INTERVIEW

Take your breath away THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MAINTAINING RENISHAW HALL’S ENVIED GARDENS FALLS TO HEAD GARDENER DAVID KESTEVEN. HE SPEAKS TO HANNAH SANDERS ABOUT ALL THINGS GREEN. enishaw Hall and Gardens have been a breathtaking feature of the Derbyshire countryside for nearly 400 years. With clipped hedges, herbaceous borders, magnolia trees, rose gardens and winding paths trailing through the woodlands, a visit to this stunning venue makes for a truly unique experience. The house is set in over 300 acres of beautiful parklands and has been the home of the Sitwell family since 1625, when George Sitwell built a small manor house. In the 1800s, Sitwell Sitwell built the Georgian mansion that stands today. Now, the house is in the hands of Alexandra Sitwell – the first female owner of the hall and gardens in 400 years.

R

14 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

Renishaw Hall itself is a grand and stunning sight but, it’s the award-winning Italianate gardens, created by Sir George Sitwell, which leave a lasting impression on visitors. The gardens make it easy to fall down the rabbit hole into wonderland as they are spilt into ‘rooms’ by yew hedges and classic Italian statues, each one being filled with an impressive collection of colourful plants and extravagant herbaceous borders along with a selection of unique trees and shrubs. So much time, effort and passion has gone into the gardens, with designs from RHS Chelsea award-winner Arne Maynard and Lee Bestall along with Renishaw’s own head

gardener David Kesteven, who incorporates his love of all things gardening into every aspect of Renishaw. After a false start studying physics at university studying physics, David was 21 before he realised that he wanted to pursue a career in gardening. He worked with Humberside County Council as a gardener, before going on to work for a family friend and finally to English Country Gardeners who put him up for the job at Renishaw Hall and Gardens. David told us about what attracted him to gardening, his favourite elements of Renishaw’s gardens and the highlight of his career.

INTERVIEW

What attracted you to gardening?

When you get off the career ladder and have no clue what you’re going to do with your life, you have to stop and think where do you like being – and I liked being in historic gardens. Kew Gardens in London just sends shivers down my spine, as does Renishaw. I love the rare plants and trees and seeing how they grow, and to be able to work in a place every day that does that is amazing. If you can persuade someone to pay you for something you like doing, you will never work a day in your life, and this is what this job is. What is your favourite part of the gardens?

It varies depending on the time of year. At the moment it is the woodland area because of the bluebells and magnolias. But in July it would be the rose garden followed by the borders on the main lawn in August and then the bottom terrace in September. What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Winning Garden of the Year in 2015. This had been a goal of mine since I started the job, and it took 17 years but we got it and it was just an incredible feeling. Talk me through your role.

My work changes throughout the year, but the first job is always making sure Dave, Paul and James know what they are doing for the day. At this time of year I will be focusing on the greenhouse primarily, along with moving plants and weeding. Soon I will move on to staking, more weeding and deadheading plants, then planting out the annuals in June. In September it’s hedge cutting time, which we do for a solid six weeks. Then it’s time to cut all the borders, mulch them and put them to bed for the Christmas period and then in March it all kicks off again. What is your favourite flower?

It is impossible to pick just one, but there is something about the meconopsis grandis – the blue poppy – with its deep colour that is just fantastic. I am also a massive fan of magnolias, and I’m actually breeding them at the moment and raising them from seed. I’ve just got one flowering but I can see in about 25 years’ time the woods will be full of magnolias, all unique to Renishaw. In 2004 we really started planting magnolias, and then they eventually starting setting seed. It takes at least ten years from sowing the seed to get a flower, which is why not many people do it. Magnolias were one of the first flowering plants to evolve, and you can kind of see the hand of the creator in there, as these are big chunky flowers with not many petals as if someone was just learning to make flowers – they are just stunning. >>>

INTERVIEW

DAVID KESTEVEN’S GARDENER’S GUIDE: Tips to maintain and prepare your garden The answer to gardening is to put down a generous helping of organic mulch in autumn. Now is the time to start finding horse manure, leaf mould, wood chips and recycled green waste so you can put it on your garden once summer is over. Every year at Renishaw we put down about three to four inches of the compost on all the borders to ensure the plants have a good foundation to grow. It is also key to remember to water sparingly and never water your lawns. Water your flowers deep when you plant them and then leave them, as the organic matter in the soil will help keep the moisture in.

