Themulti-purposeentertainment spacewasbuiltin1903byRobertBeale andFrankMatchamasa‘Kursaal’,a ‘curehall’,andwasintendedto complementthespatreatmentsthetown becamefamousforandsobelovedbyits richandfamousvisitors.Although renamedattheendoftheFirstWorld War,itremainsEngland’slastsurviving KursaalandisnowGradeIIlisted.

Matchamhadquitethepedigreeasa theatredesigner,havingalreadycompleted theHippodrome,PalladiumandHackney EmpireinLondon.Hisgeniusmanifested inmanywaysattheRoyalHall,notleast theupperbalconywhoseweightwastaken bytwohollowpillarswhich,togetherwith theuseofthebasementareasasaplenum coolingchamber,providedanaturaland efficientairconditioningsystemforthe auditoriumwiththeminimumuseof supportingmachinery–anearlyattemptat energyconservationbytheapplicationof brainpower!

Thebuilding’sdesignwasderivedfrom thegreatballroomsandmusicpavilionsof ImperialEuropealliedwiththetraditions oftheBritishTheatremovementwhich wasthenatitspeak.TheKursaalwasa trulymulti-purposebuilding.Itsinherent flexibilityallowedittobeusedfor concerts,socialgatheringsandtea-dances duringthedayandformusichall, burlesqueandglitteringballsatnight.

Yetanotheringeniousfeature incorporatedbyMatchamwasthe mechanicalsystemforrapidlyclearing theauditoriumseatsintoahiddenstore soastoprovideaflatfloorfordancing orothersocialentertainment.Thisgave thebuildingitsenormousflexibilityand isoneofthefeaturesthatsettheKursaal apartfromothertypesofconventional theatredesignwiththeirrakedandfixed seatingarrangements.

TheRoyalHallisnowownedby HarrogateBoroughCounciland operatedbyHarrogateConvention Centre.Visittodayandyou’llfinda buildingrichinhistory,characterandart. Therearebeautifulpaintings,stained glasswindowsthroughoutandgold,lots ofgold,whichhasgiventhebuildinga rathercuriousmoniker.

“The‘PalaceofGlitteringGold’isa popularvenueforbanquets,conferences, concertsandcommunityevents,”said MichaelConstantine,headofoperations atHarrogateConventionCentre.“Being agemofEdwardianarchitecture,itoffers

aheritagesettingthatenablesorganisers todeliveradifferentexperiencewithin thesamebuildingcomplexofour modernconventionandexhibition facilities,whichisverywellreceivedby bothdelegatesandorganisers.”

Likeanyoldbuildingithasneeded updatingandmodernisingandin September2000majorstructural problemswerefound.Largeareasofthe 100-year-oldconcrete,whichmadeup muchoftheinternalstructure,was foundtobeinahighlyadvancedstateof decay.InNovember2001,further structuralproblemswereidentifiedand thesecausedthebuildingtobe completelyclosedtopublicaccess.The RoyalHallthenremainedcloseduntilits re-openinginApril2008followinga major£10.7millionrestorationproject.

Thesemajorworksledtothecreationof theRoyalHallRestorationTrustwhich wasformedin2001withthepurposeof preservingandrestoringthebuildingfor thebenefitofthepublic.Theregistered charity,whichhasaboardoftentrustees, raised£2.7milliontowardsthe £10.7millionrestorationproject,which wascompletedin2008.HRHPrince Charles,nowKingCharlesIII,re-opened thebuildingandremainspatronofthe trust.Hesaidatthetime:“This magnificentbuildinghasfaithfullyserved thepeopleofHarrogateandthe surroundingdistrictinmanydifferentroles.

“TheinherentversatilityofFrank Matcham’sbrilliantconceptforthis theatrebuildinghasenabledtheRoyal Halltobeusedforarangeofpurposes–fromacinematoaboxingarena,from anareaforexhibitiondisplaystoadance

hall;fromballettotheatreperformances, fromschoolspeechdaystoconcerthall –thelistisalmostendless.Ithastruly justifiedthe‘actoffaithinthefutureof thetown’madebythosefar-sighted localleaderswhoweresoinspirationalin itscreationandwhosawitasavitalpart ofHarrogate’sfutureprosperity.”

Thetouritselfwasveryinformative; therewassomethingtolearnaroundevery

corner,theRoyalHallwasjam-packed withinformation,quiteliterally,fromthe floortotheceilingandeverythinginbetween.Angelaprovidedthegroupwith interestingandinsightfulinformationthat wasspecifictoeverydifferentpartofthe hall–rightdowntothedoorhandle fittings.Eachnewfactandroomofthe hallhadsomethingcompletelynewto offerandnewtouncover.

Itreallyisastonishinghowspectacular thisplaceis,fromthestunningstained glasswindowstothelightfixtures imitatingmagnoliasinflowerandthe mutedgreencanopiestowardstheback ofthebuilding.It’sawonderfulexample ofEdwardianarchitectureandan importantpartofHarrogate’spast, presentandfuture.

Asweheadintoautumnit’sharvest timeformuchofthefruitand vegetablesinthekitchengarden.Withthewarm weatherlotsofourproducehasripenedearlierthanusual andatthetimeofwriting(inlateAugust)thingslikepeas andbeanshavealreadypeaked.Withsuchsustaineddry weatherkeepingeverythingwateredisstillkeepingusbusy, especiallyforanynewplantswithshallowroots.

Despitethechallengesofthedry summer,it’sbeenagoodyearoverallinthe kitchengardenandthewarmthhassuited thingsliketomatoeswhichhavebeenmuch happieroutsidethaninside,andthe greenhouse.Othernon-nativecropssuchas thepotatobean, Apiosamericana,normally mightnotdothatwellupherearegrowing onreallywellandseemtobethriving.

Intermsofothermoreunusualplantswe’vegota horseradishtree(Moringaolifera),whichisnativetoIndiabut hasbeendoingwellhereinYorkshire.It’sgotflowersand reallylongbeansonit.Youcanusetherootincookingand alsotheedibleleavescanbeusedtomaketeawhichwe’ve beendoinghere.It’saplantwithlotsof nutritionalbenefitsaswellasbeinguseful inthekitchen.

It’sbeenagoodfruityearingeneral, probablythebestwe’vehadforalong time.We’vehadagreatcropfromallour currants,gooseberriesand raspberries.We’vealsohadsomebeautiful nectarineswhichhavebeengrownoutside anddidwellinthewarmweather.Aswellashavingfruit andvegetablesfromallovertheworldwealsohaveanapple orchardmadeupentirelyofYorkshirevarietiesofapple-18 ofthem.

Allourbrassicassuchasthe NerodeToscana kaleandthe chardareflourishingandwe’llbeharvestingthemwellinto theautumnandwinter.
