THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN SEPTEMBER. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Where possible mulch around plants to help conserve any water that is in the soil. On tubs and containers, a layer of gravel or bark chips not only looks attractive but also helps retain precious water from evaporating. Standing containers in saucers keeps the soil moister and means using less water 2. If you are going away and asking your friends or neighbours to water for you, take all moveable tubs and baskets to the shadiest part of the garden, that is still accessible to a water supply, and group them all together quite thickly. This makes it easier for the waterer to keep everything watered and also makes a micro climate that is more humid so keeping the plants happier. 3. In the greenhouse keep the paths and benches damped down to raise humidity, pleasing the plants and also helping keep red spider mite in check as these pests thrive in hot dry situations. 4. August is the time that vine weevil hatch out and now is the best time to treat pots and susceptible plants with nematodes to stop lava attacking your plant roots. 5. When rambling roses have finished, prune out the flowered stems to encourage the new young shoots to develop for next year’s show and feed with a high potash rose food to encourage more flowers. 6. Continue to liquid feed all flowering tubs and baskets, dead head regularly and some plants such as lobelia can be cut back to produce a second flush of flowers. 7. Sow a few rows of salad crops in containers or small areas in the garden to give you a crop in September /October. Radishes, spinach, lambs lettuce will all take a light frost and make viable autumn salad additions. 8. Look out for autumn flowering bulbs arriving in the garden centres, saffron crocus, colchicums and various species should be planted as soon as you see them to give them chance to root properly to give you a much longer flowering period. 9. Turn your compost heap at the end of the month to let it settle down for the autumn and you will not disturb any animals, such as grass snakes and slow worms who make their home in the compost heap over the winter. 10. Finally sit back and relax a bit, August is for reflecting on your gardening triumphs and disasters and use an RHS garden journal to record your note so you do not forget when you set out again in the spring.

Pieces like a Chesterfield sofa, a Windsor chair or a Childs Rocking Horse, for example. They are items that were built to last and have stood the test of time but, like many things, occasionally, they may need a bit of TLC to keep them pristine and prolong their life even further. Coopers of Ilkley Ltd is a wellestablished family-run business, founded in 1910, offering a range of antique and modern furniture restoration and repair services including French polishing, cabinet making, clock repairs, picture and painting restoration, re-caning and upholstering. “Our small team of skilled craftsmen are adept at carrying out jobs of all scales and sizes,” said owner Brenda Lunt. “We are members of LAPADA, The Guild of Master Craftsmen, and the FSB and we pride ourselves on our commitment to provide a professional and speedy service at all times, whilst maintaining the highest quality of work. “Our goal is to meet and exceed the expectations of all of our customers, both domestic and commercial. Antique restoration and repair are at the heart of what they do, incorporating furniture polishing, reupholstering, leather repairs, marquetry, Boulle, carving, and gilding. In addition to this, they can make individual pieces to your exact requirements. For example, a bookcase, an extra dining chair, a cabinet, using old timber and quality fittings, and much more. “Whether you have ancestral furniture that you wish to restore or you need reupholstering services, we can provide you with services of the highest standard in all circumstances,” added Brenda. “You can also approach us for a complete restoration service in cases of flood and fire damage.”

