On a mission
BLENHEIM’S PAUL BLACKBURN IS CHANGING THE WAY THE PROPERTY MARKET WORKS – TO BENEFIT BUYERS, SELLERS AND CLIENTS ALIKE.
hen you see a distinctive, beautiful home up for sale or being built in Sheffield, North Derbyshire or Yorkshire, there’s a very good chance that it will have the Blenheim signature attached. There are two distinct companies – Blenheim Park Developments builds luxury homes across Sheffield, Yorkshire and Derbyshire while Blenheim Park Estates sells beautiful homes in the same areas. Managing director Paul Blackburn is a man with a mission to completely recalibrate the property market, in a way that benefits buyers, sellers and clients who want the finest homes designed and built. “We are different,” he says. “When it comes to attention to detail we’ll pull out all the stops to create your dream home. Customers who come across us for the first time just can’t comprehend the attention to detail and the lengths
W

we will go in order to give them precisely what they want.” If there is one key element that sets the Blenheim team apart from its contemporaries it is this. They listen. When it comes to building a new home, it’s not just about following the latest trends or filling it with the latest gadgets; it’s about sitting back and listening, very carefully, to what the customer really wants. This might mean a client approaches Blenheim and says they want a new home of a particular size in a certain area or postcode... say the Hope Valley in Derbyshire for example. Or there may be an existing home that requires partial or complete renovation. Paul and his team will look at the options, search for the land and even help with the negotiations to acquire it. Getting planning permission is one of Blenheim’s specialities, so when it comes to designing a home it’s all about
catering to client’s needs while also knowing what will and won’t get that all-important sign-off from the local authority. One recent example involved a property being built in a conservation area where long-standing trees might have put the project at risk. By designing an eco-friendly, curving driveway so the trees were not just preserved but turned into a unique feature in a brand new home, planning delays were avoided. Whether it is designing a new home from scratch or redeveloping an existing property, Paul will sit down with the clients and Blenheim’s in-house architects to design a bespoke home that truly reflects the purchaser’s lifestyle. If you like cooking and want the kitchen to be the heart of the home, every single detail will be considered, from the distance between the workspace and the oven to the size of the dining area.
PROMOTION
Fancy a perfect country home with roses round the front door, a southfacing garden with traditional lawns and flower beds? Or something more modern with clean straight lines, hard surfaces and low maintenance? With Blenheim it’s all about project management, and clients can be involved as much or as little as they desire. They will project manage everything down to the last detail. If you’d rather be hands on, or perhaps you have your own favourite interior designer or architect who can work alongside the Blenheim team, you’ll still have one point of contact for every aspect of the job from the roof to the drains to the landscaping. You will never find yourself ‘on hold’ and passed from one department to the next. Paul adds: “No other company in Sheffield does what we do. When you go to a traditional building firm they will offer you ‘the product’. They have their
way of doing things, and that’s that. “But Blenheim will offer you a home that is considered, and thought about, and designed to meet the individual’s needs. This is a level of service that makes a home exceptional and special. It’s never about us, it is always about the clients.” Blenheim Park Developments started in 2004 building developments to sell. After a few years they diversified and started building beautiful bespoke homes for specific clients. As for the estate agency side of the business, that started with a single client, for whom Blenheim were building a property, voicing dissatisfaction at the service being offered by existing estate agents as he tried to sell his home. And so Blenheim Park Estates, specialising in selling beautiful homes and offering the bespoke service that distinctive properties of a certain calibre demand, came into being. All viewings
are accompanied by a designated team member who really takes the time to know the property inside and out, leaving the seller to go out and get on with their day. Then, once an acceptable offer is reached, Blenheim can handle every stage of the sale, with recommended solicitors and removal firms, to cater for every eventuality. Moving house is always a stressful business, so why not steer clear of all that aggravation and let Blenheim handle it? It’s not all millionaire mansions either. If you’re selling a smaller niche home with some unique features, from a city centre apartment to a smart townhouse to a barn conversion, Blenheim will help put you in touch with the right potential buyers. Gbolahan Obisesan
INTERVIEW
Playing up DIRECTOR GBOLAHAN OBISESAN TALKS TO NORTHSIDE ABOUT THE NEW LEEDS PLAYHOUSE PRODUCTION, RANDOM. t’s all change for the Leeds Playhouse this year as it undergoes a major refurbishment. In fact, its entire 2018/2019 will be held in a pop-up theatre on its existing site whilst the building work takes place. The £15.8million project will see the building transformed with a new cityfacing entrance, improved access and the addition of a new studio theatre space, the Bramhall Rock Void. The Pop-Up season, in association with SOYO Leeds, includes Kes, Dinner 18:55, William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Around the World in 80 Days and Amanda Whittington’s Be My Baby. At the heart of this season is random, a remarkable one-woman play by awardwinning playwright Debbie Tucker Green, which sees an ordinary family caught up in a catastrophe that will change their lives forever. Actress Kiza Deen, known for her roles in Silent Witness and Hollyoaks, takes the lead in the play which runs from 4-16 February. Gbolahan Obisesan, who comes with a plethora of credits to his name, directs. The production is designed by set and costume designer Max Johns (Kes, Leeds Playhouse; Wendy and Peter Pan, Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh), who is joined by lighting designer Chloe Kenward, associate lighting designer Christopher Nairne and Leeds-based sound designer Xavier Velastin. The creative team will be joined by two new trainees to Leeds Playhouse, assistant director Jaasra Aslam and trainee sound designer Charlotte Bickley. We caught up with director Gbolahan Obisesan to find out a little bit more.
M
What attracted you to the play? random is an incredibly beautifully crafted play from the perspective of a young woman and her family. The play is unique in how it explores the human experience and emotional turmoil around the heartbreakingly social concern of knife crime. In the play we see the fragility and disorientation of a family’s experience of an unexpected incident. random plays alongside Kes in the Playhouse’s Pop-Up theatre. Is there a commonality between the two productions? Experiencing the two parallel stories I imagine would feel like a 50-year juxtaposition of the lives of two different working-class teenagers. It is open for interpretation, but I would suggest both plays have complimentary themes of isolation and the search for continual freedom from concern, and freedom of expression crucial to the perspectives of the characters being depicted. Ultimately it is the voice and experience of relatable but vulnerable teenagers, which means whether you yourself are a child of the baby-boomers, millennial or Generation Z. In these two plays about young people in Britain, we can potentially see ourselves, our families and the risks we must try to eradicate as a society for the next generation. How are you expecting the show to look? The production is a one woman show, with the actress shape-shifting and depicting multiple characters. The
production will inhabit the same stage environment as the two-man adaptation of Kes. Max, our stage designer, will utilise indicative furniture from familiar interior spaces that will create a stunning structural and playful landscape that will also potentially help enhance the lighting design. Kiza Deen takes the lead role in random, why is she so good for the part? I am absolutely delighted to be working with Kiza. She came into the audition room and totally blew us away. She connected with the world of the play, found a voice for the characters and showcased her talents and intuition as an actor. She has the depth to understand the range of emotions required to make random resonate with audiences and be affected by her performance. This is the first time you are directing a production in Leeds, what are you most looking forward to? I am immensely excited to be working with Leeds Playhouse on this production. Staging the production in the Pop-Up theatre will also be invigorating for everyone. It is inspiring that Leeds Playhouse has the desire to maintain its strong relationship with its community and audience before the new theatre building is reopened. random plays in Leeds Playhouse’s Pop-Up theatre, in association with SOYO Leeds, from 4-16 February. Arabian adventure OMAN IS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
The Muttrah district of Muscat at sunset
ombining breathtaking natural beauty with a well-preserved cultural heritage, the Sultanate of Oman is one of the least known, yet most exciting tourist destinations in the Middle East. The country perches on the south-east tip of the Arabian Peninsula, overlooking the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Within this stretch of land lies an amazing range of scenery, sights and activities. Visit the capital city of Muscat, which offers a glimpse of authentic Arabia with bustling waterfronts, souks and alleyways; explore magnificent forts and palaces, ancient fishing villages and archaeological sites; enjoy 4x4 excursions into the rolling dunes of Sharqiya Sands and the impressive peaks of the Hajar mountains; take a dhow trip and go snorkelling along the coastline of the Musandam Peninsula; or simply relax in the tropical atmosphere of Salalah.

