Fostering a love of learning from the very start CHAPTER HOUSE IS HOME TO QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S EARLY YEARS, INFANT AND JUNIOR PROVISION. pplying for a child’s primary school place is one of the biggest decisions parents have to make for their children, laying the foundation stone for their journey into formal education and a love of learning for years to come. Nestled in the North Yorkshire countryside on the outskirts of York, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) welcomes children from as young as 3 months into its Kindergarten, and all the way through until 19 years old. Chapter House is home to QE’s Early Years, infant and junior provision. It is a vibrant and engaging school with a warm, family atmosphere. As part of QE’s unique four school model, children stay in Chapter House until Year 5, when they make the transition to QE’s Middle School King’s Magna in Year 6. In February 2019, the Independent Schools Inspectorate judged the Chapter House Early Years provision as ‘Outstanding’ across all areas, praising the ‘excellent care and learning experiences that the setting provides’. Chapter House has also achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark Gilt, the Quality Mark for its Early Years provision and the Quality Mark for Primary Provision. Chapter House offers a purposebuilt, friendly setting, with the opportunity of free flow from room to room. This ensures children are familiar with all staff and environments easing the transition as the children grow. All the mealtimes take place in a dedicated Early Years dining room, specifically provided for by a dedicated EYFS chef which enables catering for all nutritional requirements in a safe, homely atmosphere.

Still hanging around BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM AND TOUR, THE STRANGLERS ARE STILL AS RELEVANT AS EVER. JULES BOYLE SPOKE TO JEAN-JAQUES BURNELL AND DAVE GREENFIELD. t’s not often a band produces one of the finest albums of their career 44 years after their first hit, but The Stranglers have always been a unique proposition. Rising from the UK punk scene of the mid-70s, the band quickly established themselves as their own thing, due in no small part to the melodic basslines conjured by founding member Jean-Jaques Burnell as well as Dave Greenfield’s singular and baroque keyboard sound. Now, nearly five full decades after

I

12 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

their formation, the band - Jean-Jacques Burnel, Baz Warne and Jim Macaulay are heading back on the road to support Dark Matter, their 18th studio album that saw them achieve one of the highest chart placings ever, proving that even after all this time, they’re still as relevant and essential as ever. That success has been bittersweet though, with the tragic passing of Greenfield during the recording of the record last year. They very nearly finally called it a day as a result, but instead pushed on to finish

what has become both a tribute and an epitaph to their fallen brother. This is the first Stranglers album made remotely, how did that work?

Baz: “We had started off with ten days in a studio together back in early 2019 but spent the rest of that year touring around the world, so never had the time to continue it. Then of course, Covid hit and horrifically we lost our beloved compadre and keyboard player, Dave Greenfield. We really didn’t know what

013 NSide Feb22 26/01/2022 09:54 Page 1

we were going to do, but it became apparent that we should finish the album at the very least. That threw up a lot of questions on the technicalities of how we would do it, but we all have studios in our houses, so the engineer coached us through it and of course we had the luxury of time, with no constraints or deadlines. We worked diligently on it, but it wasn’t easy not being in the same place as each other, so that it came out as well as it did is a testament to how much of a team effort it was. We were united in our grief, but there was a freedom there with the lack of deadlines.” How much of the album does Dave feature on?

Baz: “We had worked on eight of the tracks in various stages with Dave, but it soon became apparent we hadn’t got everything out of him that we needed, so the keyboards were augmented, as everybody knows, but the essence of what you hear, especially the very strong lead lines, that’s all Dave. It took a good two or three months before we could contemplate doing anything though, to be quite honest. It was an awful time, but once we started listening back to what we had already done though, it was quite obvious that it had to see the light of day. He played some fantastic stuff on those tracks and it’s also both a testament to him and an epitaph too. A lot of people have said and it’s something we agree with, that the album is also a really strong collection of songs in their own right as well. That’s another thing to be proud of for us. We came out the other side and yeah, there are a few little sentimental bits on there, but so what? F*cking shoot us. We had to express it and get it out somehow. We have this hard men reputation for whatever reason, but that’s how we expressed our emotions and we’re very pleased with it. It’s a very bittersweet thing, though. A lot of people have suffered great loss during the pandemic, so that was just our own way of dealing with it.” JJ: “When you’ve been involved with someone for over 45 years, It’s a huge loss, not only as a working colleague, but as a member of the family. The f*cker even actually lived in my house for over nine months at one point, until I told him he could find his own place. He honestly hadn’t thought of that, so was like ‘yeah, okay.’ Dave was on the autistic spectrum, which some people really struggle with, and others thrive on. He was one of the latter, but he also didn’t have any filters, so he wouldn’t realise

