Back to business YORKSHIRE SOLICITORS ISON HARRISON RE-OPEN THEIR BRANCHES. orkshire law firm, Ison Harrison, has announced the official reopening of their branches across the region, following a period of temporary closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

All of the firm’s 14 branches, including the head office in Leeds city centre, are now open with social distancing measures in place and via an appointment-only service to ensure that branches can maintain the safety and wellbeing of all staff and clients.

Since 23 March when the UK entered lockdown, Ison Harrison have been looking at ways to extend the reach of their legal services via alternative means whilst branches were closed. This has included the implementation of a new video consultation service on their website to be able to offer 1-2-1 legal advice whilst the firm’s lawyers were working from home.

The new video consultation service is available for all branches and key services. This, coupled with their permanent website live chat facility and the continued offering of telephone consultations, has enabled Ison Harrison to be there when needed throughout lockdown.

Now that many businesses are allowed to reopen, Ison Harrison has been planning behind the scenes with their branches to enable safe face-to-face meetings.

Risk assessments have taken place at all sites and various measures are now in place to create a safe environment for clients to seek advice from Ison Harrison’s lawyers, or to simply drop off documents. Hand sanitiser is available at reception desks and each branch is offering an appointment only service in branch, via phone call or video call.

Managing Partner, Jonathan Wearing, comments: “We have welcomed the news that many businesses are allowed to reopen and we have been keen to mobilise our branches to be able to once again offer a local legal service whilst maintaining strict safety guidelines. Have you gained weight during lock down?

The mandated ‘stay at home’ message, which permitted only one trip outside to exercise per day dramatically increased the uptake of Netflix subscriptions, cue binge viewing and binge eating from the comfort of the sofa.

Then there are the bakers! Panic buying before lockdown may have led to a run on toilet roll, but it also cleared the shelves of flour, sugar and yeast when half the nation decided to channel their inner Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood to bake multiple cakes and bread. It’s clear that this increase in carbs could never be used up in the one-hour exercise slot mandated by the government briefings, assuming you could tear yourself away from the latest box set!

We’re all struggling with weight at the best of times; in fact, according to NHS statistics almost 36% of the UK adult population are classified as overweight, and a further 29% as obese. The significant inactivity and increased calorific intake during lockdown have not helped these statistics. The message that obesity is linked to a reduced life expectancy and a greater risk of heart disease and cancer is well known, but there’s now a new message, as obesity has been identified as a significant risk factor in COVID-19 survival. UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson even noted that his obesity had a direct impact on him ending up in an intensive care unit when he contracted the virus.

Many studies have now shown that there is a greater risk of hospitalisation and death from COVID-19 in those with increased levels of obesity.

NHS data which studied 17,000 hospital admissions showed that death rates were 40% higher in patients with a BMI over 30 which classifies them as obese. Being overweight and unfit means that an individual has a reduced lung capacity compared to healthy individuals; this makes it harder for the lungs to supply oxygen to the body’s vital organs when they are compromised by the virus, leading to an increased need for ventilation. Practising social distancing whilst we wait for a vaccine is one thing, but weight loss is probably our best weapon in the fight against COVID-19.

Support the bird garden AS A CHARITY, HAREWOOD HOUSE IS RELIANT ON ITS VISITORS AND MEMBERS – AND IS NOW ASKING FOR THEIR HELP. s one of the ‘Treasure Houses’ of England, Harewood House is a much-loved Yorkshire destination. Built in the 18th century, it has art collections to rival the finest in the country as well as a rare bird garden, farm experience and over 100 acres of exquisite gardens to explore.

Sadly, Harewood was forced to close its doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic and, at the time of writing, was still waiting to hear when it can welcome visitors once again. But that doesn’t mean everything at Harewood has stopped during lockdown. Whilst the gates are closed, ongoing essential work has been taking place behind the scenes to feed and care for over 300 birds and conservation work in the rare bird garden.

Harewood Bird Garden is a home to over 40 species of birds from around the world.Visit, and you will see the critically endangered Bali starling, charismatic and colourful parrots, as well as a popular colony of Humboldt penguins.You can learn about the birds that they care for, explore their characteristics, their conservation status and what makes them unique, see one of the world’s largest owl species or listen to a flock of Zebra finches.

As a charity, Harewood is reliant on a steady stream of income from visitors and members, and part of that income ensures the health and well being the birds, many of which are endangered in the wild.

