as an estate agent in Harrogate WHY I LOVE MY JOB
By Carol Walker-Gunn, Preston Baker Associate.
absolutely love my job as an estate agent covering Harrogate and the surrounding areas; each day brings new challenges and opportunities, but the satisfaction of getting great results for my clients selling their homes makes it all worthwhile.
I have worked as an estate agent in the Harrogate area for many years and it’s a privilege to do this job; it’s a way to contribute to the community and its growth.
Selling a home and moving can be a stressful time, and it’s my job to remove as much of the stress as possible for my clients. From meeting new people to navigating the intricacies of the property market, no two days are the same. The blend of historic charm and modern amenities in Harrogate makes it a vibrant and dynamic place to live and work, and I

My day starts with an early morning walk through the picturesque Valley Gardens with my little dog Nelly. Watching the sun rise over Harrogate, the fresh morning air, and stunning scenery, provide the perfect backdrop to clear my mind and prepare for a busy day ahead.

“Carol is extremely proactive, delves into all the details about a new homes’ development and the individual properties, so she knows everything there is to know to fully inform potential buyers. When it comes to sales progression, she ensures everything is covered 100 per cent, and keeps me informed every step of the way. I couldn’t ask for more.”

She helps by alleviating some of the pressure by taking all the viewings and negotiating the sale and/ or purchase price with us at the centre of the decision making. Next, I have a series of viewing appointments scheduled. Showing potential buyers around properties is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Whether it’s a charming Victorian terrace or a modern new build, I enjoy highlighting the unique features of each home and helping clients envision themselves living there. Colour TRENDS
Design Tonic’s Amanda Cook gives us the lowdown on her three favourite palettes.
nderstanding contemporary colour trends is key to creating eyecatching spaces – but choosing a scheme for your home or work space that will stay stylish is no easy thing.
Good job we’ve got Design Tonic’s Amanda Cook to advise!
Here, she gives the lowdown on how to nail her three favourite palettes…
Magazines and social media are
Earthy Neutrals
There’s been a big move towards using shades from the natural world that comfort and calm.
Easy to live with, earthy palettes aren’t limited to the pale and interesting - you can use all kinds of nature-inspired shades, from warm beiges to rich clays; airy
pastels to chocolate browns. To lift these looks, textural
walls and cement make great pairings.
And try playing with the colour of your ceiling - a deep hue looks supermodern against softer tones below.
Dark and Decadent
The perfect backdrop to maximalist style, dark, characterful colour isn’t going anywhere.
Certain spaces can handle moody colour better than others - it works especially well in cosy rooms you use in the evenings.
If black walls are too much for you, try a softer option - think rich browns, midnight blues and greens with so much depth they look almost black themselves.
And it might go against your instincts, but rooms which are dark anyway can (taking one shade across walls, woodwork and ceiling), which blurs the edges and gives the illusion of spaciousness.
Punchy Pastels
Playful, uplifting pastels are guaranteed to raise a smile - and mid-shade hues are
These happy pops of colour look particularly good in living spaces, kitchens and bathrooms and, if you choose shades that are tonally similar, they’ll happily mix together.
To ground these saturated shades?
Pair them with natural materials - they look great against soft timber, original stone and brickwork details.
And, whichever palette you pick, don’t lots of lush greenery!
Advertising works in the region’s premier glossy lifestyle magazines…
... Just ask Matt the Baker!
“I booked the cover and two pages of advertising in Westside magazine's March edition and have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of business we have received from it. Two large companies have now started placing orders with us. They have become great accounts and both stated they saw the piece in the magazine and got in touch.
The process with Richard and the team couldn't have been any more simple from start to finish and was really impressed by the operation they ran. We will definitely be advertising again.”

