Here to help when your family needs legal support
SPECIALIST FAMILY LAW FIRM CROCKETT & CO CELEBRATE THIRTY YEARS IN BUSINESS WITH ACTS OF KINDNESS AND FINGERS CROSSED FOR AWARDS.
This month marks an important milestone for Crockett & Co Solicitors as they celebrate their 30th anniversary at 260 Harehills Lane.
Crockett & Co Solicitors was actually formed in 1991 by Helen Crockett, who was at the time the only sole female practitioner in Leeds, and moved from its Park Square premises to the suburb on 1 September 1993.
As a legal aid solicitors, Helen and her team specialise in all areas of family law, including divorce, wills and probate, child custody, child residency and contact, domestic violence cases, and child protection and adoption cases.
“As a compassionate law firm, we take pride in representing vulnerable clients,” said Helen, who is a member of the Children Panel and Family Law
Advanced Panel. “Here at Crockett & Co we know that choosing and making that first contact with a solicitor can be a daunting and scary prospect. No doubt if you require our services, you are already going through a difficult time in your private and family life.
“We pride ourselves in providing a personal service, so from the moment that you make contact with us, you can be assured that you are in a safe and caring pair of hands. All our team, from our receptionist to our most senior solicitors, are friendly, approachable and down to earth. We aim to provide sensible, honest and jargon-free advice at all times, whilst maintaining the highest level of professionalism and dedication to your case.
“Our team has a wealth of experience
dealing with the most complex of matters that can come before the family court.”
In recognition of the anniversary, Crockett & Co Solicitors will be undertaking ’30 Acts of Kindness’ over the next 12 months, starting with a charity abseil at the Cow and Calf, Ilkey to coincide with their September anniversary. The abseil will be done in conjunction with Leeds Beckett University, with whom the solicitors have strong ties, sponsoring a prize at the recent graduation ceremony and Helen also mentors a law student.
“It’s not something I’ve done before –my daughter has – but it seemed like a good idea at the time,” said Helen. “Hopefully we can raise some money for some deserving local charities and who
knows, it might be fun!”
Helen and her team will be raising money for three charities – LIP (Leeds Involving People), Zarach Beds for All Children, and Leeds Women’s Aid.
Crockett & Co Solicitors is embedded within the Harehills community and work regularly with local charities and community groups as well as local primary schools and operate a drop-in centre at the office on a daily basis. It reinforces their commitment to helping those in need.
“We believe passionately in representing the vulnerable, which is at the heart of what we do,” added Helen. “Our empathy and extensive efforts we make on behalf of clients makes us the best solicitor in Leeds to meet your needs. We are members of Resolution and we are committed to promoting a constructive approach to family issues that consider the needs of the whole family.”
Whilst the 30th anniversary, and the ‘Acts of Kindness’ take centre stage over the coming months, Crockett & Co Solicitors has further reason to celebrate after they were shortlisted for two awards at the upcoming Yorkshire Legal Awards 2023, which will be held at New
Dock Hall on 5 October.
Helen has been nominated for ‘Yorkshire Lawyer of the Year’ for the fifth year in a row but is particularly proud that the practice has been put forward for ‘Law Firm of the Year: Small’ for the first time.
“It’s testament to all the hard work the team put in and we have all our fingers’ crossed,” beamed Helen.
We wish them every success, not just at the awards but in future years to come.

Taste the difference
Casa Lasagna is a new Italian microkitchen which specialises in artisan Lasagne al Forno, crafted using fresh handmade pasta.
Inspiration comes from a wonderful family restaurant in an Alpine village north of Lake Como which has been cooking up a treat for generations. ‘Ristorante Lo Scoiattolo’ is known all over the region for its delicious traditional Italian dishes since being first opened by the owner Alex’s Nonno and Nonna in the 1950s.
“I grew up working here every summer since I was a child,” said Alex. “Having been trained by my uncle, head chef Stefano, until I met his exacting standards, it’s now a real joy to bring a truly authentic experience of Italian cooking to Leeds.”
Using a traditional family recipe that has been handed down, everything is made by hand and done slowly, precisely and properly. Whilst this means there will be limited quantities of meat or vegetarian lasagna available, the restaurant promises there is genuine Italian craftsmanship and inspiration in every slice. They hope you can taste the difference!
Casa Lasagna is now open every Friday evening (5-8.30pm) at 492 Harrogate Road and is proud to support St Gemma’s Hospice with every purchase made.
New road ahead
The Coniston Shooting Ground situated on the Coniston Estate in the heart of the stunning North Yorkshire Dales has been managed by Peter Manley for the last 20 years. The CPSA Premier Plus facility has become one of the best shooting grounds in the UK during this time thanks to Peter and the dedicated team. July 2023 saw Peter retire from his position, and pass the reins of leadership to his colleague, James Ardron who will continue to grow the shooting ground and the team.
In addition to this change in leadership, the Coniston Shooting Ground welcomes new Directors on board; Nick and Jonathan Rumboll, owners of the Land Rover Experience North Yorkshire, currently based on The Broughton Hall Estate, Skipton and operating driving experiences on The Coniston Estate on behalf of The Coniston Hotel, Estate & Spa. This new direction for the facility will see an enhanced offering for customers of the Shooting Ground, Land Rover Experience and leisure and corporate guests of The Coniston Hotel, Estate & Spa.
