Shining examples Did you know that Leeds leads the way when it comes to advanced medical procedures? There’s lots to discover... t is not widely known that patients in our region have ready access to some of the country’s and the world’s leading medical specialists across a range of specialties, both as NHS patients and as private patients. Many remember seeing the news of the UK’s first hand transplant being carried out in Leeds. This surgery hasn’t been the only shining example of medical expertise from our region. Other techniques and new procedures include:
I
n The technique for treating varicose veins using laser was pioneered by surgeons here in Leeds which have enabled thousands to have same-day procedures in place of lengthy surgical operations and prolonged recovery periods. n New techniques in the management of chronic pain involving the implantation of high tech devices into the spine. n Devices are also now fitted in the body to manage conditions ranging from incontinence to stomach paralysis. n Microsurgery – the technique using a microscope to enable the specialist surgeon to join successively smaller

blood vessels and nerves (typically 1mm in diameter) to enable tissue to be removed and transferred from one part of the body to another and for the reattachment of severed limbs. n Liver surgery involving the removal of extensive sections of the liver for the treatment of liver, bile duct and other cancers. The liver experts in Leeds receive referrals from all over the world. n Treatments for cancers including sarcoma and melanoma often involve extensive plastic, reconstruction surgery. The team here in Leeds are highly specialised and have earned an international reputation which as a result, brings patients from all over the globe. The presence of specialist consultants and their support teams acts as a catalyst for further learning and often results in the centres becoming recognised as a “tertiary” centres to which patients from wide areas are referred. One of the region’s largest private hospitals, Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay, has developed its medical and support teams, equipment and facilities in close collaboration with consultant
specialists over the last 25 years. It now undertakes all of the procedures featured here and receives referrals from all over the UK and further afield. The hospital recently became the first private hospital in the UK to undertake a toe to hand limb transfer procedure, performed by Professor Simon Kay, consultant plastic and microsurgeon, and has also recently been awarded the prestigious MacMillan Service Mark, an award recognising the hospital’s services in cancer care. Professor Peter Lodge, consultant liver surgeon also makes the point that Spire Leeds Hospital has over 350 specialist consultants working at the hospital which means there is an enormous pool of medical knowledge to draw on. This has been one of the many factors in enabling the hospital to develop complex surgical and medical services. Spire Leeds Hospital has now has out-patient clinics in Ilkley and Harrogate. For further information about services or for quotes for any treatment, please contact Spire on 0113 218 5977 or email info@spireleeds.com

Born in the wilds of Minnesota – the land of 10,000 lakes – just as Radisson was, FireLake combines the mid-west traditions of open-flame cooking and the art of cocktail creation. Here it’s all about the flavour of the flame using the same techniques practiced for centuries: as many of our dishes as possible are wood and flame-cooked or wood-smoked, our cocktails are barrel-aged, our beers hand-crafted and our food from the neighbourhood and often organic. Our culture and style is deeply rooted in our North American birthplace but our essence is closer to home. Hence you’ll find local produce, local dishes and local heritage intertwined with the FireLake signatures. Perhaps this is all too contrived: what we’re really trying to bring you are just great tastes in a great space – all delivered with great service, a big heart and an even bigger smile. We are Leeds. Welcome to FireLake. Radisson BLU Hotel Leeds opened it's doors in 2002. Housed in the elegant surroundings of the Art Deco style former Grade ll listed building that was once the Leeds Permanent Building Society. 2015 sees a new era for the Radisson BLU Hotel Leeds. Here we reveal Fire Lake Grill House and Cocktail Bar, the flagship within the UK. Fire Lake Grill House and Cocktail Bar has been a huge success in the US. Discover the mouth-watering delights at Cork & Claw. ast becoming Yorkshire’s first choice for seafood, the new Cork & Claw Seafood and Grill is wowing guests with its fabulous range of the freshest ocean delights. This incredible new concept has been personally designed and developed by experienced operators Rachel Lambie and Peter Sowerby. With over 40 years of combined experience, the talented couple have owned and run many restaurants and hospitality businesses. The Cork & Claw Seafood and Grill is their latest success story and becoming the number one seafood grill in Yorkshire is their goal. All dishes have been carefully designed personally by the couple, unique amongst restaurant operators, as both are chefs. Their suppliers are also ‘best in show’, award-winning Ramus, and Sykes House Farm in Harrogate and Wetherby supply top quality seafood and beef to the Cork & Claw. “Too many operators don’t pay enough attention to the quality of the products they buy and concentrate their efforts on buying average products at the cheapest price they can get it for,” says Peter Sowerby. “Restaurants win awards and excite customers by being consistently brilliant. Ramus and Sykes have been top of their class consistently for years, which makes all the difference in the kitchen.” Some of the mouth-watering delights on reading the menu make it hard to choose. Chardonnay mussels, giant tempura wasabi mayo king prawns, garlic and gruyere queen scallops, fresh Cajun red tuna, chorizo blue crab chilli and giant langoustine linguini together with the restaurant’s most popular dishes of fillet steak and king prawn skewers and lobster thermidor. The grill section of the menu is just as amazing and brings honey coated ribs, ribeye and fillet steaks for the nonseafood guests. “It’s very important to cater for both couples and families so it was crucial to structure a menu in such a way so that portions could be downsized to suit our younger guests,” said Rachel. “For years as a parent I have been disappointed with the lack of importance restaurants put on children so we decided to make a difference. All our food is freshly made, nourishing and healthy for children. Regularly we are seeing children eating tuna, mussels and lobster. It’s very encouraging.” The couple have a fast expansion plan during the next three years and already have two venues open – The Cork & Claw at The Woolpack in Yeadon and The Cork & Claw at The Duke East Keswick. Reservations can be made via the website at www.corkandclaw.com. Two more venues are due to open in August and October in Menston and Leeds city centre, details of which can be found on the website in due course. The Cork & Claw is poised to become big news in the Leeds area and its success is due to years of experience in delivering the right combinations of ambiance, service and quality food. Make sure you make a note of it in your social calendar as ‘the one to visit’.

