My knee hurts – should I worry? MR SANJEEV ANAND, CONSULTANT KNEE SURGEON, ANSWERS SOME OF THE COMMON QUESTIONS ASKED IN HIS KNEE CLINIC. nees can be painful after an injury. If following an injury, you are unable to put weight on the injured leg or the knee is swollen, you should seek advice. You don’t often have to have suffered an injury to endure knee pain. Knees can often be painful due to repetitive stress from activities like running, jumping or other loading activities. This would often settle with rest but if symptoms persist seek specialist advice.

If you eat a balanced and varied diet, addition of further dietary supplements does not give any extra benefit for your joint health. Paradoxically people with healthier diets and lifestyles are more likely to take dietary supplements because they are more health conscious.

K

What about clicking in my knee joint?

It is quite common and normal for joints to click. It is usually due to air bubbles forming and breaking within the joint fluid and usually happens when you move a joint after a period of rest. This would not cause any pain and is usually nothing to worry about. People with hypermobile joints click more as they can stretch their joint more. Other reasons for clicking joint is because of tendons or ligaments snapping over bony prominences. Think of an elastic band moving over a bump!

I have a damaged knee joint, would wearing a brace help?

A painful click especially with a feeling of abnormal movement in the joint should always be checked over by an expert. Would exercise damage my knee joint?

Joints get their nutrition from movement and generally, movement is good for joints. Unless you have an injury, the benefits of exercise in improving your general health and mental wellbeing far outweigh any risks from exercises. This advice, however, may change if you have had an injury. Would food supplements help my knee pain?

Braces can be useful under certain circumstances and your specialist may be able to prescribe the right one for you. Soft braces work by putting pressure around the joint and can give a sense of wellbeing; patients often find them helpful but they don’t protect joint from abnormal movements. Rigid braces often come with hinges which allow the knee to bend. They can help in arthritis by moving load from a diseased part of the joint to a relatively normal part of the knee joint. By using them, you may be able to delay or avoid a surgery. Some people find a rigid brace useful to support their joint after a ligament injury. My child’s knee hurts. Is it growing pain?

Mark Edward Emerton Colin Holton Hip and knee Specialist in young hip replacement surgery, conditions including hip primary and revisions arthroscopy, pelvic osteotomies and hip replacements

While growing pains are very common in children, not all pain in legs is due to growing pain. Growing pain is usually felt in both legs, often in muscles on the front of the thigh or in calves behind the legs. They don’t cause any pain in the joints or swelling or redness. There is no test to confirm growing pain, but an expert can rule out other common causes of pain by assessment or scans. Note:The author is a specialist knee surgeon, and the above reflects his opinion on common questions asked by his patients in knee clinics. It is a general advice and may not be applicable to every individual or their knee condition. If you have any concerns about your knee joint, please seek a specialist advice.

Finding fulfillment through food WORKING ALONGSIDE LEEDS CHARITY ZEST, LEEDS COOKERY SCHOOL IS A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE OFFERING A RANGE OF EXCLUSIVE CHEF-LED COOKERY CLASSES, COURSES AND EVENTS. WE SPOKE TO JOY SHIBUKAWA-JAMES TO FIND OUT MORE. eeds Cookery School likes to do things differently. Set up in 2018, it is a multi-awardwinning social enterprise offering a range of exclusive chef-led cookery classes, courses and events. So far, so delicious. But any profits generated are gifted back to charity Zest to support their work reducing inequality in the Leeds area. Established in 2002, Zest is an independent, not-for-profit organisation and registered charity addressing health inequalities and social isolation through activities which improve physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing. In an effort to support people living in disadvantaged areas of Leeds, they aim to improve life chances by promoting healthier lifestyles and enabling fulfilling lives. While their roots are in East Leeds, Zest now work across the city. Leeds Cookery School is based at The

L

Old Fire Station in East Leeds and offers classes in a high spec kitchen within a former fire engine bay. It’s the perfect setting to update your culinary skills, safe in the knowledge that every penny of profit is supporting a local charity and vulnerable people in Leeds. It’s a stunning space and you’ll see many original features still intact, from fire buckets re-purposed as light fittings to the original 80-year-old Leeds flooring and wall tiles.

