Kevin Gillespie, chief marketing officer, said:“The truth is, we don’t want to be buying things that have significant sentimental value behind them. You can’t put a price on sentimentality. But you can put a price on reclaiming your space and creating new memories from the old things you no longer need or want.”

Sustainably fuelling the circular economy “For us, condition isn’t an issue. It really surprises people when we tell them that we will buy their items even if they are broken, dented or have pieces missing,” Kevin told us. Every single item sent to Vintage Cash Cow gets re-purposed or recycled to its full potential - the entire business model relies upon vintage items being given a second lease of life. Thanks to the 80,000 people who have already used the free service,Vintage Cash Cow have repurposed or rehomed more than: - 100 tonnes of non-precious metal - 11 tonnes of jewellery - 12,500 fountain pens - 7,500 clocks

In 2021, they paid out £141,000 to charity shops for product that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. Garry Wilkinson, head of charity partnerships, said:“Supporting the charity sector is a core focus for us, and we receive feedback from shop managers all the time saying how handy it is to have a profitable outlet for non-sold and unsaleable donations.”

“What better way to celebrate my payout by taking my oldest friends on a picnic on the lawns of Buckingham Palace!” Susan, London Reclaiming your space and earning some extra money in the process is an easy three-step process: 1. BOX IT: Request a Free Postage Pack then pack up all your old items into an old cardboard box. 2. Home comforts in a time of change LAURA GUILLON ON WHY LOCAL MATTERS IN HALL BROWN’S NEW LEEDS OFFICE.

A

fter two years of uncertainty, this year feels like the time is right for something of a fresh

start. It appears to be the case on several different fronts. Even though we have not entirely rid ourselves of coronavirus, there is a real belief that people are finally regaining a sense of normal life after lockdown. In addition, the last month has seen families and family lawyers adjusting to the biggest reform in divorce law in half a century. Although not due to either of those factors, Hall Brown’s decision to establish a new office in Leeds has already been forced to confront the changes which they have wrought. The primary reason for our new premises on Park Square is the continuing increase in clients from Yorkshire - including some of the area’s leading entrepreneurs, professionals and high profile sports figures - on whose behalf we have been working since we launched as a firm six years ago.

L-R: Laura Guillon (Partner and Head of Leeds), Suzanne Smales (Consultant Partner), Sarah Hewitt (Associate) 12 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Since April 2016, Hall Brown has become known as the country’s leading boutique family law firm and an outstanding business in its own right. As well as being skilled in dealing with the full range of financial issues which can occur on divorce, we have handled a growing number of marital or relationship contracts - pre-, post-nuptial and cohabitation agreements. We have also built one of the few teams anywhere in the country dedicated to cases which arise in relation to children - a workload which is often complex and span a number of jurisdictions. Hall Brown also boasts a considerable specialism in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), a flexible process comprising mediation or arbitration for those individuals who want to settle their differences without needing to go to court. We have featured as one of The Times’ Best 200 Law Firms in each of the four years in which the rankings have been compiled and, in March, were named as

the Best Small Company To Work for from a shortlist of 50 firms from a range of business sectors across the UK. Whilst we have amassed lots of experience in helping families deal with issues in their own homes, our Leeds office is certainly not just another city location for an expanding law firm. It is very much something of a homecoming of sorts for us too. As well as myself, the team includes Suzanne Smales - who has joined Hall Brown as a consultant partner, the latest senior role in a 30-year legal career and Associate Sarah Hewitt. All of us grew up, went to school and started our careers in Leeds and the surrounding area. We understand this part of Yorkshire and what kind of help the people who live here require. It’s that degree of local knowledge allied to the expertise for which Hall Brown has become renowned that we believe can be of real benefit, especially in a time of change like this. Since the start of the pandemic, for

instance, we have seen how the stress of dealing with radically different circumstances which it brought about including the blurring of the traditional barriers between home and work or school - has created new and sometimes damaging tensions within some families. Some couples decided to press ahead with divorces despite the prioritising of cases designed to enable family courts to continue functioning while Covid-19 was at its height meant potentially facing lengthy delays. Those who did not want to wait at least two years to end their marriage were faced with the reality under the law as it stood then, of having to blame the decline of their relationship on the misconduct of their spouse. Others decided to wait, especially once the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act gained Royal Assent in June 2020. It heralded the introduction of so-called ‘no-fault’ divorce - an attractive proposition for individuals who did not want allegations of misbehaviour to aggravate whatever differences had led

to their marital collapse. The powers of the Act finally came into force last month, amid forecasts that more couples in failing relationships would seek to capitalise on the new rules to divorce. My experience and that of my colleagues indicates that conflict is actually more likely during the process of dividing a couple’s assets than when obtaining a divorce decree. It was a point acknowledged in a House of Lords’ debate only weeks before ‘no-fault’ divorces became available. The Government has promised to consider further legislative change in an effort to reduce the potential for disagreement. However, the drafting and adoption of any new law is not a rapid process. In the absence of statute, it is important that couples whose marriages are at an end take legal advice. Some two-thirds of divorces take place without spouses formally determining how to divide their joint assets. By doing so, divorced husbands and

