Winter Spa Breaks
Nestled down a narrow alley, the hotel opens onto a bright, sun-filled world of calm. The lobby leads out onto the pool deck and garden, which is the ideal spot in which to unwind.
When you fancy a touch of village atmosphere, the main square of Naxxar is only 700 paces away. The town has retained its authentically Maltese character, making it easy to get lost in its maze of narrow alleys and back streets before settling in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants off the main square.

You’re obviously very proud of your Yorkshire roots, as you can see with numerous impressions and in particular the Yorkshire Kardashians. Where did you grow up and when did you start realising you had a talent for
I was born in Bingley, so I kind of had the West Yorkshire accent, but then as a teenager I grew up in the Yorkshire Dales. I used to mimic teachers and family as a child, which then led to me taking off celebrities.
I uploaded a few impressions to Instagram after a couple of glasses of wine and the rest is history!
Girls Aloud and that one went well.
When that became popular, I eventually plucked up the courage to go and do standup comedy.
Now I’m doing my own shows throughout Yorkshire and beyond – plus all my online stuff too.
Who or what has inspired you in your career?
Stand-up wise, Joan Rivers was my comedy icon growing up.
For all things comedy it was Steve
Your online following is huge with approaching 100,000 Instagram followers. Have you become bigger than you thought you would be and how you found the live shows going back to last year?
I have my Yorkshire Kardashians to thank for that!
I’d say most people are following me for funny videos and I’m hugely grateful they have taken a punt on seeing me perform live – not knowing what it would be like! I do like to make a lot of Yorkshire references in my material and you can’t beat a good home gig in Yorkshire.
But I’m performing at places like London, Brighton and Edinburgh so there are some things where if you’re not from Yorkshire you won’t get and that’s something to bear in mind too.
There’s a lot of fun routines about growing up in Yorkshire and of course a fair whack of celebrity impressions.
Some of my favourite impressions are of people like Sharon Osbourne, Katie Price and Stacey Solomon, plus Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud.
Kimberley is a Bradford lass so her accent is quite similar to mine anyway!
How was the recent show received in Hull and how excited are you about performing in Newcastle, Bristol and Skipton?
I’m really looking forward to Newcastle on pretty iconic.
Ending the tour in the Yorkshire Dales at Skipton Town Hall will be pretty special.
What are your future plans for further shows, content and material beyond this year?
I think the plan is to do a brand-new tour show next year but I can’t let myself think three shows.
I am performing at Newcastle and Bristol
Skipton on 11 October.
I will genuinely be sad to say goodbye to some of these fun jokes.
What characters do you particularly enjoy doing?
I always change my mind as to which celebrities I prefer doing. At the moment I’m loving taking off Kylie Minogue.
Are you living the dream?
I am so grateful to be doing my own shows and entertaining brilliant audiences. The show is always a fun night out.
What more would you like to achieve?
I have a couple of comedy projects coming very soon!

Starting with modest, found objects from the domestic world, Armanious follows a convoluted process to create duplicates, or ‘distillations’ of these originals, creating a mould and then a near-identical cast of his starting subject. Presented as standalone forms or as accumulations of several different objects, his sculptures toy with the notion of originality and the dependability of the physical world to learn or be a intelligence and deepfakes, this relationship is only ever becoming more unstable. In addition to winning Best Deli in Yorkshire, it has also been voted ‘Best Contemporary – Out of Town’ at our sister magazine Westside’s Restaurant & Bar Awards in 2023. The Times food critic, Giles Coren, also recently visited and had high praise for the High Fisher Gate venue. And the good news doesn’t stop there, after chef Oska Ready was selected to compete in World Skills Culinary Arts Competition in Lyon, France.
Oska had always wanted to be a chef from a young age; he’d always enjoyed cooking and had family already working in the industry.
“I remember I would go to my grandmas, and help out with the cooking and we’d always make an apple pie or some form of pastry together, but it wasn’t until I had chosen cooking for my GCSE that I realised becoming a chef was about to be a reality,” he recalled.
