need for hygiene and security, and enabled us to continue to work with the minimum of disruption.”
Mr & Mrs Redfern from Killamarsh chose JD Developments to carry out a complicated loft/balcony conversion to their bungalow. “Despite being at the other side of the world whilst most of the work was undertaken, the result is magnificent. The quality of workmanship is first class and the team were extremely professional in their approach to the build. We would not hesitate to recommend JD Developments to anyone considering a new build or conversion project.”

marketing and lifestyle brochures in particular, and our proactive approach to selling houses before we even have photos taken. “Properties don’t sell themselves. First impressions count and we want every property on our books to look its absolute best. Our stunning brochures, floor plans, high-resolution photographs, coupled with expert staging advice highlight every home’s best features and attract buyers. “We only use professional photographers who understand the Redbrik philosophy of creating beautiful lifestyle images to capture the character of your home. “In addition, our bespoke marketing literature is backed up by a top class database software system, which allows us to utilise the information we hold to accurately match applicants to homes. “At Redbrik we pride ourselves on achieving results for every customer, and we recently recorded our best ever month in business which shows we are delivering. In March we booked more viewings, took more offers and recorded more sales across our branches. “Everyone works extremely hard for our clients and our results and expansion are testament to that. With our Crystal Peaks branch now open we have a great opportunity to have an outstanding year.”
Case Study: Since opening the Crystal Peaks branch Redbrik have sold ten properties. Sandy is in the process of selling her property on Rotherham Road in Killamarsh with Redbrik. Sandy said: “I hadn’t moved house in a really long time so at first I found the prospect of moving house daunting. I really appreciated all the advice, guidance and time Redbrik gave me to ensure my property had the correct asking price and was expertly marketed. “I really liked how friendly the staff were and I never felt like I was passed from pillar to post. “Redbrik achieved multiple viewings and offers within the first week of marketing my property and subsequently agreed a successful sale which is going through at present.”

Gymnastics programme expands to meet growing demand A gymnastics programme has doubled in size to meet growing demand for the sport in Sheffield. New freestyle, rhythmic and teen gymnastics sessions have been introduced by the charity Sheffield City Trust (SCT). Extra beginner and pre-school gymnastics lessons have also been added to SCT’s programme, which runs at venues including Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Springs Leisure Centre and Concord Sports Centre. The latest gymnastics participation figures show Sheffield is bucking the national trend. In the last year, there has been a 102 per cent increase in the number of people taking part in SCT gymnastics lessons with local attendance figures up from 254 to 512. Sport England’s Active People Survey shows a national decline in once-a-week participation. SCT’s charitable objective is to improve the health and wellbeing of Sheffield people by providing facilities for sport and leisure activities. Bev Baker, aquatics and gymnastics manager for the trust, said: “Gymnastics is one the fastest growing sports in Sheffield and it’s great to see the city bucking the national trend. “By expanding our programme, we hope to meet this increasing local demand by providing opportunities for even more people of all ages to enjoy trampolining. “We’ve got sessions for everyone, from pre-school gymnastics for children as young as 18 months, right through to adult lessons which can help improve strength and flexibility, and supplement traditional cardio and weight training. “Our new freestyle and teen gymnastics sessions offer opportunities for teenagers and young adults to take part in an activity along with their friends.” For more information visit www.sivltd.com/activity/gymnastics.
New golf scheme gets city golfers on course A new scheme aimed at getting more people into golf has been launched in Sheffield. Sheffield City Trust (SCT) has introduced goGOLF at its four local golf courses including Birley Wood and Tinsley Park. Each participant will be given three 30minute lessons with a PGA-qualified coach. Those taking part can then take advantage and practise what they’ve learnt with three months free access to Birley Wood and Tinsley Park, as well as Tapton Park and Beauchief after 1pm. goGOLF also offers unlimited access to Tapton Park’s nine-hole academy course. The coaches will teach the basics from grip and posture to swing and putting. Andy Carnall, golf manager for SCT, said: “For anyone inspired by watching the Masters on TV, goGOLF has been designed to be an easy and affordable introduction to the sport. “Whether you’re completely new to golf, you’ve tried it before or you are reasonably confident and want to get back into this fantastic sport, goGOLF is the perfect place to start.” For more information visit www.sheffieldgolf.co.uk/gogolf.