As well as donating profits to Zest, Leeds Cookery School has committed to running affordable cooking activity throughout the year, in partnership with Jamie’s Ministry of Food Leeds and Zest’s Community Development Team. These sessions enable low income families and vulnerable people to access basic cookery skills and cookery clubs which address social isolation. Sustainability plays a bit part in the ethos of Leeds Cookery School; all ingredients are sourced from Yorkshire and are sustainable wherever possible and they order in small quantities to minimise wastage and always consider the food miles travelled by the ingredients. They also endeavour to minimise plastic usage and source recycled sundry products where available. We spoke to Joy Shibukawa-James to find out more.

How did the cookery school start?

Leeds Cookery School opened its doors in 2018 and we haven’t looked back since. The pandemic was a rather turbulent time, which it was for everyone, but we have high hopes for this year. How did the pandemic change Leeds Cookery School?

The pandemic hit the cookery school quite hard, we had to close our doors for several months, like others in the hospitality industry. We are incredibly grateful to see the other side of the pandemic as not all businesses survived. We are really hoping that 2022 is a good year for us so we can give back to Zest so they can carry on their good work in the

communities in Leeds. This pandemic has impacted us all from businesses to communities and now more than ever community projects like what Zest run are really important for people. Do you think more people have wanted to take up home cooking since the start of the pandemic?

Yes, definitely. And it’s not really surprising as things like cooking and arts and crafts interests went through the roof because we were all stuck at home trying to keep ourselves occupied. Plus, cooking is not only a great activity but you get the joy of eating at the end of it. Do you think the pandemic has changed how people value cooking skills?

When the restaurants were shut and I was relying on my cooking to feed my family it made me realise how important it was to have some basic skills and a bit of nutritional knowledge in order to create good food for my family. It also made we want to up my cooking game as well because I wanted make special meals for birthdays. I’m sure other people can relate to that as well. Food is not only used to 14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

fuel us but we use it to celebrate, commiserate and share, it’s such an important part of life. How do you encourage those who might not enjoy home cooking?

Some people find cooking stressful or a chore, or both! Our advice is to start with very simple recipes and get everything prepped before you commence the cooking. That means getting all the ingredients our, getting them weighed out, getting them chopped and ready to go. Organisation and preparation is key to a calm kitchen. What is your favourite class that you offer at the school?

That is a very hard question and the answer would probably change from day to day depending on what type of cuisine my tastebuds are craving. I’m going to be a cop out and say the sixweek cookery course because that covers so many cuisines (Chinese, Indian, Italian to name a few) and techniques! Do people need any cooking experience before attending a specialist class? No, not at all, all abilities are welcome! How do you promote and encourage the use of local and fresh ingredients at the school?

In all our classes our chefs will talk about the ingredients being used and also where to get them locally. As a school we make a point of using local suppliers and we use the freshest ingredients as well. What steps do you take to minimise

plastic usage at the cookery school?

When we buy veg we ensure that we get them loose so we avoid using single use plastic bags. With other packaging we try and recycle everything we can. We minimise food waste by only using what we need and carefully storing ingredients. If there are leftovers from a cookery class they soon get eaten by the LCS and Zest teams! Have you felt that more people are wanting to take plant-based classes in more recent years?

The interest in plant-based has definitely grown along with interest in vegetarian and flexitarian diets as well. We offer a wide range of plant-based and veggie classes so people can learn new skills and recipes and so extend their cooking repertoire. How do you accommodate those with dietary needs, such as gluten or lactose intolerances?

We always try and cater to all dietary needs. We encourage people to get in contact with us before booking so we

can ensure we can adapt the class to meet their needs. What events or seasonal classes do you have coming up in the year?

Well, where do I start! We will be working with some guest chefs this year – Freda Shafi, Loc from Loc’s Taste of Vietnam, Afsaneh Kaviani and Steph Moon. They will be doing cookery masterclasses at Leeds Cookery School. We will be increasing the amount of parent and child classes and we may start doing parent and teen classes as well. In September we are running a five-day school leavers cookery crash course so they can learn some essential cookery skills before they fly the parental nest and start a new chapter in their lives. We are always developing new classes so keep a look out on our website and if you haven’t already sign up to our monthly newsletter as we’ll make announcement via that as well.

