Don’t be scared – we’re here to help Looking for a hassle-free solution to divorce? David Milburn, Managing Partner at Stowe Family Law, is on hand to guide you in the right direction.

C

hange is never easy, but the decision to split up or divorce your spouse is one of the most traumatic changes a person will face. At Stowe Family Law we see people every day who have made the decision and are looking for guidance on how to move forward. The first thing I would say is that you will move forward and it will get better, even if it doesn’t seem so at this point. Our solicitors are here to help, to guide you through the legalities and to protect your interests. To that end, it’s best to approach the relationship as a partnership, where we will look after the legal concerns while you concentrate on getting your life back on track. It’s really useful when a client comes in for the first time if they can explain exactly why they’re splitting up or getting divorced. This helps our solicitors help you to work through the best options. That might be a traditional lawyer-assisted divorce, or it might be a different avenue. For example, our partner firm, Stowe Family Law Settlements is dedicated to helping people whose relationships have collapsed, but want to avoid lengthy and costly time in court. There are nine ‘lawyer mediators’ who combine mediation with family law expertise to resolve a range of family law issues and it’s an increasingly popular option. These mediation services are available at all our offices in central London, Leeds, Harrogate, Wetherby, Hale, Wilmslow and St Albans. Bear in mind some options will be appropriate in your unique circumstances and some won’t, so do your research, seek out expert advice and work out what will work practically both in terms of cost and how acrimonious or amicable the divorce is. I know that the prospect of divorce is daunting and the first time you visit a solicitor makes the idea of walking away from a relationship that you’ve probably worked hard on, suddenly a tangible reality. Even if you haven’t made a final decision

NS • page 6

regarding whether to divorce it’s always prudent to take advice. I generally find that most of my clients walk out of the initial appointment feeling much better and with a much better idea of where they stand. They are then best placed to make an informed decision regarding the next steps. Here at Stowe Family Law our values are based on client care and client contact. You are an individual and your circumstances are unique. Every divorce is different and that’s the way we treat each new client. Remember, if you’ve taken the decision to go through this big change, let us worry about what the law requires and you can concentrate on what you and your family need.

“It’s best to approach the relationship as a partnership, where we will look after the legal concerns while you concentrate on getting your life back on track.”

Perfect pieces From ball gowns and beading to bohemia and lace, you’ll find everything you need to complete your day at The Bridal Collection.

H

aving moved to gorgeous grade II listed premises overlooking The Stray last summer, The Bridal Collection offers the discerning bride everything she needs to look and feel a million dollars on her big day. Within the beautifully spacious, luxurious boutique, you’ll not only find the most fabulous collection of designer wedding apparel but also impeccable service from bridal specialist and owner Hayley Hoyle and former personal shopper Arnya Wootton. Showcasing an extensive collection of the UK’s most desirable talent – and hand-picked international designers – they have a style to suit every bride.

From British favourites Jenny Packham, Suzanne Neville, Ian Stuart and Sassi Holford to Caroline Castigliano and Claire Pettibone, you’re spoilt for choice. The 2015 trends are simply stunning, as Hayley explains. “The ball gown is very much back. Think nipped-in waistlines with layers and layers of soft silk organza skirts for a soft, floaty, flowing look. Sassi Holford, Suzanne Neville and Caroline Castigliano in particular really excel in these styles. With these designers, beading and sparkle is minimal as it’s all about the cut, the luxury fabric and the beautiful laces.” At the opposite end of the spectrum is Jenny Packham, renowned for her vintage glamour, sparkles and slinky silhouettes. Hailing from an eveningwear background, she designs elegant, manageable gowns, simply made for the evening’s dancing and festivities.

Admission is by appointment only so call 01423 202029 to reserve your place. In the meantime, for a taste of what awaits at The Bridal Collection, don’t hesitate to visit the website www.thebridalcollectionharrogate.com. “Brides tend to choose one style or the other but some are even opting for a structured, typically bridal gown by day – such as a Suzanne Neville – and then changing into a Jenny Packham when night falls,” says Hayley. Yorkshire born and bred Ian Stuart is all about his signature flamboyant looks. Celebrating haute couture and avant garde styles, he’s the designer of choice for big personalities yearning for something a little different. His use of colour, embellishment and frills is second to none. For the bohemian bride who wishes to channel festival chic on her special day, Claire Pettibone has the answer. Unstructured

NS Eyewear

Bespoke Eyewear specialises in unique brands you won’t find anywhere else and can help you find a pair of glasses that are sure to give you the wow factor.

