Elvis is in the building The World Famous Elvis Show starring Chris Connor is coming to Leeds O2 Academy on Saturday 24 July 2021. Chris will perform with his 12-piece live band ‘the Steels’, with backing vocals provided by ‘ The Sweet Harmonies’. It’s a magnificent two-hour theatre production, recreating two popular Elvis Presley concerts. Chris Connor’s manager, Lisa Matthews says: “Chris has built a huge following all around the world. He is shy and very humble off stage, however on stage he transforms into Elvis, it can be at times very spooky. Chris makes sure that his tribute is respectful at all times, and as authentic as possible. “Audience members are left in tears and in shock during and after the shows, with the very close likeness in looks, voice, mannerisms and moves. Chris has worked very hard to become the world leading Elvis performer, and he is very grateful for the continued support he receives from all fans across the globe.” 8 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Back in the saddle THE 162ND GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW RETURNS TO HARROGATE SHOWGROUND FROM 13-16 JULY. Selected images courtesy of Richard Walker
fter month’s of uncertainty, organisers the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS) have confirmed that the 162nd Great Yorkshire Show will take place in Harrogate this year and will run over four days for the first time in its history. The Show will take place between Tuesday 13 and Friday 16 July, from 8am to 5pm each day. Last year’s Great Yorkshire Show was cancelled in full for the first time since the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001. Coronavirus restrictions meant the 2020 Show went virtual instead, offering behind the scenes tours of farms, workshops and with food producers that attracted viewers from more than 40 different countries. The show has been planned under

social distancing measures and the YAS are continuing to work closely with North Yorkshire County Council Public Health to deliver a Covid-safe show. It has already been adapted so that most of it is held outdoors, it’s more spaced out and daily visitor numbers have been capped to 25,000 keep everyone safe. Entry will be by advance tickets only. Further measures and changes include sanitiser points, track and trace and changing layouts to avoid pinch points, track and trace at hospitality points, reducing the Grandstand capacity to 30 per cent, extra security to disperse any crowding and a one-way system around the Food Hall. Charles Mills, Honorary Show Director of the Great Yorkshire Show said: “We are thrilled by the response to our plans for the Show this year in what we know will not quite be normal circumstances. “We expected there to be a limit on how many people can attend on any one day of the Show and so for the first time in our history we believe the best option is to offer a four-day event.” York farmer Charles Mills was appointed as Honorary Show Director of

the Great Yorkshire Show and its sister event, Countryside Live in 2015. Charles has held a number of roles within the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, including Joint Chief Cattle Steward and as a member of the Society’s Council, its governing body, since 2002. He chairs the judging panel for the annual Tye Trophy Farming Awards which promotes farming excellence coupled with conservation practices. Charles has played a significant role in the educational aspect of the Society’s work, serving on its Grants and Education Committee and running arable workshops at the free Countryside Days which attract 6,000 primary school children every year. He is also a member of the management committee of the Society’s Future Farmers of Yorkshire. Charles added: “There will be some changes this year, but we want to deliver as much of a normal Show as restrictions allow. We know the Great Yorkshire Show means so much to so many people and we want to give them something exciting to look forward to at the end of a testing time for us all.” The 162nd Great Yorkshire Show will have a packed timetable of competitions and displays, although some areas have changed or won’t take place this year. There’s a new woodland trail with demonstrations in the Forestry Section and for the first time ever, there will be demonstrations from Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) on the Thursday morning. There will be displays of woodcraft,
cheese, rabbits and hives and honey although these sections will not have competitions this year. There won’t be a Cheese and Dairy Show or cheese auction this year. Sections that won’t feature in this year’s show include the Fashion Show, the WI Stand, the pole climbing competition and the Cookery Theatre in the Food Hall although the Game Cookery Theatre will go ahead as usual. The Main Ring is the heart of the Great Yorkshire Showground, home to the Grand Cattle Parade (Wednesday and Friday at 2pm) as well as the Main Ring Attraction for 2021, which is still to be announced. The Equine section will feature daily displays and competitions to include the Working Hunter Championship, Ridden Mountain and Moorland Small and Large Breeds, Small andLarge Breeds Championships, and a Side Saddle Demonstration. Livestock fans will be treated to, amongst other things, the Dairy and Supreme Dairy Championship, Grand Parade of Commercial Beef and Dairy Cattle, and the Supreme Beef Championship. There’ll also be rings for pigs, sheep and goats with milking and handling competitions. Elsewhere there’s a game cookery theatre, family area at the Discover Zone and the President’s Lawn, where you’ll find live music each day. In the Countryside Pursuits Arena you can see falconry displays, gundog demonstrations and a ferret display; there’ll be hound shows, sheep shearing, flowers and horticulture, horse shoeing and wrought ironwork; and don’t miss the Rabbits, Pigeons and Poultry displays or the Forestry and Woodworking area. On the Garden Show stage daily items include a Gardener’s Question Time and Floral Delights with Jonathan Moseley. All in all, it looks like a packed four days. Let’s hope the weather holds out! The story of the Great Yorkshire Show The Great Yorkshire Show was born in October 1837 after a group of leading agriculturalists, led by the third Earl Spencer, met at the Black Swan Hotel in York to discuss the future of the farming industry. They decided to form the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, to improve and develop agriculture and organise an annual agricultural show. The very first show was held in Fulford, York, in 1838 and the first attendance figures were taken in 1842, when 6,044 visitors were recorded. Like other similar shows in those early days, the Yorkshire Show would move to showgrounds around the county and didn’t have a permanent base. It was held in all the main centres of population – no fewer than 30 towns in the three ridings – before the decision was taken in 1950 to build a permanent showground. The Harrogate site was purchased for £16,500 and its imaginative layout and first class facilities led it to it being a trailblazer for others. In 1992 the decision was made to remain at the Harrogate site and an ambitious £10million redevelopment programme was embarked upon. Since then the Showground’s prestigious conference and events venue, the Yorkshire Event Centre and Pavilions of Harrogate have gone from strength to strength. In addition the number of events staged on the Showground yearround has increased dramatically. It is now busy 12 months of the year and the YEC recently underwent an £11million redevelopment, making it the largest event space in the North East.