If people want to support Zest in other ways they can always fund-raise. This would certainly be very welcome!

Apart from the courses, how else can people support Leeds Cookery School and Zest?

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?

JORDAN ODU IS STARTING TO GET THAT SPRING/SUMMER FEELING.

ith the lighter nights gradually creeping in and the last of the storms disappearing (here’s hoping), I’m already looking forward to an action-packed spring and summer. And, given all the incredible bar and restaurant openings Leeds has witnessed in the past few weeks, this city won’t be short when it comes to big nights out. Speaking of big nights, the recent launch of Roxy Lanes at The Light was certainly one to remember. The guest list was packed, the beers and cocktails were flowing and the new games were a massive hit. As well as partaking in the bowling the bar is famed for, I also took inspiration from the success of Team GB at the Winter Olympics and gave curling a shot. I loved their ice-free version of the classic game and will be returning to perfect my curling skills. The new venue also screens the very best major sporting events and offers American pool and shuffleboard.

fresh falafel, donner wraps, wings and shawarmas are a match made in heaven for SALT’s award-winning craft beers and the fastest draught cocktail pour in town. Do believe the hype and go check them out. Just when you thought you’d seen it all when it comes to the beloved bottomless brunch, along comes OBA with a mouth-watering menu that will have you rounding up your crew for a weekend session. Think Korean Fried Chicken, Kimchi Spring Rolls, and moreish Cucumber Maki Sushi Rolls washed down with bottomless Prosecco and you’re on the right track. For those nights when you want the creme de la creme of the city’s best indie restaurants in the comfort of your own home, then the new Pronto delivery app has got you covered. Created in Ilkley and recently launched for Leeds, the app features some of our finest foodie hot spots. Slap and Pickles finest calorific comfort food in the first week and the service, was just as impressive as the food. After an almost three-year hiatus from live gigs, I finally returned to Leeds Arena to see Brit award winner Dave have the crowd eating out the palm of his hand. Given it had been so long since such an event, we went VIP with a box and what an experience and fantastic value for money. Here’s to many more concerts in 2022. March is shaping up to be quite the month, with Rob Burrow Strictly Ball for MND taking place on 19 March at Headingley Stadium, the sold-out event promises to be a true spectacle. I can’t wait to see the likes of Emmerdale’s Natalie Anderson and former Leeds striker Brian Deane take to the dancefloor, all in the name of such a good cause. If the thought of a post-lockdown summer isn’t enough to put a smile on your face, then perhaps the news that

one of the UK’s most prolific cosmetic dental experts opening a plush new practice in Leeds will. The Dental Architect will open this month in a stunning Grade-II-listed building on Wellington Street and is fronted by Dr Martina Hodgson. Nicknamed ‘The Invisalign Queen’ by clients and industry experts, Martina has come a long way since graduating from Leeds University back in 2001 and was named in the Dentistry Top 50 just last year. What an achievement and I can’t wait for my pearly whites to get an upgrade. Finally, I’d like to give a big shout-out to all the ladies out there for International Women’s Day, especially my PG/HL girls who massively support me with everything – every day is a good day with you! See you next month. Jords

Wear it again IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE IDEA OF YOUR WEDDING DRESS BEING STUCK IN A BOX, UPCYCLING CAN GIVE IT A WHOLE NEW LEASE OF LIFE. MARIA ILIFFE LOOKS AT SENTIMENTAL IDEAS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER. edding dresses remain one of the only garments made with the intention of being worn only once, yet they are always expensive. Showing off your beautiful and pricey gown for just one day and leaving it in box forever more seems like a massive waste, particularly when sustainability and cutting down on waste had become ever more important. It explains why many brides are now looking to ‘upcycle’ their dresses, turning them into something new or into different items for memorable keepsakes. This allows the dress to live on, breathing new life into it and spreading the memory. Not only does this give wedding dresses a new purpose but does so sustainably. Single use fashion items, such as wedding dresses, are some of the biggest contributors to the negative environmental impact caused by the

W

fashion industry. With people increasingly realising the need for sustainable fashion and environmentally friendly solutions to the problems we’ve caused, upcycling is in! Turning old garments into something new is becoming more popular. Even celebrities are taking notice: Emma Watson was pictured on the green carpet in an

upcycled piece created by designer Harris Reed out of donated wedding dresses from Oxfam. Of course, donating or selling your dress are great options too, but if you’d like to keep the memory and spread the sentiment into different items, we’ve collected ten of the best ways to do so. There are many different reasons why someone might want to upcycle their wedding dress, and there are even more options for how they can do so. Including presents, blankets, keepsakes, accessories and a whole dress transformation, we’ve gathered the easiest and most sentimental ideas for you to consider.