Major gallery changes
The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds is undertaking one of the largest projects in its 27-year history as it invests in the development of a new temporary exhibition space.
This new 660 square metre space on the fourth floor will replace the Hunting Gallery, which closed at the beginning of July. Once the space is redeveloped, the Royal Armouries will be able to host large-scale international touring exhibitions and rotate the collection with a programme of exciting temporary displays.
As the Royal Armouries celebrates its 700th anniversary in 2023, this is the first step on the organisation’s journey to rethink how best to share the stories of the national collection of arms and armour.
Nick Bannister, Owner and Director of The Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa commented “As we say a fond farewell to Peter Manley and many thanks for Peter’s service since 2003. We know the leadership of the ground is being passed into capable hands; James Ardron has worked closely with Peter for the last 2 years and is a familiar face to our regular guests and members. We’d like to warmly welcome Nick and Jonathan Rumboll to the fold. We very much look forward to working together to drive the business forward and continue to provide exciting, outdoor activities on The Coniston Estate.”

Luxury Airbnb’s at Greenholme Mills now ready to book!
A recent review of an American guest emphasizes exactly what Greenholme Mills are achieving when the Airbnb’s apartments were taken to market.
“We came from NY for a family celebration. The Airbnb was the best I’ve stayed in anywhere worldwide. Incredible brand-new apartment in a renovated wool mill. I really can’t exaggerate how amazing the place, location and service from Gaynor was. Amazing.”
The Airbnb’s are nestled in a serene and picturesque location, offering a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As you step into the well-appointed and tastefully decorated space, you'll instantly feel at home. With top-notch amenities and a thoughtfully designed interior, creating a cosy haven that caters to all your needs. Whether you're a solo traveller seeking tranquillity or a group of friends looking for adventure, our Airbnb’s’ are the perfect base to explore the surrounding attractions to immerse yourself in the local culture offering free parking within the development and ample EV points.
From textiles to tenants
GREENHOLME MILLS HAS BEEN REDEVELOPED FROM A ONCE BUSTLING INDUSTRIAL TEXTILE MILL TO LUXURIOUS MODERN DWELLINGS.
There have been some exceptional mill conversions in Yorkshire, but there is only one that ticks all the boxesGreenholme Mills. There was of course the Salt Mill in Saltaire, where the late Jonathan Silver ignored the people who thought he had absolutely lost the plot when in 1987 he began turning the gargantuan redundant building into a thriving going concern featuring retail, commercial premises, restaurants and the 1853 Gallery featuring David Hockney’s work.
Yorkshire has over 230 vacant or underused historic mills and these proud remainders of our industrial heritage are repurposed, lest they slip into dereliction and are demolished, like many others before them. While it costs at least thirty five percent more to convert a mill than it does to construct newbuild homes, if you do it properly, the bonus is that it is usually far easier to get planning permission to convert a mill into homes than it is to get the go-ahead to build on greenfield land.
That is just one of the reasons why Manchester-based MMR Construction has been targeting mills in God’s Own County. The company, which has a Homes England award and three LABC building excellence awards, is headed by the firm’s managing director Joseph Grunfeld, who works for Canadian investors keen to grow a build-to-rent portfolio in Britain.
MMR began by using permitted development to turn office blocks into rental apartments before Joseph Grunfeld persuaded the investors to change direction. The first mill projects were in central Bradford with another in Tingley.
“I looked at the mistakes other developers made by creating tiny flats with no lobbies, places that became drug dens with a high turnover of tenants and I knew what not to do. These conversions aren’t easy if you do them properly, but
they are something you can get really passionate about,” said Joseph Grunfeld. Empire House is now MMR’s jewel in the crown in Morley Mills in Leeds and has a waiting list of would-be tenants.
The company’s latest and far more ambitious venture is Greenholme Mills, dating from 1790 and was once one of the UK’s largest water-powered textile mills. This prime site sits on the banks of the River Wharfe on the edge of Burley-inWharfedale, near Ilkley, and is a short walk from the village via an underpass and a stones throw from the bypass leading to Ilkley and onto the Dales or down to Leeds.
MMR bought the property with a plan to turn it into homes while retaining as many original features as possible. Another building to the north of the site will host an on-site café with a terrace overlooking the river, open to the public.
MMR has already spent over £24million on the scheme, designed by Bowman Riley, and it now includes 43 luxurious, one, two and three-bedroom rental apartments with balconies. There will also be 13 larger apartments, four townhouses and six semi-detached houses built for sale to come to market towards the end of this year. Another eight river-facing large semi-detached homes with balcony terraces and undercroft parking and one large detached home in excess of 3,000 sq ft with double garage are currently in the planning stage and due to start in the first quarter of 2024.
The bonus for the nearby village is the remediation of a walkway linking to the riverside and beautifully restored buildings. Joseph Grunfeld said: “It has been a challenge and we have gone over schedule and significantly over budget but it has been worthwhile. We have also reclaimed everything
Greenholme Mills

The double-height entrance lobbywe could and used it, including the cobbles and stone setts and no corners have been cut. We have employed the best people, including architects Bowman Riley and a stonemason who is passionate about old buildings. I am passionate about detail so you can see where the money went.”
