See the light ADVENT(URE): EXPLORE THE LEEDS TRAIL OF ART, LIGHT AND MAGIC THIS WINTER. ooking for something different this Christmas? Leeds Business Improvement District (BID) and Welcome to Leeds have collaborated with artists and locations across the city to create an astounding array of light, bright installations to wow you this winter. Fifteen displays that centre around the majesty and festive feelings prompted by light. Whether it’s candles on the table, twinkly fairy lights on the tree or the brash and beautiful streetlights that cheer our streets at this time of year, lights really do have a big impact on festive spirit. But lights are not just the festive twinkle described above – light can be powerful, inspiring and altogether beautiful. As well as the majesty of the tree found in City Square and the beautiful Northern Ballet-sponsored tree you’ll come across in the train station, the Trinity Centre is this year hosting Europe’s largest “Kissmas Tree”. Pucker up beneath this 66 foot-high beauty and watch the tree’s blush spread from its roots to its tip! Throughout November a number of the pieces started appearing in Leeds. Park Square, alongside the elegant and stylish addition of 20,000 tiny white LEDs to the park’s main five trees, Park Square also plays host to a light
L
installation called “Textures of Winter”, designed by artist Alison Smith. Beautiful, fragile-looking lanterns hang silently from the square’s central tree, exuding a gentle, icesharp glow, at once mimicking the warmth of lantern light and the sharp, fragile evolution of ice as it melts, reforms and grows into icicles. Leeds Station is a much less tranquil space, and NEWSUBSTANCE’s SPIRIT exhibition represents an ethereal moment of calm as the non-denominational, raceless and genderless figure, lit up from within, hangs perfectly still above, overlooking the festive hustle and bustle below. Moving on to the Corn Exchange, we will see a light show of epic scale, as The Northern Lights come to Leeds. The domed ceiling of Cuthbert Brodrick’s Grade I-listed space, arching high above, will be lit by the otherworldly, mutable glow of the Aurora Borealis, reminding us that, despite our differences, we will all unite under the same spectacular skies this winter. Echoing the enormity of the skies above, look down into the Corn Exchange’s central recess to see The Glass Cypher’s The Murmuration Cloud, powered by the changing noise levels around and below it.
From installations small and large, we move onto intimate scenes of festivity as David Shearing (of Leeds’ The Weather Café project) invites us to explore “Christmas With Us”. This Wellington Square art installation consists of a 4x4 box, into which you are invited to take a seat at the table, enjoy a moment of reflection and share an intimate conversation over some warm soup. With the help of the Heydays volunteer group, “Christmas With Us” will reveal personal stories, bringing together different members of the community in scenes which will reveal both the beauties, and the difficulties, of this time of year. Head upstairs in the St John’s Centre to discover The Wishing Tree, where Leodians can write messages of positivity, goodwill and hopefulness on seeded paper and hang it from the tree. For something a little more light-hearted and family-friendly, head across the road to the Merrion Centre, where you will encounter Santa’s Post Office. Your children can write a message to Santa with the help of his elves, as well as meet live reindeers along the way. From the ephemeral to the monolithic, delicate to gaudy, refined to child-friendly, Leeds’ Advent[ure] Trail promises to inspire, unite and cheer the people of Leeds right through to Christmas, and beyond. From 1 December till 3 January. Visit http://christmas.welcometoleeds.co.uk for full details. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 7

FROM BEGINNERS TO ASPIRING PROFESSIONALS, THIS IS A SCHOOL WITH A PASSION FOR DANCE, WRITES ROXANNE YOUMAN.
It’s strictly a ten for NLDA t NLDA dancing is not just a hobby, it’s a way of life. From the glitz and glamour of the dance floor, to the school’s unrivalled supportive environment and team spirit, NLDA is about sharing its love and passion for ballroom and Latin dance with everyone willing to give it a try. In the five years since the academy first opened, it has grown from nine students to over 800 dancers, including complete beginners, social dancers, competitors, and even those seeking professional training. NLDA tailors to all ages and abilities, offering ballroom and Latin classes, private tuition, wedding dance choreography, corporate events and competitive coaching. Nicola Andrews, founder of NLDA, began dancing when she was four, starting with disco lessons before turning to ballroom and Latin at the tender age of six. From that moment she was hooked, and achieved the impressive feat of becoming the IDTA national champion – an award that she went on to win ten times. Nicola’s passion and enthusiasm is matched by her experienced and committed team of six instructors. Toni Hughes is an eight-time national winner of the IDTA, and Ping Liem is a Latin finalist across British, European and North American championships. Nicola said: “I am extremely proud of our team, who each bring their own skills, expertise and personality to make our academy a fantastic and inspirational place, they go above and beyond in helping students improve.”