that you were falling asleep when he was taking an hour to answer a simple question! Baz: “Dave looms large over the whole album, as he always did. He was a huge part of what people would class as The Stranglers’ trademark sound, both him and JJ, so to lose one half of that was very difficult, but his presence very much looms large still. I’ve got pictures of him down in the basement where my studio is and I see him and hear him every day, one way or another. We’ve all agreed that he would have been very proud of it, too. We know he would, as we knew him extremely well.” Can you tell us more about the tracks that were written after Dave’s passing? Was it a cathartic experience for you to pay tribute to him in that way?

Baz: “Well there’s And If You Should See Dave… obviously, but there’s also the one after it, If Something’s Gonna Kill Me (It Might As Well Be Love), which starts with the line ‘Innocence has left this house’, which is a direct reference to him. It’s no secret that Dave had Asperger’s, which made him a true English eccentric in every sense of the word, but it also gave him a wide-eyed, innocent view of a lot of things. There’s references to him peppered all over the album actually, but those two in particular are very specifically about him. It was a very cathartic experience, but it didn’t feel like that at the start. It was more like ‘oh no, I don’t know how I can even face this, never mind do it’, which was really hard to get past. There are a couple of tracks that were quite close to completion when we lost him, so when I first listened to them after that, particularly The Last Men On The Moon, it was really difficult for me to listen to. I got myself all geared up for it and I just couldn’t do it. I had to go back to it a few weeks later. A loss like that could only be devastating

for everyone, was there any thought to calling it a day at any point? JJ: “There’s been lots of times over the years I thought we had reached the end of The Stranglers, where I never had a thought to carry on, like when Hugh left or when Jet’s health was starting to fail. Both of those times, it was Jet who said ‘no, we carry on’ and when he couldn’t play drums anymore, he was the one who said ‘I’ve got just the bloke for you.’When Dave broke on through to the other side, after the initial shock, all we wanted to do was finish the project, but with no plans for touring it or anything more. That was our only priority. But then our agent called to say that we were selling more tickets, so we realised that a lot of people still wanted to see us. Dave being Dave, had inspired so many musicians to study him and I had actually played with one of those disciples in the studio about 20 years ago, so we auditioned him over Zoom and then he met up with the rest of the band in person. His playing wasn’t in question, but he had to fit with the band and get on with everyone too, which I’m pleased to say he did brilliantly. Dave has left the biggest shoes to fill, but we know now that we have the guy to step in.We can never replace him and wouldn’t want to, but he’s left a legacy which can now be followed.” The Stranglers could easily settle for being a heritage act, but instead you have a top five album. How important is it for you to keep challenging yourselves to create new music?

Baz: “The one thing we are adamant about is that we’ll never become a heritage act. I’m not knocking anyone who does it as people have a living to make and if there’s a market for it, f*cking go for it, but we write new material and we still have something to say. I think people want that too, as Dark Matter went Top 5, which is the first time a Stranglers album has done that in nearly 40 years. There were a few champagne corks going off in my house the night we got that news. We are still very much in contact with Pam Greenfield, Dave’s widow too of course, so there were some emotional phone calls too. It’s a cliche, but The Stranglers are a family. We fight, we argue but there’s a deep bond and love there, so no matter what, we get through it, because that’s what families do.” The Stranglers play O2 Academy, Leeds on 12 February and Sheffield City Hall on 24 February. WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?

