PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN

Gary Crothers, solicitor advocate (higher courts civil proceedings) and family law specialist at Wosskow Brown, on family arrangements for Christmas.

A

s the countdown commences, many people will be approaching the festive season not with boundless joy but instead with a sense of trepidation. For separated families – especially those who have only recently parted – Christmas can bring stressful decisions. And while deciding where the children will spend their time during the Christmas holidays may be the last thing you want to think about right now, the sooner you decide, the more relaxed everyone will be by the time December arrives. Arrangements should be in place to determine where the children will wake up on Christmas morning, if or when they will see the other parent on the day, or if they will be spending alternate Christmases with each parent. Leaving it until the last minute to make these plans could put a dampener on what would otherwise be an enjoyable time for all. If there is a dispute it may become necessary to make an application to the courts for a Child Arrangement Order, a court order that states who a child should live with, how often they see the other parent and can also deal with the arrangements for special days such as Christmas and birthdays. The application to court must be made well in advance; this process can take weeks or even months to complete so you mustn’t leave it too late. Of course, we will explore every alternative to prevent a court order having to be issued, and we are well equipped to

conduct negotiations between parents. So, even if all you need is a little professional advice to make the decision, we are here to help. To find out more about any legal matters concerning children, call your local branch and ask to speak to the family team. Ask the expert Annette Kerrigan, branch manager at Haybrook Crystal Peaks, offers her expert advice. Can investing in property get me a better return on my savings?

L

ow interest rates and a volatile stock market have led many people to consider investing their savings elsewhere – and buy-to-let property has become one of the most attractive prospects. Having slumped for years during the recession, the property market began to bounce back last year and, with this reinvigoration, came a new swathe of landlords looking to invest. But with so much information to take in, how do you navigate your way through the minefield of fees, rates, taxes and laws that will suddenly come to affect you? The most important action you can take is to seek professional advice at the very beginning. Property experts and all-ofmarket independent financial advisors can talk you through the entire process so you know where you stand, and what to expect, from the start. After George Osborne’s announcement in the summer budget of a new buy-to-let tax, which will affect landlords with mortgages, it is more important than ever to be clear on costs. These changes could mean that, by the time they come into effect in 2020, a property that would currently make a decent profit would actually be an unwise investment for the future. Expert advice isn’t the only benefit of getting an estate agent on board early. By registering your interest with a wellestablished agent, you will be kept up-to-date with new properties the moment they become available. This saves you the legwork of trawling online portals and ensures you’re at the front of the queue in what can be an incredibly fast-moving process. This ‘personal shopping’ service also ensures you are made aware of the right properties for your needs so you won’t waste time considering houses that wouldn’t be able to secure a return on your investment.

If you have a question for Annette on any aspect of the property market, email stephanie.burns@ regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will feature the answer in a future issue. To speak to the Haybrook Crystal Peaks team, call 0114 251 1710.

Staves have been offering a professional letting service at their Woodseats office for the last 6 years but is now extending this service to the White Lane branch. Managing Director Matt Staves comments: ‘The expansion of our lettings department to our prominent Gleadless office will enable us to provide a more personal, dedicated, hands on 1-2-1 service for landlords with properties to let within the S12, S13 and S20 areas. This will include offering complete continuity from initially marketing the property through to the day to day managing of the let. All of our properties to let are thoroughly marketed on all of the most prominent websites and are presented to the highest of standards using the best photography and engaging narrative. Just as importantly, our many years’ experience within the rental sector enables us to provide the best up to date advice and guidance to our landlords. potential pit falls. Here at Staves all of our staff are professionally trained and have all past The Guild of Estate Agents associate Letting Program’. Staves are keen to grow their portfolio within the S12, S13 and S20 areas and offer competitive rates for both let only and a fully managed services. Rent and legal protection can also be offered. Staves is the only Sheffield member of the prestigious Guild of Professional Estate Agents – a national network of leading independent estate agents all dedicated to maintaining the very highest standards in professionalism and customer service. The affiliation brings a number of marketing benefits including a fortnightly Ezine showcasing all available properties for sale and to let. Facebook users can also directly search Staves’ available properties through its page on the social media site. Additionally, Staves market all of their available properties on Rightmove.co.uk, onthemarket.com, guildproperty.co.uk and stavesestateagents.co.uk. that is handled is protected. Whilst client money protection is not yet compulsory for letting agents, it is certainly sound advice to use an agent that is registered in this way, thus guaranteeing safe handling of both landlord and tenant monies. Indeed advice from all recognised bodies is that using a letting agent providing client money protection should be essential. PROMOTIONREDBRIK ESTATE AGENTS

GOING PLACES

With Redbrik’s impressive turnaround times, there’s still time for you to buy, sell or let by the end of the year.

