Tim quicklyacquaintedhimself with the caskale market butfoundit had been largelycommoditised, withalongheld preconceptionthat caskaleswere seen asacheaper product withlittleor no recognitionofqualityreflectedinthe price. He recalledanearlymeeting with alandlordat a pubinCheshire who wanted to stop sellingLandlorddespite it being hugely popularwithhiscustomers

“WhenI askedwhyhe said ‘ you’retoo expensiveI can ’t make anymoney on it’,” remembered Tim, who suggested tothe landlordhe raised theprice by 40pper pint.“He said “I can ’t, allmyaleshaveto bethe sameprice ’ Atthe sametimeI noticed thischalkboardwhere youhada listofg in and tonicswitha £4 difference betweenthe cheapest and the most expensive. SoI said ‘ youcanput£4 differenceon a g in and tonicbut you can ’tput40pon abeeryouknowyour customerslove?’.”

The industryhadallowed thismentality to creep intothe businessbutTaylor’sdid notplay thegame.Tim’s predecessorheld firm ontheir pricing structure andrefused to compromiseonquality

“If youwantto knowwhy Taylor’sare stillhere, it’sbecausethefamilyandmy predecessorsstuck totheir principles,” said Tim.“We’renotgoingtofightforvolume andwe’renotgoingto do an injusticeto thequalityweproduce, that’s the road to ruin.”

It’samovethat hasstood themingood steadand Timhasbeen ableto build onthis traditionofqualitybymaking improvements toother parts ofthe business, mostnotably onthe marketing andsales side.Timothy Taylor’s employsbetween8590people at itsbrewerysite making itone ofthe largestemployersinKeighley. It also has 19pubs,twoof which theyrun themselves- Taylor’s onTheGreen in Keighleyand The WoollySheep in Skipton.

“WhenI star ted I didsome research andinLondon, 50percentof caskale drinkershadn ’t heard ofTimothy Taylor’s or Landlord,” said Tim.“I recruited our first-evermarketingperson andbrought in a newsalesdirectorwho hadrunthefield sales forcefor Carlsberg so knew exactly whatthe standardswere.”

The resultshave beentang ible. When Timstar tedin2014Taylor’saccounted for one inevery50pints of caskale servedin the country, that’s nowincreased toone in every 20.The sit atnumber two inthe caskale market, behind Doom Barbut ahead ofthe likes ofGreeneKingIPA, Marston’s Pedig ree, Fuller’s LondonPride and BlackSheep.

Inthat research thatTimconducted, he alsofound thattheir target market was older, asyou’d expectforcaskale. Marketing hasbeenfocused ontryingto attract ayoungerclientele - 30-somethings rather than20-somethings-and the businesshas par ticipatedateventslike Carfest, Skipton Food &DrinkFestival and Keswick Mountain Festivalin attempt

totap intothismarket.

“Caskale isstillmore reasonably priced than something likeNeck Oil,” added Tim.“Becauseofthefinancial pressure, we feellike[ayoungermarket] isdiscovering usandrealising we’re moderately priced and good.I hopethat continues WhenI lookatthe craftingthatgoesintoourales, Ithinkwe’reexcellent value.”

Qualityissomethingthat we keep coming back to but isso intrinsic to Timothy Taylor’s, it’s par tofthe reason why the recipeoftheiraward-winning Landlordhas not changedinover 70 years. The brewerystilluse whole leaf hops, as opposed tothe hoppellets the majority of breweries nowuse, whichare sourcedin Slovenia

“I lookedinto it andduringthe1950s theUK couldn ’tproducethe amountof hops neededsoTaylor’shad to use Slovenian hops,”explained Tim. “Although that varietyis now g rown in theUK, we don ’tfeelit’s the samequality aswegetfromSlovenia.”

Despitethesetraditions,thisdoesn ’t meanthatTimothy Taylor’isresistantto change andin2020theylaunched their first-everkeggedale,HopicalStorm, a 4% ABV aromatic, dry-hooped, moder npale that has performed exceptionallywell

“We’reg rowing anddoing reallywell but if we wantto be aroundin another 150 years, myviewis that we’ve alsogot to be in a g rowthsector,” said Tim.“That’s whywe’vegotHopicalStorm, that’s not to detractfrom Landlord or our other caskales.”

Timothy Taylor’shasalso had to compete withanemerg ing‘craft’market, although Timdoesn ’t seethese small batchbreweriesasdirect competition.