With venues in Horsforth, Roundhay, Alwoodley, Headingly and at the University of Leeds, where they are the official coaches for the University of Leeds Dancesport Team. As Strictly fever reaches its climax and for those looking for an exciting hobby in the New Year, NLDA is launching three new beginner classes in the first week of January 2017. The academy is also thrilled to announce the launch of its classes in Harrogate, with the first beginner class set to start at Harrogate Ladies’ College on Wednesday 4 January 2017. PANTOMIME
There’s more... to come MOLLY McGREEVY SPEAKS TO COMEDIAN JIMMY CRICKET AHEAD OF HIS PANTOMIME PERFORMANCE AS MUDDLES IN SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS.
aving made millions laugh during his 30-year entertainment career, Jimmy Cricket will be bringing comedy to the panto-lovers of Leeds in his role as court jester, Muddles, in the White Rose Theatre’s festive production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Famed for his wrong-footed wellies and ‘and there’s more’ catchphrase, it’s Jimmy’s first pantomime in Leeds, but the ex-Butlins redcoat is a veteran when it comes to getting the audience chuckling. Northside caught up with the comedian during his preparations for the pantomime.
H
Hi Jimmy, how are you feeling in the run up to the panto?
Very much excited, of all the pantomimes, Snow White is quite an enchanting one, along with Cinderella it’s one that people gravitate towards. I’ve never done a panto in a marquee before, but this could be the future. I love the theatre, but if people are going to be at shopping centres in the run up to Christmas then we go to them and we put on a show. What can people expect from the pantomime?
Panto is all about getting all the ingredients right to appeal to everyone – kids, parents, grandparents. We’ve got all sorts, Ken Dodd plays a projection in a mirror – which I have been talking to on my tea breaks. We’ve got Zippy and George as well of course, and Louis Emerick and Tupele Dorgu. Our Prince 18 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
Charming, Scotty T, has chosen Lucy Dures to be his Snow White, I think it’s great we’ve given the part to a local girl. My character Muddles is an uncle figure to Snow White, so the prince can’t have her all to himself. I’m her shoulder to lean on, Scotty will be the love of her life. What is so enjoyable about performing in pantomime?
It’s the camaraderie for me, you’re relating to the other performers and getting lots of fun and comedy from the sketches. I’m excited for the song sheet, once the story is put to bed I get to get some people up and do the song sheet, that’s always a lot of fun. Do you have any other festive projects?
I’ve done a charity Christmas album, ‘Santa Bring My Wellies Back to Me’, with all proceeds going to Francis House Children’s Hospice. There’s ten Christmassy songs, all written by myself, with Mrs Cricket singing on some of them. We’ve got a novelty song about Wilbur the turkey, who puts on a limp to avoid the oven on Christmas Day. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is showing at the White Rose Theatre, on the grounds of the former Tetley brewery, from 8 December 2016 – 1 January 2017. The taste of Christmas WHETHER YOU ARE SHOPPING FOR GREAT PRODUCE OR LOOKING FOR A DELICIOUS FESTIVE MEAL, FARMER COPLEY’S IS THE IDEAL DESTINATION. ow winter is here and Christmas is fast approaching, it’s time for some proper comfort food. Very few things sooth this craving like a hearty pie or tender slices of meat. And at Farmer Copleys, you’ll be delighted to hear that not only can you take their delicious ingredients home, you can also enjoy them in their brand new restaurant. Farm shops and cafes have almost become the norm, but Farmer Copleys is the only farm in the area that offers a more up-market dining experience in the evenings as well. Heather Copley co-owns the farm with her husband Robert, whose great grandparents first bought it over 140 years ago. When the couple took over the business 14 years ago they decided to diversify the farm with various events, including the largest pumpkin festival in the country, and a farm shop with its own on-site butchers. This year, the old barn has been knocked down in place of a brand new build. The farm believes in supporting others in their local community, are always eager to work with other farmers and producers in the area, and even made the conscious decision to work with local builders on the restaurant building. The main dining area is furnished in agricultural themed cow-hides and other natural fabrics to reflect their home-grown ethos, with a 12-person capacity private room available for hire upstairs. restaurant pride themselves on creating honest British dishes with a unique twist. “We launched the restaurant with a MasterChef event and the team created some phenomenal flavours,” says Heather. “The menu will be full of seasonal dishes and will change weekly so there’s always something new to try. “Game and steaks are a big part of what we do at the moment and we are very fortunate to have a beef butchery on-site. We
will also have a different fish dish every week and a wide wine list. “We started the restaurant because it’s the sort of thing you couldn’t get without driving into the city centre. Now, you can enjoy views of the countryside and be confident that all of the delicious food on your plate, including the vegetables, is prepared right here on the premises.” Restaurant manager Neil Gover has been in the food industry for seven years and has worked in some of the biggest hotel restaurants in the country including the Longleat Group Hotels. More recently, he helped set up the deli shop at Filmore & Union in Leeds’ Victoria Quarter, which is renowned for its healthy and tasty recipes – key elements he looks forward to instilling in Farmer Copleys. “We are hoping to create something comforting and delicious, but we also want to challenge people’s taste buds,” says Neil. With delicious festive meals available to book right up to Christmas, delicious fresh produce and a private dining area, there are plenty of things to love about Farmer Copleys this season. You can even do some serene Christmas shopping at the farm shop and cheese deli area in the evenings – imagine that. DECK THE HALLS WITH STYLE SPARKLY WHIMSY OR MINIMALIST ELEGANCE – HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE? RACHEL MARTIN HAS SOME IDEAS. t’s almost time to heave home a Nordmann fir, dust off the baubles, grab a sherry and stick on Last Christmas for the annual tree-decorating ritual. But how should you go about dressing it? During the holiday season, the Christmas tree is the shining centrepiece of the home,
I
and just as fashion fads ebb and flow, so do the latest trimming trends. If you’re looking for inspirational ways to freshen up your fir this season, here are some of our favourite ways to spruce up your spruce. Traditionalists, be warned: when it comes to being on trend this season, there’s not a shred of tinsel in sight.
FRESH-CUT AND AU NATUREL
Minimalist A simply decorated, sculptural tree complements a modern, streamlined interior. Consider a tight selection of ornaments in similar tones, such as shades of green, blue or plum. Choose similar shapes in varying textures to create visual interest and tiny white twinkle lights for a sophisticated glow.
Nothing beats the nostalgic fragrance of a fresh-cut fir or spruce. Showcase the natural beauty of your tree with forest-inspired pine cones, dried fruit, spices and other natural materials, and make beautiful, rustic alternatives to traditional ornaments that, when combined, create a delicious holiday fragrance.
Warm Metals Silver and gold may be a celebrated holiday palette, but this year copper and rose gold are even more on trend. Save the silver for another year and add sparkle to your tree with copper stars, rose-gold balls and other ornaments in coordinating champagne, pastel pink and pale yellow gold hues.
Woodland
White Christmas
Consider it a nod to the adorableness of Bambi: the deer is a major player in holiday decor this season. Joined by a cast of woodland characters think owls, squirrels and other Christmas critters when trimming the tree. Add elements of earthy brown and hessian, or go upscale with feathers and a dusting of gold, and you have the tree trend of the season.
We all love a white Christmas, and it’s a go-to colour for some elegant festivities. Create a wonderland theme in your home with firs in shades of silver, grey and white, and plenty of snowdusted ornaments, glass baubles and icicles.