Oska studied patisserie and confectionery at Doncaster College and it was there where he met his current kitchen colleague, Adam Barratt. He credits Mark Jones and Simon Barton as having his current head chef, Marcus AshtonSimpson, whom he has known since he was 15.
Asked about his motivations, he said: “As a chef, I’m always looking for innovative ways to better myself and have a hunger to push for perfection. My biggest drive comes from being with people around who have to same interest, as bouncing off one another has a massive

He doesn’t have a signature dish but loves the whole preparation side of things.
“When it comes to preparation of dishes, I am open to anything,” he added. “If you were to ask me if I have favourites, it would have to be tasks that I’m least knowledgeable about, and things that I struggle with the most, as there is no better feeling that overcoming something you know is going to be a challenge.”
Asked if he had advice for anyone thinking about going into catering, Oska said: “My advice for other students would be: stay humble and know your place. Sponge in everything you are told and have a notebook by your side at all times. Ask as many questions as you possibly can and take no prisoners.”

A new part of the LANDSCAPE
The Harrogate Arms Cafe has brought a new dimension to RHS Garden Harlow Carr, writes Ross Heppenstall.
The lovingly restored Harrogate Arms reopened in April and is proving hugely popular with visitors to RHS Garden Harlow Carr following a major transformation undertaken by The Royal Horticultural Society.
For Yorkshire’s horticulture lovers, there are few pleasures more enjoyable than an amble around RHS Garden Harlow Carr.
And the Harrogate Arms Café, serving fresh seasonal ingredients with a range of delicious options for breakfast, lunch and all-day fayre with artisan coffee, is the
perfect place for a bite to eat during a visit to the beautiful gardens.
The building itself is amazing, dripping with fascinating history due to its origin and development as an early Victorian hotel associated with the Harlow Carr Spa built in 1844 by Henry Wright, then owner of the estate.
The Grade II-listed building has had several guises over the decades, including as renowned nightspot The Crag Bar in the 1970s and more recently as a Thai restaurant.
It even staged a special concert from Yorkshire rock band Terrorvision at the
height of their fame in the 1990s before
2014.
Following its reopening a decade later, the transformation of the Harrogate Arms is just the centre piece of a wider project which impressively restores the historical links between the building and gardens.
The completed project not only provides a new facility for visitors, it has also reshaped the entire look of the gardens for the better, adding approximately two acres to the vibrant landscape.
Now freshly cleaned up and brought back to life, the Harrogate Arms played a key
part in Harrogate’s spa heyday when it was a hotel with a separate bath house.
Opened by the Northern Horticultural Society in 1950, the RHS has gradually transformed the gardens since it merged with the society in 2001.
Since acquiring the site several years ago, the RHS has been working hard to restore the premises and transform it into a new café with indoor and outdoor seating on the terrace.
It has achieved that and also integrated the Harrogate Arms into the general
It now serves a menu focused on fresh seasonal ingredients for unique plot-toplate menus to savour at the new cafe.
Each day features a special menu utilising produce directly from the Kitchen Garden to champion the use of fresh ingredients.
Around the courtyard area, espaliertrained hornbeams have been planted to allow herbs and edible plants to be grown around the feet of the trees, while the stone walls in this area will provide shelter
heat-loving plants.
Arriving at the Harrogate Arms on a Friday lunchtime, the Café is very busy indeed and, after a quick glance at the delights on offer, that is understandable.
There is a wide range of food and drinks available and a host of friendly, attentive staff on hand to serve customers.
An offer of two breakfast baps, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and two regular hot drinks for just £10 represents outstanding value for money.
With it being lunchtime, I scour the sandwiches, salads and hot food and the choice is outstanding.
Sausage rolls with caramelised onions are priced £4, gorgeous baked potatoes £6 (with individual toppings 50p each,) Cornish steak pasty are £5 with homemade quiche £6.
The salads on display – a mix and match salad will set you back £8.50 – also look amazing in addition to the wide range of sandwiches.
After much consideration, I opt for a Vegan Feta and Carrot Focaccia sandwich, which does not come cheap at £9, but what
is it they say, you get what you pay for?