What’s the secret to a beautiful lawn... this season?
W
ith spring just around the corner, now is the time for our thoughts to turn to the garden and our lawns in particular. Is your lawn looking as green, healthy and weed free as it should? If the grass is lacklustre, perhaps with unsightly bare patches or clumps of weeds or moss, then the chances are your lawn needs some TLC. But if the idea of going to the DIY store, buying preparations and spending precious time over the weekend putting down feed-and-weed products on your lawn does not appeal, then help is at hand. GreenThumb are lawn care experts who will keep your lawn looking healthy and green for less than it would cost you to do the job yourself. Our pictures – taken just weeks apart – show how in only a short time a patchy lawn can be transformed into a lush, green sward with no weeds. GreenThumb’s value-for-money lawn treatments start at just ÂŁ16 for a small garden and the average treatment is only ÂŁ22. We can also help your lawn stay greener during hot summers, tackle pests or diseases that attack grass and give your grass the best chance of avoiding moss in the winter. Why not call GreenThumb Sheffield on 0114 276 0101 for a free lawn inspection and then sit back and enjoy ‘all your hard work’‌ Email: sheffield@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

PROMOTIONWARD’S NURSERIES & GARDEN CENTRE
Start the summer with a brighter outlook, with a little help from Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre.
T
here are many benefits that come with the summer months; free vitamin D, more fresh air and exercise, and the opportunity to get out into the garden and make the most of your precious outdoor space. Most gardens require a bit of brightening up, and there’s no better way to add a vibrant splash of colour than with some decorative hanging baskets. Not only do Ward’s Garden Centre stock ready-made hanging baskets, but they also offer a service where customers can bring in their old baskets and Ward’s creative staff will fill them. Director Sue Poulton says: “People can specify which plants to include or we can work to a colour scheme. There are so many different options, but often customers just ask us to make it really colourful – fuchsias and geraniums are really popular.” When you’ve got your garden looking bright and cheerful it’s likely you will want to show it off to friends and family – and what better way to do so than with a barbecue? If you’re hosting a party, or simply have a craving for some tender grilling in the great outdoors, Ward’s has all the cooking

equipment you can dream of. They sell wood-burning and gas barbecues, as well as Kadai barbecue firebowls – ideal for alfresco cooking and socialising. Not only do they provide the equipment you need, but they also sell marinades, which add a flavoursome twist to meats. They have crackers, dips and chutneys including the Cottage Delight range, which has won good taste awards as well as Stubbs and Mrs Darlington. With more people visiting it’s essential you have enough garden furniture for everyone and Ward’s selection will not disappoint. Much of their selection can be kept indoors or outdoors and there is a vast range of materials, styles and colours – you’re sure to find something that will perfectly complement your garden. Their huge variety of chairs is enviable; choose from smart wooden slanted ones, rocking chairs, or something cosier. Getting further into the season, when the weather has warmed up, it’s time to start thinking about summer bedding plants such as petunias, sweet peas and busy lizzies. Fruit and veg like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers can be planted in a greenhouse, but Ward’s also sells outdoor varieties – fantastic if you don’t have the space for a greenhouse. There are many ways to improve your garden this summer; if you’re looking for inspiration or already have an idea of what you’d like to create, pop down to Ward’s Garden Centre and their friendly staff will be happy to help. FOR THE LOVE OF THE LAND There’s much more to Crystal Peaks than simply shopping… the centre is on a mission to save the environment. Phoebe Seymour reports.
I
wander onto a bridge, over a trickling stream, through some trees and out into the glorious sunshine. There is a winding path ahead of me with meadows on both sides, with patches of blossoming beds of flowers, hand-woven hedges and a variety of birds tweeting in the trees. No, I’m not in the middle of the Derbyshire countryside. Believe it or not, this is just yards away from Crystal Peaks, where the shopping centre's involvement in a number of environmental projects, is evident where ever you look. Not only are there beautiful hanging baskets and planter tubs of colourful flowers outside Crystal Peaks’ main entrance in preparation for the Yorkshire In Bloom contest, which the centre has won for the last three years, but the surrounding land is maintained all year round by the centre's onsite landscape team to encourage biodiversity in the area. The stumpery outside the mall's offices is an area filled with logs and tree stumps, providing a welcome habitat for fungi and insects. Since

