enowned luxury German kitchen manufacturer, SieMatic, produced the first handle-less kitchen in the 1960s and has won numerous awards for its high standards of quality and design. The classic S2 is an incredible 55 years old and is still current in the product range. The S2 is beautifully displayed in the Grid Thirteen studio on Street Lane, Leeds. The SieMatic collections: PURE, CLASSIC AND URBAN, enable the creation of original, individual and timeless kitchen living spaces. The PURE collection is for those that appreciate the beautiful form of minimalist interiors and admire exceptional materials and discreet top of the range features. The CLASSIC collection is ideal for anyone that has a love of bygone eras and beautiful detailing, but desires an interior which still feels modern and luxurious. The URBAN collection completes the portfolio and is ideal for those looking to create a modern kitchen and living space which has lots of personality. SieMatic’s kitchens are as beautiful and considered on the inside as they are on the exterior. They feature a clever internal storage system which can be added to or modified to ensure that the kitchen will always provide effective and tailored organisation. and so it makes sense to integrate it into the most used area of the home. With computer and TV screens set flush into cabinetry, sound systems integrated seamlessly and charging points for smartphones and tablets hidden within drawers, these options can help to create a clutter-free kitchen which is sociable and keeps everyone connected and entertained. Are expensive sports drinks the best way to recover after serious exercise? Casey Walker, resident bike fit specialist at Specialized Concept Store, MSc Sports and Exercise Physiologist, considers the options.
R
Marvellous milk!
esearch has shown that milk is cheaper and just as beneficial as commercially available recovery beverages. Low-fat cow milk has a number of characteristics that make it an excellent good recovery beverage. Milk contains carbohydrates (glucose, maltodextrin) in amounts similar to many commercially available sports drinks. Glycogen replenishment from carbohydrate intake has been identified as a key factor for enhancing recovery following exercise. In addition to the recovery enhancing carbohydrates, milk contains the proteins casein and whey at a ratio of 3:1, which sustains blood amino acid concentrations, beneficial to recovery and protein synthesis. Milk also has a naturally high concentration of electrolytes, which replaces those lost through sweat during workouts. Due to the high concentration of electrolytes in milk, rehydration and mineral recovery can also be enhanced following consumption. So what does all this mean for us cyclists, runners and triathletes? Milk has been found to be beneficial when recovering from endurance activity. Recovery from endurance activity is essential for all, this includes triathletes regularly competing in iron man competition or the weekend warriors who are doing one, or if you are lucky enough to have a partner who doesn’t want you around at the weekend, two days a week. Although great for post
NS • page 14
activity recovery milk isn’t always practical during exercise, for this we recommend electrolyte/carb drinks and energy gels from brands such as Torq and SIS, these gels come in a variety of flavours to cater for even the most sensitive of palates. The rapid absorption rates, especially with isotonic gels such as SIS, facilitate the availability of carbohydrate, meaning you will continue to deliver power throughout your ride, run or any other sport. The main nutritional goal following endurance exercise is to promote glycogen resynthesis and fluid recovery. Following endurance exercise such as cycling, generally we have started to eat into our body’s natural store of glycogen, which is the key fuel for endurance exercise. Anyone who has suffered from ‘the bonk’ will be familiar with the symptoms of low glycogen stores which include dizziness, nausea and the general feeling of near death (that may be somewhat dramatic, but it really is not pleasant). The replacement of our glycogen stores through milk will enhance recovery and allow us to exercise optimally the days after going on a longer ride/run, without feeling tired. Replenishing glycogen stores is not the only factor when it comes to recovery,
research has long been investigating how carbohydrate and protein supplementation enhance protein synthesis following exercise. Studies have found whole or non-fat milk increased circulating amino acids (the building blocks of our muscles) and consequently protein metabolism, essential for muscle hypertrophy. For those of us striving to be that weekend warrior, milk could be your way of increasing muscle mass, decreasing fat free mass and reaching the top of the climb first in your group. For those of you who can’t stomach ordinary milk, studies have found that consuming a chocolate milkshake was equally as effective as other commercially available recovery drinks due its nutritional composition of carbohydrates, protein, sodium and potassium It is also important to note that sports drinks aimed at recovery can also do similar jobs to milk when aiding recovery. This is due to products such as SIS REGO mimicking the nutritional make-up of milk. This could be handy information to know should milk not be for your sensitive palate or you prefer strawberry-flavoured beverages. As milk is proven to be just as good, if not better than sports drinks and it being relatively inexpensive, milk may be the best option. So, whether you are recovering from your latest iron-man, cycling interval session or following a big weights session, it appears milk is definitely a good choice.

NS Business Profile
Bikes in the blood Dave Quinn has built a successful business from his love of cycling and by sticking to his motto: innovate or die. Words: Fiona Barber
F
rom selling Keith Boardman – dad of former British racing cyclist Chris Boardman – Chris’s first bike, to owning Specialized Concept Store, one of Harrogate’s most popular bike shops, it’s fair to say Dave Quinn has earned his earned his stripes in the world of cycling. He grew up surrounded by bikes – his father owned a bike shop in Chester – and one of his earliest memories is learning to ride a trike aged four. After graduating from Aston University in 1980 with a degree in mechanical engineering, Dave worked for renowned holding company Tube Investments. “They owned Raleigh and Sturmey Archer at the time and I worked as a production engineer in the cycling division for two-and-a-half years.” Dave then returned to Chester to work at the family business, which he subsequently took over in 1986. From there, Dave opened the UK’s first Specialized Concept Store in Chester, a brand, which is dedicated providing the best bikes, riding equipment and accessories. Then, just over two years ago, there was an opportunity to develop the business in Harrogate. Dave said: “We were interested in expanding and came to look at the store in Harrogate and realised what a great place it was to have a shop, with great customers and a fantastic location.”
NS • page 16
As well as working with leading brands, providing cyclists with top-notch bikes, accessories and advice, the Harrogate store also has its own cycling team. The branch has proved to be extremely popular and Dave says training and motivation has been the key to success. “Retail is something we are extremely proud of and giving great customer service is what sets us apart. The team here and in all our businesses are fantastic and are extremely knowledgeable and focussed. We
‘I think the cycling industry as a whole has still got a massive momentum, and there are so many different facets of cycling that people can be involved in that I can only see it continuing to grow.’
like to employ those who are experienced and enthusiastic,” he said. Dave is involved in all aspects of the business and takes great pride in achieving customer satisfaction by providing the best fit for the customers’ requirements. He said: “Although we’ve been doing it a long time, we’re constantly striving to improve.” Specialized’s motto is ‘innovate or die’ and it’s clear the ethos of the company matches that of the cycling industry, which is continually evolving due to new technology. Dave reckons product development is just one way in which the industry had changed in recent years. “As well as computerisation and different materials, consumers have become more knowledgeable because of the internet and there are also a lot more brands in the market. It’s a challenge for everyone in the industry,” he said. “I think the cycling industry as a whole has still got a massive momentum, and there are so many different facets of cycling that people can be involved in that I can only see it continuing to grow.” Unit 1, 8-10 West Park, Harrogate, HG1 1BL Tel: 01423 528240 www.specializedconceptstore.co.uk/ harrogate-store

