KIND AND COMPASSIONATE RESIDENTIAL, NURSING AND DEMENTIA CARE

in the Heart of Ilkley

any of us will know a very special couple... perhaps our own M parents, grandparents or some close friends or neighbours... But what happens when one of them requires more care than the other is able to give? Dressing, bathing, monitoring medication, new and difficult behaviours... life can become very challenging and very stressful. Making the decision to move into residential care is never simple or easy. Finding residential care within easy travelling distance? Visiting hours? Eating together? Fulfilling promises made to care for each other in sickness and in health can often lead to a deterioration in physical and mental health for the caring partner in the relationship. At Mayfield View Care Home we can help. We can offer round the clock care to couples or companions giving reassurance to you and your loved ones that help is always at hand. That you are safe and well cared for physically and emotionally. Our support on a practical level can be relatively straightforward residential care or more complex nursing or dementia needs and,

importantly, we can support you to live as full and as independent a life as possible. Living in a care home doesn’t have to mean you both need professional care, although we can cater for that, but it does mean that care is available 24 hours a day to support you both in a way that is tailored to your needs. A number of our rooms at Mayfield View Care Home can accommodate a loved one or companion alongside those requiring care. We can look after you both so that you have the time to enjoy each other’s company, take part in as many of the daily activities on offer as you would like and to live life without all of the stresses and strains. We’re on hand 24/7 to help and support.

Black Water

The Bear

THEATRE Black Waters 12-15 February / Leeds Playhouse leedsplayhouse.org.uk Phoenix Dance Theatre’s powerful new performance celebrates hope and freedom in a show fusing contemporary dance and classical kathak Indian dance. Historical events inspire this emotionally evocative production, exploring the long-lasting effects of British colonial forces.

The Bear 18-22 February / Leeds Playhouse leedsplayhouse.org.uk Ever wondered what it would be like to

sit on a polar bear’s lap? Or ride on its back? Have you ever tried to give a polar bear a bath, or clear up its poo? One night when she’s fast asleep, Tilly is visited by an enormous bear. It has a big black tongue and a yawn as big as your head. But Tilly’s not scared. The story of a little girl who befriends a mischievous polar bear, this playful, funny and heart-warming tale is one of imagination and growing up.

Standard: Elite 12 March Richard Whiteley Theatre, Giggleswick School www.giggleswick.org.uk/rwt Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe, awardwinning company Hidden Track brings its playful, interactive theatre experience

OPERA Opera North Season Various dates / Leeds Grand Theatre / www.operanorth.co.uk ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ kick-starts Opera North’s 2020 season and runs at the Grand until 21 March. Mozart’s joyous farce of mistaken identity and misunderstanding, heartache and forgiveness, is bursting at the seams with invention and wit in this hit production. The sublime music bubbles along with comic high spirits, conveying all the delight and pain of love, and the agony and ecstasy of desire. This is succeeded by ‘The Turn of the Screw’, which runs until 15 March. Based on the ghost story by Henry James, this edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller reaches new levels of terror and claustrophobia in this spine-chilling production. The disturbingly beautiful music by Benjamin Britten ratchets the tension up to breaking point.

FILM Birds of Prey 7 February Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn in this DC Comics outing which sees her joining forces with superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord played by Ewan McGregor.

THE DIARY

INTERVIEW

Whirlwind start FROM STRICTLY LIVE TO CONVERSATIONS WITH..., STACEY DOOLEY HAS A BUSY BEGINNING TO 2020. HOW SHE FOUND TIME TO TALK TO NORTHSIDE IS ANYONE’S GUESS. resh from appearing onstage at the First Direct Arena as part of the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour, documentary filmmaker, author and TV presenter Stacey Dooley will be returning to the city on 11 February for the second date of her ten-date UK tour. Stacey has become the voice of a generation, firmly establishing herself as one of the BBC’s most celebrated broadcasters through her hugely popular investigative documentary series, covering a diverse range of topics from across the world; from arms dealers in the USA to Nigeria’s female suicide bombers. Conversations with Stacey Dooley will see her share tales from these remarkable experiences, discuss the challenges of journalism in a constantly shifting media landscape and, of course, that glitter ball win in 2018. We caught up with the multi-talented Stacey to find out more.

documentaries have come back into fashion, certainly over the past few years, everyone has a growing obsession with Louis Theroux. I think we are very curious, there is this insatiable appetite for information. And we are in a position now where we can find out what’s going on around the world. It’s very immediate, so I feel really lucky to be a part of that scene and documentaries always rate brilliantly and they always do really well. What would you say has been your career highlight to date?

Oh wow! I’ve made loads of films, but you’re proud of different films for different reasons. The films we made concerning the Yazidi community in Iraq are some of the ones perhaps I’m most proud of. Having said that, we have just made a really compelling documentary – I think it will be really important – about psychosis and mental health more broadly in South London, so much closer to home. I’m really proud of that.

Do you think the world of documentary film making has changed much since you started out your career?

What is your fondest memory of Strictly Come Dancing?

Yes, I suspect it probably has. I think

I shouldn’t say winning, should I?