wives leave themselves open to future claims should they receive an inheritance, secure promotion, build a successful business or even win the lottery. ‘No-fault’ divorce may certainly avoid the need to apportion blame in order to end a marriage but only skilled legal guidance will help couples steer clear of the enduring difficulties resulting from not dealing successfully with their finances at the first time of asking. Star quality HE HAS PLENTY OF GREATEST HITS TO CHOOSE FROM AND ARRIVES IN YORK THIS MONTH. MARIA ILIFFE SPOKE TO MARTI PELLOW. enowned musician, Broadway star and previous member of Wet Wet Wet, Marti Pellow is celebrating his musical career with the latest ‘Greatest Hit Tour’. Starting in Dublin and heading to York’s Barbican theatre, Marti will make is way around England and Scotland this spring. Excited to bring his fans the very best of his musical career, expect Marti’s hit songs alongside a few from his latest Stargazer album – “the clue’s in the title” said Marti in the following interview.

R

16 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Speaking with Pellow, he said: “[The tour] is a celebration of the songs people are familiar with… I feel lucky to be able to deliver what people love.” From singing popular chart hits with Wet Wet Wet from the young age of 17, Marti is known for favourites such as, Sweet Little Mystery, Love Is All Around and Angel Eyes. Proudly one of the biggest selling artists of the nineties, Pellow sung knowing his was going to be a superstar. When his father, a builder, told him to get a

proper job, he said it was pointless, because he was destined to be a huge pop star. There was simply no doubt in his mind, he says. And so it turned out. With the band going from success to success, the fame kept them rolling full steam ahead until their first separation in 1997 and then again in 2017. Battling with an alcohol and heroin addiction, the Scottish singer left the band and life behind in 1999 and now he sings with sobriety and pride.

017 NSide May22 22/04/2022 10:46 Page 1

He began his career as a solo artist with Chris Difford of Squeeze. The two met while they were patients in The Priory in March 1999. Difford subsequently became Pellow’s lyricist and unofficial helper. Marti explains: “Performing concerts, acting and my own songwriting - as an artist I feel a lot more settled in this world.” Marti has always had a lust for music, as he explains: “I used to love listening to my mum and dad’s record collection… I would see my favourite bands live and my stars singing on TV and thought ‘I want to do that’, and realised at a very young age that I wanted to sing.” Lockdown presented Pellow with the perfect opportunity to write his latest album, Stargazer. He said: “I finally got to write the songs that let me pay homage to all my heroes. I can’t wait to sing those songs live for the first time.” Singing credit to stars such as Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, Anthony Newley and David Bowie, in a series of selfpenned songs, his impression of the soul and funk-infused mid-70s Bowie is rather wonderful and Pellow says he had a great time making the album. Inspiring a different tone, he wrote the album on his guitar, instead of his usual piano, bringing a completely different feel, he said: “It was surprisingly one of my most successful albums, it was very well received.” Lockdown was a huge influence on Pellow’s new tour for numerous reasons. Singing online for fans, Marti enjoyed his musical sessions and was inspired to take them further. “I was inundated by beautiful messages from fans asking me to organise a tour once we come out of these terrible times. Twelve million people tuned in for the sessions and each one of you have inspired me to make this tour happen.” Falling in love again with the music of his past, Marti wanted to put together a show that celebrated all the wonderful music throughout his career. Pellow’s career spans many roles and his work with musicals started in 2008, following his appearance in Sir Tim Rice’s concert revival of his musical

Chess, playing the “Arbiter”. Performing in numerous West End and Broadway shows, Marti has made a proud, worldwide name for himself in the musical industry. With his love for shows, Marti, along with his friends, are currently writing a musical; he shared: “It’s based on my home country and based on traditional Scottish folk history, it’s mystical like Lord of The Rings.” Now in the pipeline and expected to be touring the UK in many years to come, Pellow is excited about this new venture and hopes fans and enthusiasts alike, will be too. However, his next move is expected much sooner, already announced, advertised and eagerly

anticipated: the Pellow Talk Tour. He explains: “Think of it as coming back to my place for a night of stories and songs. Pellow Talk is a chance to learn all about me, not just as a singer and songwriter, but as a boy and a man.” Marti is excited to speak with his fans “without a mask”, so they can get to know the real Marti Pellow and everything in his making. With many achievements in his past and many more to come, Pellow’s next performance: The Greatest Hits Tour is commencing this month and he hope’s you’ll be there too. WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?