Destination BAWTRY
With a wealth of independent shops, bars and restaurants, and events throughout the year, it’s no surprise there’s a constant buzz about this Doncaster town.
Located just eight miles southeast of Doncaster, Bawtry has a reputation for being an attractive and vibrant place to live. It was recently voted one of the ‘Top 25 Places to Buy a House’ by the Sunday Times – and with good reason. With its wealth of independent bars, shops and restaurants, not to mention a thriving community scene, it’s not only popular with residents
It was in 2011 that a group of Bawtry retailers decided to join forces to promote the town as a premier destination, both locally and nationally, for shopping, socialising and business. Since then, the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) has with a dynamic retail association which which there are currently over 60.
Chaired by Ross Jarvie, BRA hosts a series of events throughout the year, including Bawtry Arts Festival (17-23 June), which is run by the Bawtry Arts Festival Group whom BRA support, two
Classic and Sports Car Festivals (29 May and 1 September), and a Christmas Time Event (1 December).
“We liaise with other business organisations in the town and invite them to speak to our members to provide news, updates and useful information,” said Ross.
“These include Bawtry Town Council (BTC) Doncaster Council, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and Doncaster Racecourse. We have also forged a link situated in the town.
“Whilst the aim is to drive forward the day and night time economy of Bawtry we realise that by working with partners in the Doncaster area we can achieve more placing Bawtry and Doncaster on the map.”
At present, BRA are working hard to
coming months will be welcoming both The Pantry and Fairfax & Favor. Other success stories include the Hummingbird Collective, a collection of creative businesses sharing one space, who have recently opened in The Courtyard and are
hosting a series of pop-up markets there, celebrating and showcasing all things small and independent (27 July and 10 August).
Alongside the wealth of retail and hospitality businesses, Bawtry is home to two award-winning wedding venues, as well as its own hotel, and arts and culture is covered by the Phoenix Theatre, home to Bawtry Dramatic Society. Long-standing business include Yasmine, which celebrated 50 years last month, and Yorkshire
started trading 93 years ago.
Historically, Bawtry’s origins can be traced back to Roman times, when it was an important settlement on the road
between Doncaster and Lincoln. In 616 AD, the Anglo-Saxon King Aethelfrith died in battle against Raedwald, King of East Anglia, by the River Idle at Bawtry.
Evidence suggests that St Nicholas’s Church century, a time when the area was called Baltry (it became Bautre in the 17th century). While the village originally lay in Nottinghamshire, boundary changes before the Norman conquest moved it just inside the West Riding of Yorkshire.
The town grew as a river port and as a local commercial centre and stopping point between Doncaster and Retford. By the mid-14th century, the port was exporting wool and other items overseas. Meanwhile, the Hospital of St Mary Magdalene was founded, which survived until the 18th century.
In more recent times, Bawtry Hall was the base for RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the headquarters of RAF Strike Command.

Edwards & Walker Opticians, Doncaster. See what eye care should be.
here’s nothing routine about a visit to Edwards & Walker
Opticians in Doncaster. This is an optician’s that do things differently to your everyday high-street optician, providing an oasis of calm in our busy lives. Step into their newly-refurbished practice on Priory Place and you will be greeted by a team that immediately put you at ease, taking the time to understand your needs, your preferences and your lifestyle. This is because they believe your eyes and your style deserve nothing but the best.
Edwards & Walker was established in Doncaster city centre in 1973 and was taken over by Dr Pretty Basra in 2015. Over the last nine years, Dr Basra has built
accessible eye care for all the family.
“At the heart of our opticians lies our purpose – to give as many people as possible the gift of great sight,” said Dr
Basra. “We fuse expertise, care, quality and love to craft an eye care and style experience that transcends the ordinary.”
Dr Basra used her own experience as a catalyst to develop a passion for optometry. Aged eight years old and concerned about her own eyesight, she walked to an opticians in town - without telling her parents – and begged for an eye test. Her family didn’t feel she had any issues with her eyesight and didn’t see the need for an eye exam. However, after convincing her mother to sign the consent form – she told her that it was for a school trip – she then rushed back to the opticians who found that she did indeed have a prescription.
“After I got my glasses, I remember looking at the sky and seeing the clouds –I’d never seen them before,” said Dr Basra. “It showed me just how important sight is and that you don’t know what you can’t see until you see it.”
Now with a career spanning over 20 years, Dr Basra is the consultant optometrist and children’s vision specialist at Edwards & Walker. She previously worked at the prestigious Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and is one of the most respected optometrists in her profession, having twice been recognised
UK at the National Optician Awards.
A mother to three children, Dr Basra recently completed her doctorate, having written a thesis on how children’s vision screening at school can be improved and standardised in the UK. She juggled her thesis write up with taking on a new business and becoming a new mum.
In fresh and modern surroundings, Edwards & Walker offer the complete package of services, from routine eye tests to state-of-the-art retinal scanning, contact
services are delivered by a hand-picked, all-female team, who all genuinely care about the service you receive. Optical consultants Wendy and Emily, trainee dispensing optician Lily are supported by optical/social media assistant Jess and front of house, Soriya.
An essential eye test is designed to assess your vision and overall eye health whilst a premium test adds a binocular vision assessment, colour vision assessment and a state-of-the-art optical CT scan. This allows the team to see the back of the eye in-depth and can help identify the earliest signs of eye diseases.
“Regular eye tests are hugely important in making sure your eyes are healthy,” added Dr Basra. “They’re also vital for detecting signs of any underlying
conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and glaucoma as well as many other conditions.”
The dispensing part of the opticians is known as The Eye Lounge, a relaxing
space where you can enjoy a barista drink or a glass of bubbles. The staff will sit
your personality. This is in addition to a separate, dedicated children’s area.