The double-height entrance lobby certainly lives up to expectation with chandeliers, a wall in marble from Lapicida, and a glass lift from the car park level. The apartments, which all have balconies, have been fitted out with top-end fixtures and fittings and there will be a 24/7 concierge service and security. The original goyt is also due to be transformed into an undrecroft gym and sauna.
There is no doubt that the apartments and amenities are all prime with magnificent finishes and top of the range Smeg appliances with rents ranging from £1,250 pcm up to £3,000 for the three-bedroom penthouse. The beautiful location will also be a huge draw, along with the proximity to the village and its railway station, which are a ten-minute walk away.
However, build to rent flats are generally confined to cities and large towns in Yorkshire, where there is a younger demographic and more transient populations, but so far the top-end rentals in the mill have proved to be a huge success.
Pulse Real Estate is planning an official launch for Greenholme Mills later this year, introducing the landmark development to the media and prospective buyers and tenants wishing to make this elite address their home.
For availability and details for the remainder of the rental apartments at Greenholme Mills please contact Chris on 07503 588135 or email your enquiry to pulselettings@gmail.com
In Bradford Industrial Museum, there is a photograph titled “Lunchtime at Greenholme Mills, Burley-in-Wharfedale” (see the picture below). Dating from 1912 or 1913, the image features in Mark Keighley’s book “Wool City, a history of the Bradford textile industry in the 20th Century”. Had those pictured been told that their workplace would one day be luxury homes, they wouldn’t have believed it.
Greenholme Mills have further diversified and made a few of the larger apartments available as Airbnb/short-term rentals. This adds to the existing portfolio and has become a lucrative venture, attaining multiple five star reviews from clients.
The Airbnb’s are nestled in a serene and picturesque location, offering a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As you step into the wellappointed and tastefully decorated space, you’ll instantly feel at home. THE AWARDS KEEP COMING FOR YOREBRIDGE HOUSE –AND THERE’S MUCH MORE TO COME FROM THE YORKSHIRE DALES HOTEL.
ifteen years after opening its doors, Yorebridge House is still considered a newcomer on the hotel scene, with many guests describing it as a hidden gem of the Yorkshire Dales.
The returning guests, who have reluctantly shared glowing reviews of ‘their’ special place over the years are part to thank for the outstanding reputation Yorebridge House prides itself on – alongside the numerous awards and accolades the hotel has achieved in its short history.
Amongst other incredible accolades –including twice winning Small Hotel of the Year at the Visit Britain Awards –Yorebridge House has most recently won a coveted Catey Award for Hotel of the Year.
The hotel also proudly displays a ‘Best of the Best’ Award with Tripadvisor placing the hotel within the top one per cent of properties worldwide for romance and luxury.
The building, owned by David and Charlotte Reilly, was previously the head office for the National Park Authority. Prior to this it was a school and headmaster’s house. Over 18 months, the Grade II listed Victorian school and headmaster’s house were lovingly renovated and transformed into the fivestar, boutique hotel that stands today.
Yorebridge House boasts 12 individually designed bedrooms with luxury features including monsoon showers, Nespresso coffee machines, Sky
TV and homemade cookies.
Six of the rooms have private, fairy-lit terraces with hot tubs where you can spend the evening enjoying the stars.
The restaurant has maintained three AA rosettes for ten years under the watchful eye of head chef Dan Shotton. Fine dining dishes are served in a relaxed, candlelit environment. The Orangery has views over the Yorkshire Dales countryside and the front of house team are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly.

The ambitions of the owners, managers, and team members at Yorebridge House are infinite. Plans for the future include a riverside spa,
treatments rooms and an alfresco dining area as well as the creation of a 13th bedroom. Converted from an existing Yorkshire Dales Barn, the bedroom will be the first hotel room in Europe to boast endorsement from the prestigious Laurent-Perrier Champagne House. The barn will strengthen the already powerful alliance between the two family-owned businesses which was cemented with the opening of the Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle Tasting Room a couple of years ago.
The tasting room, at the bottom of the original cellar steps, is the ultimate luxury hide-away, boasting wine-clad walls, glistening chandeliers and a bespoke white granite tasting table. The champagne tasting room is open daily for viewings and is available to hire for private dining celebrations and wine tasting events for up to 12 guests.

Relieving stress on the big day
TEN IDEAS FOR FUTURE BRIDES TO RELAX, LET GO, AND ENJOY THEIR WEDDING DAY. BY IRIS ADAMS.
1. Create a self-care routine
Before your wedding, it is useful to develop a few techniques to help you relax and relieve stress. This can be completely tailored to suit your own preferences and may require a few experiments to figure out what you enjoy. A few ideas could be a spa day (at a spa or at home), going for a run or walk, or dipping into a lake for a cold water swim.
2. Make as many lists as you need
If you find yourself up late at night worrying about all the tasks you need to do - don’t wait until the morning to write them down. Getting everything onto paper as soon as it enters your mind is crucial as it stops that nagging feeling. Invest in a good planner and bullet journal to have a designated wedding planning tool.
