Alpine delight BY AARON MARSHALL, HORTICULURIST, RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR. have always had a particular interest in Alpines, which perhaps started during my studies in Edinburgh. I couldn’t wait to get out of the library and into the Alpine House, where you could get up really close and focus in on these fascinating plants and the way they almost glitter in the sunlight. I’ve since been fortunate to specialise in Alpines at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, where we have an Alpine House, home to more than 2,000 plants, all native to mountainous regions from around the world. The beds are made of rock re-used from a previous sandstone rock garden, providing a base for yearround interest and plants with an array of sculptural shapes, attractive foliage and beautiful flowers. Some of my favourite Alpines have to be the Primula allionii. We must have more than 50 specimens in the garden and over 30 different varieties which start to flower in mid-February, but really look their best in March. Although they generally come in shades of white and pink, I particularly like ‘Tranquillity’ the petals of which have an almost faint hue of blue. Another favourite is ‘Aire Mist’ with its wonderfully delicate pure white flowers. Primula allionii are not too hard to grow, but they must be grown under glass, otherwise the rain will damage the delicate flowers. It’s a good idea to add dolodust, a fine powdered lime to the soil, to recreate the conditions of the lime cliffs where the plants originate. However, try to avoid getting soil on the leaves, as they are so sticky, it makes it very difficult to get off! A lean compost will help create tight, solid cushions, but be careful not to overfeed or they will grow too fast, too quickly. If you like the shape of the plant, you can mound soil up around it to help the plant root in and develop the characteristic dome shape. Unfortunately Primula allionii are prone to disease from root aphids, so to help avoid this re-pot them annually and immediately after flowering. Hopefully this has inspired you to try and grow some of these wonderful alpines for yourself, or at least come and see some of the beautiful specimens we have on display at RHS Harlow Carr!

GARDENING

Spring guide to gardening WHETHER YOU ARE AN AMATEUR OR A SEASONED PROFESSIONAL, NOW IS THE BUSIEST TIME OF THE YEAR FOR GARDENING, AND THE NEED TO PREPARE IN ADVANCE IS CRUCIAL. HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON TOP FORM THIS SPRING. BY TAMZIN KRAFTMAN.

Mow the lawn You might have been avoiding this task during the winter but cutting the grass can really neaten up your garden, and make it a more inviting place during the summer months.

Get rid of weeds As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to become more alive again. You might start to notice the dreaded weeds that were hiding under snow and frost. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Preparing soil This step is crucial before your planting endeavours begin. Adding organic matter in the form of compost and aged manure is the best way to prepare your soil, ensuring that it is as fertile as possible.

Popular flower varieties to grow While preparing your garden for the spring is essential, why not prep for summer too by ensuring that your garden is colourful in time for the warmest months? Daffodils

★ They come in a variety of colours: orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. ★ They also need full sun and welldrained soil to survive. Hyacinths

★ They bloom in a range of colours, 8 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

such as white, pink, purple, blue, red, yellow and soft orange. ★ Bulbs will rot in excessively wet soil and growth will be stunted in very dry soils.

★ They will not flower in shade. Tulips

★ They grow well in soil rich in organic matter. ★ Most grow in an open position full sun, although some tolerate partshade. ★ They are ideal for growing in rock gardens. Pansies

★ One of the best flowers to plant during the spring. ★ Usually placed in containers. ★ They need to be planted in the sun or a spot partly in the shade in well-drained soil.

GARDENING

Popular vegetables and fruit to grow in your garden With the pandemic causing everyone to spend time a lot of time at home, more and more people have started to use this extra time to hone their gardening skills and grow their own food. If you’re thinking of giving it a go this spring, April is the perfect time to get started as it gives your fruit and veg plenty of time to grow. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying ‘dwarf selections’ or ‘patio’ vegetables.

Veg Carrots

★ Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. ★ If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. ★ Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots. ★ Be careful when weeding that you don’t crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot flies, which can lay eggs. Putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Cucumbers

★ Best grown in a greenhouse but can

be grown outdoors in a sheltered and warm area. ★ If growing in a greenhouse, you must water little and often to keep the potting compost or soil evenly moist. ★ You can train the main stem up a vertical wire or cane by pinching out the growing point when it reaches the greenhouse roof. ★ It’s important to use sticky traps, to catch whiteflies from excreting ‘honeydew’ over the plant. Lettuce

★ Lettuce is seen as one of the easier vegetables to grow and can be sown throughout the year if it is protected against the cold. ★ Once the young plants have grown, they can be thinned out and added to salads, or you can wait for the firm heart to form. ★ Snails and slugs are a common problem for growing lettuce but can be controlled through eggshell barriers, copper tape, and biocontrols.