The sandwich is truly delicious, served with a latte (£3.50) and there are also a tempting selection of pastries and cakes with the dairy free yoghurt and homemade granola – topped with strawberries and berries – particularly tantalising at £4.
A croissant is £2.50, chocolate brownie £4 and cakes include Victoria sponge,
cake, all priced at £4.80 per slice.
I opt for the delightful Victoria sponge as a dessert and then head for a stroll around the gardens of Harlow Carr. The site is also home to a garden centre as well as a branch of Yorkshire’s famed tearoom, Bettys.
Very much part of the Yorkshire countryside, RHS Harlow Carr is a delight in every season – and the transformed Harrogate Arms Café is already shaping up as the jewel in its crown.

Feeling BLUE?
Don’t be. Mark Isley has rung the changes at The Blue Bell to create an impressive gastro pub, writes Richard Abbey.
fter many years working at big hotels in London, as well as familiar venues closer to home, Doncaster native Mark Isley is now standing front and centre after taking on his own pub in the lovely village of Blaxton.
Mark got the keys to The Blue Bell at the latter part of 2022 and embarked on a major refurbishment of the venue to turn it
establishments, including the Ramsay Group.
The white exterior has been replaced by contemporary navy whilst inside you’ll
of teal and navy. It’s a stunning space that serves both purposes as a cosy, local pub as well as a decent restaurant. Mark seems to have got the balance spot on.
We arrived on a busy Saturday evening and after turning down the offer of a drink in the bar, were shown straight to our table by our amiable host, Brandon.
As you’d expect from a pub there’s a good choice of beers, including cask ales from the likes of Timothy Taylor and Theakston’s. But what’s most impressive is the extensive wine list, which Mark explained is still growing. We counted 50 different varieties, all of which are available by the glass. This is perhaps unusual but was something that Mark was keen to offer to make them accessible to everyone. We started with a Californian pinot noir (£8.60, 175ml) and a New Zealand sauvignon blanc from Marlborough (£8.20, 175ml), both of which were excellent.
Should the mood take you, there’s also a
healthy cocktail list too.
The food is left in the capable hands of chef Daniel Self who changes the menu regularly, sometimes twice a week.
We started with a very summery amuse bouche of grilled sardine, which was served with a tomato and olive chutney and crisp focaccia bread. The fresh, sweet
introduction to our evening.
Starters soon followed in the form of duck arancini (£10) and hand-dived king scallops (£18). Deliciously crisp, the fried risotto balls were laced with the Oriental
perfectly complemented by a pineapple salsa and fennel. The plump scallops, cooked just right, were paired with the black pudding – a winning combination.
Main courses continued the high standards and I was particularly impressed
complete with crispy skin – which was served with an excellent potato rosti, samphire and a mussel and pancetta sauce perfect and worked harmoniously with the were presented beautifully.
My wife’s pistachio crusted lamb cannon, served with cavolo nero, carrot and bramble berries (£34), was just as good. Cooked pink, the lamb was delicious and tender, given just a hint of sweetness and sourness from the seasonal berries.
We opted for a short break before tackling dessert and took the opportunity to
marvel at the pie that was delivered to the adjacent. On off-menu special, this beef bourguignon version looked fantastic and was served with mashed potato and a little copper pan of mushy pies as well plenty
return visit.
Sweet satisfaction came in the form of raspberry pannacotta, poached peach, cherries and lemon sable biscuit (£8) and Basque cheesecake, blood orange sorbet, pistachio, and pineapple salsa (£9).
Peach and raspberry is a classic combination and worked really well for this dish which received extra hits of
honeycomb. Basque cheesecake is baked and has a ‘burnt’ exterior and this was a perfect example, with a beautifully creamy
inside. More of that pineapple salsa added much-needed sweetness whilst the sorbet provided cool, zesty notes.