FEATURE
Bring out the colour Even if you don't embrace colour in your everyday decorating, Christmas is the one time of year you can go overboard. Look for ornaments in bold blues, bright greens, pinks and purples and pair them with metallics, like silver and gold for a festive tree that is sure to draw attention.
BLOOMING Visit your local craft store for an array of similarly-hued silk flowers, like rich red garden roses, peonies, hydrangea and gerber daisies. Mould the flowers into a garland, or scatter throughout the branches with an assortment of wellplaced ornaments. Top the tree with a richly textured ribbon for a high-end designer look.
Pre-lit A Christmas tree is certainly beautiful and festive, but decorating it can be a real pain. Instead of wasting your time struggling with tangled lights, why not give a pre-lit Christmas tree a try?
Spray-Paint Add a touch of whimsy to your own tree with fun painted designs, like white branch tips, top-to-bottom colour or an ombre effect.
Rustic chic Mix it up this year by replacing your usual tree skirt with a repurposed container, such as a vintage wine crate or galvanized wash tub. Drape a layer of coordinating fabric between the container and tree for a polished look.
Vintage There’s no better time for some sentimentality than at Christmas. Be inspired by heritage Christmas collections with colour palettes of red, gold and green and plenty of tartan and red velvet. Be sure to dig out any time honoured family heirlooms to add to the Christmas tree.
THINK SMALL Short on space? A grouping of small, fresh-cut table-top trees in varying heights serves as an elegant replacement for a single six-footer. Smaller trees also serve as beautiful secondary decorations and a lovely way to dress up your front porch for the holiday season. Keep them simple with twinkle lights only, simple garlands or a few ornaments in one or two colours.

ONE WEEK BEFORE Do-ahead Christmas dinner
We all know the feeling. It’s Christmas Day, but rather than enjoying a glass of wine or catching up with family, you’re peeling carrots, boiling brussels and hoping you’ll have time to get the cranberry sauce out of your hair before the turkey needs basting. With a little pre-planning, such chaos can be a ghost of Christmas past, as there’s plenty of elements – i.e. gravy, stuffing, bread sauce and desserts – that can be prepared days, if not weeks, ahead.

They care for over 2,500 people a year, providing InPatient care, community services, complementary therapies, a day hospice facility and much more. Party season perfected MORGAN CLARE HAVE PUT TOGETHER THEIR FAVOURITE LOOKS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON. ith the imminent arrival of a month of parties we need to start planning what we’ll be wearing. It’s our favourite time of year here at Morgan Clare, we love the festive season and all of the dressing up it brings. There are so many different fashion avenues to go down this year, from sequins to plaids, from leather skinnies to embroidered dresses, from strappy boots to slinky stilettos, the options are endless. What we love most at Christmas is, more is more. Of course, a little black dress is always a good option for any party occasion but forget the pared-down look of previous seasons, this time it has to be supercharged with big ruffles, the go-to fabric – velvet – or even metallic accessories. Now’s the time to throw sartorial caution to the wind when thinking of your outfits – pile on the metallics and glitter; it’s the season to be jolly after all. To get you thinking ahead to avoid any last-minute party dressing dilemmas we’ve picked our favourite outfits for the main social events of the winter.

pened in 1984 by Christine Thompson on Leeds Road in Harrogate, Traveltalk has always focused on quality – specialising in luxury, tailor-made and activity/adventure holidays. Over the subsequent years they have built up a loyal client base, many of whom have become friends. Thanks to the infectious enthusiasm and attention to detail by the team, Traveltalk has thrived and become a well-respected and award-winning agency. Kevin became a partner in 2006 and with Ben as manager, Traveltalk continues to flourish and improve. Proud to be truly independent, they have, between them, travelled to all corners of this fascinating globe. Traveltalk still find travel far too inspiring to be just another high-street shop, and too concerned that client’s travel arrangements should be exceptional, individual and troublefree to be just another site on your PC. As members of ABTA you can rest assured your travel arrangements are in safe hands. So, call Ben, Chris, Jane, Katherine, Kevin and Sue and let them turn your time away into a lifetime’s memories.