Because that’s too showy. Kev and I loved the Paso. I was never going to be the best dancer; I was against a Pussycat Doll (Ashley Roberts) and a girl from Steps (Faye Tozer) – both amazing dancers. So, it was just about us taking ownership of our own journey. The Paso was when I felt really proud actually of what we were able to achieve. It felt like a real story, there was narrative there and it was storytelling in a different way. I loved the Paso so much it was brilliant. Also, learning how to dance from one of the best dancers in the country was a real treat; it was amazing, the best time! What else will you be working on before the tour starts?

It’s non-stop. I’m doing Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star at the minute which is a make-up show, and then when I finish that I’m going off to do a documentary on spy cameras, and then I’m going to a few places where we will be looking at new drug routes. THE DIARY

INTERVIEW

Lots to talk about AFTER CARVING OUT A SUCCESSFUL TV CAREER, IRISH COMIC ARDAL O’HANLON HAS RETURNED TO THE STAGE. HE ARRIVES IN HARROGATE IN MARCH FOR LOTS OF SHOWING OFF. dmitting that he was happily sliding into middle-age, fairly sure he knew all that he needed to know about the world, Ardal O’Hanlon has been jolted out of that complacency by recent world events. The good news is that this has meant the Irish stand-up, writer, and star of such TV hits as Father Ted and Death In Paradise has felt compelled to write a new stand-up set, The Showing Off Must Go On, which arrives at Harrogate Theatre on 5 March. “There’s an awful lot to talk about,” Ardal admits. “Especially in the last two or three years, the world has changed dramatically. There are lots of new things to deal with. I thought I’d cracked everything and then suddenly you have to completely re-engage with the world as it shifts. There are always things to say, but at the moment there’s a kind of urgency. I think as you get older you have to be true to yourself. For me, it’s more about material rather than just gags; it’s about expressing yourself and it has to be based on real feelings and emotions. I hope it still has the silly and surreal qualities that I always brought to

A

stand-up but it has to be based on something.” Inevitably, the likes of Trump and Brexit will raise their less than pleasant heads, though in Ardal’s hands, the treatment of the work will be typically off-kilter. “I think it’s incumbent upon a comedian to find clever and imaginative ways to come up with stuff. I personally prefer watching comedians who aren’t too blunt or too partisan, so while I have strong political views, I don’t want to hit an audience over the head with them. Comedians have to be cannier than that. I’m not going to mention Trump or Brexit by name, but I hope to be able to do stuff on them while trying to keep it a bit light and user friendly. What seems clear about these events is that feelings will always trump facts in making decisions. All the decisions we make in life are irrational: our consumer choices are irrational, our choice of life partner might be irrational. You could end up marrying the craziest person in the world. ‘They might stab you.’ ‘Yes, but they have lovely hair!” As well as displaying his talent for a decent pun, the title of Ardal’s touring

show reflects the part of his personality that he’s had to draw upon to get on in the entertainment world, despite his upbringing doing everything it could to dampen that spirit. “I’m a very reluctant show-off,” he says of The Showing Off Must Go On. “I come from a part of the world where showing off is anathema; it’s the worst thing you could possibly do. When you grow up in a border area of Ireland, people are very wary and cagy and keep their head down at all times. Don’t speak unless it’s absolutely essential, and don’t give anything away. So showing off was a really terrible thing to do; it’s up there with armed robbery.” This left Ardal feeling somewhat conflicted. “I love stand-up comedy and I love performing, but I was always conscious that this is showing off and I’m slightly uncomfortable about that. I suppose the question I ask myself almost every day is ‘why do I do this?’ And as I get older, ‘why do I still do this?’ I suppose to some extent this is what I’m addressing in the show.” For ticket information visit www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk

The Marriage of Figaro

1-29 February You can see one of Mozart’s finest operas in Leeds this year as the Marriage of Figaro returns to the Grand Theatre. It’s a joyous farce that tells the story of mistaken identity, heartache and forgiveness. Trouble looms on Figaro’s wedding day – his master, Count Almaviva wants to bed his fiancé Susanna, the heartbroken Countess becomes the object of Cherubino’s desires and if Figaro can’t repay a debt to housekeeper Marcellina, he’ll have to marry her instead. Hilarious chaos ensues to an absolutely unforgettable score. Dark Skies Festival

14 February-1 March National Parks remain some of the darkest places in Great Britain and Dark Skies Festival is all about discovering, learning and enjoying what you can see and do as a result. This could mean getting out for an activity such as cycling, walking, running or caving at night, attending a stargazing party, learning more about star constellations or building a rocket. There are events for families, first-time stargazers and those wishing to expand their knowledge or astrophotography skills further. Since 2016’s inaugural event, the festival has become an unmissable fixture in the astronomy calendar, with the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authorities celebrating the jewels of the night sky. With over 100 events, join a nebula adventure and explore the cosmos for the fifth Dark Skies Festival.

Planet Ice

Early 2020 Okay, we might’ve said this last year, but now, honestly, it’s finally coming. After seven years of construction and one big storm that blew it all down, the new ice rink on Elland Road will open early 2020. Planet Ice will have room for 1,800 skaters, so get ready to don a pair of blades and circle their enormous ice rink. Skating classes will be offered, and you can even try your hand at ice hockey or ice dancing. When you’re done, head to the bar or grab a bite to eat in the on-site restaurant.

