Jeff Knibb, head of personal injury at Wosskow Brown, discusses the legal minefield of driverless cars. ou may think this is the perfect time of year for personal injury lawyers to be warning drivers about the perils of bad weather, dark nights and soggy autumn leaves. You’d be right, of course. We all need to be more careful as those balmy summer evenings give way to altogether more treacherous driving conditions. But while Wosskow Brown’s personal injury department will no doubt be inundated with road traffic accident (RTA) claims in the coming months, they will also be turning their attentions to a more futuristic issue. Like smart phones, WiFi and sat nav, we’ll soon wonder how we ever coped without driverless cars. They may seem years away from being regular features of our roads, but the UK government has already pledged £19million for self-driving car research, and the first prototypes are due to be tested here imminently. They’ll be here before we know it – and with them will come a new legal minefield. Jeff explains: “Insurance companies often drag their feet even when there is an obvious party to blame, so when driverless cars are introduced, the situation will be significantly more difficult to navigate.” The first injury-causing accident involving a driverless car has already occurred. This summer, in Google’s home city of Mountain View, California, someone drove into the back of

one of their driverless test vehicles. It seems human error, for now at least, is still the most likely cause of RTAs. But Wosskow Brown is already planning for what will undoubtedly become one of the trickier legal issues of modern times. As with every personal injury claim they process, they will use their long-established expertise to maximise the reward their clients are entitled to. So while you can’t realistically expect to be a passenger in your own car until at least 2030 – according to official estimates – you can rest assured that Wosskow Brown will be ready and waiting to take on the relevant claims when the time does come. In the meantime, of course, they’re on hand to help you with more pressing matters. Hair and Make-Up This wedding season it’s all about the traditional look. The classic sleek and simple hairstyle will always impress, especially if you intend it to be an up-do. Tidy buns with a front-centre parting is a perfect example of this, or, if you’re looking for a twist on the classic style, try a side parting with a twisted French braid leading into a bun. To make it a bit more glamorous, add some sparkles with

glitter or a glittering headband to match your dress. If you wear your hair down, loose ringlets are wonderfully elegant. Pin top sections to the crown and leave a few curls out to beautifully frame your face. For those looking for a more relaxed, woodland look, slipping a garland of flowers on your head for the big day will always be a winner. If you are a believer that less is more when it comes to makeup, subtler colours are for you. Light mascara, a dab of blusher and a

subtle flick of eyeliner will emphasise your eyes without being too obvious. A girly pink, or a neutral peach, for your lip colour also adds to an understated look. However, if you prefer a fuller coverage, darker colours, such as tones of olive, brown and black can be used on eyes with eye liner and mascara to create that feline look. If you’re going for a bold lip to match your eyes, a strong wine or rouge red is the perfect choice.

The Flowers When it comes to the flowers, try to avoid foliage and exposed stems – you don’t want pollen all over everything. Instead, if you’re looking for more subtle colours, without the risk of pollen and staining, choose romantic blooms like orchids, hydrangeas and hyacinths in creamy, low-key colours. However, the justgathered-from-the-garden look has been popular with brides recently, and this trend doesn’t look like it is going anywhere anytime soon. Go with this theme if you’re looking for something a bit more edgy. Try ferns, blowsy roses, even acorns. Perfect for a wild touch against the sophisticated background.

The Entertainment Entertainment is important when it comes to the big day, but, don’t worry, you don't need to go all out. Ask around for recommendations and go with what ideas that were enjoyed at weddings you have been to. But remember, it’s your special day, so opt for something you will enjoy and, if you're happy and having fun, your guests will follow suit. If you want a classic, sophisticated look, you could go for a string quartet, which would create a calm feeling to your wedding breakfast and reception. There is also the traditional wedding disco to think about for the celebrations later on. If you want something a little unconventional, why not hire a ceilidh band, which will get everyone on their feet learning new dances. What better way to end your special day than with all your friends and relatives dancing together?

The Cake When choosing the cake, matching it up with the season will always be a crowd pleaser. Fruitcake, or hazelnut flavourings for autumn weddings with elaborate decorations are always popular, as is a chocolate or praline cake with typical royal icing, or white-on-white for winter. On the hunt for bats Chris Sims from Sheffield City Council’s ecology unit led an evening bat walk round Heathlands Park and Holbrook. The event was organised by the Sheffield Landscape Trust in conjunction with Parks & Countryside. The sound emitted by bats is outside human hearing frequencies so the people attending the walk were loaned ‘bat detectors. These instruments were tuned to bat frequencies and produced loud clicks when hunting bats were in the area. Eve’s a Night Strider When Helen Fisher lost her battle against cancer in July, Eve Garrett knew she had to do something to celebrate her best friend’s life. There’s no denying the outstanding achievements the pupils and staff at Outwood Academy City have accomplished over the last two years. The 2015 GCSE results are remarkable, with an impressive 68 per cent of students achieving five grades A*-C including English and maths – a 25 per cent increase since the Academy conversion in January 2014, and up 13 per cent from last year. Academy Business Manager Jane Jones, says results day was incredibly emotional, but for all the right reasons. “Everyone worked exceptionally hard and the results really speak for themselves, we’re delighted.” To put that into perspective – the school has moved from 23rd out of 25 schools to fourth position, and is now one of the top five schools in Sheffield. Academy Principal Richard Brooke says: “Our record-breaking results this year are a testament to the hard work and collaboration of our students, staff and supportive parents, and we are in a strong position to continue improving, to create the best opportunities for every student that attends our Academy.” Although the Academy has a keen eye on academic success, this is by no means the only focus. Students are challenged to take part in activities; completing pledges, these include a residential outward-bound experience paid for by the Academy. The timetable at Outwood Academy City starts at 8.25am and finishes at 2.30pm, which allows plenty of time for an hour’s enrichment activity at the end of the day. There is a huge selection on offer, from sports such as badminton and trampolining, to journalism and a ukulele club. For those with a flair for creativity there are plenty of opportunities to showcase their talents, with shows like last year’s We Will Rock You, which was a sell-out over the three nights it ran. On Tuesday 22 September 2015, from 5-7.30pm, Outwood Academy City will host their Year 6 open evening. Prospective

students and parents can explore the Academy’s facilities and see for themselves what is on offer. Presentations by Richard will give you a real flavour of life at the Academy and each department will host their own fun activities too, with staff available to answer questions. The Academy are so confident in the quality of the education they have that they have an open-door policy and are happy to show potential students and their parents/carers around during the school day. You can visit subject areas and enjoy a lunch with students. Outwood Academy City are keen for potential students to see the Academy as it is each and every day, which gives them the opportunity to showcase their inspirational teaching and learning. Every single parent who has visited during a normal Academy day has enrolled their child, which is testament to the friendly atmosphere and welcoming attitudes of staff and pupils alike.