Muscat
Nizwa
Muscat enchants visitors in a way that no other city in the Gulf can even begin to match. The old port area is the site of the sultan’s main palace and a fascinating place to wander around. There are three forts in Muscat, all of which took on their more or less present form in the 1580s during the Portuguese occupation of Muscat. Mutrah Fort sits on a hill while Jalali and Mirani forts guard the entrance to Muscat. All of the forts are still used by the police and/or military and are closed to the public, but it is permitted to photograph them. Muscat also has by far the best aquarium in the Gulf; all of the specimens on display are native to Omani waters and most are accompanied by thorough descriptions in English.
A two-hour drive from Muscat is the historic town of Nizwa, set amid palms and fringed by towering mountains. Once the capital in the sixth and seventh centuries, Nizwa is now known for the immense fortifications of its circular fort and the large, bustling souk where you can haggle for beautiful silver jewellery. Visit early on a Friday to see the local farmers bring their animals to be inspected, auctioned and sold to the highest bidders. Nizwa

Jabal Akhdar
Ras al Hadd Turtle Reserve
The area of Jabal Akhdar, meaning ‘Green Mountain’, forms part of the Al Hajar mountain range. They extend 300km from north-west to south-east, approximately 50km inland from the Gulf of Oman coast and are known as one of Oman’s most spectacular areas. The range is mostly desert, but at higher altitudes receives around 12 inches of precipitation annually, allowing the growth of shrubs and trees as well as agriculture and gives the mountain its name. The area is famous for its traditional rose water extraction and agricultural products including pomegranate, apricot, peach and walnut. The Jabal is mostly inhabited by the ancient Arab tribe Bani Riyam. Most descendants of the tribe are now in nearby towns such as Nizwa and Izki while some also inhabit Ibra.
Covering an area of 120 sq km of beach, two lagoons and coastal lands, the Ras al Hadd Turtle Reserve is one of the principal sites in the world to view the estimated 20,000 turtles that come to lay their eggs in the reserve. Turtles lay eggs all year round but the best time to view this event is between August and September along the 45km stretch of coast between Ras al Hadd and Ras al Ruwais. For visitors there is an excellent information centre providing further information about the turtles. Ras al Jinz is another Unesco-listed turtle nesting site. It is also an archaeological site containing a number of interesting graves and settlements from the prehistoric period. Explore the Sharqiya Sands by 4x4
Sharqiya Sands Further to the east is the spectacular desert landscape of Sharqiya Sands, where bedouin tribes live with their camels. Explore the rolling dunes on thrilling 4x4 drives or camel-back rides. There are also several campsites where you can watch the colours of the sunset over the desert before experiencing the silence of a night beneath innumerable twinkling stars.