Keeping it in the family
The new cookbook from Leeds restaurant Salvo’s celebrates a culinary dynasty – and delicious Italian cuisine. inging chefs, secret recipes, small screen stardom – the 40-year history of Salvo’s makes for quite a story. And now that story is being shared in a stunning new production from RMC Books. ‘My Family and Other Italians: The Salvo’s Story’ is a fitting celebration of an iconic Leeds restaurant. Salvo’s was founded in 1976 and continues to delight customers from far and wide today, with a winning combination of good cheer, great service and delicious, authentic Italian cuisine. As well as revealing cherished recipes from the Salvo’s kitchen, the book traces the origins of the restaurant – a tale that goes all the way back to southern Italy, and ‘Salvo’ himself. Salvatore Dammone was a handsome young go-getter, who set sail for England in search of excitement with new bride Nunzia in tow. After a brief move back to the
S
Old Country, Salvo returned to Leeds to open his namesake restaurant – and the rest, as the cliché goes, is history. From the very start Salvo’s was a family affair, with sons John and Gip Dammone being deeply involved in the business. The brothers remain in charge today, and in recent years have steered the restaurant towards even greater success – not least an appearance on Gordon Ramsay’s F Word, which saw Salvo’s being crowned the UK’s favourite Italian neighbourhood restaurant. It had long been an ambition of John and Gip’s to produce a book to celebrate their wonderful legacy. Thanks to RMC Books, that dream became a reality. The specialist cookbook publishers provided the services of their team of experts, resulting in a brilliant new addition to a growing catalogue of award-winning titles. ‘My Family and Other Italians’ is brought to life through stunning pictures from experienced photographer Tim Green. From shots documenting the hustle and bustle of the restaurant, to food pictures that look good enough to eat, Tim’s expertise makes the book a real feast for the eyes. The book brings together some of the
Dammones’ best-loved recipes. Compiled by the charismatic Gip, they’re designed to encourage readers to develop their own ‘feel’ for cooking Italian – many even dispense with weights and measurements! But besides the culinary tips and tricks, ‘My Family and Other Italians’ is filled with the hilarious anecdotes that make the Salvo’s story so unique. John and Gip recall the restaurant’s early days, when Italian cuisine was considered to be so exotic that Salvo took to hanging his coat over the kitchen keyhole to stop chefs peeking in and stealing his pizza dough secrets! There was the memorable foray into nightclub management, when Salvo sought to expand his interests with a new venue – the top floor of which became a gambling den. That particular business venture came to an abrupt end when Nunzia Dammone issued her husband with an ultimatum: either the card games went, or she did… Oh, and the singing chef mentioned earlier? That’s Pinuccio – John and Gip’s ‘uncle Pinu’ – who would delight customers with his gutsy renditions of Italian songs while working away in the kitchen. The Dammones estimate that before he passed away, Pinu had made over a million pizzas. It’s these stories and treasured recipes that make ‘My Family and Other Italians’ such a treat. By sharing them, the Dammones have created a cookbook that all families can enjoy. ‘My Family and Other Italians: The Salvo’s Story’ is available from Amazon and directly from Salvo’s (www.salvos.co.uk) priced at £15. find ribs and chicken wings, Around The World classics ranging from Whitby scampi to Namibian springbok tagine, and Bierkeller classics such as bratwurst and pretzels for those wanting to embrace the Bavarian in them. So, don’t limit yourself to one night out. Kick off your summer by exploring three venues with three very different drinks, food menus and atmospheres to satisfy every taste. Come see the Live Oompah Bands and Live DJs on Friday and Saturday nights, relax to some midweek acoustic music, or enjoy Kellerfest on Sundays, where some of Leeds finest bands play every week from 8pm-late. And the best part is it’s free entry all night. Look out for their themed weeknights too. Call 08455 333 000 for general bookings or visit www.thebierkeller.com, www.atw80.com or www.shootersportsbar.co.uk for more details. Whatever night you want, your party starts here. Siam Oriental is really a departure from the norm. Gone are the heavily themed, crimson shades and cluttered environments that are typical of oriental eateries. These are replaced by an approach that gives great emphasis to clean crisp lines, balance and intelligent use of space. Our head chief brings with him the culinary heritage of Thailand with recipes and techniques he has perfected through years of experience. Drawing on centuries old oriental and European influences he prepares mouth watering dishes using only the freshest ingredients that gives Siam Oriental its authentic taste of Orient.