3. Feel grounded and present with mindfulness and meditation
A myriad of useful mindfulness and meditation tutorials await you on TikTok and YouTube. The power of mindfulness and breathing exercises cannot be underestimated, they are extremely beneficial techniques for clearing your mind and focusing on what is important.
4. Remind yourself of your priorities
As a bride, it is easy to confuse your role and end up feeling like an overworked party planner. You need to make sure your day is everything YOU want it to be instead of stressing about the expectations of others. Those you invite are freeloading off your generosity, there is no need to over-spend or over-indulge on the socalled perfect wedding and focus on the core memories that really matter.
5. Prioritise, prioritise, prioritise
To help keep things in perspective, prioritize the essentials—those things that are super important to make this your dream wedding. Then refer to your “must” list over and over during the planning process, so you don’t go down a spiral of DIY projects you saw on Pinterest or feel the need to constantly upgrade your flower arrangements. Repeatedly checking in with your initial goals will help you stay on track—and on budget.
7. Go on a Date
With your fiance… obviously. Many couples say that the stress of wedding planning can put a strain on their relationship. To combat this, give yourself private time to reconnect and remind yourself of what it’s all about. The way to ensure a stress-free date is to ban the dreaded W word to avoid it turning into another wedding planning session.
8. Don’t Invite Her
When it comes to wedding dress shopping, many brides fear the judgment of some of their closest friends or even their mothers. You only need a little bit of support from people who will back your final decision despite their own fashion tastes and it’s completely up to you who gets to be there. Dress shopping should be fun and stress-free, the wedding day is much more important.
9. Choose the best Maid of Honour
6. Create a Plan B
Create a list of all the potential disaster scenarios that could happen on the wedding day. These could be a change in weather, the dress not fitting, or a fight in the family. Write down anything that could happen and then provide a counterpoint and alternative option to each imaginary scenario. Having a plan B is essential and you will always be able to overcome and adapt to surprise situations.
Maid of Honour duties start from the moment they accept the role. Choose someone who you believe will relieve your stress, be there for you and makes the best out of every situation. She (or he) needs to have positive energy and the confidence to challenge anyone who is causing a problem.
10. Prepare a Wedding Survival Kit
Bring along a pack of bridal essentials like Paracetamol, plasters, hair ties, safety pins, deodorant, mints and other lastminute mini-emergency items that are frequently needed. These can be kept in the Maid of Honour’s bag or by the bathroom sinks.

Dress to impress
Stand out from the crowd
MAKE SURE YOUR WEDDING DAY LOOK REIGNS SUPREME.
s we move into late summer, hopefully there’ll be that final flourish of wedding invites, but what to wear?
I have had more enquiries than I can count, asking for help and advice to get my clients through wedding season. So, let’s start with some tried and tested rules…
Dress the part
For a chic wedding look I recommend either a soft trouser suit or a dress. What do I mean by soft trouser suit? Nothing too formal, think a great pair of high-waisted trousers and a beautifully cut blouse or matching blazer. Both work brilliantly for this kind of event and can double up easily for a re-wear if you are attending an autumn celebration or dressy work event.
Dresses are another chic easy choice as you don’t have to think about matching separates, all you need is a great looking dress and you are good to go. If considering a dress, hemlines are key. Nothing too short, think just above the
knee or anything below. There are some great options pictured here. The green and black are both stunning options available from Morgan Clare, Harrogate, which was voted one of Britain’s best boutiques by Vogue Magazine and the mermaid dress of dreams is by one of my favourite designers Sl’eau. Made from three layers of silk, this iridescent dress cut on the bias, will skim your curves beautifully and the simple demure cut, gives just the right nod to the trending nineties silhouette.
Either way, ensure your outfit has some kind of sleeve; the weather isn’t always kind to us at this time of year and sleeveless can be hard to pull off on a freezing cold terrace.
Consider adding a blazer to your look which can be removed easily if temperatures spike. Wear it on your shoulders rather that putting your arms through the sleeves. It’s a chic way to cover up and it reveals your waistline, giving a more slimline feel to your look.
Shoes
As you’ll be spending some of the day outdoors you need to wear a shoe with a slightly wider heel so you don’t sink into the grass. A fluted, block, stack or wedge heel, all work well. It goes without saying, absolutely no beach flip-flops.
Silky skin
If you are baring any skin, make sure to be moisturised to perfection and as the weather hasn’t been kind to us this summer I would also consider a spray tan. My best advice when booking a spray tan is to go for one with a fourhour developing time. Eight-hour tans can look very orange or, worst still, green on the wrong skin tone. What we are looking for is a nice chic even glow. Want to details on the perfect place to get a spray tan? Send me a message, I’m more than happy to share my little black book of amazing contacts.

AND MAKE LONDON’S NEWEST BOUTIQUE HOTEL YOUR BASE FOR A STAY IN THE CAPITAL.
unique converted Wesleyan chapel in vibrant Camden Town is helping transform the tourism potential of one of London’s up-and-coming boroughs in its first six months since opening.
