WHAT’S ON

20 things to look forward to in 2017 WITH OUR ECLECTIC ROUND UP SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING EVENTS HAPPENING IN LEEDS AND BEYOND THIS YEAR, YOU’LL BE BUSY RIGHT UP UNTIL CHRISTMAS. BY HANNAH SANDERS.

1

OnRoundHay Music Festival

Harvey Goldsmith has managed, promoted and produced some of the world’s biggest live shows for 50 years and last year he started OnRoundHay in Leeds. Big names included Primal Scream, Wolf Alice and James, along with a whole host of local and national artists. “We were aiming for a young, hip, family audience that just wants to have a great time. It’s a triple focus: great food along with an exciting experience for kids as they are the next generation of festival goers,” he said. This certainly was achieved last year and now the festival is preparing to build on a hugely impressive debt, entering into its second year. Although the date and lineup is yet to be announced, we’re sure to be in for another successful festival.

2 Leeds Art Gallery One of the most recognisable buildings in the city is due to re-open this October. The gallery closed in January last year to undergo some essential repairs to the roof of the historic Victorian building. The museum displays work from awardwinning artists, as well as understated masterpieces from emerging talents. It is home to vast collections of paintings and sculptures along with work by locals Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, it really is the go-to place for a little stimulation in the north. Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 3AA www.leedsartgallery.co.uk

GUNG HO! Gung Ho! is the world’s biggest inflatable obstacle course and it’s coming to Leeds on 20 May. The event will see 5,000 runners not only fly down a five storey-high, 200-foot-long water slide, but tackle another nine obstacles as well. The only thing better than clambering around the obstacle course is knowing that you are doing it for a good cause. This year you, friends and family, can help raise money for Children in Need. The event is at Temple Newsam and tickets are £31 until 27 February when prices start increasing. Temple Newsam Road, Leeds LS15 0AE // www.begung-ho.co.uk

The annual four-day festival celebration is in its sixth year now, and promotes craft beer brewed in the UK and overseas. The Town Hall is taken over by breweries from Kirkstall to Tuatara in New Zealand… and all points in between. But, the festival isn’t just about beer, they also have a range of street food and live entertainment on one of their two live stages, and you even get to enjoy your beer in some unique spaces including the cells below ground level. The festival takes place 7-10 September. www.leedsbeer.com

5 Great Yorkshire Show Featuring the best of British farming, the Great Yorkshire Show is England’s premier agricultural show. Held at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate it gives its visitors a first-hand experience of agriculture and rural life by exhibitions and demonstrations. The event is organised by Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS) and this year they’ve organised main ring displays from Atkinsons Action Horses – the team behind the successful TV series Poldark and Victoria. But agriculture remains the heart of the show with Lely robotic milking demonstration and of course grand cattle parade. The event runs from 11-13 July and tickets are available from 1 March.

Tour de Yorkshire

Praise be! A new club has opened on Woodhouse Lane in Leeds, aptly named after the church in which it operates. The Leeds promotion company Back to Basics are behind the venue’s club and gig nights, while in the day the space will be host to food vendors Get Baked and Zest. That’s not all The Church has to offer though, they also are putting on part or full-time creative and cooking courses for the public in the old vicarage space.

The third edition of the Tour de Yorkshire takes place on 2830 April and is starting in Bridlington and finishing in Sheffield two days later. The idea for the Tour de Yorkshire arose as a legacy event following the significant success of the visit of the 2014 Tour de France to the county. This year the race begins with a 173km stage to Scarborough on Friday 28 April. Stage Two see riders start in Tadcaster and go 122.5km to Harrogate, before ending with a 194.5km stage from Bradford to Fox Valley, Sheffield. The official charity partner of this year’s race is the Alzheimer’s Society.

What started in the 1960s as one man’s remedy for West Indian homesickness, has now become Europe’s longest-running authentic Caribbean carnival parade, featuring costumes, music and a parade. On 29 August, Leeds will be full of colourful costumes and a procession of troupes, all dancing to the infectious Caribbean soca and steel pan music. Organisers are already working with partners to plan for the upcoming celebrations, which include a Carnival Ballet to capture the event’s heritage in a unique way, as well as the annual Carnival King and Queen Costume show.

