EATING OUT

Relax in style THERE ARE PLENTY OF REASONS TO CELEBRATE AT ERIC’S, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. hen we arrived in Lindley, a smart suburb north-west of Huddersfield town centre, the Union Jack flags were already flying proudly along the main road in preparation for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The whole village seems to have got in on the act and Eric’s is no exception, providing Windsor afternoon teas (£20pp) on Saturday 4 June, the perfect way to mark Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne. The restaurant opened in Lindley in November 2010 and has become an integral part of the community - it’s easy to see why. Chef-proprietor Eric Paxman set out to create a relaxed, bistro-style venue which he’s achieved in some style. It’s a charming place, set over two floors with high-end decor that blends modern blues, golds and geometric patterns with exposed brick walls and roof beams and plenty of plants and flowers. It’s homely without being too unobtrusive and the perfect place to while away a couple of hours or more. Eric certainly has pedigree having worked with Marco Pierre White at L’Escargot and under Bill Grainger during a stay in Sydney, Australia but always dreamed of having his own restaurant. He’s used these influences to craft a seasonal menu that features everything from French classics to pan-Asian fare. Eric’s is currently also the North East’s Regional Restaurant of the Year, as voted for by readers of the Good Food Guide, so expectations were high on the evening of our visit. Stepping in off the street and into the bar area we were greeted by our waiter for the evening and shown upstairs to our table in an already bustling restaurant. My wife couldn’t resist a Mermaid pink gin (£6.50 single) while we perused the menu that including both a la carte and prix fixe options. There’s a decent wine list with over 50 bottles too.

EATING OUT

I opted for the fixed menu, which offers two courses for £25 and three for £30, which seemed a real bargain. There was a good choice, with six starters, six mains and six desserts, plus a cheese board option. Shallow fried braised ox cheek fritter with candied golden beetroot and summer slaw was as robust a starter as you’re likely to get and didn’t disappoint. The meaty fritter had a crisp exterior and was well complemented by the accompanying beetroot and raita-style sauce. I followed this with the fish of the day, a butter-roasted fillet of hake served with lobster, prawn, leek and tomato risotto and wild garlic mayo (£3 supplement). It was delicious; the meaty fish was well cooked but the risotto was the real star of the show, marrying all the flavours together beautifully. A glass of Romans Bay sauvignon blanc, South Africa (£6.90 medium glass) complement the fish nicely. Portion sizes were just right and left plenty of room for dessert, on this occasion a cherry Bakewell tart, creme anglaise and strawberry ice cream, which was sweet and indulgent as it should be. A strong espresso finished proceedings for me. Across the table my wife chose to go a la carte and selected from a menu which was much more substantial with eight starters, eight mains and eight desserts, plus optional side dishes (£4). She started with a personal favourite, pan roast king scallops which on this occasion were served with a Whitby crab Waldorf salad, pickled grapes, dill, lemon and ginger mayo and toasted walnuts (£16). The scallops were cooked well,

lovely and plump, with the crab adding extra sweetness and walnuts some texture to the dish. It all worked really well with strong summery flavours. Next up was chargrilled fillet of venison, wild mushroom tortellini, black truffle, spinach, caramelised onions and Yorkshire blue cheese (£32). With truffle, blue cheese and mushroom there were some strong flavours on the plate but neither overpowered the other, it was well balanced and worked well with the venison, which was appetisingly pink. A glass of Doña Paula Mendoza malice, Argentina (£10.10 large glass) complemented the dish expertly. Also leaving room for dessert, my wife finished with a classic sticky toffee pudding, butterscotch sauce, vanilla ice cream (£8), which was everything you would expect and more. It was a delicious end to what had been a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Eric’s is a restaurant for all occasions, serving lunches including on Sundays,

and offers outside catering for your events. As well as the Jubilee afternoon tea they have a number of special events coming up over the summer; first up is Father’s Day on 19 June (£40pp three courses) as well as ‘Inspired by…’ evenings which take diners on culinary journeys to Seville (30 June), Santiago (21 July) and Siena (18 August) and are priced £45pp for six courses. There’ll be a bank holiday Monday brunch (29 August) too. Eric’s 75 Lidget Street, Lindley Huddersfield, HD3 3JP Tel: 01484 646416 www.ericsrestaurant.co.uk