Fruit Citrus

★ While limes and grapefruits might not survive a British summer, lemons and kumquats are a gardener’s favourite. ★ These can be grown outdoors in the summer in pots, and need regular feeding and watering. ★ Once full grown, they can be left on the tree until needed. Tomatoes

★ Tomatoes are ideal for growing in containers, either outdoors in a sunny spot, or in a greenhouse. ★ They need to be sowed in early spring and are widely available from garden centres. ★ After initially potting a few together in a small pot, you will need to move them to individual pots. ★ Regular and consistent watering is crucial to avoid blossom end rot and tomato splitting which may result in mould.

Potatoes

★ After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are 23cm high, it is essential that you start ‘earthing up’, dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. ★ ‘Earthing up’ is essential, it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light. Light potatoes are green in colour and are poisonous.

Strawberries

★ Strawberries are perfect to grow if you are tight on space, as they grow in containers, and even in hanging baskets. ★ They need planting in early spring with a high potassium general fertiliser, such as Vitax Q4. ★ If squirrels or birds are a problem, protect fruit with a wire mesh or a net. GATEWAYS SCHOOL’S SMALL CLASS SIZES CREATE A REAL FAMILY FEEL.

ateways is a small independent day school for children aged 2-18 years, offering education from Early Years right through to Sixth Form. It is based on a single 16-acre site in Harewood village, north of Leeds. Early Years provision includes a purpose built Nursery called the Gatehouse. Children then progress to Littlegates which houses PreReception, Reception and Transition (Year 1). As well as having their own dedicated outdoor play area, the children benefit from whole school facilities such as the sports areas, dance studio and performing arts centre. For the past three years Gateways has been in the Top 3 in the UK for the ‘best early years provision in school’ category at the Nursery World Awards. Gateways is regularly placed in the top ten schools nationally for Value Added (GCSE) and in 2021, 61 per cent of GCSEs were awarded at Grade 7 or above. The reason for this is simple - small class sizes and a focus on the individual; average class sizes are between 14-18 pupils. In September 2022, the school is opening a new Sixth Form Centre which will be in a separate building adjacent to the current site. If you would like to see how a Gateways education could benefit your child visit gatewaysschool.co.uk to a book a visit online, or contact Admissions on 0113 288 6345.

LEGAL

No fault divorce – the end to the blame game FAMILY LAW SPECIALISTS ISON HARRISON TALK YOU THROUGH THE RECENT LEGAL CHANGES. fter years of campaigning within the legal sector, the UK is set to face the biggest shake-up in divorce laws for decades. The ‘no fault divorce’ will become UK law from 1 April 2022, and according to Yorkshire’s leading family law solicitors Ison Harrison, this represents the end of the blame game and the divorce process creating warring couples engulfed in animosity. The no fault divorce means that separating couples can now apply for a divorce order together and no longer have to refer to the ‘five facts’ in apportioning blame for the marriage irretrievably breaking down. This means that family law solicitors such as Ison Harrison can concentrate on mediating between the separating couple and amicably agreeing childcare arrangements and the division of property, finances and possessions.

A

What is the difference between no fault divorce and the current divorce process?

Previously, the spouse filing for divorce needed to cite a reason for the marriage ending, and this had to fit one of five categories, namely: adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, separation for two years continuously (requiring both parties to agree to the divorce) or separation for five years continuously (requiring only one party to agree). It is felt that having to apportion blame on one party in this way was outdated, and quite often required a spouse to invent a reason and play the blame game, when in reality, none of the five facts applied and the marriage had broken down due to natural causes and the couple simply growing apart. This happened in more and more cases, and as 24 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

one of the region’s top family law solicitors, Ison Harrison were well placed to comment that the existing divorce laws were no longer fit for purpose.

proceed with the divorce after having had some space to think about the situation. This in itself is a great way for the stress and anxiety of a breakup to subside and for more rational and balanced decisions to take place without blame being apportioned and bitterness growing, and with the help of trained legal professionals such as Ison Harrison.

What are the benefits of no fault divorce?

How can Ison Harrison help with a no fault divorce?

