TRAVEL

The beautiful island of Miyajima is home to the Itsukushima shrine

For all seasons JAPAN IS A STUNNING PLACE TO VISIT, AT ANY TIME OF YEAR. pen a world map and you will see the extensive Asia/Pacific region. Almost at the very centre you will see the Japanese archipelago stretching north to south along the edge of the Asian continent. Japan has lured untold number of adventurers since Marco Polo first introduced it to the world back in the 13th century as “Zipangu – the Land of Gold”. Though the Japan of today may not be a land of gold, the “Neo Zipangu” does possess powerful and magnet-like attractions: great cultural variety, colourful and inspiring natural attractions beautifully interwoven by

O

Cherry blossom and a snow-covered Mount Fuji

four distinct seasonal changes, not to mention the overflowing hospitality of its people. As such Japan has recovered from the natural disasters of 2011 and is vigorously gaining in popularity as a tourist destination again which anyone can enjoy on a reasonable budget and with a sense of complete security. This is where the past literally greets the future. This is where they both mingle. Japan has a long history of absorbing advanced cultures from ancient times through the middle ages. Later it began to assimilate elements of western civilisation from the latter half of the 19th century. Through these influences, the country has added rich new dimensions and depth to its indigenous culture. This marvellous harmony between the refinements of everything ‘Oriental’ blended with leading edge technology and the urban lifestyle you find in Japan today is truly proof of its long and eloquent history.

The Seasons No other country has the contrasting seasons that Japan enjoys. If you are undecided when to visit Japan, 20 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

spring is spectacular when the plum and cherry blossom trees burst into bloom. From the first days of February when the plum blossoms debut in Okinawa, to the last days of May, when the last cherry blossoms fall from the trees of northern Japan, spring is a time of rebirth in the name of nature and human celebration throughout the land with numerous flower festivals being held everywhere. Spring is one of the most popular times to travel and planning and booking early is imperative. Summer is playtime in the land of nature, a season of rice planting and total greenery, summer is a season for visiting Mount Fuji, enjoying the fireworks almost every night and the large scale festivals that will linger through into September, but by October Japan is enjoying the crisp cooler days of its distinct autumn. Autumn brings swirls of changing leaves, vivid hues of crimson, gold, bronze and yellow that paint the hills and mountainsides in carpets of colour, a wonderful time to visit. The Momji maple tree turning a blazing red is not to be missed. Winter offers not only snowfall – a skier’s paradise – but sunshine and blue skies as well as cheaper prices and a quieter time to travel.

TRAVEL

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: Okayama Castle; Nachi Waterfall; Nara Deer Park; Sagano

The Journey Start your journey in Tokyo, the most exciting metropolis in Asia where traditions from centuries past exist side by side with the ever-moving elements of the latest in urban culture that radiate their own special heat and energy. Most of the clichés are true. Tokyo is neon-wrapped, a hectic playground where trains are never late, vending machines are everywhere, but amid the bright signs and adverts there is also a Zen-like calm, often just a few steps away from the chaos. There is no real centre to Tokyo rather it has sub centres, connected by the circular Yamanote train line. It takes under three hours on the 200mph bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, an area spared from the air raids of WW2. On the journey you can visit Hakone, an area of natural beauty and UNESCO site and then Mount Fuji, Japan’s spiritual home. Since the mountain is covered in snow most of the year, the official climbing season is limited to July and August. The climb is worthwhile but not easy; a saying goes there are two kinds of fools; those that never climb Fuji and those

that climb it twice. Arriving in the ancient capital for 1,200 years, Kyoto has numerous shrines, temples, palaces and villas, repositories of Japan’s long history, while up in the low mountains that enclose the city, small villages huddle under forested slopes, offering fascinating glimpses of rural life. You will still find geishas in the old Gion district, kimono weavers, sake breweries and numerous craftsmen and storekeepers who carefully maintain the old ways and keep alive the flame of Japan’s traditional culture. From Kyoto you can visit Nara for its parks, temples and museums. While travelling you will feel safe, women can walk safely alone almost anywhere and it’s not unusual to see children riding the subway alone whilst sleeping on trains seems to be a national pastime. Many belongings have been lost only to find them returned intact the very next day. If you travel further south, you’ll find yourself in Hiroshima, a city re-emerged from the atomic bombing, the peace flame burns in front of the memorial cenotaph, never to be extinguished until all nuclear weapons are abolished. A short distance from Hiroshima is the beautiful island of

Miyajima, home to the Itsukushima shrine, a must-see for all standing alone in the sea. The Shinto shrine is a world heritage site as is known as one of the ‘three views of Japan’. Miyajima island is a romantic place, best enjoyed staying overnight at one of the islands ryokans, a traditional Japanese inn. Numerous superb hot spring resorts, known as ‘onsens’, are in fact ryokans built on the site of a hot spring. There are some 55,000 ryokans in Japan; a room in a ryokan will usually contain an undivided room floored with tatami matting, while sleeping on a ‘futon’ bedding laid out by maids and a traditional evening meal and breakfast. Make the beautiful island of Okinawa your final stop, the perfect chance to relax on a beautiful beach, sub-tropical coral reefs, emerald seas, sunny skies and tropical vegetation abound. There are more than 150 islands stretching a chain of 250 miles. There is no litter and no bins either, this is always taken home. This is an example of the remarkable social cohesion that Japan enjoys intertwined with its heart-warming hospitality makes it such a pleasant place to live and to visit. Japan awaits you… Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 21

CAFE CULTURE HANNAH SANDERS MEETS JACK SIMPSON, THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE HYDE PARK BOOK CLUB. eeds’ most eclectic creative arts hub, Hyde Park Book Club has recently celebrated its second anniversary. Two years on, Hyde Park Book Club has come a long way from being a cosy café in 2015 to now hailing as a live music and arts space across two floors, with a café serving plant-protein brunches and burgers from the world’s first plant butcher, The Vegetarian Butcher, a bottle shop selling locally sourced beers to drink in or takeaway and a book shop with an exclusive section dedicated to classic and contemporary Yorkshire writers. Owner Jack Simpson talks about how the venue came to life, birthday celebrations and his plans for the future.

L

How did Hyde Park Book Club start?

