The Harrogate showroom’s Christmas window

WHATEVER YOUR INDIVIDUAL STYLE, FURNISH & FETTLE CAN MAKE YOUR HOME UNIQUE TO YOU.

Personalised space ooking at the latest home trends is a great way to get inspired, but when all is said and done, your space should reflect your style. And that’s exactly what Furnish & Fettle’s interior design service is here for. “We take time to understand a customer’s personality and help them achieve the look and feel they want,” says Furnish & Fettle coowner, Eleanor Goddard. “We pay attention to what the customer wants and create something bespoke. We don’t just do one look.” With an extensive library of fabrics and colour samples, this statement couldn’t be truer. Both of their branches are home to a wide range of high-end, leading designer brands including Colefax And Fowler, GP & J Baker, Mulberry Home, Linwood, and Paint & Paper Library – soon to take the interior design world by storm. Though Furnish & Fettle only opened their Wetherby showroom in June 2016 and their Harrogate one in June 2017, the teams have been established for many years. Formerly working for high street interior company

L

James Brindley, their interior designers have a friendly, approachable and professional attitude underpinned by relevant qualifications and years of hands-on experience. Co-owners Glyn and Eleanor Goddard had taken on a couple of property renovations before, while Eleanor had developed a passion for making curtains in her spare time. Both had a wealth of business expertise and decided the time had come to get out of the rat race and to take on a new challenge together. As well as a well-stocked library of samples, both branches have room settings, so you can envision the look you want to achieve. From stocking a gorgeous range of homeware, to expertly covering upholstery and fitting curtains, the team can help you create your perfect home. When it comes to complete makeovers, it is your project and you can have as much or as little involvement as you desire. The team prides itself on its strong relationships and its established client base. You may even recognise one or two members of the team at the Harrogate branch, thanks to the store’s appearance on Harrogate: A Yorkshire Christmas, which aired on Channel 5 in December. Furnish & Fettle were one of the stores involved in the town’s window dressing competition and were pipped to the post by a whisker. However, the programme gave the showroom a great chance to show the world the great work it can do. Whether you would like your window dressing or your entire home made over,

contact Furnish & Fettle to book an initial consultation at your home. Furnish & Fettle have an online store with a beautiful range of designer samples to click through. Look out for new designs this coming year, as the online store continues to expand. Whatever your style, Eleanor and her team are dedicated to creating the ‘wow-factor’ in your home. And with a money back guarantee on their interior design service if you are unhappy, you are in safe hands at Furnish & Fettle. Home from home How Margaret found a happy new life at The Chocolate Works Care Village. By Cyd Akrill MBE, Head of Operations, Springfield Healthcare. argaret is sassy, smart and independent. Margaret has a smile for everyone. Margaret cares for her friends, comforting them when they are frightened. Margaret lives life to the full, going to the gym, watching films at the cinema and having lunch in the pub. Margaret lives at The Chocolate Works Care Village. This is her story…

M

Margaret never, ever wanted to leave her cosy, sheltered accommodation. It was her home. “Carry me out in a box,” she told her family with alarming regularity, “and never ever put me in a care home”. Widowed many years ago and with no children, Margaret was being cared for by a number of relatives who were finding it increasingly difficult to cope. Margaret’s memory simply wasn’t as good and increasingly she was becoming introverted and sad, a shadow of her former self. Heartbroken, Margaret’s family decided that the time had come to look at alternatives, and when they saw The Chocolate Works Care Village they were completely wowed. As it’s a brand new