Now, it is hoped that the no fault divorce will allow separating couples the time and space to make considerate and amicable decisions, without creating further disruption for themselves and any children involved in the relationship. Couples can apply for a divorce order either separately or together, and a ‘period of reflection’ of a minimum of 20 weeks is included in the process, to ensure that both parties still wish to

Ison Harrison have family law experts who have specialist legal knowledge, but are also experienced in mediating and understanding the complexities of relationships and the stress of dealing with a break-up. This all combines to help provide a critical service to cut through emotions and maintain a stable family situation for all involved, while the divorce process unfolds. Undoubtedly, the new no fault divorce laws mean this can happen with a good chance of resolving the marriage to the satisfaction of everyone involved. WE SPOKE TO FEDERICO BONELLI ABOUT HIS NEW ROLE AND FUTURE PLANS. orthern Ballet is one of the UK’s leading ballet companies and the widest touring ballet company in the UK. Indeed, their ballets this year include Casanova, The Great Gatsby, The Little Mermaid and The Nutcracker, the first of which will be appearing at Leeds Grand Theatre this month. Casanova will run in the city from 10-19 March. It’s an exciting time for the dance company who have just appointed Federico Bonelli as their new artistic director. Federico trained at the Turin Dance Academy and danced with Zürich Ballet and Dutch National Ballet

before joining The Royal Ballet in 2003. He has performed as a guest dancer with many leading companies around the world and has received several awards. In 2019 Federico graduated from the Clore Leadership Programme and he is a non-executive director and member of the Board of Parents and Carers in Performing Arts. He curated the programme for The Royal Ballet activities in Doncaster as part of the Doncaster Creates festival, prior to its pandemic postponement, and has coached Royal Ballet repertory, helping to nurture and develop the high

standards of the company’s dancers. On announcing the appointment, Sir David Wootton, chairman of Northern Ballet, said: “The Board of Northern Ballet is delighted that Federico Bonelli is joining us. Succession to David Nixon OBE, after the massive achievements of David’s 21 years, has required and received a prolonged, thorough, wideranging and diverse search, supported by best advice, which has resulted in an appointment of the highest quality. “Federico joins us at the height of his career as a dancer with The Royal Ballet and he will bring to us the benefit of his experience there and at his previous

companies, his manifest wish to establish a career with us in artistic leadership and a clear vision for the artistic future of Northern Ballet, enhancing and building on its classical foundations and taking us forward with new perspectives and ideas.” Federico’s tenure officially begins on 1 May. Ahead of that date, we caught up with him to find out more. Congratulations on being appointed Artistic Director, how does that feel?

Thank you, it feels amazing. I am very excited to start working with Northern Ballet and with this wonderful group of dancers and creatives. I am also looking forward to moving to Leeds and discovering more about all this vibrant city has to offer. Is this your first Artistic Director role?

Yes it is. I have danced with many top ballet companies and I have curated several gala performances and projects during my dancing career. I now look forward to bringing all these experiences to Northern Ballet, and to establishing a career in artistic leadership with this beloved company. You have big shoes to fill, with David Nixon OBE stepping down. What will you bring to the role?

You are absolutely right! I want to pay tribute to David and to the tremendous work the Company has done under his leadership. It is thanks to David, his team and the dancers that Northern Ballet has continued to have a special place in the heart of so many people. I will continue to build on the Company’s bold approach to narrative ballet, and I am excited to lead in how best to ensure a diversity of perspectives and experiences are represented in the stories we tell on stage. What are your experiences of Northern Ballet?

Over the years I have admired many of the Company’s productions, and I performed in their 50th anniversary gala before the pandemic. I have also danced in Northern Ballet’s production of Romeo and Juliet by Massimo Moricone. What do you have planned for your tenure?

I don’t want to give too much away for the moment, but part of my vision is to raise and sustain the technical and interpretative quality of the Company. I can’t wait to contribute my ideas to the

excited to see how the Company develop and thrive on their artistic journey.

Will you still be dancing yourself?

No, my dancing years are over. Of course I will miss the stage, but I am really looking forward to supporting and enabling the amazing Company dancers to be the best artists they can be. There is so much talent and I couldn’t be more

Northern Ballet’s Casanova 10-19 March Leeds Grand Theatre leedsheritagetheatres.com As seen on Sky Arts and presented by the Northern Ballet, Casanova is back in Leeds. With a cinematic score played by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia, this production will flood your senses and take your breath away. One of the most notorious figures in history, Casanova was consumed by his desires, living a life full of scandal and decadence. But behind the mask, there was more to the man.