Lots to love THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF PRAISE FOR LEEDS’S THARAVADU. WILL RICHARD ABBEY JOIN THE LIST OF ADMIRERS? raise, and accolades, have not been in short supply for Tharavadu, a hugely-popular South Indian restaurant located near the train station on Mill Hill. Having been open for eight years, it remains the only Indian restaurant in Leeds to be featured in the Michelin Guide, Good Food Guide UK and Hardens Restaurant Guide and has received individual praise from the likes of Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma, and The Walking Dead actor, Andrew Lincoln, for example. I could go on. The restaurant, which is housed over two floors, specialises in the cuisine of Kerala, the south-western region of India that is known as the ‘Land of Spices’ because it traded spices with Europe as well as with many other ancient civilisations. Rice forms the backbone of the cuisine and is served with most meals but you’ll also find lots of fish Kerala has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline - as well as red meat.

P

“Tharavadu, is a place where you will experience the flavours of traditional Kerala cooking,” said Siby Jose. “The chefs are born and brought up in Kerala

and have numerous years of experience in this traditional way of cooking so there will be no compromise on the quality. You can say without any doubt it

EATING OUT

will be the best Indian restaurant in town, a change to the normal curry house.” Indeed it’s satisfyingly different. There are no karais, no baltis and certainly no chicken tikka masala. Instead you’ll find a menu made up of soups, starters, dosa, curries, thalis and rice and bread dishes. If you’ve never eaten at a South Indian restaurant before, it can be a little bit of a journey into the unknown but is one worth taking, especially when you’re aided by the extremely helpful and

knowledgable staff at the restaurant. We trusted them to make our choices for us and they didn’t disappoint. Arriving at an already busy restaurant, my dining companion and I were shown to a table in the upstairs part of the restaurant where we were left to relax and take in our surroundings. The orange and green colours of the exterior are complemented by a largely wooden interior that in turn is accented by traditional idols and paintings, including gorgeous backdrops of the ocean, fields and mountains of the Kerala region. There are two bars at the restaurant which both stock a good variety of drinks including Somarasam, Tharavadu’s house pilsner which has been made in conjunction with Kirkstall Brewery (£5.15 pint). It was a tasty drop, not to gassy, and the perfect accompaniment to the food that was about to arrive at our table. On recommendation we started with, and shared, plates of Thakarppan Kozhi (£8.45) and Kidilan Erachi (£8.90). The first dish translated as marinated chicken slices which had been grilled and served with chef ’s special sauce. It was a mildtasting dish with subtle spicing but really set apart by the accompanying coriander and mint dip which was incredibly moreish. According to our menu, Kidilan Erachi is a famous dish in a Thattu Kada (Kerala version of street food) and toddy shop (local pubs of Kerala); packing more heat than the chicken, these lamb cubes,

cooked in freshly ground spices and sautéed with onions and curry leaves, were incredibly tender and paired incredibly well with the Somarasam. We followed these starters with a chef ’s special chicken dish – Pedappan Kozhi (£17.45). This was served with chef Nair’s ‘magical’ gravy as well as a side dish of potatoes and chick peas and a crunchy salad as well as boiled rice. The sauce was indeed magical - slightly sweet and sour with a hint of spice – and just delicious. Pothu Ularthiyathu (£19.70) is made with beef and the most well-known, sought-after dish of a traditional Sunday lunch back in Kerala. It is believed that people buy fresh beef from the village butcher on the way back home after morning mass and cook it using a traditional recipe. Tharavadu has recreated the dish at its best – except in buying beef after mass. The result was a rich, earthy almost stew-like dish with, again, flavours that were more subtle than overpowering. The Pothu Ularthiyathu was also