JORDAN ODU HAS A FEELING THAT THIS YEAR IS GOING TO BE A GOOD ONE.

don’t know about you, but there’s been nothing dry about January 2022 as far as I’m concerned. Quite the opposite in fact. It feels like someone hit the play button and started the year at full speed. I’ve got a feeling we’re in for a good one. Things got off to an amazing start with the launch of Playroom. Brought to you by the minds behind Dollhouse, this dine, drink and dance venue located in the Electric Press is already the talk of the town and for good reason. Playroom is unlike anything else I’ve experienced in Leeds as it seamlessly brings together incredible food and entertainment in a club atmosphere. If you’re planning on dining there, I can highly recommend the tomahawk sharing steak and the house fries with truffle and parmesan are next level tasty. Speaking of the Electric Press, I’m super happy to be working with Revolution again. This bar has a special place in my heart, as it was here, I began my marketing career 15 years ago. We’ve been busy working closely on their £300k relaunch, which has an eyecatching ‘Vodka-land’ theme. Check them out where you can expect all-new interiors, a newly-designed dancefloor and DJ area, a revamped indoor-outdoor terrace and of course, amazing additions to their cocktail menu. They’ll also be launching an exclusive

“Playroom is unlike anything else I’ve experienced in Leeds as it seamlessly brings together incredible food and entertainment in a club atmosphere.” VIP area in collaboration with Ciroc vodka. It’s gonna be big. Another hot concept heading to Leeds is SALT Craft + Falafel from the awardwinning Salt Beer Factory. Combining craft beer and Middle Eastern street food, this bar will be located in the newly refurbished Craft Asylum and promises exceptional food from the Falafel Guys, premium ales from SALT and the fastest serve in the city with cocktails on tap. Add to this their idyllic riverside Granary Wharf setting, and you’ve got a sure-fire winner. Bring on spring. Across the city on Boar Lane, The Collective has rapidly become my go-to coffee and brunch spot. Not only do

they pride themselves on their connoisseur-friendly coffee and inventive dishes (their New York Deli Bagel is essential), but their interiors are a work of art. Best of all, everything you see is for sale, from the tables and chairs, to the cutlery, glassware and artwork. It’s a oneRevolution pizzas and cocktails

of-a-kind venue, and the perfect place to relax and get some interior design inspiration. Closer to home, my favourite brunch spot has just launched by far their best menu to date. House of Koko may have only been around a few years, but they’ve already reached local legend status in Chapel Allerton. My favourite dish is The Italian, which includes salami Milano, tomato and fennel pollen ragu, and a fried duck egg on toasted Santera sourdough. And of course, I had to finish with a takeout selection of sweet treats from Savvy Baker. If you haven’t yet been, then make sure you drop in next time you’re in the area. The show is being put together by Fiz Shapur, one of the most respected and sought after musical directors in the UK who has directed West End musical Les Miserables amongst many other things. Ricky’s Angels are aiming to raise over £100,000 at the event, which will also include an auction – the ladies are still on the look out for prizes so if you think you can help, please get in touch. The money will be donated to two fantastic causes. The first is for the Dr Richard Lestner Student Scholarship – this will sponsor a medical student from any background, enabling them to work for a summer, all expenses paid, alongside the distinguished Professor Ladbury at the Leeds University Teaching Hopsital in oesophageal cancer research. “We know there is a lack of research into oesophageal cancer, hence why we are so proud to be supporting a handson approach,” said Naomi. “We are hoping to continue funding this research for many years to come, as long as is necessary.” The second charity is The Zone, a youth centre with a difference which gives young people and their families opportunities and support when they need it most. It is a lifeline to many children and their parents and is in great

need of funds due to recent government cuts. “We feel The Zone is a beacon in showing how to be there for our young,” said Sammi Shapero, who is working alongside Naomi as part of Ricky’s Angels. “It has played an enormous part in supporting many young people during Covid, due to a huge rise in mental health issues.” Indeed, many of the North Leeds ladies’ children attend, or have attended The Zone, with some even returning to volunteer. All the ladies are huge musical fans – Blood Brothers and Waitress were mentioned, although Naomi says she is a huge fan of them all. Music of the Night promises to be a spectacular evening for all those who attend. With a capacity of approximately 850 at the Royal Hall, the ladies have already sold over 500 tickets and are now on the last push to ensure the event is a sell-out. Ricky’s Angels have been overwhelmed by the support they have received and would like to say a big thank you to all the sponsors: Diamond Sponsor – Skopes’ Platinum sponsor – Naomi Lestner (for Richard x); Gold Sponsors – The Pharmacy Group, Marcia and Andrew