WHEN TO TRAVEL: Oman is very hot and humid during the summer, while the winter months are much more bearable. The coast does remain humid throughout the year and, although the interior is warmer, the heat is dry and less oppressive. Between October and May are the ideal times to travel climate-wise, as summer temperatures on the coast frequently hit 40 degrees Celsius.
Cox & Kings offer smallgroup or private tours of Oman starting from £2,070 for their eight-night tour ‘Oman: An Arabian Odyssey’.The tour visits Muscat, the Ras al Jinz turtle reserve, Sharqiya Sands, Nizwa and Jabal Akhdar. For more information contact Spa Travel on 01937 845678.

HOLIDAYS FOR ADVENTURERS: Sri Lanka Sri Lanka is set for big things this year. Visiting today is made all the more special, as 2019 marks the ten-year anniversary since the end of a brutal civil war. Sri Lanka is renowned for its cave temples and rich wildlife; and areas that were off-limits have now opened their gates. Take the famous train ride from Kandy to Ella, climb Sigiriya Rock – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or go to the edge of the earth at World’s End – a sheer cliff with a drop of 880 metres. A must-do is visiting national parks Yala and Bundala – brimming with elephants, leopards and colourful birds. Best news is, you can actually stay there in a luxury, private cabin. Chena Huts are located in Yala National Park, surrounded by tropical jungle and turquoise ocean, so the safari never has to end. www.ugaescapes.com/chenahuts
Jordan Jordan is perfect for those seeking adventure. Travellers and history-buffs will find heaven, with its desert landscapes, bustling towns, and impressive relics from ancient civilisations. Petra and Aqaba in particular are must-see cities – with direct flights to the latter now running. Petra is deemed Jordan’s greatest attraction, whereas Aqaba is the only coastal city in the country, and a gateway to the famous Wadi Rum desert – known as The Valley of the Moon where Hollywood blockbuster The Martian was filmed. For a real once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, go floating in the Dead Sea – one of the country’s best natural experiences. It’s practically impossible to sink or swim here, so instead you can peacefully bob along in worldfamous waters.
HOLIDAYS FOR FAMILIES: Japan In a country currently sports-mad, with the Rugby World Cup 2019 and Tokyo Olympics 2020 coming up, it’s impossible to run out of things to do in Japan. Osaka is a go-to destination for 2019, as British Airways launches direct flights there this spring. Try local cuisine down the lively Dotonbori Strip and take a 15-minute bullet train to Kyoto – home to over 1,600 gorgeous temples. Or, wander around Kiyukan Aquarium, one of the world’s best, and ride rollercoasters at well-loved Universal Studios Japan for a memorable holiday kids will never forget. And to make it even more special, you can stay in The Park Front Hotel – an American-themed hotel on the theme park’s doorstep, with elevators designed as time-travelling machines and a time-travel concierge. parkfront-hotel.com/english

Situated in the southwest, Costa Navarino is a premier travel destination with a rich history as old as Greece itself, home to breath-taking landscapes and sea turtles who lay their eggs on golden-sand beaches. Most importantly – it’s perfect for kids. Voted one of the world’s best family hotels 2018, The Westin Resort has everything you could ever want. From sea-view balconies and pools with swim-up bars, to golf courses and activity clubs for the kids, none of your family can get bored here. Send the young ones off to play sports while you sit relaxing with a drink in hand, or take the whole group on a beach day-out. HOLIDAYS IN BRITAIN: As we all know, holidaying abroad is going to become much more challenging after Brexit. But that doesn’t mean you have to abandon all plans of a beautiful summer trip and stay at home. Instead, you can experience some of the wonderful destinations our own nation has to offer, and fall in love with places that you’d previously overlooked.
Norfolk If you aren’t leaving the country, why not go full British and visit Norfolk. With a charming countryside, towns packed with heritage, and the Queen’s Sandringham Estate – things don’t get more quintessentially British. The perfect place to experience all of this is King’s Lynn. There’s a bit of everything, from maritime exhibitions and historic buildings, to a vibrant town and full-of-life shopping centre. To top it all off, the Dukes Head Hotel overlooks the marketplace in the heart of the town. Designed with Georgian-inspired décor, and close to castles and Sandringham’s grounds, it doesn’t get more British than this. dukesheadhotel.com
The Scottish Highlands Rather than struggle through a long, tiring flight, travel up to the Scottish Highlands. Deemed to be Britain’s own wilderness, the Highlands has everything that non-British destinations offer. Wander under Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, visit castles with rich histories, gaze at dolphins from a boat on the Moray Firth and even meet the iconic Nessie – the monster that lives in Loch Ness. All that without the hassle of going abroad, what’s not to love?
Pembrokeshire, Wales With miles upon miles of scenic coastal paths, a medieval castle and glorious beaches, you may feel like you’re abroad in Pembrokeshire. Well-loved for its stunning views and coastlines, you won’t run out of things to do any time soon. To take your trip to the next level, treat yourself to a stay in a cosy, coastal cottage, and get the all-star treatment with a hamper on arrival, filled with Welsh whiskey and local delicacies, and a private yoga class to really get relaxed. www.coastalcottages.co.uk