Get the perfect look

A

nyone who wears glasses understands just how vital finding the right pair is. At Bespoke Eyewear in Harrogate, Jonathan Nixon realises this. In his fifth year of trade, Jonathan has been pushing the philosophy that ‘your eyewear is your identity’. He says: “At first when you open your shop, you think you should cater for everyone, I soon realised this was not the case. I am in a fortunate position that people like my styles which show my flair, creativity and imagination. It is an art. You have to be bold, have good judgement and imagination on what is going to look good on clients.” As such he scours the world for the most unique brands that cannot be found anywhere else in the region. Currently stocking brands such as Res Rei, Kilsgaard, Oscar Magnuson, Orgreen, Yellow Plus and Oko, it is by no means a falsehood to claim that Bespoke Eyewear specialises in exclusivity. “I really want people to see the incredible designers in the world and for my clients to be stopped and asked ‘Wow! Where did you get those glasses’, that is really important to me. After all, my clients are walking adverts for my business.” The success of this ethos is why he can boast customers nationally, and as far away as Europe, Miami, New York, Wyoming, Easter Island and Australia. While speaking to Jonathan in his

NS • page 32

store, our chat was interrupted by some customers, which gave me a chance to see him in action. It was undeniably impressive. Jonathan walks his clients through finding the perfect frames to match their look. Going through a range of styles and designs he quickly finds something that the customer is happy with. His relaxed nature gives clients the chance to make a clear decision and leave happy. Jonathan says: “People need to leave wearing the glasses, not with the glasses wearing them. Choosing the perfect frames is very personal and it has to be the right choice for the individual. Spectacles can completely alter a person’s appearance, identity and confidence. Buying glasses should be an experience for anyone and for that reason I make it as relaxed as possible. You cannot push people into buying what isn’t right for them. When they put on a pair of glasses and smile – that’s when you

know you’ve found the perfect pair – it’s so rewarding.” The shop itself is something to behold. Dating back to 1845, it was originally a pharmacy. Looking around these wonderful Victorian premises it is not hard to tell. Many of the old fixtures and fittings are still in place, something as Jonathan wanted to keep the heritage of the property. Bespoke Eyewear can change lenses on site within the hour, giving you the chance to browse the local shops and cafes before returning to pick up your brand new spectacles. So what are you waiting for? If you want exclusive brands and a great look tailored to your needs, pop into Bespoke Eyewear today. NS Valentines

To Have and Have Not (1944) Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall "We'll have a lot of fun together." So Humphrey Bogart told his 19-year-old co-star before shooting this masterful war drama. The star had never dated a leading lady and the young actress had never been in a film before, but their relationship became one of Hollywood's most famous love affairs. Despite a 25-year age gap and Bogart already being married, the couple wed in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957.

Reel love

Who said romance was dead? Here are seven of the best Hollywood relationships ever forged on-screen.

I

t has been said that ‘life imitates art’ and never is this more true than on the silver screen. Hollywood doesn't get any more romantic or voyeuristic than those movies that sparked passionate, off-camera love affairs. From epic war films to comic book heroes, this crop of films saw sparks flying more furiously off-screen than on. And while most celebrity rendezvous last about as long as the film première after-party, these Hollywood couples have proven to have staying power both personally and professionally in the fickle world of showbusiness. So whether you’re cosying up on the sofa or cracking open a bottle of vino for one this Valentine’s Day, be inspired by these reel love stories.

Words: Hannah Pearson

Swing Shift (1984) Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1968, but only began a relationship after they co-starred in Swing Shift. The couple have been together since 1983 – although they haven’t tied the knot – and have raised four children together.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996) Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith met in 1994 on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air when Jada auditioned to play Will's girlfriend on the show. She may have missed out on the part but the couple married in 1997 and have two children together, Jaden and Willow, who are fast becoming famous in their own right.

Daredevil (2003) Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Bennifer 2.0 met on the set of Pearl Harbor in 2001 but didn't start dating until 2004, after playing comic book hero and heroine Daredevil and Elektra. During filming, Affleck rescued his co-star from a stunt gone wrong and Garner found her very own superhero. They married a year later and now have three children.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie One of the more controversial on-set meetings, Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston when he met Angelina on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The fictional couple who are hired to kill one another morphed into the ultimate real-life super couple, Brangelina. They married last year and are raising six children together.