Tips for going eco-friendly The biggest bane for many garden is slugs, and you can be eco-friendly and get rid of them by using ferrous sulphate pellets. The pellets immobilise the slugs, so put the pellets down liberally when you have a wet night forecast with a sunny day following. Organic gardening tends to be associated with not using chemicals, but actually the words comes from adding organic matter to your soil. This is why it is important if you can to add organic mulch to your gardens. It is okay to use chemicals – just use them sparingly and only when needed. 16 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

INTERVIEW

Tips for making the most of a small garden Utilise plant pots – as they come in all shapes and sizes, and can fit in the smallest of spaces. Plant them with hardy annuals like marigolds, forget-me-knots and dahlias – if you can grow them from seed. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your plants, as they will tell you when they are ready for water. You can also grow micro veg on your windowsill, and it is really rewarding to see what your hard work has done. So if you have some seeds, compost, organic slug pellets and a decent watering can or mister you really can create a beautiful garden no matter what space you have.

Gardening jobs for June/July and August If you are growing roses, now is the time you should think about getting some fungicide for them if they had black spots previously. A healthy rose is lovely, so it’s important to keep on top of their appearance, so don’t forget to deadhead them too. If you have climbers they want tying in now before they break. And, if that plant in your garden fell over last year, stake it now before it falls again because it will do. Also, as much as it isn’t fun, cut your grass often.

Good summer bulbs Lilies are wonderful and you can probably still plant them now. They are great as different species either like a lot of shade while other like more sun, so you can tailor it to your garden. Lillium Miss Feya are another great one to plant, long with Clematis. With Clematis, group three together as with their small flowers they look stunning. Plus you can chop them back each year. In small gardens it is key to plant things that can rejuvenate year on year.

Summer to-do list for beginners • Grow annuals • Deadhead regularly • Weed regularly • Cut the grass • Get some nice comfy chairs in the garden so you can enjoy it

Think clearly

SPRING IS THE PERFECT TIME TO TURN YOUR ATTENTION TO HOME IMPROVEMENTS – AND THAT INCLUDES YOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS. f there is one thing most of us take for granted, it is the maintenance of our homes – specifically windows and doors. After all, how much maintenance could they need? Well, there’s much more to it than just installing them, as with any part of your house, windows and doors are prone to damage; hinges rust and start squeaking, rubber seals expire and your house gets draughty, locks jam and prevent your windows from opening or closing properly. These things are more common than you might think, and as we move into spring, and subsequently summer, now is the time you might want to start thinking about how to get the most out of your property. The benefits of maintaining your home is often touted in the colder months, however, it’s not just during winter that window and door repairs are a fantastic idea – quality glazing also keeps homes cool during spells of hot weather, and is a great way to make your home more energy efficient. As one of the leading glazing experts in the Eckington area, C Clear Glass and Glazing Services know the many advantages of weather-resistant windows and doors, and can handle all types of repairs and

And the team will also ensure your property is left clean and tidy at the end of each day. But it’s not just hands-on expertise that C Clear provides, as when it comes to excellent customer service, Chris believes it’s the little things that make a big difference. “We offer what the average company doesn’t; punctuality, friendliness and honesty – it is what we base our business around. We’re just as happy to repair a broken hinge as we are to fit a full window, and pride ourselves on ensuring we complete every project on time.

“As we’re a small family-run business, we aim to beat any genuine like for like quote, and you can place confidence in dealing only with our family members.” If you are looking for professional assistance with doors, windows or conservatories, C Clear Glass and Glazing Services can help. Give them a call today and their expert team will assist you in finding the best solution to your problem. BACK IN BLOOM THIS YEAR’S RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW PROMISES TO BE A RIOT OF COLOUR AND EXOTIC BLOOMS. RACHEL MARTIN PREVIEWS WHAT’S IN STORE