If it’s a birthday or a treat, we are always happy to help because gifts for children need to be a pleasure to buy, and a pleasure to give.
The Sweater Always a staple in our wardrobes but we love to add a spring mood with bolts of vibrant colour. Go solid neon pink with a Designers Remix pointelle version or sporty with a wide block stripe knit from Repeat. Looking for something more fitted? Jumper 1234 deliver with a definite nod to the 60s. Add the jeans, distressed hems on washed blue denim (Citizens of Humanity do it well) are a must have this season.
The Top Subtle or bold, the choice is yours. Joseph go full-on flower power in this silk shirt or Ganni offer a more boho twist with a cobalt blue top. Both dress up or down, add jeans or chic black trousers to complete the look.
The Dress Florals were a strong catwalk presence and the combination with bold colour not only covers off two key trends in one piece but is the perfect solution for any occasion. Peter Pilotto as always, delivers in a fab fit and flare style. Alice McCall offers a stunning shift with a retro twist or a more fluid off the shoulder version. Add sharp heels and a cute bag.
The Final Layer Still too early to discard that extra layer and this beautiful chalk blue luxe coat from Theory adds style and warmth. Need something less outdoorsy, the Joseph tux style jacket wears over a more formal outfit or dress but also look fantastic with jeans and a tee top. Memory maker THE RING – A SYMBOL OF LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP. BY INDIA MAHON. he ring is a powerfully evocative piece of jewellery, traditionally worn as a symbol of love, fidelity or simple friendship since the days of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Just like us, the Romans wore their wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand. Roman rings were mostly metal bands and certainly never had diamonds in them. They were often made of iron to symbolise strength. As well as exchanging betrothal rings between couples, Roman men exchanged “pledge” rings with friends and allies as a pledge of fidelity and brotherhood. Throughout the Renaissance love and friendship ring designs became more elaborate and innovative, with Royal love and marriage rings being much copied

by the movers and shakers of the time. Love motifs included turtle doves, clasped hands, hearts and forget-me-not flowers. The aristocracy immortalised their dogs on love rings because of their loyalty. The 19th century was arguably the most romantic and innovative era for rings; motifs included delicate flowers, hearts, serpents, enamelling, carved gemstones and diamonds. New styles emerged, including overlapping bands and clusters of gemstones and diamonds, with secret messages engraved into the ring. The 20th century brought unprecedented diversity in jewellery design. Many jewellers rejected industrial scale jewellery manufacturing, favouring the methods and design principles of the renaissance. The jewellers of the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts movements shared a determination to value jewellery
artistry above the weight of the gemstones and precious metals, creating exotic combinations of colour in a single ring. Today, I work with clients to design rings that symbolise something unique to them. Whether that is an engagement, marriage or a special occasion in their lives. Modern and ethical mining methods mean we have an exciting array of coloured sustainable gemstones to choose from in bold virtuoso cuts and shapes. From the divine emerald, the stone of long-lasting love; the ruby, the stone of love and passion; sapphire in rainbow colours believed to symbolise wisdom, virtue and good fortune; aquamarine symbolises eternal youth and happiness; tourmaline favoured for heart and health, offering a fabulous array of colours; the modern diamond, in its many shades and cuts.
If you are looking for a ring for someone special, don’t be embarrassed to ask even the most basic questions about jewellery to acquire knowledge and confidence about this exciting world. Learn about your stones and metals, how and where they come from, especially when it comes to buying investment pieces like an engagement ring or jewellery to mark an anniversary or a memory in your life. Take time, don’t be rushed, spend your money on the ring you want. Remember you should buy from the jeweller don’t let them sell to you. Cricketers Michael Vaughan (left) and Michael Lumb who both underwent FUE transplants with MHR Clinic
Ahead of the game AFTER SUFFERING A CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE, FORMER ENGLAND CRICKET CAPTAIN MICHAEL VAUGHAN WAS BOWLED OVER BY THE TREATMENT HE RECEIVED AT THE MHR CLINIC. nyone who saw Michael Vaughan OBE in his sporting prime, captaining England and Yorkshire at cricket, would find it hard to believe that he ever suffered from a crisis of confidence. Likewise, the way he stepped seamlessly from sporting retirement into a new career as a hugely respected cricket broadcaster, journalist and member of the BBC’s Test Match Special team, you might think that here was a man who had found the happy knack of rising to every challenge with barely a care in the world. But the popular Sheffield-born sporting hero now admits that when he faced a situation many young men will