PROMOTIONSAN CARLO Deliciously San Carlo this summer season. ith spring well and truly in full swing, no doubt you’ll be looking for that perfect spot to while away those long, warm summer evenings. Combining an understated yet sophisticated charm with wonderfully authentic Italian cooking, you need not look any further than San Carlo in Leeds this summer season. Bringing vibrant and fervent Italian cooking flair to the UK, the family-run team offers the very best in genuine Italian cuisine, and with a track record of delighting customers for over three decades, there’s no doubt that San Carlo has gained a reputation for food that’s hard to resist. Passionate in the notion of ‘family first’, this team of people recognise the delights of hearty, simple dishes made with only the finest ingredients, as well as spoonfuls of love and care. Among the wide selection of food on offer, there’s Pasta Alla Norma (the most popular pasta dish in southern Italy with aubergines, tomatoes, basil and garlic all topped with
W
pecorino cheese); a mouth-watering Mixed Shellfish ‘Royale’ – a plate zinging with flavour thanks to giant prawns, scallops and mussels, and for the meat lovers – Agnello Alla Toscana (lamb cutlets in Madeira sauce with rosemary and sun dried tomatoes). All of the dishes are masterminded by chef consigliere, Aldo Zilli. It’s not just the food that the team at San Carlo hold close to their hearts – San Carlo Leeds offers an unrivalled serene yet stylish, airy yet comfortable atmosphere. Boasting a striking iced seafood display set behind a beautifully hand-crafted marble bar imported from Italy, along with a full team of Italian staff, San Carlo truly brings the zest of Italy to your doorstep. During the lead up to summer, you’ll no doubt want to take advantage of the alfresco dining area at San Carlo’s
second restaurant in Leeds, Flying Pizza in Roundhay. Sit outside while soaking up the sun and imagine yourself in Italy, which is made that much easier thanks to our large offering of mouth-watering delicacies including Garganelli Salsiccia and Porcini (special egg pasta with a spicy sausage especially imported from Calabria with porcini mushroom and a light tomato sauce). It’s an experience that will certainly delight all the senses. For more information about the restaurants, and to secure your table now, telephone San Carlo Leeds on 0113 246 1500 or Flying Pizza on 0113 266 6501, email leeds@sancarlo.co.uk, flyingpizza@sancarlo.co.uk or visit the website www.sancarlo.co.uk

PROMOTIONCARING FOR LIFE
Esther and Peter Parkinson with sons Jonathan (left), who is CEO, and Tim (second left), who is executive director of the charity
Building a community
WORDS: PHOEBE SEYMOUR
There’s much more to Crag House Farm than meets the eye... ho’d have thought that going on a lunch date or purchasing plants from your local farm could make such a huge difference to people’s lives? By visiting Crag House Farm, you are doing just that. Caring For Life (CFL) is a Christian charity that provides accommodation, support and friendship to the homeless and vulnerable, not just in the short term, but throughout their lives. This includes people with learning difficulties and those who have had traumatic experiences. Following Jesus’ example, it doesn’t matter how old they are or what background they have, CFL welcomes everyone. CFL started 28 years ago, after baptist minister Peter Parkinson noticed several homeless men attending his church in Leeds. This plunged some of the Church members into a whole new form of outreach and thanks to the joint efforts of founder Esther Smith, CFL was formed. Peter bought Crag House Farm and the rest is history.
W