Pain expert opens clinic in Harrogate Nicky Snazell brings a new and unique combination of skills and technology to North Yorkshire.
N
icky Snazell has an international reputation for treating patients with chronic spinal pain and related problems such as sciatica. Patients from around the world seek her help at her two clinics in Staffordshire, where she has treated nearly 10,000 patients. As a biologist, physiotherapist and subsequently a spinal pain specialist, she has gained nearly 30 years of knowledge to help understand the causes of pain and immobility. Her career has taken her to China, Korea, Canada and many European countries, where she has been privileged to work alongside pioneers in their fields. Her drive to learn and discover better methods was ignited by her frustration, as a child, watching her mother suffer years of horrible back pain. Despite seeing numerous professionals, she was never really helped. Nicky is one of only a few in the world to have reached the highest level of qualification and the first practitioner in the world to be awarded a fellowship from the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain. In addition to teaching internationally, she also presents internationally on pain and health with Californian Joseph McClendon, also known for presenting to millions with Tony Robbins. She recently published her first book The 4 Keys to Health in which she has detailed in layman’s terms all that she has learnt. She is currently writing a follow-on trilogy of books on health. The first will be on the mind and is intended to be published this year. You can find out more about Nicky at her website, www.thepainkiller.co.uk NS • page 36
Why Harrogate? Nicky only recently started visiting North Yorkshire when her brother moved to Harrogate and was stunned by the beauty of the countryside, villages and Harrogate itself. “I felt instantly at home with the very warm welcome of all the people I have met and already have several friends,” she says. For some time, Nicky has been considering
expanding her clinics in the UK and so Harrogate was a very easy and logical choice. “My clinics in Staffordshire are in listed buildings in a rural location alongside Cannock Chase. An important part of the success of treatment is the relationship with the therapist and the state of mind of the patient. It is important that the patient starts to relax the moment they arrive and thus the environment is crucial. “ I am delighted that Spa Bottom Farm, just outside Harrogate and surrounded by peaceful countryside, was able to accommodate me” More information about the clinics is available at www.painreliefclinic.co.uk
Magnetic Resonance Treatment (MRT)
Spinal pain expert Nicky Snazell
Nicky’s passion for finding better ways to help people has also led her to seek out new technologies and, with the UK now representing less than two per cent of the world’s population, much of the leading technology is developed abroad. She is especially proud to be pioneering this innovative German MRT technology in the UK, which to date has treated hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide and is used and trusted by hundreds of surgeons and doctors every day. The new MRT machine in Harrogate is only the fourth in the UK. MRT, a development of MRI technology, is unique in the way it treats because it regrows the cells in www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

MRT is… your body. For example, the root cause of osteoarthritis is wear and tear in the joint cartilage. MRT stimulates the growth of new cartilage, thickening the cartilage layer and closing holes where the wear is significant. A key part of selecting any treatment is having the expertise to know what is best for the patient at that time. MRT is just one tool in Nicky’s box and may not necessarily be appropriate for a particular problem. She explains: “I need to be sure that each person is in the best state possible to gain maximum benefit from any treatment I prescribe and I would rather delay physical treatment if that state is not suitable. “When I wrote The 4 Keys to Health my

goal was to communicate to the reader that, in the most part, pain and health are a personal choice. It is the decisions we make through life that will eventually determine the rewards we reap. We are all the authors of our own lives and it is up to us to write a good story. “An important part of my role, therefore, is to help people to understand how to write the story that will enable them to live a long, healthy and pain free life.” Spa Bottom Farm, Haggs Road, Follifoot, HG3 1EQ Tel: 01423 297097 Email: hello@mrtcentre.co.uk www.mrtcentre.co.uk

Take a trip back in time Fascinating history, beautiful gardens and exciting activities… a visit to stunning Ripley Castle has got something for everybody.

T
here’s no denying Ripley Castle captures the true essence of Yorkshire romance. From the courtyard, the view of the castle, deer park and ornamental lake begin to unfold; it’s truly enchanting. While the appearance of the venue is undeniably outstanding, its extraordinary history is far more remarkable. The Ingilby family (one of the ten oldest families in the country) has occupied the castle for an impressive 700-plus years. Their fascinating past is one of political, military, religious and social turbulence, of plague and persecution, of renaissance, enlightenment and industrial revolution. It is a tale of romance, courage, loyalty and recklessness. James I even stayed at the castle in 1603, and by 1605 the Ingilbys were plotting to kill him. In fact, nine of the 11 known conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot were close relations or associates of the Ingilby family. Today, the grade-I listed 14th-century country house is no longer a venue for plotting treason and instead, is a historic
attraction open to the public all year round. The gardens are particularly popular and are open to visitors throughout the year (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day). They are a joy to visit at any time and in April contain a collection of hyacinths, which give a riot of colour in spring as well as a magnificent aroma. The walled garden contains some of Britain’s largest herbaceous borders and is stunning to see between June and October each year, while the kitchen garden includes an extensive herb bed and an extraordinary collection of rare vegetables, grown in cooperation with the Henry Doubleday Research Association. Guided tours of the gardens are available and take place monthly from March to September and weekly during August at 1.30pm. Besides the stunning gardens, the undulating and varied parkland makes Ripley Castle the ideal venue for outdoor activities. Live For Today Adventures and Log Heights have been running events in the grounds for over a decade, and with a huge range of activities in varying degrees of difficulty, there