I

f moving house was on your list of things to do in 2015 and you still haven’t got round to putting your property on the market, Redbrik estate agency are advising that there is still time to sell or let and complete before the end of the year. Since opening their Crystal Peaks branch in April this year, Redbrik has gone from strength to strength and the company’s latest statistics prove how achievable a pre-Christmas move can be. Through Redbrik’s skilled negotiation, superb marketing and beautiful presentation, they understand how to get vendors the results they want. Across the three branches (Chesterfield, Crystal Peaks and Millhouses), Redbrik achieve 98.9 per cent of the asking prices and just over 70 per cent of their properties sell within four weeks. Similarly, once the sale is agreed they work hard to get it exchanged and completed as soon as possible. The average time from a property being sold subject to contract to exchanging contracts is just 8.5 weeks, which against the current industry average of 14-16 weeks, is superb. It is the same story with the company’s dedicated lettings service, which launched recently. They provide landlords and tenants with an experienced team that offers a personalised approach, outstanding customer service, the very best in marketing, stunning photography and skilled negotiation, as well as excellent communication between all parties. Every property Redbrik has marketed ‘To Let’ has been snapped up within 14 days – many have applications sooner, however Redbrik keep the property available until they have found their landlords the ‘right’ tenant for them. Peter Lee, who heads up Redbrik’s Crystal Peaks branch,

commented: “Last month was one of our busiest months across the business and it is certainly not showing any signs of slowing down. “There is still plenty of time to complete on properties ahead of the festive period – especially with our average 8.5 weeks completion time – which is significantly better than the current industry average of 14-16 weeks. “We are delighted with how well our Crystal Peaks office has been received and the positive feedback we get from our vendors, landlords and tenants alike is fabulous. “Speed and statistics are important, however, never at the expense of our service and what is right for our vendors and landlords. “In this competitive market place, we want to differentiate in ways that benefit the customer. Delivering outstanding service is what our customers value most and therefore it is integral to everything we do. “We are focussed on getting every client the best deal and just generally being nice people. We don’t work to targets, try to avoid jargon and aim to give the best possible advice tailored to each individual. Our knowledge, service and presentation get the results vendors and landlords deserve. “In lettings during September we have taken on more properties than any other month and clearly landlords are putting their trust in our service. It is great that so any of our current landlords are recommending us to other landlords. “The feedback that our service surpasses anything they have experienced before is really great to hear. “We are attracting numerous applications per property, which gives the landlord the choice to choose the tenant who is right for them. We recently had six applications for one property, which was only marketed for a week! “It is also very important to us that we have happy tenants. Looking after a tenant is just as essential as looking after a landlord. The happier the tenant the more they respect and look after a property and they will probably stay longer.” Call or email Redbrik for a free valuation. ‘FANTASTIC FROM START TO FINISH’ Landlord Jayne Jessop has been more than impressed with the lettings service offered by Redbrik.

W

hen it came to choosing a letting agent Jayne Jessop required an agent that would market her properties superbly and not just find any tenant but the right tenants. Jayne chose Redbrik. “My experience of Redbrik has been fantastic from start to finish. They have been friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. They know how the market works and exactly what landlords require. “I initially put one property on with them and as I have had such a good experience I have also chosen to use them again to market another one of my properties. “They have a fresh and pro-active approach to lettings and there is no hard sell whatsoever. “Anything I have asked Redbrik to do for me they have done straight away. I haven’t had to chase anything at all since I came on the market with them. “The most important thing for me was that Redbrik took multiple applications for my properties and I was able to choose the right tenants for me. “I would certainly recommend Redbrik – they have been an absolute pleasure to work with and I would use them again in the future.”

