C

hanges are afoot at Harrogate’s stylish Scandinavian interiors store, Rasmus. A new chapter has begun in the business’s illustrious history, with a new showroom in the heart of the spa town’s most popular shopping district. “We loved the old building on Royal Parade but when the opportunity arose to relocate to Commercial Street, we just couldn’t resist,” says Sally Rasmussen who, along with her Danish husband Kjeld, established Rasmus in 2006. “People like that we’re a local, independent company with a fantastic team so, when designing the new shop, we were very mindful of keeping the Rasmus welcome we’re so well known for.” And keep it they have, with the trademark personal approach still evident in spades the moment you step through the door of the beautifully sunlit showroom. Using the expertise and skills built up over a decade in the business, they have created a wonderful new world of contemporary interiors and continue to expand their growing commercial services. From just one item to a full house project, whatever your needs, Rasmus is here to help. Particularly well loved are the Rasmus Bespoke Bedrooms, available to both domestic and commercial customers. With the

magical ability to make a cluttered home seem instantly roomier, they hide mess, form clean lines and create a wonderful sense of space. The team tasked with designing and installing these creations pay incredibly close attention to detail and work closely with their clients to gain a true understanding of their design tastes and lifestyle. This ensures the furniture not only looks fantastic but really works for them – and it won’t cost the earth. “Our bespoke bedrooms are incredibly well priced, especially when you take a closer look at the quality of design, craftsmanship and materials on offer,” says Sally. “By combining the perfect bed, bedside tables, dresser and wardrobes, we create both a tranquil space to sleep and dream and an exceptionally organised room with everything in its place.”

In addition to their own bedroom range is a wealth of products from authentic, high quality suppliers. Sally is particularly taken with three of their most popular brands – Limited Edition flooring,VITA lighting and String shelving systems. “Vita is so reasonably priced and you can completely change the look of a room with lighting so it’s a fantastic investment for those on a tighter budget,” says Sally. “Belgian brand Limited Edition has a stunning range of unique, hand-tufted rugs and wall-to-wall carpets and we have every sample in the showroom so you can bring along paint colours or fabric cuttings to find the best match. “I’m also in love with Swedish brand String, which designs modular desks, shelving and storage solutions. Each piece is bespoke so we’ll come out to measure the space or you can bring measurements in and it will transform any room in the house.” Whether you’re after a complete refurbishment or one key piece, next time you’re sampling the retail delights of Harrogate be sure to pop into the new showroom to chat to the friendly staff and browse the beautiful furnishings. NS Legal

What does probate actually mean? Duncan Watson, of Stowe Family Law, explains.

Executor decisions

W

hen someone dies, family members often mention they have to ‘go through probate’. People may know exactly what they mean by this, but often what is involved is far greater than what was envisaged. Being pedantic, the process should actually be referred to as the administration of the deceased person’s estate. The word probate actually refers to a document (a ‘grant of probate’) issued by the court which gives legal authority to the executors of a will to deal with the deceased person’s possessions. Certain types of possessions and property can only be dealt with, or accessed by executors, with a grant of probate. These include things such as houses, company shares and bank accounts with large sums of money in them. It is normal when making a will to appoint executors to carry out the terms of the will and administer the estate. Executors could be family members, trusted friends or solicitors. The administration of the estate involves valuing it (valuing the personal possessions, property, bank accounts etc, and then deducting any debts), completing a tax return and sending it to HMRC, obtaining the grant of probate, then paying off any debts and distributing the remaining assets in accordance with the terms of the will. One thing that confuses people is you can’t apply for a grant of probate until any

NS • page 8

inheritance tax due is paid. At the same time, you can’t access funds to pay the tax until the grant is applied for, which seems like a Catch 22 situation. Given that the time following someone’s death is extremely difficult, the stress of trying to work through these murky legal waters can add unnecessary pressure to the deceased’s family, especially if one or more of them are acting as executors. People must be aware of the stringent

‘It’s not a straightforward process and, with the upset that naturally follows someone’s death, it is well worth getting advice from a legal professional who can guide you.’

duties that fall on the executor, such as a duty to ensure all beneficiaries are found and all debts repaid, whether the executor is aware of them or not. What often concerns executors is that they are personally liable for any undischarged debts to the estate, or claims by beneficiaries they were unaware of, if they have not taken certain steps to enable these people to come forward. It’s not a straightforward process and, with the upset that naturally follows someone’s death, it is well worth getting advice from a legal professional who can guide you.

LEEDS’ HISTORIC HOUSES HOST NEW EXHIBITIONS… Lotherton Hall will present the debut exhibition of the brand new Fashion Galleries this May with Age of Glamour: Fashion from the Fifties. The 1950s was truly an age of glamour. Once again fashion looked towards Paris for inspiration. With the launch of Dior’s ‘New Look’ in 1947, a style emerged that completely captured the imagination of this post-war era. With elegant couture displayed alongside many other beautiful dresses of the period, Age of Glamour explores the impact of Parisian design on British fashion – from the fancy department stores selling exclusive ready-to-wear labels, to high street stores like Marks & Spencer. Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