12 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

facility, places were available and on visiting they liked more than anything the feel of the place, the staff and the atmosphere. There were a range of residential options available including apartments and care suites and it was also important to the family that as Margaret’s condition develops further there won’t be a need to move her again as The Chocolate Works also offers specialist nursing care as well as sensitive and dignified palliative care. Margaret’s birthday was used as an excuse to take a ‘holiday’ to The Chocolate Works in the form of a short respite stay for a few weeks. And the rest as they say is history …. Margaret’s family have said that it was one of the most difficult decisions they have ever been involved in, however, with hindsight, they wish they had acted sooner. A birthday party was held at her new home with her

new friends and Margaret has not looked back. Every day, without fail, she now asks to stay at The Chocolate Works and will tell anyone and everyone how much she loves living there. She has a best friend as well as a wide circle of friends, they eat together, they enjoy music together, they have their hair and nails done. And not forgetting the improvements in her mobility by using the on- site gym equipment and taking part in fun movement classes. All in all, Margaret is happier than she has been in years. If you can relate to the situation that Margaret and her family found themselves in, please come and talk to us and find out how we can help you. NATIONAL RECOGNITION AS DAVID LISTER AND THE FAMILY TEAM WIN PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS.

David Lister receiving the national Associate Solicitor of the Year award from London barrister, Janet Bazley QC

Irwin Mitchell is leading the way stablished in 1912, Irwin Mitchell has long been a source of support for national and international organisations and institutions, small and medium-sized businesses and private individuals, not only providing a broad range of legal services, but also outstanding integrity, a pioneering service and impartial guidance. Fast forward 106 years and Irwin Mitchell’s leading private wealth family team is recognised as one of the largest in the UK – ranking in the highest tier in Yorkshire – and such is their commitment to delivering a high level of service, they recently took home two prestigious accolades at the National Family Law Awards. The Ballroom, South Bank provided the glamorous setting for the seventh National Family Law Awards and taking home the coveted crown of Associate Solicitor of the Year was Leeds-based solicitor David Lister. The Birmingham team was awarded Family Team of the Year, highlighting that the firm’s exceptional reputation for family and divorce law is not limited to one area. The awards followed a number of recent accolades for the team, with national head of family Ros Bever having been named in eprivateclient's 50 Most Influential List. After receiving his award, Lister, who grew up in Rotherham, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be recognised individually at the

awards, and of course thrilled that our work has been rewarded on a national stage. Across all of our offices, we're proud to have one of the best family teams in the country, which has only been highlighted even further with this award. “We and the other Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth teams have been on an amazing run of awards and nominations in recent months, so it's absolutely fantastic to personally contribute to that. It felt good to bring the award back to Yorkshire where I was born and raised.”

‘I'm absolutely delighted to be recognised individually at the awards, and of course thrilled that our work has been rewarded on a national stage.’

Lister started working at the age of 15 and went on to work three back to back jobs throughout his A-level and full-time university studies. Now he works for a top ranked divorce law team in Yorkshire and says building a name for himself in his chosen field has been a real challenge, but one he hopes he overcame without jeopardising his credibility: “I recall a tutor once telling me that my law degree was pointless because, with my background, I would not be able to use it. “I now represent high net worth individuals both nationally and internationally, often in High Court proceedings, and my clients expressly value my straight talking, no nonsense approach. “I offer practical, tactical and most importantly, realistic advice at the outset and I will stand up for my clients and shield them, but also ‘hold their hand’ when they need it.” And that’s not all - Lister also applies his expertise and ability to making a difference in the local community and holds the position of chairman of a Yorkshire-based charity which supports young children and adults who are survivors or sexual violence and abuse – an issue which has cast a shadow over Rotherham, where he grew up. If you need legal advice, contact David Lister at Irwin Mitchell on 0114 274 4639, or by email David.Lister@IrwinMitchell.com

Each screening offers a real sense of community, bringing together outdoor enthusiasts who are into all sorts of outdoor pursuits, and there are free prize giveaways at every event too. The tour is part of the wider Banff World Tour, which travels the globe each year, visiting nearly 50 countries and reaching more than 400,000 people worldwide. One of the films featuring this year is The Frozen Road by Yorkshireman Ben Page. He embarked on a solo bikepacking journey in the Canadian Artic, and his film begins with visions of perfect solitude, but as the latitude increases and the mercury falls bellows -30c, he discovers what it truly means to travel alone. Here he talks about his inspiration, challenges faced in the Artic and most memorable moments.