Dream House (2011) Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz Possibly one of the most secret celebrity love stories, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were friends for years but started dating in 2010 when they co-starred in Dream House. The psychological thriller may have received poor reviews and low box office results but the couple went on to marry, with just four guests attending the private ceremony and the rest of the world oblivious to their romance.

The Place Beyond The Pines (2012) Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes Hollywood’s golden couple started dating in 2011 when they co-starred in American crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines. Frequently voted as one of the most beautiful and successful A-list couples, Ryan and Eva welcomed a baby girl last year.

The Gress is greener

When the snow melts and the skiers leave, the Italian Alps come alive with a different kind of tourist. Chris Wilson dons his walking boots and hits the mountain trails.

A

swirl of mist magically cleared, a sliver of sunlight bounced off the snow-capped mountains and the race was on to shed layers: off with the waterproofs, on with the suncream. Welcome to mid-summer in Gressoney, the renowned mountain resort at the foot of Monte Rosa in the Italian Alps. This is the land of the Walser people, who emigrated from Germany in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, the paths they carved out across the Alps are known as the Walser Trail and for walkers they offer awesome views of the Monte Rosa range of peaks. The weather in these parts during the summer months can be pretty varied, but the clouds don’t stay around for too long and when they roll away, glorious sunshine makes the scenery even more dazzling and our happy band were able to keep those cagoules in the rucksacks (well, most of the time). With ski lifts dotted at regular intervals across the mountain ranges as far as the eye can see, Gressoney is one of Europe’s bestloved resorts for all winter sports. But the ski lifts don’t grind to a halt when the season ends. As the snow melts on the slopes, lush

green meadows dotted with dazzling Alpine flowers hove into view, and the hotels and restaurants are filled with a different kind of tourist – walkers. Many of them are from Britain and seeking fresh challenges after the Derbyshire and Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. There are several walks in the mountains around Gressoney to satisfy weekend walkers and hard-core hikers alike, with paths clearly marked across the constantly undulating valleys. Walking amid these mountains allows the visitor to explore the natural landscape, using the ski lifts to reach high ground before breaking sweat. Even if, like me, you don’t feel inclined to challenge your nerves on the more precarious edges, there are some awesome trails to follow that really make you believe you have left modern life far behind and entered the beautiful, remote world of the Alps. A reasonable fitness level is required, and you may feel more comfortable walking with a guide who knows the terrain, but you don’t need the specialist gear or mountaineering skills required when scaling the highest peaks to experience the thrill of walking in the Italian Alps. Perhaps the best way to experience that wonderful solitude is to strike out for one of

six mountain refuges in the region which are linked to create a modern day grand tour. You can set out for a day’s walking or longer, leaving civilisation far behind but also knowing that at the end of the day you will be well looked-after with staff providing hearty meals, hot showers, dormitories with bunk beds and, especially welcome and much deserved after a day of spectacular but energy-sapping walking, local wine and beer. You need to pack a rucksack with a few essentials, but the provision of those luxuries means you won’t be weighed down too much. The refuges even provide slippers – a lovely touch when you’ve been stomping around in heavy-duty walking boots all day. As for those bunk beds, after a day in that crisp, fresh mountain air you’ll sleep more soundly and awake more refreshed than you would in the plushest five-star hotel. Our happy band of hikers spent a memorable evening at the Alpenzu Grande refuge. What a welcome sight it was, after several hours striding out in the company of our expert local guide Carlo, to emerge from a forest, turn a corner and see this traditional high-gabled timber and slate building suspended 1,779 meters above sea level on a rocky balcony. After a hearty pasta meal and a few glasses of beer, there was time to reflect on a full day that began with breakfast in our hotel, Chalet Hotel Valverde in the pretty village of Gressoney St Trinite. I just had to step out onto my balcony in the morning to see the