PROMOTIONUNDERWOOD’S BUTCHER’S SHOP

The team at the Eckington shop

Excellent service and a fantastic selection of meat and poultry make Underwood’s Butcher’s Shop a natural choice.

A

s the days get colder and darker, there’s nothing better than a wholesome hot meal filled with generous, juicy cuts of meat to look forward to. At the Underwood’s Butcher’s Shop on Eckington High Street you’ll find a great selection of high-quality, fresh meats at everyday good prices. Trading here for the past year, traditional butchery is key for this family-run business, combined with excellent customer service and a wide choice of fresh meat. Their Rotherham store opened in 2008, followed by the opening of the Dronfield Woodhouse store in 2012, before the Eckington store opened in 2014, and with the recent opening of their Barnsley branch this August, Underwood’s now has four shops, reaching more customers in the area than ever before. It really is worth a visit to see the full range of products on offer. Their range spans across many meats, including beef, lamb, pork and poultry – everything you would expect to see from a local retail butcher. If you don’t see something on display, just ask one of the skilled butchers who will happily prepare and hand-cut it to your preference. The shop also features a range of National Parks beef and lamb, sourced from Underwood’s own farm, based in the Peak

District – a really tasty and local seasonal treat. It doesn’t just stop there though; there’s a whole host of choices to tantalise your taste buds, from home-made black pudding to an expansive range of home-made, award-winning sausages. For those that can’t decide what to have, the Underwood’s family feast pack is available for just £19.99 and has everything you need to feed an average family for around a week. This includes 2lb beef stew, 2lb beef mince, five chicken fillets, five sirloin steaks and five gammon steaks. Make sure you also look out for their winter specials which will be announced in-store soon. If you just want a quick snack, they also have an extensive deli counter, which features a fine selection of fresh pies, pastries, cakes and hand-made sandwiches. The Underwood’s Butcher’s Shop also offers a privilege club savings scheme so customers can shop and save and be rewarded for their purchases; giving loyal customers even more savings. If you haven’t been already, it really is worth a visit to the Underwood’s Butcher’s Shop. There is ample parking right outside, so you can pop in and see for yourself the fine range of products on offer – the team will be only too pleased to welcome and look after you. IMAGEFEATURE

THE BOOK BRIGADE When Gleadless library was threatened with closure, volunteers stepped in. Phoebe Seymour finds out how they are safeguarding its future.

W

hen Sheffield’s libraries came under threat because of government funding cuts in 2013, it was down to a bunch of committed volunteers to ensure these much-loved local services did not vanish. We currently have 27 community libraries in Sheffield, 15 of which are run by local volunteers. And though their support and dedication continue, these libraries are still under the threat of closure. The new Gleadless Library and Community Hub on White Lane has recently celebrated its one year anniversary as a volunteer-run centre. “Two years ago, I found out that the library was going to close unless some volunteers came forward to run it,” says one of Gleadless’ founding volunteers Ann Bradbury. “Sheffield City Councillor Karen McGowan started us up and has been very supportive ever since.” And though Sheffield City Council is financially supporting the

IMAGEmagazine 34

library for its first three years, Ann admits the future is looking uncertain. “They’ve given us a grant for our first year, based on the former Gleadless Library running costs, but from April 2016, we will not be getting any more money upfront. We will be reimbursed, but we need to find ways to fund ourselves until then.” The library has already introduced some fundraising initiatives including raffle tickets, selling nearly new books and has raised an impressive £155 from the sale of their chocolate-filled knitted chicks for Easter, but with an estimated annual running cost of £16,000, they still have a way to go. Gleadless Library is therefore welcoming everyone in the area to their Christmas Fayre on Saturday 14 November from 2pm until 4pm. Entry is free and there will be a number of stalls to peruse such as crafts, toys and cakes, as well as nearly new books and clothes. And who knows, Father Christmas may also be making a visit closer to Christmas. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