How could you resist? THIS SUMMER, MAMMA MIA! WILL GET ITS FIRST EVEN OPEN-AIR PRODUCTION, UNDER THE STARS IN THE GROUNDS OF STUNNING HAREWOOD HOUSE. SAM MARLOWE SPOKE TO CREATOR JUDY CRAYMER. 14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

t’s the mother of all contemporary musicals, a global, record-breaking super trouper of a show that’s been seen by over 65 million people worldwide, in 50 productions and 16 different languages. MAMMA MIA!, the feel-good musical with a score of irresistible ABBA songs, has given birth to two smash-hit films: the first, released in 2008, sank even the mighty Titanic at the box office; the second, 2018’s MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, is the most successful musical movie sequel of all time. This summer, in the wake of Covid, the show will get its first ever open-air production, under the stars in the grounds of stunning Harewood House in Yorkshire. It’s likely to prove just the pick-me-up that postlockdown audiences crave. Now 22 years old, MAMMA MIA! has established its place in theatre history – so it’s almost hard to believe that right up until its very first opening night, on 6 April 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End, many theatre pundits were anticipating a flop. Looking back, Judy Craymer – the visionary producer and creative dynamo who dreamt up the idea for the show, and powered it tirelessly to spectacular success – chuckles at the nail-biting uncertainty that surrounded that world premiere. “A lot of people doubted us,” she remembers. “The Lion King opened about the same time, and we were very modest by comparison.” Many were expecting a kind of ABBA tribute show about the band – “they just couldn’t get their heads around it.They were constantly asking me who was going to play Frida and Agnetha.” Even ABBA songsmiths Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus had their doubts: “They said, OK Judy, it’ll be a small show, just in London, and if it doesn’t work it’ll close.” They needn’t have worried. Together with writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd, Craymer had achieved a landmark theatrical triumph with blockbuster, cross-generational appeal, that would delight Abba’s loyal fans and win them legions of new ones. This was, though, no overnight feat – the show had a long gestation. Craymer, who trained at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama in stage management, was working in the production office of musical-theatre royalty Tim Rice in the early 1980s when she first conceived of the idea. Rice was in the throes of writing Chess, his collaboration with Andersson and Ulvaeus. One of Craymer’s first tasks was to collect Ulvaeus from the airport, and