Across a 12-week period, £35,000 is needed to support the bird garden and maintain the important work of conservation and engagement with 17 different international breeding programmes. To raise these vital funds, Harewood has launched an appeal via the Just Giving website – www.justgiving.com/campaign/ harewoodbirds.

ith a degree in Environmental Management and Economics, Ben Lascelles is the son of the current Earl of Harewood and manages the Harewood Estate, whilst playing an active role in contributing to the Charity’s Bird Garden management.

W

What’s your background and connection to Harewood Bird Garden?

I manage the Harewood Estate, the land surrounding the charitable Trust, and am Chair of the Harewood Bird Garden Advisory Group.

I’ve always loved the outdoors and birding is a great excuse to get outside and observe the world around us. As kids we’d spend a lot of time outside, climbing, swimming, having picnics and exploring. I think my first proper bird experience was visiting the famous RSPB reserve of Minsmere in Suffolk, close to where my grandmother lived for some years.

I had a year off before studying Environmental Management and Economics at York University, heading to Nepal and working as a guide in a safari lodge. This is where I really got into wildlife photography.

Where have your bird studies taken you?

The nature of my studies has enabled me to travel all over the world and work on some incredibly varied and far reaching projects. This has included time on a remote mountain range in Southern Tanzania, which had a lot of unusual and rare species of birds, a year working in Mauritius, contributing to a project to study the Pink Pigeon, a species we kept for many years in the Harewood bird garden, several years in the most famous rare bird migration spot in the UK, the Scilly Isles and then a project with the Smithsonian Institute in Panama, Central America.

I’ve also studied topics closer to home such as projects on Drax Power Station, Dalby Forest and Pocklington Canal, but these international visits have expanded my knowledge about the importance of conservation, what interventions work in different locations and given me a passion to share this knowledge and these incredible bird species where I can.

and love of birds when they established the Harewood Bird Garden in 1970. I was also aware that my father had an interest via film work he undertook on various research trips in the seventies.

However, the family connection reaches much further back. Harewood was home to an 18th Century menagerie and Charles Canning received an award for the introduction of Himalayan pheasants into England. Later my grandfather was President of the World Pheasant Association for many years.

Gerald Lascelles, son of the fourth Earl, was a competent falconer from an early age. He wrote several pioneering books on falconry and land management and was a land manager in the New Forest for many years. When moving back to Yorkshire some years ago, I enjoyed learning about Princess Mary’s interest in birds and of her ornamental owl collection. I thought I’d built up quite a good selection of owl figurines over the years, put to shame by her Faberge Owl!

What do you know of your family’s love for birds?

What’s significant about Harewood’s bird collection and role?

Fifty years is a long time for a small collection such as ours to keep running. We’ve always had excellent care of the birds in our collection and over the years some notable successes in breeding in captivity.

This is a critical step before reintroduction schemes can take place.

In recent years we’ve scaled the collection back somewhat to allow us to focus our efforts on key areas where there is a connection to Harewood, including South America, the Himalayas, parrots and our native wildlife.

The Harewood Bird Garden plays an important role in raising awareness for the plight of some of these endangered species, through the appreciation gained through seeing them and learning about them from the keepers and from a visit to Harewood.

Why is an understanding of birds and bird conservation important/enriching?

In our globalised world, it’s more important than ever that we’re aware of the impacts our choices can have on the environment and the species within it. Consumer choice drives so much of our politics and economics that making informed decisions about what we buy is a key part of sustainability and conservation. Until recent years, we haven’t always been aware of the impacts we have or the choices we can make.

Birds are great indicators of what’s going on in the world around us and how their numbers fluctuate can inform us around how sustainable different practices are.

And in this fast-paced world, taking time out to just sit and observe is a great release for stress and anxiety. Mindfulness and wellbeing are easily associated with watching birds.

nce Harewood does re-open its gates – and hopefully this won’t be too long – there’s lots more to discover aside from the bird garden.

The house itself was built by Edwin Lascelles in 1759 who wanted nothing but the best for his new home. He employed the finest craftsmen of the time:York-born architect John Carr, fashionable interior designer Robert Adam, England’s greatest furniture maker Thomas Chippendale and visionary landscape gardener Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

Today, Harewood is home to an astounding collection of paintings by masters of the Italian Renaissance, family portraits by Reynolds, Hoppner and Lawrence, and modern art collected by the current Earl and Countess. Edward ‘Beau’ Lascelles was a patron of JMW Turner, who came here as a young artist aged just 22 to paint the new house and its landscape. The family portraits were painted by the fashionable artists of the day and in the early 20th century the 6th Earl collected a number of Renaissance paintings.