2009, the roof has been home to a colony of bees, which has doubled in size to four hives. The efforts of centre manager Lee Greenwood and facilities manager Mark Jackson helped Beighton village win Britain In Bloom in the past and last year were presented with the Gold Green Apple Award 2014 for their involvement in the Waterthorpe Ochre Dyke and Wildflower Corridor Project at a Houses of Parliament ceremony. Lee explained that all these projects are part of Crystal Peaks’ landowners, Hermes' Responsible Property Investment Scheme, which considers the centre's impact on the environment. “It’s one thing to have nice planters and having the place look clean and tidy, but these days, Britain and Yorkshire In Bloom are looking for a genuine commitment to the environment and the wider community as part of their judging criteria,” he said. But it’s not just about winning awards. “We're a major landholder, covering nearly 40 acres and over the last 30 years the housing in the area has grown and grown. We are virtually on our customers’ doorsteps, so it’s www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

important to ensure these areas are a pleasant place to live and work.” The Waterthorpe Ochre Dyke and Wildflower Corridor Project is two years into a five-year plan to maintain the stretch of land between Thorpe Green and Beighton High Street. The project involves laying new paths, installing bridges and bird boxes, laying hedgerows, planting trees, cultivating land, planting native wildflowers and digging ponds. The scheme has secured an impressive £60,000 worth of funding for the next 18 months thanks to a number of sponsors including the Veolia Environmental Trust, Crystals Peaks Shopping Mall and Retail Park and Incentive FM. Heading the project is the Sheffield Landscape Trust, which runs a programme of activities with volunteers from the community and local schoolchildren. There was a hedge-laying course in October and a newt count walk tin March. Children from Emmanuel and Waterthorpe School planted the first seeds early last year, so they will be able to see the fruits of their labours this summer. The children also created interpretation boards to educate people about the local wildlife and flowers. Sheffield City Council’s countryside planning officer Karl Knight, who works with the Landscape Trust explained why the project is beneficial for everyone living in the area. “It’s about educating and changing people’s perceptions. Hopefully those children who plant seeds are more likely to grow up to care about their area and won’t want to vandalise or drop litter because they’ll have a greater sense of stewardship and ownership.” Crystal Peaks’ monthly clean-up days are run by a three-man onsite landscape team in conjunction with the Riverside Stewardship Company (RSC), which cleans up canals and streams and provides health and safety expertise so that Crystal Peaks staff and other local volunteers can get involved too. The project may be about educating children and locals about the meadows right on their doorsteps, but even Lee admits they need support from the experts. “Most bluebells you find in the UK are a hybrid of French and Spanish ones and not those that naturally grow in the woodlands,” he explained. “We nearly made the mistake of planting these on the watercourse, which could have had a detrimental effect to the existing native bluebells. “It’s about balance and conservation because you have to be careful about what you plant,” adds Mark who manages the onsite team. “You should be planting what’s naturally in the area, not bringing in plants that wouldn’t naturally grow in these habitats because these may overwhelm or destroy naturally occurring species.” The team is now careful to bring in plants that will benefit the local wildlife. One example of this is the bee orchids, which can be found in 15 locations around the Crystal Peaks site. The plants, which mimic the look of bees, are locally rare, but since they have been relocated to many areas including the stumpery, they have made a great habitat and attracted more insects. Lee and the team now look to the official guidelines set by the Wildlife Trust’s Biodiversity Benchmark landholder awards because it gives them more support and access to technical expertise so they know that what they do ties in with the rest of the ecosystem and fits in with the Sheffield City Council’s’ biodiversity action plan. Not only is the project benefitting its volunteers, it is also creating

new jobs in the area. Crystal Peaks is working with Sheffield College to employ a new landscape apprentice. Looking to the future, an Urban Nature Park project will direct the rainwater that usually goes into car park drains into a natural irrigation system to the surrounding land. The Ochre Dyke and Wildflower Corridor Project however, is about going back to basics. “I think we’ve lost an important asset. Over the last 75 years, around 97 per cent of meadows have been wiped out because we don’t do the traditional management of land that we used to,” said Karl. “It’s important that we hold on to what little we have left.” Crystal Peaks has a number of events coming up, including Emmanuel Environment Day on 16 May, with stalls run by Emmanuel Church, and a Bee Walk led by the centre’s beekeeper, Karen Ismarova on 16 June.

“The whole point of schools is that children come first and everything we do must reflect this single goal – ‘Students First’.” – Sir Michael Wilkins, Academy Principal and Chief Executive
O
utwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT) was born out of the success of Outwood Grange College. This large school of 2,200 students was transformed under the leadership of Sir Michael Wilkins and the Outwood academy group is now one of the highest performing groups of schools in the country. Sir Michael’s vision has always been to put students first and this ethos has been paramount to OGAT’s success. OGAT is committed to providing an outstanding educational experience, in a well disciplined and supportive environment and is helping thousands of students achieve their potential.
The Trust’s primary focus is to offer high-quality educational outcomes, guidance and support, and to deliver exciting, engaging lessons, a flexible curriculum and an extensive range of activities beyond the classroom. OGAT is a multi-academy sponsor and the family of schools currently comprises of 13 secondary schools and three primary schools, who work in collaboration with each other to ensure that all students – irrespective of their starting point – receive an excellent education. In January 2014 The City School became an academy under the sponsorship of OGAT and this year the
GCSE results moved the school to 12th out of 25 Secondary Schools in Sheffield – prior to OGAT’s arrival, it was 22nd. This meant that year 11 students obtained record-breaking results. The Trust relishes the opportunity to be part of the much-needed regeneration of all areas it works in, and wishes to play a full role in the wider community. Choosing the right secondary school for your child can be one of the most difficult decisions a parent has to make. Every child has the right to an outstanding education, and at Outwood Academy City they are determined to provide it.

