Driving forward

s the weather starts to heat up, we need to think about adding some summer staples to our capsule wardrobes.

Hopefully the time for any kind of coat will soon be behind us, but keep in mind there will be cooler days and nights ahead of us, so you will still need something to keep off the chill. A neutral jacket or blazer will take the place of a more substantial coat and will elevate even the most casual look.

Linen is a summer staple which definitely deserves a place in your summer wardrobe. It’s a lightweight but substantial fabric that adds a touch of luxury to any outfit, without looking too formal. It can also be dressed up or down in a thousand different ways. I would definitely recommend you invest in a shirt, dress and a pair of trousers in this key summer fabric.

Lets’ chat beach essentials. You will need at least three pieces of swimwear for any week-long holiday. I would recommend at least one of these pieces being a swimsuit, as they can also double as a bodysuit to wear with your favourite trousers or skirt once the sun goes down. Not sure where to start? Here’s a handy checklist:

Jackets

A neutral jacket or blazer in a light colour like light khaki, beige, cream or off-white.

Shirts

A linen shirt is a fail safe summer must. Stick to neutral colours for wear everywhere appeal.

Knitwear

A light knit in a light fabric like cotton. Choose a colour which will add brightness or lightness to your wardrobe.

T-shirts & tank tops

Add some interest to your capsule wardrobe with a stripe in your preferred colourway. A classic breton stripe adds a little French touch to your look.

Trousers

Lightweight is best, in a light colour. Think linen, silk or viscose. A classic pair that are easy and breezy to wear.

Denim

Denim shorts are a wardrobe classic. Look for a length that suits your lifestyle.

TOP TIP: High waisted styles look great on most body shapes.

Beach shorts or skirt

Again linen is a great option for a summer short or skirt and in the case of beach shorts dries quickly too should they get them wet.

TOP TIP: Wrap style skirts work well on most body shapes.

Dressy shorts or skirt

Something that can be worn when the sun goes down. A light colour denim midi skirt with a central knee length split, works well for most occasions.

Dresses

Cotton, linen, silk or viscose in a short, midi or full length will take you from beach to bar with ease.

Beachwear

At least three pieces of swimwear including one swimsuit. At least three cover ups that you feel comfortable in. Look for belted styles to create a waist.

Shoes

A water proof beach shoe. A dressy strappy leather sandal for evenings out.

A flat sandal in a neutral leather like tan, beige or black.

Bags

A raffia beach bag is a must. Pick a size which will hold all of your essentials. A cross body bag in a light neutral colour for hands free activities. A clutch in an interesting fabric or print will add personality to your evening looks.