Leeds Midnight Walk

F

ancy a girls night out with a difference? On Saturday 16 May, the Leeds Midnight Walk is back for its ninth year and it’s a great opportunity to spend your Saturday night supporting St Gemma’s Hospice. This ladies-only walk will take you around Kirkstall, Horsforth and West Park on either a seven or ten-mile route. The walk sets off at 10pm from Xercise 4 Less Gym and when midnight strikes you will be well on your way to one of the half way points for a hot drink and chocolatey treat. This really is a fantastic opportunity for

the ladies of Leeds to get together and support St Gemma’s. There is time to chat to other participants before the walk sets off and hear why they’re walking – it could be in memory of someone, or because they want to support the hospice and this event is a great way to do just that. Before the walk sets off there will be entertainment, face painting and chance to buy candle bags that you can lay out to light the path around Kirkstall Abbey. Your hard work, commitment and the sponsorship you will be raising will not only directly help a patient now, it will also help create long-lasting memories for the families that patient leaves behind – memories of special, pain-free, comfortable and dignified times with their loved one. These times are only possible at St Gemma’s with your help. So it may only be a one night challenge

for you, but rest assured that one night of support from you, gives many nights of support to our patients and their families. Registration is open now at www.leedsmidnightwalk.co.uk or contact Becky for a paper registration form on 0113 218 5505.

Diamond crossheart pendant

A gem of a find You’ll find the largest collection of Whitby Jet jewellery in the world at W.Hamond. But what makes it so unique?

U

nbeknown to many, it’s not always the far flung corners of the world where you’ll find stunning gemstones. Here in Britain, there is a beautiful, intense gem that’s been a head-turner for centuries, known as Whitby Jet. It’s found off the majestic shores of Whitby – Yorkshire’s archetypal fishing town – where W. Hamond, The Original Whitby Jet Shop, has been transforming it into desirable jewellery since local man James Storr first opened its doors to an admiring public in 1860. At its peak in 1890, some 1,700 of Whitby’s townsfolk were employed in the trade. Whilst the busy Victorian workshop has now been replaced by modern equipment and a healthy working environment, each W. Hamond piece is still individually handcrafted at the Whitby boutique, after it has been collected from the local coastline. For over 150 years, W. Hamond has continued as a family-run business, providing customers with the finest Whitby Jet collections, from rare antique pieces to beautiful contemporary silver, gold and platinum designs. Whitby Jet is an ancient, organic gemstone formed over millions of years from the compressed wood of the araucaria araucana (commonly known as monkey puzzle tree). In its natural state it is sometimes found embedded with fossils of long extinct animals. Once cut, shaped and polished, it is transformed into the most beautiful deep

black and mysterious of stones – considered by some to have magical properties and provide protection against evil. Following the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria wore Whitby Jet as mourning jewellery and continued to do so for the rest of her life. The intensely dark and seductive qualities of Whitby Jet were never so popular as with the Victorians and the intricate designs of the town’s skilful artisans remain as stunning today as they were 150 years ago. Black, bold and beautiful – these designs are once again much in demand as statement pieces. Over the years, W. Hamond has collated one of the most diverse collections of antique Whitby Jet available – a truly unique selection of period designs to wear with pride and pass on to future generations. Its association with mourning long past, Whitby Jet is now worn as stylish everyday jewellery by both men and women. W. Hamond has the largest collection of fine Whitby Jet jewellery in the world and is also the first manufacturer to set the rare British gem alongside diamonds, raising its

profile to that of opulence and importance. As well as their beautiful, handcrafted jewellery, W. Hamond is also the proud owner of the world’s largest Whitby Jet gemstone. The record breaking gemstone is a staggering 21ft in length and is currently on view at the Whitby boutique. Visit the traditional seaside town of Whitby, where you will discover the wonderful and unrivalled selection of Whitby Jet jewellery. You can watch as W. Hamond’s skilled craftsmen bring the collections to life and be sure to visit the lovely tea rooms, which are situated directly above the boutique. You will also find stunning Whitby Jet jewellery at W. Hamond’s boutiques in Leeds’ Victoria Quarter, the north’s premier fashion and lifestyle destination, as well as on the Shambles, the oldest street in the historical city of York. NS Cycling

Freewheel your way into spring with a visit to Specialized Concept Store Harrogate.

Choose your bike

T

he last couple of weeks have felt like spring has sprung already, and with that comes dreams of the longer, warmer and drier days to come. One thing that good weather makes easier is cycling, and with cycling being hailed as ‘the new golf’, surely there’s no better time to think about getting out on two wheels. There are many different types of cyclist though, let’s not pretend that we all want to be Mark Cavendish, some of us just want to enjoy some sunny rides along the towpath to a country pub. Here’s our guide to the various types of bike on offer, with all types of budgets, and users in mind.

Hybrids These bikes are the do-it-all of the cycling world, they’re what you might use day-to-day, they’re great for a five-mile cycle to work, perfect for a Sunday ride along a disused railway, and can cope well with a dry track through a forest. The position is fairly upright, and therefore comfortable. A good hybrid like the Specialized ‘Sirrus’ offers a lightweight alloy frame, 24 gears (which should get you up any hill), space for mudguards and, the best part is that it’s only £400.