What started out as little more than a farmhouse and a small amount of land has expanded into 120 acres, including an on-site cafe, restaurant, farm shop and nursery. The charity runs 17 therapeutic projects to teach skills and help those in need achieve a more independent, dignified and routine lifestyle. There are farm projects such as agriculture, woodwork such as building bird boxes and feeders, and helping out in the stables, but there are also a number of other projects including art, drama and computer classes and even numeracy and literacy training. This means that when you buy beautiful flowers from their greenhouse, you’re not only donating money, you’re giving one of the gardeners, who grew them from seeds, a rewarding experience which will cultivate confidence. Marketing manager and Peter’s daughter-in-law Buffy Parkinson says their customers’ donations are deeply
appreciated and are still much needed. “We may have a beautiful restored barn and a shiny exterior, but we still need money to keep us open,” says Buffy. “Our aim is to become self-sufficient. We don’t get any government funding and the majority of our donations come from individuals.” And their donations are not only received from local individuals, but from organisations far and wide. Their two huge greenhouses, with their remote water and heat control, were a generous donation from Green Circle Growers, a company based in America. Even the impressive Granary restaurant, which won the Leeds Architecture Awards 2013, would not have been possible without the donations of generous individuals. The Granary café and restaurant opened in 2012, and has received rave reviews from customers. Enjoy sitting in the converted 17th-century barn with its wooden beams framing the ceiling or sit in the conservatory area where you can

look out at the tranquil countryside while you eat. The daytime menu is full of British favourites such as scampi and chips, sirloin steak and gammon, egg and chips. Enjoy the pie of the day, the scones or a piece of honey cake, all of which are lovingly made onsite with the farm’s ingredients and most of the proceeds go back into the running of CFL. Not forgetting those who rely on the CFL, Crag House Farm is home to The Refectory where the kitchen was partly funded by Santander, the dining area provides breakfast and lunch for up to 50 people a day. The charity currently runs two supported living homes in Leeds, but it is hoped CFL will one day have a village where residents will have a deeper sense of community and greater freedom to look after themselves. CFL are delighted to have Her Royal Highness, Sophie The Countess of Wessex as their patron. The Countess first visited the farm in 2004 after the Wessex Youth Trust donated a gift which
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
covered the cost of a new band saw for their woodwork shop. Her overwhelming enthusiasm and interest in their projects then lead to her becoming a permanent supporter of the charity. Since then, recognition for the charity has grown and grown. They received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award 2005 for voluntary service by groups in the community and an award by The High Sheriff, Virginia Lloyd D.L in 2014 for their outstanding contribution to the County of West Yorkshire. CFL put on a number of events including their annual Open Day, which takes place this year on 13 June. The event is run by a number of volunteers and will give visitors a chance to try out activities such as shearing and drystone walling, as well as stalls, butchery demos and guest appearances from the police and fire brigade. There are also guest appearances from BBC Leeds gardening presenter Joe Maiden and Leeds Rhinos Rugby League’s Jamie Jones-Buchanan. Adult tickets cost £5 and children’s tickets cost £2.50, with all funds raised going to CFL.
But don’t worry if you miss it, there’s always a good reason to visit Crag House Farm. “Coming here is a positive experience,” says Buffy. “There’s great food, a selection of products you won’t find in the supermarket, lots of smiley faces and you will be helping a local charity.” Come and peruse fresh produce including eggs, beef, lamb, vinegars, jams and jellies at the farm shop, pick up some gorgeous gifts, relax with a cup of tea and a scone straight from the oven of their own bakery or take home a beautiful orchid from their garden centre today. It’s a small visit that will dramatically improve other peoples’ lives for life.

