A Celebrating the ARTS

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate was recently awarded a Gold Artsmark.

ward-winning independent school, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), are celebrating after receiving a prestigious Gold Award from Artsmark, who are accredited by Arts Council England. Artsmark offer the only creative quality standard for schools and to achieve the award, QE had to develop their arts and cultural provision to embed a broad and ambitious curriculum.

On receiving the award, Helen Stephenson, Head of Creative Arts at QE said: “We’re extremely proud of achieving our Gold Artsmark Award. We are committed to delivering a high-quality arts and cultural education and are looking forward to growing our provision alongside Artsmark.”

Dr Darren Henley OBE, Chief Executive of the Arts Council, said: “I would like to

congratulate Queen Ethelburga’s on their Artsmark Award. Becoming an Artsmark school demonstrates that through offering a broad, ambitious and creative curriculum, young people have the opportunity to develop character and resilience, increasing their knowledge, curiosity and skills that will remain with them through to adult life.”

The school offers an ambitious provision of over 30 courses across art and design, music, drama and dance with numerous opportunities throughout the year to perform and compete in individual and team disciplines. With an impressive 39 per cent of their students choosing to pursue Creative Arts subjects for GCSE, BTEC, or A Level in 2023-24, it is perhaps no surprise that QE regularly achieves recognition in national competitions.

In 2023 alone, students achieved a win,

runner up, and a highly commended in the ISA Arts Young Musician Competition, two Competition, a win in the ISA Shakespeare the ISA Musical Theatre Competition, and a win in the ISA Band Competition. And in creative arts, QE students enjoyed wins in the ISA National Art competition for KS5 3D Design (2023), KS4 Sketchbook (2023), and KS5 Photography (2022 and 2023) as well as regional success in 2023 with ISA Northern Arts wins for KS5 2D Art, KS4 3D Design, KS4 Photography, and KS5 Textiles.

in Rouge- Moul

he sultry, mysterious atmosphere of Paris is coming to a theatre near you in an incredible show featuring all your favourite hits from the iconic movie-musical Moulin Rouge.

Come What May stars AJ and Curtis Pritchard (Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing With The Stars, Love Island) and a cast of West End performers and arrives at York Barbican on 29 September.

This high-energy musical extravaganza, from leading producers Sisco Entertainment and promoters Cuffe & Taylor and Live Nation, is a guaranteed hit with all audiences looking for a night of non-stop entertainment.

more.

With ‘Come What May’, was it always the case that both of you were to be on board from the start, or one was

AJ: It was always both of us, to be able to do something together is fantastic. We say ‘no’ to so many different tours and different things and sometimes we might say to ourselves, “Why did we say no to that?” and then ‘Come What May’ came along and ‘this’ is why we said no to that, because this tour is the ultimate tribute to ‘Moulin Rouge’ and other fantastic musicals. And we get to add even more value to these songs that each person’s probably got a different emotional attraction to. Then

the energy; it’s overwhelming and such a fantastic opportunity to dance to these global hits. Personally, my favourite theatre show is Moulin Rouge.

Curtis: Yeah, I’ve got to admit it, it is a very good one and everybody can’t deny that.

So, it’ll be a show with massive songs from ‘Moulin Rouge’, with fans having high expectations. Surely that brings an element of nervousness to you as performers - performing those songs

Curtis: I’ll be nervous before going on nervous before going on for all the shows. I think nerves give you a bit of adrenaline and it gets you into the right mindset to rock ‘n’ roll. But, as of this moment, no,

because some of my favourite songs are in it. ‘Your Song’, is perhaps one of my favourite songs to sing. ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ isn’t my favourite song because you’re not gonna catch me singing that one on my own around the house! [Laughs]

AJ: No, I think what’s really exciting is usually with a tour you have the stress or the paranoia of, “OK, we’re not selling tickets” or the reception isn’t good or we mentioned it to friends and family who’ve said, “Oh, I think I’ll give that one a miss”. Whereas the reception to this has been so overwhelming because it’s got the ‘Moulin Rouge’ side, and people love musicals, people love to see a live show. And that’s

talk about this as each person we’ve talked to has a relevant connection to a song that will be used within the show. And that’s kind of the easy thing for us. All we have to do is just do what we do best, choreograph, dance, perform and enjoy what we already do.