Wonderful one-offs TIMELESS, UNIQUE AND ELEGANT, A JAMES STEWARD ORIGINAL IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU FEEL SPECIAL – WHATEVER THE OCCASION. o you ever look inside your wardrobe and say to yourself: “I have absolutely nothing to wear?” You’re certainly not alone. The process of selecting and purchasing clothing that screams individuality and style isn’t always easy. Fortunately, if you’re looking for an outfit that stands out from the crowd, Leeds designer James Steward has teamed up with his sister, Hannah Moody, to launch a stunning special occasion ready-to-wear collection. Twice winner of 'Designer of the Year', James Steward has been making a name for himself as a fashion designer for the past 16 years. Making beautiful dresses for women who want a one-off piece that makes them look and feel wonderful. Having moved to Rome in 1998, he received an apprenticeship at Italian fashion house Gattinoni Couture, and since returning to the UK has been working closely with a number of fashion boutiques and high end retail stores as a lead designer. More recently he branched out on his own, specialising in beautiful bespoke gowns for glamorous events including the Soap Awards, BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the BAFTAs. As well as pieces for celebrity style icons including Kylie Minogue, Victoria Beckham, Kadeena Cox and numerous UK soap stars. If you’ve seen former Coronation

Street and Miss Selfridge star Katherine Kelly dressed up for the red carpet, she’s often wearing a dress designed by James. Hannah is creative too, graduating from Cordwainers College with a degree in Footwear Design and Manufacturing and working in the international footwear industry for the past 14 years. More recently she has designed footwear and handbags for some of the most popular UK high street brands. “We’ve always been close and are both at an age where we thought, if we don’t try now we never will,” says Hannah. “Working together in this way might not suit all siblings, but in this case, it is the perfect solution personally, business–wise and creatively.” James Steward designs are both timeless and unique and all outfits are perfect for any occasion - the races, a wedding or simply a night out – with all components and materials sourced and manufactured in the UK and each design created inhouse by James and Hannah. James Steward also offers a full bespoke bridal service, creating beautiful handmade dresses for the bride, bridesmaids and mother of the bride. “We recently made dresses for the whole bridal party: the wedding dress, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, seven bridesmaids and both grandmothers. It was a very busy time, but so lovely to dress all of the ladies in the family for the big day,” says James. If you have an occasion coming up and are thinking of having a bespoke outfit made, contact Hannah on 07468 572378 to arrange an appointment at their Wetherby studio.

Testimonials: "I'm always looking for something different to wear, something stylish and that no one else has. I was excited when I read about James and his sister Hannah and even more excited when I found out their clothing was of a similar price to that paid for mass market designer clothing. I spent an hour at their studio, trying on lots of dresses and finally settled on the Newcastle - it made me feel elegant and slim and every time I have worn I've had fabulous comments. Having seen a sneak peek of their next collection on a mannequin, I am already awaiting the launch and another new dress in my wardrobe." Gail "Having seen first-hand the unique dresses designed and made by James Steward, I visited the shop last month. The service provided was exceptional and even though I went with a view to buying one dress, I ended up getting two. The material used is amazing and the designs are just stunning - every dress I tried on made me feel great." Helen

It’s all about you FROM THE PERSONAL SERVICE TO THE INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATIONS, ME TIME AT HANALEE HAIRDRESSING IS A SPECIAL EXPERIENCE. he winter months are nearly over and, with summer holidays and weddings season on the doorstep, now is the perfect opportunity to indulge in some ‘me time’. Recently relocated to Street Lane, Leeds, hanalee is an indulgent salon that offers a range of hair and beauty treatments carried out with professional precision and tailored to the needs of each client. Salon owner and director Hana Lee has over 25 years’ experience. Originally from Korea, she came to England 20 years ago to continue her studies, following an extensive professional background in image consulting. “After training at Sassoon in London, I decided I wanted to open a salon that combined my two loves: fashion and hair,” she says. “I have always wanted to establish a business that can offer clients the chance to have an image consultation as well as a new haircut, which led to me opening my salon 14 years ago. Due to my previous experience, I have the vision and ability to identify what would suit the women and men that come into the salon. “In essence, we understand the whole look, from fashion trends and colours right down to hair and make-up.” Hana moved to her new location late last year, but is holding an official launch evening on Thursday 9 February, from 5pm to 8pm. This is a perfect opportunity for old friends and new clients to see the salon, which reflects Hana’s longing for a new adventure in venue that will be more

T

accessible for many of her clientele. “We are planning to have a champagne reception along with special offers on treatments, not only available to our regulars, but for new clients as well,” Hana adds. Hana and her team of stylists offer an extensive range of treatments, from Olaplex – known as ‘insurance for your hair’, as it reduces breakage and makes your colour last longer – to the Kevin Murphy ‘treat me’ conditioning treatment, which creates ultimate strength, softness and smoothness. The stylists stay current with trends through specific training, which includes the current and popular hair trend Balayage, which is a painted technique giving hair a sun-kissed, softer look. For those wanting to go one step further, in addition to the range of luxurious hair and beauty treatments, hanalee hairdressing also offers a colour analysis to help you find your personal colouring, as well as styling advice. “Our consultations are detailed and take into consideration the integrity of the hair, skin tone, face type as well as the client’s lifestyle.” hanalee hairdressing is all about going the extra mile for the customer – from a warm welcome and a cup of tea, to a private treatment room – and, with 25 per cent off for all new clients and 20 per cent for students on cuts and colour (Tuesday to Saturday and use promo code NORTHSIDE), you’ll need no excuse to take some time to indulge this New Year.