Team PGHL at Chow Down

JORDAN ODU IS ALL SET FOR A SUMMER OF FUN.

don’t know about you, but after the action-packed bank holidays I’ve enjoyed in what seems like forever, I’m all set for a summer of fun. One of the many highlights of Easter weekend, other than consuming my own body weight in chocolate eggs and Savvy Baker treats, was the return of Chow Down. They’ve really pulled out all the stops for 2022, with a laidback Miami party vibe, awesome live acts and DJs, crazy golf and world-class food from the likes of my favourite, Sarto. Their Lamb Shoulder Ragu is the stuff of legends, it really does melt in the mouth. Another event making a welcome return is Mardi Gras at Roundhay Park on Saturday 2 July. Last summer’s party was so good, and this year’s line-up is even better. I can’t wait to check out Roger Sanchez, Clean Bandit and my and jazz will provide the soundtrack to good friend Angel Lee, who’s been what’s shaping up to be a memorable smashing it recently with her Angie’s weekend. Disco events at Angelica. After a two-year delay, I finally got to Another essential date for your diary is check out the multi-award-winning Saturday 6 August, when Wetherby hosts Book of Mormon at the Leeds Grand its first Riverside Food and Drink and it more than exceeded my Festival. As well as an idyllic pictureexpectations. The talent in the cast is perfect setting, you can look forward to next level, and as you’d expect from the a huge selection of international street House of Koko Oakwood food, from Jamaican and Greek, to Lebanese and Italian and everything in between. Leeds Cookery School, which I can highly recommend, will also be hosting The Cookery Theatre, which will showcase the talents of some amazing local chefs. Live music spanning soul, blues, pop, rock

creators of South Park, it’s dark, a little bit dirty and absolutely hilarious. Certainly not one for the easily offended but perfect for me. I’m also loving all the postponed Leeds Arena gigs finally taking place, with Dua Lipa, Craig David and Dave taking to the stage and a special shout-out to Stormzy for one of my favourite shows to date. Beer lovers and gin connoisseurs will be pleased to know that a new central

Leeds venue is on its way, with over 20 ales on draught and over 100 gins behind the bar.Taking up residence in the Bond Street building previously occupied by Roxy Lanes, Pinnacle Beer and Gin Hall will also offer live sport, pool, shuffleboard, food and skyline views overlooking the financial district. Look out for launch details coming very soon. Over at The Alchemist, which has always been one of my go-to lunch spots

and their brand-new food menu is the biggest upgrade to date giving you another reason to visit. It’s now 44 per cent plant-based and includes a collaboration with The Meatless Farm, resulting in some delicious plant-based duck bao buns and an incredibly juicy Meatless Farm burger with smoked applewood cheese. I’m usually more of a real meat kinda guy but this was nextlevel tasty. The innovative brand has also created their first completely edible Cocktail. Named The Edible One, the cocktail consists of Manzana Verde, Avallen Calvados, lime sherbet, salted caramel, apple juice and white chocolate foam. It is served in an edible cup. This truly is a weird and wonderful creation is delicious and perfect for the gram. Finally, another must-try this Spring is House of Koko Oakwood’s new evening menu. Bringing a unique supper club vibe to the already popular brunch spot, my stand-out dishes were the Szechuan Calamari, Chorizo and Prawns and the creamy Burrata – trust me, they’re so good! The specialist wine list is also amazing, it’s a great addition to Oakwood and just what the area needed. That’s all for now, I’ll be back next month with some very exciting news on new openings coming to Yorkshire very soon… Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 23

PROMOTION P ROMOTION

Ben travels full circle usiness has, in a sense, come full circle for Ben Poole and his award-winning bespoke travel company, The Travel Jour nal. The opening of the agency’s new shop, at 63 Leeds Road, Har rogate, means Ben is back working in th he place where he spent 15 years of his career in the travel business – albeit now in somewhat different circumstances. The shop was home to an independent travel agency for almost 40 years but when it was acquired by cor porate owners, Ben left to pursue his ambition of running his own company. Not that he had an easy start. “I started up, working from home, just before the pandemic strruck and put everything on hold,” he recalled. “However, it was always my plan to have my own shop, so once travel restr ictions were lifted I was able to open up in Montpelier Mews in September 2020.” Business grew impressively as people rediscovered their appetite for travel and thus, when the agency

The Travel Jour nal specialises in creating unique, bespoke travel and holiday exper iences to all parts of the world for travellers keen to seek out somewhere new. We provide a one-to-one customer service cover ing all travel requirements – and I am personally on call to help smooth h and problems.” All this helped Ben to be named Riising Star of the Year at th R he 2021 Aspire Awards, last December in London. “I was thr illed to receive the award and to be the only travel agent from Yorkshire to be nominated,” said Ben. TRAVEL

Travelling solo at the Shangri-La Paris LAURA BARTLETT RECENTLY VISITED THE PRESTIGIOUS FRENCH LOCATION ON VACATION AND IT WAS EVERYTHING THAT SHE EXPECTED AND MORE… y definition, the term ShangriLa is described as ‘an imaginary, beautiful place, often far away, where everything is pleasant and you can get anything you want’. And they’re completely right, only it’s not far away, and it’s anything but imaginary. The Shangri-La group operates fivestar luxury hotels in 22 countries across Asia Pacific, North America, the Middle East, and Europe. Their métier is world class service and tranquil surroundings, as well as unrivaled hospitality and dining, exquisite architecture and some of the most exclusive addresses in the world. And nothing says exclusive real estate quite like Paris. At 10 Av. d’Iéna, in Paris’ luxurious 16th Arrondissement, you’ll find the Shangri-La Paris - a palace quite literally fit for royalty, notably once the home of Prince Roland of the Bonaparte family. Yes, that Bonaparte family. Shangri-La’s Parisien paradise was the first of the group to open in Europe, and during the meticulous and graceful renovations (which took four years - the same amount of time it took to build back in 1896), managed to maintain the important and beautiful French heritage of the place. The marble lobby is among the grandest entryways we’ve ever seen, giving Versailles itself a run for its money. Focus shifts towards the back of the building, where the walls seem to open out into a series of magnificent gardens, full length windows, romantic balconies and sprawling panoramic terraces. But why? Because the hotel has one of the most enviable views in the world, of course. The Eiffel Tower, in all its glory, sits within reaching distance across the River Seine, shadowing the hotel in its glimmering grandeur. The best bit is that you can see this view from most of the rooms here (around six in ten) - an accolade not afforded by many other Paris lodgings. When the hotel was renovated by