and if it’s water you prefer, then why not go out on the lake in a canoe or kayak. You could event attempt to cross it in your very own built raft. These activities are not only popular with families, but are also ideal for businesses to take part in for team building events. Each
activity is designed to deliver a specific outcome, which will focus on improving team communication, listening skills, collaboration and more, while ensuring each member has fun every step of the way. NS Community
Preserving heritage A Heritage Lottery Fund grant is helping to give a 19th century mansion – and now Sikh temple – a new lease of life.
P
otternewton Mansion – an historical building in north Leeds that is now a Sikh temple – has received funding for urgent repairs. The Gurdwara Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, as it is known, has been awarded a £235,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Potternewton Mansion essential repairs and community readiness project. As part of this project, local artists, education providers and members of the local community will recall and record the history of the mansion in art, workshops and oration. These activities will create access for
a wider audience to enjoy the mansion’s heritage, and explore the Baht Sikh legacy. Potternewton Mansion was built circa 1817 by prominent local wool merchant James Brown. When built, the house stood on a 700-750 acre estate with a 30-acre park at the front of the house. The mansion is significant to the area because the entire Chapeltown area was developed from its estate lands. It was in public ownership from 1901 to 2006, when it was purchased by a Sikh community for use as a temple. The project aims to carry out essential repair work to the roof, windows and stone elements of the building. Further repairs to
the building’s interior will include a heating system and new kitchen facilities. The main hall on the ground floor of the building will house a static visual timeline display. The display will capture the historic milestones of Potternewton Mansion through the ages in an art and image exhibition, and an online digital showcase. The exhibition and web portal will provide the public with access to an important piece of Leeds’ urban heritage in the context of the mansion’s 18th century estate grounds. An educational programme for schools will also open up resources in the Sikh religion, and local history.
Potternewton Mansion Heritage Potternewton Mansion has a heritage to draw on that sits firmly within the growth and development of the Chapeltown urban district. This Grade II listed building was originally designed and built in 1817 as a home for the Brown family. The dynasty began with James Brown (1758-1813), a Leeds woollen merchant who made it rich on the back of a boom in trade in the late 18th century. His son, James II (1786-1845) had Harehills Grove built, circa 1817, probably as a result of money he inherited upon the death of his father. It is interesting to note that Benjamin Gott was remodeling Armley House and the Nicholson family building Roundhay Mansion around the same time. Potternewton estate stretched from beyond Gledhow Woods in the north, as far as Cowper Street in the south, west to Chapeltown Road and east to Roundhay Road. After a period of land disposal, out of which the Chapeltown urban area developed between 1877 and 1901, the property and a 30-acre parkland was sold to Leeds Corporation by then-owner R. B. Jowitt. Between 1901 and 1929, it was put to use as an arboretum and tropical garden. Another account recalls a museum, housed within the main building. In the early 1920s, Harehills Grove, as it was still called, became a school for children with special needs. It was only after World War II that the property was renamed Potternewton Mansion School. It remained a special needs school until the early 1960s, when Park Lane College acquired the building for use as an annex. The Bhat Sikh community eventually acquired the building in 2006, and since then it has been a Gurdwara or Sikh Temple.

The Bhat community of Sikhs Bhat Sikhs were among the first of the Sikh communities to migrate to Britain from India. They started to arrive in the UK in the 1920s, but most immigrated in the late 1940s or 1950s. By the 1950s, the Bhats had established themselves as a settled community all over Britain in port towns and cities. Many came from India at that time to take up work in the foundries and mills of industrial Britain. However, they were unique in that their entrepreneurial spirit gave them flair to set up their own business. After settling in the UK, many Bhat Sikhs diversified into convenience stores and property. Many are now self-made businessmen and entrepreneurs. There are an estimated 1,000 Bhat Sikhs in Leeds at present, largely originating from Lahore district. The majority of the congregation that attends the temple are from North Leeds, encompassing areas such as Moortown, Roundhay, Alwoodley and Bramhope. The Bhat Sikhs pride themselves in upholding traditional and somewhat conservative values. The majority are turbaned and bearded, and were instrumental in establishing the very first Gurdwara in Leeds on Savile Road in the 1950s. It is characteristic of Bhat Gurdwaras in the UK to be linked with ongoing community projects. The Gurdwara Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji at Potternewton Mansion hopes to carry on this tradition, in extending its building to the community at large.
The community readiness project The community readiness project aims to research and document these periods of change, introducing a story of the history of the Bhat community in Leeds against a backdrop of the history of Potternewton Mansion. Two areas on the ground floor of the mansion will be given over to galleries themed around the buildings’ contribution to both local history and Sikhism. Central to these activities will be the Sikh commitment to offer ‘Langar’, a common kitchen where vegetarian food is freely served in a Gurdwara to all its visitors. Upon completion, the hall will provide an exhibition space for the visual arts and a gallery, exhibiting artwork that describes and interprets the mansion’s colourful history. The temple is collaborating with Leeds College of Art to ensure that the project is delivered to a high standard, and that the students get the fullest experience from their involvement. Grant funding and consultancy for the project was arranged by Corporate SR, a local community involvement management consultancy practice. Corporate SR’s Hugh Thompson has worked closely with a steering group consisting of:Vijay Singh, a strong resource of information about the Bhat Sikhs, with expertise in property; Ghian Singh, vice president of the temple committee, Keith Dickson, our mansion history researcher; and Narinder Kaur, who is an experienced teacher. Many other people have either volunteered or collaborated to ensure the project’s success.
About the Heritage Lottery Fund Using money raised through the National Lottery, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) aims to make a lasting difference for heritage, people and communities across the UK and help build a resilient heritage economy. From museums, parks and historic places to archaeology, natural environment and cultural traditions, the HLF invests in every part of the UK’s diverse heritage. HLF has supported almost 35,000 projects with more than £5.3bn across the UK. More information can be found at www.hlf.org.uk.