FEATURE

STAY FIT FOR LIFE EXERCISE IS THE CLOSEST THING WE HAVE TO A YOUTH ELIXIR. BUT SCHEDULES, COMMITMENTS AND AGE CHANGE OUR FITNESS NEEDS OVER TIME. FOLLOW THESE SMART EXERCISE TIPS THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE TO STAY AND FEEL HEALTHIER, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN.

Training in your 20s and 30s These are the years where you can push your body the hardest and demand the most of it, there’s no doubt about it. But don’t mistake youth for invulnerability. The last thing you want to do is leave your younger years hampered by injuries, overtraining and metabolic slowdown. Learn how to train properly: The average 20-something is over-zealous. Take the time to learn proper form and execution and don’t stray far from these boundaries. Yes, this way makes it take longer to progress, but everything you gain will stick. How much weight is on the bar doesn’t matter if you eventually slip a disc, tear a knee tendon, or grind up your shoulders. Form lifelong habits: You have more time for workouts in this phase of your life – you can get plenty of deep, uninterrupted sleep and you only have to think of yourself in your cooking. The truth is, every aspect of getting fit is easier when you’re younger. Take advantage of this and find a routine that enhances strength, endurance and flexibility. Learn how to get and stay lean: It’s advantageous to establish a lean body weight during these years. It will serve you well in your 40s and beyond, when your diet and training are more likely to get shifted down your list of priorities.

Training in your 40s and 50s

FOCUS ON STRENGTH

As you get older, you can still build plenty of muscle and strength. It just means that you may have to make some adjustments to your training protocols and take extra measures to ensure adequate muscle recovery. Take at least one day off each week. Two is better: If you train hard seven days a week, physical fatigue will start accumulating, your sleep will deteriorate and your workouts will suffer. Dial it back and give your body more time to rest, and resist the urge to replace your workout with some other form of intense physical exercise or activity. Break it up. Fitness experts recommend at least 45 minutes of regular exercise, at least three times a week. Remember that you don’t have to do it all at once. Research shows that three 15-minute sessions per day can be as effective as one long workout.

Strength levels naturally start to decline after you turn 30. You can stay strong by adding a strength training component such as weight training to your exercise routine. This can also fend off age-related aches such as lower back pain.

Training in your 60s and beyond What changes as you move into your “golden years”? Not much. You can still be strong and lift heavy weights, you can still rock a lean physique, and your metabolism can still burn hot and keep you feeling young. The only decline you may notice compared to your 40s is in your body’s ability to recovery from your workouts. If you are starting later in your life, don’t despair. By making some simple adjustments and taking simple precautions, you can still do just about everything you could a couple decades ago and reach the same end goals. The bottom line: In an ideal world, you’d use your 20s and 30s to build your ideal physique and then enjoy maintaining it for the rest of your life.

Do you struggle to find the right fitness class? Not sure if you’re a beginner or more advanced trainee? It doesn’t matter what shape you’re in, you can find lots of enjoyable classes designed to be practised by people of all abilities, fitness levels and age groups.

Yoga is suitable for all ages and abilities

Zumba Zumba is a fitness phenomenon, but does it really burn calories and build muscle the way more traditional aerobic training does? A recent study says yes. Zumba not only gets the heart rate into a moderate or higher fitness zone, but also helps participants burn a high number of calories. Beyond that, the program is also made to cater to all ages and different ability levels. From Zumbatomic for children, to Zumba Gold for aging participants, a program can be found for everyone.

Yoga When people hear the word yoga, they immediately associate it with complicated and demanding poses that are either too difficult for young children or too challenging for older individuals. It is important to note that there are a variety of yoga techniques available and different branches of yoga cater to various age groups. Seek the advice of a qualified yoga instructor and they can suggest techniques you can use, depending on your goals and age group

Pilates Pilates is one of the hottest trends in fitness and has something to offer people of all ages and levels of ability - from beginners to elite athletes. With its system of pulleys and springs, handles and straps - providing support for beginners and people with certain medical conditions, as well as resistance for people looking to challenge their body - pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.

