Action-packed weekend
MARK THE WEEKEND OF 1-3 SEPTEMBER IN YOUR DIARY... CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR RETURNS WITH DANCING DIGGERS, TROOPERS, CELEBRITY CHEFS AND FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.
he Chatsworth Country Fair is one of England’s most spectacular events and returns this year on 1-3 September.
Held in the 1,000-acre parkland surrounding Chatsworth House, tens of thousands of visitors will enjoy three
action-packed days of Grand Ring entertainment, cooking masterclasses, delicious food, fantastic shopping and plenty of ‘have-a-go’ activities. There’s all this plus a vintage fun fair, children’s climbing wall, bungee trampoline and more.
As always there’s a not-to-be-missed Grand Ring programme that’s always guaranteed to thrill, with stunt teams, dog racing and military bands.
Confirmed attendees this year include the The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery Musical Ride; these are the

ceremonial teams that you see involved in duties such as the Coronation and will be showcasing their speed and skills while performing intricate and close manoeuvres.
Also appearing in the Grand Ring will be the JCB diggers, who will be dancing for a packed crowd. A down-to-earth version of the Red Arrows, these mechanical monsters perform in an elegant display.
The Mounted Games will be taking place over the weekend and will include Allcomer’s Dog Racing, with Madcap capers with Rob Richardson and his Ginger Ninjas, all in pursuit of ‘Woger the Wabbit’; Falconry demonstrations; British Scurry and trials driving; and the dog, duck and sheep show.
Across in the food village will be celebrity chefs including James Martin,
Mary Berry and Matt Tebbutt as well as local cooks and producers such as Adam Thackeray and Max Fischer, Chris Mapp, Eva Humphries, Mark Aisthorpe, Ray Moody and Tim Sidaway.
Children are well catered for at Chatsworth Country Fair and can choose from activities including Banana brain fun shows with face painting (from 11am-4pm), exotic animal encounters, Pony rides from Brimington Equestrian Centre, mini Land Rovers and an ‘off-road’ course, bouncy castle, bumper boats and cars, low ropes and target golf.
And don’t miss the hot air balloons, which will be taking to the skies each evening in what is one of the largest ballooning events in the UK after Bristol. There will also be demonstrations of how to inflate a balloon in the Grand Ring.
Ticket information:
Day tickets are priced from £28.50 for adults (children under 15 are free) and can be bought on the day, whilst two and three-day tickets must be bought in advance and are priced from £45.50 and £68 respectively.

Offering:
Crowd-pleaser
It’s been two years now since The George was relaunched by Longbow Bars & Restaurants and despite having lost its ‘newness’, the Hathersage pub feels very much part of the community and has become the goto venue for food, drink and family celebrations.
Rob Hattersley and his team completely modernised the 500-year-old building, which was once frequented by Charlotte Brönte, creating a stylish and comfortable pub, restaurant and hotel. One of the more recent additions is an extensive outdoor terrace, perfect for when the sun pokes its head through the clouds.
The dining room overlooks this terrace and is a bright, airy space in which to sample The George’s foodie delights –and there are many.
The menu has something for everyone with plenty of crowd-pleasers including pizza (made in a wood-fired oven), burgers, fish ‘n’ chips and homemade pie of the day. There’s also what you’d perhaps describe as more ‘gastro-style’ dishes and it was here that we took inspiration for a pleasant summer’s day lunch.
I started with an onion bhaji-inspired scotch egg, which was served with homemade mango chutney (£9.50).
Perfectly cooked (the yolk was runny), this was a hearty introduction to our meal and had those subtle Indian flavours that are so familiar. Across the table my wife tucked into a goats’ cheese and pomegranate croquette served with tomato jam, sweety drop peppers and rocket salad (£8.95).
Both dishes paired well with glasses of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Ancora (£7.50, 250ml) and Pinot Grigio Rosato Ancora (£7.50, 250ml), both supplied by Hattersley Wines of Bakewell.
Much of the produce at The George is sourced locally and this provenance is outlined on the menu. Meat comes from New Close Farm in Haddon, fish from RG Morris & Son in Buxton and fruit and veg from Winsters in Chesterfield, for example.
Our mains continued the high standards and my wife’s sage and chorizo stuffed pork fillet wrapped in pancetta, with sauteed greens, mashed potato, creamy sage and chorizo sauce (£20.95) wouldn’t have looked out of place on any restaurant table. It’s a dish that has been on The George’s menu and had become something of a signature dish.
My BBQ beef short rib (£22.50) was meaty, as you’d expect, and well complemented by the accompanying grilled corn on the cob, coleslaw and
skinny fries.
We’d still got room for dessert and The George Gourmand (£11.95) is a great way to sample a smaller selection of the desserts on offer and is served with a generous shot of espresso. I tried a slither of lemon tart, chocolate brownie, meringue, coconut ball and scoops of raspberry and mango sorbets. It was delicious.
My wife opted for the much heartier portion of the homemade lemon tart served with crushed meringue, pistachio ice cream and strawberry coulis (£8.95).
Children are well catered for at The George too and my two children tucked into dishes of margherita pizza (£4.50) and burger and fries (£7.95).
It may have plenty of history but this is definitely a pub for the modern day.