LEEDS
THE ARCADES Leeds is proud to house the 19th century Grand Arcade – one of the oldest shopping arcades in Leeds – as well as Thornton’s Arcade and Queen’s Arcade, where you’ll find a selection of shops and boutiques. Each has its own unique identity and atmosphere, so they bring real character to the city and provide a true haven for anyone who wants to shop somewhere different. BRIGGATE As one of Leeds’ main retail streets, Briggate is full to the brim with clothes stores, cafes and eateries. It was founded way back in 1207 and has since developed into the bustling area that we know today. The high-street chains dominate, but there is also great diversity here, ensuring

THE HEADROW An impressive and largely pedestrianised street spanning half a mile, The Headrow is one of Leeds’ primary shopping streets, holding many of the city’s cultural attractions. With St John’s Shopping Centre and The Core in the vicinity, it has a great number of big-name brands. KIRKGATE MARKET One of the largest indoor markets in Europe, Kirkgate is a haggler’s paradise for everything from fresh food and drink, to fashion and jewellery, flowers and haberdashery. Set in impressive Edwardian buildings, the market has a lively programme of events and hosts regular speciality markets. Still the city’s shopping mecca, the market now also plays host to Jamie’s Ministry of Food continuing the market’s tradition of bringing great quality food and drink to the people of Leeds.

Beyond bliss
Envelop yourself in the calming, luxury surroundings of Israel’s Cramim Spa. idden away in the rolling hillsides overlooking Jerusalem nestles the beautiful Cramim Spa, one of the newest additions to the famed Isrotel chain. Cramim is a translation of the word ‘vineyards’, and the stunning approach to the entranceway is flanked with rows of grape trees that are used for the house wine. The grapevine theme is repeated throughout this chic, contemporary haven. There are workshops in the wellstocked lobby wine shop, and winethemed quotes, taken from the Old Testament’s Song of Songs, decorate the walls throughout. The food at Cramim is outstanding… and oh so plentiful. The ‘Breakfast Experience’, taken indoors in the elegant dining area, or overlooking the countryside on the veranda, is simply outstanding. As well as the usual tremendous Israeli hot and cold buffet,
H

innovative and imaginative dishes complement the already vast choice on offer. The 155 guest rooms are calming; decorated in soft grape hues of mauve and green, and are state of the art. Flat screen TVs are viewed through mirrored walls, and the bathrooms are adorned with modern oval bath tubs and power showers. The Spa is the inner sanctum of the building, at basement level, and comprises of 40 separate treatment rooms, with a varied menu of pampering and reviving therapies. There is also a hair salon and trendy boutique on the ground floor, to complete the luxurious experience. Indoor and outdoor pools, a Turkish Hammam, well-equipped gym, and exercise room with free fitness programme ensure that there is more to do than laze in one of the teak rockers, underneath fragrant lemon trees on landscaped terraces… although watching
the sunset from this perspective is beyond bliss. If you can bear to venture out, Cramim is situated near some awesome attractions. Visit Abu Ghosh with its Benedictine Monastery, Mahane Yehuda Market, The Chagal Windows that adorn the nearby Hadassah Hospital’s Synagogue , or Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Site. And, of course, Jerusalem itself is only 13km away.

PROMOTIONIRWIN MITCHELL
Lost promises Paula Myers of Irwin Mitchell on the disputes that can arise when family agreements fall apart. e are handling an increas-ing number of cases for farming families or those with commercial and residential property portfolios where promises are made during a lifetime which can then result in a legal claim being brought after a parent’s death. A traditional case is where a child follows in a parent’s footsteps and starts working on the family farm or in the family business on the promise that one day, on the death of that parent, the farm or the business will pass to them absolutely. If an individual has been promised and has relied on those promises to their detriment then a legal case can be brought under the doctrine of proprietary estoppel should those promises not be forthcoming under a Will or an intestacy scenario (where no Will is left). An individual could expect to receive damages to the value of the promise, though the court has the discretion on this amount. In the majority of cases the child works for very little pay, often well below any market rate and they turn down alternative offers of employment or they
W
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
decide not to search for other improved employment positions because they believe that the future is brighter in the family business. Conflicts can subsequently arise if there are other siblings in the family who have chosen not to work in the family business but consider they have an entitlement to the family inheritance at some point in the future. In some cases, different assurances have been made to different individuals so as not to upset the family balance or relationships. These cases can be costly and highly emotional often splitting family units and sometimes causing assets to be sold to either reach an agree-ment or to fight a legal case. A number of these cases have reached the Supreme Court and have had a high profile in the press because of their circumstances and the legal costs involved. It is important to make plans clear to family members and to document any intentions in a Will, a Letter of Wishes or a Statement or all of these. Talking to family members during lifetime can avoid any shock or disappointment after a loved one has passed away. Specialist
Will Dispute lawyers can help with the planning to avoid problems and the team at Irwin Mitchell have vast experience of handling disputes that arise around those circumstances if plans have not been put in place. Paula Myers, Head of Will, Trust & Estate Disputes at Irwin Mitchell, recently concluded a case through mediation, without having to go to court. The client commented, “Paula managed to very successfully obtain an outcome that all parties were happy to accept after a long day of mediation, which meant that the case did not end up going to court. I cannot speak highly enough of Paula and the very professional way in which she dealt with everything on our behalf, she is an extremely competent lawyer, kind and very patient person and we are all indebted to her as we move on with our lives after what has been a very unpleasant and traumatic few months.” If you would like to discuss any related Will Disputes issues please contact Paula Myers on 0113 394 6832 or email paula.myers@IrwinMitchell.com