5

Early 2020 If you’re a big fan of The Great British Bake Off, you’re going to love the latest addition to St Paul’s Street in Leeds. Ready, Steady, Bake is a competitive baking experience designed to pit you against your mates in a delicious contest that will put your cooking skills to the test. You’ll get your very own baking station as you compete against one another to create sweet and savoury baked goods. Who will be crowned king of the cookie? It’s time to find out.

30 April-3 May Both routes will be the toughest in the history of the race and feature more climbing than ever before, including the Côtes de Buttertubs and Grinton Moor – both making their first appearances since the 2014 Tour de France – and the return of the infamous Shibden Wall. The sixth edition of the men’s race will take place between 30 April-3 May and form part of the inaugural UCI ProSeries. Its new 2. Pro classification remains the highest-possible status for a multi-day race outside of the UCI WorldTour. It encompasses all four corners of the county and takes in 160 villages, towns and cities along the way. The Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race meanwhile, runs between 1-2 May and will once again offer equal prize money to the men, making it one of the most lucrative races in the sport. Summer 2020 Leeds Studios is a major new film and TV studio complex that’s opening in the former Polestar Petty warehouses on Whitehall Road. The new studio represents a £1.6million investment in the local film and TV industry, proving that Channel 4’s arrival has already given the media business a massive boost. They’re currently building six state-of-the-art facilities across 70,000 square feet and plan to more than double the number of studios currently open across the city. 26 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Leeds Pride

26-28 June This three-day floral extravaganza is a great day out, packed with specialist nurseries and trade stands, gorgeous floral displays, expert advice, talks and demonstrations, tempting food, music and more – all in the beautiful surroundings of RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Gardening legend Alan Titchmarsh opened last year’s show to mark 70 years of the North Yorkshire garden and said: “Harlow Carr has been special to me since the 1960s when I first visited it as a gardening apprentice from Ilkley. It has always occupied a special place in my heart as a glorious garden close to where I was born and grew up. I was thrilled to be back and share a birthday with one of the country’s finest gardens.”

31 July-2 August Expect a rainbow of colours across the first weekend of August to celebrate Leeds Pride. It’s a three-day extravaganza that culminates in the famous Sunday afternoon parade. It starts with live music in Millennium Square, before weaving its way through the city centre and ending at a second stage on Lower Briggate. You can revel in a street party atmosphere in the city’s Freedom Quarter until the early hours.

Leeds International Film Festival

18 October It’s easy to see why the Yorkshire Marathon has been a sell-out every year since its 2013 launch. It’s one of the Britain’s most popular marathons boasting a picturesque course through historic York and the surrounding countryside. Runners can expect helpful marshals, great crowds and an eye-catching medal at the finish. On the same day as the marathon, the Yorkshire 10 Mile also takes place, bringing supporters and runners alike to the city streets.

4-19 November Leeds’ International Film Festival takes over venues across the city every November with a fortnight of big-name flicks, independent releases and the best cult films across all genres. It’s this combination that has made it one of the biggest events of its kind in the UK, attracting over 40,000 people to 300 events every year – and 2020 will be no different.

Headrow Transformation

Light Night

20

Reopening of The Majestic

Autumn 2020 The Headrow is one of the major routes through Leeds city centre and it’s currently getting a £20.7million makeover. By autumn 2020 vital transport upgrades and huge improvements to the public realm will be completed. The central reservation will be removed, cycle lanes will be added, and road layouts will be improved to reduce congestion and increase the reliability of buses. The area will also look better too, as they add everything from new bus shelters to new pedestrian crossings, creating the gateway into the city that Leeds deserves.

October 2020 Over two incredible nights in October some of Leeds’ most recognisable indoor and outdoor spaces are transformed by spectacular artworks and captivating performances by local, national and international artists. Light Night invites people to see the city in a new light and discover over 60 free arts events across the city centre. From large-scale light projections and interactive installations, to music, dance and street performances, there is always something for everyone.

Late 2020 By the end of 2020, The Majestic will reopen but it’ll look a lot different than it used to. After fire gutted the iconic building, the £40million redevelopment by Rushbond has given the Grade II listed landmark a new lease of life. The facade has been restored and they’ve built a seven-storey glass structure, complete with a three-storey atrium within. 65,000 square feet will be dedicated for office space, but the ground floor will be home to a host of food, drink and leisure units the whole city can use. Retro style LOOK TO THE PAST FOR INSPIRATION, SAYS MORGAN CLARE. 020 is well under way but here at Morgan Clare we’re looking ahead to the future with a fond nod to the past. Whilst the new decade is upon us, the key trends for spring are heavily influenced by those gone before. From 80s power dressing to 90s minimalism; this season’s style is all about making the past relevant to today. With this in mind we’ve selected our favourite pieces to help you glide into the New Year effortlessly.

2

The power suit has long been a staple in our wardrobes but suiting gets a refresh this season with exaggerated proportions and feminine touches. This Acne sartorial suit not only screams spring in its pastel hue but its versatility is unlimited. Just wear the blazer with a graphic tee and staple jeans for that perfect weekend look. Add a pair of chic trainers to the full suit for a smart brunch outfit or pair back with heels and a romantic blouse for that dinner date.