Where did your interest in cycling stem from? I was brought up in a very outdoor family so being outside and sports has been an integral part of my childhood and adult life. I really enjoyed cycling and used to race road bikes full-time over in Europe, then realised I wasn’t very good at racing and decided to use the bike as a tool for transport rather than as a tool for racing. I went off to university and was daydreaming where I was meant to be, and during that time the idea of cycling around the world became cemented, so I told myself that I would make it happen. When I finished my studies I made sure I had saved up enough money to go and cycle around the world for three years. What were some of the challenges you faced? The Frozen Road was one of the hardest periods of the entire ride. It was through a Canadian winter, far above the Arctic Circle so temperatures were -40C, there were storms and packs of wolves – it was scary and dangerous conditions. The challenges were maintaining motivation, keeping going and not losing sight of the goal. It took a lot of mental strength and focus. What were some of your best moments? I’m really motivated by landscapes and being in remote wild places. Some of the best and

The trip was initially dreamt up whilst cycling through the Atacama Desert in Chile. I was riding through there in the middle of summer, it was hot and I was without water. I was reading a lot of stories by Jack London and was swept up by the romanticism of his writings and my mind started to drift away from the big sandy rocky desert to somewhere as far away as I could imagine. This idea became the frozen road adventure. The ride was from Whitehorse to a small Inuit

village of the shores of the Arctic Ocean. I followed a variety of dog sledging trails, highways and frozen rivers and finished off riding across a frozen ocean for 80km. It was a magical sort place for a Yorkshire lad to be. There’s a quote in Ben with his the film: “You stand on parents at the map of your the end of his experiences and look journey out at the blank space beyond.” Riding the frozen road pushed the boundaries of my map further but there is still so much more to go. What was one of the most difficult moments? The key narrative is that I get trapped on this river and spent three days pushing my bike through the snow with -30c temperatures and very little food. That was the hardest, scariest, most dangerous moment for sure. What do you hope audiences take away from the film? The responses that I have gotten from showing at different festivals is that how refreshing and honest it is as a film. It involves a lot of struggles and mental strains and I think they come across in the film. I would like people to see what it is really like - it is a far cry away from just beautiful images and Instagram hashtags.

Blazing a trail BOUTIQUE STYLE HIIT WORKOUT CLASS COMES TO LEEDS. fter a massively successful launch in London last year, the revolutionary BLAZE studio arrives at David Lloyd Leeds this spring, offering a whole new way of working out. BLAZE offers a state-of-the-art HIIT training concept (combat, conditioning and cardio) in a dedicated futuristic studio. It tracks heart rate via MYZone belts and the classes’ data appears in screens so everyone can make sure they are training the right intensity zone at the right time. Many gym goers are already hooked on their FitBit data and wearable fitness tech, which undoubtedly motivates by giving instant results. But 2018 is set to be a year where tech and fitness collide like never before. Now, cutting-edge technology is being used to motivate in a group exercise environment where participants can instantly track their progress against others in the same class, allowing them to support each other, compete and push themselves harder to achieve their goals. Results can then be downloaded and reviewed via mobile technology away from the class. Classes run for either 45 or 55 minutes, with members moving from station to station to do rounds of moves that last either three or four minutes per round. The combat section of the class tests core strength and agility, while the Woodway treadmills are set to a steep incline for maximum cardiovascular activity, the weights section works on arm and leg strength. The signature class lasts 45 minutes and

promises to deliver results for total fitness. The alternative 55-minute class packs more of a punch and offers a more challenging workout as participants move from station to station, resting for 30 seconds between each one. The classes are set to powerful soundtracks mixed by Ministry of Sound DJs, renowned for their epic dance mixes. In the boutiquestyle studio, the lighting beats in time with music and movements, creating a unique and exhilarating fitness experience. Scott Mykoluk, general manager at David Lloyd Leeds, says: “BLAZE is set to be our signature class at Leeds, bringing a boutique style of fitness. What sets BLAZE apart from other city boutique studios is that the class is offered alongside the gym membership at David Lloyd Leeds. It means members can enjoy the boutique style studio, alongside the luxurious changing facilities and showers, state-of-the-art gym facilities and other timetabled classes – all within their membership price.” For enquiries, email sales.leeds@davidlloyd.co.uk