“Alotofthese smallbreweriesare reallyinto range andwill offerlots of differentthingsand I don ’tthink that’s us,” commented Tim.“That’s par tly because, frankly, we’re rightnear the limits ofourcapacityandsecondlybecause we justfeelwe wouldratherhave a few, dare I say,‘star’ products, than lots of different things Sometimes I’m enviousbutthen we meet with themand they’reenvious of us.I’mamarketingguysoI wouldrather have a few ‘power’brands than avery fragmentedrange.”

After 165years Timothy Taylor’shas clearlyhiton awinningformulaand the good newsis, there’slotsmoreto come. Theproud Yorkshire businesshas embraced tradition and quality to serve up somefine ales. It’smorethan wor th raising a glass to.Make mine a pint.

3.Create a packing list. Anystand out eventsyou need tofocus on, awedding orhikingtrip?Make sure youadd these items to yourlist anddon ’tforget essentialslike chargers

4. Focus onpackingpieces that can be wor n with each otherin at least3-5 different ways.

Howtoturnyourvisionsintorealitywiththepowerofmanifestation

It’s timeto leave behind the strugglesandlimitations ofthe past andmanifest allyourhear t’s desires.Hi,I’m Isabella, and I’mhereto guide you on yourjour ney to creating the lifeof yourdreams Sog rabacupof tea,get comfy, andlet’sdive in.

First, let’s talkabout manifestation. Manifestation is the ar tof creating your reality throughyour thoughts, beliefs, andactions. It’sabout aligning your energywithwhat youdesire andletting the universe workitsmag ic.But, let’sbe real, manifestation is not just about sittingon yourcouchanddaydreaming about what youwant. It requiresaction, intention, andadeep understandingof your true self.

So, howdo youmanifest in2023? First and foremost, get clear on yourdesires What do youreallywant?Take some timeto visualise yourideallife andwrite it down.Be specificanddetailed. And, most impor tantly, letgoof anylimiting beliefs that maybe holding youback. Remember, the universe isabundant and wantsyou to haveeverything youdesire.

Next, it’s timeto shift youridentity What does that mean?It meansaligning your thoughts, beliefs, andactionswith the versionof yourself who alreadyhas what youdesire.Think of it asbecoming theperson who lives the life youwant. Thismayrequire you to letgoofold beliefsandhabits thatno longerserve you.Buttrust me, it’swor thit.

Now, let’s talkaboutovercoming your traumaand oldbeliefs.Thisiscrucial because your pastexperiencescan create limiting beliefs that blockyou from manifesting what youwant.Take some timeto reflecton your past andidentify any patter ns orbeliefs that maybe holding youback.Thismayrequire some innerwork, suchas therapy, jour naling, ormeditation. But remember, youhave thepower to change yourbeliefsand create a newreality foryourself.

Remember, youare capableof creating anything youdesire.Youare a powerful being withlimitless potential.Don’t let anyonetellyou otherwise.Trust inthe universe and trust in yourself. The jour neymay not alwaysbeeasy, but it willbe wor thit. So,gooutthere and manifest yourbest life.

Manifesting isalot likeordering a pizza.Youcan ’t just siton yourcouch and expectthepizza guy to showup withyourdream pie.Youhavetopickup thephone, place your order, andwaitfor itto arrive. Andlet metellyou, the waiting is the hardestpar t!Butfear not, my friends.I’mheretog ive yousome tips on how to makethe manifesting processalittleeasierandalot morefun.

•Getspecific. Just like youwouldn ’t ordera pizzawith notoppings, youcan ’t manifest vague desires.Get specificabout what youwant, andbe clearaboutthe details. What doesyourdreamlife look

like?Howdo you feelinthat reality?

What arethe specific thingsyouwantto manifest? Write it alldown, and get as detailedas possible.

•Visualizelikeaboss. Close your eyes and picture yourself living yourdreamlife. Seethe details, hear the sounds, and feel theemotions.Make it asrealas possible in yourmind.Thiswillhelp youalign your thoughtsand feelingswithyourdesires, andattracttheminto yourreality

•Takeinspiredaction. Remember the pizzaanalogy? Well, youhavetotake inspiredactionto make yourdreams cometrue.Thismeans taking steps towardsyour goals, even iftheyare small ones. It’saboutputting inthe workand showingthe universethat you ‘ re serious about yourdesires •Practicegratitude. Thisis the secret sauceto manifesting. When you’re g rateful forwhat youalreadyhave, you attract more abundance into yourlife. Take amomenteachday to acknowledgethethingsyou’rethankful for, andwatchasmore blessingscome yourway

Happy Manifesting!