In 1767, Thomas Chippendale, who would become the greatest and most famous English furniture maker, received the largest and most lucrative commission of his career, worth more

than £10,000, to furnish the newly built Harewood House. Chippendale and his son not only provided sumptuous highly crafted pieces of furniture for the grandest rooms of the House but also simple, functional items such as garden benches in a project that spanned 30 years. Today, Harewood House is home to some of the most outstanding pieces of Chippendale furniture ever produced.

Edward ‘Beau’ Lascelles also amassed a collection of French and Oriental porcelain to rival that of his contemporary, the future George IV. Outside, the 100-acres-plus of gardens at Harewood, featuring plants from all over the world, were designed by ‘Capability’ Brown; you can visit the Terrace, the Lakeside Garden, the Himalayan Garden and the Walled Garden, all lovingly maintained by head gardener Trevor Nicholson. Plus, don’t miss a trip on The Capability, which sets sail for tours of the lake on weekends, bank holidays and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during school holidays.

The farm experience gives young farmers the opportunity to meet friendly alpacas, learn about Harewood’s family of pygmy goats and see pot-bellied pigs enjoy a spot of lunch, not forgetting their giant rabbits. Life in lockdown HOW WAS IT FOR YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST? WE ASKED SOME LOCAL FACES TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES AND HOPES. 020. That was the year, that was.

It will go down in history as a time in which everything we held to be a part of ‘normal’ life was turned on its head or simply vanished under lockdown.

Gone was our way of life and in thousands of cases, life itself.

The cost in lives was counted alongside the cost in divided families, loss of jobs or livelihood, interrupted education, fractured friendships and a great deal more.

But what about the effects at grass roots level in our region? We asked some well-known faces in society and business how they will remember the pandemic year. What was the worst part for them? And could anything good possibly emerge to be weighed against it?

Their answers were surprisingly different.

“Call me a cab! “…and tell them they can deliver my beautifully-fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy products and drinks of all kinds…”

It might not be the kind of conversation you’ve heard before, but it won’t be long before you do.

That’s because of a new service, born out of the necessities of lockdown, but which is now set to become a musthave for the people of Leeds in the future.

Behind the innovation is businessman Louis Richmond, and his company Arrow Cars, a household name in West Yorkshire. It is called Arrow Fresh, and it opens up a whole new way of shopping, giving customers the chance to source the very best in all types of foods – all of it from selected growers and farms within the local region.

Deliveries are made through Arrow’s taxi network, using experienced drivers who know the area well.

Yet it took the lockdown to bring Louis the inspiration for the idea.

“The biggest challenge has been seeing the vulnerable being forced indoors. As an active company within the local community, it is genuinely heartbreaking to see people being unable to communicate with one another physically. Our service provides people with the opportunity, irrespective of being indoors, to continue to enjoy the very best in food and drink.

“The huge positive of the lockdown has been the opportunity to take a step back and diversify our business. We now have an exciting and growing high-quality food e-commerce business, which we hope will allow the people of Leeds to have next-day access to the finest locally-sourced produce,” he said.

Arrow Fresh updates its extensive lists every week to ensure variety and

can also provide Yorkshire gins, whiskeys, and beers sourced from local breweries.

If anyone had predicted as this year dawned that Jacquie Pern would be in the takeaway business, he would surely have been advised to seek out a good psychiatrist By any standards, she was by any standards a restaurateur extraordinaire, one of the brains behind the legendary Star Inn and latterly, the neighbouring Pheasant Hotel, with a wealth of experience of the industry and accolades from critics and media.

But like many in the business, she was forced to adapt in double quick time when Covid19 changed the world. And so it was that during the long lockdown, takeaway service Phezzeroo took flight.

The enforced break from the frantic pace of a busy restaurant did however, bring some dividends.

“I think our locality has helped us during the lockdown period. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area.

We are able to walk for miles around us and not meet anyone. I feel terribly sorry for people living in cities who

have been stuck indoors for such a long period of time. It must have put a huge strain on these families.

“The Pheasant has been offering a takeaway food and essentials service and we are really pleased with how well it has been received and are happy that we decided to continue trading in any capacity. It has definitely helped towards the upkeep of the building, grounds and gardens, which still need to be nurtured despite lockdown.