You’ve done a lot of outreach work, how important is that to you?

The work of the Learning team is very important. The power of dance is incredible, and I believe that we can change people’s lives with it. To do this, we need to be relevant to our audiences, both to those that already know us and love us, and also to those communities that we have not yet reached. Do you have a favourite ballet and/or role?

I have many favourites… But if you put me on the spot I will say that Romeo and Juliet is up there. What’s the best part of your new role?

Enabling and witnessing the development of so many talented people. And the worst?

Well, you’ll have to ask me again next time… For more details of Northern Ballet’s tours and booking information, please visit northernballet.com/whats-on Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 27

40 years MARIA ILIFFE SPOKE TO PHOENIX DANCE THEATRE’S CHARIS CHARLES ABOUT THEIR EXCITING SHOWS, FASCINATING HISTORY AND EXCEPTIONAL PAST PERFORMANCES.

FEATURE

n 40 exceptional years, Phoenix Dance Theatre has grown from small beginnings to become one of Britain’s leading contemporary dance companies. Performing to 20,000 audience members a year, alongside the delivering of over 1,000 workshops, Phoenix is dedicated to use their platform to engage and educate through dance. Proud to be performing across the globe, Phoenix’s talented work has been inspiring diverse audiences through four decades of insightful and unforgettable shows. Celebrating their 40-year anniversary, the theatre is delighted to launch an exciting birthday programme, bringing together a range of work from across the company’s illustrious history. Featuring an eclectic selection of work by internationally acclaimed, award-winning choreographers, including former Artistic Directors and collaborators, the celebrations are endless. Phoenix Dance Theatre’s aim is to

create dynamic, diverse and relevant work that embodies the Company’s rich Caribbean history and shines a light on cultural narratives which are often overlooked or untold. Northside spoke to Charis Charles, Executive Director, to find out more about their exciting shows, fascinating history and exceptional past performances. How did you celebrate your anniversary?

We have been lucky to have been able to mark our 40th anniversary in several different ways and this celebration will continue throughout 2022. The ‘40 Years of Phoenix’ programme, which is currently on tour until May, restages key works from across our illustrious history. Our 40th Birthday Celebration Gala, was a one-off event at Leeds Playhouse in February to mark our milestone birthday, which saw dance companies from across the UK join us on stage to share in our

celebrations. Also, a physical Exhibition (‘40 Images for 40 Years’) is currently being displayed in foyer areas of venues on the tour of ‘40 Years of Phoenix’. This is all on top of an extensive education programme connecting with 120 young people from our home city as well as the launch of the ‘Heritage Strand’ for a period of Research & Development which brings the founding member David Hamilton back into the studio with four other ex-company dancers. It’s all very exciting! When was the company founded and what’s the story behind that?

Phoenix Dance Company, as it was originally called, was founded in November 1981 by three black British men from Harehills, Leeds - Donald Edwards,Vilmore James and David Hamilton, who later received an MBE in 2001 for his services to dance. Within a year of its founding the new members were invited to perform at London’s Battersea Art Festival, firmly placing Leeds on the global map of contemporary dance. Fast forward to 2003 when then Artistic Director Darshan Singh Buller relaunched us as a multi-cultural repertory company with a new name:

Phoenix Dance Theatre. Four decades and eight Artistic Directors later and the company continues to create and perform world-class dance whilst remaining proud to be rooted in its Caribbean heritage and still based in its hometown in West Yorkshire. How have you grown over the years?

Heart of Chaos (2022) part of 40 Years of Phoenix Credit @dancephotographeruk

David Hamilton MBE (founder of Phoenix), Primal Impulse (1985)

There have been a number of key moments in the history of the company which we could consider periods of growth, the first being in 1989 when female dancers joined the company for the first time. 1991 saw the company extend its touring to international audiences, touring throughout Europe and to both North and South America, as well as the Caribbean. In 2010 under Sharon Watson MBE’s Artistic leadership the company moved into our current home; a purpose-built ‘powerhouse for dance’ in Leeds which we share with Northern Ballet.

as well as entertain, and giving underrepresented people a voice. How are you going to keep Phoenix alive for another 40 years and beyond?

Have you worked with anyone we would know?