CHOOSE YOUR WINNER OF THE WESTSIDE READERS’ CHOICE AWARD... FIND OUT HOW BELOW.
The Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards returns this October –and we need your help in choosing a winner.
The Westside Readers’ Choice Award 2023 let’s you have your say. Whether you select your favourite local café, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. 2022’s winner was The Wortley Arms, a gastro pub in the north of Sheffield.
To vote, go online to www.rmcmedia/events, or scan the QR code below with your smartphone, to let us know where you enjoy eating out most. All entries must include a home address and contact details, only one entry per email address is allowed. The closing date for entries is 13 October 2023.
This year’s event, which takes place at the OEC on Monday 30 October, will be the third year running we have held the event here and if the previous two years are anything to go by, 2023’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multipurpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
When it came to the 2022 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by I Grunwerg Ltd, competition was keen. The top prize went to Rafters, a small but stunning restaurant on Oakbrook Road that just seems to get better and better. The 3 AA rosette restaurant, owned by Alistair Myers and Tom Lawson, flies the flag for fine dining in the city and we loved everything about it - the food, the wine, the service and the overall attention to detail. It’s just a lovely experience and well deserving of our flagship award. Judging by the huge round of applause that greeted the announcement - made
by our compere Chris Wilson, the former managing editor of RMC Media – it was a popular choice and welldeserved.
Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp.

DELYSE HUMPHREYS RECENTLY CELEBRATED HER 86TH BIRTHDAY AT A SURPRISE PARTY AT THE MAYNARD. HERE, SHE SPEAKS TO RICHARD ABBEY ABOUT HER TRANSITION FROM MODEL TO BUSINESSWOMAN AND MORE.
When Delyse Humphreys looks back over her life and career, she does so with a feeling of pride. For the Sheffield supermodel turned successful businesswoman helped to launch the careers of hundreds of girls through her modelling and casting agency, Style.
She is held in such high esteem by her prodigies that many of them turned up to a surprise party to celebrate her recent 86th birthday at The Maynard, Grindleford.
“I thought it was just going to be a small lunch for half a dozen of us but it snowballed,” recalls Delyse, who found herself in the company of over 30 guests.
“Justine Woolley and Tracey Harrison organised the party for me, along with Jo Hill and Alison Slack, now Singleton,” said Delyse. “I’ve always kept in touch with them and they still phone me for
advice. It was lovely to see them all.”
No doubt the afternoon was spent recalling tales – glamorous and otherwise – of Style and for Delyse, a modelling career which began back in the 1950s.
Delyse was born in Sheffield in 1937 and grew up on Lansdowne Road, attending school on Sharrow Lane. As a teenager she had ambitions of taking part in beauty competitions and although encouraged by her parents, her dad insisted that she get a ‘proper job’ first.
“I thought that was boring but [dad] made me go to business school and I ended up getting a job there,” stated Delyse. “I did two days, two nights for two years and did shorthand, typing and bookkeeping so I knew about business.”
Delyse would call on these valuable skills much later but fulfilled her dream of becoming a model, taking part in beauty competitions and doing
promotions work. She got a job working in the office and as a model for Aquapoise swimwear, based in Hillsborough, who also used her for the basis for their swimwear designs.
“I was the standard size 12,” said Delyse. “I was 34-24-36, I always remember that.”
Brushes with fame were all part and parcel of Delyse’s early career, the highlight of which was auditioning for the role of Tatiana Romanova in the 1963 James Bond film, From Russia With Love. She didn’t get the part (that went to Daniela Bianchi) or get to meet Sean Connery but it was an experience she cherished.
She did eventually make it on to the silver screen, appearing in the 1969 Ken Russell film, Women in Love, alongside Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson.