none other than Pierre Yves-Rochon (of Four Seasons and Savoy fame), they chose to stick with a classic French opulence with luxury minimalism, going against the grain of the Hong Kong based group’s typical cache. But where the design says French elegance, the food says Chinese culinary excellence. Chef Christophe Moret resides over La Bauhinia, the hotel’s flagship restaurant where French and Southeast Asian

contemporary cuisine meets - if you’re looking for a recommendation, try the lobster salad. Shang Palace is the second restaurant, where culinary master Samuel Lee Sum has dedicated his menu to the very best in Cantonese cooking. So good in fact that in 2012 it became the only Chinese restaurant in France to hold a Michelin star. As expected from ShangriLa, the attention to detail here extends itself far beyond comprehension, leaving every inch of you completely satisfied.

Centrally located in the 16th arrondissement, minutes from the Champs-Elysées, the Shangri-La Paris blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality. To find out more, visit www.shangri-la.com/ paris/shangrila

Breaking Breaking Br Bread B read ith With W Ka atie Katie MARIA ILIFFE SPOKE TO KATIE PATTERSON ABOUT HER NUTRITIOUS MEALS ON WHEELS SERVICE, DELIVERED WITH CARE AND SOCIAL INTERACTION, AROUND NORTH LEEDS. reak kiing Bread witth h Katiie is a meals on wheels service th hat provides warm, nutritious meals for those who may be struggliin ng with meal preparation and cooking. It relieves the anxiety and pressure surrounding meal-ttiimes and food shopping, helping older adults live independently and reducing feeliin ngs of isolation.

B

Why did you start the business?

Workiin ng as a Covid health care assistant with hiin th he community, I got to see ffiiirrsthand the way iin n which elderly people and th heir carers were affffected dur iin ng the pandemic. It was a crushingly hard time for many elderly people, and it hasn’t stopped even now the pandemic is ‘over’. Elderly people have found it difffffiicult coming out of isolation and getting back to normal. This period highlighted the difffiiculties tth hat elderly people face. I saw many examples of depression, loss of hope and lack of support when it came to meal-time preparation and cook kiing. Many elderly people live alone, and they may be unwilling to make a meal by themselves. For others, it may be an issue of mobility. It’s difffffiicult to cook if you have standing or walkiin ng issues especially when you need to lift heavy pots and pans. Fiin nally, cognitive decline can play a role too. Many seniors may loose track of time and sk kiip meals, or simply forget to eat at set meal-times. 30 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

I wanted to create a service that ffiilled that gap for elderly people. I noticed that somethiin ng as siim mple as receiving a homecooked meal, made with love and care, could have such an enormous iim mpact on someone’s overall health and well-being. Tell us about your food?

Our ‘Daily Meal Deal’ packages provide our customers with both lunch and tea. The lunchtiiim me meal is delivered warm and ready to eat, with ttw wo difffferent options to choose ffrrom every day. It’s a well balanced meal, cooked in a health hy ncludes ffrresh vegetables - either way, and iin with hiin th he dish or as a side portion. Options include traditiional meals, for example Shepherd’s pie or someth hiing a h little different like Thai green curry. The menus we create and the way our food is presented does not have a ‘meals on wheels’ look to it. Meals are often sprinkled with parsley and desserts dusted with icing sugar; everyytthing has a homecooked feel to it. Our evening tea ttiime packs iin nclude sandwich ffiiin ngers, a light dessert, a savoury side portiion and a highly nutrittiious complimentary pot of home-made soup or a fruit smootth hie. Where is it made?

We operate from a commercial k kiitchen where a full range of facilitiies and equipment is used to run a safe food business.

How does it meet the needs of your customers?

For many elderly people, there is a ffiine line bettw ween liviin ng independently and needing some extra assistance. Our service offffers the extra support that they may need, often removing the need for a ng and food carer to help with cookiin shopping. For some people who are looking after theiirr loved ones, it can be tricky, especially when balancing care giving responsibilities with cleaniin ng, cookiin ng and providing for themselves and their own famiilly too. Our service takes away that added pressure. Our customers know that a friendly and familiar face wiilll be popping around with the food delivery and th hat there’s an extra pair of eyes look kiing out for them. For our service users who suffffer with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, we can be in contact with th he famiilly and give regular updates on how the delivery went for that extra peace of mind. For customers returning home ffrrom surgery with limited mobiillity, our service helps them to concentrate on recovery and to rest without having to worry about meal-times. Does it change seasonally?