TOUR DE FORCE
CHRIS WILSON STAYS ON THE MOVE BY TRAIN, BUS AND BOAT TO SEE THE SIGHTS IN SWITZERLAND. hatever happened to the Grand Tour? Back in the 17th century, wealthy English gentlemen would spend several months travelling across Europe, accruing knowledge and purchasing beautiful antiques and carpets to furnish their country estates back home. Nowadays, even if budgets are not an issue, we tend to settle for a single location. Unpack, head for the pool, and return home a fortnight later, several shades darker but no wiser. It’s a habit that has not gone unnoticed among our continental cousins. As I checked in to one hotel for a single night’s stay on a whistlestop tour of Switzerland, my host was vexed about the holiday habits of the archetypal Brit abroad. “Why do you stay in one place? You should see more of the country you are staying in,” I was told. I didn’t need the lecture; she was preaching to the converted. Have suitcase on wheels will travel…that’s my motto. Mind you, it does make it a lot easier when the country you are visiting is Switzerland, where the trains, buses and boats always run on time and itineraries can be planned with total confidence. Just to make the travel easier, you can buy

a Swiss Pass for unlimited travel on eight consecutive days on railways, boats and most alpine postbuses, covering a network of 16,000km. The Swiss Pass also allows a half price reduction on all privately owned funicular and mountain railways and free entrance to 450 museums. It really is the ultimate ticket to ride. On arrival at Zurich airport, it was a short stroll to the adjoining railway station and half an hour by train to the sleepy town of Kusnacht and the Romantik Seehotel Sonne. Dating back to 1641, the picturesque location on Lake Zurich was mesmerising and the hotel’s private bathing area was irresistible on a scorching July day. The water was crystal clear – very refreshing and with nothing but the occasional steam boat gliding by to make ripples on the water – and a quick dip was Grimsel Hospiz
the perfect way to unwind. Dinner on the terrace, watching the sun set and the lights from small towns across the bay start to twinkle, added to my sense of wellbeing. Food and wine, I realised, was going to be a major plus point. Throughout the tour I ate incredibly well on outstanding local produce including home-smoked salmon, veal, river fish and berries. The wine, meanwhile, was a revelation. It is produced in all 26 Cantons, although not in sufficient volume that you are likely to find it imported to your local supermarket. So, make the most of it: many patriotic bars and restaurants stock only Swiss wines, and that is no hardship when the choice includes creamy sparkling Cremands, flinty Rieslings and smooth rich Merlots. After that first night, I awakened to a ridiculously perfect chocolate-box view of mountains, lake, blue skies and fluffy clouds. So I checked out with some sadness, but I had an itinerary to follow and a series of trains, boats and buses to catch. The next few days passed in a blur of activity with fresh highlights around every corner. Whatever our mode of transport, the views were amazing and if some, even for
TRAVEL
first time visitor, were eerily familiar, it might have been because some of Switzerland’s most picturesque scenery is much loved by TV and film location scouts. So, at various times, we found ourselves in the same spot as some of fiction’s most memorable action scenes involving legendary heroes and villains. On one train journey through the Beernese Oberland region, we found ourselves looking up at the Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes and his arch rival Professor Moriarty fought and perished in a dramatic death plunge onto the rocks below… until a disapproving public demanded that logic be defied and Holmes was resurrected in a later story. Perhaps the most spectacular hotel on our tour was the Grimsel Hospiz, perched at 2000m in the middle of bleakly beautiful rocky landscape on the turquoise waters of an artificial lake which is built on top of a hydro-electric dam. We travelled by train and bus, then the hotel’s mini bus took us through the dizzying steep mountain roads. It came as no surprise to learn that James Bond and Blofeld had battled it out on these very same twisting roads in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The hotel is accessible only by cable car in winter and is so remote that skiing is too dangerous. People come to revel in the luxurious hotel and watch the scenery. This being high summer, we simply drove on a road blasted through the rock, arriving at our mountain retreat not quite able to believe our eyes. Don’t miss those views, but also don’t miss the wine cellar of which the owners are rightly proud. A more sedate mode of arrival, though just as exciting in its own way, is the steam boat to Lucerne, which is worth a walking tour for its hidden alleys, teeming town squares and beautifully preserved 13th century city walls. Summer in Switzerland means there are, of course, mountains to climb, and it was appropriate that we ended our truncated version of the Grand Tour in Zermatt, the town that started it all. The Matterhorn dominates the view here and there are wonderful summer walks for all levels of fitness.