“At Edwards & Walker, we believe style has to come with substance,” said Dr Basra. “That’s why we offer the latest in lens technology – from crystal clear vision providing sharpness and clarity to thin and lightweight materials reducing the bulkiness of glasses, our range of lens options have been chosen to make adaptation easy and enhance your visual experience and comfort.”
To enhance their service even further, the Edwards & Walker Club is an exclusive loyalty programme (from £11 per month)
per cent off designer brands; free loss, theft and accidental damage cover; free yearly eye test and emergency care; advanced screening on the house; unlimited repairs aftercare.

once again FLYING
After a period of renovation, the iconic Flying Pizza by San Carlo is back and better than ever, writes Ross Heppenstall.
San Carlo Flying Pizza, the beloved Leeds institution, reopened its doors on 24 May following a stunning £2million refurbishment. And what an amazing revamp it has proven to be.
When it closed in January this year, the legendary Italian restaurant in Roundhay promised to blend its rich local heritage with modern sophistication, ensuring it remained a cherished destination for both locals and visitors.
It has done that and more. Despite living visit to this delightful establishment in a well-heeled part of town.
on the Leeds dining and social scene since its foundation in 1974 before becoming part of the San Carlo group in 2010.
But it goes deeper. It was hugely popular in Leeds and beyond for so many years, a magnet for sporting stars and celebrities; the place to see and be seen in.
Situated on Street Lane in the heart of Roundhay, the restaurant is already packed when my dining partner and I arrive for our 6.30pm booking on a Friday evening.
I am told the Flying Pizza has been full to bursting since its reopening seven days earlier and it is easy to see why.
The buzz and the atmosphere inside is incredible – it can now accommodate up to 130 guests and tables are at a premium.
Immediately upon arrival, you just know you are entering somewhere special.
Guests are greeted by an ambiance that
the premises to highlight the restaurant’s Italian roots.
The interior revamp includes an array of retro touches and bespoke artwork from local artists, enhancing the cultural and community ties of the establishment.
A standout feature is the new neon signage and a fully refurbished bar, which are set to become focal points of the venue.
installation pays tribute to the restaurant’s long-standing tradition, adding a touch of
the sea to the landlocked location.
Daniele Atzori, Flying Pizza’s loquacious general manager, is warm, welcoming and utterly charming.
passionate about his job and restaurant he manages.
Daniele gives us a little background on the refurbishment and points to the
retractable roof on the outside terrace, which allows diners to tuck into their pasta, pizza and steaks in the sunshine.
He is keen to stress that, while the restaurant is owned by the hugely successful San Carlo group, its identity as the Flying Pizza remains very much intact. That is clear by all the signage and menu bearing the restaurant’s famous name.
I feel like Henry Hill in the classic Italian a table which provides a perfect vantage point of the evening as it unfolds.
Daniele’s team of staff buzz around relentlessly, greeting customers, taking orders, kissing them goodbye in some cases when they leave (on both cheeks, of course).
Bonhomie is everywhere. My partner and I opt for a pint of Peroni as we pore over the new summer menu, available across all San Carlo locations.
The menu showcases fresh, meticulously crafted dishes that remain true to the restaurant’s Italian roots.
What better way to start our meal than the true Italian way?
We opted for a large plate of antipasto, a range of delicious cold meats representing the regional tastes of Italy, to share.
That starter is priced at a very reasonable for two, priced at £16.95, this includes deep fried calamari, prawns, scampi and scallops served with tartare sauce and garlic chilli mayonnaise.
There is also a wide range of Italian bread and we opted for a Garlic Bread with Tomato to share at £7.25.
A quick glance around the Flying Pizza – and the lavish cars parked outside –suggests that the majority of their clientele have plenty of cash to splash.
But their prices are in no way for steak, on Daniele’s recommendation.
I chose Tagliata Di Filetto Di Manzo, an fresh Italian dressing at £35.95, and my friend opts for the Rib-Eye Steak at £28.95. With two side dishes each to share – fries at £5, Tenderstem Broccoli with garlic
and chilli at £5.95, Patate Arrosto (sautéed potatoes with bacon, onion and rosemary) at £4.95 and Piselli con Pancetta (peas with onions, pancetta and a touch of cream at £5.25) – these really were the perfect meals.
Our steaks were cooked to perfection and with a bottle of red – Valpolicella Classico went down a treat.
The longer we are here, the more of a privilege it feels.
One of our friendly young waiters tells of how, since the Flying Pizza reopened just a week earlier, they have already had several thousand guests through their doors.
He also name drops a few Leeds United establishment.
After our delicious starter and main courses, Daniele insists we scour the dessert menu and the list is impressive with a range of cakes, ice creams and traditional Italian puddings.
I order the cheesecake, which tastes divine, and my friend goes for Crème Brûlée, both priced at £8.
Fifty years since it was founded and it is safe to say that the Flying Pizza is well and truly back – and better than ever. On its 50th anniversary, it remains iconic.