n 2014 Outwood Academy City achieved record-breaking GCSE results. This meant that 55 per cent of year 11 students achieved five A*–C GCSEs including English and maths – up from 43 per cent the previous year. The principal, Richard Brooke, is confident that 2015 will see even better results. So how and what has Outwood done to bring about such rapid change to transform this school from its special measures Ofsted rating, to a safe, nurturing learning environment? Richard has worked in many different Outwood academies and says their success is down to the core principle that staff demonstrate on a day-to-day basis of putting students first. The Academy also benefits from a unique leadership model which positively impacts on student outcomes. Richard says: “We have very talented staff that have proven experience and some wish to get a feel for senior leadership. Our model allows staff the opportunity to take on a leadership role where they are supported to develop their skills and then, when the opportunity arises they can confidently apply for roles such as
We Will Rock You
assistant principal and move on from there. The model is particularly successful because more staff are leading on initiatives that will allow change to happen quickly and effectively.” Staff and students work closely together and this has been paramount to the progress of students and the Academy as a whole. It’s impressive how much knowledge they have on each and every student, which means teachers can monitor and provide personalised intervention to ensure that every student reaches their full potential. Each senior leader has a group of critical students that they work very closely with to offer support and encouragement. Praising Stars© is an assessment cycle held every six weeks. Parents are informed of their child’s progress and are able to meet with subject staff at parents’ evening. Each student receives an effort grade and a prediction which is then reassessed every six weeks. If their targets are not reached, a learning manager will look at ways to provide support for them. Richard says: “With every decision that we make we consider how it will benefit the student. It’s all about working together, problem
039 - 042 Image May15_Layout 1 29/04/2015 10:18 Page 3
solving and adapting to support the students.” Richard’s office is near to the maths and English departments, and it turns out this is no coincidence, as he likes to keep a close eye on these particular subjects. It’s easy to see how involved he is in every aspect of the academy and talks passionately about how the attitudes of students have become more positive since Outwood became involved with the school. “We’re still on a journey. It’s about winning hearts and minds.” Although the academy has a keen eye on academic success, this is not the only focus. The academy walls are lined with eye-catching images, brainchallenging riddles and subjectrelevant information. Everything the academy does is with the intention of inspiring and encouraging its young people. Collaborative and peer learning is promoted and interruptions in lessons are kept to a minimum due to a wellimplemented behaviour policy. They maintain an environment where students and staff feel safe; senior staff and learning managers meet and greet students on the gate each morning and during break times are always available for any student that needs them.
A school day at Outwood lasts from 8.25am to 2.30pm, which allows plenty of time for an hour’s enrichment activity at the end of the day. There is a huge selection on offer, from sports such as badminton and trampolining, to journalism and a ukulele club. One of the big highlights of the year is the year eight graduation ceremony, a formal event where students don caps and gowns to celebrate their progressions from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4. All students who graduate are
offered the opportunity to take part in a residential adventure experience. Year six students from the feeder primary schools are also invited to come along and see their peers graduate and to give them a taste of Outwood Academy City. Those with a flair for creativity also have plenty of opportunity to showcase their talents with shows like last year’s We Will Rock You, which was a sell-out over the three nights it ran. This had a cast of 100-plus members and featured much loved Queen Songs as well as some great choreography, which was devised by the students. The academy is very much a community and teachers work together with the students on Student Voice, where elections are held annually to vote for and elect a student president. There are many different committees such as anti-bullying, fundraising, hospitality and a year 11 prom committee. If you would like your child to be part of this community; receive an outstanding education, with a wealth of support, care and guidance then contact the academy today – any prospective parent is welcome to visit during the day and have a tour around the Academy.