*** Of course what would spring be without a fresh take on floral. Colourful and contemporary prints are dominant and you’ll be no wallflower in one of these beautiful styles.

*** Some of our favourite brands at Morgan Clare including Theory and Velvet are right on trend this season, providing that minimal mood of the 90s. Invest in these staple styles which will be your hardest working pieces this season.

*** We’re also going dotty for polka dots this season. Whilst you’re likely to have a polka dot dress already hanging in your wardrobe, this season it’s about mixing it up with new shapes and wearing the dots daily. Try this gorgeous midi skirt from Velvet with a staple white tee and trainers or this polka dot shirt from Essentiel Antwerp for a dressier look. Alternatively go for a dot that’s slightly more contemporary like this easy wrap dress; a spot that’s almost an animal print… who says you can’t have it all this season.

BEAUTY

Winter warning IT’S NO SECRET THAT THE WINTER IS POSSIBLY ONE OF THE WORST SEASONS FOR OUR APPEARANCE. FEBRUARY IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO GET THINGS BACK ON TRACK AND NOURISH OUR SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS WITH SOME SIMPLE BEAUTY RESOLUTIONS.

Hair Our hair can be particularly damaged during winter, but there are easy ways to salvage your shine and bring back the bounce. To avoid breakage, brush your hair starting from the ends and work your way up to the root. Other tips include washing the hair with lukewarm to cool water, as very hot water can have a damaging effect on the hair, similar to using heated tools. When it comes to washing your hair, make sure all products are fully rinsed out to avoid irritating the scalp and use a good conditioner to keep the hair looking and feeling healthy. After washing, do not brush the hair immediately, comb through with your fingers first and then reach for the brush. As hair begins its journey in the body, diet is also crucial and certain foods that affect acne-prone skin can also flare up a problematic scalp. Other foods are very good for your scalp, like Omega 3s found in fatty fish like salmon. NORTHSIDE RECOMMENDS Hair Rituel by Sisley colour perfecting shampoo £54 www.sisley-paris.co.uk For those who love to live in colour, Sisley presents a haircare product designed to counter the disadvantages of highlighted hair, from platinum blondes to fiery reds and deep brunettes, to achieve lightweight, soft and bouncy locks year-round. The star active ingredient, Hibiscus flower extract is rich in anthocyanins (natural pigments) and fruit acids, helping to seal the cuticles of the hair and lock the pigments into the fibre, reviving the shine of strands day after day. Soul and Soap passion fruit solid shampoo bar £5.99 www.soulandsoap.co.uk This plastic free-bar is a powerful and natural zero-waste alternative to bottled shampoo. It will last for months (helping to save our planet and your bank balance) and as they are so small, you can take a shampoo bar with you on your travels, saving you space, and you don‘t have to worry about replacing it for long time. Soul and Soup’s shampoo bar leaves your hair incredibly soft, shiny and free from build-up. They also nourish your hair, so there’s no need to use conditioner. 38 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

BEAUTY

Face During colder months, taking care of our skin should be even more of a priority than in summer, and just a few resolutions will help restore your glow and can reduce puffiness and dryness. Try cleansing as soon as you get home in the evening and you will soon be in a routine, or maybe after dinner perhaps (instead of leaving it until bedtime when you may persuade yourself that you are too tried to take your make up off). Cleanse thoroughly with a product that is effective at clearing makeup and doesn’t strip the healthy lipids from the skin. Cut back on physical exfoliation and opt instead for a chemical exfoliator (which gently remove surface dead skin cells) with ingredients like salicylic and azelaic acids. It might not seem necessary, due to the total lack of sunshine, but if you’re going to make any changes to your skincare routine this year, add an SPF to your routine. UV protection by day. Retinol by night. Two skincare decisions the future you will thank you for. Another beauty resolution to make is to add a facial oil into your evening routine, as applying before bed will allow your skin to absorb all the benefits whist you sleep. NORTHSIDE RECOMMENDS Makeup Melt cleanser by Virginutty £19.95 www.virginutty.co.uk This kind-to-skin natural cosmetic cleanser is made from organic coconut oil. Makeup Melt softens keratin caps in pores and dissolves hardened sebum, preparing your facial skin for cleansing and toning. Use this pure coconut oil balm as part of your daily skincare ritual to melt away makeup, from foundation to waterproof mascara. Massage over the face, being extra gentle on your eyelashes, wipe away excess and follow with a gentle wash. BeautyPro restore and renew set £16 www.beautypro.com With five BeautyPro masks, this set contains all you need for the ultimate at-home facial treatment and contains five products, including a rejuvenating and nourishing sheet mask, detoxifying mask, eye therapy mask and black peel charcoal mask, which work to purify the skin and boost complexion.