Mountain Bikes These bikes are designed to be ridden off road, through the mud, up and down steep single tracks, some of them can be jumped and, they’re all capable of providing a massive grin. They’ll have at least front suspension to soak up the many trail bumps you’ll be hitting at speed, and disc brakes which work in the

NS • page 38

rain to slow you at the drop of a hat. The Specialized ‘Rockhopper Sport’ has all of the above, and starts at £550. For women there’s the Specialized ‘Jynx’ from £425. For weekend warriors who’ll be visiting trail centres around the UK for performance and adventure, the Specialized ‘Stumpjumper’ (for men) and Specialized ‘Rumour’ (for women) start at £2,500 and £1,500 respectively. They include both front and rear suspension and hydraulic disc brakes. For higher performance including carbon frames, the bikes reach as far north as £7,000 for a top notch ‘S-Works’ race model.

Road Bikes Until recently these bikes with their dropped handlebars were often known as ‘racers’. They still are sometimes, which is appropriate, because a big percentage of the pro tour wins, like last year’s Tour de France, were won on Specialized road bikes. Bikes like a Specialized ‘Tarmac’, which has a full carbon monocoque frame, start from £1,500 up to £8,000 for the same model Specialized Tarmac as ridden by the SpecializedSponsored Astana Team, or Mark Cavendish’s Etixx-Quickstep team. Of course you’ll need the kit to go with it, The Specialized Concept Store in Harrogate carry a full range of spring and summer kit, including Mark Cavendish’s signature kit.

Kids Bikes Passing on the skill and joy of riding a bike is a great gift to your child, it’s something they’ll hopefully never leave, and, as the old adage goes: “You never forget how to ride a bike”.

Getting them there is another story though, there are going to be some tantrums, some tears and some cut knees. Actually even at 33 years old, the cut knees never end. There are a few schools of thought on the subject of teaching your child to ride a bike: The big movement right now dispenses with the idea of stabilisers, and opts for a balance bike like the Specialized ‘Hotwalk’. The idea is that a child learns to balance before they attempt to use the pedals, and they don’t become overly reliant on the artificial stability that training wheels bring. After all, those wheels (hopefully) won’t be there forever. Using this method, children can start younger, and after a while they can be promoted to a pedal bike. There is still of-course the old school option of using stabilisers, like with the Specialized ‘Hotrock Coaster’, and what’s more, the stabilisers can be removed when needed without tools. Using this method, the child should be versed in using brakes from the start. The child should be supported by holding their shoulders/upper back. A slight uphill can be chosen to control the speed safely while a grassy/open area is best for obvious reasons. Get in contact with the Specialized Concept Store in Harrogate on West Park to try out some bikes and the new summer 2015 kit.

Total relaxation Get away from it all – and sample some famous Yorkshire hospitality – at the Feversham Arms & Verbena Spa.

T

he Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa is, quite simply, the last word in relaxation. From its location, in the tranquil traditional market town of Helmsley, you might assume it is a country house hotel, but that is not entirely true. Nor is it a boutique hotel. This unique venue is a luxury hideaway, designed to help guests retreat, relax and indulge. Guests from all over the world come simply to get away from it all, or to sample some famous Yorkshire hospitality… with a delicious touch of luxury that borders on the decadent. The Verbena Spa relaxation lounge is defined by plump cushions, sofas you sink into, and views across the south facing terrace garden. The spa houses six single treatment rooms and one couples room, in which guests can experience a tandem therapy, perfect for couples or ladies who would like to have a chat whilst they’re pampered. The spa has an extensive Heat Experience including an aromatherapy room, salt inhalation chamber, saunarium, monsoon shower, foot spas and ice fountain. This section can be experienced in conjunction with treatments or on its own as a wonderfully effective detox for your skin, sinuses and mind. If you book any spa day packages you can enjoy the heat experience, so don’t forget to arrive in plenty of time to utilise the facilities to the full.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

The Verbena Spa facilities will match every mood. Sample these and lift your spirits…

allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the day of pampering that lies ahead.

Aromatherapy Room Perfect for relaxation, increasing circulation, cleansing and toning the skin – essential oils are infused into the room, allowing you to gently de-stress.

Monsoon Feature Shower The perfect way to refresh between heat treatments and to cleanse your body and brighten your soul.

Steam Room The benefits and experience are similar to a walk along the beach, imagine the sea spray and the crisp, fresh aroma from the waves. The vapour leaves the skin feeling smoother, any dryness or sensitivity is noticeably reduced and the warm salt water mist also leaves you refreshed and re-energised. Saunarium Saunariums have long been known to aid relaxation. Let the heat envelop you, soothe your body and let your cares drift away,

The Ice Fountain The ice fountain is based on the Finnish custom of rolling in the snow. Simply take handfuls of ice flakes from the continuously fed ice bowl and rub into the skin helping the pores to close and allowing the body to cool down quickly after experiencing a hot room treatment. Outdoor Jacuzzi Holds up to six guests and is located in the spa garden, a few steps from the indoor heat experience facilities and from our outdoor heated poo. Outdoor Heated Pool Open all year round, the pool is the centre of a secluded courtyard area. Up to two metres deep in places, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of swimming in a heated pool whilst breathing the fresh, cool air. NS Eating Out

With its excellent wine list, great food and relaxed atmosphere, fifty50 is 100 per cent set for success.