recognise – hair loss – he felt his confidence ebb away. Rather than shun the spotlight – or hide beneath a hat – he realised the key to recapturing the poise and personality he exuded as a top sportsman lay in hair restoration, and contacted MHR Clinic. Now a partner in the business after seeing the results of his FUE (follicular unit extraction) surgery, he reveals the difference in his demeanour has been like “night and day”. Vaughan reached the pinnacle of his sport when, as captain of his country, he led the England cricket team to victory in the 2005 Ashes series – and brought the coveted trophy back to Britain for the first time in 18 years.
His skilled performances and assured leadership saw the sublimely talented batsman awarded an OBE in the following New Year Honours list and given the freedom of his home city of Sheffield. But off the field, as he lost his hair, that confidence gradually abandoned him and began to affect areas of his life. The national hero, who also scored 633 runs including three centuries during the 2002/2003 Ashes series, realised if he was to regain his personal prowess he had to do something about his hair loss. Recalling the decision to seek help from MHR Clinic he said: “The reason I decided to go for the hair implants was pretty simple. As a

sportsman I know how important confidence is and my thinning hair was a concern. “The hair on top of my head was starting to thin and fall out. The front was starting to wither away. And I could feel I had less confidence for it. “I’d seen my old man’s hair loss for many years and I didn’t want his look. I like him, but not how his hair looks, so I decided to do something about it.” Having met MHR Clinic’s CEO Craig Henton at a social event the previous year and been impressed by his knowledge of hair loss, he got in touch through a mutual friend and booked his first appointment. Michael said: “MHR Clinic is the most advanced in its field and its confidential assessment and consultation process took away the stress I felt about undergoing surgery. “I went for my consultation with Craig and he examined my hair, or lack of it should I say. And then he talked me through the different procedures available. “I opted for an FUE hair transplant after a period of prescription and herbal medication in conjunction with medicated shampoos and lotions. And I went for regular laser therapy sessions
until a week or two before the FUE surgery. “Once I was ready for the surgery I flew to Dublin and put myself in the skilled hands of Ioannis, MHR’s top surgeon,” Michael recalled. “I was amazed by how quick and simple the procedure actually was. I got myself on the treatment table and before I knew it I was back in Cheshire under the laser light again. “The hair started to grow back very nicely within weeks of my FUE, and it kept improving over the following months, until I had a full head of hair again. And the difference in my hair within 12 months was like night and day. “I went from severely thinning to having a scalp that was fully covered in hair.” But the results Michael saw were not just restricted to his hair. He explained: “After undergoing my transplant and its supporting treatments I regained confidence to simply get on with life. It has been a huge success for me and has made me feel on top of my game again.” And he added: “A few of my former teammates picked up on the transformation in my hair and also in my confidence, and they’ve now had the same level of results through their different treatments at MHR Clinic.” MHR Clinic Harrogate Harewood Estate, Leeds, LS17 9LF MHR Clinic Manchester 2 Cherry Tree Farm, Cherry Tree Lane Rostherne, Knutsford, WA14 3RZ
Michael Vaughan isn’t the only well-known figure to ‘come clean’ about his hair loss. Along with Wales football manager and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs OBE, he was so impressed with the results from MHR Clinic he invested in the company. Other celebrities who have had their lives transformed by successful treatments at MHR Clinic include football referee Mark Clattenburg, cricketer Michael Lumb and actor Adam Rickitt. MHR Clinic’s specialists have more than 40 years of combined clinical experience and expertise, and offer bespoke hair renewal programmes/with measured amounts of prescribed medication, herbal lotions and low level laser therapy. pringfield Healthcare is quickly becoming one of Yorkshire’s most well-known and respected care providers. Founder and group CEO, Graeme Lee, spent his younger years helping his parents in their Garforth care home, and his memories of this time have helped shape the way he runs Springfield Healthcare today. “I used to do breakfast on a Saturday and Sunday morning so my mum could have a lie in,” Graeme tells us, “I loved doing that. I remember how fascinating older people are if you take the time to listen and talk to them. They’ve got amazing stories to tell. “I could see how vulnerable older people were, but I could see that if there were better facilities it would be easier to care for them.” Despite working at his parents’ care home throughout his younger years, he hasn’t always stayed in the sector. It wasn’t until his mother’s sudden passing in February 1994 that he returned to the business, and since his return, he’s never looked back. “I was previously a senior manager with Marks & Spencer, but my dad retired overnight when my mum died suddenly, so I came in to run the business. “I couldn’t think of doing anything different. “I started the domiciliary arm of Springfield in 1998, and the actual Springfield Healthcare Group in 2012. “The building that we had back in the seventies was old fashioned. It didn’t have en-suite bathrooms. It needed modernising and I really saw an opportunity in the sector. “I love creating new environments to stimulate older people. I’m the person that finds all the sites, and I’m very involved with the building of each care facility to make sure it’s market leading.” About to start work on their eighth care home, Springfield Healthcare don’t just want to take the cut and paste approach to their care homes, and instead are focused on making sure improvements are made every step of the way. “We’re learning as we go,” says Graeme. “Every home has something extra in it. We look at each home as being unique to that environment, and we want each home to be in the heart of the community. “It’s not about being the biggest, it’s about being the best.” Graeme is very much hands-on when it