Farm shop planning granted to farmer who has recently won national
David Rawlings, a dedicated Yorkshire farmer, has received the green light for a new farm shop and café near Wetherby. This exciting development comes on the heels of a prestigious win at the British Farming Awards, where David was honoured with award in 2023. The British Farming and popularity in recent years, thanks in no small part to the acclaimed show
David’s journey is a testament to innovation and resilience. His 450-acre farm, once solely dedicated to growing wheat, oil seed rape, barley, and potatoes,
From running a small crop spraying business and raising bed and breakfast pigs in the farm’s historic buildings, David has continually sought ways to breathe new life into his land.
The turning point came with a strategic decision to diversify. In 2010, David opened Priory Barn and Cottages, a wedding venue nestled within the stunning Yorkshire countryside. The venue, comprising a beautifully converted barn, a marquee, and seven charming cottages, has become a beloved location for couples to celebrate their special day. Each cottage, available for year-round stays, adds a touch of rustic elegance to the tranquil courtyard setting.
Building on this success, David ventured into the world of spirits. Inspired by the potatoes grown on his farm, he launched Priory Vodka in 2016. This crisp and refreshing potato vodka is
a labour of love, crafted from seed to bottle on the farm and enriched by fresh local spring water. David envisions his vodka as a spirit that could have been enjoyed by the many generations that have walked the grounds of the historic Syningthwaite Priory, which dates back to the early 12th century.
Not stopping there, David embraced the natural beauty of his land by creating Wighill Park Glamping. Starting with just six pods, the glamping site has expanded to twelve pods and now includes two exclusive Shepherds Huts, The Nest and The Nook. Nestled in ancient woodland on the edge of the historic Lord Hawke
cricket pitch, widely cited as the birthplace of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the glamping experience combines the charm of nature with the comfort of modern amenities, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable stay.
In 2024, David launched Home Farm Produce Co., showcasing the wonderful meat produce from the animals reared on the farm, including heritage Hereford cattle. This new venture further highlighted the farm’s dedication to quality and sustainability, with a true farm to fork ethos.
The next natural step in this journey was the farm shop. David, with his son James, pursued planning permission for a farm shop and café in Walton, near Wetherby. The proposal was approved after demonstrating the potential to provide local jobs and offer a convenient outlet for farm produce and everyday goods to the growing residential community. The farm shop aims to showcase the best of the farm’s produce, while also supporting other local farmers.
David’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep connection to the land. Each new venture is intertwined with the original farm, ensuring that every project supports and enhances the other. The farm remains the golden thread running through all David’s enterprises, preserving its legacy while forging a path for the future – and he can’t wait to welcome you to the new farm shop very soon.