“I am an eternal optimist, and have spent most of lockdown trying to look at the positives. From a personal, nonwork, point of view, people have really had chance to look at how they allocate their time and assess what their priorities are.

“We spend so much time chasing money, success, accolades and so on. It has been refreshing to live in a much more simple way and actually spend time with our families. I have four children aged from 14-21 who have all been at home throughout the lockdown period. There would never have been the opportunity for them at this point in their lives to be together in such a way, and for that I am really thankful.

“Also, the effect on the environment through lack of travel is quite astonishing and will hopefully encourage people to look closer to home for holidays. We have so many beautiful places to visit and quality establishments to stay in, it’s definitely offered the opportunity to explore what this country has to offer.

“From a work point of view, certainly in hospitality, we will all have to assess how we run our businesses and there will be lots of changes to be made. Change can be a good thing though. We may all need to look at costs, staffing levels et cetera but our industry is used to adapting and hopefully through hard work and determination, we will all get through this strange time.”

Cameron Fraser drummed up some postive thoughts on the lockdown.

The boss of Tiles and Mosaics feels lockdown presented people with many challenges, primarily because everyone was thrown out of their comfort zone at a stroke.

“We achieved this by working from home, backed by a skeleton staff at our Leeds-based operation picking and

packing orders which we could supply from our stock.

“Because I was happy that we could continue to operate within the Government’s guidelines my time in lockdown at home has been very productive, even enjoyable. I can now use a laptop and my drumming skills have improved immensely!

“The main good thing that arose was our ability to change and adapt quickly.

We didn’t panic, we didn’t get obsessed with finding people to blame like the media persist on doing, we remained positive, focussed and determined to survive.

“We communicated regularly with all our staff, be they furloughed or not, clearly telling them we would pay all of them in full from day one. Everyone was clear that our main goal was to keep the whole team together so we can hit the ground running as and when we are allowed to.

“From a personal perspective lockdown has shown me that the vast majority of people in Britain have shown compassion and respect to their fellow citizens and we are all lucky to live in the UK. “On a negative note the media have

driven me to despair with their constant desire to malign everything the authorities have tried to do to help us all survive this unprecedented pandemic. They only seem to be happy if a political scalp is secured, the media have not helped at all, their reporting has been shameful.”

And how does he see the future?

“I don’t think we ever will return to what we considered to be normality before. People’s buying patterns will change with many preferring online shopping and high streets will suffer.

Travel will take a long time to recover but it will do eventually, but does all that really matter?

“I have missed the ability to suddenly decide to go out, be it to a pub, a restaurant, or to visit family and friends. The lockdown has cemented my opinion that we should all cherish our family and our friends as they are the greatest assets we will ever own… everything else is irrelevant.”

The show must go on for Leeds’ theatres.

Chris Blythe, CEO of the City Varieties, is under no illusions about the task ahead, as this unique Leeds venue celebrates its 155th anniversary.

He stresses that the Varieties is a Leeds, if not a national institution. But it’s not just a matter of civic pride. He regards it as a contributor to the vital cultural life of the city. And it’s a significant employer in the area, supporting many neighbouring bars and restaurants with a regular influx of theatregoers.

“Whilst we’re all working towards and looking forward to the day that we can reopen our Eleanor Goddard doors and welcome our audiences back, we must face facts, venues like ours will be the last to open. Our income generation will be limited potentially months after other parts of the economy start to grow. The whole industry will need to take stock as investors and producers of our wonderful shows have also taken a massive hit.

“And when we do reopen the future is going to be much changed. Reserves will be exhausted, and patrons will have difficult choices to make with a financial recession and their own wellbeing and safety to consider. We will have to continue to operate with appropriate safety measure in place – careful consideration will need to be given to both staff and patron welfare, our cleaning regime, appropriate distancing measures and potentially a period of cashless transactions. The list goes on.

“But however daunting, I am certain we have a future. We must.”

As the country entered lockdown artist Susan Brunskill was busy completing commissions in her home studio and preparing works for her solo exhibition due to take place in May. “Despite Covid-19 postponing my plans, I didn’t think that lockdown would affect my normal routine... How wrong was I! In the grand scheme of things, my work seemed pointless and I struggled to focus.”

It was then she stumbled across the #PortraitsForNHSHeroes initiative started by artist Tom Croft whereby a portrait is painted of an NHS frontline worker as a thank you for their heroic actions.

“It was my pleasure to paint Doris in gratitude to all frontline workers for their selfless acts and time spent away from loved ones to care for those suffering during COVID-19 pandemic.

times to be able to contribute in such a poignant way.”