Aqua Aerobics Aqua Aerobics is an excellent method of exercise which improves the fitness of your heart and lungs and helps you tone up. Many people prefer to exercise in water as it keeps you cool, is kinder to joints and the water supports some body weight. The shallow water also enables nonswimmers to exercise too.

Tai Chi Tai Chi involves a series of flowing, standing exercises with a small section on meditation to relax the body and mind. It works to balance the body internally and externally to resolve many common issues. It is suitable for all ages and greatly enjoyed by those looking to stay flexible and active.

Swimming

You can take up swimming at any age

If you’re thinking of taking up swimming, you can do so at any age. It’s never too late to learn. It’s a great form of all round exercise and an activity that gives your body an all-over workout, teaches essential life skills and can be embraced as an intense sport or enjoyed simply for fun. Leventhorpe Vineyard, established in 1985 and situated within the boundary of the City of Leeds, produces award-winning still and sparkling wines. VALENTINE’S DAY

The food of love

IF YOU WANT TO IMPRESS YOUR OTHER HALF THIS VALENTINE’S DAY, A HOMECOOKED MEAL COULD WIN YOU SERIOUS BROWNIE POINTS, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. HERE’S HER TOP TIPS FOR A HASSLE-FREE NIGHT. veryone knows that the quickest way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, if you are not going down the restaurant route there’s that worrying question of what to cook your significant other for arguably the most romantic day of the year. Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world on 14 February in memory of St Valentine. Valentine or Valentinus was imprisoned for his religion and during his time in jail he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter when she came to him for lessons. When it was time for his sentence to be carried out he sent her a letter, signing it “from your Valentine”. Now the idea behind Valentine’s Day is to celebrate affection, love and devotion. Over the years certain foods have been labelled as the “food of love”, such as oysters, mussels, figs and, of course, chocolate. If your partner has a sweet tooth then incorporating chocolate into your Valentines meal is the way to go. Chocolate is a food that has always

Oysters are a wellknown aphrodisiac

VALENTINE’S DAY

“The idea of you meeting in the middle while eating a strand of spaghetti and gazing into each other’s eyes makes some people weak at the knees.” been associated with love as it increases the blood flow, elevates mood and acts as an energy booster. Recipes such as a chocolate-rubbed steak with cocoa sweet potato fries (www.tablematters.com) or Nigella’s chocolate chip chilli (www.bakedbree.com) would be a simple yet effective way of showing off your romantic side. However, try to avoid too many stodgy carbs on the plate or you risk falling asleep on the sofa by 9pm! If your partner has less of a sweet tooth then anything with fish or red meat is a good choice. Fish, or more specifically oysters, mussels and lobster are an aphrodisiac. They are high in zinc and have a reputation for delivering the goods when an evening of romance is on the cards. Cioppino with mussels, which is an Italian-American fish stew (www.andrewzimmern.com), is an easy yet mouth-watering main to dish up. Alternatively go with a honey-glazed salmon (www.foodpolka.com). The romantics could go for “lady and tramp” spaghetti and meatballs because what is more romantic than recreating an iconic scene from a Disney movie? The idea of you meeting in the middle while eating a strand of spaghetti and gazing into each other’s eyes makes some people weak at the knees. Jamie Oliver has a “to die for” meatball recipe (www.jamieoliver.com) which is really easy to make but will have amazing results. If you are feeling very daring you could combine the two – sweet and savoury – and cook some chocolate lobster tacos (www.foodnetwork.co.uk ) to really push out all the stops. Of course, you can’t forget the dessert as it is the most important part of the meal and what says “I love you” more than red velvet Oreo brownies (www.countryliving.com)? These delicious treats seem super easy to make and you can even cheat and use a red velvet cake mix to make your life a bit easier. If you want something a bit more traditional then you can’t go wrong with chocolate dipped strawberries – or just chocolate dipped fruit of any kind! Pair the strawberries with some marshmallows on skewers and serve with salted caramel ice cream and you’re onto a winner. To finish off your romantic meal you need a glass of something special. Fizz fans can go for Chapel Down Rose Brut, which you can grab from Sainsbury’s. If you are going down the route of a good old steak for dinner then stick to the red wine such as Pinotage. However, if neither of you are into wine then go for a chocolate beer. A Brooklyn Black Stout or a Chocolate Ale with Raspberry (Boulevard Brewing Company) are

Everyone loves chocolate...