Visitors will be able to try out an immersive 3D virtual reality experience

28 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

et in the magnificent 1,000-acre Chatsworth Estate, the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, partnered by Wedgwood will return from 6 - 10 June with exciting new content, including a river of 12,000 Cosmos and more than 100 varieties of orchid. During Joseph Paxton’s time as head gardener the Chatsworth Estate boasted one of the most extensive orchid collections in the UK, and at this year’s show celebrity floral designer, Jonathan Moseley will join forces with Double H Nurseries to bring one of the UK’s largest orchid displays back to the estate. Housed within a bespoke representation of Joseph Paxton’s Great Conservatory, the display will feature over 100 varieties of the popular Phalaenopsis Orchid, creating an immersive floral extravaganza. The exotic blooms, in a sumptuous palette of lilacs, whites, purple, pale and cerise pink will adorn a central waterfall, and suspended from the ceiling will be a riot of sculptural branches, with large chandeliers dripping with mosses and tropical bromeliads from which will hang a further explosion of vibrant orchids. A Virtual Reality experience created by 3D expert and VR designer, Simon Mabey alongside Manchester Museum and Manchester University will immerse visitors further in the tropical display as they sit suspended amongst the flowers, experiencing the wonder of different orchids through the eyes of an insect. MosEley will also be at all the RHS shows with his British Flower Bus, where spectators can climb on board, see gorgeous British blooms and join him for demonstrations and free arrangement workshops using local grown flowers.

S

And for the first time at an RHS Show, a mass planting of over 12,000 Cosmos will create a striking vision of pink in front of the iconic Chatsworth House, for visitors to walk amongst and enjoy the sweet scent and beauty of this elegant summer flower. The important role plants play within cities will also be explored in the new Living Laboratory, showcasing some of the great ways plants can help both now and in the future as urban living intensifies. Plants and technology will be on display highlighting how different varieties can help address a number of urban challenges including pollution, flooding and food scarcity. Other show highlights include show gardens inspired by local landscapes, including The Great Outdoors Garden by Sheffield based designer Phil Hirst and a celebration of Hay Time in Yorkshire by Chris Myers. Continuing the agricultural theme, The John Deere Garden by Elspeth Stockwell and Jo Fairfax takes inspiration from farm buildings, ploughed wheat fields and natural woodland borders and will feature a circular sculpture of 100 tractors, celebrating the company’s centenary year of tractors. The history of Chatsworth House provides inspiration for some of the new innovative installations at this year’s show, and show partner, Wedgwood are working

with Chatsworth’s head of gardens and landscape Steve Porter and craftsman Carl Hardman of Landmark Walling to celebrate the ancient heritage craft of dry stone walling, an important feature in the British landscape. A ‘lost’ village that once stood in the shadow of Chatsworth House before being removed to make way for Capability Brown’s famous landscape is the inspiration behind Brewin Dolphin’s installation designed by multi award winning designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes. Liz Patterson, RHS Chatsworth Flower Show manager says: “We’ve been going all out in the Chatsworth team preparing some fabulous new experiences for the 2018 show. “On top of the exciting new content, the floral marquees will be bursting with top growers and nurseries and we have a fantastic line up of experts in the garden and artisan kitchen theatres hosting Q&A sessions, talks and demos throughout the week. “Visitors will also be able to get creative in the artisan craft area and we will see the return of the popular well dressing competition, plus lots more.”

Growing stronger TESTIMONIALS* STEPHEN BIRKBY BATTLED BACK FROM A LIFE-CHANGING INJURY – NOW HE’S HELPING OTHERS TO BEAT THEIR DISABILITIES AT PIONEERING COMMUNITY GYM. ome people have major difficulties to overcome before they can think about taking part in the everyday social and physical activities that many of us are fortunate to take for granted. After an industrial accident at work which fractured his spine, Stephen Birkby was left paralysed and told by doctors it would be unlikely he would walk again. Now, more than 14 years later Stephen is working as the founder and principal instructor at D.A.W.S Community Gym which provides support and assistance for those affected by both mental and physical disabilities. Stephen started D.A.W.S – Disability Awareness with Sport – a non-profit community gym in an attempt to combat the lack of exercise provisions for disabled people. Based at St George’s Park, Westfield, D.A.W.S promotes a friendly, social and safe environment which helps individuals achieve their own personal and fitness goals, as well as helping them tone-up becoming more mobile and flexible with the use of specialised gym equipment. After gaining charity status in October, they raised money to buy a specialist wheelchair trainer – a piece of equipment that has revolutionised the gym experience for wheelchair users – and they now have three of these, which can be hired out along with numerous other pieces of unique kit. “We’ve got people with cerebral palsy, those with spinal injuries, ex-service men and

S

people who have long-term health issues such as diabetes, high-blood pressure and arthritis. The beauty of this equipment is that we can put it in gym classes, so wheelchair users can exercise alongside able-bodied people,” said Stephen. The fundraising isn’t stopping there though, as Stephen and Tracey are currently looking to raise funds for transport, so they can take their work into the wider community. Stephen has worked hard to create a community within the gym by making it a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone, and he runs both group and private sessions to help users improve their balance, posture, health and general well-being. And, he also runs community sessions weekly for those individuals who can’t attend the gym. “It’s not just down to exercise - it’s about getting individuals out of the house and to somewhere they can meet people - so, it’s also about tackling social exclusion too.”