Life in lockdown has influenced new sets of notecards from the exquisite stationery range, with themes such as rainbows, hearts for frontline workers and longing to say ‘hi’ to family and friends. As lockdown began to ease, plans were under way for an exhibition of original art and new stationery designs at the Paperspoon Gallery, Malton, with ten per cent of profits from the Hi! range donated to local charities supporting those affected by COVID-19.

As a town which draws its strength from visitors, Harrogate felt the impact of lockdown particularly acutely.

But like so many others, Eleanor Goddard spent the time away from her usual role running interiors specialists Furnish and Fettle in a productive way.

“I think people have had a chance to re-connect with their families, friends and communities. We were involved in the Harrogate Scrubbers project, making up packs of fabrics and coordinating deliveries to sewers who made them into scrub suits for our wonderful NHS workers. It was great to be able to do something useful and the sense of community spirit was amazing. People have also been shopping locally which we really hope will continue so that we can re-build our local economy.

“For me I just miss people – family, friends, customers, suppliers. I would love to throw a huge party to celebrate, but I don’t think lockdown will mean a return to big gatherings, so instead I am looking forward to smaller gatherings with family and friends.

Like most people who are lucky

enough to have a garden, ours is looking great this year, so I’m thinking a few Tracey Welch’s house boat outdoor dinner parties with lots of home grown salad will be on the cards!”

For photographer Tracey Welch, lockdown has been a little different, as she explains: “At times like these it’s quite nice living on a boat. I normally prefer to keep my choice of habitat fairly private but right now, when home life is pretty much all life, it seems appropriate to share it. I’ve lived in a variety of marina communities and they represent an eclectic mix of people; literally a flotsam and jetsam of back stories with many and varied reasons as to how we’ve all washed up here.

“Normally, there’s a combination of permanently moored boats, plus the folk who are just passing through but now of course the canals and rivers are also in lockdown. We can’t go anywhere. For a breath of fresh air and mindfulness, all I need to do is pop a chair up on my deck and I’m there, surrounded by it. And being a photographer, there are still plenty of opportunities to take pictures.”

The Covid-19 pandemic has fed into Tracey’s inspiration. “Covid-19 has changed our body clocks, interrupted our sleep patterns, shifted the rhythm of normal life on the water,” she said. “So, the images I’m now capturing are reflecting all of that.They’re naturalistic but also more abstract and atmospheric.

“For me personally this is, in a sense, all golden time. It’s not often you get an opportunity to really breathe and reflect, and once you’ve got over the shock of no work and no physical contact with friends and family it’s actually quite liberating. I’m enjoying getting through all those jobs that would normally be a chore and an effort to cram into the usual routine.

There is always repainting to be done, ongoing repairs and miscellaneous boxes that need sorting through. But this is also an opportunity to spend more time doing the things I love and that, of course, includes photography.”

Bars and restaurants were some of the first businesses to be closed when Boris Johnson first started implementing lockdown measures way back in March. To overcome this temporary hiatus, many of them adjusted and adapted their menus to offer a takeaway service, either via delivery or collection.

We hope that they can all re-open their doors soon, but in the meantime, you can order direct from the restaurants in many cases or via apps such as CityGrab, Uber Eats, Deliveroo or JustEat. San Carlo Flying Pizza Having so many of their loyal customers close by has been a big bonus for San Carlo Flying Pizza; many of them have reached out to request takeout food. In response, San Carlo launched their Flying Pizza At Home food and drinks menu and have been thrilled with the feedback.

“We wanted our offer to be a little different to the usual Italian takeout options and created a special Flying Pizza At Home menu,” said San Carlo’s Joanna Simpson.

“It includes classic pizza and pasta, steaks, seafood and desserts alongside our customers’ favourite wines and food, including champagne, Prosecco, spaghetti lobster, truffle and Pecorino

ravioli and even our Sunday roasts with all the trimmings.”

The menu is available seven days a week via contact-free takeaway collection – it is available to view on their website (https://sancarlo.co.uk/ restaurants/flying-pizza-leeds/).

Customers can then call the restaurant on 0113 266 6501 to order or use Deliveroo.

Joanna added: “We hope to re-open this month [July] and to bounce back better than ever. Most importantly, of course, we hope that no human or business has to go through this kind of unprecedented crisis again.