I have over 1,300 staff in my group and they’re all very passionate, caring people and they work really hard at going the extra mile and making a difference in people’s lives,
whether it be in their own homes or our care homes.” Celebrating the work of their staff members, Springfield Healthcare have their own annual awards ceremony, the SARAs – staff annual recognition awards. “It’s a very special night, these events make you very proud when you see so many talented and caring people. “We’re always recruiting because we’re growing. Hot stuff WE SATISFY OUR SPICY CRAVINGS WITH A VISIT TO HARROGATE’S SUKHOTHAI. eing the heat and spice freak I am, I just love to try new dining experiences that combine the two. However, the choice of authentic Thai food is vast and given a choice of an evening spent, and of course hard cash, with Sukhothai or somewhere new, I’m both happy and sad to say, Sukhothai wins hands down. It’s like betting on the favourite each way at the races, you’re just not going to be disappointed. Of course the element of surprise is always a good emotion, but as the menu is so vast, it could take a good while to munch, and in my case, sip your way through it. And so we were off to Harrogate, Cheltenham Parade to be exact, right on the corner. It’s stood there for more years than I care to remember, superbly placed for visitors from the International Centre, just across the road. Greeted by Manny, the manager, and his stunning staff, we felt special and as I looked at other diners arriving, all were shown the same meticulous courtesy adding to the ambiance of the evening. A good start. The entrees quickly arrived and, I’m pleased to say, they didn’t take away the superb prawn crackers. We started with Poh Taek soup (£8.50), three chillies strength, and my utterly all time favourite. Or so I thought (more about that in the next starter). It was a hot and sour mixed seafood soup with fresh Thai herbs, and boy, the liquid was spicy hot but the subtle blends of seafood balanced the dish perfectly. Not a spoonful was left. Mueg Sukhothai (£7.25) – squid in light batter dusted with a Tom Yum seasoning and served with a spicy Sriracha sauce – was placed opposite me and I suddenly became envious of my companion’s choice. Happily he was generous with his, ‘would you like to try some?’ It was beautiful and perfectly cooked and my next visit will definitely include this. The portion was plenty and would certainly satisfy anyone who wanted to

substitute their main meal with a large starter – throw in a portion of noodles and it’s more than ample. For mains, Pad Prik Gang (£13.95) had another three chilli rating, although I have to say, I wouldn’t have noticed; if you like hot food like me, I would recommend asking for more heat. Pad Prik Gang is spicy stir-fry king prawns with a fiery red curry paste, green beans, mushroom, red pepper, carrot and lime leaves. It was everything it described and was as tasty as you can imagine. The king prawns were large and meaty and plentiful, again, if you wanted to pick and mix between two mains ordered, the portion was large enough. My companion, not as adventurous as me, opted for a very smooth Gang Panaeng (£10.95), a traditional Thai red curry with chicken, made with coconut milk, red and green peppers, carrot, sweet basil, and bamboo shoots. It had a one chilli rating that would bore the socks off me, but by the look on his face whilst tucking in, he was in heaven. A mix of noodles and Jasmine rice completed the meal both traditionally and perfectly. It goes without saying, as with all four of the Sukhothai restaurants, service was up there with any five-star restaurant; it was quick, although I noticed a couple of diners opposite us slowed their meal right down so they could enjoy their dinning experience at their own pace. The staff didn’t let head chef of the group and owner Ban Kaewkraikhot down. Beautiful. Sukhothai 17-19 Cheltenham Parade Harrogate, HG1 1DD Tel: 01423 500869 sukhothai.co.uk