The Reichenback Falls
However, if you simply want to take in the view, there is a train up to Gornergat at an altitude of 3,089m. We were staying at the Monte Rosa hotel, which was the mountaineering base of Edward Whymper, the man who made the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn. Legend has it that Queen Victoria disapproved of such dangerous leisure pursuits and pronounced that it must stop. To anyone with a remotely rebellious taste for adventure this was just the incentive needed – and hardy hikers have been coming to Zermatt to tackle the Matterhorn and the less challenging lower ranges ever since. Zermatt is a quirky town. Local farmers still drive their goats down the main street every day, but the glitzy bars and restaurants are testament to the fact that this is one of Switzerland’s most fashionable resorts, winter and summer. But while the town may be buzzing the one thing you won’t hear is the roar of the internal combustion engine. Cars are banned, although you can always find an electric buggy at the station to transport you and your luggage to the hotel. And that seems a suitably strange final stop on this truncated version of the Grand Tour.

A slice of Sicilian heaven FROM GORGEOUS SEA VIEWS TO GASTRONOMIC EXCELLENCE, THE BELMOND VILLA SANT’ ANDREA IS THE PERFECT SPOT TO EXPLORE THIS ITALIAN ISLAND. slice of pure heaven, Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea was built in the 1800s by an English constructor of railways as a summer residence. His son transformed the property into a hotel in the 1950s. It is therefore fitting that it was subsequently bought by Orient Express, the company responsible for the most iconic railway journeys and opulent trains in the world. In 2014, the hotel was re-named Belmond Sant’Andrea, when the company re-branded. Today, this beautiful property, privately situated on the Bay of Mazzaro, is surrounded with tropical flowers in the magnificent gardens that grace the building. Inside, light is everywhere: it fills the 65 rooms, bathes the Sicilian marble floors, reflects off the Murano glass and catches the loud ceramics from Caltagirone, the aquamarine blues and citrus yellows, a perfect serenade to the island’s colours. The staff, headed by charming and approachable general manager Giovanni Nastasi, are exemplary. No request, large or small, is a problem, and the famously seamless Belmond service is impeccable. The rooms at Sant’Andrea are sumptuous, with impossibly perfect views over the bay, enjoyed from flower-filled wrought iron

Food at the Sant’Andrea is out of this world. Breakfast is taken on the terrace and is a highlight of the day. A massive spread of yoghurts, cheeses, fresh fruits, berries, breads, locally produced honey and preserves, plus a full a la carte menu and the best coffee you

If you wish to eat out, there are a number of nearby authentic restaurants and trattorias, serving delicious and affordable dishes. Belmond Hotels are child friendly. Buckets and spades, snorkels and fins are provided on the beach. There is a Children’s Club, set amongst the gardens, with plenty to keep the little ones busy. Cots are provided, together with a welcome gift and a gorgeous selection of gift-wrapped baby toiletries. Baby sitting services are available, payable by the hour, and there’s a children’s menu. For the grown ups, there’s also plenty to do… Learn to sail, take a surf board out, or sit on the private shingle beach, the sea at your toes, and then perhaps drift off to your balcony overlooking the sea, to drink a glass of ice-cold white wine from the slopes of neighbouring Mount Etna. Or take a private cabana on the beach, furnished with sofas and a fully-stocked fridge, plus a waiter on hand for anything else you may need. The heated swimming pool is to the right of the property, and has its own bar area and sun loungers, again with stunning views across the bay. For the more energetic types, there is a fully-equipped gym with several cardio machines, a small spa, and complimentary boat tours of the surrounding islands and

Or ask the concierge to book you a Fiat 500 and explore the nearby picturesque towns of Modica and Noto and visit the original film setting for The Godfather movie. Or take the cable car, a few minutes walk away, for a three-minute catapult up to Taormina (for the faint-hearted, a free shuttle service will drive you there every 30 minutes throughout the day and evening). The sister hotel, Grand Hotel Timeo is worth visiting, for a dinner overlooking the twinkling lights of the town and the Mediterranean sea in the distance, with Mount Etna as a backdrop. Be sure to go early enough to catch the magnificent sunset and sip a cocktail surrounded by manicured terraced gardens and exotic blooms. Taormina has bucket-loads of atmosphere; charming café-lined streets, winding passages, frescoed cathedrals and trattorias galore. Designer boutiques mingle with smaller artisan shops, ice cream parlours and wooden crafts. During the season, there’s Italian opera in the square, and jazz nights in several of the bars. The ancient Greek theatre is well worth a visit. It was founded in the third century BC and affording incredible views of Mount Etna and the Bay of Mazzaro.

Fantastic fish PHOEBE SEYMOUR GETS TO GRIPS WITH THE SEAFOOD AT CHARLIE BRETTS. eafood restaurants tend to fall into two catagories - the first is the casual, family-friendly fish and chip resturant, whilst the second is the more upmarket restaurant, which couples and groups of friends save for special occasions. Thankfully, Charlie Brett's is a bit of both. Though it has been a firmly-established and award-winning brand in Leeds since 1919, the Alwoodley restaurant was given a modern makeover last year. Set in a suburban housing area, outside of the hustle and bustle of the city, it's certainly a hidden gem. Up until recently it was only open in the evenings, but now customers can sit in and enjoy a Mediterranean-inspired seafood lunch or order a traditional British battered cod and chips to take away. Recently refurbished with a brand-new a la carte menu, Charlie Bretts has a classy and contemporary dining area and bar which stocks a wide range of wines and beers, as well as an even wider selection of gins to match their varied new food menu. Whilst deciding what to order, my dining companion and I nibbled on soft slices of oily bread, topped with rock salt, which we washed down with a couple a refreshing Harrogate-made Slingsby gin and Fever Tree tonics (£6.50) – well, when in Yorkshire! I started with the tempura soft shell crab with lemon and garlic aioli (£6.90), which
S