NS Celebration
Rich heritage The Cairn Hotel is celebrating 125 years at the centre of Harrogate’s history.
T
he Cairn Hotel in Harrogate is delighted to be celebrating its 125th anniversary with a number of exciting events taking place this year including a Downton Abbey-inspired evening on 3 October. Built in the mid-1800s and sold at auction to Mr Arthur Ernest Wynn on 3 June 1890, this Victorian hotel is steeped in history, surviving a fire in 1891 and two World Wars. But to grasp the hotel’s importance, an understanding of Harrogate’s history is essential. William Slingsby discovered the Tewit Spring Well in 1571 and it wasn’t long before the growing town became known as Spadacrenea Anglica – The English Spa. A number of wells were later found, including High Harrogate’s Chalybeate wells and Low Harrogate’s sulphur Cheltenham Well in 1818. Harrogate became an increasingly popular holiday destination in the 1800s, when medical opinion shifted toward the use of sulphur water to treat various health conditions. This became known as ‘taking the waters’. A wealth of hotels and spa centres soon emerged including The Cairn Hydropathic and Hotel Establishment. The area of the hotel that housed the old baths is still in place today, although is not currently in use. Many guests are fascinated by the original hand painted tiles and it is hoped these rooms will one day be restored to their former glory. The Cairn is now owned by Strathmore

Hotels in East Kilbride, Scotland, who purchased the hotel in 1992. Strathmore have spent millions undertaking major refurbishments and since they took over the business, the foyer, lounge and public areas have been refurbished twice. General Manager Gaynor Wilson has been running the hotel for the past two years and has seen many changes since she started working at The Cairn 19 years ago.
“The unique selling point is the building’s interesting history,” she says. “We are always trying to modernise, whilst keeping the features and character of the old hotel.” Gaynor and her staff have already hosted a 90s disco night to mark the year Strathmore purchased the hotel and are
looking forward to rolling back the years further with a Bugsy Malone gangster themed night on Saturday 8 August. This event will celebrate the 1900s with a two-course dinner followed by live entertainment and dancing for £21.95 per person. There will be a penultimate party on Sunday 6 September with an afternoon tea dance including finger sandwiches, scones, tea, coffee and live music for only £7.95, before the spectacular 1890s dinner dance on Saturday 3 October. The staff promise to look after their guests in true Downton Abbey style with a champagne reception, six-course silver service dinner, followed by a dance to Echo 42 Big Band, all for the special price of £44.95; or stay the night and add a full English breakfast for £99 per person. The hotel has a number of enjoyable features including the Promenade Ballroom which houses the largest sprung dance floor in the north east of England. The recent revival of dancing, thanks to TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, has meant the ballroom is more popular than ever. This hotel’s magnificent surroundings are only matched by its outstanding staff. “We are told time and time again that we are the friendliest hotel in Harrogate,” says Gaynor. “We owe our excellent Trip Advisor reviews to our customer service, as well as the building’s charm.” To book your ticket to one of The Cairn Hotel’s spectacular events, call 01423 504005. Bigger and better... the new look Fazenda Bar and Grill now offers even more.
N
ewly expanded Fazenda Bar and Grill Leeds has reopened with a new interior design, featuring stucco walls, richer wood, antique mirrors and softer lighting, all added to enhance the Fazenda experience. The new layout in Leeds now brings 158 covers, two private dining rooms for ten guests each and a new larger version on the famously bountiful Fazenda salad bar, with options including sushi, smoked salmon, cured meats, hot dishes and some traditional Brazilian ones as well. Fazenda Bar and Grill offers 15 different cuts of beef, chicken, lamb and pork served ‘churrascaria’-style (‘from the barbecue’) which are carved from joints at the table with exceptional standards of service. It is the perfect place for Christmas celebrations, with bookings for December already being placed by guests both for larger parties and smaller family celebrations. Tomas Maunier, director of Fazenda Bar and Grill, says: “Leeds is where Fazenda Bar and Grill was born four years ago and the new expansion and refurbishment means we can offer diners in the city and West Yorkshire an even better experience.”

Cocktail specialists Be At One have taken London by storm. Fiona Barber discovers the secrets of mixology at the fast-growing chain’s new Leeds bar
MIX IT UP!
F
or many bartenders, owning their own bar may seem something of a fantasy. But the three co-owners of cocktail bar group Be At One are proof that hard work pays off – and they are reaping the rewards of their entrepreneurial vision. The trio – who met in their 20s while working at TGI Fridays – recently added a new bar in Millennium Square, Leeds, to their empire, which now totals an impressive 26 bars. Steve Locke, Leigh Miller and Rhys Oldfield started in business when they converted an old restaurant in Battersea Rise, Clapham Junction into a cocktail bar. It proved to be a bit hit with punters and the rest – as they say – is history. Be At One has taken London by storm and now has 18 bars across the capital. Marketing manager Sarah Swaysland, who has worked for the company since 2006, says that Be At One’s ethos has remained the same, despite the success. “The focus has always been to stick to what they’re are good at – great service, drinks and atmosphere.” Expanding to the north was something
they had always wanted to do and Sarah says Leeds was an obvious choice. “Leeds already has a budding cocktail scene and we wanted to contribute to that and cater for welleducated people who know what a great drink looks like.” The menu at Be At One boasts more than 150 cocktails and to ensure bartenders can mix quickly and to a high standard, each goes through an eight-week training programme. This includes three weeks in a classroom, with the rest spent at the company’s Greek Street bar in London. Training concludes with an assessment that tests knowledge of drinks, accurate free pouring, mixing skills and an on-bar certification to ensure they can consistently serve drinks to a high standard. Sarah says previous experience doesn’t matter when the company recruits staff. “We hire people with great personalities and with such fantastic training they come out as great bartenders anyway.” The Leeds bar has 13 professional mixologists and if you fancy a go, why not try a Be At One cocktail master class, at which you will be taught how to make cocktails by
expert bartenders – a great way to try out your shaking skills. Happy hour (4.30-8.00pm) – unsurprisingly – is extremely popular and allows customers to enjoy two cocktails for the price of one. If you miss out on happy hour, fear not because Be At One have invented ‘appy hour’, which enables those who download the Be At One app to pass their phone to a bartender who enters a code for the customer to get two cocktails for £9.50. The app also offers a ‘be appventurous’ option, which comes up with a random cocktail for just £5. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to go for a birthday, or just want to enjoy some delicious cocktails in the heart of the city centre, the new Be At One bar is the ideal place to visit. With such a huge range of cocktails to choose from, you’re bound to discover something you love.