A taste of SUMMER
Bright, airy and in the perfect spot to explore North Yorkshire, Richard Abbey visits Dewars Restaurant & Rooms.
Everything looks better in the sunshine, fact. Those little rays often highlight the very best features and this is certainly true of Dewars Restaurant & Rooms, which can be found in the little North Yorkshire village of Kirby Misperton.
As we arrived for an early evening dinner, we were welcomed by an inviting outdoor swimming pool, charming terrace and gorgeous landscaped gardens. After being seated in the orangery, with glorious views over the gardens, it really felt like a little luxury oasis in this part of the county.
But to be honest, I think Dewars Restaurant & Rooms would still look fantastic, whatever the weather. The 19room hotel, restaurant and bar has recently been renovated and still retains much of that newness. The brickwork to the building is immaculate, grass freshly cut and there’s not a stone out of place in the gravelcovered car park.
have been better.
Kirby Misperton is located just off the A169 Malton to Pickering road and is perhaps best known for being the home to Flamingoland. Indeed, the entrance to the theme park sits almost opposite to that of Dewars but the venue can serve as a perfect
It’s almost equidistant to both Malton and Pickering and close by are Castle Howard, Yorkshire Lavender and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. York is only 30 minutes away and the east coast resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey under an hour’s drive.
The 19 rooms at Dewars have all been individually designed, some of which overlook the pool. Packages are available which means you can use the heated pool and poolside sauna alongside a meal at the venue.
As tempted as I was to dive right in, sadly, we were only here for dinner – but that’s a good think and one which should be experience. Head chef Rob has curated menus that showcase the best of Yorkshire, with traditional, seasonal, and classic dishes prepared using locally sourced ingredients.
Lunch is served 12-4pm, dinner 4-8pm and Sunday lunch (12-4pm) also comes highly recommended.
The spring-summer menu that we sampled included dishes such as scallops, saffron ravioli and maple-braised belly pork but we decided to start with some still-warm homemade ale and black treacle bread (£3), served with salted butter, before moving onto Champagne tempura oysters (£12) and pearl barley risotto (£11).
Served in their shells, the oysters were a delicious light and summery serving, complemented by pieces of grapefruit cured salmon, spiced gazpacho and pickled
fennel. The risotto was a heartier dish given and celeriac and sage velouté. A good start. I followed my oysters with more seafood inspiration, this time in the form of wild sea bass (£26), which was served with a basil (roasted, grated and pureed) and a ‘bisqueskin and paired well with the fragrant sauce
My wife chose the Yorkshire Dales lamb rump (£27) which was accented by a crispy mutton belly parcel, buttered savoy cabbage and nettle and mint emulsion. Again, it

contrasting desserts. Sticky toffee pudding (£6.50) served with salted caramel sauce and rum and raisin ice cream was rich and indulgent whilst a frozen lemon curd (£6.50) was fresh and light and given extra zing from a passionfruit and coconut ice
cream as well as plenty of sweetness from a lightly-torched meringue.
Dewars Restaurant & Rooms is a real destination venue. Not only does it provide the perfect base from which to explore this part of North Yorkshire but is stylish, welcoming and has lots of character. We had a sneak preview of several of the impressive rooms as well as taking respite in the charming bar area. There’s also a ‘den’ if you prefer somewhere a bit quieter, which sits between the bar and restaurant. But if the sun shines, make the most of the delightful gardens and maybe pack your swimming costume, just in case.

LTake the HIGH ROAD
dream of taking his family on a road trip around Scotland.
ike a lot of visitors to Scotland, my previous incursions north of the border had been limited to the two main cities – Glasgow and Edinburgh. But as good as they are, they offer only a taste of what the rest of the country has to offer.
Keen to explore, I talked my family into taking, some might say, an epic road trip and over eight days we covered in excess of 400 miles, from Dumfries and Glasgow in the south-west up to Nairn and Inverness in the north, Aviemore and the Cairngorms in the middle and Edinburgh in the south-east.
We saw lochs, mountains and glens, experienced snow, sunshine and rain, and loved every minute. We walked – averaging 13,500 steps daily – cycled, and drove our way around the most stunning scenery