Most recently we have collaborated with Opera North to combine contemporary dance with Opera in two productions (‘The Rite of Spring’ and ‘West Side Story Symphonic Dance’) which is a wonderful opportunity to blend both genres and widen the reach of both of our artforms. What some people may not realise is that Phoenix does not just perform in theatres – you have quite possibly seen us before and just not realised it! We have been involved in mass participation events using dance to educate and celebrate, performing at the Challenge Cup Final, Wembley Stadium and headline events for the Yorkshire Festival, marking the Grand Départ of the Tour de France. Phoenix has worked in television as well, most notably featuring in BBC One’s ‘Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell’ and we played an integral part in BBC Three’s spectacular drama and music event, ‘Frankenstein’s Wedding’. It was

streamed live from Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds, and featured a unique mass flash mob dance choreographed and performed by Phoenix and 12,000 participants! What’s been your most popular show?

‘Windrush: Movement of the People’, choreographed by then Artistic Director Sharon Watson MBE, is undoubtably a standout production. It tells the story of the arrival of passenger ship SS Empire Windrush, bringing with it the first Caribbean migrants to the UK. Our production was being performed as the Windrush scandal was being uncovered, adding to the incredible poignancy of the story and audience’s engagement with it. This was the start of us as a company telling untold stories and using dance as a platform to educate

It is such a significant achievement for a contemporary company to reach 40 years, hence all the additional activity we have planned to celebrate our anniversary year. We will grow over the next 40 years by making amazing new work, using our art to connect with people. Dance has the power to transport us – to move us and also to challenge us. Dance also has the power to communicate across so many barriers – be that cultural, language, or beliefs and perceptions. We aim to continue creating dynamic, diverse and relevant work that embodies the Company’s rich Caribbean history and shines a light on cultural narratives which are often overlooked or untold. True to our name, it is my – our – hope that Phoenix will continue to rise and reinvent itself, nurturing new talent whilst honouring our past. WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?

GOING OUT IS THE NEW STAYING IN... JORDAN ODU IS ALL FOR THE BETTER WEATHER.

ell hello spring, we’ve been expecting you… Did anyone else step straight into summer mode last week, or was it just me? In true Yorkshire fashion, I got a little over excited about last week’s pop of sunshine and was surprised to discover it wasn’t quite shorts and t-shirt weather. It’s definitely coming though, and I’m all for it. Speaking of comebacks, the resurgence of private parties has seen team The Green Room – coming soon! Pink Gorilla busier than ever, hosting a string of bespoke special occasions at The Faversham. It’s going to be a busy summer to say the least. This year also sees my longtime go-to Thai restaurant turn 20, which really makes me feel old. Sukhothai are celebrating with style and panache, with a selection of exclusive menus and special events. Follow their Instagram account to get the news as it lands. Now you may think you’ve seen it all as far as gourmet burgers go, but just wait until you check out the US-inspired Meat:Stack. Having rapidly gained cult status across the north via a host of foodie pop-ups, things really picked up when they opened their first restaurant in Newcastle. From mid-May, you’ll be able to see what all the fuss is about when they open their first Leeds venue. With mouthwatering menu items such as the juicy French Canadian Cheeseburger, as well as Filthy Beef Dripping Fries and Biscoff Shakes, they’re shaping up to be the place to be for calorific treats. Now, think of something typically Yorkshire and you might not go to tequila, but three friends from God’s own

county are looking to change that. Hacien Tequila is a sophisticated new tipple that comes in three tempting variants, including a summery pineapple tequila blanco, definitely my drink of the summer. Look out for them in your local bar over the coming months, and prepare to let Hacien make you happy. Another long-awaited venue is finally rolling into town this month, as we prepare to welcome Green Room to Wellington Street. This stylish and contemporary rooftop hangout is destined to be a magnet for those looking to sip cocktails and sample some of the most innovative vegan eats in the north. Can’t wait to hit the terraces. I always love a local success story, especially when it’s a friend and The Savvy Baker is no exception. Having wowed the city with her deliciously gooey bakes since the first lockdown back in 2020, she’s taking things up a notch with her first cafe in Roundhay. Located just a stone’s throw away from where I live, I’ll be dropping in on a regular basis to get my brownie and cookie fix. Not so good for my summer waistline, but trust me when I say they’re so worth it. Enjoy the sunshine.

