elcome to the September edition of Northside magazine. If you dream of following in a princess’s footsteps, on the cover you’ll see stunning Goldsborough Hall, the former residence of HRH Princess Mary, the Queen’s aunt. Ideally located just outside Harrogate, it boasts a 400-year-old Jacobean oakpanelled Library, an elegant 18thcentury Drawing Room and a bright and airy Orangery, perfect for all wedding celebrations. The hall is one of many stunning locations throughout the region; we look at some of the best as well as suppliers and businesses that can make your day extra special. Eating out is back on the agenda – we head to Oakwood and Chapel Allerton in Leeds to sample two very different but well-liked restaurants – and also look at up to date fashion, beauty and stylish additions for the home and garden. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we’ll see you next month.

Update on services - at Spire Leeds Hospital March 2020 saw the start of our national Covid-19 lockdown and a postponement of many hospital services. Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay became part of the national NHS pandemic response team set up between NHS England and independent providers across the country to help in the fight against Covid and to continue providing urgent medical and surgical care for patients from across our region. Use of new technologies to support patient care during Covid It soon became clear that technology could assist hospitals in continuing much-needed patient care during Covid and healthcare providers accelerated their plans to implement new technology. Spire was no exception and the hospital group launched a national “Spire Zoom package” for consultants to use to enable them to run consultations for their patients on a “virtual” basis (via a phone call or a video call) for consultations. • More than 100 consultant specialists are now offering “Virtual” patient consultations. • Up until August, over 2000 virtual consultations have now taken place.

Re-opening of NHS and private out-patient and in-patient services at Spire Leeds Hospital In July, private out-patient services for both adults and children were slowly allowed to re-start and the hospital team have been working closely with the NHS and with consultants to recommence private surgical services whilst still providing a substantial amount of capacity for continued NHS patient services. • Face to face consultations can now be offered in addition to virtual consultations to provide a more flexible service for patients. • Clinics have been re-instated across most medical services and over 600 patients a week are now having face to face appointments once again.
Private GP clinics – face to face or “Virtual “ appointments available Out-patient, face to face services include: • Advice, support and treatment • 30 minute appointments at £99 • Appointments can be arranged within 3 days • Access to Spire’s team of over 100 specialist consultants and full range of on-site tests and scans • Book your appointment on-line or speak to our Patient Advisor Team

Looking for a change in lifestyle? Why your outside space might hold the answer…
BY SARAH MURCH, A LANDSCAPE DESIGNER AND NATURAL POOL SPECIALIST, WHO, TOGETHER WITH HER HUSBAND WILL, ARE THE OWNERS/FOUNDERS OF ELLICAR GARDENS AT GRINGLEY ON THE HILL, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. itting on the deck beside our natural pool with a backdrop of birdsong and bubbling water, already I feel relaxed after a long, busy day. A gentle breeze sends ripples of light across the pool’s surface, a charm of goldfinch splash beside the jetty, and a starling flies down to the beach for a drink. I’ve appreciated our gardens and natural pool more than ever this year – they’ve seen me through the toughest of times. I realise I’m fortunate to enjoy acres of space, but as a landscape designer, I know any outside space can be turned into the perfect place to kickstart and enjoy that longed-for lifestyle.
S
Breathe new life into your outside space Almost everyone wants to enjoy more outdoor living, and many are opting for staycations. There’s a trend for taking the workplace outside too, with garden offices. So your garden needs to do more than look beautiful. That’s why my landscape designs are functional too and fit with your way of living. Thoughtful design can breathe new life into your outside space to give you the lifestyle you’ve been looking for. And if you want to truly embrace a different pace of life, it might be time to think about investing in a natural pool too.
Water is the perfect backdrop to year-round outdoor living Still reflective waters, mesmerising ripples and gentle waves that soothe the soul. The perfect setting for picnics, parties, family get-togethers, and glorious afternoon gatherings with friends. 16 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
A natural pool becomes the focus of family life and blends into your garden
An antidote to modern life Imagine sliding into crystal clear, chemical-free water and feeling it gently wash away the day’s stress.Your mood lifts, you’re relaxed and rejuvenated ready to enjoy the remains of the day. Or simply sit. Watch the wildlife and listen to the birdsong. Feel your shoulders loosen and thoughts slow as you unwind beside the water.
Get closer to nature Swallows dip and dragonflies dart alongside you – it’s like wild swimming in your own garden. Watch bats hunting over the water while you soak up the last rays of sunlight. See the children splash with excitement as they don their masks and snorkels to discover the incredible giant aquarium of pond life that lives hidden away amongst the water plants.
Did you know? You can enjoy the benefits of chemical-free swimming without plants. While natural pools are filtered and purified by water plants, living pools are plant-free yet still with zero chemicals. They can be indoors or outside and heated to 30ºC. hinking about a natural pool prompts many questions! Here are some of the most frequently asked – if your question isn’t answered, I’m always happy to have a chat.
T
Do I need a big garden to have a natural pool?
Not at all. They start from 40m2 and go up to swimming lake size. If space is at a premium, hybrid pools are ideal. They combine the filtration of a living pool with the beauty of water plants, so you have maximum space for swimming. Can I have a natural pool if I live in a listed property?
Absolutely, the ecological benefits often make it easier to get planning permission over a conventional pool. Plus, no unsightly blue rectangle! A natural pool blends seamlessly into your garden.