wasn’t really something Delyse had considered but came into being after a chance meeting.
“It was a friend called Barry Bronks,” said Delyse. “I’d worked with him on promotions and he rang me up one day and said ‘come and see me, I’ve got a job for you’.
“It turned out the job wasn’t for me but he needed promotions girls, front of house, that kind of thing. I wasn’t an agency but I said I’d find him three or four girls. He then said, ‘by the way, what are you doing for the rest of your life?’
“I laughed. He said ‘I’m serious. I hate to see talent wasted’. So I said, ‘what do you want me to do?’.
“He asked me lots of questions, took notes on a big sheet of foolscap paper and at the end of it said, ‘I’ll tell you what you’re doing. You’re going to open an agency and you’re going to call it Style’.”
The rest is history.
Delyse went out looking for property and found a place on the corner of London Road and Broadfield Road, which became Style by Delyse Humphreys. She bought the building
after three or four years and completely renovated it.
“It had mirrors from floor to ceiling all down one wall,” she recalled. “I was able to point out what [the girls] were doing wrong and what they were doing right. I taught deportment and balance, makeup, hair… Unlike today where we’ve got makeup artists, hairdressers and all those sorts of people, you didn’t have them then unless it was a big fashion shoot.”
Some of Delyse’s girls went on to have fantastic, high-profile careers with the ones sticking in her mind being Justine Woolley and Michelle Behennah.
Party-organiser and close friend Justine had been with Delyse since the age of 14 and had a career that took her to Hamburg, Milan and Paris. Michelle was sent to Models One in London and from there she went to New York to sign with Ford, eventually appearing on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Sports Illustrated magazines amongst many others.
Of course there are many more success stories which is testament to the positive
influence Delyse had on so many girls’ careers and lives. It’s something she remains fiercely proud of.
“I don’t want to be conceited about it, I’m just pleased the girls have done so well,” she said. “I’m really proud of them all. It’s not just about modelling, it’s about learning life skills as well. I was tough on them, I made them work hard, but I like to think I made a difference.”
Given the reception she received at her birthday party, and the successful careers she helped to curate, I think you can

LEN AYLING CREATES DRAMATIC CANVAS PAINTINGS INPIRED BY NATURE.
any of us took up new hobbies during the pandemic, forced or otherwise, and while a lot of these quickly became passing fads, for some of us they have become lasting obsessions.
It was during this time that Len Ayling, who lives in Killamarsh, saw an advert for ‘Paint by Numbers’ kits. He was intrigued by the ones with jungle animals, often depicted in the wild but after painting a few of these, he decided to try freehand and so purchased canvas and paints.
Friends bought him gifts of paints and brushes and one suggested he watch YouTube instructional videos. Earlier attempts of flowers and landscapes were admired, but the learning had only just begun.
Len, who has been unable to mobilise for several years without a frame, has to do muscle exercises every day for
extremely weak hamstrings and quadriceps and still experiences pain. His wife, Patricia, and his son in Australia are guilty of bullying him to keep moving, but he can spend many absorbing hours in front of a canvas.
Over time he has discovered a plethora of different paints such as iridescent, special brushes in various shapes and sizes (solid, flimsy and fan-like) and tools, such as sponges and palette knives. The medium he uses is acrylic. The overarching skill however is technique and this has to evolve through trial and error; the use of colour and blending particularly important.
For inspiration Len has gazed at pink and purple swirling skies over Killamarsh or spotted a mysterious or magical element in a photo Patricia has taken in an early evening walk along the lakes at Rother Valley Country Park. Early morning gives a glint to water whereas
the evenings give a soft hue.
When Patricia returns home, she sets him the challenge of representing this. Perception of a bright day (when we actually get one), or a view which requires a dramatic sky over a dark silhouette, requires different colours, blending and technique. Depth and the acknowledgement of movement are among the challenges.
One viewer was astonished at the way Len had captured the translucency of the water in ‘The Wave’. Another said they gasped in anticipation of the ‘crash’.
Reading or listening to comments has revealed that paintings really do evoke emotions. The journey from real life images such as those scenes beautifully painted by Constable for instance.
Len continues to paint, proving his hobby has become much more than a passing fad.

For the final event of this year, which runs from 9am to 4pm in the Crystal Peaks central atrium, there will be a range of around 40 different stalls on offer.
“We have been consistently overwhelmed by the public response to the Peaks Uniques concept and 2023 has been our most successful season yet,” said centre manager Lee Greenwood. “The emphasis with Peaks Uniques is on the unique, bespoke, quirky and interesting - the sort of products that differ from what we already offer in our stores and existing marketplace.
“This will be the final event of the year and comes just as people are starting to think about Christmas shopping so we are sure they will able to spot some unusual gift ideas.”