Holiday? Snow problem PLANNING A FAMILY GETAWAY THIS HALF-TERM? PHOEBE SEYMOUR LOOKS AT IDEAL FAMILY BREAKS, BOTH AT HOME AND ABROAD. t this time of year, when the skies are grey and the temperatures are low, nothing lifts the spirits more than having a holiday to look forward to. And with half-term coming up in February, now is the perfect time to plan a family getaway. When it comes to winter holidays, we tend to fall into two camps – those who embrace the beautiful yet chilly outdoors, and those who wish to escape to much sunnier climes. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up every kind of winter holiday, from British breaks, to exotic getaways.

Avoriaz is a French mountain resort in the heart of the Portes du Soleil

30 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

SKIING HOLIDAYS Enjoy the seasonal snow and get the whole family active with a skiing holiday. Significantly heavy snowfall in January has meant that now is a great time to hit the resorts in the French and Austrian Alps. Avoriaz is a fantastic destination for families as it is safe, convenient and has the highest and most snow-sure slopes in the Portes du Soleil area. Childcare is also provided at the Village des Enfants in the centre of the resort. Obergurgl in Austria is another great option as it is picturesque and has easier slopes for beginners. Children from as young as three can join the Bobo Skiclub or the indoor Bobo Kindergarten. If you are looking to travel further afield, Tremblant in the French-speaking area of Canada is a purposebuilt village lined with cobbled streets and vibrantlycoloured buildings designed in the old Québec style. It is also home to a highly-rated ski school for children. Closer to home, Scotland currently has five operational resorts. Glencoe (www.glencoemountain.co.uk) has the best snow cover and is an area of outstanding beauty. Skiing lessons are available for children as young as five, while experienced skiers can enjoy the longest and the steepest ski run in Scotland. MAIN PICTURE: The volcanic mountains of Gros and Petit Piton in St Lucia INSET: Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote

Sunny winter holidays Say goodbye to your winter blues with a holiday in a much warmer part of the world. The Canary Islands are within easy reach with temperatures in the low 20s, while the Caribbean is at its hottest and driest right now. When it comes to the Canaries, Lanzarote is a good all-rounder, with plenty of family facilities in the Los Pocillos area, close to the popular Puerto del Carmen resort. Inland, Timanfaya National Park offers dramatic landscapes for an action-packed week. Over in the Caribbean, St Lucia is home to some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches, including the golden strip of Anse Chastanet, while volcanic mountains Gros and Petit Piton are perfect for hiking and picture opportunities. The Bay Gardens Beach Club Resort is family-friendly and is next to Reduit Beach. Whether you stay on the strip in South Beach, or at a child-friendly resort nearby, there are plenty of fantastic restaurants and a lively atmosphere in Miami. The Fontainebleau offers one of the most luxurious spas in town, an interactive children’s water-play area and a Kids Camp. Find your perfect winter sun holiday at www.lastminute.com.

“When it comes to the Canaries, Lanzarote is a good all-rounder, with plenty of family facilities in the Los Pocillos area, close to the popular Puerto del Carmen resort.” Great British holidays Appreciate the beaches, forests and greenery all around us, by packing up the car and taking a trip to a popular UK holiday destination. Forest Holidays (www.forestholidays.co.uk) offer luxurious cabins in ten idyllic locations including nearby Sherwood Forest, Blackwood Forest in the south and Ardgarten Argyll in Scotland. Each cabin includes a hot tub and a Forest range of activities from cycling and canoeing to Forest Holidays Ranger activities for kids. It may be too cold to paddle, but there is still plenty to do in the winter months at some of Britain’s favourite seaside towns. A Swanage, trip to one of Whitby’s (www.visitwhitby.com) museums such Dorset as the Captain Cook Museum and a hot chocolate in one of the town’s many tearooms is sure to keep the troop happy. Book a holiday cottage off one of the winding gothic streets or a short drive away in the idyllic Robin Hood’s Bay. Over in Blackpool, donkey rides may be off the table, but thrill seekers will be pleased to hear that the Blackpool Pleasure Beach (www.blackpoolpleasurebeach.com) is open in February, along with Nickelodeon Land for younger children. Further down in Dorset (www.visit-dorset.com), you will find two more traditional seaside towns – Swanage and Weymouth. Wrap up warm and go fossil hunting on Chesil Beach or enjoy an indoor activity such as the Sealife Centre in Weymouth if it’s a rainy day. In Cornwall (www.visitcornwall.com) now may not be the time to sunbathe on one of St Ives white beaches, but its narrow winding streets lined with fisherman’s cottages are lovely to take a stroll down, while indoor activities feature historic houses, castles, museums and World Heritage Sites.