the pair quickly struck up a friendship. “It was huge fun,” Craymer remembers. “Chess was a big project, and then there was the cast album, so I was flying to Stockholm with Tim Rice every week, working in Benny and Björn’s studio. Then we did a crazy tour of Europe with about 5,000 people – the whole of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Ambrosian Choir, and all the artists. It was very exciting, and I got lots of experience.” Crucially, she also had access to the ABBA pair, “which was very fortunate, because otherwise I’m not sure they would have taken this on. I had to pester them for a long time!” Spending so much time in their company, she rediscovered their music. “I listened to their songs with a whole different ear, having met the guys. I’d play them over and over again on my cassette player, and I was fascinated that Björn had written these lyrics. They meant so much, and they were about strong women. They take you on a journey. And that was the beginning of me falling in love with those songs.” Craymer began to see the dramatic potential in ABBA’s infectious pop. “They spoke to me as theatre songs. You’d be lucky to have two like that in a musical, let alone 20. So I started thinking about how to turn them into narrative.” At first, she wasn’t sure what form this dramatisation would take – she considered a film, or a children’s show. But she felt sure that, because the music was held in such affection, it should be “weddings, holidays, something celebratory, because everyone listens to ABBA in a happy moment”. She had a meeting with Johnson – who at the time was working on TV’s Band of Gold – over egg sandwiches in a Baker Street caff, and Johnson suggested centring the story on a mother and daughter. Craymer knew at once she’d found the right formula. “We were both penniless, Catherine was a single mum,” she recalls. “I only had about £1,000, so I said, I’ll pay you £500 now, and £500 when you’ve written it.”The next step was a
meeting at Ulvaeus’ home in Henley-onThames – “and we couldn’t afford the train fare! It was all very hairy, but somehow we did it. And I introduced Björn to Catherine and she was too shy to pitch the idea, so I had to – and then I had to stop her stealing the soap from his bathroom as a souvenir. We had nothing to lose. It’s so difficult to get a project going, but we just got on with it.” Lloyd, who came on board as director, shared their passion, and together, “living on sandwiches”, the trio put together a female-led show full of joyous romance and fierce mother-daughter affection: an exuberant matrimonial comedy set on an idyllic Greek island, with a playful nod to the family dramas of classical tragedy. It’s the strength of that narrative, Craymer believes, that sets MAMMA MIA! apart from other jukebox shows. “It’s an original story, and there’s a structure, and properly developed characters and themes,” she says. “I do like to think that MAMMA MIA! raised the bar.” “Over the last 20 years, there have been so many white-knuckle rides,” Craymer reflects. “As a producer, you need enormous powers of persuasion, and a lot of tenacity.” And she’s still up for more: even during last summer’s lockdown, she was busily planning for a third MAMMA MIA! movie.“I wanted something to cheer us all up!” she laughs. “It’s something I have in my sights. I think there’s a trilogy there. There are lots of wonderful ABBA songs that we haven’t yet mined, and Björn and Benny have written a couple of new ones. They’re keeping them under wraps for now, but they should prove very useful!” In the meantime, she’s looking forward to Harewood House. “Being outdoors will be perfect,” says Craymer. “That wonderful feeling that the sun is setting as the show’s starting. And people will be able to have a picnic, be with friends and family. That’s always been key to MAMMA MIA! – people come, and then they bring other family members, kids, granny and grandad. Doing it in the open air is a bit of a dream come true, and I hope we’ll do more – maybe a beautiful lakeside in Geneva…” Who knows? Whatever comes next for this sunniest of shows, there’s sure to be an audience for it. To misquote those famous, singalong lyrics: how can we resist it? Restaurants, cafes and bars are open once again to welcome you back inside but, if you prefer eating Al Fresco, there are plenty of pedestrianised areas with outdoor seating and tables – all with waiter service. You can savour the tastes of the world at award-winning restaurants or take in the city sights from a rooftop bar. If you want to make an event of it, book a table at Chow Down at Temple Arches; an outdoor destination hailed for its incredible selection of food, drink and music.

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? JORDAN ODU PAINTS THE TOWN RED. AND GREEN, AND YELLOW AND BLUE...
ummer is officially in full swing and whilst there’s been a little less freedom than we’d hoped for, if those extra four weeks help keep people safe and prevent another lockdown, I’m all for it. I’ve got everything crossed for 19 July as I’m itching to get back to events where I can mingle freely and hit the dancefloor like old times – anyone else worried they’ve forgotten what to do, or is that just me?! One place at the top of my party wish list is The Faversham. With over 40 years under its belt, this iconic Leeds music venue has seen its fair share of famous club nights, memorable gigs and of course, legendary garden parties. The Faversham has spent the last 18 months wisely, working to update the venue and re-opening as a new dedicated events space, catering to private parties, weddings and corporate events. It’s the perfect blank canvas for anyone looking to get creative by hosting a bespoke event. Another positive sign that normality is almost upon us is the slew of new openings and big events coming back to Yorkshire. It was amazing to get suited and booted to return to York Races in May, for a hazy day of food, losing bets and vast amounts of Champers. It was perfect and I can’t wait to go back already. I also enjoyed a day out in Harrogate, the highlight being dinner at the West Park Hotel.