You can’t go too wrong with a steak

decent ones to go for. The Chocolate Ale gives you a big punch of raspberry to start with but gradually mellows the longer you sit with it, definitely one for those of you who have a sweet tooth. Finally for those of you like a bit more excitement then try Hotel Chocolat’s Salted Caramel Vodka for a predinner shot to get the night off to a whopping start. In the past few years, Valentine’s Day food hasn’t changed that much. The main ingredients are the same: fish, meat and

chocolate and even in the 1800s people were advised to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love. As long as you stick to the basics and there’s some good alcohol you really can’t go wrong. So if you want a romance filled evening with your partner then steer towards the chocolate and fish and stay away from anything messy like a burrito – but if you are determined to go for the finger food then please, don’t wear a white shirt, it’s a disaster waiting to happen! FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD JOIN TOM KERRIDGE AT THE BBC GOOD FOOD SHOW – AND SAVE ON TICKETS WITH US! njoy a delicious day out as the BBC Good Food Show returns to the beautiful spa town of Harrogate this May, packed with seasonal inspiration, live cookery demos, and a host of regional and artisan producers. We asked Tom Kerridge for his top kitchen tips and why he loves cooking at the BBC Good Food Shows…

E

What are your ‘can’t live without’ ingredients in the kitchen?

Salt, butter, water, and I’m a big fan of English mustard. What’s the most unusual food you have ever eaten?

I’ve eaten a Chinese century egg, and something called Corn Smut - a fungus that comes from Mexico that is supposed to be a delicacy, but I’m not sure. There was nothing delicate about it! What is your favourite food destination?

I’m a big fan of New York and Singapore, they have both got really vibrant, eclectic and buzzy food scenes. Although if you don’t want to travel too far, the Pinxa bars of San Sebastian are incredible.

What do you love about cooking live on stage at the BBC Good Food Show?

I like the fact that the audience get to see real life mistakes and that even chefs with Michelin stars burn things! What’s the most useful culinary technique or skill in the kitchen?

The understanding of slow cookery for me is a great one because it is relatively easy to do, you’re not worried about whether the meat is served pink. The longer you cook it, the more you gain in flavour. Master that and everyone will be your friend. What kitchen implement could you not live without?

Good, sharp, professional knives are always a must. Or really nice thick bottomed conductive pans are beautiful to cook with.

You can see Tom Kerridge at the BBC Good Food Show at the HIC, Harrogate on Friday 5 May. He’ll be cooking live in the Supertheatre, answering questions on the BBC Good Food Stage and signing his latest cook book. Plus we’re giving you 20 per cent off* tickets – simply quote NS20 when you book, visit bbcgoodfoodshow.com or call the Box Office on 0844 581 1358. EATING OUT

Keep calm and eat well CHRIS WILSON CHILLS OUT AT THE WHITE SWAN – A DINING EXPERIENCE THAT SOOTHES THE SPIRIT. ou can’t beat a proper village pub for a thoroughly relaxing dining experience, and The White Swan in Ampleforth ticks most of the boxes. Hearty home-cooked food, hand-pulled ales, real fires, wooden beams, soft lighting and genuinely friendly service with a smile... all are present and correct. There are other ways to relax, of course, as the steady stream of visitors who go ‘on retreat’ at the famous abbey a few miles away would testify. But for me, the feeling of well-being that comes from being served good food brings its own special rewards. First impressions are impressive, The White Swan is actually considerably larger than you’d expect from outside looking in. The pub is divided into three sections including a locals’ bar, a dining room with crisp white linen and plush furnishings, and a large lounge area where all the diners were congregated when we visited on a busy Wednesday night in mid-January. There is a nicely balanced menu of pub classics and more cheffy fare, and a chalk board of daily specials. The wine list is several cuts above your average pub too, including some excellent selections by the glass. Our meal began with a wooden board containing warmed mini loaves, white and brown, with salted butter, olives and oil for dipping.