What can we expect from your

Will it only be dancing, or are you

Curtis: Solo numbers, big group numbers; there’ll be singing here and there. Presenting, acting, the whole lot to be fair. AJ: Yeah, a bit of everything because

sometimes when you go to a theatre show, you don’t know what the storyline is, or what the concept of what the music will be. Whereas I think because it’s so well known we get to add that value. Yes, we’ll that!

Curtis will do one thing and I’ll be doing more of the presenting side. But what’s already there is so good and it’s quite nice to be able to come and see something and add an adaptation - if I could say - a numbers, but it’s really exciting to kind of build on something that’s so well known.

Lastly, you’ve got some of the biggest producers and promoters behind this tour, so could you say it’s shaping up

AJ: It’s great to be working with Sisco, Cuffe & Taylor and Live Nation. If you mention these names within the theatre world, you know, you’re going to get quality.

You’re getting something that they would not put their name to if they didn’t feel proud of it, I think that’s really important. In this day and age with the value of the pound, people are struggling and we want to give great value with this show, the set,

would be embarrassed to turn up and be like, “Oh no, this is not something I’d want to put my name to”. And I think that’s the hardest thing sometimes; it’s picking and choosing your battles, and who you want to work with. These are people that we want to work with. These are the producers that give it everything.

Heart and SOUL

Vibrant Liverpool makes for a great getaway - and Richard Abbey may have found the perfect hotel from which to explore.

etting away for a few days is good for the body, mind and soul, whether you’re looking for something calm and tranquil or for something with a bit more life. Switching off from the stresses of work and home is essential to our wellbeing – but where to go?

Whilst a quiet country retreat might sound idyllic, and certainly has its place, you can’t beat the buzz of a big city and they don’t come much more vibrant than Liverpool.

Since being named the European Capital of Culture in 2008 the city has transformed and is the perfect location for a short break, whether you’re travelling with friends or family. There’s so much to see and do.

To explore the best the city has to offer you’ll need a good base and The Halyard, which opened in the Ropewalks area of the city in March, ticks all the right boxes for location, luxury and comfort and has a very good bar and restaurant too.

The Halyard is part of IHG Hotels &

hotel in the UK to open under this banner. This collection is part of IHG’s growing Luxury & Lifestyle and these characteristics were present all over the property.

The Halyard has 133 bedrooms of which there are three different types and its identity is anchored in Liverpool’s maritime heritage. The building stands on the footprint of a former 18th century rope-making warehouse and its name comes from a nautical term for a rope knot. The interiors are beautifully crafted with industrial elegance complemented by vibrant colours, a nod to the city’s

abundance all over the city.

Our rooms were spacious and had all the little luxuries that enhance your stay just that little bit more, including coffee machines, complimentary drinks fridges,

robes and slippers, and Temple Spa toiletries. We loved the layout with the sink and dressing area separate to the bathroom and dividing ‘wardrobe’ which separated the room creating a distinct bedroom area.

In addition to the 133 bedrooms The Halyard has two meeting rooms for business guests as well as a rooftop gym with Peloton bikes and views over the city.

Perhaps most impressive is the 200-seater bar, lounge and restaurant which are open to all and serves globally-inspired dishes with a local twist, a great selection of organic and natural wines, plus signature cocktails, some of which are made from locallydistilled gin.

Voyagers, as the restaurant is known, is headed up by head chef Jake Parry who serves up a dinner menu of small and large plates, plus all-day dining options and afternoon tea.

cinnamon choux bun (£8.50), which was apple pieces and ginger nut ice cream and then topped with a miso caramel.

If you’re travelling with family there was also a decent children’s menu.

Away from the hotel, a short walk brings you to Liverpool ONE, which is home to 170 shops, bars, restaurants and leisure experiences, including the huge Gravity Max. This large two-storey complex is home to all manner of entertainment including e-karting, AR bowling, AR darts, batting cages, urban street golf,

arena. There’s also a huge roof terrace, two bars and lots of food options. We tried the bowling and golf, which we really enjoyed, and my children loved the gaming arcade, even managing to win a Minion on one of the ‘grabbers’.