NS Eating Out
As good as before? Phoebe Seymour returns to a favourite Leeds restaurant to see if it still cuts the mustard.
V
ery few restaurants are worth the effort of driving to another city. As I live in Sheffield and the restaurant in question was in Leeds, this required over an hour’s drive up the M1. However, I was delighted when I discovered that the restaurant was Thai Edge. I first came here with my parents about a year ago and wondered why they were prepared to trek so far when we have plenty of Thai restaurants in our home city. But after one taste of their delicious dishes, it became clear. On the evening’s visit, most customers opt for the buffet which offers an impressive selection of everything. Despite people going back and forth for food, there’s a peaceful atmosphere in this sophisticated, contemporary space with its white and gold walls, Thai figures and jewelled deer statues here and there, and the soft sunlight shining through the tall windows. I order a fresh and fruity glass of Pinot Grigio Rosé as the menu recommends this to go with the Tom Yum soup, which I intend on ordering, whilst my partner has a refreshing bottle of Tiger, something no curry establishment would be complete without. It’s the little touches that make all the difference when dining out. Our waiter Kom lays napkins over our laps and two waitresses bring over a large bottle of water and prawn

crackers to share. When our starters do arrive, they are stylishly presented with flowers on the side. My tangy and spicy Tom Yum soup is packed full of floating prawns and mushrooms and the sharpness of the wine makes a nice contrast.Yum indeed! My partner is equally pleased with his beautifully baked vegetable samosas, which come with a pot of sweet chilli sauce. The panang curry has a peanut sauce mixed with cream and coconut. Full of generous slices of chicken, cauliflower and broccoli, I’ve chosen to have mine medium hot. My partner has a chicken, chilli and basil stir fry in a thin, soy-style sauce with strips of carrot, runner beans and courgettes. The pad Thai noodles are sweet and I love the little pots of chopped nuts, dried chillies and wedges of lime on the side. This is accompanied by sticky, steamed coconut rice. I can tell this is an amazing meal as I am full, but can’t help going back for one more spoonful. My partner cools off with strawberry and caramel ice cream, followed by a latte and I have an aromatic and reviving pot of jasmine tea. Tonight’s meal at Thai Edge is even more delicious than I remember. If you live far away, it’s definitely worth the journey. If you live close by and adore Thai food, there is no excuse not to give this gem a go.

Come and experience the buzz and share your dining date with friends or family alongside a crisp glass of wine. If you’re in the city and want to combine contemporary dining with classic Italian tastes, then San Carlo on South Parade fits the bill. Positioned within the interior of the business district, San Carlo Leeds offers a wide selection of fresh seafood – displayed in a striking iced display on a beautifully handcrafted marble bar. It’s a lively place guaranteeing you a sophisticated experience. t was one of those perfect English summer evenings that would have lingered long in the memory even if the restaurant had not been up to scratch. A stroll through the ruins of Knaresborough castle, a coffee in the cobbled square and then a short drive down picturesque country lanes, with the gently rolling hills and cloudless sky providing the perfect backdrop, heightened our expectations and sharpened our appetites. This was rather different to my first visit to The Malt Shovel in Brearton in the depth of winter, when a vicious wind whipped the trees and I peered anxiously into the gloom for a sign. Where was I, and where on earth was this blasted pub? On that occasion the welcoming lights guided me in and inside was all log fires, cosy nooks and warm welcomes. No need for a fire tonight, but this gloriously unspoilt 15th century pub still radiates warmth. Inside, a simple white candle on every table provides a touch of class. The menu provides an attractive blend of hearty pub favourites and more high-end cheffing. As we were about to discover, The Malt Shovel covers all bases rather brilliantly. For starters my salt and chilli squid, with sweet chilli dipping sauce and Asian salad, was a winner. So often this dish disappoints – either the batter is too soggy or the squid has turned to rubber. On this occasion it was perfect; intensely savoury, crunchy on the outside and soft within. My companion’s plate of smoked salmon was full of flavour and nicely dressed with rocket, capers and lemon dressing.
My main course was slow-cooked pork belly. The thick chunks of meat looked formidable but all those hours in the oven had worked their magic, leaving the pork incredibly tender, my knife searing effortlessly through the layers to create a rich, satisfying mouthful. With proper crispy crackling, Dauphinoise potatoes, petit pois and apple sauce, this was comfort food taken to a new level. Our other main course of venison was, if anything, even more impressive. The dark meat was thinly sliced, perfectly tender, full of flavour and incredibly delicious. Served with celeriac puree, black berries, red wine jus and braised cabbage; it was another perfect plate. Something light for pudding would probably have been sensible after such a rich feast… a sliver of sorbet perhaps? But then I spied caramelised bread and butter pudding on the menu, something I am cruelly deprived of at home where a certain person has an irrational aversion to custard. This was a crunchy, chewy, sweet and fruity delight with lashings of the yellow stuff. The cheese plate included the excellent local Harrogate Blue, the coffee was spot-on, the beer was in good order and they had a great wine list including some fine choices by the glass. Incidentally, The Malt Shovel’s informative website includes a couple of detailed country walks from the pub car park for those energetic souls who feel the need to burn off a few calories before refuelling. What a smart idea – it’s a beautiful part of the world and this is definitely food worth working up a healthy appetite for.

Ingredients Serves 4 • 3 tbsp good quality extra virgin olive oil • 2 cloves of garlic, sliced thinly • 300g risotto rice (we used arborio) • 1 small glass white wine (optional) • 1½ litres fish stock, boiling • A bunch of spring onion, thinly sliced • 1 red chilli, deseeded, half sliced and half finely chopped • 400g tiger prawn prawns, de-shelled • Juice of 1 lemon • Salt & pepper to season Method Heat the olive oil in a large pan on a medium heat, add the garlic and cook until soft. Add the risotto rice and fry for 2 minutes. Add the white wine, stirring it into the rice until all the liquid is absorbed. Now start adding your stock very gradually, one ladle at a time. Stir until all the liquid is absorbed into the rice before adding your next ladle. Stir regularly and slowly until all the stock is absorbed – it should take about 10 – 15 minutes.
About 5 minutes before the risotto is ready, add the spring onions and chilli, stir for a couple of minutes and then add your prawns. Cook until the prawns are pink and the rice is al dente! Serve with a squeeze of lemon and season with salt and pepper.