In just over a year, Mark has made great strides with The Blue Bell and he promises that there’s much more to come. It’s in a great location, just off the Thorne Road, not far from Finningley and the soon to
has plenty of on-site parking. We’d driven
the effort to return to the Blaxton pub. It’s

Shining LIGHT
F Soon to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Bawtry’s China Rose continues to impress, writes Nigel Martin.
or some time Bawtry has enjoyed a reputation as a prime destination for those seeking toprate hospitality just a short distance from Doncaster’s hustle and bustle. Given its modest size, the historic town is punching above its weight due to its abundance of high-quality independent bars and restaurants. Whether it’s morning coffee and cake, a light bite in the afternoon or an evening meal with friends and family, there’s something to suit every occasion and palate.
For those looking for something that bit special, China Rose, which has been providing the town with Cantonese dishes for nearly four decades (it celebrates its 40th anniversary next year) has proven to be a popular choice. Having opened in July 1985, growing demand saw it relocate to its current premises on South Parade in 1991, quadrupling its covers to 170.
Keen to see whether China Rose’s
parking spot, we were hoping that this
would prove to be a good omen for the evening of dining awaiting us.
As a restaurant that clearly sets its stall out as a top tier establishment, it must be pointed out that China Rose employs a smart dress code (forewarned is forearmed)
you very much. This is a venue that takes hospitality seriously. That said, don’t let this fool you into thinking that the ambience is haughty or dour, far from it. In fact, we counted no less than three different birthday parties, which underlines
the restaurant’s reputation as a place of celebration.
As for the food, China Rose’s extensive list of appetisers was verging on being overwhelming given the choice available. than 20 (count them!) starters, we’d complimentary prawn crackers before making any kind of headway with the selection dilemma.
Thankfully help was at hand in the form of our waiter, who suggested we simplify the decision-making process by opting for the House Specials hors d’oeuvres. Consisting of vegetable spring rolls, paperwrapped chicken, black pepper and garlic spare ribs, seaweed, and battered squid; this proved to be the perfect solution, as it represented superb value for the quality of the dishes given the price (£10.50 per person). To put this into perspective, a portion of the ribs on their own were the same price.
The quality was consistently good across the board, with the aforementioned spare provided a hefty kick) proving to be our favourite, just pipping the perfectly cooked squid (always a tricky one to get right), which came enveloped in a delicately spicy chilli batter.
Having polished off our appetisers, after a suitable interlude our mains arrived and very much kept the quality standard
Rose’s determination to be a step up from of beef in black bean sauce (£19.50) was a real class apart and not shy on portionsize either. We may have had a comparable version of this classic dish at some point in
our lives but neither myself nor my dining partner could remember when. The noodles
that provided just the right degree of heat without being overpowering (£16.50). China Rose proudly states that all its sauces are freshly made on the premises and the difference in quality from your more ‘middle of the road’ restaurants was palpable. While the standard was high, this didn’t mean the portions were on the light side, as they were more than ample. So much so that we had to reluctantly wave away the dessert menu, which gives some indication of just how sated we were.
Coeliacs need not miss out either, as there’s also a gluten-free menu featuring a wide range of dishes. As for the drinks, an extensive selection of beers, soft drinks and cocktails is also available, along with a dedicated wine list featuring offerings from around the world.
China Rose, with its friendly waiting staff and high-quality dishes. The general atmosphere across the restaurant, which is deceptively large inside, was buoyant,
undoubtedly bolstered by the presence of so many birthday parties. This is a venue that is serious about its food offering but without ignoring the importance of the fun factor. That the restaurant holds monthly
appearance of tribute acts and DJs, also shows that entertaining its patrons is just as important as the food it serves to them.
China Rose’s team of chefs are led by Jason Kwan, nephew of owner Louis Wan, who has over 25 years’ experience in both Hong Kong and the UK. This authentic approach and attention to detail was evident in the dishes we had the pleasure of sampling.
From bagging that last car parking spot
delicious mouthful of our meals, we really couldn’t have asked for our evening to have gone any better. It’s therefore easy to see why China Rose is rapidly heading towards its 40th anniversary and is such a wellestablished shining light within Bawtry’s impressive food and drink scene.