served with a side dish of potatoes and chick peas and a crunchy salad as well as really interesting bread which had been sliced, twisted and deep-fried. Think crisp, savoury churros and you’re about half-way there. Such were the portion sizes we had no need for extra rice or bread but finished with an espresso and peppermint tea. Given our experience, it’s easy to see why Tharavadu is so highly thought of. Lovely atmosphere, great service and food that offers something a little different - and is totally delicious. This year’s event - the seventh - will take place between 22-25 September and will showcase four keynote speakers and six panels at the Howard Assembly Room and Howard Opera Centre. With tickets for the keynote speakers - Aisling Bea, Mary Beard, David Olusoga and Yotam Ottolenghi - nearing sellout status, focus switches to the panels, where visitors can converse on a vast number of subjects. From the future of technology, to climate justice and the social duty of sports professionals, a host of household names and industry experts will debate and discuss these fascinating, thought-provoking subjects, and more, at length in these expertly chaired panels. The first one - Is the Metaverse Our Future Reality? takes place on 22 September and will feature a panel of five specialists examining the next phase of the internet, what it looks like and what it could mean for us. On the 23rd, mental health is brought into focus with a panel including actor David Harewood MBE, TV personality and presenter Gail Porter and journalist and campaigner Bryony Gordon. Saturday 24 September sees a double-header: first up is “What’s Wrong with Climate Activisim?” followed by “What Can We Laugh About?”. The latter looks at the fine line between comedic expression and causing offence and

features a panel including comedians Rosie Jones and Jamali Maddix. Sunday 25 September also sees two panels. “Is Social Media Ruling the World?” looks at how expansion has seen us spiralling towards tailored algorithms, fake news and geopolitical influence. This panel features Christopher Wylie who is best known for his role in taking down the cyberwarfare firm Cambridge Analytica. The final panel - “Does Sport Have a Social Duty?” discusses the role of sport within society and asks whether sports personalities are best placed to highlight important social issues. Broadcaster Charlie Webster will be chairing this panel and will be joined by former professional footballer Gary Bennett MBE, Olympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, former rugby player Gareth Thomas and former Crystal Palace chairman, Simon Jordan. If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket, you can see Yotam Ottolenghi (22 September) explore how food brings people together and experience Aisling Bea’s (23 September) take on what it takes to be a 21st century BAFTA-winning screenwriter. Historian David Olusoga (24 September) will be examining the causes of the ‘history wars’ and asks where they might lead us whilst Mary Beard (25 September) will bring the festival to a close with a discussion on how we can best defend, and pay for, arts and culture from the ancient world to now. NORTHSIDE GUIDE 2022

A different persepective The newly-refurbished Clifford’s Tower in York is now offers unrivalled panoramic views of the city – and houses a few surprises too, writes Richard Abbey.

s far as views go, it’s pretty spectacular. In fact, I’d go as far as saying it’s probably the best view in the whole of York. And I don’t think I’ll be alone in these thoughts. Since reopening on 2 April, Clifford’s Tower now affords a stunning roof deck which offers unrivalled 360-degree views of the city. You can trace the walls around the city, see the Minster in the distance and get great views for the Rivers Ouse and Foss. And it’s all thanks to a £5million conservation project carried out by English Heritage with the aim of transforming the 800-year-old landmark. Judging by my reaction, and no doubt countless others

A

that will following my footsteps, it will be an unmitigated success. Where previously the tower was an empty shell, English Heritage, working alongside Hugh Broughton and Martin Ashley Architects, has now installed a a free-standing timber structure within it, protecting the ruin and creating the aforementioned roof deck. On the tower’s first floor, dramatic aerial walkways have opened up hidden rooms for the first time since Clifford’s Tower was gutted by fire in 1684. These include the royal chapel and a toilet built especially for Henry III. Hugh Broughton, director of Hugh Broughton Architects, said: “It has been

a special privilege to work with English Heritage on such a significant project for the City of York, and we are thrilled that the Tower can now enjoy the next chapter in its rich and varied life. “The entire project team has worked so collaboratively and so hard to deliver a project of excellence. The existing fabric has been carefully conserved and enhanced interpretation introduces visitors to the many stories associated with the tower and the wider castle precincts. The timber deck and suspended walkways improve access, introduce visitors to previously unseen historic fabric, allow more time for people to enjoy the spectacular views of York

and complement the special character of Clifford’s Tower.” The work took place between November 2020 and March 2022. Clifford’s Tower crowns the mighty earthwork mound raised by William the Conqueror in 1068. For centuries it was the keep and chief strongpoint of York Castle, the greatest royal fortress in medieval northern England. At first, there was a timber tower here, where the most notorious event in the history of the castle took place in 1190, when the Jews of York, who had taken refuge in the tower, died in tragic circumstances. The stone tower was built soon afterwards and was used as a treasury and royal exchequer. In the 17th century, a fire destroyed the interior of the tower and the building was reduced to a shell. Many of the rest of the castle buildings were swept away when a new prison and court were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. As part of the construction of the County Gaol, the mound at Clifford’s Tower was cut back to make way for a new road and a large retaining wall was built around it. In 1935, the lower slopes of the mound were reconstructed. Jeremy Ashbee, Head Properties Curator at English Heritage said: “One of England’s most important buildings, Clifford’s Tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, which was the centre of government for the North throughout the Middle Ages and up to the 17th-century - the place where the whole of the North of England was ruled from. We not only wanted to preserve this incredible building for generations to come, but also do justice to its fascinating and multifaceted history.” This new interpretation will help place the tower in the context of both the historic York Castle and the