True romance The Black Swan Hotel: a quintessentially English venue where dream weddings come true.
T
he Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley, North Yorkshire is the most idyllic venue for a romantic countryinspired wedding. Steeped in history, an inn has stood on this spot since Tudor times, and during the 19th Century it was a pivotal staging post for the Helmsley Highflyer, en route York and Leeds. Its well-loved country charm, welcoming atmosphere and quaint English gardens, overlooking the pretty churchyard next door, made it the perfect venue for Annemarie King and her team to co-create a rustic-luxe themed photographic campaign. Model James with his red-haired beauties, Zara and Connor, the Irish red setter, are on location at The Black Swan Hotel www.blackswan-helmsley.co.uk to bring this theme to life with a touch of nostalgia. The evocative images are intimate, dream-like, and sometimes fun and light-hearted. The timeless, informal elegance of the photography shoot mirrors the essence of this
historic hotel venue – the smartly-tailored handsome groom James, in his Yorkshire tweeds and smartly polished brogues, along with his bride’s sweet, ethereal beauty and swan-like elegance make for a beautiful pairing, and Connor certainly adds a special appeal to the ‘family shots’. The various settings demonstrate the hotel’s oak beamed Tudor Lounge the hotel’s oldest part, with its original inglenook and the cosy stone-walled Crosland Lounge, as well as the pretty English walled gardens in which the new Oak Gazebo is located, which is now available for summer wedding ceremonies and celebrations. NS Education
Meet the head
The custodians of some of our local schools share their secrets to a successful education, writes Fiona Barber.
Jessica Crossley of Moorfield School Jessica Crossley has been at Moorfield School for seven years, during which time she has seen many advancements. “I love being the head at Moorfield and I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work here. A typical day can involve chatting to parents at the beginning and end of the school day, taking assembly, meeting and showing prospective parents around the school, serving lunch and bringing ideas to reality by meeting and planning with staff. “Children are great fun to be with and I have the chance to help to make a childhood magical. I enjoy strategic development and this year we developed the school grounds to include an astroturf area for sport and a big bushcraft facility. “Next year will consolidate the expansion to our curriculum and introduce the Moorfield Passport to Adventure.” Wharfedale Lodge, 11 Ben Rhydding Road, Ilkley, LS29 8RL
Martin McElhone of Moorlands School For the last two years, Martin McElhone has been the headteacher at Moorlands School, which welcomes children aged two to 11 years. “Each morning I head out with the students from breakfast club to meet and greet the other families at the front gate. It’s nice to catch up with the parents and talk to the children. “The most exciting thing about my job is that the children of Moorlands never cease to amaze me. I challenge them to live to the school motto, Intrepide, on a daily basis and they certainly do. We have translated Intrepide into ‘be brave’ or ‘have a go’ and they have risen to the challenge, whether it be having a guess at an answer in class, swimming in the deep end of our pool or performing on stage – the Moorlanders’ ‘have a go’ attitude is wonderful. “Due to our membership at the Methodist Independent School’s Trust, Moorlands’ governors recently approved a programme of significant development for the school over the next few years, so it’s going to be an incredibly exciting time for Moorlands and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.” Foxhill Drive,Weetwood Lane, Leeds LS16 5PF
Dr Tracy Johnson of Gateways School Gateways School provides an outstanding education for boys aged two to 11 and girls aged two to 18. Dr Tracey Johnson has been headmistress at the school since September 2012 and strives to make a difference to every pupil. “Each day is totally different and you never really know what’s coming next. I guess that’s what I love about my job. “In whatever way I can, I want to make a difference to the pupils in my care and this is what brings me the most job satisfaction. That could be by providing the right environment for a child to discover new talents and pursue them successfully, or by supporting a child pastorally through a difficult period in their life, or by facilitating a bespoke curriculum, which meets their individual needs. “My ambition is for Gateways to move from being the third-best, small independent school in the UK to the very best, small independent school in the UK.” Harewood, Leeds, LS17 9LE

Perfect balance The Lexus IS 300h F Sport – Character and class personified.
I
n the USA the likes of Missy Elliott, Coolio, TLC, Ludacris, Kanye West, Rihanna, Chris Brown, and even the mighty Jay Z have all rapped about owning, driving or making out in a Lexus. Well, it would seem that Lexus is set to retain this cool image with the introduction of the new look Lexus IS 300h F Sport, which manages rather perfectly to marry performance and economy while retaining the sense of prestige and class that has long been a hallmark of the brand. So much so that amongst the car’s crisp carbon fibre interior and ultra-modern readouts is a tasteful clock, the kind that you might be presented with by your boss when you retire. Trust me, it works and adds a definite sense of class to proceedings. While such finishing touches personify Lexus’ tendency to tip its hat at former glories, the brand is definitely driving towards the future, with one of the best hybrid systems available in any car. Lexus do hybrid very well and it shows

here. The 2.5-litre petrol engine runs direct injection and comes alive at medium revs, with the electric motor seamlessly filling in any gaps. Given the saloon size dimensions of the car, which are similar to the previous model, the drive has plenty of poke, with a 0-62 time at a not too shabby 8.2 seconds and a top speed at a more than adequate 125mph. However, the IS 300h wouldn’t dream of