I've worked in music and arts since the early 2000s, running a ‘zine, events, putting out 24 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

records. I've always liked helping facilitate cultural goings-on, and Hyde Park Book Club seemed like a good chance to do that. Though to be honest, we didn't really expect it to become as busy with events and other cultural goings on as it has – we thought were starting a coffee shop. Then there was just such a demand for space for parties and exhibitions that we gradually encroached further and further on the guys next door. Now there are two bars, two venue spaces and the main bar doubles up as an extra space sometimes.

on, all the events, the parties that started here and are now across Leeds, and in some cases the country. I’m also grateful for all the great staff and customers we've had. Which anniversary events stood out for you?

It was such a great week, with loads of good events and good people along. There were too many to pick anything, but we always love HalliGalli and the Crispy Aromatic guys. Chris O Connor's Life is Sketchy was also really good.

How does it feel to be celebrating two years?

What previous events have been memorable?

It's quite surreal really. I was living in London when we started and only came back because it was getting really busy. The two years have flown by, I feel really proud of all that's gone

But the early days of Soul Control / Plato's Disco / Glug Glug / Leftovers scene were great. Seeing a bunch of kids really having it and then going out into the world and

changing the feel of the city, that was cool. Alongside that, on the music side just seeing a room with some of the city's best writers, followed by film makers, artists, intellectuals. It makes me just feel really proud of everything we've done, all the work the staff have put in & that we've just done something that we'd love. You’re not only a live music and arts space but a cafe too. Tell me about the inspiration behind your menu, especially the plant-protein brunches and the burgers from The Vegetarian Butcher.

I've been vegetarian since I was a kid but nothing I've had comes close to this. Helen, our head of food and drink, does some amazing specials too, and always makes sure we've got an interesting drinks selection in. The menu being veggie was a no brainer for us. We knew that it could be a challenge but as Chris (partner) and I are vegetarian, we knew building the veggie culture was important. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 25

On Saturday 1 May, the festival draws to a close – but not before the Chicagoan Haley Fohr, of Circuit des Yeux, performs her reworked score for the 1923 film, Salomé. The film was shunned by studios at the time, both for its lewd story (Salomé dances for King Herod, her stepfather, and so entrances him with her physicality that he promises her anything – she asks for the head of John the Baptist), and the reportedly debauched house parties of Alla Nazimova, the film’s star. Circuit des Yeux’s ethereal combination of avant-garde electronics and finger-picked guitar, delivered in Fohr’s otherworldly voice, allows this glamorous Art Deco film to be re-invigorated, and celebrated as a cult classic. Commissioned by Opera North Projects for Leeds International Festival, catch Salomé in Leeds before Fohr takes the performance down to the Barbican, in London.

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE

Cheers, enthusiasm... and gruelling climbs THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE 2018, WHICH TAKES PLACE 3-6 MAY, LOOKS SET TO BE THE BIGGEST, BEST – AND TOUGHEST – YET, WRITES CAMILLA BROKENSHIRE.

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE

PROMOTION

A summer of cycling PLAN YOUR YEAR AHEAD WITH THE BEST RACES, RIDES AND ROUTES IN AND AROUND HARROGATE. he days are getting longer, the evenings warmer and the roads are almost dry – the best time of the year in cycling. But to make the most of the seemingly short Great British summertime and beyond, you need to look to explore some of North Yorkshire’s best races, rides and routes, whether on or off-road.

T

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE

The Tour de Yorkshire 2018 will start in Beverley on 3 May and finish in Leeds on 6 May. The fourth edition of the race sees it gain an extra day, with the Women’s tour also gaining a day, adding stage tactics and general classification consideration into what has already become a strongly contested title. The current title holder, Lizzie Deignan, claimed the jersey in Harrogate in 2017, and though sadly the women’s race won’t visit again in 2018, the men’s race will be presented with the serious challenge of Greenhow Hill in Nidderdale as part of the final stage. CYCLE EXPO YORKSHIRE

Harrogate is set to welcome 20,000 cycling enthusiasts as the spa town holds its first major cycle expo. Cycle Expo Yorkshire, the result of a joint venture between Welcome to Yorkshire and event specialist XSEM, will bring a number of races and competitions covering all cycling disciplines to Yorkshire Event Centre (YEC) on 12-14 October. 34 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

2019 UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

E-BIKES

For one week, the elite of world cycling will take to the roads of Harrogate in a final pursuit of glory, and the much-coveted Rainbow Stripes by being first across the famous finish line next to The Stray. Taking place from 22-29 September, The Worlds includes men’s, women’s and junior races, with Harrogate playing host to two circuit races, whilst other races will start in various locations across the county – announced at the end of 2018’s World Championships.

Speed and style through an innovative electric-assist motor, advanced electronics and sleek design – Specialized’s Turbo electric bike represents the full capabilities of the ebike revolution and is capable of achieving speeds of 15.5mph or 24.9km/h while you pedal.

CYCLE ROUTES

High mountains, steep downhills and rough terrain – at first sight, Harrogate, Ripon and Nidderdale may seem like a destination reserved for hard-core cycling – and sure, if you want a challenge, a range of serious cycle routes can help you with that, including the Tour de France Stage 1 route. But on the other hand, there’s a lot more to North Yorkshire than hair-raising peaks and thanks to a remarkably varied topography, even the more inexperienced cyclists among us can find suitable routes, including the recently opened Nidderdale Greenway.

HYBRID BIKES

Hybrid bikes are all the rage in urban and rural communities alike and Specialized boasts some of the best and most popular hybrid bikes the world has to offer. Consistent test winners and bestsellers in urban bike shops, the Specialized fitness range has something for everyone, from the beginner just setting out in the world of hybrid bikes to the commuter after a swift and stylish means of getting from A to B. Whatever your commuting questions or needs, head to Specialized Concept Store, Harrogate. The team are fully trained to help you every step of the way, all so that you can spend more time enjoying the great roads and cycle routes around North Yorkshire and beyond.