No half measures! Words and photography: Chris Wilson

H

aving done some research, I was keen to impress my dining companion with a spot of background knowledge about our chosen eaterie for

the evening. So I casually dropped into the conversation the fact that the venue in question was called fifty50 because the coowners had taken an equal stake in the business, were both due to reach their half centuries age-wise, and the premises was half a restaurant and half a bar. “Really?” came the response, accompanied by a cool, steady look at the trendy mix-and-match combination of plaster and bare brick in the basement restaurant. “I assumed it was a reference to the paint job.” Making a mental note not to invite such a clever clogs on my next dining assignment, it was time to take stock of the venue that opened in late 2014 in Boston Spa. John Batty and Simon Courtman’s aim was to produce a versatile space that locals could use both as a bar and a relaxed dining area and, judging by the busy, bustling atmosphere when we dropped by, they have well and truly found their market. The urban industrial theme works well and with a versatile split-level dining area equally suited to couples and larger groups, and an open kitchen for that little extra piece of theatre, a lot has been achieved within a relatively small space. The menu is packed with variety, including classic diner food like steaks and burgers along with more sophisticated bistro fare. There is also an intriguing list of ‘artisan hand-stretched pizza’ including some original flavours. I suspect the Italian restaurant that used to occupy the same space probably would not have offered up a thin and crispy

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

topped with camembert, rosemary, roasted pear, pine nut and honey, to name just one. There is an excellent wine list too, with some unexpected finds from which we selected a fantastic Spanish white, Cossetana Xavel. This easy-drinking mix of young and clean green fruit and zingy pineapple was certainly new to me and I can see myself returning to it throughout the summer. For starters, half a rack of pork ribs was slow-cooked to falling-off-the-bone perfection and a crispy duck salad provided equal satisfaction. My main course was the special fish dish of the day; pan-fried sea bass with arancini and queenie scallops. The fish was fresh, beautifully cooked with crispy skin. The arancini, aka rice balls coated in breadcrumbs and fried, reminded me why they are one of my favourite comfort foods. Across the table, the risotto was winning

absolute raves. A combination of chicken, peas, pesto and asparagus was inspired, the rice was moist, rich and packed with flavour. There is no margin for error in a dish like this and chef’s timing was spot on. The relaxed atmosphere and low lighting makes fifty50’s restaurant a perfect place to unwind and do a spot of people watching and dessert was a suitably relaxed affair. The strawberry cheesecake was light and tangy with fruit and had a crisp biscuit base. Chocolate brownie, swimming in a sea of salted caramel sauce and topped with a scoop of ice-cream, was perfect for anyone who likes to end their meal with a sugar rush. So what are the odds that we’ll be giving Boston Spa’s latest dining establishment another go? Much better than fifty50...

Deliciously San Carlo You’ll find fantastically fresh flavours and more at San Carlo this spring.

I

f you’re looking for a meal full of sophisticated Italian charm, the highest quality of foods combined with perfect attention to detail, then San Carlo in Leeds ticks all the boxes. Bringing wonderful Italian cooking flair and vibrancy to the UK, the family-run team offers the very best in authentic eating from il bel paese, and with a track record of delighting customers for 30 years, San Carlo has gained a reputation for food that’s hard to resist. This is a team of people who recognise the delights of simple dishes made with the best ingredients. Among the wide selection of food on offer, there’s Pasta Alla Norma (the most popular pasta dish

in southern Italy with aubergines, tomatoes, basil, garlic all topped with pecorino cheese); a mouth-watering Mixed Shellfish ‘Royale’ – a plate zinging with flavour thanks to giant prawns, scallops and mussels, and for the meat lovers – Agnello Alla Toscana (lamb cutlets in Madeira sauce with rosemary and sun dried tomatoes). All dishes are masterminded by chef consigliere, Aldo Zilli. It’s not just the food that’s impressive – San Carlo Leeds boasts a supremely stylish, light and airy interior, as well as a striking iced seafood display set behind a beautifully hand-crafted marble bar imported from Italy. Along with a full team of Italian staff bringing the atmosphere and sounds of the country, you’ll be guaranteed an all-round authentic European experience – and all without breaking the bank too. With warmer climes on the way (hopefully on our bank holidays), come and dine al fresco at their second restaurant in

Leeds, Flying Pizza in Roundhay. Sit outside in the sun and imagine yourself in Italy and choose from our large variety of mouthwatering delicacies including Garganelli Salsiccia and Porcini (special egg pasta with a spicy sausage specially imported from Calabria with porcini mushroom and a light tomato sauce). It’s an experience that will delight all the senses. NS Eating Out

Out for a duck! Chris Wilson discovers a taste sensation in a whole section of the Bombay Brasserie’s menu devoted to the humble water fowl.

A

long with millions of others all over the country, I tend to play safe and order old favourites whenever I eat in an Indian restaurant. It’s ridiculous really, especially when you consider that here is a style of cuisine blessed with more variety than most, with a huge number of herbs and spices being used in a wide number of dishes. There is probably more diversity on your typical Indian restaurant menu than with any other style of cooking, but every weekend the same old reflex kicks in. We know what we love, so why risk disappointment? When the crunch comes, even a cursory glance at the menu is not necessary – the same starter, main course and side dish as last time please... and a pint of lager. It’s understandable, but if you are going to get the most out of the restaurant experience, an open mind and a sense of adventure is called for. So when I noticed something very different on offer at the Bengal Brasserie in Wetherby, I knew in a flash it was time to try something new. A whole section devoted to duck dishes? Now this was definitely something completely new to me, and I’ve eaten in a lot of curry restaurants. So duck tikka massala it was, and I have to say this dish was a bit of a revelation. Strips of tender duck breast were served in a curry sauce with a chilli kick. Now this is a very rich meat, which is why it’s often served in bistros with a sharp, bitter sauce of plum or orange. It turns out that a punchy curry sauce containing lightly braised onions, garlic, ginger, tomatoes and fresh green chillies works just as well, if not better, when it comes to countering the richness of that luscious duck breast. This was a fantastic curry; a dish I will definitely return to.