being so vulgar as to brag about such figures to its mates. No, it’s a better class of car altogether; one that allows you to select Sport Mode for firmer steering and a sharper throttle response, while Eco Mode gives you the option of a quieter and more frugal drive, maximising the electric motor to full effect. Such a well-rounded hybrid system is a clear statement of intent, as is the car’s remodelled bodywork, with aerodynamic contours that make a real difference to the drive. Downforce is increased and drag is reduced, meaning that a trip from Leeds to Newcastle will use up just over a sixth of a tank of fuel. Such attention to economical design isn’t at the expense of aesthetics either. There are few better looking ‘junior exec’ cars out there. Whether it’s inside (the supercar-inspired sliding rev counter being a highlight) or outside, this car has character and class in spades. With CO2 emissions that put it in a low company car tax band, looks that will turn more than a few heads and the right balance between economy and performance, there are few cars in this category that have as much to get excited about. Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Exciting partnership
T
he Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) has agreed a partnership with one of the country’s leading independent schools, Queen Ethelburga’s in
York. The exciting partnership will see both institutions develop a number of initiatives, including a joint cricket academy for talented and committed players aged 16-19 and Queen Ethelburga’s Cricket Academy Programme, which will aim to maximise the development of players from the ages of 11 to 16, with academy under 12s and under 14s playing district and county matches. Both programmes are supported by YCCC, which develops cricketing potential while allowing students to access an outstanding academic education. Yorkshire’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon says: “It is very exciting that we are able to develop our successful academy under the auspices of the region’s leading independent school for sport in Queen Ethelburga’s. “The fundamental goal of the Yorkshire Cricket Academy Programme recognises that
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
players develop at different ages. To achieve this, a detailed coaching and playing programme has been developed with the school, to provide everything that is required from a cricketing point of view. Added to that, students will have the advantage of receiving a full-time independent school education at one of the highest-performing establishments in the country.” Former Yorkshire cricketer and Queen Ethelburga’s director of cricket Ishy Dawood says this is an amazing opportunity for young cricketers to get top-level coaching as well as an outstanding academic education. “The programme is a brilliant chance for Queen Ethelburga’s to work with Yorkshire County Cricket Club to help develop the potential of young players. “Academy students will need to be passionate about the sport and have the drive and commitment to play and train at the very highest levels. It will also be a fantastic chance for pupils to learn in an excellent academic establishment. “Queen Ethelburga’s has been ranked as one of the top independent schools in the country and our cricket staff will work very
closely with our teachers to make sure players achieve highly both in the classroom and on the field. If you want to play cricket at the top level in the region and learn in a firstrate school, then our academy could be the answer.” The elite tier players will represent the school in the national T20 competition against the strongest school sides in the country. Under the guidance of YCCC, players will have the chance to play for the county in the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Yorkshire premier league on a Saturday afternoon and play further competitive fixtures for Queen Ethelburga’s against county cricket academies, universities and county-age group teams on Sundays. Students will be given bespoke training programmes including access to a full-time strength and conditioning coach and access to physiotherapy treatment and sports massages. He says his wife “keeps him planted” and his old boss and dear friend who passed away some years ago, taught him a lot. “I hope she’s looking down and approves!” His business advice is simply to give it go. “Even if you don’t succeed, at least you’ve had the nerve to try.”

His role model is head of business Gary Clayton who says: “If you focus your career on providing the best customer experience, the customers will look after your career.” Kad’s advice to other entrepreneurs is to be yourself, adapt to changes within your business and to take note of William Shakespeare’s famous quote, “The world is your oyster”.

Bedern Hall and the area have some great stories to tell. We are also working on a new fundraising initiative, The Bedern Hall Foundation, to help fund new facilities.” Roger’s advice is: “You must be prepared to get your hands dirty to be able to understand all aspects of your business. Leading Leeds kitchen showroom throws a tea party to celebrate the flagship store’s first anniversary
ALNO customers have their cake and eat it
W
ant to have your cake and eat it?! That’s exactly what visitors to the ALNO kitchen showroom in Leeds enjoyed as they helped the German kitchen company celebrate its flagship store’s first anniversary on Saturday 20 June. The ALNO Store Leeds held a fantastic vintage-inspired afternoon tea party in cooperation with Just Grand! Vintage Tea Rooms, treating guests to a delicious selection of homemade sandwiches and cakes with background music from the 1940s and 50s in recognition of the brand’s 88-year heritage. Hosted at the showroom on Gelderd Road in Leeds, the beautifully designed kitchens provided a modern, luxurious backdrop to the popular event. The team from JustGrand! thoroughly enjoyed preparing their homemade treats in the ALNOSTAR VETRINA handleless glass kitchen and the showroom was soon filled with the aroma of freshly baked scones from the Miele Pureline oven. Three lucky raffle prize winners went home with a vintage picnic hamper, a bottle of Champagne, and an ALNO goody bag. It has been a fantastic opening year for The ALNO Store Leeds and the experienced design team is looking forward to celebrating its superb German kitchens with more customers at upcoming events. If you were not able to join the afternoon tea party, why not visit The ALNO Store Leeds during its opening hours Monday to

The showroom has also just been fully refitted with brand new Siemens appliances, perfectly complementing the stunning German kitchens. At ALNO, there is a wide selection of different materials and finishes for you to choose from, including the ALNOSTAR SMARTLINE in Caruba Elm-effect (pictured), which looks great paired with lighter shades of cream or white in matt glass or high-gloss UV lacquer. Other displays include the award-winning
ALNOCERA ceramic kitchen, the matt lacquer of ALNOFINE in on-trend greys and a variety of matt and high-gloss glass ranges including ALNOVERA in high-gloss black with a chic stainless steel-effect frame. With Summer upon us, now is a great time to bring your kitchen up-to-date with a fresh design that works for you. Teeing off in Tenerife An inviting climate and stunning courses make the largest of the Canary islands an ideal year-round destination for golfers. Words: John Murphy
T
raditionally Tenerife has been the first choice as a winter sun destination, offering the prospect of heat, fine beaches and a break from bleak British weather. That perception is now changing with the realisation that the island, the largest of the Canaries, offers attractions as an all-year-round destination. The principal among these is the climate – temperatures average 22 degrees centigrade and 27 degrees is rarely exceeded. There is no variation in temperature between summer and winter months and it is increasingly seen as a better alternative to traditional summer destinations such as Spain and Portugal where temperatures can be oppressive in the summer months. The tourist industry is helping to encourage this influx of new visitors in the summer by offering attractive rates for hotels and for playing golf on the eight courses on the island. The mild but warm climate in the summer makes golf a pleasure in Tenerife and golf parties or couples would be well advised to consider the island as the ideal destination. Tenerife is just over four hours’ flight time away (Monarch fly from a number of UK airports) and one of the courses closest to the airport is Golf Las Americas. The verdant 18-hole course is formed from a natural amphitheatre of land with stunning views over the Atlantic and the island of La Gomera, home to the Canaries’ ninth golf course El Tecina. The par 72 was designed by John Jacobs and is a perfect example of a really good resort course. The fairways are enticingly
NS • page 82
wide as they snake around lines of pine and palm trees and the greens, with some
Golf Las Americas
undulations, are fair and true. The Bermuda grass on the fairways means that clean ball striking is the order of the day. It is not unduly long and some of the shorter par fours and fives offer the average club golfer the chance of that rare commodity: a birdie. A review would be incomplete without mention of the wonderful clubhouse with balconies overlooking the course and its exotic flowers and fauna. The quality of food and service is excellent as would be anticipated with it being part of the five-star Hotel Las Madrigueras resort. Many of the luxurious and spacious bedrooms, the terraces, the restaurant and the swimming pool overlook the course and it is ideally situated being close to both Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. As is the case with many golfing destinations, especially on the continent, courses such as Golf Las Americas are attached to a hotel which offers discounted rates to play and stay. The rates improve in
the summer months so that one night’s bed and breakfast here for two plus one round of golf is offered from 202 euros until 30 September 2015. The Abama course is another attached to a hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, where special rates are offered. The course contrasts markedly with Golf Las Americas; it is more of a stadium course with fair distances between tee and green which makes walking a challenge for anyone but the fittest. Any track where you have to avoid 22 lakes and 25,000 palm trees is tough and Abama certainly is a great test of golfing skills, or lack of them. Dave Thomas has used all his imagination to create some awe-inspiring holes hewn out of rocks and canyons which are a major feature of the landscape. The hotel offers a fine retreat from the rigours of the golf course with outstanding food, service and facilities. A golfing holiday to Tenerife would be incomplete without a visit to Golf Costa Adeje, arguably the flagship and most famous course on the island having staged the Spanish Ladies’ Open last September. The Pepe Gancedo layout is highly unusual – raised terraces made from boulders run across a number of fairways, old farm walls