city of York itself as well as introducing visitors to the tower’s long and turbulent history.Visitors can explore the castle’s founding by William the Conqueror, the tower’s role as the site of the tragic 1190 massacre and suicide of York’s Jewish community and the role of the castle as both a medieval royal stronghold and a garrison during the Civil War. Integral to the new scheme is its soundscape. Layers of background sound take visitors back in time, allowing them to experience the tower as it would have been at various periods in its long history. Visitors can engage with five key moments in that history with the help of the voices of local residents who bring the stories of fictional characters to life, each representing a different

chapter in the tower’s past. As part of the English Heritage project, the tower has also been conserved. Exposed to the elements for more than 300 years, its historically fire damaged stonework, and the walls, turret stairs, arrow slits and fireplaces have been extensively repaired. The chapel has been reroofed to enable the public to enter it again while the carved heraldic plaques above the entrance to Clifford’s Tower, showing the coats of arms of Charles I and Henry Clifford, have also been conserved. To improve access, additional handrails have been introduced to the

steps up the mound on which the historic tower sits and three resting points created. A map and a timeline at the base of the mound provide interpretation while also at street level, English Heritage staff will greet visitors at a new Piaggio, a three-wheeled vehicle, providing information, tickets and guidebooks. Clifford’s Tower is open daily from 10am-6pm with ticket prices starting from £8.10 for adults and £5.40 for children (5-17).Visit www.englishheritage.org.uk to find out Continued on page 44more.

Hit the ARKADE TAKE A WALK IN TO LEEDS’ MOST EXCLUSIVE AND CONTEMPORARY MEN’S SALON. RKADE is fast becoming a force within the men’s hairdressing scene. Launched in July 2020, the Leeds based salon has been recognised by key industry players and clients alike for its impeccable services and stunning aesthetics. Having heavily invested in its creative space and team of skilled stylists, ARKADE sets itself apart from traditional barbers. Offering a 360grooming experience by combining conventional and contemporary methods of cutting, the salon has amassed an impressive client base – including Premier League footballers, social media influencers and the hair industry’s very own professionals. Situated in the heart of the city, you can find the salon uniquely placed in the listed Queens Arcade building. Take a walk inside and you are met with a sublime contrast of minimalism and botany. The beautifully sculpted walls covered in a fine layer of Venetian plaster is a feature you will not see anywhere else in the city. The attentiveness of the design serves more than an aesthetic purpose, it offers clients an unrivalled environment to unwind and experience a level of service comparable to a Michelin Star restaurant. ARKADE itself possesses an industry equivalent Michelin Star, it is the only men’s salon in the city to be a member of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, an organisation promoting artistic and creative quality. The achievements also include a nomination as the only northern-based salon to be shortlisted as a finalist at the prestigious British

A

Hairdressing Business Awards taking place in July 2022. The salon has its stylists regularly feature at key industry events such as the Great British Barber Bash and through its retail affiliation with Toni & Guy’s men’s range, label.m, London Fashion Week also looms. The salon’s Owner, Harris Khan is grateful for the overwhelming support and custom it has received. “We have grown at a rapid pace after experiencing such turbulent times through the pandemic,” he said. “I am extremely thankful to all our loyal clients and partners for making this possible. The city of Leeds has been magnificent.