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org
Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees
FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

PROMOTIONUFFIZZI INTERIORS Lia (left) and Stephanie – Uffizzi Interiors
Gaultier style
Be bold this season and inject some colour into your home, courtesy of Uffizzi Interiors. e are now rattling away into spring and this year’s trends are for colour! For so long we have been working with neutrals and the many “shades of grey”, but following shows in Paris and Milan we can firmly say that colour is the future. So be brave, embrace nature and bring your homes to life. Bring those Mediterranean colours back with you this summer and bask in all their glory. Life is for living. Indulge the carnival spirit and seize the moment. Here at Uffizzi we are loving the very colourful Jean Paul Gaultier Collection. His use of colour and cheekiness is second to none; there is something for everyone in the collection. There are designs that are ideal for use in both boys and girls rooms – it is a wonderful way to introduce our children to haute couture. Fashion and décor collide head on with Jean Paul!

Quality and style
From designer stoves to sleek bathrooms, BMF has a range of luxurious products to transform your home. perating in Leeds for more than 20 years, BMF is a family business through and through. Run by siblings Paul, Ben and Sam Freeman, the company is going from strength to strength with an enviable reputation for supplying, designing and installing high quality and designer bathrooms, heating, stoves and fires. The company moved to a large 4,000 sq ft, two-floored showroom on Meanwood Road almost one year ago, which now allows the team to showcase more of the fantastic products on offer, as Paul explains: “We now have a floor dedicated to fires and stoves and one to bathrooms, meaning we can display a much wider range of products. From the summer we will also be supplying kitchens from German designer brand Next 125, and so we will definitely need the extra space! For many brands we are the only licensed supplier in the area, and so it’s important people can come and see some of the products, and compare and contrast.” One such exclusive brand is Morsø stoves, as BMF is now the area’s premier approved dealer. With products like the

7443 giving a modern twist on a classic design, it’s easy to see why the brand is so popular. The curved design and large viewing window allows you to make the most of the roaring flames wherever you are in the room. If you’re looking for classic and sophisticated, the Chesney’s Beaumont stove takes some beating. Available in a range of colours and with swept cabriole legs and a corniced top section, it wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home or a modern apartment. Other brands available in store include Harrie Leenders, Stuv, Rais, Aga, Barbas, Piazzetta, Town & Country, Jetmaster, Stovax, Contura, M-Design and Bodart & Gonay. When it comes to bathrooms, the modern world has gone way beyond the simple ceramic suite it once was. One of the innovations available from BMF is the Toto Washlet. Washlets are now found in 65 per cent of Japanese homes. They combine a WC and cleaning system in one, and everything is digital and remote controlled, from lights for night time visits and heated, automatic seats to dryers, deodorisers and a memory for user preferences.
With bathrooms from brands such as Dornbracht, Laufen, Ashton & Bentley, Ben de Lisi, Toto and Keuco, you’ll be spoilt for choice. But don’t forget, a bathroom is also about the finishing touches too. With a stunning range of mixers, shower sets and accessories, the Dornbracht MEM range comes in a variety of finishes including chrome, platinum matt, and cyprum (gold). Paul concludes: “We love nothing better than sitting down with a customer and designing their perfect bathroom, or talking to them about creating a fire to become the central point of their home. We can offer advice and expertise, and also fully certified installations from our in-house installations teams. Come in and have a chat – even though you might think three siblings would fight a lot, we promise we’re a friendly bunch really!”