STAYCATIONS Alternatively, why not stay home and take a few daytrips to the many amazing museums and galleries right on our doorstep? Our region has a wealth of attractions, from Yorkshire Wildlife Park (www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com) in Doncaster, to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (www.ysp.org.uk) in Leeds, which is great for walkers and art-lovers alike. York meanwhile, offers everything from a fantastic shopping experience with its famous Shamble Markets and quaint boutiques, and museums such as the Jorvik Viking Centre (www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk) for history buffs and York’s Chocolate Story (www.yorkschocolatestory.com) for sweet tooths. Closer to home is the Kelham Island Museum, while Weston Park and the Millennium Gallery have a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Check out Discovery Day on 20, 21 or 22 February and Nature Detectives on 17 February this half-term at Weston Park (www.museums-sheffield.org.uk).

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

VALENTINE’S DAY

Who said was dead? IS YOUR LIFE LACKING PASSION? HANNAH SANDERS MEETS THREE COUPLES WHO GAVE THEIR LOVE A HELPING HAND… veryone’s a sucker for a romantic gesture, and with Valentine’s Day approaching the pressure is on to show your significant other that the dull routine of daily life has not put out the fires of passion. A card from the local paper shop and flowers from the garage forecourt simply won’t cut it. Of course, if money is no object you can go over-the-top with a grand gesture that is simply impossible to ignore. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were two of the biggest film stars of their era and in 1969 Burton paid $1m to buy her a 68 carat diamond. Pretty impressive, but even this stunning declaration of love was no guarantee of longevity. Two marriages and two divorces later she sold the sparkler for $5m and donated the cash to charity. Edward VIII became King of England in 1936. But by December of that year, deeply in love with a married American woman named Wallis Simpson, he was forced to choose between her or his throne. He chose her. She divorced her husband and they were married the next year. Was this the ultimate romantic sacrifice or the selfish pursuit of pleasure? The jury’s still out on that one. Meanwhile, closer to home, we asked readers about romantic gestures that made an impact on their partner. From lucky numbers to long thought-out proposals, it seems there are some couples keeping the flame alive.

E

A graduation with a big surprise… Sarah Walker was in for an surprise when her husband Matthew proposed during university graduation. Matt had the ring for months before but just didn’t know the right time to ask. Lying in bed the night before Matt said he just thought, “why not?” It was a perfect opportunity as everyone that was important to them would be there. Throughout the ceremony he was nervous and impatient to get outside. Then, it was the question of when was the right time, but thankfully when everyone came together for a picture, he got down on one knee and popped the question. Sarah burst into tears and said yes, and the moment was even captured on Radio Sheffield. Now married, the couple are expecting their first child this year. For Sarah and Matt, romantic gestures are a big part of their relationship as it is a way of showing their affection towards one another.

VALENTINE’S DAY

How to start the New Year with style Over the New Year, George and Laura took the next big step in their relationship and got engaged, for which George really pulled out all the stops. On New Year’s Day, George managed to get Laura out of the house so he could set up his proposal. Armed with string and sticky tape, George created a ‘washing line’ through their flat full of pictures, memories and notes of their time together. At the end of the string there was a book filled with reasons he wanted to marry her, as well as a note saying “read me and come into the other room”. When she went in he had their favourite song playing- “I knew I loved you” by Savage Garden with a light box reading “can this be forever?” He got down on one knee, popped the question and she said yes. Talking to George about why he felt it was the right time, he said; “I knew I wanted her for the rest of my life, so there was no point in waiting any longer.” January 1 also has some special meaning to George and his family as it would have been his Nan’s 80th birthday and he felt that it would become a day filled with happiness and would always hold a special meaning The one thing George regrets about the day was his outfit choice. He wore a ‘suit you would wear for a skype interview’ and it really wasn’t him. George went for well- worn jeans on the bottom with a ‘dad’ shirt, tie and blazer on the top. He said; “It felt right at the time to try and be a bit formal but afterwards I just felt silly… although at the time it did make her smile.”