rom our television screens to the stage, soap actress Gaynor Faye will be starring in the stage adaptation of Peter James’s best-selling crime novel Looking Good Dead. Having worked with the producer, Josh Andrews in the past, he had asked her whether she would be interested in starring in the play. She told me that she was excited by this opportunity. “So firstly, I got involved in the play as I’d done Band of Gold with Josh Andrews – the producer last year, before the pandemic, and I did a tour of that. I’ve known Josh for quite a while now. The Looking Good Dead play came about and there was a character who he thought was the perfect fit for me, so he asked me to read it and see if I liked it. “I’ve seen a few of Peter James’s West End adaptations beforehand and I thought they were done really, really well. When I read the script, I thought ‘oo actually, the character of Kellie Bryce is really good’ and the play’s really good. “Kellie’s an alcoholic, so I don’t relate to that, she cleans all the time, and I don’t, but she kind of looks like me haha, so I don’t relate to her, but I know people like her, and I love a crime thriller. I’ve never done a crime thriller, so it’s a first.” Looking Good Dead features Kellie’s husband, Tom Bryce, played by EastEnders’s actor Adam Woodyatt, perhaps best know for portraying Ian Beale in EastEnders. “Adam’s lovely. I’ve never worked with him before. In soap circles you often bump into, or meet actors from other soaps, but I’d never even met him! We get on really well actually, he’s funny, he’s warm, he’s a real team player which obviously comes from being in EastEnders, and he’s just a joy to work with. He’s like a puppy dog – so excitable all of the time; he gets so excited about going on stage. When I was really nervous, he’d go ‘ohh come on Gaynor, we’ll have a great time!’ He really is such a great person to be around, and I miss him! I’ve had a week off and I really do miss him.”
F
Gaynor explained to me that the play has an exciting but dark storyline with Tom becoming a witness to a violent murder, and by reporting it to the police gets himself, and his family in danger. “With it being a crime thriller, it’s got lots of twists and turns; it has got a lot of gasp moments. It’s about a slightly dysfunctional family. Kellie and Tom have two sons, Max, and Joe. One day, Tom picks up a memory stick that he finds of a train, and everything goes wrong from there.” “My favourite scene would have to be the opening scene; it’s quite dynamic – it’s a three-way, we have myself, Tom and Max, and we have a family argument, it’s fast-paced, and I love that.” Gaynor told me that she’s mostly looking forward to getting back to theatre to be able to perform live again after the pandemic. “I love hearing the audience gasp when they work out who did what, and
who’s involved and who the baddies and the goodies are. I love working with the cast, and the crew are brilliant, we have a lot of fun even though it’s serious, but does have a lot of humour within it, we all get on and have a good laugh.” Looking Good Dead will tour to Leeds in September, not only is this exciting for the people of Leeds, but Gaynor says that it’ll be the most special one for her. “I’m Leeds born and bred. When you’re working, you very rarely get to perform in your own home town, but I’ve been lucky as I’ve performed at the Grand Theatre a few times, but I just absolutely love it. It’s one of the first places I ever performed when I was a kid; I did a ballet show when I was about eight and then I’ve been on and done other things in the past – I know people at the Grand Theatre, and have done for years, so it’s always wonderful to play at your hometown, but it’s especially wonderful to play at the Grand Theatre.” So, what’s next for Gaynor? “You know what, I really don’t know to be honest. With the situation we are in, very few things are getting told they can 100 per cent go ahead, so it’s a very big risk to plan ahead in advance in this job. I’m very happy to just play it by ear, and when it comes, it comes. I’m very much in mind that when I’m in work, I’m not looking for my next job; I like to really enjoy the role that I’m in. When it gets towards then end of the tour, I will want to find out what my next job is, of course, but right now I’m happy focusing on this role and job.” There is already a buzz in Leeds and the rest of Yorkshire about Looking Good Dead coming to the Grand Theatre in Leeds, and having a Leeds born and bred actress, Gaynor Faye starring in it is a bonus for any Emmerdale and Coronation Street lovers. Looking Good Dead will be at the Grand Theatre in Leeds this September.Tickets are on sale on the Leeds Heritage Theatres website now – https://leedsheritagetheatres.com Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 15

It’s here, in the middle of the Atlantic, with time on their hands, that the concept behind the festival first emerged. WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?
JORDAN ODU IS BACK INTO THE SWING OF THINGS – AND MAKING THE MOST OF HIS NEW-FOUND FREEDOM.
s I write this from my poolside sun lounger with a round of cocktails on order, I’ll admit that whilst the UK post-lockdown excitement has been fun, you really can’t rely on the great British summer. I need some rays and a vitamin D boost. It also happened to be my birthday a few weeks back, as if I needed another reason to jump on a plane for warmer climes. Pure bliss. I celebrated back in Leeds on the Issho Harvey terrace with friends and Nichols family, and what a night that turned out to be. The cocktails and food we’re next level and it was so good to see all my nearest and dearest together after such a long time. The atmosphere across the city was amazing, to the point I almost forgot about the past 18 months. The uber Monday morning hangover was more than worth it, even if they do seem to get more brutal with every passing year. I also checked out the Fourth Floor Brasserie’s exceptionally good summer bottomless menu, which has got something tasty for all palates. You can indulge in delicious food and drink, with my fave being the pan-fried hake with a poached hens egg, potato cake in a caviar sauce and of course, free flowing Harvey Nichols Prosecco. Perfect for a boujee catch up with friends. August as a whole has been something of a whirlwind for me socially, and one of the highlights was hosting the first Pink Gorilla launch party in almost two years. Salt Brewery unveiled their brandnew bar Salt on East Parade with their own range of award-winning beers and eight different cocktails on tap. Needless to say, the evening went off with guests particularly impressed by the bar’s innovative cocktails on draught.