I prefer a contemporary style, is that possible?
Yes! Whether you want a naturalistic retreat, a contemporary pool or a fussfree plunge pool, we specialise in designing a pool to fit your taste and lifestyle. Are natural pools expensive to run?
Definitely not. The water warms up quickly with natural solar gain. That means no heating costs, low energy requirements and a longer swimming season. They’re low maintenance and easy to look after too, only requiring a professional service once a year. How warm is the water?
The water heats up quickly in spring,

I can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for the likes of Harvey Nichols, Zaap Thai, and Chophaus to name just three. Watch this space. Of course, something has got to give when hitting the local restaurant so hard, which gave me the perfect excuse to drop into the recently opened North Studio for a dose of boot camp and yoga. The studio has a friendly neighbourhood vibe to it that allows you to forgive them for working you so hard. I loved it so much, I treated myself to a yoga bundle and will be back to get my bend on. I was also lucky enough to attend a socially distanced showcase for the brilliant Airstream Events recently, who provide everything you need to stage your own private party or mini-festival. Their sound system has been hired by the likes of the Chemical Brothers and so block-rocking beats are guaranteed. With the explosion of private garden parties in wake of the pandemic, I predict big things for Jacob and his team in the coming months. The principles of preparing for a whole school reopening THE NEW PRINCIPAL OF QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S TALKS ABOUT PLANNING FOR A SEPTEMBER REOPENING, FOR ALL AGE GROUPS, AND HIS VISION FOR THE COLLEGIATE. tarting the next academic year as the new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate will be a very different experience to that which I had envisioned when I was first appointed. Having been in education over 30 years, 17 of these as the head of large UK and international independent schools, I’ve seen some change in practice. The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September – as we’ve heard said many times already –are unprecedented. With key worker and Forces boarding students staying on campus throughout lockdown, and a successful welcoming of our Reception,Year 1 and Year 6 cohort in early June, we now have plenty of experience of operating in a controlled lockdown. QE has complied with, and gone beyond, the measures required by government and we have committed ourselves to the BSA School Safe Charter. We are using this experience to ensure we have adaptable plans in place, as we welcome students back at the start of term. We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love. Our location is ideal. Queen Ethelburga’s benefits from a highly secure, rural campus, set in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside. It is looking increasingly likely that

school will be reopening in September without the social distance restrictions we have now, however, we are still planning to bring our boarders back two weeks earlier in August, so that we can offer quarantine if necessary, but also to offer a curriculum preparation programme for the year ahead. Our priorities for the next year build on QE’s success story to date. We know
Collegiate Principal Jeff Smith
that the key to academic excellence is the consistency in quality of teaching, therefore this will always be the focus for the Collegiate. Continuous improvement is also key. We will be reflecting on everything we do and will always seek feedback from our students, parents and teachers so that we understand our community needs and find ways to meet them. We will continue to find ways to broaden and improve the curriculum and enrichment opportunities we offer, and extend students learning beyond the restraints of the classroom. We will use our recent online teaching and learning experience to develop our IT strategy, taking the opportunity to develop elearning in an impactful way. Through our academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes, we will continue to develop the personal qualities of our students, such as leadership, resilience, critical thinking and responsibility. As always, we will prioritise the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of all our students and staff. To find out more about QE, visit www.qe.org.