“These are unprecedented times, it’s difficult to call the long-term effects right now. For most businesses it’s a matter of survival. It is good to see how

many hospitality businesses have used innovation and creativity to adapt and survive during these times. It’s also been good to see operators pull together to share learnings with each other, it has brought us closer as a sector.”

Sukhothai Sukhothai is the home of authentic Thai food in Leeds and Harrogate. Since 2002, owner and head chef, Ban Kaewkraikhot, has received critical acclaim and won numerous awards for her fabulous, authentic Thai food in Yorkshire. Now Sukhothai has become known as one of the premier Thai fine-dining establishments in the region, offering authentic Thai food and five-star service, in the most stunning surroundings.

Ban closed all restaurants in March and decided not to offer a takeaway service initially.

“We put the health and wellbeing of our staff first,” she said. “During the peak of the pandemic, while the strict lockdown was in place, we did not feel it was right to offer takeaway but as soon as we felt it was safe to do so, we made the decision to re-open in June.

“As well as the Sukhothai restaurants, we also have the Zaap Thai restaurants, and have re-opened all but one which will remain closed until July.The support from our customers since we’ve re-opened has been fantastic. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for their support over the past few months, it’s really what keeps us going.”

Ban used some of the downtime to do some fundraising for the NHS, setting up a Just Giving page with the aim to raise £10,000, which they have almost hit.

“All the money raised has gone towards providing meals to NHS staff, key workers, vulnerable people and the homeless,” explained Ban. “We’ve been working very hard and to date we have cooked and donated 3,750 meals to various causes around Yorkshire including St. James Hospital, LGI, NHS

Nightingale,Yorkshire Ambulance,York Hospital, St Gemma’s Hospice, Donisthorpe Hall, a number of schools, care homes and many more.

“We’re really proud we have managed to help so many inspirational key workers. Our Just Giving page can be found on our social media pages, we will continue to do this for as long as we have people’s continued support.”

And it doesn’t stop there. Ban has also been developing the Zaap Thai brand and a range of ready meals, which she’s called ‘Ban’s Kitchen’.There are 18 main courses and six starter packs available which can be shipped frozen to anywhere in mainland UK. “With supermarket shelves being empty we had to work very fast to build a new website and develop a new range, we’re so happy to now have this live, and have been sending our food to all corners of the UK, our new website is www.banskitchenbyzaapthai.co.uk,” added Ban. When restaurants are given the goahead to re-open – fingers crossed for July – the Sukhothai and Zaap Thai restaurants are well prepared.

Operating at reduced capacity, the have invested in separation screens and tables will be socially distant.

“I won’t lie, we are in for a tough time ahead. A reduction in customers means a reduction in revenue, which means it will be harder for us to pay our bills and ultimately stay open. We are praying things get back to normal quickly but safely, and are relying on the continued support of our fantastic customers,” concluded Ban.

Chophaus Switching from a modern steakhouse and bar serving prime cuts of locally sourced meats to a takeaway service is no mean feat, but something Chophaus have taken in their stride. Although they not able to cook their steaks, they have adapted their menu to offer BBQ

and Sunday roasts and are opening three days a week.

“We are averaging about 30-40 takeouts per day,” said restaurant general manager Salvatore Cataldi. “I think the takeaway revolution will carry on, even after everything goes back to ‘normal’. In fact, we are combining some ideas in order to further adapt our menu to be delivered.

The Liquor Studio It’s not just food that is available for home delivery either.The Liquor Studio provides spirit and cocktail making experiences to the people of Leeds – and are now taking things one step further.

“With only fully launching in February/March the COVID situation meant we had to change our business model overnight and become a more web-based service,” said co-owner Dan Crowther. “We did this by looking at our original offering and turning it into a digital one and this where Ginsolation Gin was born. Packaging and delivery was probably the biggest challenges for this. We still needed to make our product stand out and give the customer the full studio experience but through packaging. Delivery was the second as we mainly decided to self-deliver in Leeds so our knowledge of the streets of the city have now become more recognisable.”

The Liquor Studio has increased the amount of products it offers and has been delivering, on average, 20-30 products per day. Will it continue after lockdown has finished?

“One-hundred per cent,” said Dan. “This was a trend that was already growing and this crisis has only accelerated it.”

The Restaurant Bar & Grill A lot of care and attention has gone into the new delivery arm of The Restaurant Bar & Grill – Barandgrill2go.com – and customers will find that the majority of their favourite dishes are available to eat at home.