Body No one feels like slathering on body lotion after a shower on a cold morning and we find ourselves with the ‘out of sight out of mind attitude’. Despite being less on show than in summer, the skin is the body’s largest organ and needs to be taken care of accordingly. It might not seem appealing, but applying body lotion as soon as you can after drying off post-cleansing or bathing helps lock in moisture, and avoid fragranced moisturisers, which can lead to skin irritation (look out for ones containing vitamin E and aloe vera to soothe and hydrate). Another skin-saving resolution is to nourish your skin from within by drinking enough water. Water will help flush out any toxins from the body and will help your skin, hair and nails to flourish. NORTHSIDE RECOMMENDS Illuminating Sugar Scrub by Beautify £12.99 www.beautify.co.uk Modern life can cause skin to become dry and dull. Get your glow back with this illuminating sugar scrub. The coarse texture gently exfoliates, lifting away dead skin and impurities to leave skin feeling refreshed, while illuminating shimmer particles will leave your skin with a beautiful glow. This little pot of joy is the skin prep product that’ll have you feeling flawless all day. Hotel Chocolat Liquid Chocolate Body Mask £14.95 www.hotelchocolat.com The ganache of thermal body masks; glossy, smooth and utterly decadent. This chocolate body mask is inspired by the Chocolate Delight experience at Hotel Chocolat’s Cocoa Juvenate Spa in Saint Lucia and packed with cocoa seed butter, almond, coconut and apricot oil to leave skin soft and glowing. Apply by the handful, leave for ten minutes and rinse with a warm, damp cloth.

Simply Hearing now offer Speech-inNoise Hearing Tests, and can also verify your hearing aid fitting with Real Ear Measurements and Speech Mapping. REMs - Real Ear Measurement (REM) is an essential step that measures the performance of the hearing aid while it’s in the ear for more accurate fitting to your hearing prescription. Speech in-Noise - This is a test which provides valuable information about a person’s ability to hear in the presence of background noise. During the test you will hear a series of sentences with increasing background noise which you will be required to repeat back what you hear. A score will be used to determine your ability to recognise speech. TENS Test - Threshold Equalising Noise (TEN) testing is used to identify dead regions (DRs) of the cochlea. Identification of a DR is important for effective hearing aid fitting and modification of hearing aid prescription. Tympanometry – Measures the middle ear status and function. Recent studies have shown that hearing issues that go untreated can cause people to become socially isolated, which can in turn lead to depression, anxiety and even dementia and Alzheimer’s in later life. By popping into Simply Hearing, you can have any hearing problems diagnosed, and Meharban can provide you with a bespoke hearing healthcare plan and solutions tailored to you. As well as this, Simply Hearing can evaluate and service your existing hearing aids and accessories. But, despite having access to more information than ever before, many women still don’t know enough. So says Dr Clare Spencer, an expert in the menopause and HRT (hormone replacement therapy). She adds: “We need greater education, understanding and awareness of the menopause. And women need to know that they can ask for help.” A GP since 2007, with a background in obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr Spencer now focuses on helping women make informed choices about how best to manage the menopause. Since the start of the new year, she has been running a new menopause clinic at BMI The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate. “From what I’ve seen, there’s a lack of recognition that in your mid to late forties you might start getting symptoms of the perimenopause, which is when your ovaries start winding down,” she says. “Women at this stage often experience irregular periods and mood changes, and feel anxious and unable to cope, but they don’t realise these are due to the menopause. Many of them think, or are told, that they are too young to be going through it. This is why the increase in publicity and awareness is brilliant.” With 51 being the average age that a woman in the UK reaches the menopause, and around 1 in 100 experiencing it before the age of 40, many women have to cope with its effects while juggling a job and a young family. So greater education and understanding is needed not just among women themselves, says Dr Spencer, but also among GPs and employers. She gives regular educational talks to GPs in Harrogate and Leeds, and since 2012 has also been the training programme director for GP training in Leeds. “Often women are not diagnosed properly because there’s

A

a lack of awareness that the menopause can happen at any age,” she says. “About one per cent of my patients have Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, which is when the menopause begins early. Some are in their twenties and, for them, it can be devastating because all their hopes of having children are dashed. “I also see women in their sixties, seventies and sometimes even their eighties who have struggled for years and have

“We need greater education, understanding and awareness of the menopause. And women need to know that they can ask for help.” had enough. It’s all about how your body and brain reacts to the hormone changes caused by the menopause, and unfortunately some women are just really sensitive to it. Just as some have post-natal depression or PMS (premenstrual syndrome), others struggle with the menopause. It’s totally beyond their control.” Dr Spencer welcomes recent moves by some of the UK’s major corporations to introduce a menopause policy in the workplace. She says: “Women can be criticised or made to feel inadequate if their performance drops off at work. It can lead to them giving up work or changing their job. So it’s great that the likes of Channel 4 and Severn Water are leading the way in putting menopause policies in place. “This acknowledges that women in their mid forties onwards may be experiencing menopausal symptoms and may need workplace adaptations and flexibility at work. Simple things such as opening a window or putting a fan on the desk, to providing a uniform that accommodates a changing body shape, can make a real difference.” So how can women cope with the symptoms they experience as they go through the menopause? Dr Spencer says: “Lifestyle changes can make a difference. Eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising regularly are very important generally, as is cutting down on alcohol and smoking. “For many women, HRT makes a real difference, while

others find it more helpful to take herbal alternatives. A lot of what I do is advising women on the risks and benefits of HRT, and these can be different for each individual. There are women who stopped taking HRT during the first breast cancer scare in the early 2000s and who are coming to see me because they are struggling to cope nearly 20 years later. Others have particular medical issues that make HRT a little bit tricky. “The important thing is that women are given the information they need to enable them to make an informed decision on what’s best for them. GPs are a great port of call but also talk to your friends, talk to your employer or someone at work, or seek out a community group.” She adds: “In 1900, the average age at which women reached the menopause was 57 and life expectancy was 59. In 2017, the figures were 51 and 82, which means women can now spend over a third of their life going through the menopause. So please don’t struggle in silence. Help really is there if you need it.” BMI The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate will be holding a free information evening with Dr Clare Spencer in April, focusing on how to recognise and manage symptoms of the menopause. Women can also self-refer to see Dr Spencer by calling the hospital direct. For more information or to book an appointment please call 01423 567136 or 0800 068 1415.