“It’s true that time is a great healer and in taking small steps, these have helped me grow stronger and more confident. Thank you to Steve for developing a niche gym for people with physical and mental issues.” “Stephen at D.A.W.S is great at helping you. I now feel so much fitter and happier, and plan to keep coming to the gym as long as I can.” *names have been removed for confidentiality purposes

IN BRIEF

Sheffield food favourite comes to Crystal Peaks An authentic taste of Sheffield is coming to Crystal Peaks with the opening of a new branch of Beres Pork Shop. The Beres hot pork sandwich has been a Sheffield favourite for the past 50 years and will now be available for the first time at the award winning shopping centre. The business was launched in 1961 by Hungarian butcher Sandor Beres, who left his home city of Budapest during the 1956 uprising and, after rebuilt his life in Sheffield. Sandor and his wife Eileen were eventually joined in the business by their son Richard and daughters Helen and Catherine. The company expanded with shops across north Sheffield and a factory on Rawson Spring Road, where the family bakes its own bread. Alongside its celebrated hot pork sandwiches, Beres also specialises in savouries, bread and cakes, cooked meats and home and party catering. The company’s launch at Crystal Peaks will be the 12th in a chain of Beres shop extending all the way from Chapeltown to Woodseats, via the city centre. “We are delighted to welcome Beres to Crystal Peaks,” said centre manager Lee Greenwood. “We are confident that our customers will all appreciate this addition to our range of fresh food outlets and we are always very pleased to be working alongside brands with such strong links to the Sheffield community.”

Take the breathtaking Chapman’s Peak drive to the Cape Peninsula Nature Reserve where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet stopping at the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, visit the vibrant city centre of Cape Town, go up Table Mountain in either the rotating cable car or take the pathways and hike up, a boat trip across to Robben Island or the seal colony from Hout Bay or a guided township tour. The beautiful island of Miyajima is home to the Itsukushima shrine

For all seasons JAPAN IS A STUNNING PLACE TO VISIT, AT ANY TIME OF YEAR. pen a world map and you will see the extensive Asia/Pacific region. Almost at the very centre you will see the Japanese archipelago stretching north to south along the edge of the Asian continent. Japan has lured untold number of adventurers since Marco Polo first introduced it to the world back in the 13th century as “Zipangu – the Land of Gold”. Though the Japan of today may not be a land of gold, the “Neo Zipangu” does possess powerful and magnet-like attractions: great cultural variety, colourful and inspiring natural attractions beautifully interwoven by

four distinct seasonal changes, not to mention the overflowing hospitality of its people. As such Japan has recovered from the natural disasters of 2011 and is vigorously gaining in popularity as a tourist destination again which anyone can enjoy on a reasonable budget and with a sense of complete security. This is where the past literally greets the future. This is where they both mingle. Japan has a long history of absorbing advanced cultures from ancient times through the middle ages. Later it began to assimilate elements of western civilisation from the latter half of the 19th century. Through these influences, the country has added rich new dimensions and depth to its indigenous culture. This marvellous harmony between the refinements of everything ‘Oriental’ blended with leading edge technology and the urban lifestyle you find in Japan today is truly proof of its long and eloquent history.

The Seasons No other country has the contrasting seasons that Japan enjoys. If you are undecided when to visit Japan, 42 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk

spring is spectacular when the plum and cherry blossom trees burst into bloom. From the first days of February when the plum blossoms debut in Okinawa, to the last days of May, when the last cherry blossoms fall from the trees of northern Japan, spring is a time of rebirth in the name of nature and human celebration throughout the land with numerous flower festivals being held everywhere. Spring is one of the most popular times to travel and planning and booking early is imperative. Summer is playtime in the land of nature, a season of rice planting and total greenery, summer is a season for visiting Mount Fuji, enjoying the fireworks almost every night and the large scale festivals that will linger through into September, but by October Japan is enjoying the crisp cooler days of its distinct autumn. Autumn brings swirls of changing leaves, vivid hues of crimson, gold, bronze and yellow that paint the hills and mountainsides in carpets of colour, a wonderful time to visit. The Momji maple tree turning a blazing red is not to be missed. Winter offers not only snowfall – a skier’s paradise – but sunshine and blue skies as well as cheaper prices and a quieter time to travel.