034 - 035 Image Oct15_Layout 1 09/10/2015 13:22 Page 2

But it’s not just money that the library needs. Ultimately, it will be the local visitors and members that will ensure its survival. Ann’s husband and library volunteer Pete Bradbury said: “One of the biggest problems is that people don’t know we are here or they presume we are closed and those that do know we are here don’t always realise the number of services we provide.” “We changed our name to The New Gleadless Library and Community Hub because we do so much more,” adds Ann. As well as providing a wide selection of books with everything from adult fiction and children’s picture books, to standard novels and large print and audio books, the library has a number of PCs (which are always very busy) with access to the internet. There is a wealth of leaflets about services and events taking place in the area, comfy seating areas, coffee and tea facilities and a bright and cheerful seating area, where children can sit and read. As their new title suggests, the Community Hub is also a great place for a number of groups to meet up. The weekly Russian Speaking Group is fantastic for both native speakers and beginners wanting to learn the language, Monday’s Knit and Natter is a chance to do just that, whilst Time To Change, run by volunteer Kate Steel, not only supports local people, but aims to fight the stigma attached to mental health issues. A charity group working on behalf of a number organisations meets for coffee mornings on Wednesdays and even Charnock Hall Primary School has worked with the library. Ann is hopeful that Valley Park School will be visiting the library in the new year. It is also inspiring to hear that, even in a digital age, many children still visit and rely on libraries. The centre recently took part in a Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge, where children must read six books over the summer holidays. Over 100 local children took part and were awarded with certificates to say they had completed the challenge. The library is now welcoming the children of Gleadless to enter their latest colouring-in competition. The winner receives four tickets to take the whole family to Disney on Ice: Worlds of Enchantment live at the Sheffield Arena between 18 and 22 November. The competition closes on 31 October, so visit the library and pick up your colouring-in sheet today. Another thing many people probably don’t realise is that this local library is part of the central library in Sheffield city centre. You can therefore use the same card to take out up to 15 books for up to three weeks, any books you can’t find at Gleadless can be transferred from the central library and you can reserve and renew your books online at library.sheffield.gov.uk.

The New Gleadless Library & Community Hub is very much a place run by the community for the community and although there are as many as 25 volunteers running it, Pete insists there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes too. “There are a lot of man hours and we are not all available at the same time. It’s not just opening hours we need to cover. Just maintaining the building and enforcing health and safety can take time.” But although it is hard work, it can be very rewarding to see the difference the library is making. “It’s great to see parents and grandparents sitting in the library and reading to children,” says Pete. “It’s not just about the books; it’s about people having somewhere to come. The Wednesday Coffee Morning group have been coming here long before we took over. If we closed, these groups would have no where to go.” There’s something for everyone at The New Gleadless Library and Community Hub, so why not pick up a book or join in with a new activity today? Find out more by visiting www.gleadlesslibrary.org or The New Gleadless Library Facebook group. IMAGEHALLOWE’EN

SCARE TACTICS It’s the time of year when ghosts and ghouls set the shop tills ringing. Kate Preston-Hargraves reports.

M

uch like the English language and One Direction, Hallowe’en is one of those things that originated in Britain but has been claimed by the Americans as their own. The name Hallowe’en originally came from the name All Hallows Eve because November 1st was to be the Holy Saints’ Day. However, the traditions of Hallowe’en began in the festival of Samhain, which was part of the ancient Celtic religion of Britain and other parts of Europe. At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits was really thin. They thought that strange creatures with even stranger abilities could wander free. The Celts’ solution was to hold a big gathering to scare away these creatures from the other side. The modern tradition of Hallowe’en was barely acknowledged in the UK until recently, but our American cousins really embraced it. What we now know as Hallowe’en was believed to have started among Irish immigrants in the United States during the 19th century, but it was during the 20th centry that it became popular with the nation as a whole with traditions like trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving. Although the UK lags behind America when it comes to Hallowe’en, we are certainly catching up. Retail spending in the UK on Hallowe’en was an astounding £330 million in 2014 compared with only £12 million in 2001. The reason for this seems to lie with widespread marketing efforts by retailers and the continuous bombardment of American