A sweet love story on a very tight budget Shauna Naylor and her husband Dan, have been together for nearly 11 years now and their relationship started off with some of the sweetest gestures. On February 14 when they had little money and were living in a run-down room that didn’t even have wallpaper, Dan painted ‘Chez Danny’ onto the wall and hung fairy lights from the rafters, transforming a dingy dwelling into a beautiful bistro and served her a Valentine’s meal. There was a rickety old table with just a single flower in a glass while, playing in the background were Latin love songs. Shauna said that it “made her fall head over heels for him again”. The loved-up couple even have a special number- 433. This stemmed from listening to a record by a minimalist composer, Steve Reich, including a track that is four minutes and thirty-three seconds of just silence and whenever it came on instead of skipping it, they took that time to just be together. Shauna says every time they see those numbers now, they show their love for each other. We won’t pry… some things are best kept private. For Shauna and Dan it is the little things you do that show love. They feel that romantic gestures are a way of keeping that special bond alive.

EATING OUT

Executive chef Kanyana Williams

A feast of fish AN INVENTIVE MENU AND STYLISH SURROUNDINGS MAKE FOR A SWISH NIGHT – OR LUNCH – OUT AT FISK, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. ven on a grey Harrogate day with snowflakes swirling on the street, stepping into Fisk is a little like being ushered beyond the velvet rope into the VIP lounge of a swish private members’ club. The look is sleek and ultra-contemporary, all black slate, shining chrome, etched mirrors and subtle lighting. Throw in a Pol Roger Champagne menu and a sommelier selection of high-end wines and you have all the trapping required for a swish night out. But that’s only half the story, behind the style there is serious substance and one of the most inventive restaurant menus I have come across in quite a while. It’s mainly seafood with Asian influences, and the inspiration for both the food and the look comes from executive chef Kanyana Williams, working alongside her CEO husband Stuart. Born in Bangkok with parents who were both restaurant chefs, Kanyana says she “grew up in the kitchen” but she took her time before following in the family tradition, working in the fashion world for a few years before taking the plunge. There are already two restaurants bearing the Fisk name, one in Harrogate and one in Prestbury, with more launches planned later this year. We started with a couple of glasses of Pol

Roger Brut Reserve (£9). In this setting it seemed like the most natural thing in the world (even at lunchtime) and our first taste of Fisk’s fusion cuisine was a divine amuse bouche, succulent tiger prawn lollipops with spring onions. The menu has a huge amount of choice including separate pages dedicated to lobster and oyster dishes. Make sure you study it closely and read right to the end - the back page is Menu Black, a secret menu created by Kanyana “using an indulgence of the finest seafood in season.” We shared a generous starter of seafood tempura with wasabi (£16). Served with two delicious dipping sauces, one hot and fiery the other sharp and sweet, this was an irresistible plateful of fish and shellfish morsels, fried in the crispest light batter. For mains I could not resist selecting from Menu Black, a wild king prawn curry with Thai red sauce (£39). This really was a spectacular plate of food, with the largest, juiciest, freshest prawns in a sauce packed with fresh herbs and spices and just enough heat to bring out all the other flavours. For contrast my friend Jane, a fellow escapee from daily newspapers, relished a delicate dish of steamed sea bass with mushroom, chilli and ginger (£19). The gentle fragrance of the sauce and the gorgeous moist flakiness of the fish made this

a spectacular main course to linger long in the memory. Superlative standards were maintained as we shared three side dishes - broccoli and baby corn in a perky chilli and garlic dressing (£5), Pad Thai street noodles (£7) and steamed jasmine rice (£3). There is a small dessert menu but we rounded off our meal in a blaze of colour with a shared selection of Asian petit fours (£4), lovely snapshots of sweetness stylishly laid out on a black slate. There’s a separate lunch menu if you don’t want to go a la carte, and a new relaxed buffet-style Sunday lunch experience offers another good reason to visit this original venue where everyone’s a VIP. EATING OUT