In terms of convenience, the location is hard to improve on. The hotel is joined to Gatwick’s North Terminal by a 50-yard walkway, and even if your flight is from the South Terminal, it’s still a great location: the shuttle train between the terminals is a short walk away. www.hilton.com

dazzling views that we would become used to but never quite take for granted over the next few days. The hotel provides packed lunches for guests who are keen to get out and explore for the day, and we started our trek with a short coach journey to the twin village of Gressoney St Jean, from where a decidedly basic chairlift (the scariest part of the trek for a non-skier like me) took us up to around 1,500 metres. There are several peaks of around 4,000 metres-plus surrounding Gressoney, providing an ever-changing vista, and a spectacular showcase for summer in the Alps at their

prettiest. The clouds rolled away, the sun was beating down, it was time to break out the shorts and sun cream as we made our way back down to Gressoney. While the lodges provide vital sustenance for walkers, Gressoney, which is around two hours by road from Milan airport, offers those little luxuries, such as fabulous food and wine tastings hosted at Castore by restaurant owner, somellier, mountain bike guide and all-round renaissance man Paola. Local wines are not produced in enough quantity to be readily available in Britain but there are some lovely easy-drinking reds well worth sampling and bringing home. Local cheeses, salami and smoked ham are pretty special too. But it’s the memories of walking in those mountains that stays with you. If you only considered such places as winter ski resorts, you don’t know the half of it.

While guest rooms reflect a harmonious combination of different tones of beige and blue symbolising sand and sea, the decorative accents and wood details evoke the emblematic colours and architectural characteristics of Old San Juan. Irwin Mitchell Wills, Trust & Estate Disputes Families fall out at the best of times and the consequences can be devastating. This can be exacerbated following a death. The controversial provisions of a will can quickly lead to a total and utter breakdown in the relationship amongst family members. People’s emotions can overwhelm them. It can become an exceptionally emotive dispute and as such people can often be ruled by their heart rather than their head. It can create a situation where the family is quickly ripped apart. Claims are on the rise. Recent reports indicate that claims have increased by 30%. This is, in my view, the tip of the iceberg. One in five people have been involved in a Will dispute in the UK and this is likely to increase. Irwin Mitchell gets 70 new enquiries a month on average and this figure is growing. It is a significantly higher figure than it was even three years ago. It is difficult to avoid these disputes where there are disappointed beneficiaries and their very nature means that they are not easy to resolve. It is vitally important to take advice from experts. This is a very specialised area of litigation and has its own unique rules and procedures. If it is approached like a commercial dispute, this can create additional problems. Those of us who are experienced in this area of law, generally adopt a pragmatic and reasonable stance, always looking to explore the possibility of settlement, given the very high costs involved in litigating the matter. The first letter can set the tone for the way in which the dispute develops and ultimately the manner in which it is resolved.

In my view the best advice is simply to talk. People are naturally reluctant to discuss their Wills and what will happen in the event of their death. There are situations where there is no perfect solution. By way of example, a person may have two children, one of whom has worked in the family company for 20 years helping to make it the success that it is. The company may constitute 90% of the estate. Does the Testator leave his/her shareholding to the child that has been in the business or look to split the estate equally? There is no right or wrong answer. However, if everything is discussed openly and the reasons for the decision conveyed, it cannot often prevent a dispute arising after death. It is frequently the “shock” of the contents of the Will, at a time when family members may be suffering from significant feelings of loss and upset at the death of a loved one, that fuels the dispute. I am increasingly involved in assessing the risks of a dispute and devising strategies to minimise those risks. I discuss these issues with the person making the Will, in conjunction with the tax advisors, so that an informed decision can be made as to how to structure their estate. Indeed, I have found myself mediating with the family members to reach a solution that everyone can live with. This has so far avoided any disputes arising after death, and indeed, helped the airing of long-held grievances which has generally improved the relationships amongst the family.

riends, supporters and suppliers, along with MPs, dignitaries and members of the press were treated to a regal champagne reception at the launch of the new fine dining restaurant at Goldsborough Hall, Knaresborough – once the royal residence of the Queen’s aunt Princess Mary. Invited guests got a glimpse into the fabulous dining experience at the 17th century stately home, which will offer diners

a gold-standard, locally-sourced, three-course a la carte menu and a sumptuous sevencourse tasting menu in its exclusive dining room, that once only catered for weddings and private functions. Chef Paul Richardson-Mackie, formerly of Rudding Park, offered a taste of things to come at the luxury venue, on 22 January, with sweet and savoury canapés in the new dining room – a stately setting unlike anything in the local area.