line holes and some bunkers incorporate the volcanic signature sand of Tenerife. There is a sense that the course is longestablished and very traditional. This, plus the fantastic views, makes the course a pleasure to play. A number of holes have greens perched on the headland, framed by the azure colours of the ocean below. Other courses on the island include the Manuel Pinero modified Golf del Sur, the Donald Steel designed Amarilla Golf, the Ballesteros Buenavista, the very traditional Real Club de Golf de Tenerife, and Golf la Rosaleda. Further details of golf packages and special summer rates can be found at www.webtenerife.com/golf. Golf is not the only attraction on Tenerife. It’s home to 70 beaches, the majority of which have been awarded blue flag status. It’s an island of two halves; the lush north of the island complements the sunny and dry south, shielded from the wind and humidity by a mountainous landscape which divides the island into two different worlds. At the heart of the mountainous range is the Tiede National Park which features the spectacular Mount Tiede.Vast volcanic craters greet the visitor and imprints of lava flows

remain etched on the craggy landscape. A cable car will take you up to the very top of the volcano – although some hearty souls do attempt to walk. Whale and dolpin watching is also popular. The waters around the island are home to about 400 short-finned pilot whales and numerous bottlenose dolphins and tours are available all year round. Tenerife also has a well-deserved reputation as a culinary destination with its excellent food being complemented by some award-winning local wines which owe their success both to great
imagination and the subtropical climate. In addition to Hotel Las Madrigueras, visitors might want to consider the plush five-star Iberostar Anthelia Hotel or the comfortable and friendly Hotel Suite Villa Maria – also five-star. The former offers discounted packages to stay and play at Golf Las Americas and Costa Adeje while the latter offers three nights bed and breakfast from 197 euros per person until the end of September including two green fees, unlimited golf at Costa Adeje, buggies, lunchtime buffet at the course and taxes.

The common law partner – a myth or reality? Co-habitation – are you protected if your partner dies? Asks Paula Myers, solicitor at Irwin Mitchell.
W
e are often contacted by co-habitees after the death of their partner and if there is no Will to provide for them, we have to bear the difficult news that they are not provided for under the Intestacy Rules. It is also a surprise for clients to be told that there is no such thing in English law as a common law partner. It is a myth and sadly the law is not as up-to-date as it should be to reflect and take into account modern family living arrangements. Co-habitation has doubled in the past 15 years and there are now over 1.8 million couples who live together and who are unmarried and there are two million children who have unmarried co-habiting parents. A recent survey carried out by Irwin Mitchell found that 74 per cent of lawyers felt that co-habitation laws needed to be updated. Disputes involving cohabitees and Wills and Estates have increased by 25 per cent in the past few years and it is set to increase. If someone dies without preparing a Will or without sorting out their family affairs, so perhaps a sudden death, there are many issues the deceased’s family and partner may face whilst trying to come to terms with a bereavement. Here are a few examples of issues some of our clients have encountered: A co-habiting couple of over 30 years who were dedicated to each other. Fortunately, their property was held as joint tenants and so the woman was left with the security of a house and her own wealth. However, because the Will was not updated, most of the estate assets were left to charity and the only way that our client could bring a claim was to demonstrate that
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
she had been financially dependent on her partner. This is not the same test for a spouse who would inherit substantially more if there was no Will. We very much suspect that if the deceased had been asked who he had wanted to benefit on his death, he would have said his life partner. However, because his Will was not up to date and even though a settlement was reached between the parties, there was a substantial amount of money that passed to charity, which the law does not protect the cohabitee against. Another case that we dealt with related to a co-habitee who lived with her partner for over 20 years and to the outside world, they were married. Unfortunately, the gentleman never divorced his first wife and he had made a Will approximately 30 years ago which left everything to his wife. The property which the parties lived in was unfortunately held as tenants in common and so on death, our client only owned one half of that property and the husband’s ex-wife owned the other half. The case was very difficult as our client was left devastated by the death of her soulmate but she was also fighting to secure that she had a roof over her head as well as the security of the surroundings around her for years. The Opponent was difficult and the relationship between the parties was fraught with problems. All of the deceased’s pension provision was paid to the wife and the life assurance was also paid to the wife because plans had not been updated. These sorts of cases can have a dramatic effect on the future of your loved ones and family members. Steps should be taken to protect them to ensure that your assets pass to them as you wish and not to somebody
else, but in accordance with your wishes. Over 60 per cent of people still do not have Wills. These scenarios can affect somebody’s ability to continue to live in a property and can also have an impact on the day-to-day living arrangements if there is a loss of income that was relied upon and this cannot be replaced or at least compensated by pensions or Life Assurance Policies. Some of the cases we have dealt with have resulted in the assets passing to the children who are minors and then their mother has had to bring a claim against her children in order to protect herself and give her security of the family property to help to maintain the family unit. Co-habitees are also in the unfortunate position where they do not have the same tax benefits as spouses, so they cannot take the benefit of a nil rate band. Spouses can pass assets to each other tax free on the first death. The recent Budget changes allow more assets to be passed to children without the tax burden of 40 per cent inheritance tax on properties up to the value of £1million. This unfortunately has not, as yet, been extended to co-habiting couples. If you are concerned about a will dispute or would like to talk to our team about any of the topics raised please contact Paula Myers on 0113 394 6832 or email Paula.Myers@IrwinMitchell.com
