NG:Irememberbuyingacassettewhen Iwasabout11yearsoldofpeople singingsongsfromLesMis.Iremember listeningtoitandtryingtoimagine whattheshowwouldbelike.Eventually IbeggedmyMumtotakemeandwe queuedforreturns.Iwasjustblown away.Theshowreallyresonatedwithme andIthought“Iwanttobepartofthis. ThisiswhatIwanttodo.”

NG:Mostdefinitely.I’vechangedsinceI firstcoveredtherole.I’madadnow,I’m olderandmorematureandhave

experiencedlifeabitmore.I’mnow abletoidentifyalotmorelayerstohim. It’sagreatroleandthere’snootherrole intheshowIwouldratherdo.Ialways liketodiscovermoreabouthimasI continuetoplayhim.

DC:Isaytopeoplethatwealwaystryto striveforperfection,whichisnot attainable,whichmeansyouneverstop tryingtoachieveit.Withsomeonelike JeanValjean,heisverycomplexinmany waysbutverysimpleinothers,it’salways achallengetotryandworkhimoutand Ilovethatabouthim.IthinkI’ve probablyplayedhimalittlebit differentlyeveryperformance.There’s alwayssomethingnewyoucanfindin himandhe’sawonderfulpersontoplay.

Whydoyouthinkaudiencesstilllove tocomeandseeLesMis?

DC:ThemessagesofLesMisarestillso relevant.Everyonehassomethingthat theycanrelatetointheshow,something thattheyhaveexperiencedintheirlives. Theshownowisasfreshasiteverwas, it’sawonderfulcompanythatwe’vegot here,andwe’redelightedtobesharingit withpeople.Thereisnoshowthathasa reactionquitelikethisone.It’sthe greatestshowonearth.

MozzarellainCarrozza(£8.75),a surprisinglylightdishthatispopularin southernItalyandconsistsoffried mozzarellainbreadwithagarlicand tomatosauce.Itsoundssimplebutwas incrediblymoreishandagreatwayto start.I,meanwhile,choseMelanzanealla parmigiana(£9.95),apersonalfavourite, andthisexamplewasjustrightperfectlycookedauberginelayeredwith tomatoesandcheese.Adustingoffresh parmesanfinishedthedishofnicely.

Formaincourse,orsecondipiatti (secondplate)asit’slistedinthemenu,I turnedtotheextensivefishspecials selection-therewere15differentdishes tochoosefrom-takingDaniele’sadvice andplumpingfortheNorthPacific halibut(£28.95)whichwasservedwith alittlecopperpanoflobstersauce.It wasdelicious;thehugefilletofmeaty fishhadbeengrilledtoperfectionand thesweetsauceaddedanextra dimension.

MydadselectedthePolloDiavola (£22.95),apanfriedbreastofchicken smotheredinaspicytomatosaucemade withNdujaCalabriansausage.Giventhe

frequencyhekeptreturntohisglassof water–webothalsoenjoyedglassesof GavidelComunediGavi“Granee” (£11.45,175ml),againrecommendedby Daniele–Ithinkithadmore‘kick’than hewasexpecting.Wesharedsidedishes ofsauteedpotatoeswithbacon,onion androsemary(£5.50)andtenderstem broccoliwithgarlicandchilli(£5.50) too.

Dessertswereanextraindulgencebut wecouldn’tresistatraditionaltiramisu

and(£8.50)millefoglie(£7.50).The tiramisuwaseverythingyouwouldwant ittobe;richflavoursofchocolate,coffee andcreamallworkedinharmony,whilst thelayersofpuffpastryandChantilly creaminthemillefogliemadefora muchlighter,butnolesstasty,option.An Americano(£3.75)andespresso(£3.75) coffeesconcludedthemealnicely.

Ourmealfortwowastheperfectway tospendtheafternoon,thesetting, serviceandfoodwereallfantastic,but evenifyourpartyisonthelargerside, you’llbehardpushedtofindanywhere better.

NewownerstookchargeoftheF&H in2019andquicklyembarkedona £1.25millionrefurbishmentproject, whichhascompletelymodernisedthe buildingbutretainedmanycharming originalfeatures.

Wehadnotroublefindingthevenue, whichissetbackalittlefromthemain roadintothevillage,andquicklymade ourselvescomfortableafterparkingin theamplecarparkwhichoccupiesthe rearoftheproperty.Generalmanager HelenMorsewasonhandtowelcome usandpromptlycheckedusinbefore showingustoourroom–thehotelhas 14individually-styleden-suitebedrooms.

Westayedin‘Tallio’,aderivativeof theword‘Tally-ho’,whichisthe traditionalcrymadebythehuntsmanto tellothersthequarryhasbeensightedthisisallexplainedintheguest informationbook.Shootingpartiesarea regularguestsatTheFoxandHounds andmuchofthedécoristhemedaround similaroutdoorpursuits.

ThegorgeousTallioisclassedasone oftheinn’s‘Luxury’roomsandfeatures afour-posterbedadornedwithcrisp whitelinens,afloor-standingcopper bathtub,cavernouswalk-inshowerand

toiletriesbyNobleIsle.Itwasspacious, comfortableandbeautifully-decorated.

Oncesettledandsuitablyshowered andchangedweheadeddowntothebar forpre-dinnerdrinksbeforetakingour seatsintherestaurant.

HeadchefFabienHombourger returnedtotheF&Hafterpreviously workingtherefrom2008to2010and hascuratedanalacartemenuthat drawsonseasonalityandalsochampions localproduce.

Westartedwithsomeexcellentcelery andmustardseedbread,whichwas servedwithsaltedandharissabutters, beforemovingontoourstarters.

Mywifecouldn’tresistthesaltedsea scallops,caramelisedporkbelly,crispy blackpuddingbonbon,cherryapple, appleandvanillapuréeandpork crackling(£15.25).Itwasastunning dish,bothsweetandsaltywithadded sournessfromtheapples.

Ichoseapan-friedchickenandwild mushroomboudin,roastbutternut squashandartichokecrisp(£12)from thespecialsmenu,whichwaswell cookedandhadrealdepthofflavour. Themushroomsaddedarealearthiness tothedish.

Maincoursescontinuedthehigh standardsandthepan-friedfilletof halibut,saffronandcoconutShetland mussels,gnocchi,piñacoladachicken wing,saffroncrisp,lemonandcoriander oil(£29.95)wastherealstarofthe show.Thefishwasbeautifullycooked andwasgivenrealfreshnessfromthe saffron,coconutandlemon.