Every four weeks we rotate our menus and th hen, after eight weeks, we create a new menu. This is to take tth he mundane feeliin ng out of meal-times. We also give our customers an opportunity to provide

A range of the meals available

feedback on meals that tth hey would like on the menus and we supply a different meal option for them to try. We added sticky toffffee pudding to the menu because we know it’s one of our customers’ favourite desserts. During the winter, we liik ke to add home-made soups to our teatime packs. We know that it’s an ideal food for older adults, particularly tth hose living with dementia, who sometimes forget to eat and driin nk. Offffering a bowl of soup can be a wonderful way to give someone additional calor ies and nutrients and keep them warm during the colder months. Throughout the summer we introduce more hydrating foods, iin ncluding homemade smootth hie shots in our tea tiiim me packs. For those who are fond of sweeter ffllavours, tth his is a more enticing optiion that also provides extra fflluids. Evidence shows that stayiin ng well hyd drated can prevent falls, constipation, blood pressure problems and headaches. We put lots of raw ffrruits and vegetables into our meals to help alleviate these issues. Adding sliced letttuce and tomato to a sandwich, or fresh berries to a yogurt may not seem much but iin ncorporating these items daily can help to keep you hyd drated; especially during hot weather without signiffiicantly changing the amount of liquid iin ntake. How is it packaged and delivered?

Our hot food is packaged in aluminium contaiin ners. They are robust, lighttw weight

Katie and customer Valerie Keates

and good for retain niing heat. They are also environmentally friendly and easy to recycle. The food containers are ttrransported in hot boxes and delivered by one of our ffrriendly community assistants in their own vehicles. We are more than happy to step inside and put tea time packs iin n a refr igerator for later in the evening, or help plate up food if required. We can also include labelling on tea ttiime packs to state the contents and when it should be eaten for those who require a remiin nder. How is it more than just a ‘meals on wheels’ service?

Break kiing Bread with Katie br ings together the combiin nation of both nutrition and social interaction; tth hat’s what we are founded on. We are a service with a personal touch. We know tth hat if a customer can’t stand carrots, we ensure their meals don’t contain that vegetable. We spend time with clients who may not see anyone for most of th he day or we can send a text message to fam miily members to reassure tth hem that theiirr loved one is OK. We help th hose who may feel isolated by putting them in contact with local agencies and charities th hat can offer additional support and help. We genuiin nely care about the overall health and welfare of our customers and want to see elderly people iin n the area thrive.

FEATURE F EATURE

How important is the personal contact with customers when delivering food?

Building companionship bettw ween ourselves and our customers is what makes our job worthwhile. The social and cariin ng aspect of the busiin ness gives us a urn, it helps sense of pride as staffff, and in tu customers feel more at ease. Even some who are very independent use th he service occasionally to have a treat duriin ng the week. It’s nice to be able to provide a service with a smile along with theiirr welcome delivery. What feedback have you had from your customers?

The response tth hat I’ve had ffrrom ng tth he customers has really made startiin business wortth hwhile. Many caregivers have told us with how Breakiin ng Bread with Katie has given tth hem an opportunity to live their own lives without having to worry about their loved ones not eattiing throughout the day. One lady said that ng to eat meals and her mum was refusiin watched her mother push food around the plate before she used our service. Now her mother looks forward to every meal and enjoys choosing her monthly orders. Some new customers are apprehensive at ffiirst. There’s a certain stigma attached to meals on wheels and the quality of the food. Some older people may have certain feeliin ngs around accepting home help too. However, when they try our food and get to meet us they quick klly their minds. They

have a sense of pr ide about being able to enjoy eatiin ng delicious food without the hassle of preparation or shoppiin ng. How did The Prince’s Trust help you to get started?

As a 26 year old single mum, working as a care assistant witth h not very much education beh hiind me, the prospect of startiin ng a business was very scary. I approached The Pr iin nce’s Trust in early 2021 with nothing but a vision for ‘Break kiing Bread with h Katie’. The ffiirst thiin ng tth he Trust did for me was install a positive belief that I was capable of buiillding a business and th heir support and mentorship was invaluable. The business executives and mentors ffrrom The Prince’s Trust have a great deal of kn k nowledge and experience of runniin ng successful businesses. They taught me about how to run a busiin ness through webinars and one-to-one traiin ning. They checked my business plan to make sure it was viable and assisted me ffiinancially towards setting up my business. The Prince’s Trust helps many young entrepreneurs by opening doors and providing opportun niities for them to ensure they have a have a fair chance of succeeding. How have they helped you to develop your business?

My business mentors, Caroline Dunk and Teah Lewis have gone above and beyond to help me get to where I am today. They

have pushed me towards my goals and he encouraged me not to give in when th going gets tough. Setting up a new selfemployed business can be a lonely experience. I don’t have colleagues or a manager to ask for help at work; everytth hing is my responsibility. Haviin ng support from The Prince’s Trust means there’s someone to turn to if I get stuck. They are at the otth her end of the phone and always happy to help. What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to keep buiillding and spreading awareness about our service and providing help to as many elderly people as possible to give them a better quality of life. Is there anyone who you would like to thank for helping you on your journey?