NS • page 50

Side dishes were also up to the mark. Pilau rice was light and fluffy, naan bread was warm, freshly made and perfect for soaking up that rich curry sauce. Sag aloo, a spicy mix of potato and spinach, was probably a side dish too far but ordering too much food is another Indian tradition that is hard to break. While I was breaking new culinary ground, my dining companion was taking comfort in a familiar favourite. The Bengal special mixed byriani was a very generous mixture of chicken tikka, lamb tikka and king prawns cooked with basmati rice in the traditional way and served with a vegetable curry. It doesn’t look like the most elegant plate of food, but it was packed with flavour.

We had started our meal with lovely crisp pappadums and the pickle tray, followed by a shared starter, the Bengal special combo. This was a delicious mixture of chicken tikka, onion bhaji, lamb chop, prawn chotpati, and nehar e kebab, the latter dish being a mixture of cooked potato, red lentils and coriander coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried. This was a very satisfying meal and the classy, relaxed setting added to our sense of wellbeing. Service is spot on and the leatherbound menus and distressed leather chairs add a touch of style. Do pay Bengal Brasserie a visit, to break those old habits and try something different… you won’t be disappointed.

NS Interview

Creating perfection From creating beautiful homes to planning dazzling weddings, Leedsbased designer Ben Huckerby brings his own distinctive, awardwinning style to a variety of projects. Fiona Barber reports.

R

enowned interior designer Ben Huckerby has worked on some of the most beautiful venues in London, LA and the south of France. He describes his style as classical-contemporary, cosy-opulence – think Malmaison but better. So how did a local lad climb the plush carpeted staircase of success and win the public’s vote for designing Britain’s Best Home? It seemed a creative career had always been on the cards for Ben, who is from Millthorpe near Holmesfield. He completed an arts foundation at Chesterfield College and then went on to study interior architecture at Leeds Metropolitan. Like many students, Ben had planned to finish his degree, save up and go travelling. But a dream opportunity to renovate a run down castle near Halifax came up – a project too good to pass on – so Ben completed his final year juggling university work with the renovation of Carr Hall Castle. The mock 18th century castle, which was transformed into a contemporary folly with striking soft furnishings, won a public vote ahead of seven other houses in the final of the Channel Five programme ‘I Own Britain’s Best Home’, declaring it Britain’s Best Home 2008. Although Ben has also been awarded titles such as Concept For Living’s Favourite Living Space and Best Interior in the Leeds Bar and Club Awards, he says Britain’s Best Home was an extremely prestigious title to receive. “It’s a great accolade because it’s voted for by the public, which made it more important than if a panel of judges had decided the winner.” After Carr Hall Castle was complete and the design work died down, Ben spent a stint in property management. “They (Terry and Michael) have around 20 houses, so I managed those for a while but it wasn’t for me. From that I started doing one day a week working for myself and the design work spiralled from there.” Ben Huckerby Design was established in 2005 in Leeds and consists of Ben, office manager Tracy Fitzpatrick and interior designer and technical drawer Kyle Minnock. They offer a full interior design service and project management, including planning and landscaping of bespoke concepts and fabric

sourcing. Their impressive portfolio includes a huge range of residential, commercial, leisure, landscaping and events. “We’ve done bars and clubs, karaoke bars, and anything from quick apartment makeovers with furniture, to completely redesigning venues. I prefer the bigger projects because you can really put your stamp on them.” The company has recently taken on the

task of renovating Leeds Bradford Airport’s business and elite lounges. “The client came to us because they loved our style and the way we design.” Ben says he loves that he gets to do something he’s passionate about and that two days are never the same – one day he can be chairing an architectural meeting then the next he could be creating floor plans for weddings.

One of Ben’s recent design projects: BEFORE

AFTER

Although having incredible taste is key to being a successful interior design career, really getting to know the customer’s lifestyle and how they use the house is essential to getting the best results. “Using a questionnaire often results in closed answers. I get a much bigger picture about the client’s lifestyle and what the home requires when I sit down with them in a relaxed environment with a glass of wine and have an informal discussion.” The bespoke service that BHD provides goes far further than just new sofas and worktops and they are particularly known for their personalised touches like custom-made wine holders. It’s clear that Ben loves what he does and feels it’s incredibly rewarding to see a finished scheme. “Clients can leave us in the morning with a room full of boxes, then come back at the end of the day and we get to reveal the big wow factor.” But it’s not just about making an impression; a house should flow from room to room, and the garden should flow with the house too, with the same feel and style. “People want other people to walk into their