Brown, Astonish,The Dentist, Living Care and Amber Cars, plus all the other companies and individuals that have purchased VIP packages. “We couldn’t have put on the show without them,” added Gaynor Sorkin. “Many thought we were taking a risk post-Covid but the response has been beyond outstanding. It will be a fitting tribute to a great doctor, husband, father and friend.” Can you offer something exciting that money can’t buy? Ricky’s Angels are looking for more auction prizes. They are also looking for any companies or individuals who would like to advertise in their A4 full colour brochure too. If you think you can help call Sammi Shapero on 07930 347776. All remaining tickets are for sale through the Royal Hall box office only – call them on 01423 502116 or visit www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk

FEATURE

hen water was first discovered in Harrogate in 1571 by William Slingsby, little did they know the effect it would have on the town, not just in years to come but for centuries. From Tewitt Well in High Harrogate to springs found in Low Harrogate, it was soon realised that this water - rich in iron, sulphate and salt - had distinct healing properties and was used for popular treatments moving into the 17th and 18th centuries. As a result it brought an influx of wealthy visitors to the now designated spa town. Looking for somewhere more grand to relax, these visitors were graced with the opening of the Royal Baths in 1897, which utilised water from a number of different springs and offered treatments for a number of conditions including rheumatism, arthritis and sciatica. What may seem like a bizarre range of treatments today were household names then - including the likes of the ‘Plombiere’ douche, Schnee (electric hydrotherapy) bath, saline sulphur and peat baths. The Royal Baths were complemented by the Turkish Baths, a ritual of heating, cooling and cleansing the body, and promoting a sense of relaxation and a clear mind. The baths were popular with members of Royal families from around the world and a particular favourite of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters.

W

“Treatments ranged from the likes of the ‘Plombiere’ douche, Schnee (electric hydrotherapy) bath, saline sulphur and peat baths.”

Although Turkish Baths were common in Victorian times, only seven remain which date back to the 19th century. Three of them, including Harrogate, are in England (the Victorian Health Suite in Carlisle and the Health Hydro in Swindon are the others), but none are as historically complete and in full working order as the Turkish Baths Harrogate. The baths’ Moorish design, which feature Islamic arches and screens, walls of vibrant glazed brickwork, arabesque painted ceilings and terrazzo floors (laid by the very best Italian experts), all add to its historic qualities. Today, the baths are intact and very little alteration has taken place over the years. The nature of the materials used hard, brightly coloured glazed bricks, mosaic floors and fine polished hardwoods - mean the interior always looks new, fresh and bright. The Turkish Baths have been used for films, including Dustin Hoffman’s ‘Agatha’ detailing Agatha Christie’s mysterious disappearance and later discovery in Harrogate, Malcolm McLaren’s video for his ‘Madam Butterfly’ recording and E17’s video for their record ‘Steam’. To find out more about the baths, we spoke to manager Christopher Mason.

Heat and shower room

The baths opened in 1897 – what could visitors expect at that time?

They could have expected to be greeted by the paymaster where it would have cost the 2 shillings to get in. It was men on one day and women on another and they weren’t allowed in at the same time. What kinds of treatments were available?

The clients would have been offered a scrub down whilst using the Turkish baths. However the treatment menu would have also included a Peat mud bath, a variety of sulphur water treatments and the height of technology at the time a needle point shower. Who visited?

It was mainly the upper class who visited as a working man’s wage at the time was 4 shillings a week. How did it change over the years?

The baths themselves and how they are used haven’t changed that much over the years, it is basically a warming up and cooling down process. The only major change is now we have mixed sessions so men and women can visit at the same time and ladies are now allowed to use the top hot room which wasn’t the case originally. How did the baths adapt for the

22 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

modern day?

How much restoration has taken place?

The individual sessions were added to allow more people use of the baths. There was also new treatments added including, massage, facials manicures and pedicures.

Over the years there has been considerable refurbishment and restoration as and when required to ensure we preserve the unique nature and visual appeal of the Turkish Baths. We have undertaken replacement of glazed brickwork, re decoration, repair and restoration of the Terrazzo and Mosaic floors as well as exposing more original features including the domed ceiling and wall tiles in the entrance vestibule and original skylights on the entrance corridor.

Have there been any periods of closure?

Only during this last couple of years. The baths remained open through both world wars and was used as a hospital. And some short periods whilst some restorations took place.