I would like to thank Jo & A An ndrew Lowe, Maria Chilvers, Rev. Dave Young and his wife Jo, Bob Holt and the many other members of tth he congregattiion at St. Barnabas Church in Alwoodley. They have supported me personally with their kiind words of encouragement and prayers k since starting out on th hiis venture – and h it’s greatly appreciated.

Declutter those clothes SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR BURSTING, WINTER WARDROBE AND WELCOME THE SUN WITH YOUR FAVOURITE CLOTHING HUNG WITH PRIDE. BY MARIA ILIFFE. ith the start of spring, why not be true to the season and do some spring cleaning/sorting of your own. Now looking at your more summery clothes with longing, it can be extremely beneficial to have a sort out of your garments, sectioning for seasons. Having less clothing in your wardrobe/on display will save time when you’re getting dressed, help you wear items forgotten about, save money on buying more clothes when you realise you have enough to re-style… the list goes on.

W

The first step in decluttering your wardrobe: put all your clothes in one pile; seeing everything in front of you will put your shopping in perspective, also this will force you to look at every item. This step is great if you have a day alone to deal with the mass, however if not, sorting for short periods here and there can still achieved the desired organisation.

1

Sectioning your clothes into: workout, comfy, going out, summer, winter, holiday, sleeping etc will help you see which areas need the most downsizing. However, if over

2

consumption is your issue, it may be more beneficial to organise them into piles of: never worn, not been worn for year, hope to wear again someday, uncomfortable, ill-fitting. These categories help bring reason when wanting to keep everything ‘just in case’. Now look at every item, giving each a moment of questioning: Do I love this? Do I wear this? Do I need this? If you answer ‘no’ for any, then it’s time to let go of your item. Thanking the item for its use, as advised by famous expert Marie Kondo, helps us to feel less attached to items we no longer need, thanking them for their service and respectfully re-homing them.

3

Once you’ve looked at every item and the clothes are in reduced sections, look back to your wardrobe space. Planning where each section will go can improve how easy it is to get dressed or find clothes and outfits; prioritising you favourite/every day or work clothes is important for easy access. Using organisers for sections with different categories will further help with order, e.g. using shoe separators/a rack, instead of piling them on a shelf or draw dividers for different types of socks etc. Storing away big winter coats and clothing will give more space and practicality to your spring/summer wardrobe.

4

Disposing of your clothes is one of the most important steps in decluttering, this is where you’re given a chance to re-home your beloved garments. If any are of value it’s smart to list them on second-hand websites like eBay, Depop or Vinted and if not then donating them to charity helps others find new outfits and gives back to your local community. Equally if you’re crafty you could cut or sew to transform your old, ripped or ill-fitting garments into wearable ones.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and how could it benefit YOU? LEEDS-BASED OXIFY ARE EXPERTS IN THIS ENLIGHTENING TREATMENT. What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? Referred to as HBOT, involves the delivery of increased levels of oxygen inside a hyperbaric chamber where the pressure around the body is increased for a prescribed session of usually 60 minutes. The air we normally breathe contains 21 per cent oxygen, along with 78 per cent nitrogen (and the rest made up of noble gases and carbon dioxide). But within the chamber, you breathe 95 per cent oxygen – which can significantly increase the amount of oxygen dissolved in the bloodstream. The first Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber was used in the 1930s and it is a wellestablished treatment for decompression sickness, a potential risk of scuba diving. It’s even used by the NHS for wounds that may not heal as a result of diabetes or radiation exposure.

Why does breathing more oxygen help? The air we breathe generally provides

enough oxygen for both normal body metabolism and repair to tissue damage after injury or illness. But a boost in those levels can enhance the body’s ability to heal, and the increased flow of oxygen stimulates and restores function to damaged cells and organs; HBOT has been found to encourage the formation of new collagen (connective tissue) and new skin cells by encouraging new blood vessel formation. On a cellular level, HBOT helps rejuvenate cells, supplies you with energy, supports your immune system, and much more.

How does the therapy work? The therapy involves you relaxing, fully clothed, with an oxygen mask placed over your nose and mouth in your own personal chamber, while the oxygen is delivered. HBOT is a non-invasive procedure which clients find easy-going and relaxing. Your host will monitor you throughout to ensure you are happy and at ease.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? For anti-ageing and beauty: HBOT provides an ideal alternative to more invasive treatments such as Botox or surgery as the supplemented oxygen levels can improve blood flow, boost cell metabolism, facilitate collagen production, contribute to microscopic blood vessel growth and, on the surface level, increase skin elasticity.

Sporting focus: HBOT is not only a key component to recovery from sports injuries, it can help improve mental focus and energise your mind and body ready for your next big match or event. Using HBOT as part of your training programme can reduce recovery times reduced by up to 33 per cent – just ask top athletes who use HBOT to aid recovery from injuries as well as aid match day performance.