Not too far away is the famous Royal Albert Dock, Mersey Ferry Terminal and museums – the Museum of Liverpool, International Slavery Museum and Maritime Museum – as well as the Tate Gallery and The Beatles Story. The Dock is well worth a visit and also a great spot to hop on one of the open top bus tours; a great and informative way to see some of the city’s best sights.

The Beatles, and music in general, feature heavily throughout the city and it’s worth exploring the Cavern Walks as well as the Ropewalks area close to The Halyard, which is the vibrant heart of the city’s cultural scene. Centred around Bold restaurants and music venues as well as independent and vintage shops as well as galleries and art spaces.

I can’t say our break was relaxing but see and do in what we felt was a city with real heart and atmosphere. And The Halyard is right in the thick of it.

Want to capture your big day in a different way? Illustrator Catherine Davis can create something truly bespoke.

Weddings have evolved in recent years with more and more couples looking for something different to make their special day really stand out.

displays have all been done but what about a live wedding illustrator?

It’s something Catherine Davis happened on by chance but found she was completely suited to it and, above all, really enjoyed it. Catherine was always creative growing up and after studying Art and Design at A Level, completed her degree in Textile

Live illustration is another string to her bow.

We spoke to the Calderdale-based

How did you become a wedding illustrator?

My wonderful friend and hairdresser Emily, who I’ve known for years, was chatting about her up coming wedding and

she happened to mention that she wanted a Live Wedding Artist, but was struggling

I’d never heard of one before and so she showed me a few TikTok videos and I just thought ‘wow, I could do that’. So, I offered to do it. What better way to start than at a friend’s wedding.

We talked about what she wanted, I did a lot of research, practiced illustrating people and kept showing her my style and she loved it and was happy to book me. The feedback from guests watching me paint was so positive and Emily and Ross loved was hooked! Right then I decided that this was what I wanted to do in my business. Since then, the live painting has grown from doing one main painting of the happy couple on their wedding day in situ, to live guest illustration throughout the day.

I also get commissions to paint wedding venues as wedding gifts which makes a unique present from a guest.

Images courtesy Photography by Ellen

How does it work?

It’s important to me that the client knows exactly what I can do and what to expect from me on the day. So, there’s lots of communication months before their big day so I am clear on what they want. I send out a list of questions asking them about a priority list (who they want illustrating

face illustration style do they want if any (I offer a few different styles, but some couples prefer the modern ‘no faces’ guests are scheduled to arrive, what time is the wedding ceremony and the wedding breakfast and so on. This is key. Planning and preparation are everything.

I arrive about an hour before any of the guests to set up, connect with the wedding venue co-ordinator so they know what to expect and make sure I’m positioned in a good place; somewhere visible but not in the way, so guests can approach me to watch me paint, ask questions and get their photograph taken or collect their illustration later in the day.

As soon as guests arrive, I aim to get photographs of the ‘priority list’ guests, these are usually family, groomsmen, best man, bridesmaids, grandparents etc. When the ceremony starts I begin illustrating. I’m hired for six hours of illustration but it’s a full day for me and I love every minute. Listening to the speeches and the fun, entertaining, loving stories people tell about

I sit and illustrate quietly in a corner of the room!

Tell us about your style.

I’d say my illustration style is unique and individual to each illustration. Each one is drawn from scratch working from a photo that I have taken of the guest on the day. I begin with sketching in pencil, then outline the detail in ink and them add watercolour last. They are fun illustrations and a lovely memento for the guests to take home.

How long does it take you to complete

As my style is quite unique and I work

about 15 minutes to illustrate an individual and 30 minutes for a couple. They aren’t fashion illustrations. I aim to add as much detail as possible to make each one unique to each guest/couple and this works really well for smaller intimate weddings.

I am now offering speed illustrations. These are smaller, less detailed every ten minutes and will suit much larger weddings.

And you make bespoke wedding stationery as well?

I do, although the Live Wedding Illustration has become much more dominant in my business now. I outsource the printing to local printers but all the design, artwork and layout of the wedding stationery is done by me.

What about your future plans?

Building the live Wedding Illustration is my priority. As well as adding ‘speed illustrations’ to my packages I am looking to add something else too, but I’m not quite ready to share this, so watch this space.

I’d love to be hired to illustrate live at other events too like awards ceremonies, birthdays, Christmas parties, charity events, etc, or even a wedding or event abroad, that would be amazing!