IMAGEmagazine 36

films and television series like The Walking Dead and even, to an extent Twilight, which depict vampires of a less scary nature than we have been used to in the past. Britain’s large community of Americans has also helped popularize the holiday. However, even as it gets bigger in the UK, there is still one very important difference between the British and the American ways of celebrating. Americans seem to have lost the initial idea of scaring the creatures of the night away with even scarier costumes. Hallowe’en is used as an opportunity to simply dress up, be it as SpongeBob, Captain America or even a bunny rabbit. Meanwhile, their British counterparts stock up on fake blood, buy funky contact lenses that turn their eyes unnatural looking colours and rip up their old clothes in an attempt to look, I suppose, like a ghoul who has just been mugged. There is, however, still one very important similarity between the American way of celebrating and the British. And that is the fact that, at the end of the night when the smaller ghosts and spirits are tucked up in bed and the older ones are stumbling home, incapable of saying ‘Boo’ to a goose, it is clear to see that the spirit of Hallowe’en is undead and well.

‘Retail spending in the UK on Hallowe’en was an astounding £330 million in 2014 compared with only £12 million in 2001.’ www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

PROMOTIONBEST WESTERN PLUS ASTON HALL HOTEL

From weddings to corporate conferences and intimate dining, historic Aston Hall makes the perfect venue – whatever the function.

A

s you drive through beautiful grounds towards the historic building, BEST WESTERN PLUS Aston Hall Hotel will take your breath away. A grand building dating back to 1772, set in 55 acres of land, this independently-owned hotel is a stunning venue that can meet all your needs. Aston Hall caters for corporate and leisure guests, as well as attracting day visitors for a delicious meal, a quiet drink in the bar or a wander around the beautiful gardens. It has long been a beloved venue for couples tying the knot and the beautiful marquee makes Aston Hall stand out as one of the region’s premier wedding locations. The heated marquee can accommodate weddings all year round and is self-contained with its own bar, kitchen and toilets. With so much space, Aston Hall can comfortably accommodate two weddings a day – one in the marquee and one in the main building – each completely separate with their own facilities and gardens. And a lovely pagoda was recently installed in the gardens for outdoor weddings. Aston Hall has character in abundance and little quirks set it apart from other hotels. For example, the function rooms are named after Aston Martin cars and the bedrooms in the original part of the house are named after cutlery styles, as a nod to the region’s heritage. The largest function room is the Lagonda Suite, which can accommodate up to 300 people. Or for a more intimate affair, the Bamford Restaurant is cosy and serves delicious, homemade food. Vanquish is the most popular room, which is mainly used for private

dining. It used to be the old library and cupboards of books add to its charm. The function rooms can be used for a variety of events, including conferences, parties and wedding receptions and all are neutrally decorated. The oldest part of the hotel dates back to 1772 and still boasts an original mosaic floor at the entrance. With an intriguing history that includes visits from Lord Byron and a spell as a psychiatric hospital, the old building is a real treasure. Extensions were added in 2007 and 2008 and the hotel now boasts 52 bedrooms in total. Two luxury bedrooms are popular with newlyweds – Tang is a grand, French-themed bedroom, while Jazz is a modern, masculine room. All the bedrooms in the old house are individually designed with different layouts, styles and colour schemes, although they all boast high ceilings and large windows. Alternatively, the new west wing is popular with corporate guests as it offers spacious and comfortable hotel bedrooms perfect for the corporate market, as well as top-of-the-range conference facilities. There is also a gym and WiFi included in the price. For additional privacy, Darcy House is situated in the hotel grounds and is very popular with bridal parties. The modern six-bedroom house (which used to be the hall’s orangery) boasts a glass ceiling, so you can sleep under the stars. Unsurprisingly, Christmas is the busiest time at Aston Hall and they are almost fully booked. However, there are still a few spaces available for their themed party nights on 10, 16, 17 December (70s/80s/90s/2000s), as well as Boxing Day lunch. There are also a few places available for Countdown to Christmas, on 29 November, with a three-course meal and a DJ. Or secure one of the last slots for a six-course dinner and disco on New Year’s Eve. Aston Hall Hotel will also be hosting an open wedding weekend on 16-17 January 2016, when you can see all that the venue has to offer and meet the talented team of wedding co-ordinators. Words: Phoebe Seymour