“It was a wonderful occasion to mark the start of a new chapter at Goldsborough Hall, which has also been our home for the last ten years,” said owner Clare Oglesby. “There’s been many changes to the hall in the last 12 months and this is the icing on the cake, with a new chef and new general manager bringing the final touches to what we hope will be one of the best restaurant in the area.” For more, visit www.goldsboroughhall.com

NS Eating Out

Friends with benefits The warm welcome and joyous atmosphere at Amici is the perfect antidote to cold winter temperatures, writes Chris Wilson.

I

’m not sure whether it was somebody’s birthday that prompted our man in chef’s whites to burst into song, serenading the restaurant with a powerful melodic tenor voice. Perhaps he was just in a happy mood… there was certainly an atmosphere that made everyone in the room feel they were part of a joyous celebration. Perhaps that is the key to the success that has meant a consistently busy restaurant and satisfied customers since Amici – it means friends, appropriately enough – first opened in October 2013. This Italian restaurant in Alwoodley has enough architectural flourishes to give it the instant wow factor – there is a big open kitchen that provides instant theatre, and the marble table tops and smoked glass leave you in no doubt that this is a diner with a decidedly contemporary look. But even more impressive for me was the warmth of the welcome from co-owner Ruggero Donno and the team. On a bitterly cold January evening we were instantly reassured that it had most definitely been worth our while venturing out. There is a wide-ranging menu of pasta, seafood, meat and chicken dishes as well as the daily specials, all worthy of serious consideration. We nibbled a tasty thin pizza

NS • page 56

base with tomato and garlic topping while we made our choices. For starters the specials menu provided me with a generous bowl of plump, juicy mussels, sautéed in tomato sauce with chili and garlic, which got my evening off to a delicious, robust start. Those big flavours were perfect for extinguishing the last traces of the winter chill. My companion selected from the specials menu a dish that looked like a celebration on a plate – seared king scallops and prawns served with guacamole and amaretto crumble. With a sprinkling of edible flowers to make the presentation truly spectacular, it looked pretty enough to be hung on the wall of an art gallery – but too good to resist. The scallops in particular, lightly seared on the outside and perfectly moist and tender, really hit the spot. I stayed with seafood for my main course and was rewarded with a beautifully cooked chunk of halibut, served with tiger prawns and Vernaccia wine sauce, served with rucola salad. The fish was meaty, moist and very satisfying. Across the table new ground was being broken as a chicken breast had been cooked in an unusual sauce of green and black pepper with a hint of lime. The sauce was creamy but the lime cut through the richness, making for a welcome and refreshing change. There is a great wine list with some Italian classics and I was grateful to Ruggero for recommending a fantastic floral, fruity and slightly sharp bottle of Gavi which proved to be a perfect match for both our food selections.

Amici is a great place for relaxing, indulging in a bit of people-watching and seeing some expert chefs in action – thanks to that open kitchen – so a breather was welcome before we tackled dessert. Crème brulee was sweet and smooth with a perfect crispy caramelised topping while a spectacular Cassata Sicilian Al Pistacchio, containing candied fruit, nuts and ice-cream, ensured that for me the evening finished with a flourish.

ith pubs closing at the rate of 30 a week across the country, you’d hardly describe being a landlord as an easy option these days. But there are some success stories to lighten the statistical gloom. Chris Wraith certainly seems to know what it takes to keep a local pub busy, having racked up 31 successful years at the helm of The Chequers Inn at Ledsham. The pub sits at the centre of an old rural farming village. Surrounded by picturesque landscape and lined with rows of cottages, the serene setting makes it difficult to comprehend The Chequers’ close proximity to the A1 – just a few right turns and a squeeze under a bridge, to be precise. If you’re a newcomer to The Chequers Inn, you might think sunny summer days are the best time to visit. A grand beer garden is the first thing you see, and it is pretty impressive. However, while people may flock in their droves to the wooden benches in the summer months, the true showstopper here is the food. For the last 12 years, head chef David Siddall has been impressing customers with his culinary flair. The menu features an impressive selection of meat and fish dishes, some traditional pub favourites, tempting vegetarian options and some lighter sandwich options. We arrived early on a Saturday evening and escaped from the bitter wind, ducking under the low wooden beams and into the upstairs restaurant, where we thawed out near a roaring coal fire. The cold evening had given us a hankering for some truly indulgent cuisine, and so I began with a wild mushroom and goat’s cheese bruschetta, which proved to be a heavenly