Just three months into her postgraduate finance role, the budding entrepreneur decided to quit and pursue her own business. Soon after, North Studio was born. The result is a unique and forwardthinking studio that offers Leeds fitness enthusiasts a refreshing change from the norm. your wedding is truly bespoke. Thoughts are already turning to 2021 and beyond – but the planning starts now. Don’t want to get married in a church? No problem, plenty of venues – including some you haven’t thought of – have civil licenses meaning you can get married and have your reception in the same venue. Not uncommon, granted, but some locations offer that something a little
different. In Yorkshire we are blessed with some truly unique locations that all bring their own individuality to your special day. Take Thwaite Watermill for example. The Leeds City Council-operated venue is nestled on a tiny island by a stunning riverside location; if you really want to impress your guests you can pull up to your special day on a canal boat by the Grade II listed Thwaite House. The island is home to a fully working

watermill which, along with the stunning outbuildings and extensive grounds and garden areas, provides a unique industrial backdrop for some beautiful photography. Voted one of the top wedding venues in Yorkshire, the site is licensed to hold ceremonies in four areas of the island, accommodating 25-70 guests. Whether you’re looking for a small-scale ceremony or a festival style celebration, Thwaite offers a variety of options for your special day. Across the city, located within 1,500 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, mature woodland and rolling parkland, Temple Newsam provides the perfect setting for your special day. It is licensed to hold weddings and civil partnership ceremonies in three stunning rooms of the 500-year-old house; the Great Hall, the Dining Room and the Still Room. The historic site is short distance from Leeds city centre and provides a variety of unique backdrops for photography throughout the historic buildings, lakeside setting and cobbled streets. When it comes to choosing a venue for your celebration, few can beat the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the amazing Yorkshire scenery. Surprise your guests with a steam train adventure and it is sure to live long in the memory. If you’ve dreamed of getting married in a castle, Bolton, a history-rich medieval castle built in 1399, ticks all your fairytale boxes. Mary Queen of Scots spent six months here in 15681569 and it was held for the King during the civil war. The Great Chamber, which retains all of its original charm and

character, will seat up to 120 people and with a log fire burning, creates the perfect atmosphere to celebrate such an important occasion. Another venue with royal ties is Goldsborough Hall, near Knaresborough, which is the former residence of HRH Princess Mary, the Queen’s aunt. Ideally located just outside Harrogate, it boasts a 400-year-old Jacobean oak-panelled Library, an elegant 18th-century Drawing Room and a bright and airy Orangery,

perfect for all wedding celebrations. If you truly want to have your wedding outdoors, Camp Katur is the perfect quirky wedding venue, set within the natural beauty of the 250-acre Camp Hill Estate. Areas include the peaceful Woodland Ceremony Area, set amongst glorious pine trees; Rustic Outer Barn and inner converted Orangery Barn, both of which can be transformed into a magical venue for your special day. Guests can stay in the glamping village which includes safari tents, tipis, bell tents, Hobbit pods, Geo domes, Betty – a retro 1980s caravan – and the UK’s only 360-degree panoramic woodland hide unidome. So far, so impressive. Harrogate’s Sun Pavilion, built in the 1930s and restored in 1998, is another fairytale building and occupies a tranquil corner of the spa town’s Grade II-listed Valley Gardens. A magnificent stained glass dome bathes the classic interior in natural light, creating an enchanting backdrop for celebrations. Lastly, and perhaps more traditional but just as impressive, is the Pheasant at Harome. Hidden away in a quiet corner of the village, it is perfectly suited for intimate weddings of 12-80 people. In good weather, the Terrace is the ideal setting for the ceremony or a drinks reception and allows guests to mingle while the newlyweds pose in the garden or near the mill pond for romantic wedding photographs. This is just a taste of what’s on offer throughout the region. Read on and find out why the ‘return of Love Island’ is causing a stir at a popular Harrogate wedding venue. µ Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 29