can’t say enough how good it is to see people come together with no restrictions. We also helped arrange the launch of LNER’s fabulous new VIP lounge at York Station, allowing First Class tickets holders to get the red carpet treatment as they unwind before heading on summer staycations. The atmosphere was priceless and I couldn’t have been happier to be back in Elland Road with thousands of fans. With summer drawing to a close and the other dreaded ‘C’ word fast approaching, those looking to get into pre-party season shape should check out Barrecore. Landing in Leeds this month, the new Mustard Wharf studio will specialise in what has been recognised as one of the world’s fastest and safest body transformation workouts. Endorsed by the likes of Rita Ora, Claudia Schiffer and Poppy Delevingne to name just three, it’s poised to be the talk on the Leeds fitness scene. I’ll be trying it out for myself post-holiday, so watch this space for my thoughts. But for now, it’s time for cocktail number two people, so I’m out of here until next time. See you soon. Tech opens a window directly into people’s ‘real’ daily lives, curated fiction as they may or may not be. Every intimate thought and action can be captured; accessible and shareable, more than ever before. Now we see everyone’s life through a screen, what impact does this have on our behaviour, and on civilisation itself?
Who am I, again? With Sir Lenny Henry CBE 25 September, 7pm Leeds Corn Exchange Sir Lenny Henry released his memoir, charting his life in TV and comedy, “Who am I, again?” in 2019. Find your inner beauty GET A HANDLE ON HANDBAG HYGIENE WITH LEEDS ENTREPRENEUR ISABELLA CAVALLI. id you know that handbags and purses carry more bacteria than the average toilet? It’s perhaps surprising, and not very nice to think about, but there are ways to keep your clutch or tote sanitary and is something Leeds-based entrepreneur Isabella Cavalli is keen to promote with her range of handbags with interchangeable linings. Lucy James talked to the creative director and founder of Satya || RO to find out more about the business and the woman behind the genius idea.

Tell us about yourself?
I was born in Poland, but I moved to the UK when I was 20 years old; I was meant to come here for three months only, and here I am 16 years later! I have always loved fashion and beauty; I dreamed of having my own fashion business when I was a child, I wanted to have a mini-Harvey Nichols store. I have a diploma in fashion and a BA from Leeds University, and throughout my adult career I have worked in management in the fashion and beauty
made in leeds

industry. I have also worked as a makeup artist where I worked with women on a daily basis. I learnt a lot about their lifestyle and habits which then ultimately lead me to think about a product-based business that will “solve a problem” to make our lives easier. Tell us about your business.
Satya || RO is a Leeds-based femaleowned business and is the only brand globally that is offering handbags with replaceable inner linings. Satya || RO

stands for craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation. We create sustainable luxury handbags with innovative replaceable inner linings to make your life easier. We contribute to the luxury accessories market by incorporating technology with a purpose. We promote slow fashion and sustainability; we only have one planet, and we should look after it. How would you describe your collections?
I would describe Satya || RO’s first collection as refreshed classics adored by women which are now made better with replaceable inner linings; it’s timeless and innovative. Women love the idea of finally being able to change the lining in their bags, we are in the 21st century, we should be looking at ways to improve how we wear fashion and use sustainable fashion. Our revolutionary replaceable linings are very easy to change and wash, they are water resistant too. What’s even more exciting is that this feature lets you hide
your valuables under the lining when you are on a night out or when you’re travelling. The collections contain Timeless Hobo bags and our best-selling speedy Tote bag. We also have matching pouch bags to complement the set! They’re super elegant, fierce, and stylish pieces that every woman needs in her wardrobe. The Satya || RO duffle bag sold out after it was published in British Vogue. It’s now back in stock! Our second limited collection sold out before it was even launched. I posted a picture on Instagram to see how our followers would react, and all of them sold out within hours. The new Handbags with a Twist collection is still available to purchase on our website; the handbags are lightweight, soft in touch and super stylish. The bags come in the colours, white, green, nude, brown and black. Everyone loves Handbags with a Twist. Boredom is boring! What is your most popular product?
Our most popular product is the speedy
black Tote bag. It’s elegant and sexy and comes with a removable shoulder strap. The bag is timeless. Women love this bag. With our Tote, they can easily transform their day-to-day look to a business look by taking off the shoulder strap. Our Tote can also be worn as a cross body bag to spice up your school run. Do you have a favourite product?
Of course, I do! I am absolutely in love with all of my pieces. The black Tote is my favourite, I very often wear it as a cross body bag simply because most of the time I am in a hurry, and I want to get things done easily. I am also a mum to a three-year-old Akita called Rocky and it’s very handy when I walk him as I can still look stylish. I also love it with the red lining. I use my linings for different activities. Red is for when I walk Rocky because I always take treats