Their stunning new courtyard needs to be seen to be believed and comes with heated seating, a retractable roof, bar and plush interiors. Food-wise, their menu pays homage to local food producers and is next level tasty. I had the Roast King Scallops and the divine slow-cooked Rump of Yorkshire Warrendale Wagyu Beef. Alfresco dining doesn‘t get any better in Yorkshire. It’s definitely one to visit on a warm Summer evening. I also popped into the newly renovated Queen’s Hotel to check out their brand-

new Grand Pacific restaurant, which has been a long-time favourite on the Manchester dining scene. With its opulent décor and captivating dishes, it’s a fantastic addition to the city. I went for Salt Baked Beetroot Tian then Tempura Szechuan sea bass for main, washed down with a mouthwatering Spiced Pineapple Daiquiri, definitely my drink of the summer so far. If you can’t decide between cocktails and ice-cold craft beers, then Salt, Craft & Cocktails have got you covered. Coming to East Parade next month promising to bring eye-popping cocktail creations on tap, that can hold up against their award-winning beers. Perfect for a quick serve and cutting out any waiting time in the bar. What’s not to like? All the nights out in Yorkshire have been great, but something had to give and so I headed out to Grasmere with friends to recuperate and showcase my outdoorsy side. Days spent hiking were quite literally breath-taking and just what the doctor ordered. My hard work paid off too, as I was rewarded with evenings spent eating and drinking around one of my favourite staycation places. Back home, I’ve been getting my stretch and flex on by hitting Boutique Studio Warrior Works in Roundhay for a bit of yoga and Pilates. So far, so good so watch this space for a hot new garden
bod incoming (let’s face it, the beach ain’t happening anytime soon). Finally whilst looking into our upcoming events we stumbled across Oula Creative, the boutique catering company popping the colour back into communal dining. These guys are the perfect people to ensure any event is memorable and most importantly documented on Insta in all of its pictureperfect glory. I mean if it’s not on the gram did it even happen? We sampled the Rainbow Sliders, a Sassy Salad Platters of Vietnamese Prawn and Chicken Rice noodles, finishing off with the insanely good Choux Bombs, a choux pastry bite filled with cream and dipped in Belgian chocolate. If you’re looking for something different for your
next big occasion, look no further. That’s all from me this month, stay safe and we’ll see you on a dancefloor late July. Salt, Craft & Cocktails - coming to Leeds

A tragic loss THE VERY SUDDEN AND TOTALLY UNEXPECTED DEATH OF HIS SON PROMPTED FATHER DAVID BRANSBY TO CREATE A BOOK OF POETRY. ollowing on from an awful experience that happened in November 2019, David Bransby expressed his feelings into verse, and penned three poems, My Beautiful Son, My Darling Boy & The Saddest 100 Days Of My Life. As David is not alone in putting emotions into verse, he is looking for around 100 of the most beautiful, yet heart-breaking poems that have been written by/for bereaved parents, siblings and/or grandparents. The loss of his son Elliot continues to be a major part of his life and through the emotion of poetry, David aims to raise money for a great cause. Once completed, the book will be sold throughout the UK by The Compassionate Friends. David has an aim to raise £30,000 for the charity organisation - with all proceeds and sales (after design, typesetting and printing costs) going to the beloved charity. The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is a charitable organisation of bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents dedicated to the support and care of other similarly bereaved family members who have suffered the death of a child or children of any age and from any cause. Many people who have suffered the

loss of a child feel a bond with others in the same situation and wish to extend the hand of friendship. They offer support, both directly to bereaved families, and indirectly by fostering understanding and good practice amongst professionals concerned with child death and by increasing public awareness. In TCF, “family” covers a broad spectrum of relationships. They aim to help any individual or family affected by the death of a child, including unmarried partners, adoptive parents, step families, same sex couples and single parent families. TCF has no religious affiliation and offers support to bereaved families irrespective of the age of the child, cause of death, ethnic, social or political background. They respect the privacy of all those who come to us for support and offer a confidential service. The association with the charity, The Compassionate Friends, has helped David enormously after the loss of his son. This is his aim to give back to a truly amazing charity. This is a national and multi-faith project, and David is actively seeking poems that will help to make up the book, and sponsorship that will make the project a financial success.
If you would like to help, your poems, photographs, logo, and/or sponsors names, cover designs, suggested book names, and any further questions can go to, David Bransby at forgetmenotpoems2021@gmail.com Sponsorship donations should be by cheque, and payable to, The Compassionate Friends. For David to keep a track on sponsorship and expenditure, he would like the donations to be sent by post to his home address: David Bransby, 62 Blackmoor Court, Alwoodley, Leeds LS17 7RT. Please include an email address for him to acknowledge its safe receipt. Please can all submissions and donations be sent by 31 August 2021. Should you set up a fundraising page using JustGiving, kindly send David an email just to let him know. To find out more visit https://www.tcf.org.uk/events/378fundraising-book-of-poetry/