Plunge pool

What are the health benefits of visiting the baths?

The heat from the heat rooms helps to relax the mind and the muscles, the steam room has eucalyptus oil pumped in to help clear the sinuses, and a dip in the cold plunge is not only refreshing but increases the heart rate which helps to speed up circulation. What kinds of treatments are available today?

We offer aromatherapy massages, bespoke facials, a range of nail

treatments, body scrubs, mud wraps, relaxation candle massages, waxing, tinting and a variety of alternative therapies including Reflexology, Indian head massage and Reiki. We also offer a variety of packages.

The can learn not only the history of the Turkish baths but also the history of the waters of Harrogate and why people visited Harrogate to come and taste them. What makes the baths so special?

Our massages are definitely the most popular, however our beauty packages are also very popular.

The baths is now the only working Victorian baths left in the country which makes us very unique. The fact we have so many original features left makes us truly special.

You offer guided tours – what can visitors expect to learn?

How important are they to the town of Harrogate?

Which ones are the most popular?

Due to the rich history of both Harrogate and the baths we are an integral part of Harrogate and its visitors locally, nationally and internationally. ***

Guided tours Take a step back and immerse yourself in the heritage and history of the Turkish Baths with an expertly guided tour. The tours are offered alternate Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9am. A resident historian will guide you through the unique history and experience that is The Turkish Baths Harrogate. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and cost £3.80 per person. Book a place by contacting the baths on 01423 556746. Please note that tours are subject to availability. Capital gains WITH HISTORY, TOP ATTRACTIONS AND BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE, EDINBURGH IS HARD TO BEAT.

hilst the temptation to visit farflung shores has returned, the UK still holds plenty of charm for the casual traveller, particularly if you’re looking for a short break to entertain friends or family. With an abundance of history, top quality attractions and beautiful architecture, Edinburgh takes some beating. I took the whole family north of the border for a few days and loved every minute of it. I’d visited the Scottish capital before but purely for work purposes so was intrigued as to what the city had to offer from a leisure perspective. In short, it had everything.

W

30 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

If you’ve never visited before, Edinburgh is essentially a city of two halves (and much more besides). On one side you’ve got the medieval old town, which is characterised by its centuriesold buildings and narrow alleyways. At its heart, perched on an extinct volcano, is Edinburgh Castle. In the elegant New Town, Georgian townhouses line the broad avenues and open squares whilst shoppers hit chain stores on Princes Street and upscale boutiques on and around George Street. We’d picked the perfect base for our two-night stay. The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile was located in the

old town part of the city and just a tenminute walk from Waverley train station. The Royal Mile is one of the main thoroughfares in the city and connects the castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which rests in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat. It is overlooked by impressive, towering tenement buildings and is home to many of the city’s main attractions as well as an abundance of souvenir shops, pubs and restaurants. The Adagio sits at the lower end of the Royal Mile and is a four-star residence offering 146 furnished apartments and studios fitted with a

fully-equipped kitchen. The rooms are perfect for those looking for a bit more space and flexibility, particularly if you’re staying for a much longer period. The aparthotel’s services includes access to a fitness room and private car park and breakfast is served in the cafeteria every morning (supplementary charge). We stayed in a one-bedroom

apartment for four people which had a bedroom with a double bed and a twin sofa bed which gave us more than enough space to relax. We didn’t take advantage of the kitchen during our short stay but can see the attraction for those staying longer - whilst there are plenty of food options close by, eating out can get expensive. We started our exploring on the old town side, heading up to the castle before turning down through the Grassmarket and up to the National Museum of Scotland. This free-to-enter museum is the UK’s most popular attraction outside of London and is worth visiting for the light-filled atrium of the Grand Gallery alone. Exhibitions cover Art, Design and Fashion, Natural World, Science and Technology, and Scottish History and Archaeology, the latter of which is housed in a modern extension to the building. Here there’s also a fabulous roof terrace with fantastic views of the city. Top of the agenda for my children was a visit to Edinburgh Zoo, which we travelled to by bus. It took about 20 minutes and an all-day family ticket (£9.50) offered great value for money. The zoo is set in over 82 acres of wooded hillside and is home to over 2,500 animals including the giant pandas Yang Guang and Tian Tian - the only ones in the UK. Both are housed in their own enclosures with large outdoor areas that have lots of trees, large wooden climbing frames and pond for them to explore. Unfortunately they were both sleeping during our visit but they were impressive all the same. Also at Edinburgh Zoo you’ll find