The industry itself has welcomed us too, to be recognised within our first two years as a contender at the British Hairdressing Business awards is an honour.” Your visit to ARKADE will be an experience to remember, each barber offers excellence as standard, the haircut and the customer service encompass this. The salon attracts an array of clients, from city professionals and students to the mature and those unsure - ARKADE even provides a complimentary consultation to put you at ease and discuss your expectations. The journey ahead promises to be an exciting yet successful one, with plans underway to develop a training and education academy for aspiring stylists and industry professionals and the prospect of adding to its flagship salon. One thing is for sure, you must visitbookings can be made via the Booksy app, telephone or by visiting ARKADE online. DEAR DOCTOR

DR JOHN TITTERINGTON MBChB, FRCA, FFPMRCA IS A CONSULTANT IN INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MANAGEMENT AT LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS TRUST AND SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL. QUESTION:

I have low back pain, what specialist should I see and what sort of treatment options are available? ANSWER:

For sufferers of back pain, a common, but sometimes inaccurate diagnosis is “non-specific low back pain”. Back pain is traditionally treated with exercises such as Pilates, yoga and tai chi. Exercise can be a great alternative to the limited and sometimes unpleasant range of pain killers. Unfortunately for some exercise and pain killers are not enough, frequently patients look to spinal surgeons to solve their pain. However as spinal surgery is generally not recommended for back pain it is often more productive to see a specialist consultant in pain management, for whom back pain is a very common complaint. These professionals are usually consultant anaesthetists who specialise

in the management of spinal pain and other chronic pain (pain lasting for more than three months). Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust has a team of Pain Management consultants based at Leeds General Infirmary. The pain management consultant will discuss your back pain, carefully examine and investigate (MRI scans) and may undertake X-ray guided injections to diagnose precisely the cause of the pain. Following this the most commonly diagnosed specific causes of low back pain can be: • Arthritis of the small joints (facet joints) in the spine • Sacroiliac joint wear and tear (the region above the pelvis and the base of the back) • Disc degeneration with spinal muscle dysfunction • Neuropathic back pain (burning pain and sensitivity) • Slipped discs (herniated discs) • Piriformis syndrome • Cluneal neuritis For some patients, the pain can be truly non-specific. In these cases, the consultant will be best placed to advise on medications and lifestyle changes. But if the specific cause can be carefully identified, it can be effectively treated.Treatments include steroid injections to help shrink back prolapsed discs, joint injections, ablating (burning) nerves which run to the arthritic joints, or even implants to help with pain. There have been huge leaps in recent medical development of what is termed “Implantable” technology such as spinal cord stimulators. These modify nerve activity to minimise the sensation of pain reaching the brain and for some will be the life-changing treatment they have been searching for.

Turn back time CLARE CAROLL TALKS ABOUT PLASMABLAST SKIN TIGHTENING, THE BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO PLASTIC SURGERY. PLASMABLAST IS A 100 PER CENT NATURAL, NON-INVASIVE AESTHETIC TREATMENT DESIGNED TO SHRINK THE SKIN. lasmablast skin tightening is a 100 per cent natural skin treatment which gives you a brighter, smoother, contoured and youthful appearance. The treatment shrinks sagging skin, reduces lines and dramatically reduces deep wrinkles or completely takes them away. Plasmablast works on natural healing and you will see results at six weeks plus – don’t forget it has taken years to grow your loose skin so it needs a bit of time to shrink it back. This treatment allows Clare to remove excess skin in a non-surgical, minimally invasive manner. Over the last four years, Clare has refined her approach to treating clients that want to look younger or fresher without the obvious frozen, stretched or plumped faces often seen now in day to day life. All clients who undergo Clare’s signature Plasmablast facelift report that they look and feel refreshed and more importantly they keep their true facial expressions. Clare’s approach focuses on the following key areas:

P

• Facelift • Crepey Skin • Overhanging eyelids • Bags under eyes • Crows feet • Cheek enhancement • Sagging Jawline • Smokers lips • Smoother neck • Skin texture improvement • Lines and wrinkle reduction The treatment works by using a specialised device which delivers a nitrogen based gas which changes in the air just above the skin causing an arc which zaps the skin. This process damages the epidermis many times causing the body’s natural defence technique to go into overdrive, fibroblasts in the dermis kick in and produce brand new collagen, thus encouraging fresh new skin cells and restoring the elastin giving a bouncier texture. To see many before and after pictures look on Facebook –Plasmablast Skin Tightening by Clare Carroll – or Instagram – plasmablastclare. Plasmablast is predominantly for the over 40s who have loose, wrinkly skin but can also minimise acne scarring in younger clients. Plasmablast treatments are priced from £250 up to £900. Clare will give free consultations via FaceTime video chats or at her brand new skin clinic in Selby. It will include skin analysis, assessing the texture of your face and what she can do for you. Call Clare on 07976 971501. Clare can also visit salons in Bingley, Leeds,York and Selby or at your home address, travel expenses will be added.