The average British family spends around £5,000 a year on holidays, and when you take the time to look at what we’ve got right here on our doorstep, it’ll make you wonder why you’ve spent so many hours of your life on planes, trains and automobiles in an attempt to leave it behind. There are plenty of cities, towns and villages right here in the UK that make perfect holiday destinations, whether you’re looking to get away for a week or just a weekend. of calm hits you as you head down the winding country roads into Felixkirk. As we arrived on a winter evening long after the sun had set, we couldn’t fully appreciate the village’s idyllic charm until we awoke the following morning after possibly the most comfortable night’s sleep of the year. After being shown to our room by The Carpenter’s Arms’ wonderful manager Paulo, we struggled not to put head to pillow straight away, and it was only the thought of our dinner reservation that kept us away from the Egyptian cotton sheets and duck down duvets for the next few hours. Staying in one of the hotel’s eight garden rooms, we walked through the door to the warmth and crackle of an already lit fireplace, and Paulo left us with the reassurance that anything we needed was just a phone call away. After cleaning up for dinner in the room’s large en-suite bathroom, we headed up to the restaurant with empty stomachs and high hopes. As part of the multi-award winning Provenance Inns & Hotels group, The Carpenter’s Arms take food and drink seriously, and their menu featuring a wide range of fresh local produce really highlighted this. Each course packed a punch, and there wasn’t a single dish that wasn’t complemented by the bottle of La Brouette Rouge Celliers Jean d’Alibert (£17.95) we shared. Both my starter of Parma ham and cherry mozzarella, rocket, olive and sun blushed tomato salad (£7.95) and my partner’s baked queenie scallops with garlic and parsley butter and a cheddar and gruyere crust (£9.95) were
presented beautifully. Fresh and bursting with flavour, we couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off the evening. Having opted for light starters, we decided, just as we all do when on holiday, to indulge a little and make the most of our time away. The specials board was calling my name, the Gressingham duck perfectly tender and pink in the middle, served with dauphinoise potatoes that were creamy and crisp and contrasted well with the fresh buttered greens and cherry and red wine jus (£16.95). My partner was feeling carnivorous too, and his 8oz Grand Reserve sirloin steak (£19.95) didn’t last too long on the plate. Served rare with the perfect amount of char giving it an extra flavour boost, his steak came with chunky chips, onion rings, mushroom, confit tomato and rocket salad. We left the restaurant with the atmosphere still buzzing, and as we headed to bed after a long day, I could think of nothing but the sticky toffee pudding (£5.95) I’d had for dessert. Butterscotch sauce and cinder toffee ice cream gave this after dinner treat a real edge, while my partner still maintains that his dessert of winter berry crumble and vanilla custard (£5.95) was superior. the food remained consistent, and it was just the fuel we needed before putting on our best walking shoes and exploring the local area. With plenty of public footpaths and bridleways surrounding Felixkirk, it wasn’t difficult to find our way around, and when we did lose our way slightly we found friendly faces happy to help us get back on track. After spending our day taking in the cold winter air, we wondered why we had never really considered a UK mini break. At the far end, you will pass a house on the corner where the road bends to the right. Shortly afterwards, cross the road to enter the wood around Swinsty Reservoir, via the gap in the wall, opposite a set of steps. 4. Either turn left to follow the zig-zag route through the woods, or right turn to take the shorter path around the edge of the wood, which meets the end of the zig-zag path (the shorter path, however, is relatively steep). 5. Follow the path around the perimeter of the reservoir, where there are seats at intervals with excellent views across the water. After about one kilometre, you will pass Stack Point car park and picnic area, and meet the public road that crosses an inlet of the reservoir. 6. Turn right on the road (there is no pavement so caution is necessary) and when you get to the other side of the inlet, turn right through the gap in the wall, next to a gate, back into the grounds of Swinsty Reservoir. 7. Continue your journey around the edge of the reservoir to meet a tarmac access road. 8. Turn right on the road, past a house on the left. Cross Swinsty Reservoir Embankment using the level path on the left-hand side of the road. Here, there are gorgeous views down the valley and across Swinsty Reservoir. 9. At the end of the embankment, turn right up the lane and pass Swinsty Hall on the left. Here, either turn left following the (quite steep) path through the woods back to the car park, or continue along the lane to the car park’s main entrance. 68 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
Ramsgill The Pub: Yorke Arms https://www.theyorkearms.co.uk/ Situated in the heart of the stunning Nidderdale Valley, this Michelin-starred restaurant is a must for those who have worked up an appetite after a long, country walk. Head-chef Frances Atkins is one of only six female Michelin-starred chefs in the UK, with a creative menu that attracts visitors from all over the country. Choose from five or eight-course Yorkshireinspired tasting menus for a real, post-exercise treat. The Walk: With incredible views of the moor and pasture, this walk covers part of the well-loved Nidderdale Way. Taking approximately four hours, at seven-and-a-half miles, this circular walk is best completed in the morning before a well-earned lunch. *** Start: any car park as near to the Yorke Arms as possible. 1. Head along the through-road, and to the side of the building, to find a small green with benches to your left. 2. To the rear of this you’ll find the yellow Nidderdale Way marker pointing a route along a path lined with trees, beside the River Nidd, to your right, and with a sheep field to your left. You’ll follow this clear, well-marked route for the entirety of the walk. 3. Go on a gentle climb to West House Farm (roughly 35 minutes). Take note of the tree-line across the valley, to your right, as this will mark the closing part of the walk. 4. Follow the trail through Studfold Farm and across bright green country. Eventually, after a ramshackle farmer’s barn, the road takes an abrupt downward curve towards a children’s activity area, with a bit of not-unpleasant road walking. 5. Soon, you’ll pass famous How Stean, a plunging limestone gorge. Keep to the road and cross the bridge over the river, then head up a field towards Lofthouse (around 15 minutes from the gorge). 6. Then, go further on to Middlesmoor. Head to the hilltop church and take in a spectacular panorama of the breathtaking Nidderdale below. While you’re here, take a peek inside the Church of St. Chad’s to view a historic treasure – the ancient cross of St Chad from AD 665. 7. Before long (roughly 30 minutes), you’ll be brushing against the line of trees you previously saw from the other side of the valley. The path takes a couple of remaining ups-and-downs, before emerging full circle at the back of The Yorke Arms.