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

house and say ‘this is beautiful’. It represents an extension of themselves.” There are many designers trying to break into the industry and Ben admits it can be difficult. “It’s so subjective and a lot of people try to work from home, but it means there’s no showroom and it’s difficult to engage people without that visual aspect.” As an established designer Ben also knows how important it is to stay at the cutting edge of design and takes inspiration from other designers and elements that crossover from the fashion industry like trends, colours and textures. Ben doesn’t follow trends because he believes the most important thing is longevity of a project. He advises keeping the high cost items like floors and wall coverings neutral, and then adding pops of colour with

things that are easy to change, like cushions. Despite this, he particularly admires the Arab influence and visits hotels – especially in Dubai – to stay up to date with any new designs and take influence from a place where money seems to have no limits. As the design side of business booms, Ben has also found himself becoming involved with organising events and planning weddings for clients. “This was born out of being asked to organise house-warming parties, so we would look after catering, a DJ and make sure the house looks great. I’m a perfectionist in everything I do.” Designer, property management, wedding planner, events manager – is there anything this man can’t do? Trying to juggle so many plates would be impossible for most, but Ben seems to revel in it. At the heart of it all his love of interior design shines brightest. “I just want to deliver projects and schemes that are bespoke, classically modern with opulence.”

Inspirational designs If you’re in the market for a new kitchen, it’s time to spring into action with a trip to Four Seasons Interiors.

C

hoosing a new kitchen is an exciting prospect but it is also one of the most difficult and expensive purchases you will ever make. Sometimes it is hard to know where to start or who to put your faith in. However, after trading for 26 years and building up a respectable reputation, you can confidently put your trust in Four Seasons Interiors. As one of the longest established kitchen businesses in Leeds, they’re clearly doing something right. Managing director Ian Sandford says: “Four Seasons has survived two recessions and earned buyers’ confidence over the years, so I think we are a resilient company. In fact, the majority of our business comes from word-of-mouth recommendations and returning customers.” Ian believes it is important to continually reinvest in the business and, as a result, the remarkable displays change every few years. Four Seasons has recently undergone a massive refurbishment, which saw half of the showroom renovated and reorganised, and the other half will be updated in the summer. An impressive display by British manufacturer Callerton currently dominates the front of the showroom, while designs by high-end German brand Häcker are sure to grab your attention. The new displays feature working appliances from the likes of Siemens, Miele and AEG, which you can see in action at one

of Four Seasons’ regular cookery demonstration evenings. But it isn’t just their products that Four Seasons invest in. Now is a very exciting time for showroom manager Donna Fox, who is being sponsored by the company to do a foundation degree in kitchen design. The three-year qualification from Buckinghamshire New University is the first of its kind in the country and Donna will be one of the few fully-accredited kitchen designers in the UK, as there are only 12 people on the course. She says: “It is a commitment juggling 2030 hours of studying a week with a full-time job, but it is so interesting to learn about indepth design concepts from the best industry experts, architects, designers and technicians. “The industry has been crying out for this qualification for such a long time, as you need to know so much about design, regulations, management, sales and customer service to do this job well.” Donna joined Four Seasons as a junior

kitchen designer in 2011 and since then she has developed her skills on the job. This qualification will give her the opportunity to specialise in her field as well as having longterm benefits for the showroom, as it will set Four Seasons apart from competitors and establish them as an industry innovator. As the business continues to go from strength to strength, Ian and Donna have also recently welcomed two new members of staff. Dean is a designer with ten years’ industry experience, while design technician Liam has recently completed a degree in furniture design. “It is great to welcome new designers who bring fresh ideas and bags of enthusiasm to the business,” says Donna. “Working with such talented individuals, there are no design constraints and we all have the freedom to develop our unique style. “Our broad spectrum of expertise enables us to create something truly unique for our clients that suits their lifestyle and needs. As we continue to evolve and reinvest in the business, we aspire to deliver the very best service and inspire our customers.” When it comes to designing and installing kitchens, Four Seasons Interiors offer expert advice, inspirational designs, value for money and a high-class finish that guarantees you will be content for many years to come. SPOT THE DIFFERENCE... Colin and Liz Crichton’s living room before (below) and after (right) a consultation with Boconcept

Get some inspiration Perfect solutions for individual homes – that’s our concept, says Jessica Herman, interior design consultant at Boconcept.

S

ince Boconcept started in 1952, there has been a long tradition of creating high quality design furniture at affordable prices, for people who love design and energy in all aspects of their lives. For our new 2015 collection we have made every effort to coordinate colours and materials so that everything goes well together, and you have all the choices you need to suit your style. It’s why we meticulously consider every piece, every little detail, line and function so you can be sure it works perfectly in your home. That’s where our free home design service really comes into its own. By visiting customers in their own homes and working with any existing furniture they may have, we can help people really see the potential in their spaces. Our objective is to achieve a design that works for you according to your tastes and needs. As interior design consultant, I have been with Boconcept here at Redbrick Mill just over a year, but in that time have already built up a loyal customer base. I have been able to create solutions for customers homes, which have transformed their spaces and rooms and

NS • page 60

helped them to realise the true potential they have. An example of my latest work was for customers Colin and Liz Crichton, who live in Harrogate. They had come to Boconcept to get some inspiration for their front living room as they were having trouble narrowing down all the options and pulling the look together. I mentioned the free home visit service may help them get a clearer picture, which they agreed would help. “Colin and Liz wanted a relaxing and cosy space for the adults to unwind in, some storage to display photos and an alternative solution to their current media system. After talking through certain styles and colours that they liked, I went away and drew their room on a 3D plan also including lights and rugs that they had seen in the shop. “When they came back into the store, I presented the room layout with them, and we talked over the various options because they could see how the room would look. By adding in the extra touches such as the lights, rugs and accessories they could finally see the room coming together. Between us we came up with a perfect solution that really works for them.”