IN HER LATEST COLUMN, CLARE CAROLL TALKS MICRONEEDLING AND HOW IT CAN FILL IN AND SMOOTH OUT YOUR WRINKLES.
et’s talk this month about Microneedling, a fantastic treatment which instantly brightens dull and tired skin. Microneedling smoothes fine lines and wrinkles, fills out acne scarring, helps with hair loss and even cellulite. It could be just what your skin is shouting out for. Also known as CIT (collagen induction therapy), Microneedling procedure involves the use of tiny, almost microscopic, sterile needles which pierce tiny holes in the skin causing hundreds of tiny traumas which start your body’s healing process by sending collagen and elastin to patch them up. Collagen helps fill in and smooth out wrinkles. You would need 3-5 treatments for a longer lasting effect but with just one treatment you get an instant glow which would last 3-4 weeks. EGF (epidermal growth factor) serums can be used in conjunction with Microneedling which speeds up the recovery time. If you would like an appointment for my treatment please get in touch, it’s 100 per cent natural, there are no injections, simply trauma and healing.

Quality patient care WITH A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR TREATMENT AND WELFARE, THE TEAM AT JOINT MOTION CAN GET YOU BACK TO DOING THE THINGS YOU LOVE. f you’re affected by knee or hip pain, you don’t have to suffer in silence. A new Leeds-based orthopaedic clinic is fully focused on improving their patients’ mobility and their quality of life. JointMotion is a group of established surgeons, with proven high quality outcomes, who have worked together for up to 15 years in the NHS delivering these key elements of an excellent service in the private sector. As specialists in hip and knee treatments, including replacements for arthritis, all consultants are fellowship trained with backgrounds in prestigious teaching hospitals in Leeds, and are teaching centre consultants at the regional centre of complex surgery. “Orthopaedic surgery is very much a team exercise and this extends from decision making in clinic to performing surgery with an experienced colleague,” said consultant surgeon George Whitwell. “All members of the Joint Motion healthcare group are used to working and collaborating together in Leeds Teaching Hospitals. This presented an ideal opportunity for us to pool experience and knowledge.” The importance of this collective expertise is highlighted by Campbell MacEachern: “The governance structure we have built into Joint Motion Healthcare allows us to continually ensure that patients are receiving the best clinical opinion and management.” Exemplary care is matched by exemplary facilities and Joint Motion have a close working relationship with top private health providers Spire and Nuffield, with their clinics based in their hospitals. This means they can ensure there is always a private room available for you, with easy access and a team of professionals on hand to make sure your visits run smoothly and pleasurably, providing the certainty and security you need for a better journey. Spire is the second-largest private healthcare provider in the UK. They currently run 38 private hospitals and ten private clinics. Founded in 2007, they have won a slew of awards and developed a

reputation for exceptional, professional care. Nuffield is the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider in the UK. They were named Private Hospital Group of the Year in 2018, and the Care Quality Commission singled out their ‘kind and compassionate care’ in a 2017 ‘Outstanding’ review. Sanjeev Anand is a
consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee surgery and sports injuries at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Spire Leeds and Nuffield Leeds. Talking about the benefits of being treated by Joint Motion, he said: “All the surgeons in Joint Motion work at Leeds Teaching Hospitals as part of a team with a proven track record in excellence. We now have the opportunity to bring the benefits of this shared learning and collaborative working gained over many years to the private sector to set new standards in high quality patient care.” Mark Edward Emerton added: “Throughout my career it has been working as a clinical team with trusted colleagues that has clearly offered patients a better service. The routine discussion of cases, establishing an effective governance and review process and providing immediate access for patients to a clinical group is unquestionably the route to a safe, effective and high quality service.”
Joseph Aderinto joined the group as he “found it appealing to be part of a group of fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons whose main focus is to deliver high quality patient centred care”, while Colin Holton believes their “team practice allows us to provide the governance and assurance that our clinical outcomes are world-class for our patients”. “I believe Joint Motion will enable us to give assurance to our patients that they will receive expert, safe and up-to-date treatment for any hip or knee problems they may have,” added Veysi T Veysi. Whether you’ve suffered a sports injury, have structural deformity, or have general bone and joint pain, the team at Joint Motion Group can get you back to doing the things you love. “We strongly believe that together we can provide the best possible treatment and advice to any patient with musculoskeletal problems related to the hip or the knee. The advice will always be impartial, and evidence based,” concluded Prof. Hemant Pandit.