If you’d like to explore Rudding Park further, you’ll find, amongst other things, top class accommodation and spa. Its 90 bedrooms and suites are contemporary in design and don’t sacrifice on comfort or luxury. You can relax in a rolltop bath with Molton Brown products and if you want to make the most of the outdoors – something we all suddenly seem to crave – opt for a room or suite which offers a terrace or a balcony. Guest receive complimentary access to the indoor swimming pool, juniper log sauna and bucket shower, but why stop there? An upgrade to the Roof Top Spa and Garden (did I mention it’s the first in the UK and has won many awards) is a ‘must’, but more on that later. Whether you are a couple or family – there is a perfect room for you. Family rooms offer privacy and independence, Spa Rooms feature a steam room, sauna or spa bath (of course they do!) so you can enjoy the spa experience in the privacy of your own room, whilst the suites include Roof Top Spa access and their own steam room. Whilst the hotel is well-known and has an enviable reputation, one of the best kept secrets is that Rudding Park also has a number of five-star cottages. Like the hotel, the cottages are beautifully designed, combining style and comfort for those looking for short breaks, or a long let for those looking to relocate. You can also choose to stay in a luxury lodge, complete with hot tub. And just when you think it can’t possibly get any better, the luxury lodge are also available to buy as holiday homes. It’s Roof Top Spa and Garden was the first in the UK and there really is nowhere quite like it – described as a ‘social space offering hydrotherapy and thermal experiences’, you can relax in the warming waters of the hydrotherapy pool, or spa bath, or perhaps we’ll find you in the luxury steam room, panoramic sauna, sunlight therapy room, oxygen pod, cabana or simply relaxing on a lounger on the sun deck. The Escape Zone offers a serene space where guests can choose from an extensive list of treatments whether looking to ease tension with a massage, revitalise their skin with a facial or invigorate the with a body wrap. Guests can also explore the audio, mind, visual and sleep zones. Complimentary skincare workshops are also available and provide a fantastic opportunity to learn tricks of the trade. For those looking to maintain their beauty routine, check out the Nail and Beauty Studio or Westrow Hair Studio at Rudding Park to complete your look from top to toe. To ensure social distancing capacities are reduced – it’s the perfect time to experience Rudding Park Spa. Spa Days and Starlight Spa nights include treatments – or you could opt for the Roof Top Spa Experiences if you simply want to make the most of this space. If you really want to escape and don’t want to travel too far, Rudding Park has to make the list. Opt for an overnight stay and the Sleeping Beauty Spa Break. Top Tip, book in September and make the most of the Limited Edition Suite Luxury Sleeping Beauty Spa Break where, if you book a Spa Room or Suite, you will also receive a Molton Brown ‘London via Yorkshire’ Rhubarb and Rose Gift Set and a bottle of Taittinger Brut Réserve.

Ready for the chop RICHARD ABBEY VISITS A LEEDS STEAKHOUSE FIT FOR A KING. t’s hard to describe the striking building that contemporary steakhouse and grill Chophaus occupies on the edge of Roundhay Park in Oakwood. All I can say is, it’s very Grand Designs. Nestled amongst the trees, the twostorey timber-framed structure has gorgeous sloping roof curves and is flooded with light thanks to great big windows to the front and side. It definitely has that treehouse vibe but mixed in with a bit of Middle England. In no way cavernous but with high, pointed ceilings and exposed beams, I suddenly felt like I was in some ancient banqueting hall and was half expecting

Henry VIII to stand up, goblet of wine in hand, and shout ‘bring in the boar!’. Thankfully, there were no such declarations from polygamous monarchs, just a busy restaurant filled – and it was full, especially for a midweek evening – with people going about their business, enjoying the atmosphere and food. Award-winning interior designers Nanu Soda have done a cracking job with the interior. The mixture of deep colours, sleek finishes, brushed brass accents and vine wrapped beams has resulted in a dark and seductive interior that perfectly sets the mood. You enter the restaurant on the ground floor, which houses a substantial
bar area, backed by a huge neon ‘Chophaus’ sign, as well as an open kitchen. It’s the perfect spot to sample one of the restaurant’s many cocktails while watching the world go by. Head upstairs and you’ll find a smart restaurant space segmented by the staircase. There’s banquette seating on the rear wall, complemented by wooden furniture and an outdoor terrace which houses a number of impressive ‘cubbies’, perfect for a more intimate celebration. Suitably seated, we perused the menu – Henry VIII would have been suitably impressed. Good quality meat is at the heart of Chophaus’s offering and their premium beef and other prime cuts are