The black exterior was in-keeping with the hotel’s contemporary theme which featured a lobby and bar dominated by exposed concrete and pipework in contrast to cosy, spacious rooms. We stayed in a signature twin which had two double beds, a fridge, microwave and kettle, huge walk-in shower and plenty of room for four. The four-star hotel has an on-site bar and restaurant –Chop Grill & Bar – which also serves a very good breakfast to set you up for the day ahead.
We were well-fuelled by the time we hit the road and headed north to Fort William,
which took us over one of Scotland’s bestknown and picturesque roads – the Glencoe pass. This stunning section of road takes you past the ‘Three Sisters’ and mountain resort and is simply breath-taking.
Fort William sits on the banks of Loch Linnhe and is backed by the Grampian mountain range, of which Ben Nevis stands the tallest. It’s the perfect spot from which to explore, whether you’re into walking

Nairn is home to Crerar Hotel’s Golf View Hotel & Spa, which overlooks the Moray Firth and is sandwiched between two quality golf courses – Nairn Golf Club and Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.
We were wowed by its beachfront location and the quality of the accommodation. Our sea view ‘feature’

liked personal touches such as the ‘Golf View Gazette’ which had been personalised to each guest and featured information about the hotel as well as weather report and availability in the restaurant and spa.
The treatment rooms for the Coast Spa were fully booked on the day of our visit but we did make use of the pool as well as the sauna, steam and hydrotherapy rooms.
Breakfast at Golf View is taken in the Hickory restaurant and is served a la carte. As well as pastries, fruit and charcuterie, we tucked into very good dishes of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, smoked haddock and French toast, washed down with very good Scottish tea.
From Nairn we headed south to Aviemore, which sits at the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. But before we
explored the town, popular with snow and outdoor enthusiasts, we headed a little further to Kingussie and the Highland Wildlife Park.
Part of RZSS (Royal Zoological Society of Scotland), the park is home to 19 different species of animal including wolverines, amur tigers, polar bears, snow leopards and grey wolves. The park also has a drive-through reserve where you can get close to European bison, red deer, Przewalski’s horse and vicuna. It was a great way to spend a few hours and son.
In Aviemore we added a little adventure to our holiday by hiring bikes. In Your Element (IYE), based in Rothiemurchus, has a full range of bikes to hire, including brand new e-bikes, and offers other activities such canoeing, white water sledging, gorge walking and axe throwing. IYE was established in 2003 and has
activity bases in the Inverness and Loch Ness area, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Fort William and Lochaber and around Loch Tay.
My wife and I took advantage of the e-bikes, which were Marin Rift Zone E1s and had 11 gears as well as a 630WH battery, whilst my children had conventional hardtail Marin mountain bikes. Staff at IYE set up the suspension for each rider and gave us a run through of how they worked, kitted us out with helmets and then sent us on our way. There are some pre-determined trails to follow; we opted for the 13-mile round trip to Glenmore which followed an old logging trail and was relatively easy going on mainly gravel track. Cold and wet weather proved to be no obstacle and we thoroughly enjoyed our three hours or so heading through the forests and glens of the Cairngorms with the snow-covered peaks as our backdrop.
From Aviemore we headed further south on the A9, literally driving through the clouds to arrive at Fonab Castle Hotel just outside Pitlochry. Nestled in the
property is the height of luxury and has been lovingly restored to combine historic features with contemporary touches. Complementing the 42 bedrooms is a 3 AA Rosette restaurant and a spa complex. We stayed in the newer Woodland Wing
Faskally and loved all the comforts it provided, including Egyptian cotton sheets, Nespresso coffee machines and toiletries from Temple Spa. Each guest was provided with a robe and slippers and there was even an umbrella in each room in case you wanted to venture outside – much-needed on our visit due to the wet and windy weather.
Two dining options are available at Fonab; the more formal Sandemans restaurant which is housed in the original part of 19th century castle and serves a seven-course tasting menu, or 1892 on the Loch, a more relaxed brasserie-style restaurant. We opted for the latter and tucked into excellent dishes of Cumbrae oysters, pumpkin and sage ravioli, Loch Etive trout and Perthshire red deer. We
heading upstairs to the bar to sample some local whiskies – I recommend the Edradour, a small batch whisky made just down the road in Pitlochry which is aged in Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks.
From Pitlochry we headed further south to Edinburgh, crossing the Forth road bridge, and spent a couple of days exploring the shops and tourist sites before heading home.