EATING OUT
Flight of fancy DINNER IN THE DALES (AND AN OVERNIGHT STAY) IN THE GRAND SETTING OF FALCON MANOR WAS TOO GOOD TO TURN DOWN, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. hen the temperature’s topping 25 degrees outside you don’t expect to walk into a hotel and find a log fire crackling away in the entrance hall. But this is Falcon Manor after all, a cosy country house in the Yorkshire Dales, and you know what, it didn’t feel out of place, it actually felt perfect. The log fire is one of many welcoming touches you’ll find in the manor (you’ll find wellies by the door too), which dates back to 1841 and was purchased by the James’ Places in 2014. The group, who have properties throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire, undertook a full refurbishment programme that saw many of its original features exposed and restored and what remains is a stunning 17-bedroom hotel, wedding venue, restaurant and bar. Positioned on the outskirts of Settle, it enjoys far-reaching views into the Dales and is handily placed for visiting the likes of Skipton Castle, Malham Cove and Ingleton Falls. New for this year, Falcon Manor has e-bikes available for hire, the perfect way to explore the surrounding area. With limited time, unfortunately cycling wasn’t on our agenda on this occasion; we were here to sample Falcon Manor’s dinner, bed and breakfast packages. There are 14 rooms and three suites, which are all furnished to the highest standards with traditional touches and sumptuous styling. Each has goose down duvets, feather-soft pillows and the finest cotton sheets as well as comforts including a flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities and free wifi. We stayed in the Turret Suite which was just sublime. High ceilings and mirrored furniture gave it a real sense of space, leaving plenty of room for a huge roll-top bath in the window (there is also a large walk-in shower too in the en-suite if you prefer).

Suitably refreshed after our drive up, we followed the smell of the fire back down the impressive staircase to reception where we were shown into the Garden Room for dinner. As you can imagine, the room is flooded with light and had doors which had been opened onto the outdoor terrace - well, it was 25 degrees outside. We took a table next to the open door and marvelled at the decor which ranged The Turret Suite
from ornate coving and cornices to imposing feathered nightshades. It was cool and contemporary but still had that country house feel. The Garden Room is also used for wedding receptions and is a stunning space, whilst the adjoining snug offered a touch more privacy. Our Sunday visit saw a set dinner menu in place with two courses for £22.95 and three for £25.95, which proved to be great value. The kitchen at Falcon Manor have a simple philosophy fresh ingredients prepared with care to create stunning dishes - and this was clearly evident in my starter of cured gravadlax, pickled fennel and crab, pea shoots and herb oil. Fresh and flavoursome, it was the perfect summer appetiser. Across the table, my wife’s beetroot falafel, cous cous, pomegranate seeds and sesame dressing had the same balance and was equally delicious. As it was Sunday there was a roast on the menu and my wife couldn’t resist the sirloin of beef, Yorkshire pudding, fondant potatoes, butternut squash puree and red wine jus. It was everything you would expect - tender