NORTHSIDELIVING
Seller’s market With buyers champing at the bit and a shortage of properties, there’s no time like the present if you are thinking of putting your home on the market. WORDS: STEPHANIE BURNS omeowners and estate agents across the country breathed a collective sigh of relief last year as the property market finally burst back into life. The devastating effects of the recession had finally begun to wear off, the government-backed Help to Buy scheme was introduced, stamp duty levels were changed and the confidence of homeowners increased – leaving us with a much healthier market. And, as Lester Hurst of Hunters Estate Agents in Ilkley explains, this has created the perfect environment for homeowners looking to sell. “We are currently in a situation where there is insufficient property on the market to satisfy demand from buyers. This shortage of supply is resulting in many vendors achieving their asking price, and sometimes more. Our advice for anyone considering putting their property on the market is to do so without delay, to take advantage of this seller’s market.”
H
NS • page 86
Those with homes in Leeds, Harrogate and York – known as Yorkshire’s ‘golden triangle’ – are particularly well placed to sell, with so many added benefits of owning a home in these sought-after locations. “It is surrounded by beautiful countryside, yet with excellent transport links by road, rail and air, and with a number of excellent schools, making this central belt of England a highly desirable place to live. We are noticing that an increasing number of people from London and the South of England are choosing to relocate to Yorkshire.” While the stricter Lester Hurst
mortgage availability criteria introduced last year restricted lending – and this is still having an effect – mortgage lenders are now competing to lend funds and, as a result, rates are lower than ever. A 30year 25 per cent mortgage at a fixed rate for five years, previously available for around five or six per cent, can now be snapped up for as little as two or three per cent, making monthly mortgage payments cheaper than rent in some cases. But this hasn’t had an adverse affect on the rental market, as it has also seen a surge of interest. Continuing low mortgage rates have resulted in an increasing number of people taking out buy-to-let mortgages to buy investment properties and gain extra income through letting. Overall, it’s a positive message from Lester. “Shortage of supply will inevitably increase property prices throughout the region, hence the pressure to build new developments,” he says. “The market is buoyant, and we expect this to continue for the foreseeable future.”

German excellence
The Porsche Macan is a typical Porsche in every sense of the word and one which deserves your full attention, writes Jordan Cutforth. he brand of Porsche brings with it a certain social status that only very few companies can really achieve. Porsche is a symbol of a successful motorsport heritage as well as an umbrella to which all of the world’s best drivers’ cars are kept within. Any vehicle blessed with the Porsche badge on its nose should be taken very seriously, and the new Porsche Macan is no exception. The Macan is a compact SUV to rival the likes of the Range Rover Evoque and Audi Q5, and the world is a better place for its existence as not only does it set a new benchmark within the compact premium SUV segment, it may possibly be one of the best cars Porsche has ever made on a mass production scale. When you step inside the Macan, you’re greeted with pretty much the same beautifully designed and sculptured dashboard, centre console and dials found in all other Porsche cars. This means that as you’re driving along, you could be mistaken for piloting a Panamera, or even a 911 for that matter. The only give away being the higher driving position, a more spacious interior
T
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
and a more refined and comfortable driving experience. On all Macan models, you even get the same 918 hypercar steering wheel fitted as standard. How cool is that? Talking of the differences, the refinement of the Macan at any speed is simply stunning. The ride has a velvetlike smoothness even when driving in town, and on the motorway there’s hardly any wind or road noise. It brings an air of calmness to the driver which resembles that from more expensive luxury cars. Practicality is on the Macan’s side as well. Inside, there’s not only plenty of room for five fully-grown adults with a decent amount of leg and headroom available, there’s enough room to lug around their luggage as well. The boot can hold an impressive 500-litres and 1,500-litres with the rear seats folded flat. That really does mean absolutely flat. There’re four engines available for the Macan: a 233bhp 2.0-litre fourcylinder petrol (Macan), a 335bhp twinturbo 3.0-litre petrol (Macan S), a 254bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel (Macan S Diesel) and a 394bhp twin-turbo 3.6-litre
petrol (Macan Turbo). All these are great engines with even the basic model achieving 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds and achieving nearly 40mpg. The powerful Turbo can replicate a 4.8 second 062mph time but it still produce of 30mpg on the combined cycle. All are mated to a smooth and quick-shifting seven-speed automatic gearbox. The best feature about the Macan though is the way it drives. It’s a typical Porsche in that sense. Many have commented on how much like a sports car it feels to drive and doesn’t at all feel like a typical SUV. That’s the biggest compliment anyone can give it. For the price, nothing can match the Macan for combining driving enjoyment with everyday family practicality. It’s an exiting car, and one which most certainly deserves a place on your driveway. Leeds Prep School is bowling along
Students rise to sports challenge
Harrogate College campus was transformed into a 5k course as part of the event organisation module for the Level 3 BTEC sport students. The group used skills they learned throughout the year to plan, organise and host an event with a real life application. They chose to create a 5k challenge for people to run, walk or crawl, all in support of St Michael’s Hospice. Each individual student had an important role to play, from the registration process, to marshalling and pace setting. The Students organised sponsorship from Nuffield Health, who provided flat-pack water bottles, and FRANK NUTRITION, who provided healthy nutrition bars.
FireLake set to open
FireLake Grill House & Cocktail Bar opens at Radisson Blu Leeds on 1 June. Born in the wilds of Minnesota – the land of 10,000 lakes – just as Radisson was, FireLake combines the midwest traditions of open-flame cooking and the art of cocktail creation. As many of the dishes as possible are wood and flame-cooked or wood-smoked, the cocktails are barrel-aged, the beers are handcrafted and the food is from the neighbourhood and often organic.