After a £9million investment and two-year build, The Wesley Camden Town opened to widespread acclaim at the start of the year, and after six months of trading, we can already see the buzz it has brought to uber-trendy Camden Town.
The Wesley Camden Town is the first UK sister property to The Wesley Euston, the popular hotel near Euston Station which was recognised as “the UK’s first ethical hotel” some ten years ago. The Wesley Camden Town property has the same high level of eco-credentials as its big sister at Euston and is already a popular amenity within the local Camden community for visiting friends, relatives and business travellers. Whilst it is ideally situated away from the noise and commotion which many more central, more expensive hotels have, you can still be in Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus or Covent Garden in less than 20 minutes.
And within a few minutes’ walk from The Wesley Camden Town are a wide range of popular attractions and venues to visit including the world-famous Camden Lock Market, Regent’s Canal, Koko and Roundhouse music venues, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and that perennial favourite amongst UK and international travellers to London, Madame Tussauds. The hotel is also expected to be especially popular
with rail travellers from the north and Midlands, and also with travellers using Eurostar out of nearby St Pancras.
The Wesley Camden Town itself is located just off Camden High Street, and less than 400 metres from Mornington Crescent tube (just one stop north of Euston). On the nearby High Street, hotel guests will find a wide selection of restaurants with British and international cuisine, or you may want to head over to sister hotel The Wesley Euston and its vibrant Wesley Bar & Kitchen for dinner and a drink.
The Wesley Camden Town has 38 bedrooms over four floors of the sympathetically designed converted chapel which dates back to 1824, including “Classic”, “Superior” and “Wesley Collection” rooms. Prices vary per night and are from less than £150 for a double en-suite room with Queen size bed, luxury toiletries, smart TV, climate control and free WiFi. There’s a ten per cent discount for direct bookings made on the hotel’s website – www.thewesley.co.uk – and forward bookings for events like London’s Christmas lights, the capital’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and even the recently-announced Taylor Swift concerts next year, are already very strong.

Womens Intimate Health No more dryness
ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM VAGINAL DRYNESS AND IS IT AFFECTING YOUR INTIMATE HEALTH AND SEXUAL PLEASURE?
ESIRIAL® is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel specifically designed to provide hydration and comfort in the vulvo-vaginal area. It is an affordable and safe treatment for women who would like to rejuvenate their vagina and can help to:
• improve vaginal dryness and irritation
• rehydrate and strengthen vaginal tissue
• even out any asymmetries in your labia
• improve the appearance of your vulva
• increase sexual pleasure
Using local anaesthetic, hyaluronic acid is directly injected into the concerned tissues to improve vaginal
dryness/irritation and rehydrate and strengthen the vaginal tissue. Effects of treatment can last up to 12 months.
Miss RS’s DESIRIAL treatment experience
How has having DESIRIAL impacted on your comfort levels for your intimate area?
I was really hopeful that I would feel some improvement. I was very dry ‘down there’ with a lot of scar tissue from surgery in the past, which with the onset of menopause got much worse. A few weeks after the treatment I actually cried when I realised what my new normal was going to be like. I didn’t expect that the wetness would be like in my 20s. I wished I hadn’t delayed putting off treatment for my vaginal dryness symptoms.
How has DESIRIAL impacted your confidence levels?
I feel so much more confident. I did expect to feel more sexually comfortable, but as a for a new sense of self that was unexpected.
How did the procedure itself feel?
Although gynae exams and tests can be unpleasant the use of numbing cream meant I couldn’t feel any discomfort
while it was happening. The fact that Dr Farzana actually cared and reassured me throughout really made a difference to being able to relax. Bedside manner matters in intimate care!
How was the recovery process? I had no problem with recovery. I didn’t feel like I had anything done, a couple of little twinges but they were negligible compared to period pain.
Do you recommend DESIRIAL and would you get it again?
I would get DESIRIAL again if I felt that the effects were wearing off. Before I had the treatment, I was embarrassed and I didn’t tell anyone what I was going to do. Now I have told some of my friends whose descriptions of their own vulva and confidence after giving birth have taken a knock. I think the problem is that women just suck it up and don’t even realise that there is an option for help and comfort. Many will joke about being destroyed ‘down there’ and commiserate with each other although they often are miserable about their intimate health.

Answer: This is a common dilemma for many women I see in my practice as not all menopausal women will experience symptoms of menopause. However it is worth being aware that HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) can help the body and organs in many “hidden ways”, even if the patient is not experiencing symptoms.
The decision on whether or not to take HRT is very much a personal one but it is important to be aware of the benefits of HRT as well as the risks before making this choice. There is a lot of confusing and sometimes conflicting information around.
We know that HRT taken before the age of 60 (and sometimes beyond 60) very much helps to reduce the risk of osteoporosis (a condition where bones become very porous, weak and can break), cardiovascular disease and dementia.
In terms of risk with HRT, there is a slight increase in breast cancer risk when taken over the age of 50. However, the medical consensus is that for most women, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks.
One of the “hidden benefits” of HRT is its work in strengthening bones by replenishing oestrogen levels. Levels of oestrogen, an important bone-protecting hormone, start to drop, which triggers the female body to transition towards menopause. This stage is called peri-menopause and normally starts in the mid-40s but some may start up to a decade earlier (or later). Peri-menopause ends with the menopause when oestrogen levels fall low enough to stop periods for a full year.