Where’s your head at? HOW TO DRESS YOUR HEAD UP USING HOODS, SCARVES, HEADBANDS AND MORE. BY MARIA ILIFFE.

tyling outfits proves a real challenge for many people, not knowing how to take a fit from nice to stylish can be daunting. However, often this is where we go wrong, try not to over style your outfit but instead add to your head. Using a simple scarf, headband, clip or hood can help complete or completely change a look.

S

Scarves Wearing a scarf is one of the easiest ways to add an extra layer, change the style, dress up or down or alter a look, with just one item. For winter this is an especially good styling idea as it will help to keep you warm. However, with all the different shapes, sizes and colours available, scarves work well any time of the year. One way to style larger scarves, would be around your head, wrapped around or knotted on the neck and as a baggy loop over your head, this creates the image of a detached hood.

Alternatively adding a smaller scarf through your trouser belt loops as a fashion belt, will give you a chance coordinate or bring an extra pattern or pop of colour, in a subtle way.

Headbands Headbands also provide a great opportunity to bring more layers into an outfit and breathe life into an everyday and potentially overworn look. With headbands often we stick to the traditional styles, however, it’s better to think outside the box, find longer styles that cover half or all of the top of your head. Often going bigger you can change a whole look with a headband instead of seeing it as a simple or unnecessary accessory.

Clips Using hair clips, as simple as it seems, can take your hair style from a 1 to a 10.

Regardless of how long or short, dyed or natural your hair is, use hairclips to your styling advantage. Instead of imagining the usual black bobby pins, why not think about big, coloured clips matching something in your outfit. Clips can add a layer to a look and hold back your hair or fringe for example, at the same time.

Snoods/hoods A new trend seen on the runway and now being integrated into street fashion: stand-alone hoods. Adding a dethatched hood can complete or completely change a look, by giving an option for you to dress your head as well as your body. Including a hood is also great for practicality, when garments don’t have hoods it’s easy for your hair and day to be ruined by the weather. Of course knitted hood can’t protect you from a storm, but it’s great for warmth, wind and most importantly, style. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 39

Too young for hip surgery? MR COLIN HOLTON LOOKS AT COMMON PROBLEMS AND HOW JOINT MOTION HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE AND STAY HEALTHY. this condition is identified early enough it can often be addressed by hip arthroscopy (key hole surgery on the hip joint) to reduce the risk of degenerative hip joint changes and therefore reducing pain to patients and allowing them to regain their healthy active lifestyle.

ip pain is mainly associated with ageing but young people can also have conditions that develop in early life that can lead not only to pain but also to arthritis before the age of 50. The two most common of these conditions are hip dysplasia and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI).

H

Treatment can be age and condition specific

A biomechanical issue The hip joint is ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) joint. In hip dysplasia the acetabulum is shallow (too small) for the ball. This leads to overloading on a decreased contact area. High pressure over the smaller contact area means that the joint surface wears out and can lead to early arthritis. This can be addressed surgically by moving the acetabulum to a new position which increases the contact area and decreases the pressure. This surgery is called a pelvic osteotomy, which involves breaking the pelvis and realigning it in a better position.

In FAI there is abnormal contact between the ball at the top of the thigh bone (the femoral head) and the acetabulum (the socket). This abnormal contact leads to the femoral head impacting on the rim of the joint socket. The impacting load on the rim can lead to tissue damage such as labral tears and cartilage damage. The repetitive impaction can cause not only pain but degenerative changes to the hip joint. If

If hip pain starts it is sensible to start by pausing the activities that have caused the pain in the first place. It is advisable to see your GP or physiotherapist if the pain continues beyond a few weeks so that they can assess and provide initial treatment which may include an exercise programme and analgesia. If the pain persists beyond three months it would be best to investigate further with a hip Xray to exclude any significant underlying bone abnormality and consider referral to a hip surgeon to explore specialist treatment options.