beef, a proper Yorkshire and a jug of gravy on the side too. I went a little off piste with a katsu chicken curry, jewelled rice, mint yoghurt and poppadom crumb but was equally impressed, again the flavours were just right. We chose a Flying Zebra Pinotage from South Africa (£22.95) to accompany our dishes. With room for dessert we shared a lemon tart, fresh raspberries and lemon sorbet, and a selection of local cheeses, celery, grapes, tomato chutney and biscuits. The chutney in particular was excellent, tangy with a hint of spice, and really complemented the cheeses on offer.
night’s dinner. From cereals to pastries there was a good selection of cold food on offer but it was the hot food that really impressed - a Yorkshire breakfast and eggs Benedict were both delicious and an ideal way to start the day. If you fancy something a little less substantial, Falcon Manor also serve afternoon tea each day from 12-5pm with prices starting from £17.50 per person (£23 with prosecco). Service was impeccable throughout our stay and we found the country house stylish and sophisticated and not at all stuffy - we felt completely at home and wouldn’t hesitate to return. KEEP UP TO DATE WITH YOUR SUMMER MAINTENANCE. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Cut back early flowering perennials to the ground such as oriental poppies and delphiniums and they will send up fresh leaves and maybe even the bonus of some extra late-summer flowers. Give them a boost after pruning with a good soak of water and some tomato feed which is high in potash and will encourage flowers. 2. Remember that plants in containers are dependent on you for their water, as they will get little benefit from any rain unless it is steady and drenching. Give them a good soak at least once every other day in sunny weather and feed at least once a week to keep them giving colour. 3. In your pond, remove blanket weed. This will let oxygen into your pond for all the teaming water wildlife. Use a bamboo cane or a hazel stick to twist the blanket weed onto and then leave the weed on the edge of the pond for a day to allow aquatic life a chance to get back into the pond. 4. Dahlias are growing strongly now and need some help to keep blooming. While smaller Dahlias are self-standing, the tall varieties may need supporting with stakes – simply tie the stems to the stake with string to keep their flower heads up right. 5. Make sure you plant some later flowering perennials such as eupatorium, salvia or bergamot to give bees a nectar rich July and August. The main borders at Harlow Carr will give you loads of inspiration. 6. Collect the seed of flowers that you want to grow again next year. Store the seed in paper bags or envelopes, labelled with the plant name and harvest date, in a cool, dry place. Seed tins are available with compartments for you to sort into veg, perennial and tender annual seeds. 7. Hoe and hand-weed borders often, so weeds don’t have time to set seed, mulch in between plants with products such as ‘Strulch’ or ‘Blooming marvellous’ which will suppress weeds and stop soil drying out. 8. Water and feed sweet peas regularly, pick the flowers every few days, and remove seedpods to prolong flowering. Liquid seaweed feed will give you good results. 9. Similarly, feed and deadhead roses to keep them flowering strongly and wash away aphid infestations on the soft end growth to keep them healthy 10. Keep watch for pests such as lily beetles, snails, aphids and vine weevils, and remove before they do too much harm. Use beer traps around susceptible plants such as hostas. High yeast beers are the best to use as the yeast is the best attractant.

A community for life THE WARMTH, WELCOME AND SUPPORTIVE NATURE OF THE QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COMMUNITY LASTS LONG BEYOND THE TIME SPENT ON CAMPUS. s another school year starts to draw to a close, the Queen Ethelburga’s community is filled with the positive chatter of celebrating successes, students reminiscing over the memories made here and sharing excitement over the next steps being taken in the pathways to their future. One of QE’s core aims is to create a safe, happy and caring community in which students take pride in their endeavour and thrive, both mentally and physically. The school’s academic results speak for themselves but they are also set apart by the warmth, welcome and supportive nature of the community, lasting long beyond the time spent on campus, and as final year students leave them to officially become ‘Old Ethelburgians’. At QE, there are a number of memorable traditions. These have remained firm favourites of students, such as the annual school ghost production, celebrating QE’s birthday, battling it out in the annual school quiz and singing carols round the huge Christmas tree outside Thorpe Underwood Hall before sitting down for Christmas dinner. QE traditions bring students together from one generation to the next, uniting them in a common heritage and shared memories. Blending these traditions and family values with modern facilities and a

global outlook is central to the QE approach. The school welcomes girls and boys from three months and support them through four schools – Chapter House, King’s Magna, The College and The Faculty – to become successful independent adults who are well prepared for the future. QE students are without doubt their finest ambassadors. The Collegiate mission, the Hill Standard, is for all members of the community ‘to be the best that they can with the gifts that they have.’ QE are
delighted to be once again offering socially-distanced in-person campus tours to prospective families and, combined with a new range of online webinars, they can ensure that all families have a clear insight into how their child can flourish, and achieve their full potential, as part of the community at QE. The Queen Ethelburga’s Admissions Team can provide further information and help arrange a visit to see for yourself what makes them so special.Visit www.qe.org or email admissions@qe.org