The hormone oestrogen helps to regulate bone cells called osteoblasts, which are responsible for building new bone. When oestrogen levels drop, fewer cells are produced and bone is lost and not replaced which puts women in danger of osteoporosis.
A Bone Density Scan (DEXA) can diagnose and assess your risk of osteoporosis.

The Diary
Anna and the King
ANNALENE BEECHEY HAS REPRISED HER ROLE IN THIS POPULAR ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN CLASSIC, WHICH ARRIVES IN LEEDS NEXT MONTH.
ollowing a critically acclaimed Broadway smash-hit run, a soldout season at the London Palladium and a previous recordbreaking UK and International tour, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I returns to delight audiences at Leeds Grand Theatre from 31 October to 4 November 2023.
Seasoned musical theatre star Annalene Beechey will reprise the role of Anna Leonowens, joining Broadway star and film actor Darren Lee who will play the title role of The King of Siam.
This gloriously lavish production is brought to the stage by an internationally renowned creative team under Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, My Fair Lady, To Kill a Mockingbird) and will feature a world-class company of talented performers and a full-scale orchestra.
Set in 1860s Bangkok, The King and I tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.
The King and I is a sumptuous, timeless romance from the golden age of musicals, adored by the public and critics alike – and boasting one of the finest scores ever written, including Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance.
We spoke to Annalene to find out more.
What first attracted you to the part of Anna?
Absolutely everything! Anna has a wonderful journey throughout this show, she’s tough, feisty, funny, warm and believes so passionately in the power of knowledge. She also has the most beautiful songs- vocally and lyrically.
What were your first thoughts when you were offered the role?
I was, and still am, very honoured to
play this role. It’s a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical and Bartlett Sher’s Tony Award-winning production is simply beautiful. I was also maybe a little worried about dancing the polka in that huge skirt!
There is a real love story at the heart of the musical – what do you think attracts Anna to the King? There is a tremendous amount of respect between Anna and the King, which grows throughout the show. Anna sees in the King, a man who wants to know everything, to be the best that he can be to protect his people, which sparks in Anna a challenge, and a sort of mutual admiration.
The King is a very single-minded character what qualities does Anna have to win him around to her way of thinking?
I’m not sure she ever does. But what she does do is spark even more questions in him. Anna constantly challenges him to look at every angle, and to do the right thing. He was a very progressive King, and she could offer the real knowledge and experience of the western world which she understood would be invaluable to him.
In lots of ways Anna was a modern woman do think this is why the story has stood the test of time?
Very much so. If you ignore the period costumes and just look at the bare bones of this story, you see a single working
mother doing the best she can for her son. She fights for what she believes in, and cares very deeply for the world in which she is preparing her pupils to live.
What are you doing to prepare for the role?
It’s an enormous role. Requiring physical, vocal, and emotional strength. The dialogue is fast-paced with lovely long scenes to get your teeth into, so I’m revising like crazy. But mainly I’m building up my stamina. I run and I do yoga regularly. You need a strong core for the corset and large skirts.
What’s it like to dance in a crinoline? Hard. You stop and it keeps moving. And it’s very heavy, almost 20 kilos in weight!
What’s your favourite number in the show?
Hard to choose. The ballet is extraordinary. The first time I saw the cast perform it in the rehearsal room, I cried. It took my breath away. And still does. It’s a privilege to watch our incredible dancers perform this up close. Out of the songs I sing, I love performing Hello Young Lovers.
What can audiences expect from the show?
Bartlett Sher’s multi–Tony Award winning Lincoln Centre Theatre production is elegant and classy. Broadway star, Darren Lee is reprising his role as the King, having played him in the US. The show has the most glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein score with songs like Whistle A Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, Shall We Dance and so many more. It’s heart wrenching, funny, intimate, passionate, and opulent. There is so much to enjoy with this production but at its heart it’s simply an extraordinary true story of the King of Siam and an English schoolteacher.

Best known for her wickedly accurate insights into adulting, Sophie thought by the time she became a proper grown up (someone who likes olives), life would be figured out. How very wrong she was.
Feeling like an out-of-depth-teen trapped in the slightly sagging skin suit of a 30-something mum-of-three, why did no one tell her what to really expect after she was expecting? Will her belly button ever go back to normal? Why do you need a degree in collapsing travel cots? Does she have what it takes to stop her current cereal eaters from becoming future serial killers?

JORDAN ODU HAS BEEN VERY BUSY IN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF HIS FORTIES…
So, I’ve got to say the first few weeks of my forties have been epic across the board. I began in style with a trip to the amazing Grantley Hall, where I was treated to an overnight stay and I was blown away by the whole experience. This place redefines next level luxury, it really is that good.
I began with a beautiful dinner in the Orchard, spent the afternoon in the stunning spa before completing the most perfect birthday in the Shaun Rankin Michelin star restaurant. Here, I indulged in a 10-course tasting menu that just kept getting better and better
with each dish. What a night to remember and an amazing birthday.