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: Okayama Castle; Nachi Waterfall; Nara Deer Park; Sagano

The Journey Start your journey in Tokyo, the most exciting metropolis in Asia where traditions from centuries past exist side by side with the ever-moving elements of the latest in urban culture that radiate their own special heat and energy. Most of the clichés are true. Tokyo is neon-wrapped, a hectic playground where trains are never late, vending machines are everywhere, but amid the bright signs and adverts there is also a Zen-like calm, often just a few steps away from the chaos. There is no real centre to Tokyo rather it has sub centres, connected by the circular Yamanote train line. It takes under three hours on the 200mph bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, an area spared from the air raids of WW2. On the journey you can visit Hakone, an area of natural beauty and UNESCO site and then Mount Fuji, Japan’s spiritual home. Since the mountain is covered in snow most of the year, the official climbing season is limited to July and August. The climb is worthwhile but not easy; a saying goes there are two kinds of fools; those that never climb Fuji and those

that climb it twice. Arriving in the ancient capital for 1,200 years, Kyoto has numerous shrines, temples, palaces and villas, repositories of Japan’s long history, while up in the low mountains that enclose the city, small villages huddle under forested slopes, offering fascinating glimpses of rural life. You will still find geishas in the old Gion district, kimono weavers, sake breweries and numerous craftsmen and storekeepers who carefully maintain the old ways and keep alive the flame of Japan’s traditional culture. From Kyoto you can visit Nara for its parks, temples and museums. While travelling you will feel safe, women can walk safely alone almost anywhere and it’s not unusual to see children riding the subway alone whilst sleeping on trains seems to be a national pastime. Many belongings have been lost only to find them returned intact the very next day. If you travel further south, you’ll find yourself in Hiroshima, a city re-emerged from the atomic bombing, the peace flame burns in front of the memorial cenotaph, never to be extinguished until all nuclear weapons are abolished. A short distance from Hiroshima is the beautiful island of

Miyajima, home to the Itsukushima shrine, a must-see for all standing alone in the sea. The Shinto shrine is a world heritage site as is known as one of the ‘three views of Japan’. Miyajima island is a romantic place, best enjoyed staying overnight at one of the islands ryokans, a traditional Japanese inn. Numerous superb hot spring resorts, known as ‘onsens’, are in fact ryokans built on the site of a hot spring. There are some 55,000 ryokans in Japan; a room in a ryokan will usually contain an undivided room floored with tatami matting, while sleeping on a ‘futon’ bedding laid out by maids and a traditional evening meal and breakfast. Make the beautiful island of Okinawa your final stop, the perfect chance to relax on a beautiful beach, sub-tropical coral reefs, emerald seas, sunny skies and tropical vegetation abound. There are more than 150 islands stretching a chain of 250 miles. There is no litter and no bins either, this is always taken home. This is an example of the remarkable social cohesion that Japan enjoys intertwined with its heart-warming hospitality makes it such a pleasant place to live and to visit. Japan awaits you… Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk 43

Janet on one of her fundraising endeavours at Crystal Peaks

Giving something back

AFTER A SUCCESSFUL DRUG TRIAL AT WESTON PARK HOSPITAL, CANCER SUFFERER JANET BLACKBURN MADE IT HER MISSION TO RAISE MONEY TO FUND FURTHER RESEARCH. SADLY, HER HUSBAND WASN’T SO FORTUNATE. anet Blackburn of Hillsborough was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and just two weeks later her husband, Robin, was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus. Following the diagnosis, Janet had her lymph nodes removed, underwent a mastectomy and received chemotherapy at Weston Park Hospital, and responded well to treatment. But sadly, her husband lost his fight with cancer in 2011, whilst both were receiving treatment simultaneously. “I feel honoured and humbled to have been able to share the precious moments we had left with Rob,” says Janet. “None of which would have been possible without the help and support of Weston Park Hospital and the specialist palliative care team at Northern General Hospital.