Y

The bread was a perfect accompaniment for my starter from the specials board, cream of white onion and Wensleydale soup served with a sprinkling of vegetable crisps (£5.50). The cheese provided welcome sharpness to a very rich bowl of happiness. Comfort food was also the order of the day across the table, where my companion enjoyed an oven-baked field mushroom with goats’ cheese and herb crumb, served with red onion marmalade (£7.25). We also took the opportunity to sample two of the house whites; both Pinot Grigio (£4.35) and Gavi (£5.35) hit the spot. Whenever I eat out certain dishes are irresistible and one of those is calves’ liver, mainly because I’ve never had the nerve to cook it myself. It’s all about timing – if those tender slices of bitter-sweet loveliness stay on the heat for a minute too long they become tough and tasteless. Luckily, chef was on his toes as the White Swan version was beautifully seared, slightly pink in the middle and an easy chew. Served with mustard seed mash and caramelised onion gravy (£12.95) and a large glass of satisfyingly robust Malbec (£7.30), this was modern pub food at its best. There was equal enthusiasm for pan-fried medallions of pork fillet served on apple and fresh sage risotto, served with a smoked bacon and baby onion sauce (£15.95). We were both very happy with our main

courses but shared a pang of food envy when a spectacular plate of battered, line-caught haddock, chips and mushy peas arrived at the next table. Could one person really demolish such a huge plateful? Observing discreetly from a distance, I can confirm it was never in doubt. This is definitely a venue for healthy appetites. Speaking of which, desserts of sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce (£5.50) and Swan mess with fruits of the forest (£5.50) brought our meal to a satisfying sweet end. We left in very good humour with a sense of calm and contentment. Isn’t that what a spiritual retreat is all about? Humpback whales at Hervery Bay

A whale of a time ADAM KAY HEADS DOWN UNDER IN SEARCH OF QUEENSLAND’S MOST AMAZING SIGHTS – AND SOME OF ITS BIGGEST VISITORS… t’s the source of countless jokes and internet memes. ‘Australia: where everything wants to kill you.’ The apparent deadliness of the land down under has become such a cliché that we’re more likely to shrug it off than pay it proper attention. So it felt as if the universe was trying to prove a point when, on my first full day in the country, I was stung by a poisonous jellyfish. I’m fine, obviously – this article hasn’t been dictated via ouija board from beyond the grave – although I do feel a bit daft for not taking those ‘jokes’ more seriously. At the moment I was stung by that jellyfish, however, I was snorkelling off the coast of a private island on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Golden sunlight poured down on me from above, falling to the ocean floor in bright straight beams, illuminating a kaleidoscope of coral and ocean wildlife. On

balance, I think it was worth the risk. Australia is a land of diverse charm and beauty – and nowhere is this more evident than in Queensland, the country’s secondlargest state. Our trip took in bustling Brisbane, the state capital; the Capricorn Coast, named after the Tropic of Capricorn and with the climate to match; the Bundaberg region with its quaint coastal resorts; and the natural wonders of the Fraser Coast. Each was full of highlights, varied and plentiful – but some things were common to them all. Firstly: good ol’ Aussie hospitality. Wherever we went, we were greeted by beaming smiles and laidback attitudes. (The clichés are true; Aussies really do say “No worries” a lot.) This was the case in busy cities as well as quiet seaside towns: throughout Brisbane, from the Gallery of Modern Art to the South Bank Parklands (both highly recommended), we met strangers who made us feel like old friends.

Second: the weather. Queensland does experience occasional heavy rainfall (more about that later), but for the most part it’s blue skies and high temperatures all year round. In Yeppoon, the sunrises and sunsets made the endless beach glow purple and pink. Our coach driver, a local, told us he’d never seen snow. Reader, I envied him. Thirdly, the food. Aussies love their tucker. Queensland is big on local produce: macadamia nuts, native to the region, feature on every menu; in the town of Bundaberg, famed for its sugar mills and rum distillery, the air smells of thick molasses. The local delicacy of the Brisbane region is the Moreton Bay bug, a type of lobster. The delicate flavour of its sweet, white flesh is in no way diminished by the fact that it looks like the thing that burst out of John Hurt’s chest in Alien. That bug is ugly, yes, but at least it isn’t

TRAVEL

dangerous. It might not be true that everything in Australia wants to kill you, but most things certainly could. Even the fluffiest creatures can be a threat: on one coach journey, we passed a family of kangaroos sunbathing by the roadside – a common sight, our driver said. Very cute – but one swift kick from their hind legs and you’d be pushing up the daisies faster than you could say “Strewth!” The deadliest of all Queensland’s inhabitants, at least in theory, is the humpback whale. Up to 52ft in length with an average weight of 36,000kg, these marine mammals could squish a human without even realising it. But humpbacks are gentle giants, prone to playful displays and hugely popular with tourists. Hervey Bay touts itself as ‘the whalewatching capital of the world’ – unique amongst similar sites around the globe because whales use it as a stopping-off point, rather than somewhere they simply pass through. Expert locals operate boat trips which take visitors right alongside the whales as they play, slapping their enormous fins and leaping dramatically from the waves. There’s currently an application in progress for Hervey Bay to become an internationallyrecognised ‘Whale Heritage Site’. Here’s hoping it gets approved, because this is a