for him, and water etc, so I want to use a separate lining, and I use the pink lining when I go to work. Another product that I love so much is our Duffle bag. Our Duffle bag can be used for going to the gym, as a maternity bag, travel bag or an everyday bag. I travel with Rocky very often and when I don’t want to be taking too much with me, only what’s needed, the Duffle bag allows me to keep my things separate, clean and safe too. We have three compartments in our Duffle bag, the main big compartment has a secret pocket for your valuables, a shoe compartment for your muddy, or sweaty shoes and a compartment for your wet clothes, or rubbish. All of those compartments come with replaceable inner linings made of water-resistant material which doesn’t absorb, smell, or sweat. If you love going to the gym, or travelling as much as I do, you must get it. What has been your biggest achievement so far?
The biggest and best achievement for me 50 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
was never giving up on my dream, despite everything dragging me down at some point, I held on to the vision and I never lost faith in myself. Also, launching a business during a global pandemic was frightening, let me tell you. But so far, we have managed to get into department stores after less than two months on the market, and we have been published in British Vogue and other great magazines and newspapers. The fact that Satya || RO sold out of stock in such a short time is what I think of as the biggest achievement ever. What is the fashion scene like in Leeds?
I love the Leeds fashion scene; I think Leeds women are brave trend-setters. They’re very savvy. They love innovation, and they love to have unique fashion which sets them apart from the crowd. From working with women for so long, I know how important it is to get the most out of the items that you invest in, as well as to be able to enjoy them and wear them with pride.
We receive feedback from our customers on how our handbags make them feel, they say they feel proud wearing Satya || RO handbags, simply because we are different, and we are the trend setters in the fashion accessories world right now. Where can we buy your products?
You can buy our handbags on our social media platforms, our website at: www.satya-and-ro.com and in Browns department stores. Our customers are global. We sell Satya || RO to Europe, the United States and Asia.

EATING OUT
Street food and more HIT THE SPICE TRAIL AT STREET LANE NEWCOMER, AANYA, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. f you want to add a touch of theatre to your meal at Aanya – and a bit of fun – I suggest trying the Gol Gappa Chaat. These crispy wheat puffs, very much like mini puris, were like little bites of heaven. Filled with potatoes, chickpeas and garnished with chutneys they were served with a ‘shot’ (hints of mint and tamarind) intended to be poured into the little puris before being eaten whole. Talk about a flavour explosion. They were undeniably the star of a very good meal at the newly-opened Aanya on Street Lane. The Gol Gappa are also owner Sharan Matharu’s personal favourite – “they’re absolutely delicious,” she told us. She wasn’t wrong. Aanya, named after Sharan’s daughter, opened in June and serves authentic Indian and contemporary street food. You’ll find a menu with many dishes that may sound unfamiliar – there’s a big southern Indian influence – but that still packs that huge punch of flavour into them. “My mother was born in Colaba, Mumbai,” said Sharan. “And I spent many summers there throughout my childhood. India truly is a special, magical place to my family and I feel so humble every time I travel back there. These experiences and my love of India’s rich and vibrant history is why we opened Aanya restaurant. “Our restaurant idea was born from a lifetime of travelling through all of India’s vibrant regions, each offering their own amazing stories and inspirational flavours. We have worked tirelessly with our chefs to perfect our exquisite menu and take great pride and pleasure in serving you some of the finest Indian dishes in the world.” There’s still a feeling of newness about Aanya, from the clean, contemporary decor to the presentation to the actual menu, which Sharan explained will evolve and expand over time.