Year 11 student testimonials:
Luke Heald I’m so glad that Outwood came in, they introduced things specific to each student, like intervention to help in the subjects you need. When I was younger I would never have dreamed of being on-level with the year 11s, but some of the year nines are doing just as well as us. Pupils at other schools think Outwood is really strict, but when you come here you realise the rules are in place for a reason. As well as having a focus on subjects that you need, like maths and English, Outwood don’t forget about others; they think about your interests and what’s best for you. I’m doing better in maths and English than I ever have done, but they put on opportunities like the Outwood festival. I can leave here saying I’ve performed in a professional place, in a professional production, and now I’ve got a scholarship to go to Renaissance Arts, a dance school in Leeds and I hope to go on to become a dancer.
Nicole Moshkovitz I used to be stubborn when Outwood first came, but they won me over. Now I wish I’d got my head down from the beginning – but I’ve managed to go from all bottom sets to top sets. You don’t see incidents of people being picked on anymore. Just think how well the year seven students will do now, being guided all the way. There’s actually a girl in the year below us doing A-Level maths already! I’m going on to do A-Levels in psychology, English literature and history, and I want to carry on and do psychology at university. I think people know the school has been taken over, but they don’t realise to what extent. It’s much more than just a name change.
Molly Fitzakerley Before Outwood took over my grades weren’t very good, but recently I’ve had more support and I’m getting up to target. They have also helped with my confidence. I have always wanted to be a dancer, but I don’t want to move away at this age. I’m doing a full time dance course at Hillsborough and hopefully will go on to dance in places like London.
Zora Fearnehough – Student President Before Outwood came I remember thinking I’d be happy with an office job and scraping Cs and now I’m getting As and Bs. I want to go to Hillsborough College and do a BTEC in sport and exercise science and hopefully go on to university to be a PE teacher. The atmosphere at school is very encouraging now and the teachers are constantly asking us to think about what we are doing. They push us to do our UCAS, help us get our grades and go further, and it makes you think, I can actually do this, I can be what I want to be. The school moulds you as a person.

IMAGEMOTORING
Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest motoring news. The thinking mans supercar The last generation Audi R8 was a huge success. This new version has some big shoes to fill. Based on the Lamborghini Huracan, the new Audi R8 will come in two flavours when it’s released in late 2015: the V10 and V10 Plus. The former obviously gets a V10 engine, this time packing 533hp. The latter also has a V10, but the Plus adds an extra 69hp, equating to a total output of 602hp – the most powerful production Audi ever. Both versions come with quattro allwheel drive with variable torque control, and all the latest Audi tech including the ‘virtual cockpit’ for the instruments. Plus, only a duel-clutch transmission will be offered. No manual. The V10 will start from £119,500 and the V10 Plus from £137,500.
Who needs an SUV? Volkswagen has done to the Passat what they did to the Octavia: they’ve jacked-up the ride-height, added black body cladding as well as fitting permanent all-wheel drive. For sure it’ll tackle muddy terrain better than most SUVs and with the Passat’s mandatory estate body, it’ll be as practical, if not more so. There will be five engines available which range from 148hp to 217hp for the petrol engines and 148hp to 237hp for the diesels’. All engines will come with a stop-start system, the ability to recover energy lost whilst braking and battery regeneration.
Porsche 911 GT3 RS – it’s back Porsche’s ultimate track-day monster has returned. Gone is the GT3’s 3.8-litre engine and in arrives a new 4.0-litre straight-six unit. Power has risen to 500hp making the 0-62mph sprint a blur at 3.3 seconds and the 0-124mph time takes 10.9 seconds. Only the PDK dual-clutch gearbox will be offered. Prices will start from £131,296 when they arrive in Porsche showrooms in May.
New found sophistication? The eagerly anticipated new Ford Focus RS will be packing a new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine under its bonnet, housing 316hp. To tame all these rampaging stallions, the power is delivered through – for the first time in a Focus – an all-new all-wheel drive system. A six-speed manual is the only option as well. The tell-tail signs of the Focus RS are the addition of a new, aggressive front bumper; side skirts; a projecting rear wing; a prominent rear diffuser; and two enormous gaping exhaust tailpipes. Even with all these alterations, it looks rather subdued compared to previous RS models that went before; there’s no bonnet bulges or flared wheel arches. It still looks menacing though. Due to go on sale in early 2016 costing around £30,000.
Continued improvement The Ford EcoSport has had a hard life since it was born last year by not quite being able to match its closest rivals for space and driving enjoyment. Ford have realised this and so they’ve created the ‘sportier’ EcoSport S. Available later on in the year, the EcoSport S will incorporate the new engineering tweaks of the normal model – 10mm drop in ride height, improved sound deadening, a reworked steering system and improved styling changes to the interior – but the S will add a new exterior colour named deep impact blue, a black roof, black mirror caps, a sporty rear diffuser and privacy glass. The EcoSport S will incorporate the same engines as the normal EcoSport. The diesel engines however gain an extra 5hp.