1. Summer flowering bulbs will be arriving at your garden centre, look for the new varieties and store cool but frost free when you get them home until it is time to plant. Dahlias have made a great comeback over the last two years and for a cutting garden you couldn’t ask for a better plant to deliver bloom after bloom. 2. In the shed get all your tools cleaned with Jeyes fluid or Citrox disinfectant and get things sharpened for the coming season.Wet weather jobs in the shed still need doing however tempting an afternoon on the sofa with a cup of coffee is! 3. Remember if pruning out old or diseased stems on dormant plants to disinfect the blades of your secateurs after each plant to stop cross contamination. 4. Don’t be tempted to prune back ornamental grasses as these are often havens for overwintering beneficial insects and seed heads for finches. 5. Wisteria side-shoots can be cut back this time of year to encourage more flowers in the spring, cut back to about 4” or three buds from the main stems. 6. Any stored lifted bulbs or corms such as Dahlia or Gladioli should be checked for rotting and any diseased ones removed, sulphur dust will keep such problems in check. 7. For wildlife, keep an area of your pond ice free to allow any build up a gas from decaying vegetation to escape and allow oxygen exchange, this will also supply a much needed source of drinking water for all wildlife. 8. Bird feeders need to be kept topped up though this really cold period. Choose feeds high in calories such as sunflower hearts or ’no mess’ options such as bird feeder fat balls. The RHS have just been helping launch a new birdfeed range to highlight these types of feeds. 9. Late winter and early spring are windy months, make sure everything is securely staked or tied to supports that need it 10. Keep a close eye on emerging shoots and if a real cold snap is forecast have fleece or mulch available to cover tender shoots 11. In the dark evenings plan a new planting scheme for your pots and containers, purples and greys are this years fashion colours if you want to be on trend. For a bit of zing add some burnt orange! 12. Make a plan for the next couple of months of all the jobs you need to do so that you can adjust your tasks according to the prevailing weather conditions. There are some great garden journals available for this purpose. RHS Garden Harlow Carr, Crag Lane, Harrogate, HG3 1QB Tel: 01423 565418 www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/harlow-carr

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? MAVEER SINGH-PANGU PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF LAST YEAR. EXCITING TIMES ARE AHEAD... ew year, new me? Actually no. After an amazing Christmas break, I was glad to get back into action and more because January was everything but dry for me! PG Promotions had so many incredible foodie deals on with some of my favourite restaurants, and so I took it upon myself to try each and every one of them (for Wharfedale Grange research purposes of course darling). In fact, I’d be here all day if I was to run through all the tasty food I’ve feasted on during the past few weeks. I really have eaten like a king, but Stockdale’s Wagyu Burger and Issho’s Chiisai four-course tasting menu were two personal highlights that I urge you to try. But it hasn’t all been food, drink and debauchery. To balance things out, I paid Nurse Rachel a visit at L1 Performance for a vitamin IV drip and vitamin b12 injection. I left her clinic with glowing skin, a spring in my step and feeling energised enough to get back to business. One new project I’ve been dying to share with everyone is our new ladies networking event. Hosted by yours truly, this will be a regular event that gives inspirational women a chance to meet up and share their experiences in business. It’s going to be called Pink Ladies (what else?), and will launch on 7 March 123pm at Issho in celebration of International Women’s Day on the With Nurse Rachel eighth. Do get in touch if you’d like to

Yard & Coop is set to be a welcome addition to the city
join us, it’s going to be a blast! Down at Pink Gorilla towers, things are busier than ever and when I boldly say that 2019 is going to be our best year yet, I mean it. The Leeds Northern Quarter is raising its game even further this year, and we are working with two incredible clients who are really going to make waves in this fabulous city. First, we have Yard & Coop launching just opposite Zaap Thai at the bottom of Merrion Street. They have been serving up their super tasty buttermilk chicken to the people of Manchester and Liverpool for a few years now, and now
Leeds is about to be blessed with their presence. They get their chicken from farm to fork within 48 hours, and their secret 13-spice recipe is something the Colonel can only dream of. Put it this way, I’m done with Nando’s now! Just across the street from them, the site formerly known as The Pit has been transformed into LOOP. Brought to you by the team behind Roxy’s Ball Room, this karaoke cocktail bar boasts six private rooms (for up to 30 people), arcade machines, and private hire for larger parties. LOOP will be the place to be for unashamed weekend fun, party tunes, beer and prosecco pong and premium craft beer and cocktails galore. Launches for these exciting new venues with be coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled. Another January highlight for me was a private event we organised for a
client’s 21st birthday at Wharf-edale Grange. The venue itself is absolutely stunning to begin with and is popular with weddings, but you should have seen the place once myself and Deborah had finished with it. The interiors couldn’t have been more opulent, and the outdoor lighting was so intense, you could have spotted it from the moon! Speaking of soirees, I’m hosting another Pangu Parties event at Oracle Bar and Nightclub, and you’re invited! It’s called Playtime, and it’s going to be the perfect opportunity for all my wellbehaved friends who’ve gone alcoholfree or vegan (or both in some cases!) to let their hair down and be bad again! It’s taking place on Saturday 9 February and it’s going to be amazing, so do get in touch if you’d like to be on the guestlist. If there’s one thing I love doing, it’s corrupting people and helping them to fall off the wagon in style! Ciao for now, I hope to see you soon. Mav x PS.