mango chutney, lime pickle, raita and a beetroot and onion pickle. Add in glasses of Kingfisher beer (£3.95) and it was the perfect start. Next up, alongside the Gol Gappa Chaat (£5.75), we tucked into more familiar Laziz Lamb Chops (£6.95). Sliced from the rack, these had been

marinated overnight with ginger, garlic, spices and cooked in a tandoor, and were some of the most tender chops I’ve ever tasted, just delicious. For mains we took advice from Sharan and her team and opted for one of the specials – Bhindi Gosht (£11.95) and Kadhai Chicken (£10.95). Bhindi Gosht translates as lamb with okra, or lady’s fingers as they are known, and was a medium spicy dish cooked in a slightly thick sauce. Okra is not something I would usually choose but this dish was a triumph, adding texture and flavour to soft lamb and a sauce which was, for me, just on the right side of hot. A kadhai is a traditional Indian wok, a most basic kitchen essential in Indian homes, and housed our equally good chicken dish, which was tossed with mixed peppers and onions in a kadhai masala sauce. More medium in taste, it had a real depth of flavour and was just
begging to be mopped up with our pieces of Rumali Roti (£3.50), a sort of stretchy bread that sits somewhere between a naan and a chapatti. We partnered our dishes, which were all beautifully presented in little copper pots, with a Jafrani Pulao (£2.95), which is Aanya’s take on a pilau rice dish and uses no colourings, is just flavoured with turmeric and saffron. Suitably sated, we had no room for
dessert but it is worth noting that Aanya have a good selection, including traditional Indian dishes Rasmalai, Gulab Jamun and Kulfi, which is available in a variety of flavours. It’s going to be really interesting to see how Aanya evolves in the coming months but as far as starts go, this couldn’t have been better. It’s in a great location opposite the Deer Park pub and just down the road from Roundhay Park with plenty of parking outside. They do takeaway too but, take my word for it, the Gol Gappa Chaat are best eaten fresh in the restaurant. McQueen can be seen in the styling. This creative pursuit took place as part of the Queen’s Academy, a weekend extra-curricular provision, allowing students to realise and extend their ideas and creative passion. Head of Creative Arts, Helen Woodcock, established this provision for students, supported by their drive to express creativity in all opportunities. IN BRIEF
Gateways pupils achieve excellent A Level results Gateways pupils have once again achieved excellent examination results this year with some highlights as follows: · 46% of all results were A* grades · 79% of all grades awarded at A*/A level · 92% of all results were in the coveted A* - B range. These fantastic results mean that 95% of pupils have secured their first or second choice university which is in itself incredible in a year where university places are in extremely high demand. Two-thirds (67%) of pupils at Gateways achieved the top grades of three As or more and a fifth (20%) of pupils achieved straight A* grades. Textiles, Further Maths, Geography, History, Latin, Maths, Music, Philosophy and Physics all achieved 100% A*/A grades and 100% of our first cohort of CTECH PE pupils achieved Distinction* grades. As a non-selective school, Gateways is extremely proud to celebrate these impressive results, showing that their small class size model is effective in maximising educational outcomes for pupils. Headmistress Dr Tracy Johnson comments: “We are thrilled that our pupils have achieved such amazing results this year, especially given the disruption that these pupils faced during both years of their A level courses. The pupils, and their teachers, worked exceptionally hard to mitigate the obvious disadvantages that the school closures brought and, in a strange way, our community has become even stronger as we have faced these challenges together. “The pupils now move on to the next phase in their educational journey truly equipped for whatever life might throw at them in the future.” To find out more about Gateways Sixth Form and their A Levels results and subject offerings, visit gatewaysschool.co.uk

Law firm expands offering Established law firm, Levi Solicitors LLP, has invested in its digital offering, meaning that it can now offer legal services to people across the country, rather than only those local to the firm’s four offices. Marketing manager, Ruth Jago said: “The pandemic meant that many businesses, including ours, had to adapt quickly to be able to continue to offer a quality service to our clients, many of whom were unable to come into the office for meetings.” The firm has developed its online services for conveyancing clients in particular. Prospective clients can visit the firm’s website for an instant conveyancing quote. Then, the team can deal with everything from initial instructions to completion online, over the telephone or by post where that suits the client best. “Of course, we still welcome clients in for face to face meetings!” said Ruth.