The verdict is in… JUDGES COUNTRY HOUSE HOTEL IS A WINNER, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR. ever mind fit for a king – back in 1970s, it was judges who really knew how to dine and stay in style. Evidence comes in the grand form of Judges Country House Hotel. Originally known as Kirklevington Hall, the hotel became the home from home for judges en route to Middlesborough courts in that era. Proof can be found in the little details of this grand Victorian house, from the rows of gorgeous leather-bound legal books on the shelves, to the large oil painting of a wigged judge looking down on the guests in the drawing room/bar area. But it’s not just legal figures who would feel right at home here. Nowadays, it’s the perfect place for couples to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Surrounded by 22 acres of manicured gardens and woodland, you are sure to spot a few rabbits and squirrels frolicking around whilst following one of the colour-coded walking trails. All 21 rooms are generously sized and overflowing with traditional charm and are coupled with modern en suite bathrooms, but for the real wow-factor, the honeymoon suite has all the ingredients for a romantic getaway. Whether you are newly-weds or an established couple celebrating a special occasion, the honeymoon suite’s dramatic four-poster bed, huge Victorian fireplace and big bubbling bathtub - along with a bottle of fizz on ice, of course - are sure to set the right mood. Dinner time is equally magical. Seated in

N

the cushy drawing room next to a roaring open fire, my partner and I grazed on an amuse bouche of mini chicken and tomato skewers and crab cakes, washed down with beetroot shooters. We were then taken through to the conservatory, where we were met with white linen-covered tables, immaculate silverware and wonderful views of the gardens. On our visit, there was a thick layer of glittering snow on the ground and, along with the cosy glow of old-fashioned lamp posts, the gardens looked like a scene from a traditional Christmas card. Warm buttered bread rolls and two sparkling glasses of Judges House Champagne Brut (175ml, £10.50) were followed by delicious starters of creamy Ribblesdale goats cheese and curd (£9) and comforting mushroom velouté (three courses for £25). But the mains were certainly the stars of the show. My sesame seed-coated swordfish (three courses for £25), with its juicy centre was beautifully paired with a crunchy, green, vegetable salad, boiled eggs with warm runny yolks and zesty pesto dressing, while my partner vowed that his Himalayan salt-aged fillet (£34.50) was the best steak he’d ever tasted. Desserts of heavenly dark chocolate mousse (£7) with pieces of burnt white chocolate for me, and blueberry clafoutis (three courses for £25) with cool coconut ice cream in the conservatory were then nicely rounded off with coffee and petit fours (£4.95) back in

the warmth of the drawing room. No stayover would be complete without a cooked breakfast, and my poached eggs and spinach on toasted English muffins and my partner’s cinnamon French toast with maple syrup, accompanied by a rack of toast, a pot of coffee and two glasses of fresh juice (£18.95 per person) certainly set us up for the day. With experiences like this, it is no wonder Judges has been awarded Country House of the Year 2018 by TripAdvisor, to accompany their 2017 AA Rosette Award and Cesar Winner 2018 title awarded by The Good Hotel Guide. Our verdict? If you are looking for a romantic getaway in the idyllic countryside within easy reach of Leeds, York and Harrogate, Judges Country House Hotel is guilty as charged. NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF HARLOW CARR PLANT CENTRE AND SHOP, RELISHES WINTER GARDEN WALKS AND LOOKS FORWARD TO AN EXCITING GARDENING YEAR. ebruary is the vanguard of spring and I look forward to seeing the new shoots emerging from the bleak, cold earth to herald another growing year. What really enlivens a late winter sunny day is not only this promise of things to come but also the many early flowering shrubs and flowers which bring cheer to this time of year. February is the month when plants use the available light filtering down through bare stemmed shrubs and trees to emerge, grow and flower before the leaves unfurl and block out the sun to the earth beneath. Gardener's use this layering technique to get more colour into their gardens for longer. At Harlow Carr we showcase these beautiful heralds of spring in our 'Winter Walk' garden and delight our visitors with swathes of snowdrops and early flowering iris, crocus and cyclamen under planted through the larger, heavily scented, shrubs such as Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn' or Daphne bholua or the many vibrant coloured stems of the dogwood collection running throughout the garden. Many people do not realise how much colour can be achieved with early spring bulbs and colourful stems until they see the results at Harlow Carr. A favourite dogwood of mine is Cornus 'Midwinter Fire' which has glorious orange stems that positively glow in the morning sunshine at this time of the year. To encourage our visitors to try out a patch of winter colour in their own garden we have produced a 'Winter Walk' plant collection in the Plant Centre with all the plants used in the garden available to take home and bring a bit of winter cheer.