Vaginal dryness and intimate health

or many women talking about their intimate health is often a taboo. Vaginal dryness is extremely common and nothing to be embarrassed about. In The Harrogate Clinic we support women with their intimate symptoms. I am Dr Farzana Khan, an advanced aesthetic doctor and GP with a special interest in women’s intimate health. I would like to break the silence and taboo around vaginal dryness and raise awareness around alternative treatments available to treat intimate concerns. I am offering a range of treatments for women at The Harrogate Clinic, including Desirial and Desirial Plus.

The main cause of vaginal dryness is decreased estrogen levels during and after menopause, but also after breast cancer treatments and childbirth. Reduced estrogen can cause your vaginal tissues to become thinner and less elastic which results in vaginal irritation, itching and often painful intercourse.

Desirial is a gel specifically formulated to preserve women’s health in the vulvovaginal area. This gel formulation is specifically designed for peri-menopausal and menopausal women and women in the reproductive age. Several studies have assessed the effects of Hyaluronic acid (HA) on physical and sexual symptoms associated with dry vagina with a significant improvement in patient satisfaction and sexual function after treatment. Desirial, when injected in the vagina, stimulates collagen formation and is designed to restore hydration, elasticity, and sensitivity of the vulvo-vaginal area.

Many women experience changes in their vaginal labia at some stage in their lives. Common problems include, sagging of the labia or uneven labia (asymmetry) and women are often embarrassed to discuss and seek treatment for this. Desirial Plus is a vaginal labial filler designed to remodel outer lips of the vulva, which has lost partial volume of total volume. Desirial can help even out any asymmetries in your labia and has shown

to improve the quality of life for 93 per cent of women following treatment.

Unlike other treatments, a single Desirial dermal filler is usually enough to give you the desired effect. To get the maximum results, you should receive this treatment at least every one to two years.

To arrange a consultation to discuss available treatments, please contact The Harrogate Clinic.

TheQueenConsor t will take place at WestminsterAbbey on Saturday6 May.To celebratethe coronationofKingCharles III, a commemorative hallmarkhasbeen approvedby theBritish Hallmarking Counciland thefour UK Assay Offices, oneof whichisright here in Yorkshire.

Based on amedalby IanRankBroadleyFRBSandusing ar twork suppliedby ThomasFattorini, the mark depicts theKing’sheadagainst anoval backg round. It can be applied togold, silver, platinum or palladiumitemsby request.

The hallmarkcame‘live ’ on1March andwillbe available until theend of December 2024.It can beplaced anywhere viableonthe itembeing hallmarkedandcan differin sizefrom the compulsorycomponent marks

“We’ve alreadyseen ahuge amount of interest, thingslikethiscan really boost business,” saidAshley Carson, Assay Masterat SheffieldAssay Office.

“We’reproud of it, we reallywantto promote it andwillbeputting iton all our products.”

Ashleyis nowin his 46thyearatthe Assay Office,30of whichhe’sserved asAssay Master–he’llcelebrate his anniversarylater thisyear.

The Assay Office isresponsiblefor testingthepurity ofpreciousmetalsit isimpossibletotell theprecious metalcontentof an itemjust by looking at it.Gold, silver, platinumand palladiumaretoo softto use alonefor making jewellery, cutleryand other goodsand need to be alloyedwith othermetals formanufacturing. To protectthe consumer, the Assay Office will test ar ticles to make surethattoo muchbase metalhas not been used, at the sametimeensuringthe manufacturer’s peaceof mindby providing an independent assessment ofqualityandcontent.

The SheffieldAssay Office dates

back to1773 when an Actof Parliamentthepreviousyearappointed 30 localmen as ‘Guardians ofthe Standard of WroughtPlate intheTown of Sheffield’ to supervisethe work of theoffice andassayandhallmarksilver. Thisworkcontinues tothisdayand, as the13thAssay Master, Ashleyhasbeen instrumentalinthe developmentofthe business, which nowhasaworldwide reputation.

Ashleyisa Yorkshireman bor n and bredwho holds the distinctionof beingthe youngest Assay Master ever appointed. He joined theoffice in 1977, continuedhis education at Chesterfield College where he studied silversmithing and then workedhisway through theorganisation – from sampler, marker, computermanager and generalmanager, before being appointedAssay Master 1993 atthe ageofonly 32.