EATING OUT

Classic connection CHRIS WILSON HEADS NORTH AND DISCOVERS A HOTEL RESTAURANT WITH A DIFFERENCE. et as it is within the grounds of a spectacular 1,400-acre estate and home to a luxury spa, shooting grounds and a 4x4 off-roading trail, plus an historic church that comes in handy for weddings, you could hardly call The Coniston Hotel a small concern. But to dine in the venue’s delightful Macleod’s restaurant is to reconnect with the days when the hotel and estate began life as a small farm shop, selling produce grown on the estate. The vibe is gentle and relaxed, albeit with a painstaking attention to detail. This is not a corporate chain hotel that does food, but an independent restaurant which has been owned by the Bannister family for the last 50 years and remains dedicated to preserving the best values of old school fine dining, but with none of the attendant stuffiness. So white-gloved waiters and white linen tablecloths are present and correct, and with gentle piano music tinkling in the background, we relaxed into the spacious, high-ceilinged venue and set about disseminating the inventive, packed menu while nibbling on delicious freshbaked bread. Seasonal and local are the watchwords here for a selection of dishes including meat and game from nearby farms and fish and shellfish from the region’s ports. Meanwhile the fabulous wine list (courtesy of Wright’s of Skipton) has a lovely selection of new and old world choices including some fantastic selections by the glass, specially chosen to match each dish on the menu. This certainly persuaded me to allow the hotel sommelier to select three glasses of wine to suit my food choices. It transpired I was in expert hands. For starters a lobster ravioli, served in a fragrant bisque with fennel and a decadent dollop of caviar, was the best possible introduction to Macleod’s modern approach to serving classic ingredients. The pillow-soft pasta was perfect, the seafood sparkling fresh, and the accompanying glass of Pouilly Fume an ideal accompaniment to an immaculately delivered, unfussy plate of food.

S

Similar superlatives were offered from across the table as a slow-cooked piece of pork belly, with pig cheek and parsnip on the side, fell off the fork and delivered full flavour. To follow I chose venison, seared on the outside and blushing pink in the middle. It was tender, delicious and came with a nicely judged accompaniment of kale, garlic and black pudding. A glass of full-bodied Nebbiolo wine was another perfect companion. Meanwhile across the table red meat was coming up trumps again in the form of beef shortrib with accompaniments of red cabbage, shin of beef and truffle potato. These are cuts of meat that you don’t see on too many menus and require slow, careful cooking to deliver maximum taste and tenderness. Macleod’s delivered the goods. For desserts there were some tantalising combinations on offer such as banana parfait with caramel, peanut and marshmallow or duck egg custard tart with vanilla ice cream, but I chose a gorgeous winter dessert of mulled apples with figs and blackberry with pain d’espices (a type of gingerbread heady with cinnamon and nutmeg). It was not too heavy, rather classy and once again

the wine pairing, a Californian Muscat, was judged to perfection. Meanwhile my companion, who does not possess the sweetest of tooths, was savouring an exquisite cheese plate which included Leeds blue, an English Camembert from Tungworth and a vintage red Leicester. With a selection of crackers made in house, fig chutney, spiced apricot and quince, it ensured that the high standards continued from start to finish. Dinner at Macleod’s is £42 for three courses (£69 with wine flight). The lobster ravioli starter has a £2.50 supplement and we also had sides of chantenay carrots (£3.75) and pont neuf potatoes (£3.75). Rudding Park Creates Better Days INTRODUCING THE CANNABIDIOL (CBD) MEETINGS EXPERIENCE WHICH PROMOTES POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE. udding Park in Harrogate is well known for its award-winning hotel, spa and golf courses and for many, Rudding House is the natural choice when celebrating key milestones from birthdays, weddings and anniversaries to graduations and retirements. However, Rudding House is also widely regarded as one of the best business venues in Yorkshire and meetings at Rudding Park just got a little more interesting. The way people and businesses work has changed immeasurably over recent years. Flexible working has thrown structured working patterns out the window and smart devices mean we are on ‘on call’ 24/7. Many organisations are moving towards paperless working to help the environment and with positive mental health at the forefront of the news agenda, ‘wellness in the workplace’ can’t be ignored. Rudding Park has embraced this and is promoting positive mental health in the workplace with the introduction of a CBD Meetings Experience. The experience forms part of their ‘Create Better Days’ initiative, where the meeting organiser, delegates and employer can all reap rewards. Designed as a response to the changes in today’s working environment, the ‘Create Better Days’ initiative sees meeting organisers save time completing unnecessary paperwork and with no contract to sign there is less financial commitment. As dietary requirements become more prevalent – adding to the workload for meeting planners – the onus has been removed from the organiser as delegates can choose on the day. Greater flexibility surrounding