“If we cannot guarantee the quality of a dish upon arrival to a customer’s property, it does not feature on our delivery and collection menu,” said general manager Jodie Osakwe. “We are constantly evolving the menu in response to feedback however you can expect to find approximately 80 per cent of our most popular restaurant dishes on here. Two of our own personal favourites would have to be the Chateaubriand steak and the classic roast beef Sunday dinner.”

And Jodie is confident the demand will continue.

“The rise in demand for restaurant takeaway services started long before the crisis, driven by changing lifestyles and the rise in city centre dwelling. Whilst its difficult to say if the significant surge in interest seen

Simon Grybas, owner of My Thai Restaurants, is hoping his customers aren’t missing their atmosphere and Thai smiles too much. In the meantime they’ve adapted and reduced their menu to make it more takeaway friendly, concentrating on core dishes due to problems importing many authentic products.

“Our Som Tum salad isn’t the same without the green papaya but our customers love it so much we’ve substituted the papaya with carrot for some who miss it so much,” said Simon. “You’ll also be pleased to know that my favourite dishes, Pad Gra Pow Moo Sub and No. 32 Stirfried Pad Ped, are on our menu.”

The biggest challenge for the Leeds branch of My Thai has been ensuring their dishes are as good at their destination as they are when they leave the restaurant. In his role as owner, Simon ensures all standards are met and that the restaurant runs like clockwork as well as overseeing apps, telephones, collections and deliveries. Sounds like he’s got a lot on his plate!

SUMMER BRINGS ITS OWN SETS OF CHALLENGES, SAYS NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Sow bi-annuals such as wallflowers and foxgloves into pots or a nursery bed for strong plants to bed out in the Autumn for flowering this time next year.

2. As early flowering plants start to fade give them good feed with something balanced to build the plants up for flowering next season. Seaweed extract is good for building up depleted plants.

3. Bedding plants which have been planted out will also benefit from a dusting of a balanced plant food such as fish, blood and bone or Vitax Q4, the feed in the compost that they were grown in originally will quickly run out and this top dressing will make sure the plants stay sturdy and resistant to attack by pests and diseases.

4. Make sure you are removing side shoots from tomatoes growing on canes to concentrate the plants effort into producing bumper crops.

5. Sow a second crop of peas to replace the first seasons pickings, Sugarsnap or mange-tout are ideal for a later crop and are less work as you eat the pod as well.

6. Check lilies for the dreaded lily beetle, the adults are bright red, but the larvae disguise themselves under a layer of greenish slime that look like bird droppings, if you see holes

appearing in the leaves jet wash the larvae off the plants for the birds to eat.

7. In the greenhouse make sure that you are letting enough air in to circulate around your plants to stop fungal diseases and also allowing pollinating insects in. Open the vents on warm days and make sure there is a low level of entry for cooler air by either leaving the door open slightly or with a louvre vent. Still close up in the evening to protect from night cold.

8.You can now lower your blades on your lawnmower and get those stripes in your lawn that are so quintessentially summertime.

9. Apples and pears will have what’s called the “June drop” when excess fruit-lets are discarded by the host trees, this is a natural process and nothing to worry about, the trees are just keeping what it can comfortably support. Plums however sometimes over-crop and should be watched that the weight of developing fruit does not break young branches.

10. As blanket weed forms in ponds use a forked cane to drag out as much as possible. Put the weed on the compost heap, it is a high nitrogen product which will help break the compost down.

Make your neighbours green with envy RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT TEN THINGS TO TACKLE IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER. f, like me, you’d run out of excuses for putting off that long list of garden-related jobs, chances are the last couple of months has seen you tick off more than a few of those ‘must-do’ chores.

For the keen (and not so keen) gardeners amongst us, it’s been the ideal time in which to grow, develop and improve our outdoor spaces.Whatever your level of green-fingeredness, the Royal Horticultural Society (www.rhs.org.uk) is an invaluable resource and has some great advice to give your garden the wow factor.

Here are ten top tips to improve your outdoor space (if you haven’t done them already).

I

1. Hoe borders regularly Summer has arrived, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put

on an exuberant burst of growth. But this also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere.They can be controlled without resorting to weedkillers by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.

2. Be water-wise Ideally water plants early in the morning, to avoid evaporation loss during the day.

On warm summer days, evening watering is also likely to be effective, the dry soil soaking it in readily and low humidity at night reducing risk of disease. To determine the need for watering, inspect the soil at a spade’s depth. If the soil feels damp, there is unlikely to be any need to water, but if it is dry, then watering is probably required for some plants.