Oneof hisbiggest achievementsin his tenure was the relocatingoftheir offices from Por tobello Streettonew pur posebuiltpremises onBeulah RoadinHillsborough

We’d essentially outg rownthe building,” Ashleysaid ofthe decisionto move.“We star ted off withahouse thenput anextensionon it,then a g ranny flat, then anotherstoreyand you endup withabuildingthat’sjust a total nightmaretoget workround. It wasn ’tproductive.

“I reckon itneededabout£1million justtogetthingsupto speedso,on the back of quite abigproper tyboominthe city centre in2005/6, we sold the whole one-acre sitefor £4million, bought this pieceof land for £800,000 and for justover £3millionputthisin. We’ve neverlookedback, it’s perfectforus.”

Fur therwork to improvethe building hasincluded the installationof solar panelsand LED lighting throughout.

Ashley oversees65staff atthe SheffieldAssay Office, many of which almost rival the Assay Master for longevity of service.

“Outofthe 65 I’vegot12 staff who have been hereover 25years,” he said “OutofthatI’vegotthreethat’sbeen over 30 years, one who’s nearly 40… so we’vegot areally good team.”

Goodcustomerrelationsareessential tothe servicethe Assay Officeprovides andAshleyis proud ofthe consistently highstandardshisstaff set.

“Outofthe last month, wephoned 12 customersandall ofthembar one gave us tenoutoften,” he commented “Theonethat didn ’t isacustomerin Leicesterandhe said ‘I’m only g iving you nineoutoften.I would g ive you ten if you open an Assay office in Leicester nextto myshop!’We’vegot sucha goodrappor t withcustomers andit’sdowntoourstaff.”

UnderAshley’sleadership, Sheffield Assay Office has g rown itsreputation as oneofthe leading, proactive and efficientoffices. He hasalso been responsibleforbroadeningthe scopeof the Assay Office work, having identified theoppor tunities for g rowth in analyticalservices

In additionto hallmarking, thisservice notonly providesmetalsanalysisand cer tification but alsooperatesin areas asdiverse assmelting andassay of bullion, mineralanalysisandland contamination investigations, mercury screening andmedicalresearch, plating thicknessmeasurement and nickel testing.

Clients for these servicesare drawn fromadiverse rangeof businessand industrybuttheyshare acommon need- forabsolute integ rity of service and evaluation.

SheffieldAssay Office was oneof thefirst laboratories to beg iven UKASaccreditation andis proud to have retained that accreditation continuously for 40 years, eachyear satisfyingthe stringent demands ofthe standard

Hallmarking remains the coreof theirbusinessandaswellworking withjewellery, silverware and the like theydoget requests that can be deemed ‘outoftheordinary’.

“Weonce hadasilverbed quite a fewyearsago -we had totakethe window outtoget itthrough,” said Ashley.“We also hada 42-levelcake stand forSultanof somethingor other

We requested to actuallysee it made and theonly place it couldbe done wasaschoolspor tshallbecause it went so high.”

Back tothe coronation andaswell being instrumentalinthe development ofthenewhallmark, the Sheffield Assay Office hasalso made avery special g iftfor KingCharles III, which willbepresentedafter the coronation has takenplace.

“To commemoratethePlatinum Jubilee we sentHer Majestya g iftof a solidsilversardinetin, whichwasmade by Rebecca Jocelyn,” addedAshley.“I didsome researchand found [His Majesty] likes gardening soI’mhaving asilverwatering can made. It’sasmall one witha nice big hallmarkdown it.”

The roleof Assay Masterstill remainsverymuchhands-onfor Ashleybut afteralmostfive decades of service, hashethought about winding down?

“InOctobermychairman here [Charles Tur ner] becomes Master Cutler,” commentedAshley.“He said to me,‘you’regoingnowhere’sothat takesmetoOctober 2024 and I’m thinking by thetimeIgetthere,I’llbe nearly64, ifI can do something here in arolethattakes twoor three days, that’smyideal plangoingforward.” No doubt it willbe welldeserved but inthe meantimethere’s the small matter of his 30thanniversaryasAssay Master to consideraswellas the office’s 250thanniversary.It’s tur ning intoquite ayear of celebration.

I’dbrought mydadalongforlunch andwe were bothimpressed not just by the look oftheplace but by the atmospheretoo, whichwaswelcoming. It had that‘proper pub’ feelbut withall the moder ntouchesyou’dwant.