As we edge closer to the end of summer, I’ve been busy taking advantage of some amazing events over the past month. First up came the launch of Rainbow Street to kick off Leeds Pride.
The vibe was off the hook and the city quite literally lit up, thanks to an amazing DJ set from Stephanie Hirst, with entertainment from some of the UK’s best drag artists. It was so much fun and set the tone for the main Pride event, which few would disagree was one of the best to date.
Over in Harrogate, team Pink Gorilla
hosted a new menu showcase at The Ivy. Believe me when I say there are many highlights, but standouts for me included the Whiskey Barrel Wood Smoked Salmon, Roasted Scallops and Truffle Chicken Milanese. Exceptional food in the most lovely setting.
Don’t miss out on their seasonal special cocktails either. Their Watermelon Aperol Spritz and Strawberry and Mint Martini are both perfectly refreshing and dangerously moreish.
On the subject of Harrogate, one of the town's hottest brunch spots is expanding to open a second venue in
central Leeds. Farmhouse has built up a cult following based on its divine brunch options and imaginative comfort food dishes.
They’re arriving in Leeds at the end of summer and trust me when I say you don’t want to miss their Cinnamon French Toast, Bubble Red Shrimp with Curry Mayo and Chipotle Chicken Burger.
Head Chef Tom Hunter, formerly of The Reliance, will lead the all-day kitchen, bringing with him a wealth of culinary skills. This is going to be the place to get your brunch kicks, watch this space for news on the launch.
Last but not least, anyone that follows me on social may have seen the jawdropping results of the Restaurant Bar
Grill refurbishment. The launch party really went off, with guests blown away by the £2m makeover. As well as gorgeous new interiors and with one of the best terraces in Leeds to enjoy the sunshine, the Butcher’s Table has to be my favourite addition.
Designed to be the ultimate space for hosting, it comes highly recommended if you’re serious about your steak. It doesn’t get any better than this. That’s me done for this month, so take care and I hope to see you out and about soon.
Cinnamon French Toast at FarmhouseHappy Sundays
arrogate was again named among the happiest places to live in the UK last year and, after spending an afternoon in this beautiful Victorian spa town, it is easy to see why.
Renowned for its quaint tea rooms and famous residents which include England football manager Gareth Southgate, this well-heeled corner of North Yorkshire is the perfect place for a day trip or mini break.
You are spoilt for choice here when it comes to fine dining and Hotel du Vin’s authentic bistro certainly takes some topping. With its sophisticated décor, sociable atmosphere and flourishes of French flair, you immediately feel at home in this fabulous establishment.
The conversion of four Georgian townhouses into a gorgeous hotel boasting 48 rooms and suites overlooks the Stray and Montpellier Hill. It’s nestled in the heart of the town: adjacent to the bars and restaurants on John Street, and perpendicular to James Street with its higher-end shops. Soft and elegant with an old-world-meets-new feel – like the fine wine in its cellars –this is a hotel dripping with luxurious charm.
Betty’s is a scone’s throw away, as is the trendy Montpellier Quarter, and dining at Hotel du Vin is certainly a true delight. The bistro specialises in French fare and boasts an extensive wine list, while the Sunday Lunch menu represents outstanding value at £29.95 for two courses and £34.95 for three courses. There is a sumptuous French Market Table – effectively a salad bar – which offers a wide range of delicious offerings as a starter.
The Soup of the Day – French onion –goes down a treat with my friend (who admits it scores higher than his homemade version) and an amazing
buffet of meats, fish, salad and bread. Cold smoked salmon? Oh yes. Shell on prawns? Just wow. A selection of charcuterie, grilled vegetables, pickles, potato salad, courgette, green bean and halloumi salad, fennel, feta and pomegranate salad, mixed leaf salad and freshly baked artisan breads? Bring this on. The choice, the splendour, the tastiness of the food on offer made for a stunning starter, particularly for me as a fish lover, with the cold smoked salmon a highlight.
At first there is just my friend and I plus another pair of diners in for lunch. But it soon begins to fill up with couples and families on a glorious Sunday in mid-August. With the weather warm and sunny, there are also plenty of people outside enjoying alfresco dining or a drink on the terrace. No surprise there given the wide range of wines, beers and cocktails (signature, spritz, classic champagne and non-alcoholic cocktails are all available) on offer. The service from the plentiful staff on duty is attentive, friendly and professional. It is outstanding. I opt for a pint of Birra Moretti and my friend, something of a wine connoisseur, ordered a glass of Malbec by Hotel du Vin, a fine drop of claret from Mendoza in Argentina.
With our starters from the French Market Table well and truly devoured, it is time for the main course. Hotel du Vin’s bistro has a sense of sophistication and pays a perfect complement to its ethos, which is all about serving heartwarming, traditional French food and regionally sourced quality ingredients.
There is an enticing yet moderately priced à la carte menu but, with it being Sunday lunchtime, my friend and I could not resist plumping for a traditional Sunday lunch. We had seen a couple of other diners tucking it in the same meal and went for it. It is, after all, a British
institution. Meats were traditionally roasted in front of a fire on a Sunday, dating back to the reign of King Henry VII. Since the 15th century, the royal bodyguards have been known as ‘Beefeaters’ because of their love of eating roast beef.