though de-shelled, was impressively shaped like a full crab, complete with light and crisp legs and claws on a bed of salad. My companion meanwhile, had the day's catch – king prawns in a chilli and garlic butter (£7.90), which, as the description suggests, were fresh enough to suggest they had come straight from the sea and onto her plate. For mains, my companion had the seared fresh tuna steak with a nicoise salad (£11.50) and I had the Charlie Brett's Fish Pie with a Swaledale champ mash (£10.50). Not being able to resist sampling the more traditional take-away dishes, I also ordered a side of chip shop chips (£2) and mushy peas (£2). My pie had a more-ish and buttery mash, filled with cod and salmon, along with spring onions and fennel giving it an aromatic flavour. My companion's tuna steak was just as delicious. Crisp and salty on the outside, juicy in the middle and served on a bed of seasonal vegetables, it perfectly demonstrated the calibre of their more up-market dinner dishes. Of course, this didn't stop her trying a few chip shop chips and peas. For dessert, my companion had the baked custard tart with marscapone and figs (£4.90) and I had the waffles with warm berry compote and Bailey's ice cream (£4.90). My companion was delighted with her tart and particularly enjoyed the dustings of nutmeg on top. I enjoyed the sour, warm berriness of
my compote and noted how well it went with the sugary sweetness of the waffle. The bar and restaurant supervisor and our waiter, Ben Bejjih, told us that all of Charlie Brett's ingredients were sourced locally whenever possible, including the ice cream, which is made at Yorvale Farm in North Yorkshire. From their traditional fish and chips, to their finer seafood dishes, it’s easy to see why Charlie Brett's has been around as long as it has. Both types of dishes will satisfy your comfort food cravings this winter – and they are still taking bookings for Christmas and New Year's Eve. The taste of Thailand MOLLY McGREEVY DISCOVERS THAT AUTHENTICITY IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY AT SUKHOTHAI t was at the street markets of Bangkok that Ban Kaewkraikhot sold her first meal; from there she went on to own her first restaurant in the city for eight years, before bringing her fresh, authentic Thai food to Yorkshire. Sukhothai’s flagship restaurant, the Chapel Allerton branch, is where Ban first brought Thai food to Leeds in 2002. Since then the restaurant has undergone many an expansion and, despite its ever increasing number of covers, was a tranquil of calm during our visit. A water feature trickles peacefully along the back wall, whilst the chefs work quietly from the open kitchen, traditional Thai music plays and ornate, colourful statues are dotted between tables. Pat, who has managed the restaurant for ten years, explains that under normal circumstances the staff uniforms would reflect the same Thai grandeur of the decorations, but our visit to Sukhothai fell within the period of mourning after the death of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, so the staff were wearing black as a sign of respect. With authentic prawn crackers at the table we waited with anticipation for our starters – the pak tod (£5.25) and tod mun pla
I
(£6.25). The pak tod was simply divine. Crunchy, sweet vegetables in a light, crispy batter with a sweet chilli dip. Across the table, my companion’s fishcakes were full of flavour, and a crispy salad and sweet chilli and ground peanut sauce provided the perfect accompaniment. Attention to detail in presentation was second-to-none, my pad see aew pak (£8.95), a stir fry with vegetables and tofu – or bean curd as the ingredient is known in Thailand – came adorned with tomatoes sculpted into blossoming flowers. The dish itself was rich in flavour, with smoky undertones to the taste and a plethora of vegetables bringing colour to the plate. For my companion it was one of Sukhothai’s signature dishes – the gai tod prik gang (£10.50), one of the most popular items on the menu. Tender, deep-fried, sliced chicken lathered in a creamy, red curry sauce was spiced perfectly to taste, despite the dish being graded as one of the hottest on the menu. Keen to keep my meal authentic, Thailand’s national dessert, mango and sweet sticky rice (£4.95), was an obvious choice to end on. As we ate, Pat explained that the dessert was most commonly eaten in the summer in
Thailand and the quality of the mango used could either make, or break, the dessert. In Sukhothai’s case, the mango was juicy and refreshing, atop a bed of sticky rice. Not one to miss out on dessert, a mouthful of my companion’s caramelised banana (£4.95) was warm, sweet and comforting. Despite their growing success, the team at Sukhothai have not forgotten their Thai roots. From the top class welcome through to the chefs and décor, everything feels, looks and tastes authentic, Ban may have moved thousands of miles away from the streets of Bangkok, but she has brought the true taste of Thailand to Yorkshire with her. Food for thought CHRIS WILSON DISCOVERS WHY SO MANY HAVE TAKEN TO THE FAIRFAX ARMS, A PUB RECENTLY VOTED THE ‘THIRD BEST IN YORKSHIRE’. ne day I’ll return in daylight to Gilling East for a gentle stroll around what I am assured is a very pretty village, nestling in the prime walking territory of the Howardian Hills and just a few miles from the historic market town of Helmsley. But on this occasion, having arrived late, dishevelled and in total darkness after a roadworks-plagued drive, I can only deliver a verdict on the village pub… and it’s a bit of a gem, new to me but obviously not to the readers of the newspaper who rated The Fairfax Arms the third finest in Yorkshire. There’s obviously some stiff competition out there but it did not take long to discover why so many people have taken this smart, tucked-away tavern to their hearts. For starters it’s a proper pub, which means that while it may win accolades for its AA rosette winning food (more on which to follow shortly) and its 12 individually styled bedrooms, it is still a friendly, understated sort of place where local drinkers are treated with equal importance as out-of-town diners. This was a point made by my old friend Heather as we acquainted ourselves with the menus in a comfortable lounge area just around the corner from the bar. “It’s really nice to still be able to hear the chatter from the bar and not feel cut off from what’s going on,” she said. I couldn’t agree more.
O
Real fires and wooden beams are the order of the day here, but while the design may be old-style cosiness, the menu is rather more ambitious with a winning blend of comfort food staples and classic dishes with a fine dining flourish. For starters we opted for a seafood sharing platter (£8.25 per person) and came up trumps with a glorious selection of smoked salmon, prawn cocktail, haddock goujons and baked queenie scallops. Everything was sparkling fresh, the haddock and scallops were cooked to perfection, and the salmon was salty, slightly sweet and flaky. Standards were maintained with two highly delicious and expertly cooked main courses. I stayed on the seafood track with a generous slab of red wine poached halibut, served on a parsnip rosti with pickled wild mushrooms and fish stock jus. The fish was still moist and breaking into it, revealing the pure white flesh beneath the wine darkened coating, was a nice moment of food theatre. Across the table, Heather was revelling in a duo of Yorkshire duck (£18.95) – pan seared breast and confit leg boulanger – with pumpkin mash and blue cheese sauce. Served pink with charred skin, the richness of the meat combined with the sweet mash and sharp sauce to create a well-balanced plate. Side dishes were perhaps a little greedy but the seasonal vegetables (£2.50) were fresh and skinny fries (£2.50) as crisp and
indulgent as they should be. For dessert the simple Italian classic affogato (£4.95), a single espresso with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, was made memorable by the sheer quality of the ingredients, and in this case by the addition of an exceptional, slightly chewy home-made biscotti. Lemon meringue glaze (£5.95), a sundae glass filled with lemon curd, Chantilly cream, lemon ice cream and glazed meringue, was light and tangy. There was plenty of food for thought on the way home, not least the fact that The Fairfax Arms was only voted third in that competition. If there really are two better pubs Yorkshire they must be pretty spectacular. Fairfax Arms Main Street, Gilling East, York, YO62 4JH Tel: 01439 788212 www.thefairfaxarms.co.uk