Inspectors impressed by Judges
Judges Country House Hotel is continuing to go from strength to strength. Judges has been an AA Inspector’s Choice Hotel since 2003 and is also an AA four red star Country House Hotel. The hotel also boasts three AA rosettes, first awarded in 2003, and is particularly recommended by the Michelin Guide 2015. It is consistently rated by The Good Hotel Guide and praised by The Times, The Sunday Times and The Telegraph.
The Dining Room at Goldsborough Hall has been judged one of the best in the Head chef Paul country after winning a top food award. Richardson-Mackie The dining experience at this 17th century stately home, near Knaresborough, once home to the Queen’s Aunt HRH Princess Mary, has been just been crowned with a prestigious AA rosette. Owners Clare and Mark Oglesby fell in love with the hall ten years ago, rescuing it from dereliction and meticulously restoring the house, which is set in historic private gardens and parkland. Head chef Paul Richardson-Mackie said: “Everyone knows what an AA rosette is and it’s something that we can all take pride in.” His innovative menus are created using locally sourced produce and seasonal vegetables from the hall’s kitchen garden and orchard. Meeting the brief
The remodelled kitchen featured a platinum blue splashback
If you’re looking to transform your kitchen, check out this recent success story from ALNO. The planning stage: Before visiting our new ALNO flagship showroom, located in Leeds, this particular customer already had an idea of the style they were seeking for their practical yet stylish family kitchen. Our sleek glass handleless finish of the ALNOSTAR VETRINA kitchen ticked their boxes and caught their eye in our showroom display. From this point onwards, we began to work with them to provide the perfect design solution in our glass range, which would fit their needs within the space permitted in their home. After the initial concept stage, where we discussed kitchen ideas and listened to our customer’s preferences, we visited the family home to assess the space. This allowed us to gather the crucial measurements and see exactly the type of space we were working with so we could advise on the best layout and then draw up an inspiring design plan. The shape and size of the original kitchen was quite difficult to accommodate the sought-after kitchen island and necessary storage solutions Join us for the first anniversary celebration of the Leeds ALNO showroom on Saturday 20 June from 12pm until 3pm. This unique event will combine vintage decadence with modern style as local business The Grand Vintage! Tea Room host a very special tea party in our contemporary kitchen showroom, complete with delicious scones, delectable cakes and sandwiches served alongside fresh pots of tea and coffee. Everyone is welcome.

so we advised the customer on opening up additional rooms by taking out certain walls to create a more social, functional living space in their home. Priorities for the customer included multiple storage solutions, large fridge, freezer and wine cooler appliances, as well as a feature kitchen island in the centre of the room with plenty of space and seating for up to four people. Our design: We designed the kitchen island so it is located centrally in the living space and is wide enough to fit the required four seats. It is beautifully finished with a SILESTONE BLANCO STELLAR worktop and includes a SIEMENS IQ100 Induction Hob with enough working space around it for it to be a very functional element of the kitchen. Along the left wall of the room we chose to fit the large stainless steel SIEMENS Coolmax Fridge, SIEMENS ACool freezer and SIEMENS wine cooler. The wall behind the island was ideal for a bank of appliances, perfect for the busy family kitchen, including a SIEMENS single oven, SIEMENS combination microwave and SIEMENS warming drawer. This combination works well with the platinum blue ALNOSTAR VETRINA wall units, fitted with ServoDrive technology, which provides easy-access storage and plenty of space for utensils and crockery. Next to this, the units on the back wall provide generous space for ALNO’s trademark deep drawers, finished in the sophisticated glass of ALNOSTAR VETRINA. The new kitchen also features a QUOOKER Fusion tap, which provides instant boiling water – perfect for busy family life. Above the working kitchen area we