Turn back time CLARE CAROLL TALKS ABOUT PLASMABLAST SKIN TIGHTENING, THE BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO PLASTIC SURGERY. PLASMABLAST IS A 100 PER CENT NATURAL, NON-INVASIVE AESTHETIC TREATMENT DESIGNED TO SHRINK THE SKIN. lasmablast skin tightening is a 100 per cent natural skin treatment which gives you a brighter, smoother, contoured and youthful appearance. The treatment shrinks sagging skin, reduces lines and dramatically reduces deep wrinkles or completely takes them away. Plasmablast works on natural healing and you will see results at six weeks plus – don’t forget it has taken years to grow your loose skin so it needs a bit of time to shrink it back. This treatment allows Clare to remove excess skin in a non-surgical, minimally invasive manner. Over the last four years, Clare has refined her approach to treating clients that want to look younger or fresher without the obvious frozen, stretched or plumped faces often seen now in day to day life. All clients who undergo Clare’s signature Plasmablast facelift report that they look and feel refreshed and more importantly they keep their true facial expressions. Clare’s approach focuses on the following key areas:

P

• • • • • • • • • • •

Facelift Crepey Skin Overhanging eyelids Bags under eyes Crows feet Cheek enhancement Sagging Jawline Smokers lips Smoother neck Skin texture improvement Lines and wrinkle reduction The treatment works by using a specialised device which delivers a nitrogen based gas which changes in the air just above the skin causing an arc which zaps the skin. This process damages the epidermis many times causing the body’s natural defence technique to go into overdrive, fibroblasts in the dermis kick in and produce brand new collagen, thus encouraging fresh new skin cells and restoring the elastin giving a bouncier texture. To see many before and after pictures look on Facebook –Plasmablast Skin Tightening by Clare Carroll – or Instagram – plasmablastclare. Plasmablast is predominantly for the over 40s who have loose, wrinkly skin but can also minimise acne scarring in younger clients. Plasmablast treatments are priced from £250 up to £800. Clare will give free consultations via FaceTime video chats or at her brand new skin clinic in Selby. It will include skin analysis, assessing the texture of your face and what she can do for you. Call Clare on 07976 971501. Clare can also visit salons in Bingley, Leeds,York and Selby or at your home address, travel expenses will be added.

The future of the aesthetics industry LASER TREATMENTS HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS, SAYS DR SEBASTIAN BEJMA. aser treatments have made significant improvements to the aesthetics industry, says Dr Sebastian Bejma. And the latest cutting edge technologies are significantly reducing downtime, making them increasingly popular and highly effective for patients. “Cosmetic treatment isn’t about reversing the ageing process; it’s about releasing the real beauty that’s already in you,” says Dr Magdalena Bejma, a highly qualified Advanced Medical Aesthetic Practitioner and GP. Dr Bejma founded her medical clinic in Headingley, Leeds with the aim of enhancing the lives of her clients, bringing together some of the Yorkshire region’s premier aesthetic practitioners who provide a carefully selected range of non-surgical cosmetic treatments. The clinic offers a range of treatments, from dermal fillers to fat dissolving injections, and has recently expanded its portfolio further with the addition of a brand new laser treatment. Called the ‘CoolPeel treatment’, it is a CO2 laser procedure and offers the skin rejuvenation results of traditional laser resurfacing with significantly less discomfort and downtime but with maximum results. The laser carefully removes the outer layer of skin and gently heats the inner layer, effectively stimulating the growth of collagen,

which in turn improves skin firmness and texture. The new treatment will be led by Dr Sebastian Bejma, Advanced Aesthetic Doctor and Medical Director, who strongly believes that laser machines have had and will continue to make a huge impact in the aesthetics industry. “If you look at the market today, more patients are wanting skin rejuvenation – but without the downtime,” he said. “In order to do this, you need a technology that can deliver energy in a very rapid way, that confines the heat to a small thermal zone and causes controlled injury to the skin but with a fast recovery time – that’s exactly what the CoolPeel treatment does.” Additional benefits of this cutting edge technology is its ability to treat a number of skin concerns, including photo damage, scarring, pigmentation and deep wrinkles, making this procedure suitable for all skin types. Other laser treatments available at Dr Bejma Medical Clinic include Morpheus

8, the most powerful anti-aging treatment on the market and loved by some of our well-know celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Judy Murray. Morpheus 8 was designed to re-surface and contour the skin through a combination of micro needling and radio frequency laser. This minimally invasive procedure stimulates collagen deep into the skin’s dermal layer, effectively firming and tightening the skin. The treatment takes about an hour to complete and requires a course of three. There is little to no down time so you can return to your daily activities immediately after. “The biggest advantage of these new technologies is that not only are treatment times minimal, recovery time is just as short meaning patients can fit these into their lives with the minimum of fuss,” added Dr Sebastian. “And the results speak for themselves.” Dr Bejma Medical Clinic 7 Cottage Road, Headingley Leeds, LS6 4DD Tel: 07522 775233 drbejma.com

BEAUTY

Be empowered THE LATEST ON BEAUTY, WELLNESS AND MIND FROM ISABELLA CAVALLI.