THE WHOLE PACKAGE

Drink, dance and dine... Cubana offers the ultimate night out. f there’s one thing Cuba knows best, it’s how to throw a good party. Home to salsa dancing, rum and a cultural fusion of cuisines, the best of this nation is all under one roof – in Sheffield. My last trip to Cubana was when it was still on Trippet Lane, so I was excited to sample the tapas and cocktails at their relatively new home in Leopold Square. Cubana has been at this stylish location for almost a year and if the busy downstairs bar and booked-up restaurant upstairs are anything to go by, the move has been a raving success. Absorbing the colourful, courtyard-style setting, my partner and I got our Friday fiesta started with a Brazilian Mojito, made with sugarcane spirit cachaça instead of rum, and a Verry Berry Jerry cocktail, made with Sailor Jerry and fruity Chambord. The tapas menu had a guide for helping you decide how many dishes to go for. Deciding we were “hungry” on the scale, we went with four each. After sharing a Pan de Ajo Calentito (garlic bread), I tucked into the Gambas Pil Pil (prawns in garlic and olive oil), Patatas Dulces y Pimientos (roasted sweet potatoes and red peppers), Pincho Verduras (grilled Mediterranean vegetable skewer) and the Chorizo y Huevo con Patatas (chorizo and potatoes topped with a fried egg). Try saying all that after a few cocktails! The prawns were juicy with a buttery flavour, whilst my mountain of sweet potatoes was balanced by spicy chilli. The marinated vegetable skewer, including blackened aubergines and courgettes, had

I

IMAGEmagazine 46

a lemony tang, whilst the chorizo and potatoes dipped in the fried egg reminded me of a fried breakfast with a Spanish twist. All together, this was an exciting and varied feast full of many flavours. My partner had the Mozzarella y Jamón (buffalo mozzarella wrapped in Parma ham), Salteado de Champiñones al Ajillo (sautéed mixed mushrooms with garlic and chilli), Pincho de Pollo (grilled chicken skewer) and the Pollo y Chorizo (chicken and chorizo in a creamy tomato sauce). He especially enjoyed the mascarponestyle sauce on his chicken and chorizo and the portions of mozzarella wrapped in ham, comparing them to “cheese-filled pigs in blankets”. I had a mouthful of the chicken skewer, which was barbecued to perfection. My partner had the raspberry cheesecake to finish – a great recommendation by our waiter Stuart – whilst I had the decadent chocolate cake with moist layers of chocolate and fudge. My partner washed this down with a Brazilian liqueur coffee with kahlua and fiery brandy, whilst I had the smoother Cuban liqueur coffee with dark rum. By this point, a man was serenading diners with his saxophone and the party was just getting started downstairs with people swaying to traditional salsa and Latino club tunes. Owner Adrian’s ethos is “about providing the whole package when it comes to a night out”. With a gorgeous menu, exciting cocktails and regular live music events, Cubana sure does deliver.

IMAGEWHAT’S HAPPENING?

City recognises Peter’s 25 years of selfless service For more than 25 years, local photographer Peter Wolstenholme’s photographic skills, record keeping, and regular publication of his images have been of invaluable benefit to many local community groups, schools, businesses, individuals, voluntary sector groups and public sector organisations. He has also been a regular contributor to this page, sending in pictures of events that take place in our region. We were thrilled to hear that Peter had been presented with a special award from the City of Sheffield by MP Clive Betts in recognition and appreciation of Peter’s unique and exceptional voluntary service. More than 50 people representing some of the groups and organisations that Peter has supported attended the event at Woodhouse Library. Peter, who lives in Woodhouse and will be 80 later this year, became the Shire Brook Valley Publicity Officer in 1990 and began regularly photographing community-based events and activities in the area. His role gradually extended to South East Sheffield and thousands of people have since benefited from his photographic record, which conservative estimates suggest are well over one

million images. Peter once said: Peter (left) receives his award from Clive Betts “This volunteer photography is time consuming but I feel worthwhile because it is tomorrow's history.” In 2008, Peter was invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace and he had the opportunity to chat to the Queen about his work. Many in the local community also felt that the value of Peter’s work should also be recognised in Sheffield. The award came as a complete surprise to Peter, who had attended the event thinking that he was the official photographer as usual. In his speech, Clive Betts described Peter as ‘a legend in his own lifetime’. We couldn’t agree more.