Alleviating symptoms: Several conditions can cause low blood oxygen levels, including asthma, anaemia and Covid-19. HBOT can be a versatile treatment used alongside conventional medicine for a host of wide-ranging health conditions from migraines and depression to dementia (https://www.agingus.com/article/203485), Long Covid, sudden hearing loss and multiple sclerosis, acting as an effective strategy to boost recuperation as well as helping to decrease the severity of symptoms.

General health and wellbeing: HBOT can help to improve brain function, memory and mood, helping you to feel sharp, focused and productive, users report feeling more alert and energetic. 38 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

INTERVIEW

Where it all began OWNER OF SUKHOTHAI, BAN KAEWKRAIKHOT, LOOKS BACK AT 20 YEARS OF BUSINESS IN LEEDS. ward-winning restaurant Sukhothai, which opened in Chapel Allerton in 2002, celebrates in 20th year in business this year. Over two decades it has grown to become one of Yorkshire’s most beloved hospitality brands, spawning additional restaurants in central Leeds and Harrogate as well as the street food dining brand, Zaap Thai, which will be opening its sixth site in Sheffield later this year. Northside spoke to owner Ban Kaewkraikhot about the last 20 years and her plans for the future.

A

When you opened the first Sukhothai in 2002, what was the concept behind the restaurant?

Back in 2002 there were hardly any Thai restaurants in the UK, I saw this as an opportunity to introduce Thai food to the people of Leeds. I wanted to showcase as much Thai cuisine as I could, so when we opened Sukhothai Chapel Allerton we opened with a vast menu of over 200 dishes. Sukhothai’s ethos has always been the same since day one; offer outstanding, authentic Thai food, with first-class service, in sophisticated and comfortable surroundings. How would you describe your menus?

Over the years our menu has become much more refined however still retains many dishes from the original menu in 2002.You’ll find sharing platters, soups, salads, curries, noodles and so much more. We want to offer our guests variety so they can come back and try 46 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

something new each time. We also like to keep things fresh by introducing seasonal specials and using local suppliers for our meat and vegetables. We have a large drinks menu which includes Thaiinspired cocktails, Asian beers and a premium wine list. Who, or what, are your biggest inspirations when it comes to cooking?

My mother is without doubt my biggest inspiration, she taught me everything I know and my passion for cooking came from her. I have great memories of my childhood learning my mother’s recipes and cooking with her every day. We’re big Zaap fans. How did the concept for the brand differ from what you offered at Sukhothai?

Zaap Leeds will be seven years old this year and was really born out of our want to diversify and go into the casual dining market. We wanted to create somewhere that guests could dine in a more laid back and fun setting.

What’s your favourite street food dish on the menu, and why?

Tough question, that would be like a mother choosing her favourite child! If I had to pick one I would probably choose, Som Tum with sticky rice. Som Tum is a Thai papaya salad; it’s a spicy combination of shredded green papaya, carrot, tomatoes and green beans, with chilli, garlic, lime, fish sauce and peanuts. It’s a dish I have shared many times with family and friends and it always reminds me of home. What do you love about Leeds and its food scene?

Leeds is a fantastic city; it’s been my home for over 20 years and it’s where it all began for me. There are so many fantastic operators in Leeds, it’s incredibly diverse food scene means I can try new foods all the time. So Ban, what lies ahead for you now?

To be honest I’m just happy to have our restaurants open and doing what we do best; cooking for our fantastic customers. The support from our customers throughout Covid has been really amazing. We’ve received so many heartfelt messages, people are really happy we’re back open again. Hopefully things can now start to get back to normal and we can start looking to the future. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for their support over the past 20 years, it’s really what has kept us going. www.sukhothai.co.uk www.zaapthai.co.uk

Food fans will have lots to drool over as Residents Kitchens are back after a successful launch at last year’s Winter Village. The downtown food village will feature two resident kitchens and three weekly rotating kitchens. Chow Down has become known for its eclectic mix of rotating street food vendors, and though this year will be no different, the venue will also be welcoming a handful of traders for a longer stint, bringing fresh and different ideas to their menus across the season. For the first seven weeks, Chow Down will welcome MorMor (Middle Eastern, North African and Mediterranean Street Food) and Sarto (pasta, sharing boards and more) who will launch special menus. Joining the resident kitchen further down the line will be Boro Slice (Detroit Style Pizza) and parmo’s will be hitting the venue for the first time, with Parmageddon later in the year. Holy Mountain will also be bringing his incredible BBQ and the brand new steak restaurant from Asada Kitchen will be also joining later in the year to ensure a sizzling summer. Dave Olejnik, owner Sarto, added: “Chow Down has been such a fixture on the Leeds hospitality calendar for so long that we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it! We’ll be bringing a version of Sarto for the first seven weeks that

features all the favourites people have come to know, as well as new ideas and menu items that will allow people to share and enjoy the spring weather!” The Weekly changing Kitchens until the end of May include the likes of Bastards Bistro, Spuds and Bros, Little Red Food Truck, Twisted Meal, Tikka Chance on Me, Big Mouth Gyoza, Mans Market and new traders Bao to the Sando, keeping the line-up fresh with something different each weekend. Simon Fogal, Founder, Chow Down/ Leeds Indie Food, said: “It has me thinking about the sunny days, a few drinks, some

golf and incredible food. The Resident Kitchens are back and we can’t wait to see what the chefs come up with through the whole season from Easter to September. We will have around 50 traders at ChowDown this year, which is incredible.” Bookings for Chow Down are on sale now via the website. EATING OUT