With a wonderful concentration of unique, independent businesses in a relatively small area, it’s a great place to grab those special
gifts for loved ones of all ages while maintaining some of that festive spirit. And if your energy levels flag, Harrogate has some superb food and drink outlets ready to come to the rescue – whether it’s a simple cup of coffee and a slice of cake or a fullblown meal. They say real shopping is only partly about acquiring objects. It’s about getting a feel for an area, finding unexpected gems, looking and touching, revisiting old haunts and discovering new favourites. If you think those types of pleasures are long gone, take a closer look at what is on offer in Harrogate this Christmas and prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

Mans Market opened for business on 7 November and promises to make you fall in love with Chinese food all over again, with a hip new approach to the entire dining experience and over 100 covers. Drawing inspiration from around the globe, entrepreneur and Candypants founder Ray Chan says the concept was born from his adventures in Hong Kong and New York City. Located in the newly-developed West Point area of the city centre, the handsome décor would mean nothing without a well-crafted menu and an ambitious chef to bring it to life. Consisting of remixed versions of popular Chinese dishes the menu has wide appeal, and the bar boasts a laidback bar area serving handcrafted cocktails and beers.

IN BRIEF
NLDA launches new classes in Harrogate
Come and Sing big hit at Harrogate Ladies’ College Following the success of Come and Sing events in recent years, Harrogate Ladies’ College invited choral singers from across the region to enjoy an afternoon of singing followed by an evening concert. Led by the school’s Chapel Choir, who were semi-finalists in last year’s BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year Competition, a selection of choral favourites was sung including the 'Hallelujah Chorus', ‘And the Glory of the Lord' from Handel’s Messiah and the opening movement of Vivaldi’s Gloria. A retiring collection was taken after the concert and a total of £600 was raised for Hope and Homes for Children, a small charity that works to find family homes for children in institutional care in Eastern Europe.
North Leeds Dance Academy is thrilled to announce the launch of its classes in Harrogate, which will run in conjunction with NLDA Leeds, providing Harrogate and the surrounding areas with fabulous and inspirational UKA and IDTA accredited ballroom and Latin dance tuition. NLDA Harrogate launches its grand opening on Wednesday 4 January, from 19.00-22.00, with an evening packed full of new classes for everyone to come along and try. Why not start the New Year off with a bang? If you are interested in registering for NLDA's launch night or would like further information on our classes and lessons, contact: roxie@nlda.co.uk www.nlda.co.uk Tel: 01132806011
Council scoops top Municipal Journal awards Leeds City Council has been named as Local Authority of the Year by respected local government publication Municipal Journal (MJ). The council was commended by the judges for its ‘consistent and dynamic leadership’ with ‘a clear improvement vision’ especially in to regard to regeneration and health inequalities. The judges of the award noted that winning in this category highlights a local authority’s success not just in one department or project, but right across the council. The council was also recognised with two other notable awards on the night. This included children’s services claiming the ‘Innovation and Impact’ prize, and the council named with Sevenoaks District Council as joint winner of the ‘Commercialism in Property Estate’ award.
Froebelian School raises cash to make wishes come true Pupils at The Froebelian School in Horsforth have raised an astonishing £8,074 for The Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to transform and enrich the lives of seriously ill children. In the last academic year, the whole school community held a number of fund raising events, having been inspired by the story of Luke Harrison who has been diagnosed with leukaemia. Headteacher Catherine Dodds said: “Watching Luke and his family battle against his leukaemia and seeing how they all benefitted from the wonderful work of Make-A-Wish, was the reason I selected it as last year’s chosen charity. The amount we have raised will pay for at least two children and their families from our area, currently living with a serious illness, to have their wish granted for the holiday or experience of their dreams.”