Tiger Tracks, a new enclosure which houses their Sumatran tigers and gives you the perfect opportunity to get up close to these magnificent beasts. The koalas Goonaroo, Tanami, Kalari, Inala and Dameeli are also housed in their own space and were hugely popular with my two children too. We also loved the penguins, pygmy hippos and giraffes. The zoo is easy to navigate and there are plenty of food options at the Grasslands Restaurant or Jungle Cafe. Plentiful picnic areas mean you can take in your own snacks too. Getting the bus back into the centre of Edinburgh gave us the opportunity to explore the new town’s shopping areas which has recently been enhanced by the addition of the St James Quarter, home

to 80 retailers and 30 restaurants. Food-wise we stumbled across a couple of independent gems that we enjoyed so much we actually visited twice. Civerinos has three ‘slice’ venues in the city as well as a main restaurant and serves New York-style pizza that was some of the best we have tasted. We visited one of their slice restaurants on Forrest Road, close to the National Museum of Scotland, for huge slices (starting from £4) of pepperoni and margherita pizza washed down with ice cold cans of San Pellegrino. It was simple but tasty. Just down the road from Civerinos is Alandas Gelato which opened in the autumn and use Scottish cream and milk to make their Italian-style ice cream. Served in a cup or a cone, it was delicious. There was so much we didn’t do – and would have loved to have done – in Edinburgh but felt like we’d packed plenty into our three days there. The Adagio Aparthotel was a great location from which to explore and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again should we wish to venture further. For a short break, it had everything – even giant pandas.

Factbox: The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile is located at 231 Canongate. To find out more, call 0131 322 8299 or visit www.adagio-city.com Tickets for Edinburgh Zoo start from £21.95 for adults and £12.80 for children. Visit www.edinburghzoo.org.uk to find out more.

Monsoon Adena maxi dress purple £170

ay your farewells to the neutral tones bringing comfort to your home and wardrobe. 2022 brings colour, attention and celebration, breathing life back into your styling. Pantone was one of the earliest to announce their colour of the year,Very Peri. This beautiful purple reminds us of a similar colour spotted everywhere in 2020/21: lilac, now toned darker, this shade brings less subtlety and more vibrancy. Matching with the escapism trend, attributable to the pandemic, this exciting purple matches the necessary positivity and happy creativity that we need to move forwards from this depressive era. Striving for contrast with our familiar neutral tones, dark blues are here to make a statement. WGSN sees 2022 bringing about a decidedly blue period, expecting to see these dark yet lively colours in your dining room and to the grander rooms in your home, but also as a statement colour in wardrobes. WHAT IS INFLAMMATORY ARTHRITIS? BY DR KULVEER MANKIA, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF RHEUMATOLOGY AT UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS AND CONSULTANT RHEUMATOLOGIST AT LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS TRUST AND SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL. QUESTION: My GP thinks my joint pains may be inflammatory arthritis. What is inflammatory arthritis and how is it diagnosed? ANSWER: Joint aches and pains are common and will

sometimes get better on their own after a few days. However, if the pains persist for more than a few days or are severe, it