She believed she could, so she did I wanted to share with you my favourite ways to feel more inspired, empowered and confident. For years I have been studying and practising universal laws, I strongly believe that we are creators of our lives. I had my ups and downs myself, and I know how hard it is to change your beliefs. The secret lies in training your mind, being open, building discipline and having a positive attitude. There is a lot of resources out there on how the laws work, and how you can manifest all your ever wanted in life. One of my favourite books is Sunday Times best-seller Manifest by Roxie Nafousi. This book is the essential guide to anyone and everyone wanting to feel more MUSTempowered in their lives. In just seven simple steps you can understand the true art of HAVE manifestation and create the life you have always dreamed of. I personally listen to audiobooks more, simply because I am always on the go.You can get a copy of this book on Amazon or Audible.

Great eyebrows are good for the soul I always admired women with beautiful, big natural brows.Truth is, eyebrows can make or break your look. Good eyebrows can create a lift effect and it definitely sculpts the face, making it look younger or even slimmer. We say sometimes, ‘I feel naked without my eyebrows or my eyeliner’. If you have been playing with your eyebrows and they stopped growing back - like I did – I have great news for you.You can have them done. Currently there are many different options you can choose from – my favourite one is microblading. Microblading offers more natural, hair-like strokes. Which means they will still look natural if you don’t have your full make up on, and if you wanted to spice things up you can still fill them up with an eyebrow pencil. I fell in love with results from Bethan Sian salon in Malton. Beth is incredibly talented with many years of experience microblading and a lash specialist. The coolest thing about this treatment is that, Beth, who is the microblading specialist, can create the appearance of naturally full brows on any skin tone with any shade range. Also, fun fact, if you lost your brows due to alopecia, you’re still a candidate for microblading. Check out more of Beth’s before and after photos on Instagram: bethansianmalton or book your appointment go to www.bethansian.co.uk

Body musings: cruelty free and vegan! It truly doesn’t get better than this! Your bath time will make you feel like you are meditating! I’ve met Lily who is the owner of Salt + Steam at a press conference in York organised by Busby & Bear. I am in awe of how beautiful the range of bath salts and face steams are and wanted you to try it too. Their unique blends of muscle-soothing Epsom salts, detoxifying Dead Sea salts and pink Himalayan rock salts hydrate the skin and relax your mind. They use all-natural essential oils, herbs and flowers to make bath salts smell incredible, this is what you need after a long day. My favourite must be the Eucalyptus, Lemon & Rosemary Steam Face Salt, I use it once a week to steam my face during my pamper morning ritual. Try it yourself. Lace of Bakewell is For Sale!

QUESTION:

I have been experiencing palpitations for a few months now and this is often accompanied by shortness of breath and dizziness. Do you think that there could be something seriously wrong with me? I have made an appointment to see my GP. Do you think I might need to see a specialist? ANSWER:

Palpitations are a common symptom and refer to an awareness of your own heart beating. Patients may feel their heart beating at a normal rate, a faster rate, which may be regular or irregular, or feel their heart skipping or missing beats. Palpitations often cause a sensation of fluttering or pounding in the chest and are usually intermittent. Many people will experience palpitations at some stage in their lives but most do not have a serious underlying heart condition. However, the sensation is often unpleasant and can cause considerable worry or distress. If your symptoms persist or are associated with symptoms such as breathlessness or dizziness then you should initially consult with your GP who may arrange for you to have an electrocardiogram (ECG). This records the electrical activity of the heart and whilst it is often normal in patients with palpitations, can sometimes pick up an abnormal heart rhythm or “arrhythmia”. You may also be referred to a cardiologist, often one who specialises in abnormal heart rhythms (Cardiac Electrophysiologist) for further assessment and tests to identify if there is a problem. These may include a 24-hour ECG recording if your palpitations occur frequently or an exercise ECG if your palpitations are triggered by exertion. Other tests such as a cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) can sometimes be helpful in identifying patients with underlying structural heart disease. Depending on the cause, palpitations may not require specific treatment although sometimes medication is tried initially. Sometimes a slightly more invasive test called an electrophysiological (EP) study can be performed to identify extra electrical connections in the heart which may cause fast abnormal heart rhythms called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). If these can be identified then catheter ablation can be performed at the same time. This is often very successful and can offer a cure for many patients.