In the 18th century the French started calling Englishmen ‘rosbifs’. Thus it is only fitting that ‘rosbif ’ is one of centrepieces of the perfect Sunday lunch at Hotel du Vin.
There is a choice of roast sirloin of beef or roast chicken and stuffing. We both opt for the beef and it is beautifully garnished with all the trimmings, including proper Yorkshire puddings. The potatoes, cabbage and carrots are also perfectly cooked with the quality and quantity of the food to be applauded.
Music plays gently in the background, adding to the lovely ambience in a perfect place to unwind without a care in the world at the end of a busy week. Still we are not finished and there is still time for a dessert with my friend going for a Sorbet ice cream and I opting for a rich chocolate mousse with griottines accompanied by cherries and black cherry coulis.
Striking a perfect balance between traditional and modern, this is the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon. I already have plans to return.

RICHARD ABBEY VISITS THE IVY ASIA LOCATED IN LEEDS’ VICTORIAN QUARTER AND IS REWARDED WITH JAPANESE VISUAL AND MOUTH-WATERING TREATS.
T
he Ivy Asia has been a welcome addition to the Leeds dining scene with its fusion of flavours, show-stopping cocktails and live music late into the night. And that’s not taking into account the fabulous décor, the impeccable service or how it seems to be a venue for all occasions.
We’d arrived to sample the new ‘Summer Lunch Stack’ menu as well as the Summer Spritz collection, a collaboration with Whitley Neill to create an exquisite light and refreshing cocktail menu inspired by the elegance of Ikebana, the centuries-old Japanese art of arranging flowers.
There was a definite floral elegance to the Ohara (£12.75), which was made
with Whitley Neill Connoisseur’s cut gin, strawberry purée, hibiscus, yuzu purée, elderflower and Prosecco. It was sweet and refreshing and perfect for a summer’s day.
The Eiko Ai (£12.75), made with Aperol, Passoa, Whitley Neill Blood Orange Gin, Yuzushu sake, Fever-Tree Blood Orange Soda and Akashi Tai Junmai Ginjo, had that gentle bitterness that lingered nicely on the tastebuds. Cocktails are a great way to start any visit to The Ivy Asia and gave us ample opportunity to take in our surroundings. The restaurant is located in Leeds’ Victoria Quarter and after being greeted at the downstairs reception area we were whisked upstairs to our booth-style table.
The décor is something special and is dominated by an artificial cherry blossom tree and underlit floor that is a riot of colour. Walls are draped in gold wallpaper and traditional Japanese artworks complemented by plump soft furnishings and velvet seating. The attention to detail is unbelievable, right down to the little fish that support your chopsticks. We were suitably impressed.
I’ll be honest, I had my preconceptions about my visit to The Ivy Asia but any thoughts that this would be very much style over substance was quickly dispelled when our food arrived. Although we were here to try the lunch menu that didn’t stop us looking at the a la carte menu, which includes dishes
such as Szechuan spiced chicken, black cod and spicy lobster and aromatic duck fried rice.
First, we thought we’d try some flamed edamame with spicy dip (£4.95), which were incredibly more-ish and washed down nicely by our rapidly-decreasing cocktails.
There are two Summer Lunch Stacks available, vegetarian and non-vegetarian (both £22.50 per person), which are served from 11.30am-4.30pm. There’s a cross-over of some dishes but we decided to order one of each to get the full experience.
The stacks arrive exactly as you’d imagine, as three stacked plates which can then be separated at the table to reveal the delights underneath. I’d opted for the non-vegetarian version and found a top stack filled with clay pot chickpea and green pepper curry choi sum, coconut and curry leaf, and steamed rice. Sweet and subtly spiced, this was complemented by spiced peanut chicken skewers with coconut, spring onion and fresh lime. And don’t worry, you’re
provided with a spoon to scrape up every last bit.
Underneath was three mushroom gyoza which had been dressed in a spiced yuzu dressing and pink peppercorns. These were delicious; soft but, having been fried on one side, has a crispness too.
At the bottom of the stack were six spicy salmon and avocado rolls topped green chilli and served with wasabi and pickled ginger. A teapot of soy sauce and serving plates were already on the table.
The vegetarian version was almost identical, the only difference being that the sushi came in the form of avocado, cucumber and asparagus rolls and the curry was served with vegetable tempura rather than chicken. We mixed and matched and enjoyed both versions just as much.
As an extra we shared some spiced avocado, tomato salsa, pickled red onion, coriander, green chilli and masago arare (£10.95), which was incredibly freshtasting and served as a sort of palatecleanser between the different dishes.
Dessert is available too and comes in the form of soft serve ice cream, mango sauce and coconut (£6) – we shared one between two which was just right and provided a sweet finish to our meal.
For me, the Summer Lunch Stack is incredible value for money; there’s a lot of food and it’s such a treat in such spectacular surroundings. What’s more, service is speedy meaning you can be in and out in under an hour if you have a tight schedule.
There’s definitely substance to go with the style at The Ivy Asia. For once, I was more than happy to be proved wrong. We loved it and can’t wait to return.