outside, it was incredibly tender and complemented by fantastic beef dripping chips (£4) and garlic butter mushrooms and leeks £6.50). A glass of Dead Man’s Dice malbec (£5.20) was the perfect accompaniment. We finished our meal the way we started it, with deliciously light dishes, on this occasion a zingy mango parfait (£6.50) and a creamy caramel cheesecake (£7), which, like the rest of our food that evening, were both beautifully presented. It was a fitting end to a stand-out meal. The striking Chophaus building certainly captures the imagination, as does the location, and thankfully, it has food to match. If you like steak, their menu is fit for a king.
all sourced locally from the established R&J Meats in Ripon, who have been supplying some of Yorkshire’s best restaurants in 1978. The steak menu, as you’d expect, is impressive. Their beef is dry aged for 28 days and you can choose between cuts of rump, sirloin, ribeye and fillet, all served with watercress and sun-blushed tomato. Chophaus has recently added British wagyu beef to its menu and they do a number of salt aged sharing steaks as well as a good selection of sides – from beef dripping chips to truffle mac and cheese – as well six different sauces – red wine, béarnaise, peppercorn, Chophaus butter, blue cheese and chimichurri. As the designated driver I passed up the opportunity of an early evening cocktail but my wife couldn’t say no to an Aperol Spritz (£8). I started with a light dish of tuna tataki (£9). The tuna, served with avocado, edamame, lotus root, lemongrass and coconut, was cooked just how I like it, seared on the outside and rare in the middle. The Asian flavours really shone through. My wife’s super bowl (£7), a salad of quinoa, pickled beets, feta and pomegranate, ticked all the right boxes for freshness and flavour. We couldn’t resist a steak for main course and decided to share; you can choose between chateaubriand (600g), wing rib (1kg) and tomahawk (1kg). Our knowledgeable waiter explained the differences in the cuts – chateaubriand is taken from the fillet, wing rib from the first three rib bones of the sirloin, and

tomahawk from the fore-rib with the bone left in. Given the tough choice, we opted for the theatre and flavour of the tomahawk (£89 for two people), which arrived perfectly cooked (medium-rare) and sliced on a platter with all its trimmings and the impressive French-trimmed bone. In fact, it was so impressive (the bone), I could have easily taken it home as a trophy. The meat, on the other hand, was superb. Impressively charred on the

An experience to savour THERE WERE BIG SMILES ALL ROUND AFTER A RECENT VISIT TO THIS CHAPEL ALLERTON HOT-SPOT. hapel Allerton is one of those places you can imagine yourself living. A couple of miles north of the city centre, the leafy Leeds suburb retains that quaint village feel despite its close proximity to the hustle and bustle. I first visited Chapel Allerton in the early noughties, funnily enough to visit Sukhothai, my destination for this evening. The Regent Street restaurant is one of those independent venues who has carved out a unique life for themselves outside of the city centre. Head chef and owner Ban Kaewkraikhot ran a successful restaurant in Bangkok before moving to the UK, eventually opening Sukhothai – which is Ban’s birthplace and translates into ‘Dawn of Happiness’ – in 2002. When I visited in 2003, the restaurant was a small, intimate space but underwent a major refurbishment some years later, doubling in size. Ban has since opened restaurants in Headlingley, Harrogate and Leeds city centre. It’s now a full-on Thai experience, complete with curious looking Buddhist stone statues, artwork and elegantly dressed table staff. The decor is ever-so-slightly minimalist, all dark wood furniture contrasted by cream walls, but, coupled with the lively atmosphere it makes for a very cosy and welcoming experience. Sukhothai is highly-regarded and has been named as one of the top ten Thai restaurants in the country by The Times and The Sunday Times and listed in The Good Food Guide seven times. On our arrival we are met with the largest of smiles and introduced to the newest member of staff, a machine that takes your temperature before entering