COMPETITION
Winner Christine Vincent with her daughter-inlaw Lindsey (left) and with staff from RMC Media and My Fathers Heart (below) – and prizes
30 years... we have a winner AFTER MONTHS OF ANTICIPATION AND THOUSANDS OF ENTRIES, A WINNER WAS CHOSEN FOR OUR FABULOUS 30TH ANNIVERSARY WINNER-TAKES-ALL GIVEAWAY. hen Christine Vincent saw the incredible selection of prizes up for grabs in RMC Media’s winner-takesall 30th anniversary competition, she nearly didn’t bother entering. And while she was right to assume that thousands of readers from our range of nine monthly titles would also have a go, she did well to follow her more positive instincts... because hers was the first name out of the hat. Our competition – with 30 superb prizes donated by independent businesses from across the region – has been the centrepiece of RMC Media’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year. The grand finale came when Christine joined us for a champagne reception in the showroom of RMC Media’s media partner, My Fathers Heart, to celebrate her success and see the superb selection of prizes on display. Christine, who lives in Doncaster and is a regular reader of our Eastside magazine, said she was still in a state of shock when she
came along, with her daughter-in-law Lindsey, to collect her prizes. Joining in the celebrations were representatives from RMC Media and My Fathers Heart and Jackie Gill from Bradfield Brewery, who donated 30 bottles of the limited edition Thirty Something ale, brewed specially to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Harriet Coulthard from My Fathers Heart said: “It was lovely for us as a company to be able to host such a happy occasion, and to see Christine so thrilled to receive all those great prizes.” Over the next few months our special winner can look forward to living the high life, thanks to a package of prizes that includes race days, holidays, hotel stays, jewellery, luxurious food and enough fizz to stage a very special celebration party for family and friends. “I get Eastside every month and read it right through. When I saw all those prizes I thought, ‘I’ll never win it, but I’ll give it a go.’ And then when I was told I’d won I couldn’t
believe it. I’ve not been able to sleep, I’m so excited. All the prizes look great and they’ve come just in time for Christmas.” As her good fortune begins to sink in, Christine is already starting to think about which prizes she is going to keep, and which will be shared with family and friends. “I am looking forward to the flights to Guernsey and also staying at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry, which is near where I live, so I am saving that for my birthday,” she said. “I’m going to share most of the prizes with my family. Lindsey is taking her nieces to see Diversity in Leeds, my partner Martin McNicholas and my son-in-law Richard Whitticker will be doing the adventure day at Yorkshire Outdoors and my son, David Glenn Vincent, will have the Bailey bracelet and then the boys will enjoy the 30 bottles of beer between them – I’m keeping the watch from PA Jewellery for myself!” And so she should. Congratulations Christine.

NORTHERN NIGHTS
Merrion Centre lights up Leeds as thousands of visitors help to kick off Christmas festivities he Merrion Centre was packed to the rafters as thousands of people turned out to enjoy a fun-filled evening of celebrities and performers, and some lucky people even walked away with an all-expenses paid trip to see Justin Bieber perform in Barcelona. The Radio Aire breakfast show team hosted the Christmas event alongside Leeds United duo Tyler Denton and Ronaldo Vieira. The pair were joined by the cast of Leeds White Rose Theatre’s pantomime, Snow White, including Geordie Shore’s Scotty T, well-loved comedian Jimmy Cricket, Lucy Dures (Snow White), and Emmerdale favourites Michelle Hardwick, Amy Walsh and Gemma Atkinson. After appearing on stage, Ronaldo and Denton headed down to the Leeds United Superstore for a photo and signing session. The duo then returned to the stage with the other famous faces, to press the big red button to illuminate the Merrion Centre’s Christmas decorations.

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org
Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £30m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.qesportsvillage.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
A LEVEL RESULTS 2016 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 87% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 84% A*/B - A level results - 96% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 80% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 40% of the fees
Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.
QE £30m Sports Village Elite Sports Academy Awards worth upto £7,000 Day or boarding, upto 100%. Membership costs of Elite Sports Academies for: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Rugby, Swimming.