Add a touch of lace

Work of art

To embellish your household décor or add some decoration to items you may have already made, your wedding dress lace is perfect. Cutting around the lace or using lace edges / tuile gives you gorgeous additions to any piece. Alternatively, if you have experience in sewing, the lace can be sewn together or added to a piece of fabric and made into a new item entirely. Headbands and necklaces are very easy to make out of lace, simply fixing lace to a band for a statement head piece or adding a fastening to a section of lace to make a choker. This will match perfectly with the stunning cocktail or evening dress you may have already turned your wedding dress into.

One easy way to create truly beautiful art out of your dress, is by framing a piece of fabric/dress section. Resulting in a very sentimental piece, you can even stitch (or pay for a professional to stitch) your initials and date on the framed dress section. On a grander and more expensive scale, you could frame your whole gown. Turning your entire dress into a bigger art installation would create a statement piece in any house. There are a select few companies specialising in framing your dress, The Beautiful Frame Company for example, where it can be preserved professionally and very impressively, however you could buy a frame and glass, doing so yourself for much cheaper.

Confetti Fabric repurposed With any spare pieces of your dress that are too small to create a new idea, you can turn them into a new length of fabric. Placing all the sections next to one another, with the edges overlapping, you can sew over them to create a patchwork fabric, with all the old sentiment but a new purpose. There are tutorials online to help explain how this works and give examples for inspiration. The beauty of this is how unique the fabric will be; you can arrange the scraps and sew them however you desire and of course they’re taken from your dress, making it completely personal. After, you can make anything from this fabric, perhaps something listed here or for another project you have on the go. Using all the dress, including the waste, means the process is closed loop and completely sustainable/environmentally friendly.

Dreamy duvet Same but different One of the best ways to use the whole dress and create a re-useable piece, would be to turn your dress into another. Seen by many brides over the years, making simple alterations can easily transform the piece into a cocktail dress or evening gown. Dying is the most effective way, getting the correct dyes (preferably sustainable) and adding your dress to the mixture always results in a completely unique and almost unrecognisable piece. However, many wedding dresses are so glamorous that even with dye, they still appear bridal; with these it’s best to shorten the dress (using the spare fabric for one of our other ideas). Additionally, cutting off the sleeves or removing some decoration helps to simplify the dress. Adding a belt and some accessories also allows for a more evening/cocktail look. Keeping the structure and sentiment, you have a whole new piece allowing you to get more wear out of your special dress.

Small and beautiful Depending on your sewing skills, you may want to leave this idea for a business/sewer; but regardless of how you get there, turning your dress into a mini dress/christening gown, is beautiful idea for your children or grandchildren. Many brides have followed this path, creating a smaller version or new design out of their wedding dress material, it makes a very sentimental gift and helps you upcycle your gown. If you feel this would be better made through experts, Little Doves online creates some beautiful pieces, or alternatively Infinity Keepsakes have made gorgeous christening dresses alongside other wedding keepsakes. 28 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Turning your wedding dress into a quilt maybe a bigger job than the rest, but will result in such a stunning and personal bed cover. For a simpler idea, you can create a smaller piece for a child in the family, maybe making a beautiful cot sheet. This is easy as you only need to cut a section, hemming for neatness if you desire. However, to make your own bed cover you might need some extra fabric to attach depending on how much space your dress will cover when cut into sections. If you would rather a professional’s touch, many sellers online offer custom, handmade covers/blankets, LoveMoody or Jemdesign567 on Etsy for example.