the dining area. We were immediately put at ease to know that everyone who was dining had met the criteria laid out by the government guidelines during these turbulent times of Covid-19. I had been shielding for some time and this was my first night out – I was please, and perhaps a little relieved, to be able to relax. Now, the menu is huge. With over 175 dishes to choose from we felt that maybe we needed a little direction. It’s divided up into the usual starters, mains and desserts but the traditional Thai way is to bring everything at once. For fear of changing our minds, we all agreed to stop looking once we had made our initial choices. First to the table was laab gai krob (£6.95), a large portion of crispy chicken with a spicy Thai-Isaan dressing that included lime juice, fish sauce, dried chilli, toasted ground rice, mint and shallot. Fresh and fragrant, it was a great way to start. Next up was tom yum soup (£5.95), a traditional hot and spicy Thai soup. With shallots, mushrooms, tomato, lime leaves

and the all-important lemongrass and chilli oil, it sent my temperature soaring – I was tempted to go back and ask for my temperature to be retaken to see what effect the spices had on my body, but there was no way I was leaving, we’d only just started. The massaman kaa gae (£17.95) came from the ‘Chef ’s recommendations’ section of the menu and was described a warming curry sauce with notes of star anise and cinnamon. On this occasion it
was served with a lamb shank; it came exactly as described, a huge shank, rich with succulent lamb, glazing the plate and propped up delicately by the curry accompaniment. I’ve been to culinary heaven many times in my life of extensive travel whilst working at the Home Office and here I was once more, bliss. It was served with a complementary portion of sweet and sticky jasmine rice. Across the table, my dining companion
chose ‘Pearls of Sukhothai’ (£15.50), a dish of steamed jumbo king prawns with garlic and a hot and sour sauce flavoured with lemongrass, lime leaves and coriander. She swears it was amazing, although I passed on the offer of a king prawn as my lamb so huge and plentiful – and utterly delicious. As it was a beautiful warm evening, glasses of cold prosecco were the perfect partner to hot and fragrant dishes. Sukhothai has long been a favourite of Northside magazine and it’s easy to see why. Warm, welcoming and totally authentic, it’s an experience to savour. Sukhothai 8 Regent Street, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, LS7 4PE Tel: 0113 237 0141 sukhothai.co.uk

Block party BRING BAUHAUS DESIGN – AND BALANCE – INTO YOUR HOME. Bauhaus originated as a German school of arts in the early part of the 20th century. Founded by Walter Gropius, the school eventually morphed into its own modern art movement characterised by its unique approach to architecture and design. Today, Bauhaus is renowned for both its unique aesthetic that inventively combines the fine arts with arts and crafts as well as its enduring influence on modern and contemporary art. Architecturally, it is characterised by harmoniously balanced geometric shapes and an emphasis on function. Bauhaus, and its principles, has now made its way into the interior world with geometric shapes, block designs and pops of colour appearing in our homes.

WHAT TO DO IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1.After this strange summer of staying more at home, you should be now in the middle of a bulb buying frenzy for planting in the pots your summer bedding displays are now finishing. Narcissus and daffodils should be widely available, so buy varieties that are early, mid and late spring flowering and plant them together for a succession of flowers. 2. As summer vegetable crops start to go over pull out the host plants and compost them, then prepare the ground for next spring’s sowings. A crop of Aquadulce broad beans can be sown now for an early crop next June. Also a row of sweet peas planted now will over winter and give an earlier display. 3. Be prepared for early frosts by getting some horticultural fleece, which you can use if an overnight temperature dip is forecast. You can just drape it over vulnerable plants and so keep them flowering for longer into the autumn. 4. Get your books out on planting combinations and use them to plant up good colour mixes of spring bulbs in conjunction with your existing herbaceous plants. A really good early spring combo is emerging mahogany coloured Peony shoots coming up through pale yellow dwarf narcissi. 5. Snowdrop bulbs are available to buy in September and plant straight away before they dry out. 6.Your winter baskets should be planted up in September to get them rooted for the winter display. Pansies and Violas are popular but don’t forget foliage plants such as variegated ivy to give colour in really frosty conditions. 7. In October it’s the turn of the tubs and containers which should have more compost to insulate developing root systems. Remember to add four or five layers of bulbs to the compost as you start to plant them up so that you get a continuous display of spring flowers. Large flowered daffodils in the bottom of the pot, next a layer of single early tulips, next a layer of double early tulips, then some dwarf narcissus and finally a layer of crocus near the surface of the compost around the winter bedding planted in the top. 8. In your greenhouse any green tomatoes can be ripened by hanging a ripe banana amongst the trusses. The ethylene gas should start the ripening process in the toms. 9. Why not plant up a container for outside your back door with scented winter plants such as Sarcoccoca (Christmas box) white cheerfulness and fragrant leafed thyme. 10. Finally plant up prepared hyacinths for Christmas displays, they should be individually potted in 9cm pots and left outside in a sheltered place until the roots are fully developed before you plant in bowls. They must be started into growth before the end of September to get flowers for Christmas.