Turn back time Clare Caroll talks about Plasmablast Skin Tightening, the better alternative to plastic surgery. Plasmablast is a 100 per cent natural, non-invasive aesthetic treatment designed to shrink the skin. lasmablast skin tightening is a 100 per cent natural skin treatment which gives you a brighter, smoother, contoured and youthful appearance. The treatment shrinks sagging skin, reduces lines and dramatically reduces deep wrinkles or completely takes them away. Plasmablast works on natural healing and you will see results at six weeks plus – don’t forget it has taken years to grow your loose skin so it needs a bit of time to shrink it back. This treatment allows Clare to remove excess skin in a non-surgical, minimally invasive manner. Over the last four years, Clare has refined her approach to treating clients that want to look younger or fresher without the obvious frozen, stretched or plumped faces often seen now in day to day life. All clients who undergo Clare’s signature Plasmablast facelift report that they look and feel refreshed and more importantly they keep their true facial expressions. would be sensible to see your GP. A referral to a rheumatologist may be appropriate, particularly if your GP suspects inflammatory arthritis. Inflammatory arthritis means ‘inflammation of the joints’ and is different to age related ‘wear and tear’. It is a broad term, which includes common conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout and psoriatic arthritis. These conditions cause joint pain, stiffness and swelling. They can also make you feel tired and generally unwell. Many types of inflammatory arthritis are caused by an autoimmune process. This is where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is one important example. It can start at any age and can affect different parts of the body including the skin, the eyes and the lungs. If inflammatory arthritis is suspected, it is important to see a rheumatologist to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment as early as possible. Pioneering research in Leeds showed that when diagnosed early, inflammatory arthritis can be treated very successfully, and long-term joint damage can be prevented. A rheumatologist will take a careful and detailed history and perform a physical examination. Blood tests and an ultrasound scan can then be used to help detect joint inflammation and confirm the diagnosis. These assessments should all be carried out as promptly as possible, so that the right medication to improve symptoms and prevent damage can be started. • Crepey Skin • Overhanging eyelids • Bags under eyes • Crows feet • Cheek enhancement • Sagging Jawline • Smokers lips • Smoother neck • Skin texture improvement • Lines and wrinkle reduction The treatment works by using a specialised device which delivers a nitrogen based gas which changes in the air just above the skin causing an arc which zaps the skin. This process damages the epidermis many times causing the body’s natural defence technique to go into overdrive, fibroblasts in the dermis kick in and produce brand new collagen, thus encouraging fresh new skin cells and restoring the elastin giving a bouncier texture. Plasmablast is predominantly for the over 40s who have loose, wrinkly skin but can also minimise acne scarring in younger clients. Plasmablast treatments are priced from £250 up to £800. Clare will give free consultations via FaceTime video chats or at her brand new skin clinic in Selby. It will include skin analysis, assessing the texture of your face and what she can do for you. IN BRIEF

Old boy Jonny Brownlee returns to Richmond House School Richmond House School, the excellent independent preparatory school in North Leeds, was delighted to welcome back its former pupil Jonny Brownlee last week. World and Olympic Champion Triathlete, Jonny, who attended Richmond House School with brother Alistair in the ‘90s returned to the school to visit pupils and inspire them ahead of their House Christmas Cross Country Competition. Jonny was treated to a rapturous welcome by the Year 1 and 2 children and then led an assembly for the older children. Jonny spoke about his time at Richmond House School, his memories of winning a conker competition and delivering milk to the younger classes and talked about how he first got involved in triathlon. The children quizzed him about the places he has visited, challenges he has experienced and his favourite memories of RHS. Much to the delight of all the children, he had even brought along his Olympic gold medal that he won in Tokyo this year. The children were amazed by the thought that he had once sat in the same assembly hall as they do now, and were inspired by his words and advice around overcoming obstacles and never giving up. Chris Bouckley, Headmaster of Richmond House School said; “It is not often you get the chance to welcome a world class gold-medal winning athlete into your school but it was truly inspirational for our children to see Jonny, who started his sporting life on the playing fields of Richmond House School, it really was a memorable day for all of them.”

Exciting times ahead THE FUTURE PLANS FOR ALDWARK MANOR LOOK AMAZING BUT HOW DOES IT FAIR IN THE HERE AND NOW? WE SENT RICHARD ABBEY TO FIND OUT.

The striking bar at the centre of the Elements restaurant

ldwark Manor sits in a beautiful country estate north-west of York and is home to a hotel, spa and golf course. It’s a stunning location but that’s only the start of it. After being taken over in 2019, the property has already undergone close to £8million-worth of upgrades, including redecoration of the 49 bedrooms and

communal areas, the bar and restaurant, the latter of which we will speak more about later. But there is much more to come in the coming years. As I write this, work will have begun on the demolition of the existing spa which will be replaced by a new facility to include treatment rooms, an infinity pool and much more. Construction is

also well underway to create a new three-storey golf facility, which will house the club shop, a sports-themed bar and restaurant as well as extra bedrooms. The course at the minute only runs to 15 holes but will be extended to the full 18 in the coming months. And if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, Aldwark Manor is also adding a fine dining restaurant, complete with wine cellar, cigar room and private dining space later this year. It’s exciting times indeed. With all the work taking place you maybe wondering if this is a good time to visit Aldwark Manor. On the evidence of our visit, I’d say it most certainly is. Take advantage while you can because when all this work is complete, you may struggle to get in!