orange-and-white clownfish, and followed a ray as it glided effortlessly along the seabed. A green sea turtle passed right in front of me, close enough to touch, on its way to the surface for air. I was in undersea heaven. Unspoiled beauty abounds in Queensland. On Fraser Island, a short ferry ride out from Hervey Bay and the largest sand island in the world, the sheer number of natural wonders is overwhelming. Our drive (a guided tour by four-wheel drive; ‘normal’ cars aren’t permitted) took in Lake McKenzie, with its white silica beach; Eli Creek, warm and shallow enough to wade along; 75-Mile Beach (bet you can’t guess why it’s called that); and the coloured cliffs at the Pinnacles. Central Station, a forest filled with lush ferns and trees that stretch to the sky, is positively Jurassic. If a T-Rex had wandered into view, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. And what of the place I was describing earlier, where I got stung by the poisonous jellyfish? That’s Pumpkin Island, off the coast of Keppel Bay, and though I’d hesitate to call anywhere ‘paradise’, this comes mighty close. Owner Wayne Rumble was gifted the island by his father for his 27th birthday. (I got some boxer shorts for mine, so it’s one-nil to Wayne on that.) He and his wife Laureth live there, on this tranquil dot in the South Pacific, and the public can share a taste of

spectacle which deserves to be protected and promoted. Also worth protecting: the Great Barrier Reef. We’ve all seen the David Attenborough programmes: it’s stunning, even on screen. But spend an afternoon snorkelling beside it, over it, through it, and you realise why it really is one of nature’s true miracles. The waters around Lady Musgrave Island are a particularly beautiful part of the reef. The route out to the island is notoriously choppy, and our boat ride came the day after the area’s worst storm in years. Put it this way: next time I’ll take a helicopter. But the remarkable sights made every wretch and heave worthwhile. I saw coral of every type and hue. I watched shoals of

their charmed life through the island’s seven holiday cottages. We spent a lazy afternoon sunbathing and paddle-boarding (I only fell in once), watched the sun go down over cocktails at the beach bar, then cooked a barbecue late into the night. The next morning, after a walk round the island (we dawdled and took an hour; you could easily do it in ten minutes), Laureth gave us an impromptu yoga lesson, peaceful and silent but for the waves lapping gently at the shoreline. Suffice to say, I would let a thousand jellyfish sting me for a thousand days to spend one more hour on Pumpkin Island. And the same applies for Queensland – the glistening jewel in Australia’s crown.

Alistair and Jonny Brownlee officially opened the Sports Village

All systems go THE BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S IS TO ATTEND ONE OF ITS OPEN DAYS. ou wouldn’t buy a car without going for a test drive or even consider putting an offer in for a house before having two viewings, so spending some time at a potential school for your child is absolutely crucial to get the feel that it is the right place. Time is tight in modern living and any good independent school will work hard to accommodate a family’s request to have a look at what goes on, in and out of the classroom, at a suitable time. But if getting there during the working week simply isn’t possible, then there is always the opportunity to visit during an open day on a weekend. Open days are a great chance to see the school when all systems are go. It is a way to see all the departments and facilities and to talk to students and staff to find out exactly what life is like on campus. Queen Ethelburga’s is an independent, day and boarding school at Thorpe Underwood near York. It is set in a 220-acre estate and surrounded by simply beautiful North Yorkshire countryside. But what makes Queen Ethelburga’s truly unique is the scale of everything. Its facilities really do have to be seen to be believed and without a doubt there is something to encourage, educate and entertain every single child coming through the gates. Olympic champions Alistair and Jonny Brownlee recently visited to officially open the Sports Village at Queen Ethelburga’s. The

Y

Sports Village is a £30million complex and Alistair and Jonny Brownlee cut the ribbon on 34 acres of sports pitches which have been fully reconstructed. It comprises six astroturf pitches in total, eight natural turf pitches and six multi-use courts, all of which are floodlit. For the floodlighting alone there’s 101 columns, 604 lights and 480 miles of cable. The whole project has taken four years start to finish and the consultants involved in the project have hailed it as the largest private and most technologically advanced facility in the north of England. Sport of a different kind is available at Muggles, the students’ recreational centre and café. Whether it is challenging a friend to the assault course or the climbing wall or racing them round the bike track, go-karting track or inline skate course – there is never a dull moment there. If the North Yorkshire weather puts paid to outdoor activities, there is an extensive gaming area, DVD library, karaoke, DJ and instrument area and a 3D cinema for the latest releases. No expense has been spared in providing pupils with a similar calibre of facilities in the classroom. A science complex provides the perfect area to pursue the subjects, Home Economics has its own cookery school, the Business Department is impressive with designated work areas and boardrooms and there’s an extensive art and fashion department with a complete photographic studio and pottery kilns. When the school decided to improve its