Be beautiful It’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. Hannah Pearson has some top tips to get you started.

A

fter a long and chilly winter where snow fell as far as February, it’s hard to believe that spring is now just around the corner. The mornings are brighter, the days are longer and we’re starting to think about shaking off our woolly layers and getting back outside. But with this flurry of cheerful activity comes the harsh reality that we may have neglected our homes during those chilly months – which becomes apparent when we see our home in the natural sunlight. A layer of dust seems to have accumulated on every surface, the windows and roof have suffered from the lashings of rain, the garden path is overgrown with weeds – and how long has that stain been on the carpet? It looks vaguely like a mince pie. The time has come to spring clean! No one looks forward to the annual deep clean, but when the flowers start blooming you know it’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love your house can be beautiful again and have that fresh spring look. Follow these simple steps for a happier home.

NS • page 62

Check the roof With heavy rain, chilly snow and stormy winds up and down the country, your roof will have suffered a beating this winter. As spring approaches, it is essential to check that no serious damage has been done. This can be done yourself or, if the thought of climbing onto the roof leaves you feeling queasy, you can hire a professional roofer instead. If any tiles have been displaced, make sure you get them fixed now – you’ll be glad you did when the April showers arrive.

Clear drains and gutters The onslaught of rain we saw this winter will have washed fallen leaves straight into your gutters. If left untreated, clogged up drain pipes and guttering can cause flooding, so make sure you give them a thorough clearing out. Also, check for any cracks or wear and tear that might need fixing.

NS Home & Garden

Check windows Painting and wood-staining Winter storms can easily cause damage to your window insulation. Make sure you check for cracks and make repairs if necessary. Now is the perfect time to clean your windows too. Polish them inside and out so you can make the most of when the sun starts shining.

Torrential rain can cause layers of paint to slowly fade away, so now is the time to make everything look brand new by giving your outdoor surfaces a lick of paint. Think about staining wood surfaces too. Fences, gazebos, tables, chairs – they will all benefit from a new coating ready for the summer.

Tidy up exterior

Flowers

Create a fantastic first impression at the impending summer parties by sprucing up the front of your home. Remove any weeds that may have grown across your path, give your front door a good clean, change outdoor light bulbs, tighten wobbly gates or railings and add some plant pots, hanging baskets or a new welcome mat to the entrance of your home.

Spring is all about adding a splash of colour back into our lives – and what better way to spruce up our home and garden? It may still be a little chilly, but now is the time to get planting so that your garden will be a stunning array of springtime colour. Indoor plants and vases of fresh flowers will bring the natural beauty indoors.

De-clutter After months of children and pets playing indoors, your house is probably in serious need of clearing out. It’s impossible to thoroughly clean surfaces and cupboards with a winter’s worth of clutter on top of them, so it’s time to be brutal – either find a suitable place for it, or throw it away. Make some extra money by selling unwanted items online, host a car boot sale or donate to your local charity shop.

Clean ceiling fans If you have a ceiling fan, it probably won’t have been used over the winter months. If you don’t remember to clear away the thick layer of dust that will have settled on the blades you will get an unpleasant surprise when you turn them on. Give them a good scrub to avoid circulating dust throughout your home.

Go green It’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon and start making your home as eco-friendly as possible. Energy-saving features make houses cheaper to run and are a good investment financially, socially and environmentally. Look out for solar powered products, energy-saving light bulbs, home energy monitors that track your usage, eco-kettles, energysaving toasters and standby gadgets to save energy and cash.

Garden

Clean upholstery and update furnishings

With the coming of spring, thoughts turn to our gardens. But if the prospect of landscaping fills you with fear, keep it simple. See your garden in a whole new light by rearranging your plants or purchasing some new garden furniture or accessories. Pressure-wash your decking or patio and bring outdoor furniture out of storage for a good clean. Although we’re still a few months away, there’s no harm in giving the barbecue a good scrub before the summer party season begins.

Fire up the vacuum and get rid of all the dust that will have accumulated on your sofas and chairs. If you gave your home a seasonal makeover at the beginning of winter, now is the time to pack away the throws and thick curtains and replace them with light furnishings and colourful accessories. Wash your pillows, duvets and curtains and get someone to help you flip your mattress.

The question of reasonable financial provision is raised by Irwin Mitchell’s Paula Myers.