Wear it well

Picture this

Creating a pendant requires such a minuscule cutting from your dress that you could still preserve the whole piece and never know you’d taken a section. However, as small as it is, this makes a truly beautiful piece of jewellery out of your dress. Cutting a section of fabric or lace and adding it to a pendant is all it takes. Purchase or use an existing empty pendant with a glass front and chain and use clear adhesive (preferably for fabric), to keep it in place. The same method applies for earrings and cufflinks if you wish to make them to match, preserving your dress forever in gorgeous jewellery. Sellers on Etsy can make these for you if you would prefer; CeciLeibovitz and TreeTownPaper create some stunning pieces.

Covering a photo album is one of the simplest ideas, requiring only glue, scissors and an album. Wedding photos allow the magical memories to live on, capturing you and all your family members at their happiest, the images taken will be cherished forever. So, why not use some spare fabric from your dress to either cover a new album, potentially as a gift, or add sentiment to your current album. As you chose your dress and fabric, of course the piece was beautiful, when adding a section to a book, it in turn will look beautiful, with minimal effort.

Cuddly toys As a wedding dress already holds such sentiment, using sections to make a memory bear or bunny for loved one, makes a very thoughtful gift and allows your dress to live on. If you’re planning on doing this yourself, you can use a small piece of fabric and some lace/elastic to make a mini dress for a teddy. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can make the teddy out of the dress fabric, giving it a soft or lacy body full of memories. Alternatively, if you would like a more professional gift, maybe for your child or grandchild, some online companies can create beautiful and personal teddies out of your dress, or make a small version of your dress to add to a teddy. HandmadeByHenri or ThreadPaperStudio both sell these beautiful custom pieces on Etsy, providing a completely unique and personalised gift.

Bags of style One simple way to get as much use out of your dress is by using the fabric to make other items. Creating a purse, curtains, pillows, tote bags, presents or other household items can be a very simple and completely sustainable way to give new life to your beautiful dress. Purses and tote bags can be made easily, following online patterns and could make a sentimental matching gifts for your maid of honour or bridesmaids. Pillows and cushions are also just as simple to make, cutting shapes cut of the fabric with the edges stitched, sometimes even glued. As your dress fabric is already gorgeous, using it to make these pieces means they’ll easily look good and bring gorgeous sentiment. The option to embellish is there and patterns/tutorials can be found online for more guidance, alongside examples for inspiration.

It’s all about individuality very year we see new bridal trends exploding into weddings across the country, whether it be dress styles, table décor or colour palettes. With inspiration from the fashion industry, themes seen on the runway filter into weddings and bring trends for brides to adopt and re-work. With major emphasis in 2022 on individuality, weddings are predicted to become more unique and personal, in both style and design. Bridesmaid dresses were one of the first wedding elements to show individual style and creativity. In colour, style and fabric, 2022’s trends will leave you looking like the best version of yourself, instead of being one in a group dressed identically and traditionally.

E

Mix not Match Bringing your bridesmaid’s sense of identity into their dresses could be the key to a beautifully personal wedding. Seen for years but trending now for 2022/2023 weddings, mix and match dresses are in. Giving your bridesmaids freedom to find their own dress, allows them to feel their most comfortable and confident to support you on your special day. However, the trick to styling the different dresses is cohesion. Following a colour palette is strongly advised to ensure your bridesmaids match and using one colour or shades of one colour would work even better. Alternatively, the dresses would remain a beautiful variation if they were similar styles but with different necklines or length. However much freedom you choose to give your bridesmaids, remember that having one thing in common (colour, neckline, style or length) will tie the dresses beautifully and bring order to your potential mix and match madness.

Bold is Better 2022 epitomises colour, vibrancy and life! After years of Covid negativity and neutral trends resembling our boredom, loud is back.

Pantone was one of the first to announce their colour of the year:Very Peri. The beautiful purple tone is welcomed to this year’s colour palette, alongside moody blues and seasonal greens. Already being styled in or purple... homes and wardrobes, these bold colours are soon to be Or something individual brought to bridal. The perfect colour options for bridesmaid dresses – shades of green – will look gorgeous for mix and match dresses, and if they’re sustainable, even better as the green will resemble this and tie in beautifully. Shades of blue and purple will match well together or can be brought in separately as block colour dresses that contrast the typical white/cream bridal wedding dresses. Regardless of which bold colours you chose to incorporate, if any, the option of joining this vibrant trend is there for inspiration.