Cosy vibes and proper portions SIMON FOGAL EXPERIENCES AUTHENTIC PUB DINING AT THE MALT SHOVEL, BREARTON. ccording to its website, The Malt Shovel is a quaint, 16th-century country village pub and restaurant with rustic charm – a description that had me hooked straight away. My table is booked for 6pm on a somewhat wintry late-spring evening, and after a stressful week, I’m ready to enjoy the treats on offer. Brearton is a small village, just three miles north of Knaresborough. There are no shops here, just around 40 houses and a single pub – The Malt Shovel itself – owned by general manager, Marek Juszczyk and Sylwia Matusiak, and claiming one of the best Sunday

roasts in Yorkshire. Stepping into the pub, the first thing that hits me is the comforting roar of an open fire – the ultimate ingredient in a cosy atmosphere. It already feels like a welcome break from city living, and the pub’s stone floors, wood panelling and oodles of character all add to the heartwarming effect. There are several dining spaces here, allowing for guests to sit with plenty of space between tables. We’re seated at a cosy table by a fire in one of the smaller rooms, with the rest of the building comprising the bar area plus two other equally authentic spaces. There are fresh

flowers, fireplaces and historic pictures of Knaresborough throughout – all contributing to the relaxed, authentic vibe. The wine menu is substantial, boasting 12 whites, 13 reds and three rosés, plus four sparkling options and a dessert wine. We opt for a couple of beers as we peruse the food menu – a pint of Theakston Best for me and half a Rudgate South Pacific Ale for my partner. The recent resurgence of cask ales has brought some hearty flavour back to the taps for many pubs, and I’m pleased to enjoy the nostalgia of a proper pint next to a roaring fire. Nothing beats it.

EATING OUT

When it comes to food, the menu is small but well-balanced, laid out in traditional starter-main-dessert format. The specials add an extra three dishes to choose from, making for a foodie line-up featuring everything from pub classics (think Deep Fried Brie and Chicken Liver Pâté) to more inventive options like Whitby Prawn Popcorn. We start with the Whitebait (£6.80) and Bang Bang Salad (£6.90), followed by the Cajun Fish (£16.50) and Holme Farm Venison (£21.90) – a selection that gives us a good balance of tradition and innovation. The whitebait arrives lightly breaded and in its own bowl, with a side salad and homemade tartare sauce for that classic tanginess. As for the Bang Bang Salad, it’s a towering serving of crispy chicken doused in sweet chilli and peanut sauce and sitting atop a bed of lettuce and spring onions – absolutely delicious, with the nuttiness adding a subtle umami edge. Our waiting staff are attentive, coming over to take our wine order and stoke up the fire before our mains arrive. I choose a large glass of Marek’s personal favourite, the Prunus Dao Tinto, while my partner selects a New Zealand

Sauvignon Blanc. Our mains arrive, and like the starters, the serving sizes are nothing short of huge – in keeping with the pub’s promise of ‘proper’ portions. Despite this, we’re blown away. The Cajun Fish is essentially two haddock fillets stacked, perfectly spiced and served with a huge salad. There are thick-cut onions, garlic mayonnaise, a pile of crispy fries and a sense of simplicity that allows the fish to shine through. The venison arrives with a boat of mash plus plump green beans, braised red cabbage and a miniature saucepan of jus on the side. It’s cooked just to my liking – melting in the mouth and complemented by the savoury creaminess of the mash and freshness of the steamed green beans. I set aside some of the jus for the fries, which we enjoy dipping in until it’s all gone. Feeling fuller than I can remember, and revelling in our distinguished Friday night at this incredible pub, we lay our cutlery down and consider our options. Not one to do things by halves, we decide to share the Sticky Toffee Pudding (£7.50) – a soft, light sponge bathed in thick caramel sauce served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a

giant strawberry balancing on top. Add to that a double espresso and a couple of After Eight Mints as we leave, and you’ve got a stunner of a meal. As the cold hits us on the way out, our hearts are still sipping wine by the fire in this hidden gem of Harrogate. This place is perfect for walkers and explorers (but be aware of their no-dogs policy) in search of well-cooked grub or a belting Sunday roast. Seamless service, great atmosphere, hearty food and space for bookings of all sizes? The future certainly looks bright for The Malt Shovel. The field has changed beyond recognition in those two centuries and now includes what the US historians Schmiechen and Carls call “one of the finest examples of market hall architecture”. Food writer Grace Dent wrote about the market saying, “it (Leeds Kirkgate Market) is a joyful thing, and an unusual one. Old-school butchers and fishmongers, clothes stalls and spice vendors happily live side by side with Vietnamese banh mi sellers, a florist and a woman who sells knitting wool.” ** Leeds Kirkgate Market Heritage Tours are FREE, but booking is essential. ** Book online at www.leedsmarkets.co.uk or scan the QR code below