Oakstock gives a boost to hospice
Two days of music and family fun raised more than £300 for St Luke’s Hospice as Oakstock returned to Mosborough. The popular music festival at the British Oak pub featured a lineup of live bands, bars, ice cream, children’s entertainment, glitter painting and food stalls,
And by the time the two-day celebration was over, the event had raised £341 for St Luke’s.
“This was a real community event and we are so pleased that the organisers chose St Luke’s as their charity,” said St Luke’s Community Fundraiser Ellie Matthews. “We’d like to say thank you to all the people who made Oakstock such a great success.
“The money they raised will go directly to ensuring that we can continue to provide our excellent levels of care for all St Luke’s patients and their families.”
Mike throws himself into fundraising challenge
You could say that Mike Lancaster is really throwing himself into volunteering for St Luke’s Hospice. For when he’s not giving time to the St Luke’s Woodseats shop, he is preparing to take the plunge and join the charity’s September abseil!
Semi-retired wedding celebrant Mike, who is 57 and lives in Gleadless, decided to support St Luke’s as a tribute to mumin-law Eunice Fisher, who was a patient at the hospice.
“I felt I could be doing something useful and I thought of St Luke’s because it is a local charity and also because my wife’s mum was looked after by St Luke’s more than 20 years ago,” Mike explained. “I have always remembered how brilliant they were, they were just incredible and I have always had enormous admiration for them since then.”
Mike volunteers at the St Luke’s Woodseats shop every Tuesday morning. Now, though, he is taking his support a step further, signing up to take part in the St Luke’s abseil, which will be held at Sheffield Hallam University’s Owen Building on Saturday 30 September.
Participants in the event pay a registration fee of £23 and are then asked to raise £230 in sponsorship.

Go big or go home
After turning their attention to the hatchback market in recent years, Renault have now switched their focus to large cars with the launch of the Rafale.
The all-new Renault Rafale is the first production vehicle entirely designed according to the new visual language that Gilles Vidal has brought in as Head of Design Renault. It is visionary, daring, perfectly in tune with its time and tailor-made for a period when everything is moving ever faster.
The car also features up-to-the-minute connectivity and a 200hp E-Tech full hybrid powertrain that is as efficient as it is frugal and uses recycled materials.
The all-new Renault Rafale is an advanced coupe SUV, it looks as vibrant as it feels when you drive it, and it is an opportunity to share an intense driving experience with friends or children – however grownup they may be.
The all-new Renault Rafale 200 hp E-Tech full hybrid will reach markets in spring 2024.
Magnificent seven
Kia UK has revealed pricing and specifications for the all-new Kia EV9, the brand’s new flagship three-row electric SUV.
Kia will offer three grades to EV9 buyers in the UK: ‘Air’, ‘GT-Line’ and ‘GT-Line S’, each with a three-row, seven-seat layout as standard. All three models offer a 99.8 kWh long-range battery pack with heat pump, and with it the ability to drive up to more than 300 miles from a single charge. Kia’s 800V ultra-fast charging technology means every version of the EV9 can be recharged from 10-to-80 per cent in as little as 24 minutes when plugged into a 350kW high-powered charger.
The first UK customer deliveries of the EV9 ‘GT-Line S’ will start from January 2024, with ‘Air’ and ‘GT-Line’ models due to follow later on. Prices start from £64,995.
Shaped by desire
Mercedes-Benz is continuing its long tradition of sporty, elegant dream cars with a new, independent series. The new CLE Coupé uses the conceptual and technical innovations of the C-Class and E-Class. With its expressive design, exclusive comfort equipment for maximum individuality and confident, sporty driving performance, the new two-door car goes its own way.
The new CLE Coupé sets standards in efficiency thanks to systematic electrification and intelligent downsizing. All engines are mild hybrids with an integrated starter generator and 48-volt electrical system. There is a choice of four-cylinder units and – as the most powerful engine – a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine.
High performance
The latest generation BMW M2 raises the bar in the high-performance premium compact segment. The new car builds on its formidable predecessor’s strengths to deliver an even greater driving experience, taking the formula of a classic high-performance sports car and reproducing it in highly concentrated form with cutting-edge technology.
The new BMW M2 encapsulates the pure joy of driving: its compact dimensions, a six-cylinder in-line engine, a manual gearbox option, rear-wheel drive and an advanced control/operating concept – allowing the driver to adjust the vehicle setup as desired – are all central to its appeal.
With a maximum output of 460hp – 90hp more than the original BMW M2 – and exhilarating driving dynamics that have been honed during in-depth testing on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit and other race tracks, the new BMW M2 represents another highlight in the model offensive celebrating the 50-year anniversary of BMW M GmbH. Priced from £64,890 OTR.