EATING OUT

Driving through the gateposts and up the gravel driveway you quickly get the sense that this is no ordinary hotel. Entering the reception you can see the marriage of old and new, which works so elegantly, and is evident throughout the rest of the four-star residence. After taking drinks in the Squadron Bar, a replica of the one from “The Greatest Showman”, we were shown through to the Elements restaurant, which is as every bit as striking – it’s bisected by a huge ‘tree’ which forms the centre of a circular bar. One wall is covered from floor to ceiling with artificial plants and there’s a terrace where the roof and windows can be retracted to create and alfresco dining space. It’s all very impressive. We took our seats in one the of the green velvet-draped booths and perused the seasonal brasserie menu, which is inspired by food cooked using the four elements - earth, water, fire and air, hence the restaurant name. It included dishes such as Yorkshire game and pistachio terrine, pot roasted chicken and lime and duck egg set custard. Head chef Kieran Smith has an ethos of maximising the local produce to hand, whether that’s from their kitchen garden or the wider Yorkshire area. After nibbling on some nocallera olives (£4) we started with dishes of classic king prawn cocktail (£12) and lobster bisque (£13). The prawn cocktail arrived in a metal tankard and was most impressive. With lemon, avocado and homemade soda bread as accompaniments, as well as lashings of a tangy and slightly spicy Marie Rosestyle sauce, it was delicious and a great way to start the evening. My lobster bisque, served with braised veal, arancini and garlic lobster was rich and decadent as you’d expect. The bisque, in particular, was smooth as silk and packed with flavour. For mains my wife chose from the

which was served with both a Calvados custard and blackberry sorbet. The food was as every bit as impressive as the setting and made for a more than pleasant evening. And with so much more to come, we can’t wait to return. grill where all steaks are sourced from the Yorkshire area and dry aged to ensure the natural flavour of the beef. Her 8oz ribeye (£30) was a perfect example, cooked medium-rare as requested and served with triple cooked chips, side salad and grilled plum tomato and flat cap mushroom. My venison osso bucco (£22) was beautifully presented with the tender fillets sat atop a burnt onion risotto and topped with crispy fried onions. The forestiere sauce added an extra depth of flavour, making this a real wholesome dish, definitely a taste of winter. A glass of Morandé Pionero Merlot from Chile (£9.50, 250ml) was the perfect partner. The generous portions meant that desserts were a little bit of a stretch but we made room for the orchard apple Bakewell tart (£8) and sticky toffee pudding (£8). The latter was everything you would expect and we particularly like the Bakewell tart

Creating winter interest in the garden BY RUSSELL WATKINS, RHS HARLOW CARR. t Harlow Carr we want to create garden interest for visitors all year round. The cold, dark winter months are something of a challenge, but with a little bit of forward planning you can brighten up the darkest of days. The most exciting part of the garden at this time of year is our Winter Walk. We have a few elements here that give great structure – from statuesque evergreens, to trees such as birches and acers with striking bark. As winter progresses, the stunning stems of cornus shrubs (common name dogwood) set the borders ablaze, in shades of red, orange, yellow. Then it’s not too long before some beautiful winter flowers start to pop up. We have a number of choice hellebore (Christmas Rose) varieties at Harlow Carr, which are wonderful for winter interest. Hellebores come in a range of colours, from snowy white, to pale pink or peach tinged. Some of the later varieties are striking shades of cerise and dark velvety purple. Blooms can last for months, so it’s really worth adding some of these plants to your display. Hellebores are generally easy to cultivate and perform well for many years with minimal maintenance. They can suffer from a few foliage problems though – cutting leaves back will help to guard against significant issues. Daphnes are wonderful for winter scent. We have nine different varieties on the Winter Walk, and a few of them are already flowering. The evergreen leaves give year-round interest too. Snowdrops are a welcome sight through January, and thereafter there are bulbs galore to look forward to. Our first daffodils are Rijnveld’s ‘Early Sensation’ – I love these as there’s nothing delicate about them – they have big spanking yellow blooms!