“I was very nervous about being admitted to Weston Park, not really knowing what to expect, or if I would be able to support my husband during his treatment. And yet, within an hour of arriving, the fantastic team had made me feel fully at home. “It may seem an odd thing to say, because they give you the worst possible news, but Weston Park Hospital is a place of warmth, compassion and laughter, and is staffed by an amazing team.” In March 2011, Janet was offered the opportunity to take part in a clinical trial called the D-CARE Study, which involved six sessions of chemotherapy followed by checkups at the hospital every three months. “Janet was one of the first patients to sign up to the D-CARE study and we are so grateful to her, and the other patients who

sign up to these studies, because not only do they often receive new cutting edge medicines first, they also help to improve quality of care and treatment for future patients,” says Sarah Brown, research nurse at the Cancer Clinical Trials Centre. “Meeting patients like Janet is the best part of my job.” D-CARE is a trial for women with breast cancer looking to see if a drug called Denosumab, which is normally used to strengthen and protect the bones from weakening due to osteoporosis or damage from cancers that have spread to the bones, can also help prevent breast cancer from spreading in the first place. “I was afraid that my whole world was going to come crumbling down, but instead, it was just the beginning. “I miss Rob every day, but getting through

the D-CARE trial made me feel like I had to go on, and not to let cancer be the deciding factor in how I’m going to lead my life. “It doesn’t end – it will be a lifelong journey – but I know everyone at Weston Park is there for me and will be walking with me for the rest of my life.” Since diagnosis and whilst still receiving treatment, Janet has gone on to raise £27,335.14 for Weston Park Cancer Charity through various fundraising initiatives. “The staff at Weston Park Hospital, and in particular at the Cancer Clinical Trials Centre, saved my life and reinforced what I already knew – continuing cancer research is the only way forward. “Like any other disease, cancer makes you feel powerless and angry, and though I’m not a doctor, a nurse, a researcher or anyone capable of helping people with cancer first hand, I can raise funds. “Every penny I raise for the Cancer Charity is a huge thank you from me, and I hope that one day I can raise enough to give more cancer patients access to pivotal treatment options.” Janet has a distinguished track record of charitable endeavours, which includes making handmade cards, craft sales, tombolas, raffles, recycling fundraising schemes, and a knit and natter group, which helps older people cope with social isolation and loneliness. Members of the community and local businesses including Castaways Cove, Tesco Saville Street and the Sheffield Steelers have also been making donations, including Easter eggs, tombola prizes and an assortment of soft toys. And such is the reach of Janet’s

campaign, a generous donation of wool recently arrived direct from London. “The response from my family, friends and the local and wider community has been tremendous. I’m thankful to everyone inspired by my effort and who contributes to my fundraising endeavour. It’s all about putting yourself out there and going for it and I’m hopeful that research will take us even closer to ending cancer. “I am always on the look-out for donations of wool and yarn, old clothes, towels, bedding, new or good-as-new bric-a-

brac, toiletries, non-perishable quality food and drinks, plastic bottle tops, biscuit wrappers and basically anything that can help ensure my fundraising efforts are as successful as possible. Any donation will be greatly appreciated.” If you would like to make a donation or assist Janet in her fundraising, call 07748 372591. And in the meantime, visit www.westonpark.org.uk to find out more about Weston Park Hospital and the pioneering research bringing forward the day when all cancers are cured.

MOTORING

DREAM COME TRUE Wouldn’t it be a dream come true if a supercar was converted into a fourdoor family saloon? Well thanks to Mercedes-AMG, this dream has come true. Called the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door Coupe, as the name suggests, it’s marketed as the fourdoor version of the big flagship AMG-GT sports car. Design cues such as the front grille, headlights and thin rear tail lights indicate the similarities between it and the flagship supercar. There will be three variants: AMG GT 63 S (639hp), AMG GT 63 (585hp) and AMG GT 53 (435hp). The 63 S and 63 will come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo engine as found in the AMG GT supercar while the 53 S variant will come with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder hybrid motor.

A SUPERCAR FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY? JORDAN CUTFORTH LOOKS AT NEW ARRIVALS WITH THE WOW FACTOR.