Perfect Prints Unsurprisingly, matching this year’s wave of creativity, prints have made a bridal comeback. With the fashion trend of individuality inspiring new prints and styles for a less basic and played out look, weddings are seeing the same pattern. Prints are being used to give a new and unique look for the bridal party, contrasting gorgeously with simple wedding dresses. They can be mixed and matched as suggested above with a colour palette to avoid clashing, or

Go green...

bridesmaid dresses can use the same print with different styles for inclusivity (with different fits catering to different body shapes).

Stop the Stereotypical With the fashion industry finally moving further and further away from stereotypical styles, fits and gendered clothing, women have more freedom in the styles they can wear. Of course, we have always had the option of wearing any clothes (regardless of the gender they were designed for) but it’s hard to feel confident in outfits stereotyped for someone else. Now the world is becoming more progressive, society is helping women feel free in their choice of fit / style, allowing us to move away from the typical tight dress. The perfect example of this is seen in bridesmaids outfits; with the rise in searches for bridal jumpsuits and suits, it’s seeming finally more acceptable to feel comfortable in something other than a dress. Hey sugar face Do you know what sugar does to your skin and you wellbeing? It’s not sweet.. Reducing your added sugar intake is a great decision to make for a healthier lifestyle and ultimately better skin. It isn’t always easy to follow through but the benefits are worth it, as added sugar has been proven to have negative effects on your body, your skin and your energy. Sugar breaks down collagen, the substance that makes your skin look plump, youthful, and lifted. Sugar can weaken the immune system, and a suppressed immune system is bad at fighting off bacteria – bacteria clogged in pores creates pimples! Did you know about that? Sugar triggers insulin production, which triggers protein-utilisation malfunctions. Sugar acts as a kind of signal scrambler, affecting the production of the proteins and amino acids that build up collagen and elasticity. This is my pledge to break up with sugar this month, join me in sugar detox. 54 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Lip Service: Fillers, Fact and Fiction DR BEJMA ADDRESSES THE MYTHS SURROUNDING THIS POPULAR ‘TWEAKMENT’. ip fillers are one of the aesthetics industry’s most infamous and most sought after non-surgical cosmetic treatments. They are often associated with celebrity transformations and overnight glow ups. The rise of the ‘tweakment’ culture has seen an increase in the myths and the spread of non-factual information, not to mention the emergence of unqualified practitioners. This alone is enough to deter any potential clients. However, it’s quite easy to dispel fake news with the help of established industry experts. These experts include Dr Bejma Medical Clinic in Leeds. The practice has become a pioneering force in the north, not only in providing a wide range of non-surgical treatments but offering correction procedures to help the effects of ill treatment and negligence. Dr Bejma, Aesthetic Awards finalist and founder of the clinic, has over ten years experience in creating natural looking enhancements without looking ‘overdone’. She believes an artistic and balanced approach is required – whether

L

the goal is to release your inner youth or amplify your features. “Cosmetic treatment isn’t about reversing the ageing process; it’s about releasing the real beauty that’s already in you,” she said. When considering lip filler there are number of steps you can take to ensure you have the best pre-treatment knowledge and advice prior to making your decision. So it is important to consider factors such as your expectations – are they realistic and achievable? Here are the most common questions asked and answered by the professionals at Dr Bejma Medical Clinic. What are lip fillers?

Lip fillers are an injectable gel made with hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced within the body. They can replace lost volume, smooth out wrinkles and create improved lips definition and shape. Are they permanent?

No, typically speaking fillers can last up to 12 months, each individual responds

differently to treatment and it can also vary on the look desired by the patient. Does it hurt?

This entirely depends on your pain threshold, most patients would say the feeling is more of discomfort over pain. However numbing cream is applied to ease any uncomfortable sensations. Will I see results straight away?