IN BRIEF
Mobile monument arrives in Skipton An iconic 1970s camper van has been transformed into a ‘mobile monument’ to Skipton – in a bid to help get the town back on track after the COVID 19 pandemic. Landlord Andrew Mear – also chairman of Skipton BID – came across the clapped out 1978 VW van while out walking his dog in a field near his home in Norwood Green in June.Within six weeks the rusting relic had been fully restored and wrapped in graphics showing famous landmarks from around the town: it includes the High Corn Mill, its waterwheel, Skipton Castle, High Street House and the famous cobbled streets. The distinctive camper van will now be a regular sight on the High Street on market days (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday) and festival days when the road is now closed to traffic. On other days it will be showcased outside High Corn Mill, one of several historic properties around the town owned by Andrew.

Your perfect home is as individual as you O
ur homes have become even more important to us during the course of this most extraordinary year with many people re-evaluating how they live in their space and how they want it to look and feel. For some people, this is a labour of love that they enjoy. They spend their free time pouring over interiors magazines, scrolling through images on pinterest and Instagram, browsing to find each perfect piece. For others, it is a scary prospect and faced with so much choice, the thought of having to go through this process is enough to make them think that they will simply put up with what they have. Fortunately, for those at either end of this spectrum, Furnish & Fettle is here to help achieve a home that truly reflects the style and tastes of those living there. A family business, owned and run by Glyn & Eleanor Goddard, Furnish & Fettle prides itself on having a flexible design service all delivered by a friendly and talented team of interior designers. “Our team is what makes the Furnish & Fettle experience so special,” says Glyn, “We have a wealth of experience from the senior members of our team and insights into new technologies and ideas from our Intern. Working together, we can offer our clients so much more than any individual ever could.” Furnish & Fettle also have their own Installations Manager, Ian Beal, as part of their team. Ian has worked in the luxury interiors world for over 30 years and supports the team with his technical knowledge to ensure that each project runs smoothly. “Often people think that it’s all about just making homes look beautiful, but it’s just as important that everything works well from a practical point of view as well,” says Eleanor. “Increasingly, our clients are looking at smart home solutions and we are also able to help with that too”. For most people, the journey of working with Furnish & Fettle starts with a visit to one, or even all, of their showrooms based in Harrogate, Wetherby & Pocklington. Each showroom has it’s own unique style and showcases pieces of bespoke upholstered furniture, handmade soft furnishings and a selection of carefully curated occasional furniture and accessories. There is always a warm welcome from the friendly team and advice on hand. However, with the current hygiene restrictions and you would like to browse the extensive pattern library, then it is advisable to book an appointment beforehand as this will ensure that your chosen designer is available to give you their undivided attention. Most of the work that Furnish & Fettle undertakes is bespoke, meaning there is an endless possibility of different options and that as a result, very rarely are two pieces ever the same. Whether it is curtains, blinds, a stylish sofa or comfy footstool, every detail is specified and then handmade to exacting standards. “Often, though, it is the pulling it all together that the client is struggling with before they come to us,” explains Eleanor, “They have an assortment of furniture they may want to keep and a vision for how they want it look. It’s then our job to understand this and to make it happen. Sometimes it can be a challenge – but we are always up for that!”