combination of rich flavours, freshened by hint of pesto – a fantastic start to our feast. My partner opted for the silky smooth duck liver pate, which came with a sweet beetroot chutney, pepper drops for decoration and an impressive hunk of toasted bread. For many years, Chris has sourced his meat from the same trusted butcher in the next village. To put this to the test, I ordered the noisettes of lamb and my partner had strips of fillet steak with brandy, peppers, mushrooms and cream. Both were impeccably presented; topped with orange peel shaped into a flower head and sprigs of herbs – we knew we were in fora treat even before the first morsel. Each dish was incredibly moreish, and as we approached the last forkful, every piece of tender meat, drop of jus and sauce was savoured carefully. For dessert, my Eton mess was packed with strawberries, raspberries and passion fruit, mixed generously with meringue and cream, a light choice that left me both satisfied and refreshed. Across the table my companion was tackling a rich and indulgent Baileys and Maltesers cheesecake. Luckily, I was on hand to help out with this velvety treat. The Chequers Inn is host to a great atmosphere, delicious food and an impressive selection of Yorkshire beers. If you’re looking for a reason to stay in with a bottle of wine and your feet up, sorry, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Stunning Displays of Fires & Fireplaces

Clutter free

Enhance your lifestyle with these top tips from Sally Rasmussen, director of Rasmus.

I Ignite your imagination

t’s all very well extolling the virtues of a clutter-free life. Many of us might agree that we could live with a bit less stuff however, the question remains, where to put it all? After all, who wants to live without their snorkel, mask and flippers (x4 and essential for seaside holidays) or the fondue set bought on a romantic trip way back when (but only used once in ten years). OK, my secrets are out. I could wax lyrical about how a clutter-free life is less stressful as I have read many articles on the subject and I mean many. However, the fact remains that I’m a busy mum of two busy girls, married to a busy chap, running a business and also trying to be a whole lot of other things daughter, sister, friend etc etc. I’m not alone either. So my advice this month is – sort out your storage. It’ll take a bit of effort but you will reap huge rewards in the form of smug satisfaction and most importantly improved relaxation time. Invest in the best storage solutions that you can afford – I use everything from recycled soup tubs to beautiful Scandinavian contrastcolour drawer units to house the plethora of pens, assorted stationery, books, craft items and a hundred other things belonging to the kids. In the kitchen it’s a case of storage within storage – using shelf and drawer dividers and packing lesser used items into plastic boxes with labels. Don’t forget that once stored away you have to be able to find it again… In the bedroom, bespoke built-in wardrobes make sense. They can incorporate hanging space for two people (hang one rail above another), shelves with pull-out drawers if you have no space for chests of drawers, and even a small built-in desk in lieu of a dressing table. Hide everything behind a run of sliding screens or mirrored doors and you will not need to allow space for hinged doors to open. Buy a bed with built-in storage. If your bedroom is short on tabletop space, add a shelf, it can make an inexpensive alternative to a bedside unit. It also gives the illusion of space when the floor area is still visible. And after all – it’s all about the space. Design it, use it, live it.

NS In Brief

The Cones come to life in new books

New look for William & Victoria Harrogate’s renowned restaurant and wine bar, William & Victoria, is closing throughout February for a refurbishment. The work necessary to update the infrastructure of the building (i.e. new wiring, new kitchens, new toilets and updated décor) has been planned since owners David Straker and his wife, Johanna, purchased the premises two years ago. The upstairs restaurant and downstairs wine bar are being brought more in line with each other, whilst being true to the character of the original wine bar in Harrogate. The main emphasis will still be on good quality British classics accompanied by an extensive wine list with an efficient and personal service. The refurbishment is due to complete at the beginning of March. www.williamandvictoria.com

Chris Madeley spent a lot of time on the M1 as she and her husband Keith (Mr Yorkshire) travelled on business. Sitting in road works surrounded by cones, Chris had a wacky idea – what if the cones came alive and had adventures? She has now released the first in her series of children’s colourillustrated books, Meet the Cones, which is available worldwide on Amazon. The story follows four cone friends, who learn to be a force for good through safety issues on road, rail, around water, electricity, wet floors, road building and building sites. They learn about friendship, manners and behaviour and how to have adventures and fun without malice or damage as they strive to be good cones, whose mission in life is to keep children safe.