Getting back to nature OPEN WATER, OR WILD, SWIMMING IS GREAT FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND GENERAL WELLBEING. LUCY JAMES LOOKS AT ITS INCREASING POPULARITY AND SOME LOCAL SPOTS TO GET STARTED. Words: Lucy James Selected photography: Mark Kleanthous
our first open water swim can be a real shock to the system. You may be dressed to the nines and have mentally prepared yourself for what you are about to undertake but when you take those first steps into a seemingly infinite expanse of ice cold water, your breath will literally be taken away. So why do people do it? Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a noticeable surge in the popularity of open water swimming with the lockdowns leading to many people across the UK participating in the sport, largely because swimming pools had been closed. A report published by Outdoor Swimmer in January, showed that 45 per cent of swimmers increased their amount of time swimming outdoors in 2020 alone, with 20 per cent of those starting the sport to improve their mental health and general wellbeing, and when the pools reopened, only two per cent of swimmers stopped open water swimming and went back into the indoor pools. Open water swimming has an abundance of health benefits, so it is no wonder why so many people have taken to their local waters, especially at this very difficult time. From getting fit to trying something new or getting closer to nature, people all over
Y
the country are taking the leap into the cold and it seems like the sport is only becoming more popular. Mark Kleanthous is an open water swimming coach working with all ages across the country. With 39 years of open water swimming experience, he said he began open water swimming after having a fear of water as a child. “I could not swim at school, I learnt to swim to complete a triathlon… I have competed in 525 triathlons in 39 consecutive years!” he proudly told me in an interview. “My first experience was petrifying; the cold water took my breath away; I thought I was going to die; then I soon realised I had survived the scary moment and started with a form of breaststroke which I did not know I could do, having never done breaststroke before.” Mark noticed the health benefits of open water swimming early on in his career. “Swimming in nature is my me time and my escape, not being bombarded by the internet and the frenetic fast pace of life and the instant demands the world now expects of each and everyone. I consider myself a positive person but when life gets in the way, when you feel you are on life’s treadmill that is going too fast, open water
swimming simply is being back with nature and is a reality check and slows down my speedy, busy mind… it’s my moving mediation,” he explains. “I like to vary my breathing pattern whilst swimming, slow and controlled in and out of mouth, or in and out of my nose. It certainly helps with my quality of sleep.” Not only is it relaxing and good for the mind, but Mark also feels proud of himself after a swim, saying he enjoys “the sound of my hands splashing and the sense of achievement as I glide through the water, passing by bushes and trees and looking back to see how far I have travelled.” Throughout Mark’s time as a swimming coach, he has come face to face with a wide range of wildlife from fish and seals to minks and warns swimmers to respect that they are swimming in their habitats. “I’ve been chased by an adult mink after its young followed me when swimming in a canal and another time, my body was covered with neoprene and the only part of me exposed to the cold water was my feet, imagine my shock when a crayfish started snapping on my toes – the only piece of my skin exposed!” he laughed.

Mark Kleanthous is an open water swimming coach
Swimming safely With a life dedicated to open water swimming, Mark has shared some of his advice to those wanting to start the sport. “Your first introduction to open water swimming should be with an open water swim coach, or an experienced open water swimmer,” he said .”Learn how to relax your breathing before getting out of your depth, then learn to float on your back. Inexperienced swimmers shouldn’t swim in open water with low energy levels or when they’re under a lot of stress as the cold water can heighten anxiety and create more stress rather than reduce it.” To stay safe, open water swimmers suggest that those looking to begin the sport, seek local swimming groups; Yorkshire has three main groups which cover outdoor swimming:Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers, Harrogate Triathlon Club and Blue Lagooners. Other open water swimmer’s safety tips include: 56 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
• Get to know the area and the condition of the water before swimming • Go fully equipped (waterproof bag for phone and car keys, energy bar, whistle, swim cap, tinted and anti-fog goggles, towels, float)
Mark and friends, Matt and Helen
• Avoid swimming alone, or let know someone know where you are and when you should be home, • Follow any signs; no swimming means it could be dangerous and, • Be prepared for the cold.

Where to swim With many open water swimming options being under and hour away by car, and easily accessed by public transport, here are three of the best outdoor swimming spots that are just a stone’s splash away from your doorstep.
Calmwater Bay Around three miles east of Harrogate, in the market town Knaresborough is Calm Water Bay Ski Club, the training waters for Harrogate Triathlon Club and surrounded by trees, the lake is a stunning and private place for open water swimming training sessions for those who are less confident going out swimming alone or without professionals. Although all swimmers must be members and must be able to swim 400m of continuous front crawl to
attend the swimming sessions, this is one of safest places to go for an open water swim.
Allerthorpe Lakeland Park Located around half an hour away from York’s city centre is Allerthorpe Lakeland Park, with a manmade lake that offers an open water swimming experience with no weeds and soft and sandy bottom. The lake has a maximum depth of 7ft and due its shallowness in comparison with other lakes in the area, it has been known to reach 28 degrees in the summer months. To swim at Allerthorpe Lakeland Park, there is no booking required but there is a payment at the reception upon arrival of £6 per swim, or £30 per for a membership.
Blue Lagooners About half an hour away from Leeds is
Yorkshire’s premier open water swimming venue, Blue Lagoon Diving and Leisure centre. The centre offers a safe way to go open water swimming with coaches and open water swimming experts on hand. With it being in a lagoon rather a lake, it is much smaller than the likes of the lakes at Allerthorpe Park, although it guarantees a safe and friendly swim for all of its members.
***
With such a diverse range of swimming locations in Yorkshire, there is something for everyone, but before diving in, be sure to read up on open water swimming beforehand to make your open water swimming experiences safe ones.