New Collezione Ever since the Fiat 500 was re-launched back in 2007, it’s always been the more fashionable and quirky alternative to the rest of the city car alternatives. Now a new special edition of the Fiat 500 has been launched, it’s called the Collezione and it’ll make you ever more fashionable. Available in hatch and convertible forms, it features a modern reworking of its great forerunner’s unmistakable design signatures, with chrome trim on the front bumper, bonnet and mirror caps and exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. There are unique two-tone colour liveries to choose from and the interior will be bathes with the same colours as the exterior. Available with a 69hp 1.2-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual or Dualogic transmission. Priced from £13,865.

A big deal Say hello to the brand-new version of the world’s most popular zero-emission vehicle – the Nissan Leaf. Electric vehicles are most definitely the future of the motoring landscape, so the release of the Nissan Leaf is most certainly a big deal. It has a completely redesigned interior which focuses on the driver and combines a clever use of space with optimum functionality. A 435-litre boot and foldable 60/40 split rear seats offers impressive storage options and maximum utility. A maximum luggage capacity of 1,176-litres is achievable with seats folded. The electric motor delivers a range of 168 miles on the combined cycle or up to 258 miles in city driving. Power is 150hp and 230Nm of torque. 100 per cent charge from alert (near empty) takes 7.5 hours.

WILD RIDE Everybody loves a Ford Mustang and since the Mustang has been available in righthand-drive configuration, us Brits have been able to taste much more of that fantastic slice of American pie. Now though, the Mustang has been updated: sleeker styling, enhanced engines, sharper driving dynamics and advanced driver assistance technologies. More athletic styling is underscored by crisp, clear LED lighting, bold new exterior colours and alloy wheel options. Upscale interior offers soft-touch materials and aluminium finishes. Powered by an updated 444hp 5.0-litre V8, it revs higher than the old unit and is mated to either a ten-speed auto gearbox or six-speed manual with rev-matching capabilities. Also available with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-pot motor, generating 286hp straight to the rear-wheels. Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk 47

SHEFFIELD MOTOR SHOW

Photographs: Roger Hart

THE SHEFFIELD MOTOR SHOW IS BACK WITH A NEW HOME, NEW ATTRACTIONS AND NEW CARS.

THE MOOR THE MERRIER! very year the Sheffield Motor Show gives local dealers from across the city a platform to showcase the latest models from a myriad of manufacturers, and this year is no different. However, due to uncertainties surrounding city centre developments, the annual event, which started in 2013 and has been held in Sheffield City Centre for the last four years, will move to The Moor, courtesy of Aberdeen Standard Asset Management. This year, the show will transform The Moor into a vehicle extravaganza from 9am to 4:30pm on 16 June, and 46 new cars will be exhibited. The show is a rare opportunity for anyone in search of a new car to view the latest models in one place. Dealers and manufacturers already on the list include: Lookers (Ford), Robins & Day (Peugeot), Bickerton Motors (Skoda), Stoneacre (Honda, Hyundai and Volvo), Europa (Mitsubishi and Subaru), Burrows (Toyota and Mazda) and JCT 600 (VW). After checking out the huge range of car displays, you can be forgiven for needing a breather, and a tantalising array of food and drink and family entertainment will be on offer from a selection of outdoor market vendors and inside the Moor Market.

E

And providing the soundtrack for the weekend will be students from The Sheffield Music Hub, who will be showcasing genres for all tastes from 12.30 to 3.50pm. “It’s always an exciting time of year when The Sheffield Motor Show arrives,” says joint organiser Roger Hart, of the Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club. “Last year, we took over Sheffield city centre for two glorious days, and the crowds flocked to see the cars. But this year, with a new location courtesy of Aberdeen Standard Asset Management, we promise more interaction and more entertainment. We can't wait.” Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between charities including Grimm & Co, a thriving apothecary located in the heart of Rotherham which runs innovative storytelling and writing workshops for young people; St. Luke’s Hospice, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust; Fable (For A Better Life with Epilepsy), which helps fund Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy for children and adults; Edale Mountain Rescue; Neurocare, which raised money for a ROSA Robot for the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to carry out brain surgery, and Rotary Charities. Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club meets on a Tuesday evening at Abbeydale Sports Club, and this year’s funds will be split between a number of worthy local causes.

If you are interested in displaying your vehicles, partnering with the event, or want more information on the show, call Roger Hart on 07831 305881. 48 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk