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE

ompetitive bicycle racing can be complicated to an unfamiliar eye. This beginner’s guide will steer you in the right direction, enhancing our appreciation of this exciting energetic event that showcases Yorkshire’s beauty in an invigorating way. The Tour de Yorkshire was broadcast to over nine million viewers in 2017, with two million people attending the viewing spots to offer cheers and enthusiasm. The event’s popularity is set to be even greater as this year’s race is shaping up to be “the best yet” says Julie Harrington, chief executive of British Cycling. Yorkshire’s most stunning landscapes will be showcased nationally and internationally, broadcasting to up to 180 countries worldwide. The culturally rich heritage sites, market towns and historic locations unify those born and bred in Yorkshire with the visitors – as a sense of pride and curiosity shapes the same awe; proven by 2016’s winner Tommy Voeckler who said he “fell in love” with Yorkshire. Going through 43 towns and villages, over 50 per cent of the cities and towns are new to the tour; these locations will have the chance to showcase their brilliance in hosting the event and placing themselves on the sporting and tourism maps. With a broader understanding of how the tour positively affects local amenities, its impact on the cyclists who take part and its brief but developing history should allow a newcomer’s mind to be open to a deeper appreciation of the Tour de Yorkshire. 2018’s race is spread over four days instead of three, giving an extended opportunity to see the racing up front as well as more exposure to the county’s idyllic spots. There is wider scope for varied terrain, protracted scale and assorted climbing points to challenge some of the world’s best cyclists. In total, there are around 7,800 metres of total climbing range over the race’s 711 kilometres – a tougher challenge compared to last year’s race. Julie Harrington added: “Britain’s appetite for seeing world-class cycle sport has never been healthier and the people of Yorkshire can make a strong claim to be among the country’s biggest bike lovers.” The race takes the format of four stages over four days. Each stage spans different areas of Yorkshire and includes an array of challenges. The trail is altogether different to the previous years, seeing an increase in scope and intensity. Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said the team who plotted the route “worked hard to design a dramatic and varied parcours which takes in some of our county’s most spectacular terrain”.

efinitions for various cycling techniques, terms and descriptions can help differentiate concerning aspects of the race. To get to grips with this, here’s a short explanation of some key words you are likely to hear repeatedly during the Tour.

The Peloton The peloton is the name given when referring to the group as a whole. It involves a “principle rider”, the individual chosen for steering the group, and is a high functioning pack group of cyclists working together – giving individuals the chance to conserve energy as well as drafting and slip-streaming their way through the race. When watching the cyclists race, they seem similar to a pack of birds in flight, however the individual still faces various setbacks that can be determined by other factors such as weather and change in altitude or track type. As a group in the ‘peloton’ will be how cyclists continue through their whole journey along the track – breaking for individual tactics described below.

The Winner Not all cyclists will be riding for personal glory. Cyclists partake in the Tour de Yorkshire in teams as well as individuals, with aims of achieving the strongest rider of that team, showing highest qualities in sportsmanship as well as demonstrating the largest amount of effort across all four stages of the race. The rider completing stages one to four in the quickest time is crowned the winner of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Leader, Sprint, Digital & King of the Mountain These names refer to the jerseys according to the riding style. In spirit of the digital age we

live in, the Digital jersey is voted for by fans via Twitter and given to one individual who ticks a few boxes such as highest amount of sportsmanship and effort made whilst The King of the Mountain quite simply is the winner of those mountain climbs on route. The Leader is awarded to the first to cross the finish line in stage one, and the winner across all four stages. The Sprint is given to the rider accumulating the most points; first place coming in at 20 points.

‘Lead-out Trains’ & Sprints A lead-out train is a tactic involving the team working together to allow the units lead sprinter to push towards the front of the pack so they can leave the team to push towards a sprint. The streamlined individuals go forth and pursue the fastest lane possible for achieving the push. Sprints are high energy, fast-paced competitions, seeing cyclists breaking into two with a distinct race between the competitors.

Breakaways and attacks These two tactics are just as important as gaining speed as a cyclist. The ‘breakaway’ method describes a group of three to six riders attempting to put distance from themselves and the peloton, with the aim of heading towards the finish line first. The ‘attack’ takes place over the climbs; an individual with the aim of overtaking other riders with the aim of them falling behind.

Setting the pace for the pros FOLLOW IN THE TRACKS OF YOUR FAVOURITE RIDERS BY TAKING PART IN THE MASERATI TOUR DE YORKSHIRE RIDE, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. ancy yourself as the next Bradley Wiggins? Want to join thousands of amateur cyclists as they get the chance to ride key sections of the Tour de Yorkshire just hours before the pros? From Woodhouse Moor, Leeds and finishing on The Headrow, The Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride 2018 – the iconic and infamously tough legacy sportive of the Grand Depart 2014 – takes place on 6 May and is your chance to ride many of the same roads as the pros before they do, including the pro finish line, complete with support from the waiting crowds, just a few hours before the fourth edition of the Tour de Yorkshire reaches its gripping conclusion. Taking place on the same roads as 2014 Tour de France Stage 1, the event offers stunning cycling through the county, and with three distances available, there are routes suitable for all levels of ability: long (129km / 2059m of climbing), medium (84km / 1228m of climbing), and short (49km / 600m of climbing). The expert route designers have described the undulating route as “bringing new

meaning to the phrase, uphill and down dale”, and new for 2018, in partnership with Strava, there will be segment challenges on closed road sections at Greenhow Hill and Black Hill Lane, with King of the Mountain, Queen of the Mountain and Sprint jerseys up for grabs. Riders can also compare their times against the pros who will ride on the exact same stretch of road later in the day. Nick Rusling, CEO of the sportive organisers Human Race, says: “We say it every year, but the route this year is exceptionally tough – Yorkshire never fails. Cyclists will be tackling the same brutal climbs as the pros, and it’ll be made worthwhile when they cross the same finish line with the same roaring crowds. There’s no other UK sportive quite like it.” Cyclists will be supported with feed stations on the route, stocked with high performance energy products from nutrition partner Optimum Nutrition, and can expect to receive pre-ride and on course mechanical help from mobile bike mechanic solution, VonCrank. Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome

to Yorkshire, said: “What’s so fantastic about the event being in Leeds is that it makes it accessible for people to travel from across the UK and overseas to take part. The reason this event is so iconic is the pride and passion that the people of Yorkshire show whenever the eyes of the UK and the world are on our county.” James Cowan, marketing manager, Maserati GB, added: “We are proud to continue our involvement with the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride and return to Leeds where it all started back in 2015. The three routes each present challenges for the 2018 riders and we look forward to welcoming them over the finish line in May.” This event also makes a serious fundraising challenge, and there are still places available with the official charity partners, including Maggie’s, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Prostate Cancer UK, Alzheimer’s Society and Cancer Research UK. THE STAGES CAMILLA BROKENSHIRE LOOKS AT FOUR DAYS OF SPRINTS, CLIMBS AND STUNNING SCENERY.

Stage One

Stage Two

Stage length: 182km King of the Mountain Climbs: Côte de Baggaby Hill Sprints: Pocklington & Howden Highest ascent: 132.76m

Stage length: 149km King of the Mountain Climbs: Côte de Blacker Hill, Côte de Old Blacker Hill & Côte de Cow & Calf Sprints: Swinton Sprint Highest ascent: 251.9m

This year sees a change from the subsequent two years beginning in Bridlington; as the primary leg of the Tour de Yorkshire will start in Beverley and is set to arrive in Doncaster. The quaint market town, holding the impressive world-renowned Beverley Minister, will be a hotspot for tourists wishing to view the cyclists in the picturesque setting. Doing a loop from Beverley to Hornsea and back, the cyclists will have a chance to set their speed with the familiar setting to relay back to; beginning their path with a steady and straight route. The 16km loop will precede the first classified climb at Baggaby Hill, getting the legs pumping before a brisk descent into Pocklington for the opening intermediate sprint. The cyclists then pass through the Yorkshire Wolds then see an incline from Skidby to Kilnwick Percy – continuing to ramp up in speed, and the first challenge for the climbers of the group. The final leg of the first stage sees a fairly steady ending with no higher ascendance than 20.66m to allow the peloton to pick up speed. The pace set here will steadily ramp up again for a second sprint in Howden, climaxing in sweeping past the world-famous Doncaster Racecourse. Finishing on a flat out leg on the newly opened Great Yorkshire Way will be the final sight for the cyclists having finished the first stage.

An interest in heritage and castles shapes the second leg of the route, with Conisbrough Castle providing a stunning backdrop for the riders along the way. Shorter than the first stage of the tour, the second leg sees a decrease in ascent as well as length. 2018’s route is quite a change from last year’s Tadcaster to Harrogate, scoping new territory and allowing various new villages and town halls to be exposed in the festival-like celebration that supporters partake in. The peloton sweeps through Penistone – Yorkshire’s highest market town – after starting outside Barnsley’s remarkable Town Hall. Continuing on to Worsbrough allows the first mountains classification points to be up for grabs at Blacker Hill. After passing through Elsecar the first intermediate sprint takes place in Swinton. The cyclists will scout out the support from tourists, with nearly the whole course available to view, specifically a long stretch from Garforth to Ackworth with flagging spots. The peloton will then pass through Otley, home of cycling champion Lizzie Armistead, and Ilkley, two places familiar to those having raced in previous years. Stage two sees the end for the Womens Tour and the final leg of the journey for them as well as the men is the ‘savage’ Cow and Calf. The Cow and Calf will be the first ever summit finish of the Tour de Yorkshire, allowing the cyclists to confirm their stamina and willpower when tackling this point.

Stage Three

Stage Four

Stage length: 184km King of the Mountain Climbs: Côte de Silpho & Côte de Sutton Bank Sprints: Pickering & Morton on Swale Highest ascent: 287.75m

Stage length: 184km King of the Mountain Climbs: Côte de Hebden Bridge, Côte de Goose Eye, Côte de Park Rash, Côte de Greenhow Hill, Côte de Otley Chevin & Côte de Black Hill Road Sprints: Kilnsey Crag & Black Hill Road Highest ascent: 498.67m

Another increase in length from the previous stage, the third section of the race challenges riders to tackle mountainous Yorkshire terrain with a sharp incline between Thirsk, another beloved market town and home of James Herriot, and Sproxton. They then continue on towards a steep climb beginning towards Sutton, allowing the riders to progress out of Richmond’s cobbled market place and head to Catterick Garrison before the start flag is lowered. The peloton follows the route to cross Wensleydale and continue in an easterly direction at Leyburn, on to Morton on Swale where the first intermediate sprint will be fought out. Spots for supporters in Northallerton and Thirsk will then provide encouragement and cheer for the riders passing through which should push them on to combatting the intimidating Sutton Bank climb after crossing into the North York Moors. The first contenders over the top there will be rewarded with points in the mountains classification. The action then passes through Helmsley and on to Pickering for a second intermediate sprint. Climbers in the race will be starting to bear the beginnings of the climb on the Côte de Silpho before the race breezes into Scarborough for the first time. With the east coast close, the peloton sees the journey through to Filey, experiencing its picturesque seafront before heading inland and back towards inland Scarborough. To finish, the pacemakers will sweep along South Bay onto the now-legendary finish along North Bay after passing the iconic castle walls, seeing stage three ending in Scarborough.

The final instalment of the Tour de Yorkshire sees a return of an old favourite spectators viewing point, namely The Headrow in Leeds. The fact that it was the starting point of the 2014 Tour de France will conjure up a profound sense of competition and grandeur for those cyclists crossing the finish line. Before arriving here, the route goes through the first of six categorised climbs in stage four on the Côte de Hebden Bridge. The day begins with a steep and dramatic route up from Halifax, starting in the spectacular Piece Hall and continuing up north through the county. From Hebden Bridge through to the famous Haworth, home of the golden literary Bronte sisters; a profound area for competitors tourists and locals. The peloton will journey up the cobbled Main Street before dropping into Goose Eye for the next gruelling ascent. Haworth’s Main Street is a renowned hotspot for photos and tourist encouragement and the scene has been previously depicted by this year’s official artist Lucy Pittaway. Crossing from Brontë Country, the next climb is approaching on Barden Moor, before moving through Craven. Skipton then sees the peloton race through, before they move on to start the first intermediate sprint in view of Kilnsey Crag. The Côte de Park Rash provides gruelling territory for the peloton, which will no doubt continue its legacy as a brutal masterpiece. The route continues on to Masham and then into Nidderdale before making a return to the formidable Côte de Greenhow Hill for the first time since 2016. The undulating terrain never relents and shortly after passing through Otley, the next categorised climb is on the cards at Otley Chevin. To top it all off, Côte de Black Hill Road must also be surpassed before the race sweeps into Leeds and reaches a racing conclusion on The Headrow. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 39

A riot of colour LUCY PITTAWAY’S VIBRANT, CELEBRATORY IMAGES WILL TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE ONCE AGAIN, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. elcome to Yorkshire has named Lucy Pittaway as the race’s official artist for the third year running. Lucy beat off stiff competition to be awarded the title in 2016, and the partnership has flourished in the time since then. Her first commission ‘Hills, Dales and Woolly Tails’ was hugely popular with cycling fans and art aficionados alike and she followed this with ‘Pedals, Passion and Glory’ in 2017 which also proved a real hit. This year, instead of just creating one official print, Lucy has tasked herself with producing a series of five bespoke Tour de Yorkshire pieces which were unveiled at Welcome to Yorkshire’s flagship Y18 event at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre on 21 March. The prints have been created in Lucy’s signature style which involves blending soft pastels onto board by hand to create vibrant images which celebrate cycling, paying tribute to Yorkshire’s countryside and industrial townscapes. “I’m thrilled to be asked to be the official artist for the Tour de Yorkshire for a third successive year. With my home town of

Richmond being an official start, it makes this year even more special,” said Lucy. “Welcome to Yorkshire are so supportive and a great team to work alongside, and the challenge for me is even greater than in previous years as I’ve painted a collection of five official pieces. “I hope to create something that will be seen as a unique memento of an incredible race and spectacle in our region, and I am once again incredibly proud to be a little part of the event.” Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Lucy again and continuing our partnership. Her creations are always a joy to behold – bright, colourful and full of life – and we are in for a real treat this year with noless than five specialist pieces being produced. “The countdown for the Tour de Yorkshire is very much on now and we’re all working tirelessly to ensure the fourth edition on 3-6 May will be the biggest and best one yet.” For more information on Lucy Pittaway’s work visit www.lucypittaway.co.uk

incredible, and Daniel has taken every individual piece into consideration. I am a big fan of all things cycling and really looking forward to this year’s Tour de Yorkshire. It is great to be able to have this piece in The Chapel,” said Mark. In an interview with CycleEXIF (www.cycleexif.com) Daniel said: “In my latest project are some eye-catching symbols that are integrated in one piece. The symbols that you see, have, on one hand their own meaning and a sense of interpretation.

“I would say that the original interpretation of the symbols not just disappear but because of taking the symbols out of their classic context and are woven together, the relationship between the visual elements appear under new light.” For more information on The Chapel visit www.thechapelhg1.com and to see more of Daniel Bragin’s work visit www.rca.ac.uk/students/daniel-bragin Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 41

Weddings and Wills: Do you know the score? t’s something that tends not to feature prominently on the long list of wedding preparations: flowers, catering, invitations and music, make a new will… But did you know that getting married revokes your existing will? This means that you might be blissfully unaware that your will is invalid and consequently on your death your estate would pass under the intestacy rules rather than in accordance with your will. This issue was highlighted in the recent case of DMM. Mr DMM had a valid will which left his estate to his partner of 20 years and his three daughters. When he and his partner decided to get married, his daughters tried to prevent him from doing so on the grounds that he lacked mental capacity. One of his daughters had Power of Attorney for him in respect of his financial affairs and it was argued that he did not have sufficient understanding to enter into a valid marriage. The legal effect of getting married would be to revoke his existing will and his wife would receive much more of his estate under the intestacy rules than she would have got under the will. The court held that, whilst Mr DMM did not have capacity to change the provisions of the Power of Attorney, he did have capacity to marry. The judge noted that capacity to marry requires an appreciation of the fact that marriage will invalidate an existing will, and he found that in this case Mr DMM did understand that fact. By contrast, courts have previously found, (and this judge confirmed), that in determining mental capacity to marry, it is not necessary to understand what the financial consequences of divorce would be.

I

James Laycock, Partner in our Will Trust and Estate disputes team comments:

“Under the Mental Capacity Act, capacity is issue specific, so you might have capacity to do one thing but not another. In this case the expert brought in to assess Mr DMM thought that he did not have capacity to revoke the power of attorney made in favour of his daughter but he did have capacity to marry his long term partner. The test for whether an individual has capacity to make a will is slightly different again and we frequently see challenges to wills because it is asserted the testator did not have sufficient mental capacity for the will to be valid. Had it been an issue here, it may or may not have been found that Mr DMM had capacity to make a new will. However, the court’s conclusion that he had capacity to marry would automatically (assuming the wedding happened) substantially change the inheritance entitlements of his daughters and his proposed wife. Not many people appreciate that getting married will revoke an existing will. This point has been raised by the Law Commission in the recent consultation on wills and it has been questioned whether the law should be changed in this area. In any event, there should be greater awareness of this issue.” Contact James on DDI: 0113 3946 809 or phone: 0370 1500 100 Extension: 6809 james.laycock@irwiniitchell.com @WillDisputes_IM

Teresa Davidson, partner in our Family Law team comments:

“When considering getting married it’s worth thinking about the possible benefits of a prenuptial agreement, in particular because it offers greater certainty in the event the marriage breaks down. But while most people are aware that divorce can have significant financial implications and celebrity and high net worth divorces are highly publicised in the media, the impact of marriage and divorce on inheritance is much less talked about. Not only does marriage invalidate an existing will and confer new entitlements on each spouse, but the effect of divorce is that your former spouse is treated as having pre-deceased you – so any provisions in your will relating to your former spouse can no longer take effect. This may effectively render the will useless. It’s essential whenever you have a major life event that you take advice. Together with our colleagues across Private Wealth we offer our clients holistic and comprehensive advice about their circumstances so they can be prepared for whatever might follow.” Contact Teresa on DDI 0113 394 6762 or phone: 0370 1500 100 Extension 6762 teresa.davidson@irwinmitchell.com @IMFamilyLaw

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE OFF-DUTY DRESSING WITH MORGAN CLARE. he very exciting Tour de Yorkshire is coming up and we love this event. There is always lots going on around the local towns and it shouts about the best of Yorkshire to the rest of the country as well as, of course, giving us the opportunity to wear our most loved ‘off-duty’ outfit. We are in the era of “dressing-down is the new dressing-up”. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean looking scruffy or not put together. ‘Off-duty’ dressing simply means combining comfort and style in equal measure. This is largely thanks to the runways of the past few seasons where sweatshirts and boyfriend jeans have taken centre-stage. The Sweatshirt – once an item only worn around the house or to the gym – now it’s become a luxe statement piece we're willing to splash out on, whether it's a signature Bella Freud knit or an Acne logo hoody. There is nothing we would rather put on in a morning than the comfort of a super-soft sweatshirt. Some may think this item is too casual for everyday wear but the key to this look is to mix casual unstructured pieces with more tailored items for example put a wool coat over a hooded sweatshirt or a tailored 7/8 trouser or pleated midi-skirt with a sweatshirt and trainers. This way an outfit still has a stylish edge and will work for all ages. The Boyfriend jean can be an intimidating purchase first time round. But once you own a pair you will wonder how you ever lived without them. Like the sweatshirt the boyfriend jean is multi-functional. They can be worn dressed-down with your favourite kicks or dressed up with a sexy heel and silk blouse. You can buy them to fit like a true-boyfriend jean, loose on the hips and the leg, or there Citizens are a lot of more tapered styles which of Humanity are very flattering and slightly more Liya crop jeans, £330 fitted on the derriere and legs. Either way, they are our ultimate denim fit for this season. Theory

FOOD

LET’S EAT! IT’S TIME TO PREP OUR PALATES AND RELEASE OUR BELTS A NOTCH - THE LEEDS INDIE FOOD FESTIVAL IS BACK. he Leeds Indie Food Festival is back for its fourth year between 10 and 28 May. Showcasing the brightest names on the Leeds foodie scene as well as from further afield, LIF celebrates the independent providers bringing innovative tastes to a hungry city – and our mouths are already watering.

T

It’s not who you know, but what you eat

The Leeds Indie Food festival passport is the surefire way to make the most of the festival. For £11, passport holders get access to exclusive events, priority ticketing, deals at lots of independent venues across the city, and discounts on event tickets. What’s more, you can pick up a passport stamp for every LIF event attended, and prizes will be awarded for the most stamps. This year free merch is thrown into the equation too! With £1 from every passport sale going towards Action Against Hunger, tackling child malnutrition across 49 countries, a passport seems a great opportunity, overall, to both fill your belly and do some good. The exciting line-up has already seen passport-only events sell out, so you’ll need to get moving if you want tickets to some of these headliners… Gujurati flavours get smoked

Michelin-recommended stars Bundobust and Ox Club join forces with Drighlington’s fine dining hotspot Prashad for this exclusive collaboration. Gujurat-inspired vegetarian connoisseurs Bundobust and Prashad will combine their formal and informal takes on 54 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

the cuisine, throwing in Ox Club’s famous flair with fire, for some innovative and mouth-watering dishes on the 20 and 21 of May, when they create an evening menu of five courses and matching drinks (along with secret extras), for the lucky punters who grab tickets in time. Tickets cost £65, or £60 for passport holders. A mini-festival within a festival…

Eat North is back! Every weekend from 28 April, Leeds’ favourite food fair will be back at North Brewing Co, in Sheepscar. Just up the road from Leeds legends like The Reliance, expect a changing line-up of Leeds’ best pop-ups, alongside North Brew’s awardwinning beers. When Leeds Indie Food seems all but a dream, head to Eat North (free, and unticketed) to reawaken those taste buds, as this weekender will start in the festival and last all summer! Teaching grandmother to suck eggs…

Whitelock’s doesn’t need advice on making a great scotch egg – but the city’s oldest pub will team up with culinary co-conspirators from some of Leeds’ most highly rated venues to give that picnic classic a twist. From 10th28th May chefs from Ox Club, Bundobust and The Reliance will all bring their own take to this egg-stravaganza. Sorry… Keeping your ear to the ground

Leeds Indie Food is renowned for showcasing up-and-coming food trends. This year’s line-up

confirms a continued focus on waste, and also on great-tasting vegan food. Events like Junk Food Emporium’s Pay-AsYou-Feel supermarket and Food Waste Exposed – Ramen Pop-Up oppose a global waste culture. When 30-40 per cent of all food produced ends up wasted, yet one in nine people goes hungry, you know this is a serious global problem that must be faced. Veggie and vegan eating are high on the agenda, too. Leeds Indie Food’s first weekend coincides with Eat North’s monthly veggieonly weekender, and events like MorMor’s North African/Mediterranean veggie takeover, and Vegan Mexican Street Feast, grace the festival’s events pages. LIF might just prove that vegan food is just as exciting as meat, when tackled by masters… Besides all that, there are chocolatier courses, food styling events, one-off fine dining experiences and venue collaborations aplenty amongst the roster of amazing events. This year’s Leeds Indie Food is certainly not one to miss.

EATING OUT

Skip to it DYED IN THE WOOL LOCALS AND VISITORS ALIKE FLOCK TO THIS COSY COUNTRY PUB. PHOEBE SEYMOUR WENT TO SEE WHAT THE FUSS WAS ABOUT. at in a cosy, traditional, Yorkshire pub with exposed beams and sandstone brickwork, next to an open fire with a view of the green rolling hills in the distance, I felt my cares melt away… The Woolly Sheep Inn in Skipton, is a pub (or should that be baaa), restaurant and B&B located on cobbled Sheep Street, and pays homage to the fleecy flocks who once passed through this historical market town, right down to the labels on the toilet doors – ewes for the ladies and rams for the gentlemen, of course. But beyond the puns regarding all things fleecy, The Woolly Sheep is very serious about its food and ale offering. As well as a pub at the front and dining area at the back, this delightful gem has a surprisingly big beer garden – perfect for sunny days, but covered on this particular day. Being a Timothy Taylor pub, you’ll find six of the brewery’s refreshing ales, as well as a special guest ale. I’d brought my mum along, who ordered a half of Knowle Spring (£1.90), a 4.2 per cent, easy-drinking, blonde beer, named after the water source that bubbles beneath the Timothy Taylor brewery in Keighley. Going to a pub whilst on a detox may seem like a ridiculous idea, but thankfully,

S

56 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

there were plenty of non-alcoholic options to keep me on track. From the selection of mocktails, apple and raspberry (£2.10) was bright and fruity and made me feel as though I wasn’t missing out. The traditional pub menu also has plenty of vegetarian options too. I started with the homemade soup of the day (actually there were two), a thick and comforting roast butternut and lentil broth (£5), presented in a mini cauldron and served with a homemade warm bread roll. On the other side of the table, my mum was spreading generous knifefuls of smooth chicken liver parfait (£7) on toasted bread, topped with red currant, grape and port chutney. For mains, I had the roast red onion tartlet (£12.50) – pleasantly light and flaky squares of pastry topped with sweet onions and accompanied by chunks of courgette and drizzled in mouth-watering pesto and tomato ragu. Had I taken a wrong turn and flown to Italy? Carrying on the ale and sheep theme, my mum couldn’t resist the slow cooked lamb stew (£13), cooked in Timothy Taylor ale with smooth mash, root vegetables and sconesized dumplings. The scent of thick gravy and garlic buttered vegetables making their way over to me were amazing.