Immediately after the treatment your lips can look swollen, this is a normal part of the process. The swelling tends to settle over a few hours and after your lips will start to look and feel natural. In essence, lip fillers can enhance your life in more ways than one. For many it isn’t just an aesthetically pleasing outcome they desire, heightened levels of self confidence and self esteem are added benefits. Fostering curiosity QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S INNNOVATIVE CURRICULUM AIDS THE TRANSITION BETWEEN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION. Year 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills that are important for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond, says Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), Steven Turner. At QE, their mission is for all members of their community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’. Steven Turner, Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique four-

school model, says: “We harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum. This is a curriculum which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House, our Preparatory school, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.” In a difference from the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year 6, QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6, and stay with them until Year 9. They find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so they

Steven Turner

made it a focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers. Importantly, they have made a crucial decision not to assess their Year 6 students using SATS testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated “common evaluation tasks” - these are used to track progress and identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows them to focus on delivering those skills that the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond. Their all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, which is at the heart of everything they do, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment throughout King’s Magna. They are committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to QE College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence. To find out more about this innovative curriculum visit qe.org for more information, where you can book on their next Open Day on 14 May 2022.

EATING OUT

Food is made for sharing NEW YORK DINER, 63RD + 1ST, IS A SUBTLE AND STYLISH ADDITION TO HARROGATE’S DINING SCENE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ood is made for sharing. At least that’s the ethos behind new Harrogate restaurant and cocktail bar, 63rd + 1st. Located on Albert Street in the centre of town, this classy venue has a distinct New York vibe that sits so well, not just with the area but its clientele too. Although inspired by the original TGI Fridays, which opened in 1965, it’s a far cry from the stereotypical American diner - they are no neon lights, no sports being shown on big screen TVs and no Budweiser on tap. New York style here is done subtly and stylishly and it really works. This is the third restaurant in the ‘chain’, if that’s the right word there are also locations in Glasgow and Cobham, Surrey - but this is the first in the north. Enter and you’ll find a charming bar area on your left where you can perch on a stool or take one of the many tables; to the right is a larger dining area with a mixture of booth seating and tables. Bold blue furniture colours are complemented by more muted tones for the walls which are adorned with American-style artworks - think Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol and the Statue of Liberty. Plentiful plants and foliage bring a touch of the outdoors inside creating a harmonious and comfortable space. We arrived for early dinner on a Saturday taking a booth seat in the heart of the restaurant. Although we were given paper menus, all food and drinks can be ordered (and paid for) via touchscreen tablets which are left on each table. Drinks seemed like a good place to start and like any cocktail bar worth its salt, the selection of drinks was

F

impressive. Cocktails ranged from the ‘Bitter + Sweet’ to ‘Classic + Dry’ as well as ‘Boozy + Honest’ and ‘No + Low’ – it was hard to know where to start. My wife opted for a Clover Club (£10), which had been mixed with Hendricks gin, Noilly Prat, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, lemon juice, sugar

cane and raspberries, and was presented beautifully. Almost purple in colour, it tasted as good as it looked. Draught beer comes in the form of 63rd + 1st premium lager (£5.50), which was cold, crisp and just delicious. I like the tankard-style glass too. As mentioned at the beginning of this

EATING OUT

feature the food at 63rd + 1st is based around the idea of sharing, so lots of small plates, nibbles as well as steaks from the Robata grill, burgers and salads. Our waitress recommended three to four dishes per person (depending on how hungry we were). We’d brought our two children along on this occasion so attempted to select some dishes that would please us all often easier said than done but I’m happy to say that my nine and 11-yearold like almost everything we ordered. We started with some warm sourdough bread with caramelised onion butter (£4.50) and some giant Nocellero olives (£4), both of which were excellent. This was followed by jammy chicken lollipops with a chilli dip (£7) and king prawns ‘pil pil’ (£8). With Asian flavours running though them the

lollipops were deliciously meaty and given extra zing from the dip whilst the prawns brought fresh flavours to the table. One of 63rd + 1st’s specialties is their savoury donuts - there are two to try, a BBQ pulled pork version with apple sauce (£7) and Devilled crab with crab mayo (£8). We tried the former but, for me, the jury’s still out. The combination of sweet donut with savoury pork and red cabbage was different to say the least! Elsewhere we tried a signature burger (£15), which was tender and juicy and piled high with a combination of steak patty, lettuce, mayo, tomato, Swiss cheese, crispy onions and burger mayo and came with house fries. A mozzarella corn dog (£8), although uncommon here, was a real taste of Americana; served on a stick it consisted of a beechwood smoked bratwurst with mozzarella in beer batter with mustard and ketchup, all familiar flavours that evoked trips to the ball park or carnival. Using the table you can select how you would like your steak cooking and our 6oz sirloin (£12) was cooked medium-rare as requested. We paired this with a portion of house fries (£3) and then order a further portion of loaded fries (£4), which were topped with garlic mayo and bacon bits. We decided to share desserts too, although my wife and I didn’t get much