timings is also offered and it is hoped the combination of all these factors will help alleviate stress for the organiser in the run up to the event. Inspired by, and at the heart of the ‘Create Better Days’ initiative, is the new CBD Meetings Experience which promotes positive mental health in the workplace. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring constituent found in the cannabis plant and is reported to help reduce anxiety and support positive mental health along with many other benefits including helping to improve relaxation, reduce pain and stiffness and reduce physical inflammation. Hendrik Le Roux, Rudding Park business development manager, comments: “As an employer, Rudding Park takes wellness in the workplace seriously and is very much a part of its culture. Due to its many health benefits, CBD is a relatively new trend taking the wellness world by storm. We always look for innovative ways to enhance our guest experience and felt there was an opportunity to incorporate CBD into the business environment, allowing delegates who may being feeling stressed to benefit. “The ‘Create Better Days’ initiative will also appeal to employers as staff with positive mental health are likely to be more productive, interact well with colleagues and stakeholders, adapt and embrace changes in the workplace. It also demonstrates the employer cares for their people, reinforcing wellness in the workplace.” CBD is legal in the UK as long as it does not contain more than 0.2% of THC, the crucial component that gives cannabis its psychotic effects.

CBD Meeting Experience Available for meetings of 10-30 delegates On arrival: CBD tea with a CBD chocolate Bottle hemp water (500ml) Hot towel hand wrap infused with CBD oil Spray of CBD oil under the tongue (optional) Lunch: Delegates can order on the day, from the Wellness Menu Refreshments: 2 additional servings of wellness snacks (mid-morning and mid-afternoon) Corporate Social Responsibility: £1 donation to the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre in Harrogate Day Delegate Rate £35 Enhance your Experience: Introduction on the benefits of CBD by a Senior Spa Therapist 10-minute hand massage with CBD oil applied to soothe and aid healing CBD gummy bears £10 per delegate For more information or to book a CBD Meeting Experience www.ruddingpark.co.uk

Gin making just got personal LUCINDA HURST TRIES HER HAND AT CRAFTING HER OWN TIPPLE, COURTESY OF THE LIQUOR STUDIO LEEDS. rom the alcohol aficionados Dan Crowther and Jonathan Lee, of cult Leeds bar The Hedonist, comes the Liquor Studio Leeds; a creative space where you can blend your own version of the current drink du jour, gin.

F

An introduction to gin Sitting down at the table, ready for a night of gin making, the drinks are already flowing. There are a variety of tonics on offer – the Blood Orange & Elderflower goes down particularly well around the table. Once everyone has a drink, Jon gets started on the intense history of gin. His passion for the history of the drink, combined with the dark twists and turns, and Dan’s entertaining interjections keeps the storytelling more like a stand-up set than a history lesson; from sailors searching for Jenever (a Dutch spirit closer to whisky, but the namesake Juniper flavour is bold), to the ruins of Gin Lane, and the truth behind why gin is often known as ‘Mother’s ruin’.

Finding your flavour Moving into the present day and on into the studio room, the benches are lined with rows and rows of infused spirits, all handcraft by Jon. Each one takes eight hours to make, and there are countless tiny bottles filling the room. Moving through the rows, your challenge is to find the flavours you’ll love in the right ratios, to create your own custom blend. A wheel of flavours takes you through the different taste profiles, from floral and herbal, through spiced and earthy. Plenty of trial, error and tonics come into play here, as you test out your various batches. 56 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

What difference does it make? WANTING YOUR HOME TO HAVE THE ‘WOW’ FACTOR? IT’S TIME TO CALL IN THE EXPERTS, EXPLAINS ELEANOR AND GLYN GODDARD, OWNERS OF FURNISH & FETTLE. hese days, we are bombarded with images of beautiful homes. There are TV shows about the subject, Instagram feeds full of pictures and the internet is bursting with companies offering that perfect piece of furniture or stylish accessories. There is no wonder, then, that it can feel some what overwhelming and many people end up with a random assortment of lovely things that just don’t work well together. “We see it all the time,” says Eleanor. “People have bought a new property, take the furniture with them from their last home, buy a few lovely pieces but are then disappointed that somehow the finished result is lacklustre.” There is a lot to think about when designing the interior of a home. As well as creating the desired look and feel, practicalities must be considered and, of course, there is that all important issue of budget. Some people enjoy this process and are happy to commit the hours to researching each different aspect, but for many it is simply a chore and a drain on