To finish, my banoffee cake (£6), a traditional British sponge served with caramelised bananas, and mum’s more continental milk chocolate and orange mousse (£5.50) once again proved this pub restaurant serves the best of both culinary worlds. After such a hearty meal, our only wish was that we could wander upstairs and have a nap in one of the 12 cushy and contemporary rooms. Whether you fancy a day trip to Skipton or an indulgent overnight stay, you’d be baaarmy not to give The Woolly Sheep a visit. Country classic THE FOOD AT GOLDSBOROUGH HALL LIVES UP TO THE STUNNING SETTING, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. he fact that Goldsborough Hall was derelict, overrun with vermin and destined for redevelopment rather than restoration, before current owners Mark and Clare Oglesby came to the rescue in 2005, is enough to send a shudder through any sensitive soul. Because to dine at this awesome 17th century house, now lovingly restored and transformed into a fabulous restaurant, hotel and wedding venue, is to escape for a few hours into a lovely, luxurious fantasy world of classic country house contentment. The stone lions guarding the entrance can rest easy… the philistines that allowed this classic house, famous in the 1920 as the former residence of HRH Princess Mary, almost to go to wrack and ruin, have been repelled. Restoration has been carried out with loving care, from the 12 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds to the sensitive fittings of an historic house that was built for entertaining. Dinner begins with drinks and canapes in the library, a gorgeous oak-panelled, highceilinged room with deep red leather sofas and a crackling wood fire. This is also the time to examine a menu, lovingly created by head chef Adam Thur, that wrestles maximum flavour from ingredients carefully collated from the kitchen garden and local suppliers. And while first impressions imply the candle-lit dining room retains a period theme, with white linen tablecloths, silver service and immaculately turned-out waiters complete with white gloves, the food itself is anything but a period piece. This is fine dining with a contemporary, cutting edge.

T

After restraining ourselves from overindulging on the stupendous selection of freshly baked bread, dinner began in earnest with white onion soup, a classic dish with a deconstructed twist. I was presented with a bowl of tarragon vinegar jelly with shards of crisp and charred onion. The soup, thick and rich with the consistency of bread sauce, was poured over the top. The jelly melted and brought a tangy sharpness to the whole, the onion retained its flavour and bite. Clever stuff. Across the table the tenderest, freshest seared scallops were given an equally inventive setting on a dish of kohlrabi, curry spices and bonito. This was not the only example of Asian flavours on the menu, and it worked spectacularly well here. For mains I chose Levan Farm duck, and again Chef looked to the east for inspration. The breast was poached and served with udon noodles, pak choi and a quail egg. Once again the plate was perfectly dressed and the most sumptuous savoury stock arrived separately. This was not just a trick of presentation, but a means of ensuring the immaculately tender duck retained its texture en route from kitchen to table. Even by candlelight this was a stunningly attractive plate of food, with flavours to match. Our second main, pork fillet with devilled kidney and hock croquette, was another triumph. The pork was served slightly pink, “quite daring” declared my companion, but the rewards came in moist and tender morsels of a cut that is so lean it can often be dry and stringy. The croquette, creamy mash flecked with ham hock in a crispy shell, was a classic example of comfort food.

To finish, we shared a pudding of banana bread, caramelised banana, toffee ice cream and spiced rum. This was creamy, crunchy and chewy by turns, a delicious coming together of textures in a not-too-sweet whole. Also up for sharing was the selection of English cheeses, including the luxuriously creamy Harrogate blue, with a generous selection of biscuits, chutneys and grapes. It was back to the library for coffee with homemade petit fours, and a beautifully relaxed ending to a seriously stylish meal in the most memorable of settings. Three courses from the dining menu cost £50 per person with supplements on certain dishes. From an impressively hefty wine list there are some lovely choices by the glass and the £19.50 wine flight allowed us to sample a light, buttery Louis Latour Chardonnay, a sharp, vibrant Taringi Sauvignon Blanc and a super smooth Cielo Pinot Noir. Menu makeover AWARD-WINNING RESTAURANT GROUP LAUNCH FIRST NEW MENU IN 15 YEARS. he people of Leeds are resistant to change. When Leeds United launched their new crest earlier this year it caused uproar and 70,000 fans had signed a petition to ditch the new design by the end of the day.So, it is with caution that fellow Leeds institution, Sukhothai, are launching their first menu makeover in 15 years. Hyperbole aside, Sukhothai is a genuine Leeds institution; you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Leeds who hasn’t been to one of their four restaurants. Sukhothai are like the Chanel of dining, they never, ever discount their huge popularity. With an army of loyal customers, some of whom visit one of the restaurants week in

T

and week out, news of a new menu could cause another city wide outcry of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ but there is no need to panic, all of Sukhothai’s signature dishes will still be available. As Ban Kaewkraikhot, owner and executive chef, explains: “When I moved over to the UK Thai food wasn’t popular here at all. We opened our first branch, Sukhothai Chapel Allerton, over 15 years ago and at the time it was one of the only Thai restaurants in the north of England. People are now wanting to try different variations of Thai cuisine; our new menu is really a celebration of how far Thai food has come in the past 15 years. The new menu has been six months in the making, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.” Sukhothai have built their stellar reputation with an extensive menu of over 200 dishes, and never jumping on food trends or bandwagons, instead sticking to the fundamentals and doing them exceptionally. They are also meeting the increased demand for vegetarian dishes with some seriously exciting veggie dishes. The new menu launched on 26 March. For more information or to book a table visit https://sukhothai.co.uk.

Stand out dishes from the new menu include: Roaring Rib-Eye – A new cut of steak for Sukhothai, a 12oz rib-eye steak served on a bed of Thai morning glory and topped with an exotic Panaeng curry sauce. Yum Phed Krob Mango – Duck breast with crispy duck crackling, fresh mango, chilli, onion and lemon. Kua Kling – A new dish that’s very popular in Southern Thailand at the moment, an intensely spicy dish of minced chicken and a mixture of Thai hers including lemongrass and lime leaves. Talay Pad Cha – A new seafood dish that is also taking Thailand by storm, made with mussels, prawns and squid and served with a mixture of Thai herbs, fresh peppercorns and Thai baby aubergine. Rumwong Hed – Translated to ‘Dancing Mushrooms’. A selection of exotic Asian mushrooms, including white jelly mushrooms, black jelly mushrooms and Enoki mushrooms, in a specially made Thai salad dressing.

NORTHERN NIGHTS

Brewery’s next steps Northern Monk Brewing Co had plenty to celebrate, having asked members of the public to join them on the next phase of the brewery’s journey. Nearly 1,000 people have helped raise the initial target in just three hours and they are already well on the way to raising £1million. Russ Bissett, owner of Northern Monk Brewing Co, said: “What an incredible day. The North is definitely rising! “We were blown away by the level of support for what we’ve set out to do. We reached our £500,000 target in less than three hours. “There are over 1,000 of us in our business now, which means we’re now overfunding and starting to consider sites for our tap rooms in London and Manchester. At the moment we are looking to raise £1million and give away up to ten per cent of our business for others that are keen to join us.”