of a look-in. The knickerbocker glory (£8) was over-the-top as it should be and a sweet sensation of fruit, cream, ice cream and strawberry sauce, whilst the chocolate donut was sticky and indulgent. A macchiato (£2.50) - for me - finished things of nicely. We liked the idea of sharing the different dishes and, from a parental point of view, it was a great way to get our kids to try something new. They loved it, as did we. 63rd + 1st Unit 7, Westgate House, Albert Street, Harrogate, HG1 1JX Tel: 0330 460 5599 www.63rdand1st.co.uk

Chinese treat WITH THREE MENUS TO CHOOSE FROM, RICHARD ABBEY IS SPOILT FOR CHOICE AT LEEDS’ ORIENTAL CITY. t’s perhaps not the most obvious location for a restaurant but, on the evidence of our recent, certainly not to Oriental City’s detriment. The Chinese restaurant is located just off the A61 on Cross Stamford Street, one of the main routes in and out of the city, and forms part of the Sing-Ying complex which also incudes the largest Chinese supermarket in Leeds - Sing Kee Foods, as well as a bakery. All the businesses are part of the Sing-Ying Group, which imports fresh and frozen foods and other oriental commodities from all over the Far East. It’s a family-run business that started in 1987 and they expanded to the current 14,000 sq ft premises in 2007 - the restaurant opened at the same time. Although the roadside

view of the building looks quite industrial, head round the back to the car park and it’s a whole different proposition. At its entrance is a paifang, also known as a pailou, a traditional style of Chinese architectural arch or gateway structure which makes for a striking welcome. Through the arch, the neon-lit Oriental City occupies the upstairs of the

Sing-Ying building and is a sizeable space with an ample bar and waiting area, large dining room and separate alcove. Decor is traditional Chinese with lots of red and gold, dark wooden dividers and dragons. We felt completely at home. Ninety per cent of Oriental City’s customers tends to be Chinese so you’ll find both an English and Chinese menu

as well as a special dim sum one, which is their speciality. Like any visit to a Chinese restaurant, with a vast amount of dishes it’s hard to know where to start. We all have our favourites but it’s always worth trying something new. We were torn between the two options. My children are definitely the less adventurous type (aren’t they all?) and had already settled on a quarter duck, served with pancakes, cucumber and spring onion (£11) to start, followed by sweet and sour chicken (£9.50), egg fried rice (£3.60) and chips (£2.80). So far, so predictable but we couldn’t fault a thing. The duck, shredded at the table – a great bit of theatre that my children enjoyed – was crispy and flavourful and worked so well with the tried and tested accompaniments. For the sweet and sour, battered chicken pieces served with chunks of pineapple and pepper was the perfect match for a sweet and sticky sauce. Taking a tentative step into the unknown, although not too tentative, my wife and I picked two dishes from the dim sum menu to start - steamed pork and prawn dumplings (£4.30) and deep fried squid strips (£4.30). The four sizeable dumplings arrived in a bamboo steamer and were deliciously plump, packed with meaty pork and prawn and paired well a chilli dip. The squid, sort of like the Chinese version of calamari, managed to be both crisp and tender and proved to be incredibly moreish. For main course we shared chilli beef in a kung po sauce (£9.50) and an

Oriental City special chow mein (£12). The chilli beef stayed on the right side of spicy, for me anyway, not too hot and with just the right amount of kick. Cashew nuts added a pleasing crunch whilst the sliced chillies added instant heat. The chow mein - we chose the soft noodle option was filled with pork, prawns, chicken, Chinese cabbage, mushrooms… a real feast. Drinks-wise we tried the Sun Lik beer (£5.60 pint) and finished with traditional Chinese tea (£1.70 per person).

The restaurant continued to fill up as we contemplated our meal, a clear testament to its reputation. Whatever your sense of adventure, we were all in agreement that this was Chinese food of the highest order. Just five minutes from the city centre, it’s definitely worth seeking out.