Inheritance Act changes

A “A number of cases have increased enormously for spouses, generally women in a second marriage scenario who are left in conflict with adult children from the previous marriage or relationship.” NS • page 68

t Irwin Mitchell we have seen a dramatic increase in cases involving claims against estates where we have to ask the Court to re-write a will in order to make sufficient and reasonable financial provision for a client who has not been properly provided for. Sometimes this happens quite unexpectedly. The number of cases has increased enormously for spouses, generally women in a second marriage scenario who are left in conflict with adult children from the previous marriage or relationship. In these circumstances, the children will expect to receive their inheritance or what they believe they are entitled to; the spouse can sometimes be left with a share of the estate which is not sufficient enough for them to live on, or which dramatically impacts their lifestyle. It is often tax efficient to leave a life interest for the spouse so that she has a roof over her head and an income from the estate or trust. This also means that the children would then inherit in a tax efficient way on her death. This does not work so much if there is a relationship where there is an age difference between spouses and where the second wife is similar in age to the children

from marriage number one. However, we often see scenarios like this which may sound perfectly reasonable in practice but only so long as the choice of trustee is correct. Too often, a father will want to please everyone and so will grant his children access to the purse strings by appointing them as trustees. This can leave spouses feeling unnecessarily controlled or restricted and find that their life interest and conditions to remain living in a property are all too onerous without any freedom to live their lives. We have dealt with cases where the trustees have not properly looked after the spouse or they have delayed in making payment in order to make matters difficult. We have also dealt with cases where there has been a close and civil relationship during lifetime but this has changed as soon as money and assets are discussed after death. If you are in this position, we have vast experience of dealing with inheritance act claims and can offer a range of funding options. This option is also available to cohabitees, people maintained by the deceased, adult and minor children. ww.irwinmitchell.com

No secret to success What has made Buywell Interiors thrive over the last 15 years? We sent Stephanie Burns to find out.

I

t’s been more than 15 years since Simon and Michelle Procter established their popular fitted kitchen and bedroom showroom on Thorp Arch Retail Park. But just what has made Buywell Interiors thrive over the years? The answer lies in quality products, excellent customer service and a personal touch that only an independent, family-run business can deliver. With this trio of skills – and interest free credit to boot – it’s little wonder that repeat business and word-of-mouth recommendations make up a significant proportion of their customer base. There’s nothing like glowing testimonials from friends and family to convince you that a company is right for the job, after all.

The spacious showroom houses a number of displays, many of which showcase British products and designs at their finest. From ultra-modern to classic or traditional, there is something to suit every taste. Should tight corners and awkward spaces be a problem, their bespoke bedroom service offers workable solutions for when a standard fit just won’t do. Pushy sales tactics are left at the door as customers are warmly welcomed by Michelle before being left to browse the selection in their own time. However, if you need assistance, help will be at hand in an instant. “We really want to encourage people to shop locally and support independent business,” says Michelle. “We appreciate that a new fitted kitchen or bedroom is a big

purchase and that’s why it’s so crucial that customers feel confident with who they’re dealing with. For us, customer service is one of the most important aspects of our business.” With a full design and installation service available, you’ll deal directly with Buywell Interiors from start to finish. Once you have had a chat with Michelle in the showroom, Simon will visit you at home to conduct a comprehensive site survey, discuss your ideas and expectations in detail and create a 3D design that will turn your dreams into reality by allowing you to see exactly how your new fitted kitchen or bedroom will look. Continuing the same high standards of service, Buywell Interiors’ fitting teams will complete the installation of your new kitchen or bedroom in an expert, friendly and tidy manner. If you require an extension or other building work then the full project management service can take care of every aspect of the job. While online browsing appears to offer a convenient way to shop, there’s nothing like seeing the products in person. To see the displays, discuss your ideas and get a feel for the standard of quality you can expect from Buywell Interiors, visit the showroom today. LIVE WELL. BUY WELL. Red Nose Book Day charity success Pupils at Gateways School in Harewood combined World Book Day with Red Nose Day to create Red Nose Book Day, raising funds for both Comic Relief and St Gemma’s Hospice. The day was organised and run by pupils in Year 9 as part of their Archbishop of York Young Leaders’ Award. Children at the school donated money to dress up as characters from literature. Within the high school, all forms were given a theme, ranging from Mr Men and Little Miss to Jesus and the 12 disciples. The pupils organising the event made sure there was something for everyone, as well as plenty of opportunities for donations. There was a very popular bake sale at first break, reading activities in the library and a literary treasure hunt for the Prep School. The highlight of the day was the ‘I’m a Celebrity’-style competition entitled ‘I’m a teacher, get me out of the PAC’. Pupils were given the chance to vote (via donation) for the teachers who they wanted to see compete in the challenge. The selected teachers agreed to face elimination through a range of challenges including a book obstacle course, finding stars in buckets of spider-infested slime, and an eating challenge involving some interesting flavours of jelly bean! The day’s activities raised an outstanding £820, split equally between the two charities.

Oakwood Day to restore clock Oakwood Day 2015, which is organised by OTRA (Oakwood Traders and Residents Association), will celebrate the return of the newly restored Oakwood Clock on 2 May. The event will take place 12-9pm in the area surrounding the clock, with the Lord Mayor officially unveiling the clock at 1.30pm. For the past two years, local residents have been fundraising to ensure that the clock will be present for future generations to enjoy. The Heritage Lottery Fund as well as generous donations from Marilyn and Graham Stowe and many local residents have helped to raise the funds for the restoration of the clock. There’ll be local musicians, local artisan stalls, food stalls, a bar by Preston Bar, a wide variety of kid’s activities including face painting, and the chance to have your photo taken in the Oakwood clock photobooth. An open air cinema ‘experience’ will also take place in the evening. Visitors will be able to leave memories of the clock and the day in a visitor’s book. A time capsule will be buried at the base of the clock by the first chair of OTRA, Roger Williams, and will contain contributions from local schools and residents, not to be reopened until 2112. Engraved paving slabs bought by local residents will also be unveiled. For more information, visit www.loveoakwood.co.uk.