HAVE YOU BEEN CAUGHT ON CAMERA? FROM BREWERIES TO BASQUE CELEBRATIONS, THERE’S PLENTY GOING ON IN LEEDS THIS MONTH.

Basque celebration for third birthday Pintxos lovers and gin connoisseurs rejoice, Leeds’ Pintura Kitchen launched a Basqueinspired Pintxos Bar to celebrate their third birthday. Nestled in Pintura’s basement, discerning diners can enjoy a daily Pintxo menu, as well as an indulgent menu of Spanish charcuterie and cheeses. Gin lovers will also adore Pintura’s seasonal Gin & Tonic Plus menu, blurring the lines between the traditional G&T and the cocktail. Commenting on the new Pintxos Bar, executive chef Greg Lewis, said: “Pintxos is synonymous with Basque culture and we are delighted to present our own dedicated Pintxos Bar to Yorkshire’s diners as we celebrate our third anniversary. The menu features some truly exceptional produce and Spanish delicacies in keeping with the cooking styles of the Basque region. “Basque food is designed to be social and our Pintxos Bar is the perfect place to enjoy great food and drink with friends, family and colleagues.” Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 67

DAVID BRANSBY P.A. SERVICES

Serving clients in West and North Yorkshire Offering private and confidential support to small businesses and busy retired people Enhanced DBS Certificate Exemplary references

What my clients say… For the past five years I have had a number of maladies which have reduced my ability to process information, both financial and administrative which, whilst I am retired, is still a large part of my daily life. I was concerned that when I finally kick the bucket, that my wife had more than adequate cover with a person who could deliver high-level administrative help; who was computer literate and who could be entrusted with financial information. We were therefore, fortunate to meet David Bransby who fulfils both roles of personal assistant and, (most importantly, as we are computer illiterate), deep knowledge of and speedy response to the cries for help. David has absolutely full access to all our financial affairs from investments to monthly cash flow statements which he prepares and we have complete confidence in him. He possess the highest security clearance issued by the Disclosure and Barring Service. His involvement with us is a great comfort to me since his knowledge and presence will be of enormous help to my wife when the inevitable occurs. He possesses a most willing, happy and confident personality and literally no request is too small to warrant a rigorous approach from him.

Tel: 0113 318 5698 Mob: 07853 257 662

We would have no hesitation in recommending David Bransby as a very major resource and source of help both in computer matters but, more importantly for us, the proven ability to help us with our affairs and withal, the highest degree of confidentiality and security.

Rural retreat COUNTRY CHIC HAS BEEN GIVEN A MODERN TWIST. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. orget everything you thought you knew about country décor. Forget the traditional chequered sofas, animal ornaments and distressed shabby chic furniture. This year, it’s all about adding a modern twist to a classic British look. No country home would be complete without a sumptuous armchair, but opt for one with metallic legs or a less typical shape to give your living room an edge. Stoves and kettles are more cottage-esque must-haves for those colder spring days, as are plenty of blankets, but ditch the tartan for on-trend geometric or plain throws in neutral beiges or warming browns. Reclaimed furniture is another way to add a rough and ready, yet stylish, centrepiece to your dining and living areas. Wicker baskets,

Newly planted woodland species such as trilliums, ferns, dogtooth violets and wood anemones can be found up behind the historic Bath House. Spicing up a small space WHO SAYS SIZE MATTERS? WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR GARDEN, YOU DON’T NEED ROOM TO IMPRESS, WRITES EMILY SMITH. ring life back into your home this spring by making the most of a small garden. With winter well behind us, there’s no excuse to keep your backyard on the back-burner – and reviving limited outdoor space doesn’t need to be a game of Tetris. Grab your shovel and dig into these tips on growing a green thumb.

B

Upcycling Rather than throwing away old wooden furniture, tempt your creative side by repurposing them outdoors. Repaint and reuse broken shelves as storage for plants, use bright chairs to add a quirky character, or even repurpose a birdbath as a plant pot. With upcycling you can make the most of what you already have, without any extra spending. www.upcycled-wonders.com/garden 86 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Adjust the lighting Turn up the lights – and the liveliness – of a small garden by adding a sense of spark. Combining fairy lights within foliage, dotting lanterns around furniture, or even highlighting a pathway, can all jazz up a gloomy space. This growing trend has seen solar powered lighting skyrocket, so maintenance isn’t an issue for scatter-brains. www.thesolarcentre.co.uk

GARDENS

A pop of colour Through perky plant pots and cheerful furniture, a small pop of colour can go a long way for a small space. Freshening up with florals gives a brighter appearance, and doing this through pots allows hassle-free portability when you fancy a change.

Plant hangers Grow your garden upwards with hanging planters, without jeopardising precious floor space. Ceramic plant hangers, flower baskets, and tiered pots allow you to exploit all angles of your backyard, and they can even be made at home. Incorporate wooden climbers along walls for vines to spread on, for an even cosier feel.

Fire features

Flowing features

Fire pits add a striking style – and a surge of heat – to a chilly garden, all whilst having a cosy feel. Adding anything from a chiminea, barbeque, or a contemporary fire pit means the excuse of it being too cold won’t be an issue, and is perfect for an evening get together.

Implementing a water-based feature brings a calming flow to your garden with minimal effort. A bird bath, tiered fountain or cascading water piece can sit happily in any corner of your garden and take up little room, or act as a grand centrepiece.

GIGGLING IN GIGGLESWICK FOR HAPPINESS DAY Pupils put the ‘giggle' into Giggleswick School to celebrate International Day of Happiness on 20 March. Children at the leading independent school have come up with their favourite jokes to celebrate the day which aims to bring happiness to the top of the agenda for countries all over the world. The pupils already have a head start. Not only do they attend a school with laughter in its very name, but the Craven district of the Yorkshire Dales, where Giggleswick is situated, tops the UK government's official happy list. The area came top with a score of 8.45 on the happiness scale - a measure introduced in 2011 to help gauge national wellbeing. Headteacher Mark Turnbull said: "Living in a place called Giggleswick, we could hardly fail to be a joyful, upbeat, warm and fun community. We thought we'd celebrate International Day of Happiness by making each other laugh and came up with our favourite gags."