T

their precious free time. That is where calling in the experts can quite literally be a life-changing experience. One client who has experienced this is Claire Strachan. “I was genuinely amazed how quickly the designers at Furnish & Fettle were able to pull together a colour scheme for the paint and suggest soft furnishing combinations that we loved. “All I had provided was a carpet sample, some fabric from the sofa and a brief that I wanted an outdoor, cosy log cabin type feel to the room. They subsequently matched fabrics for cushions and throws, provided us with ideas for paint colours and blinds that we had never previously considered. All of

this advice was given in the showroom for no charge. As a result of this, I would be more than happy to arrange a home review in future.” “Sometimes people just need to dip their toe in the water to see the difference an interior designer can make to their home. Once one room is transformed, very often the rest of the house follows!” adds Glyn. Mrs Strachan goes on to say: “We had never considered using an interior designer before, because we always thought it would be out of our budget. The time we saved in not trailing the children around shops for weekends on end was worth its weight in gold. We also ended up with a lounge that we would never have come up with ourselves and that we are over the moon with.” Furnish & Fettle 16 High Street, Wetherby, LS22 6LT Tel: 01937 581451 10 Royal Parade, Harrogate, HG1 2SZ Tel: 01423 560757 https://furnishandfettle.co.uk Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 65

Ceramique Internationale is one of the UK’s leading tile suppliers. New for 2020 collections include:

Farrow: offering powerful personality, the Farrow collection is available in a traditional 10 x 30cm brick size and is made up of seven soft and soothing colours, including Ivory, Light and Mid Grey and Charcoal. Also featured in the range are shades Antibe Blue and Emperor Red – deep, rich colours which help to beautifully showcase an area without dominating it, making them ideal choices for feature walls. The surface of these tiles has a gentle undulation that elegantly reflects light in different directions, and, unlike other glazed brick tiles, Farrow has a delicate waxy shine – so is much more alluring than a flat, full gloss tile.

Chalon: designed to suit English interior tastes, Chalon is a collection of soft-toned limestone-effect tiles available in four earthy, neutral tones including Beige, Cream and Khaki – which match the current domestic demand for soft, warm-based shades and subtle tonality. Featuring a certified anti-slip rating and sophisticated matt finish, this classic collection combines good looks and practicality to showcase the premium quality of Italianmade tiles. These tiles provide a stunning look in any room from the bathroom to a modern kitchen and are an ideal choice for creating the seamless indoor-outdoor design that is so on-trend right now.

Deserved recognition THERE IS PLENTY TO CELEBRATE FOR IRWIN MITCHELL’S FAMILY LAW TEAMS. he Yorkshire Family Law teams at Irwin Mitchell are celebrating after numerous successes in the teams over the past couple of months. In September the Sheffield family law team was ranked in the top tier in the Legal 500 with the head of the Sheffield team, Zoe Round, being ranked as a Leading Individual for Family Law. The Leeds Family Law team were also ranked in the Legal 500 with testimonials describing the team as “a personal approach to family law, which a client might not otherwise expect to find in a large firm”. On 10 October the teams celebrated a double triumph after beating some tough competition at the Yorkshire Legal Awards to win Family Team of the Year and being ranked in Chambers and Partners – all on the same day. The Yorkshire Legal Awards was attended by Zoe Round, Maisie Huynh and Roopen Kalirai who were delighted to accept the award for Family Law Team of the year. The team was recognised as “being highly acclaimed by their clients both for their breadth of legal knowledge but also for showing a caring attitude”. At the ceremony Zoe Round described the win as phenomenal and praised the team for their contribution to the win; the award was dedicated to the leadership of Martin Loxley who had successfully led the team for a number of years. Irwin Mitchell was also shortlisted in six other categories including residential property, employment and private client. The much awaited Chambers and Partners 2020 publication ranked the Sheffield family law team as the only family law team in Band 1 for Family Law in Sheffield and the surrounding area and the Leeds team in Band 2. The Chambers and Partners entry noted that the team is “highly respected for the breadth of its expertise and its handling of high-value and complex matters”. The team was highly praised for its client care with one interviewee commenting that the team “consistently endeavour to

offer a high level of service to their clients” and “Client care is a priority and one of their areas of strength“. A number of individuals were highlighted in Chambers and Partners as notable practitioners in the area. Zoe Round was described as “pragmatic and practical” with her “collaborative, outcome-focused approach.” Former National Head of Family Law Martin Loxley was ranked as a senior statesperson for his “deeply experienced” presence in the market. Associate Solicitor Maisie Huynh, who is based in Sheffield but also works in Leeds, was highlighted as one of the Associates to Watch with sources saying “She often deals with more complex issues and has a strong understanding of the financial implications of a situation”. The team had the most number of notable practitioners recommended in the directory; with Maisie Huynh being the only Associate to Watch for family law in Sheffield. Zoe Round is keen to highlight that the successes of the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners rankings were based on the successes of the team as a whole: “we have a one team mentality and our breadth of expertise

means that we are able to offer the best service to all clients at every level”. Behind the scenes the teams have gone from strength to strength. Scott Halliday was promoted to Associate in October 2019. In August trainee solicitor Edward Allan completed his training contract with the firm and has been retained as part of the Sheffield family law team. Olivia Green and Ellie Fairhurst joined the teams in Leeds and Sheffield as part of the firm’s Apprentice Paralegal programme; and in October, Clodie Allott, a paralegal in Sheffield, was offered a training contract with the firm. Zoe Round explains that the development of the team at every level is a key driver; there is an emphasis on inclusivity and diversity to ensure that the team recruits and retains the best possible talent. Contact Zoe Round on 0114 274 4400 or email Zoe.Round@irwinmitchell.com for further information. www.irwinmitchell.com