S Nordic INSPIRATION
ince opening on Vicar Lane, Leeds four years ago, northhome has been transforming spaces and enriching lives with its curated collection of Nordicinspired homewares.
But now it’s on the move.
Before relocating to its new permanent premises in the iconic County Arcade, northhome has temporarily relocated to Victoria Gate whilst work is ongoing. This new store will offer much more than interiors and homewares and will include gourmet food and skincare, as well showrooms and display spaces for brands already familiar to customers old and new.

“We are here with the mission, to curate a unique interior for people to feel at home. With the above in mind, we look for designers whose products are inspired by traditional and usable designs while respecting their history but always giving them a modern look and feel.
“Timeless design is a core belief for us as we are not into fast trends or throwaway culture, we believe that an item should last a lifetime - or very close.”

northhome started out as a sort of happy accident. It was essentially a shelf of products in Fettle, an independent restaurant in Leeds until then owners Kamil and Simon were asked so often by diners if they could buy Fint’s crockery they began taking orders. Its online shop launched in June 2020 with the brickand-mortar shop following not long after.
In 2024, Kamil has seen a shift in Nordic style and design with playful shapes, bursts of colour, and a perfect blend of the classic and the contemporary.
Interior trends have included the by nature, soothe the senses and promote a feeling of calm and well-being in our living spaces.
Curves have also become more apparent; these inviting forms soften any space, and the introduction of orangered colours radiate personality. From subtle terracotta accents to a statement piece in cherry red, these colours offer a playful twist on Scandi minimalism.
“While the clean lines and focus on functionality remain, bold colours, aesthetic,” concluded Kamil.
Until the new shop opens its doors, pop into Victoria Gate and set about transforming your space. After all, your home is your slice of paradise.

Discover the ‘Wonder of Pollen’
Explore the fascinating world of pollen with a brand new exhibition on display throughout the grounds of RHS Garden Harlow Carr.
Pollen is amazing. It’s beautiful, nearly indestructible and unless it’s making you sneeze, you might not give it much thought, but it is so much more than a pesky allergen. Pollen can shed light on stories from history and honey to hay fever and horticulture, it’s critically important in our lives, the natural world, and the sciences which study it.
The brand new exhibition at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, which runs until September, will bring visitors into pollen’s microscopic world to help reveal the huge roles it plays in ours. With fascinating images and 3D-printed pollen models, we hope it will help visitors discover the wonder of pollen in new and memorable ways.
Displayed across eight panels throughout the garden, the 3D pollen models are produced using a technique called confocal laser scanning microscopy, which takes dozens of thin crosssection images through a pollen grain then uses them to reconstruct a model of its surface. These surface models can then be 3D-printed. The exhibition also showcases ultra-high-

Colour Run Raises Almost £15,000 at Brontë House School
In May, all the children at Brontë House School took part in a colour run as part of their annual school fundraising effort.
The youngest pupils in Ashdown Lodge took part in a t shirt parade before their run, whilst Year 1 and upwards enjoyed a full paint run in the sunshine with staff and parent support.
It was an incredible afternoon, helped by beautiful weather and it was amazing to see the school community pulling together to raise money for Breast Cancer Now – a charity that has touched the lives of many of the school’s families, particularly this year. The total currently stands at almost £15,000 raised so far – and still rising.
Wellbeing Day
Last month saw a transformation of the green spaces at Montagu Hospital, as colleagues from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) and Integrated Health Projects (IHP) Vinci dedicated a day to sprucing up the hospital grounds.
As part of a workplace wellbeing initiative aimed at enhancing colleague mental health and wellbeing, the ‘Workplace in Bloom’ project was a collaborative effort between DBTH departments and their construction partners, with the team working on the new Montagu Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) and temporarily swap their construction tools for gardening equipment.
During the event, the team revitalised the Fred and Ann Green Memorial Garden near the hospital entrance, restoring the area which had come under disrepair for a number of years. The work included trimming bushes and shrubs, sanding and varnishing benches, and jet washing patios.
Additionally, other green areas were given attention, with large previously under-utilised strip of land was sown with seeds to and colleagues at the Trust, and providing habitats for pollinating insects and bees.