We were happy to sit inthe light-filled dining areaand took oneofthe booth seatsbeforeperusingthefoodanddrinks menus Asyou’d expectfromashowcase for theirbeers, there’sacomprehensive rangeofTimothy Taylor’savailable, both on draught andin bottles. If you’renew totheirbeers, orjustfancy trying something different, the beer flights provide a g reatoption.Pricedat just£4, youcan choose aselectionofthree Timothy Taylor’sbeers (fromachoiceof seven), whichare servedinthreethird of a pintglassesandbroughtto your table in awoodenpaddle.I’d opted for Landlord,Boltmakerand HopicalStorm, asrecommendedby Timand enjoyedall ofthem, although Boltmakerwas probablymy favourite. As the designated

driver, mydad enjoyeda Pepsi (£2.40).

Thefoodmenu far exceeds the drinks offering and features everythingfrom small plates (threefor £15),pubclassics, flatbreads, pizzaandsandwiches, somethingto satisfy everyappetite.

We star tedwithacoupleof small plates.Truffledchestnut mushrooms on toastedsourdoughwithrocket andherb oil (£6 50) werepresentedbeautifully and packedwith flavour, with thetruffle adding a touch of luxury.Iopted for wickedwings (£6 50) andchosethe crispy Korean variety-youcan also have salt‘n’ pepper orbuffalo hot saucewhichwere deliciouslycrisp as adver tisedwithmoist chicken atthe centre. A tangysauceprovideda finishingtouch

There were some realstand-out dishes onthePub Classics par tofthe menu, none more sothantheTaylor’s Chip Shop steak pudding(£12.50) which came with properchip shop chipsand mushy peas.It hadareal nostalg iclook

about it but was fantastic, stuffedwith tenderbeef which pairedso wellwith the suet crust.I wasalittle jealous. Itookamoder n routeformain course andchosetheBurritooftheDay (£11.50), which onthis occasion was BBQpork.Thishear tydishwasserved as twogeneroushalves of awarm tor tilla stuffedwith thepork, refriedbeansand cheese.Littlepots ofguacamole, soured creamandsalsacameonthe side aswell asabasketof skin-onfries.It wasa good-sized por tionthat delivered on flavouraswellas presentation. Desser ts perhaps felt like an extravagancetoofar-it was only lunchtime afterall-but we couldn ’t resist.Poulter’ssticky toffeepudding, made with Timothy Taylor’s Poulter’s por terandservedwithsaltedcaramelice creamand toffee sauce(£6 50) definitely fellintothe indulgent category andwasrichandsweet.MyEtonMess (£6 50), acombinationof mixedberries, crunchymeringue, fruit coulisand chantillycream providedamuchlighter alter native.

It wasasweet andsatisfyingend to a meal that showed thatTimothy Taylor’s are about muchmorethan beer.Taylor’s ontheGreen definitely ticksall the boxes asbeing ashowcasefor theirrange but demonstrates their familyvaluetoo. It’s warm, welcoming anda g reat spaceto while awayan hour or two.

Instilling the love of literacy from the roots of Chapter House

KAREN KILKENNY, HEAD OF CHAPTER HOUSE SCHOOL AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE TALKS THROUGH THE INNOVATIVE WAYS IN WHICH THEY ENSURE EACH AND EVERY PUPIL ENJOYS READING FROM A YOUNG AGE.

It is important to instil a love of literacy from an early age as literacy skills span far wider than just picking up a book. In Chapter House, literacy and learning is at the heart of everything we do. Time is made every day specifically to enjoy sharing a book together, and each class has a specific time to visit the Chapter House library. This allows them to choose a book they can take home to share with parents and siblings.

One of our most successful, and popular initiatives has been the introduction of our reading dog, Indie, especially with our younger children. It has increased the confidence of reluctant readers by having a non-judgemental audience. The children are purely reading for pleasure with no one pointing out mistakes or questioning them on the text. It is an initiative where we have seen their confidence increase and their reading has become more animated, with more expression – one Year 1 child’s reading age has improved by two years over one term, and they are more curious about reading different texts.

Year 5 students are encouraged to be librarians, recommending books to their

peers, creating displays in the library and using break times to share books with younger pupils. This vital engagement, extends beyond the classroom with regular parent information meetings on reading, sharing new school initiatives and advice on how they can support their child with reading at home.

Chapter House is a vibrant and engaging school that focuses on providing an enabling environment which respects, recognises and tunes into

each unique child; central to our mission of ensuring each child can be ‘the best they can be, with the gifts that they have’.

Children can be either a day student or board with us at Queen Ethelburga’s from Year 3