Garden centres bring growth to Christmas gift show Now in its 66th year at Harrogate International Centre (HIC Yorkshire), Harrogate Christmas & Gift 2015 has repeated the success of last year with show organisers citing a trend amongst garden centres to stock more gift items. Show organiser Simon Anslow said: “A lot of our visitors are from garden centres or visitor attractions whose product ranges are expanding. That means we are attracting a wider range of Christmas and gift retailers and therefore bringing in a new range of gift buyers.” The show was the first major event of 2015 for HIC and its success keeps the pace up following a strong finish to 2014 enjoyed by the North Yorkshire event venue. Highlights of this year’s four-day show included a presentation to Malcolm Naish of Lema Publishing, who celebrated 50 years of continuous attendance. Malcolm was presented with an engraved crystal decanter and a bottle of vintage port at the Greatest Christmas Awards, held at the neighbouring Majestic Hotel in Harrogate.

As managing director my duties include meetings, event planning, buying and distribution of products, and rotating my time between branches. Our immediate plans after recently launching two new North Leeds Bliss branches are to totally refurbish Bliss Spa on Otley Road and Bliss at Butcher Hill. My long term plans include creating beauty and industry careers for individuals who strive to be at the top of their field. Advice I would give to any would-be woman in business is to move steadily with a three-to-five-year plan. Always create a little relaxation time for yourself and if you enjoy your work, rest assured you will never work another day in your life.

Claire Douglas Argent Contemporary Jewellery Argent is an independent, contemporary jewellery shop. We source and showcase up-and-coming UK designers, as well as stocking brands such as Trollbeads, Nomination and Chlobo. I love the way each day is different and I enjoy building relationships with customers – many of whom have become true friends. To be successful it’s important to love what you’re doing, to believe in yourself and be passionate about your business. feel good background knowledge of jewellery making and design has been paramount for sales; I much prefer this approach to pressure selling.

Sally Rasmussen Rasmus

Sally Trousdale Pick and Mix Marketing Solutions Pick and Mix Marketing Solutions is a marketing agency specialising in social media marketing and training. I run social media campaigns, which involves updating profiles, writing copy and working towards that light bulb moment idea! I will be starting a Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) level-six marketing qualification that will qualify me as a chartered marketer and the team will be developing its Google knowledge too. I would advise others to put time into networking and meeting likeminded people, and plan ahead. And last but not least, have fun! I love what I do and try to bring that enthusiasm to each and every project.

Judy Robson Montpellier Beauty Therapy I am a registered general nurse, beautician, holistic therapist and skin care consultant and specialise in antiageing treatments using state-of- theart technology, exclusive to Harrogate. I also advise on skincare and prescriptive products for mature skin. By constantly researching and investigating new treatments and products, I can ensure our clients continually benefit from our advice and care. My advice for any woman thinking of starting a business would be to fully research their market, get to know your business neighbours and establish links with business networking groups.

Rasmus is about beautiful, contemporary Scandinavian inspired furniture, lighting and interior design. I am involved in all areas of the business and am incredibly lucky to have a fantastic team around me. In February we open our beautiful new showroom on Commercial Street in Harrogate, which will present even more of our exciting and unique designs. We also plan to offer networking opportunities to our customers as well as local business ladies. It’s important to learn to delegate if it doesn’t come naturally. Loyalty (both ways) is worth gold and make sure you do something you love – life’s a journey not a destination.

Maria Jacobs Manor Health, Weight Loss & Skin Clinic Manor Health is a weight loss and skin clinic. We use medically graded equipment, which delivers exceptional results, and we also specialise in weight loss, advanced skin treatments, anti-wrinkle and body treatments. We constantly look to expand the range of treatments we offer, but at the moment I am waiting for something special to catch my eye. My advice is when times get difficult, stay positive, remember what you have already achieved and work harder. It’s essential to surround yourself with positive people who have a can-do attitude.

Dr Tracy Johnson Gateways School Although I am running a business, I’m in the people business and so I build relationships with parents, pupils and staff in order to provide a first class, tailored, educational experience for every pupil, whatever their needs. My aim is to see Gateways ranked as the number one school, by parents and pupils alike, for the quality of our education in the West and North Yorkshire regions. My ambition is to be remembered for making a difference. To be successful in business I think it’s essential to believe in yourself and trust your instincts. They won’t often let you down.

Anna Reed Little Star Co.