3. TOMATOES Tomatoes produce abundant delicious

fruits in a range of colours, shapes and sizes and are best planted outside in early summer. Roots should be kept moist but never waterlogged. Pots and grow-bags require frequent watering, particularly once plants become more established.

Irregular watering can result in splitting and blossom-end rot, whereas overwatering can impair flavour.

4. ‘Come again’ salads Produce your own mixed salads by growing a range of leafy salads and vegetables that can be cut and will then sprout (come) again. Harvesting the young leaves when you need them prevents plants from maturing and ensures several harvests of small, tender, mild-flavoured leaves over a long period of time. Popular crops include basil, beetroot, chicory, chard, endive, leaf celery, lettuce, pak choi, parsley, radicchio, red kale, rocket, sorrel and spinach.

5. Summer hanging baskets Hanging baskets provide valuable colour at eye level. Choose vibrant bedding plants for a short-term show or herbs, shrubs and evergreens for a long-lasting 58 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

display. Popular summer varieties include Argyranthemum, Lysimachia (creeping jenny), Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’, Fuchsia, Pelargonium (geraniums), Lobelia,Viola (pansies), Petunia, Salvia and Nicotiana (tobacco plants).

6. LOVE YOUR LAWN At this time of year, the lawn is actively growing and requires feeding, mosskilling, weeding and regular mowing. If you really want to impress your neighbours a striped lawn looks very impressive, and isn’t that difficult to achieve if your mower has a rear roller.

Rectangular lawns are easier to stripe than irregularly shaped lawns, but with a bit of practice, you can stripe up any lawn.

Staking them early in the season will help avoid disaster. In particular; tall plants and hybrids with large flowers, such as sunflowers, require additional support.

For effective ventilation, monitor greenhouse temperature (ideally keep the internal temperature below 27ºC), open all doors and vents on sunny days and, if necessary, temporarily remove panes.

1. Establish your own routine Without steady schedules, the lines between work and personal time can get blurred and be stressful to get right. Try to follow your normal sleep and work patterns where you can, and stay consistent.

Get up at the same time, eat breakfast, and get out of your pyjamas! Try scheduling in your “commute time” and spend it exercising, reading or listening to music before logging in.

Most importantly, when your workday stops, stop working. Shut down, stop checking emails and focus on your home life. And at the end of the day, try to get to bed at your usual time.

2. Make a dedicated workspace This follows on from point 1: when we live and work in the same space, it can create anxiety and stop us being able to focus.

If you can, find a quiet space away from other people and distractions like the TV (or the kitchen, when you feel snacky).

Get everything you need in one place, before you start work – chargers, pens, paper and anything else – and shut the door if you can. Even in a small or shared space, try to designate an area as your workspace.

Lastly, get comfortable. While it might be tempting to sit on the sofa, it’s much better to sit at a desk or table. If you do not have office furniture like an adjustable chair, try using things like cushions to support you in your chair, or a box as a footrest.

3. Give yourself a break Working at home can make us feel like we have to be available all the time. But just being “present” is no use to anyone if your mental health is suffering.

Making time for breaks is important to help manage feelings of stress – try to take lunch and regular screen breaks.

Give yourself time to concentrate on something else so you feel more focused when you return. Even just five to ten minutes of short breaks each hour can really help your productivity too.

If possible, set a time to go for a walk,

run or bike ride for some fresh air – just make sure to stay at least two metres apart from others, in line with social distancing guidance.

4. Stay connected Feeling isolated is normal right now. But there are lots of ways to stay in touch with those who matter – boosting their mental wellbeing as well as our own.

In and out of work, human interaction matters. Schedule video calls and pick up the phone instead of emailing. If you’re struggling with working at home then speak to your colleagues or manager about your concerns.

And remember, your colleagues probably feel the same as you! Ask how they’re doing and whether there are ways you can support each other.

Make time to socialise virtually – schedule in a digital coffee break or Friday online get-together.

Similarly, set boundaries with work. It’s easier to stay logged on when your home is your office, but try to switch off from work when the day is over and enjoy time with family at home.

6. Start thinking longer term We may have to work from home for longer, so think about ways you could improve how you work while at home. If you have a garden, could you work there if the weather’s warm?

Try to explore how you work with others. Are there different ways to talk online or new software you could use?

Do not worry about getting everything right straightaway. It takes time to get used to juggling a new work-life balance.