Get back on track with a new hip MR JOSEPH ADERINTO LOOKS AT THE AFFECTS OF ARTHRITIS AND HOW ONE OF THE MOST COMMON SURGICAL PROCEDURES CAN ALLEVIATE ANY DISCOMFORT. ip arthritis is a common condition that affects 1 in 10 people over the age of 45 in England. Pain is often felt in the groin and buttock but can radiate down the thigh towards the knee. Sometimes pain due to hip arthritis is felt in the knee alone. There are other conditions that can mimic hip arthritis pain, such as lower back pain that can radiate to the hip region. When hip arthritis is suspected, an x-ray of the hip is performed to confirm the diagnosis and determine its severity. As arthritis progresses, the hip becomes stiff, leading to the common complaint of difficulty putting on shoes and socks. Some people will also notice shortening of the leg on the affected side. Hip arthritis causes pain which impairs quality of life, making it difficult to enjoy recreational activities such as walking, golf and tennis. In the early stages, mild pain

symptoms can usually be managed with painkillers, but once arthritis becomes more severe and limits activity, hip replacement provides a great option to relieve pain, restore function and improve quality of life. Hip replacement is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the UK, with over 95,000 performed each year. Surgery has a high success rate and low risk of complications, such that over

90 per cent of hip replacements will last 15 years or more. Hip replacements are made of materials including metal, plastic and ceramic. They can be fixed in place using cement, or uncemented implants can be used where bone grows onto the surface of the implant to hold it in place. Surgery is usually performed under a spinal anaesthetic where you will have no sensation below the waist, but a general anaesthetic where you are asleep is also an option. Once the hip had been replaced the arthritis pain goes away immediately and walking is encouraged soon after surgery, often on the same day of the operation. Hospital stay is typically two to three days, but can vary depending on the needs of the individual. Painkillers are provided for the first few weeks after surgery and bloodthinning medication in tablet form is also given for a duration of five weeks to reduce the risk of deep venous thrombosis (blood clots). After surgery, physiotherapy will help improve walking. Driving a car can usually be undertaken at six weeks after surgery. Full recovery takes approximately 12 weeks, although by six weeks, most people can walk comfortably with no walking aids. Hip replacement is an effective, low risk procedure that can transform lifestyles in those suffering with arthritis. If you are suffering with hip arthritis, why not consider a hip replacement? A tropical, Yorkshire oasis BY RUSS WATKINS, FLORAL TEAM LEADER AT RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR.

’ve been passionate about gardening all my life, but really got stuck into it when I was 16 and have since spent 17 years working at RHS Garden Harlow Carr as part of the Horticultural Team. When it comes to planting, my absolute joy is in showing people something exciting and surprising. With the Sub Tropicana garden at Harlow Carr, I wanted to create a space where people could see plants not often seen in Yorkshire and show them something unexpected. It has been somewhat of a personal experiment, using a lot of the plants from my own personal collection and from plant swaps as we really tried to push the boundaries of what we could grow in this climate. We have been pleasantly surprised in that about 70 per cent of the plants we didn’t think would survive, have indeed come back. I love the striking, bold colours of tropical plants and really wanted to create a jungle feel and shock people with plants that look like they really shouldn’t be growing in the middle of Yorkshire. We have some wonderful big open vistas at Harlow Carr, but I wanted to create a really unique, intimate space, where visitors would almost have to push their way through huge wet leaves, as if they actually in a tropical jungle. Some of the plants such as Trachycarpus and bamboos are actually very hardy and help to create the tropical look even in the depths of winter. But some of the plants are a little more delicate such as Colius with its insane lime green tipped leaves and the vibrant pink Iresine and so we take these out over the colder months to protect them. The garden really looks it best from August onwards as the beautiful dahlias really start to pop. But I personally really love the huge big bonkers leaves of the bananas, they just look so out of place here! You could actually create something similar quite easily at home by simply mixing large foliage with different shapes and colours. Or you could even create your own mini tropical garden in a pot with a mix of cannas, dahlias, spider plants and trailing Tradescantia, then pop it in a sheltered corner that feels quite warm. I hope I have inspired you to have a go at creating your own tropical paradise!