Ban Kaewkraikhot Sukhothai Restaurants

I am a one woman band at Little Star Co., a baby boutique in Harrogate, which sells a beautiful range of prams, car seats, toys, gifts, and baby essentials. As well as updating the website and promoting the store using social media and everything else, I look after customers – all with the help of my little assistant; my 18month old, George. My dream is to develop my own range of baby products. I have lots of ideas that I am hoping to bring to life in the not-too-distant future. Remember – a little bit of girl power goes a long way!

Sukhothai is a Yorkshire-based group of family run restaurants. Although I am the owner I can’t help being hands on and am happiest working in the kitchen, cooking authentic Thai food. Things very rarely stand still in the restaurant business and it’s vital to keep your existing restaurants at the top of their game, while also trying to grow the business. For other women going into business I would say never, ever give up on your dreams. They are what drive you and whatever obstacles present themselves, you can overcome them if you really believe in what you are doing. Â

NS Women in Business

Lisa Batty Verbena Spa at the Feversham Arms Hotel I returned to the Feversham Arms Hotel after a short stint as revenue manager at another hotel. I feel like I have come home, and the passion that I have for the Verbena Spa has shown in a fantastic year of growth in 2014. I think it’s important to work hard, and have a passion for what you are doing. When dealing with a team of people who are integral to your business I prefer to be a leader than a manager, but that’s hard to pull off if you don’t love what you do.You have to lead by example, and that’s much easier if you genuinely enjoy what you do.

Helen Bowman Bowman Antiques Fairs Limited We organise antiques, art and vintage fairs; two at Harrogate and six at Stafford each year. I am involved in all the hundreds of tasks within a small business. My aim is to increase the number of people visiting and buying from antiques and vintage fairs; it is after all, one of the greenest options for purchasers of furniture, accessories and art. To succeed in a business I think it’s crucial to be fair, listen, make mistakes, be creative and stay relaxed. But essentially, surround yourself with good people, reward and take care of them and commit to your business.

Lynsey Milner Chaophraya Thai Restaurant Leeds We are a Thai fine dining restaurant in Leeds city centre and I look after the events and marketing for Leeds, Birmingham and Meadowhall. I liaise with our large corporate clients arranging dinners and activities, such as cooking schools or cocktail masterclasses. We are expanding rapidly over the next few years as a company, so I would like to be involved in the new openings and the marketing for these restaurants. My ambition is to become head of marketing and events. When it comes to business I think it’s essential to stay true and believe in yourself.

Val Jackson Garden Room Flowers I sell flowers and gifts for happy days, sad days and just-to-cheer-you-up days, covering weddings, funerals, special occasions and corporate work. Every day is different. Some days I travel to the flower markets to select and purchase any other additional stock. I aim to continue maintaining a successful business in which local customers return and new customers find and to ensure all future brides are given the support and help needed for their special day. For those going into business I would say: enjoy, try and keep time for family and friends, and relax.

Gaynor Wilson The Cairn Hotel As general manager of the hotel I run 135 bedrooms, six function rooms and 75 members of staff. Becoming general manager in May 2013 was a huge career achievement because out of the 31 hotels in Harrogate, I am the only female general manager of the larger hotels. Since I accomplished that, I have strived to make us the most friendly and value for money hotel in the area. For the future we aim to host as many functions and wedding each year as possible. My advice to other women going into business would be: don’t give up and don’t be a pushover.

Maria Robinson Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital I am a senior registered nurse and am responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality, safe, efficient and effective care. Nuffield Health is a registered charity and patients are genuinely at the heart of what we do. We have a commitment to never compromise clinical care for commercial gain. I think finding or building an organisation which aligns with your personal value set is important and enables you to be who you really are. The most effective person is the real person, so working in an environment where there is true congruence enhances your chance of success.

Catriona Dowse Bridal Rogue Gallery We are a small chain of three bridal shops, with one each in London,York and Harrogate. Each boutique sells designer wedding gowns and accessories and we also produce our own couture collection of handmade gowns under my name, Catriona Dowse. My day is pretty varied. As well as doing the designing I also do a great deal of the pattern cutting, sourcing of fabrics and purchasing new stock. Being your own boss is a fabulous thing but it’s not for everybody; being able to juggle life on several levels can be difficult. I have to be extremely organised and plan ahead, I note everything down so nothing is ever forgotten.

Education provision at Richmond House School has been extended even further. ndependent Leeds preparatory school Richmond House School has taken steps to maximise the use of its ten acres of outdoor space by erecting a Yurt in the school grounds. Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.