Great service, good quality… THOSE ARE THE QUALITIES THAT HAVE KEPT TILES AND MOSAICS ON TOP FOR 45 YEARS. ho Do We Think We Are was a classic album produced by spectacular rock group Deep Purple in 1973… which happens to be the year the idea of a company specialising in importing tiles was first conceived… this idea came to fruition in 1974 when Ceramique Internationale was formed. Fast forward 45 years and Tiles and Mosaics has become one of the UK’s leading specialists and with over four decades of experience operating across a multitude of industries, they have a proven track record of delivering a quality service every time. As director, Cameron ensures all aspects of the business are managed, and here, we take a glimpse into his world and road to success.

W

What was the inspiration behind Tiles and Mosaics?

The idea came to fruition in 1974 when Ceramique Internationale was formed and the name Tiles and Mosaics was a result of upgrading our website. From the start of the process we were advised only people who knew us would find us, and we needed to have our product in the name, hence www.tilesandmosaics.co.uk was born and we decided the showroom needed to branded the same. What is a typical working day like for you?

It starts with answering e-mails and as soon as I have cleared my inbox, I check our bank balance to ensure we are up to date with all our payments. We like to ensure we pay our suppliers on time and most important of all, I certify that customers who have promised to pay us have done so – cash flow is king! What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Survival. Seriously, we’ve survived a number of recessions and we are now navigating our way through the uncertain business terrain 68 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

resulting from Brexit. Throughout all of this we’ve managed to keep our loyal team of staff together and it’s that team effort that I am most proud of.

Team leader: Cameron Fraser

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

We work with a product that is constantly changing, both in terms of technology and design, hence every single project we work on is different, every client has different requirements, every architect and designer has different ideas and every manufacturer has a different solution. The variety of projects and the every changing customer profile is the most enjoyable part for me.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Spending time with family first and foremost, but aside from family, I find time to play tennis (badly) and golf (even worse). I love skiing, when possible, and above all my passion is drumming. The best release valve in the world is LRLLRLRR, for those that know their rudiments.

Hopefully fit and well and still enjoying quality time with my ever-growing family, whilst continuing to drum at every opportunity. Do you have plans to expand further?

The plan is to keep the business stable and profitable. Growth is always a goal, but not at the expense of margin. What do you think has made Tiles and Mosaics a success?

Being in business with my long time pal from school Peter Vann and surrounding ourselves with a loyal and positive team – the sooner you can get rid of negativity the better, and only let people let you down once. Why Leeds?

The business originated in Bradford and we obtained our current site in Leeds simply because it was a good location for our distribution activities at the time. We soon saw that Leeds, as a geographical base, had far more potential than Bradford, and the move cemented our position as a major retailer in our sector.

As a ‘Gold’ rated business, and, because they follow the guidelines of Green tourism, the Devonshire Arms is on top form for making savings on heating costs, electricity usage and waste output. Also, with the stories behind their more locally-sourced produce, they sell more plates of food and have a more engaged loyal customer base. At the Devonshire Arm, you can have the same luxurious stay but feel a little less guilty about treating yourself.