Everything you ever wanted to know about stage schools Pat Davison, principal at Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Beighton, explains: Who sends their child to stage school? We get a really wide range of youngsters. Some have parents who see their talent at singing, dancing or acting. Other parents want to see their children grow in confidence. We also have people who are referred by teachers, and parents of shy children. We welcome them all. What do children get from attending a stage school? Training in the performing arts, and usually chances to perform. They also make friendships with children who have similar interests and are from outside their normal environment. If they’ve had a hard week at school, it can be a real escape. Is stage school quite expensive? Not when you compare it to musical tuition. Stagecoach works out about £9 per hour, although each school will have their own arrangements. With some dance schools you may have to add in the costs of extra rehearsals and costumes for shows. Why should children do exams? In my view it gives parents an independent measure of how good the tuition is in the school, which is quite reassuring. They also demonstrate the progress the children are making. If your child can earn a merit or distinction in a recognised exam, it looks great on their CV.

Pianist Robert raises £3,200 for charity Local pianist Robert Wolstenholme (left) raised more than £500 for the National Autistic Society when he entertained shoppers at Crystal Peaks shopping mall with more than five hours of music. Robert, 17, from Dronfield, is himself autistic and the Netherthorpe School sixth former has now raised a total of £3,200 for the charity with his popular series of marathon music sessions at the shopping centre where he plays more than 50 different pieces. IMAGEMOTORING

Stiff competition Since the launch of the new C63 saloon and estate earlier on in the year there hasn’t been an all-new coupe version – Mercedes-Benz were still selling the previous generation model – until now. The coupe is wider than the saloon and has a longer bonnet meaning it’s a more striking proposition on the road. It’s very much a good looking car as it takes styling cues from the SClass coupe. Like the saloon and estate models, it’s powered by the same 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 found in the AMG GT supercar, only here power is 476hp or 510hp in the C63 S. This gives 0-62mph times of 4.0 and 3.9 seconds respectfively with a 155mph top speed (limited). The BMW M4 now has some seriously stiff competition.

There’s some seriously good-looking new models hitting the roads, Jordan Cutforth picks out some of the most attractive. It’s what’s on the inside that counts

Pick-up line VW have announced a new special edition of their VW Amarok pick-up truck. Priced from £32,220 and only available from VW’s van centre network, this special edition will come with a 178hp 2.0-litre BiTDI engine with the choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox which comes with selectable 4MOTION four-wheel drive or a eight-speed automatic with permanent four-wheel drive as standard. It’ll get bi-xenon headlamps, black rear styling bars, 19-inch ‘Cantera’ alloys, a new protective coating for the load bay and some ‘Atacama’ side decals. Inside you’ll be greeted by Vienna leather upholstery, a newly designed steering wheel, Bluetooth, airconditioning and satellite navigation which all come as standard. The Amarok Atacama is available now but only 500 examples will ever be built for UK customers.

The Subaru Levorg Sport Tourer is a replacement for the highly regarded Subaru Legacy Tourer. As standard, each model will gain the companies iconic all-wheel drive system made famous by those insane rally cars of the past. Subaru says the Levorg Sport Tourer has the best interior they have ever fitted to car in terms of materials used and the available standard equipment which includes the likes of leather trimmed sport seats and a new seven-inch touchscreen with navigation and communication systems built in. From its September launch, only a 168hp 1.6-litre DIT power unit will be available which produces 40mpg and achieves a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds. Boot space equates to 552-litres with seats in place and 1,446-litres with them folded. Priced at £27,495.

Jaguar unleashes the new XF The all-new Jaguar XF is certainly a very distinctive car. It’s certainly the best looking in the premium executive saloon market. Jaguar has gone away with the wood and leather ambiance of old, instead they’ve brought elegant and crisp modernism to the proceedings with a gloss black swooping centre console and a huge colour touchscreen to minimise the number of apparent dashboard buttons. It comes with a great array of engines which range from 71mpg diesels to 375hp supercharged V6 powerhouses – the same unit found in the F-Type. Interior space has improved over the old car and the new suspension set-up and 80kg weight saving has made the XF as fun to drive as the BMW 5-Series. Available to order now. Priced from £32,300.