drama and music department there was the installation of sound booths, mixing studios and performance classrooms as well as QE’s very own 330-seat theatre, complete with set areas, backstage dressing rooms and sound and light booth. With both QE College and The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s named as the top two schools in the North of England, and both in the country’s top 20, according to the Daily Telegraph’s Independent Schools’ League Table from A*/A A-Level and equivalent results in 2016, you can’t ignore the fact that QE now offers a world class education. The majority of Year 13 leavers go on to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including Oxford and Cambridge and those belonging to the Russell and former 1994 group. The ethos of assessing every student individually and finding out what he or she enjoys or is good at, gives pupils the basis and confidence to pursue subjects at which they are successful. The Queen Ethelburga’s motto is “to be the best that I can with the gifts that I have” – with the next open day on Saturday 11 March – perhaps that’s a date for the diary to find out exactly how they achieve that.

Owner Lois started Little Alligators around two-and-a-half years ago, but in the last 18 months, things have really taken off for the one-stop children’s shop. “I have gained faith in my eye for design and have developed confidence when buying,” says Lois. “Little Alligators has become known for its quality and different ideas for children’s entertainment that I had hoped for in the beginning. Things really are going from strength to strength and there are lots of new and exciting things to come. “I have a great support network in my family and friends. They are ever honest with their thoughts on products and plans alike. I think that being able to listen to them and to my customers has really helped. But ultimately knowing that the decisions are mine to make – good and bad, has really helped me push forward. Finding things that people love as much as me is really rewarding. “I have some fabulous new lines coming in from some of my existing suppliers, and as ever I am keeping a keen eye out for some new and exciting toy and games. I have a few buying trips planned where i hope to have a few more exclusive lines added to Little Alligators range. Any tips for people setting out in business today? “Find an industry you have some experience with (I have four children that are enormously helpful in finding good children entertainment!) and one that you feel you can bring something a little different to, then have faith in yourself, a passion for your business will really shine through and customers really respond well to that.” 45 Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, HG2 0NL www.littlealligators.com

The heart of a golf club is its members and it is vital that we look after the ones we have as they are the best ambassadors for the club.” The club have introduced a new academy category perfect for those wanting to learn to play and become their members of the future, while their free “Get into Golf ” sessions will be managed by two PGA golf professionals. She also designs the online collection. “Initially, it was a lot more focussed on our online collection,” she says. “Now, we produce a lot more bespoke pieces, which allow the customer to get their own personalised item, tailored to their body shape. “We are launching the new collection, which also incorporates kids wear – a new venture within Prodiga. Designing the kid’s collection to work alongside the adults has been a really wonderful experience.” Hand-beaded detail has become a signature element of their clothing and has allowed Prodiga to generate a defined look which has been key to their success. Headteacher Helen Stiles Richmond House School Choosing the right school for your child can be a difficult decision. Take a look at the following tips, which may make your decision easier.

Ask about the curriculum

It’s never too early. If you put your child’s name down at a number of schools from an early age, they will keep you updated about open days.

Independent schools can choose their own curriculum. Consider the different subjects taught, class sizes, teacher-pupil ratios, specialist teaching, what exams are taken and when. When looking at external results of secondary schools take into consideration the value added as well as the grades, the numbers of pupils at the school, and their requirements at entry level.

Consider the location

Ask the pupils

Often it is more convenient if a school is within an easy commute of your home or workplace. Ensure it has the breakfast clubs and after school care provision that meet your requirements.

They are the most honest! Find out what the children like best about the school.

Start gathering information

Do your research

Order a prospectus and look at their website and social media. Twitter and Facebook often give an excellent insight into a school. Read the newsletters to get an idea of their activities and achievements.

Look at the facilities, lessons and activities

Why not prioritise the importance of features such as sports pitches, music and drama facilities, language provision and extra-curricular clubs and activities? Many independent primary schools are linked with a secondary school, with most pupils moving into that secondary school. A smoother transition may be beneficial for your child.

Visit the school

Official Open Days are the times where the school showcases its best features. Many schools offer Open Doors during the working day and this is a great opportunity to see what goes on in a normal working day. If you prefer, ring to arrange a visit.

Trust your instincts

After finding out everything you can, you will probably have a feeling of which school you trust and which you think would best suit your child. Go with that feeling – you know your child best.
