An outside kitchen

If you can dream it, we can build it… Imagine what a one-off piece of handcrafted furniture or a unique construction concept could do for your home – Haresign Bespoke can make that vision a reality.

uality, unique and bespoke are key words when selecting the right construction, joinery or furniture service. But Haresign Bespoke are the only company in the area who offer all this - plus the opportunity to select the exact tree you would like to use for your project. Haresign Bespoke is based on 185 acres of idyllic farm land on the outskirts of Wetherby and is well-placed to serve the people of Harrogate, Leeds and beyond. Northside spoke to managing director James Haresign to find out more.

Q

What does your company do and how was it established?

Haresign Bespoke started out as a construction company in 2010, but as we

developed there was more and more demand for our bespoke joinery products, so we have evolved to where we are today. We now specialise in the design and production of furniture along with exclusive construction work. Our unique creations are all handcrafted, and we work with our client’s right through from the design and production to installation. What is the best thing about it?

Coming up with the impossible for our clients and seeing the whole process through from concept to construction. One of our unique selling points is that we can take our customers down to our managed woodland so they can choose the tree that will provide the timber for their bespoke furniture - there

Promotion aren’t many companies that do that. By managing our own woodland, it provides us with local, sustainable timber. We make the desirable, deliverable. We can produce absolutely anything our clients could need or imagine within the construction industry.

What has been the most difficult challenge?

How did you end up here?

I'm a joiner by trade. I always wanted to have my own business so that I wasn't restricted and could always push the boundaries of design rather than just being your average joiner/builder. I was always taught that if you want success you have to work for it, so that is what I have done. What do you wish you had known when you started out in business?

You always learn new skills when starting out in business, but sometimes I wish I knew how to switch off! Running your own business can be a difficult balancing act and you have to juggle a multitude of jobs, but switching off is a really good way to recharge your batteries. What excites you about the business?

As a business owner I am always thinking, so the fact I can put my thoughts into motion is really exciting. I am always looking to push the business forward and I never settle for what we have created. What advice would you give to those wanting to get into this industry?

We deliver a personal service and we really can produce anything within the industry. I know the possibilities are endless, and that really does make us unique. parents both have local, successful businesses so it is in the blood, and without them I wouldn’t be where I am today, and I still take advice from them... occasionally!

Work hard and gain the relevant experience by listening to others who have been there before. Take that advice and adapt where you need to. Remember: life is too short to be stuck in a job you hate, do something you love, and if you haven’t found it yet just keep looking.

What makes your company different?

Who do you most admire?

I take enormous pride from our clients when they see what we have done for them. In any business customer satisfaction is really

It has got to be my family. My grandparents were hard working business owners and my

important and every one of those moments means a lot to me, especially when you surpass their expectations.

We deliver a personal service and we really can produce anything within the industry. I know the possibilities are endless, and that really does make us unique. What have been the highlights of your career so far?

One of the biggest challenges is adapting to growth and adapting quickly is a key way to ensure that the business enjoys sustained growth. I think it is so important to have the right people with you who share the same vision and have great pride in what they do, these people are the ones who will help you get through the scary, frustrating and tiresome stages of business. The people I have working for me really make the business what it is and having the right people ultimately determines success or failure. What is your long term goal for the company?

You always need to have clear goals in business and one of ours is to have a recognised brand on a national scale. Why is it good to do business in Sicklinghall/Wetherby?

We've done many jobs for people living within the area. I love the place, I've grown up here, my workshop is here, and the woodland we manage is here. When our work takes us further afield, it is also a great place to come back to! To arrange a consultation and to experience a private woodland tour, contact Haresign Bespoke today, or visit their website to view their inspiration photo gallery.

A bite of Leeds EATNORTH BRINGS STREET FOOD TO THE CITY – EVERY WEEK.

s we look back on the success of the third annual Leeds Indie Food (2728 May), the team behind the city’s favourite food festival have recently announced a brand new project: EatNorth. Starting on 17 June, the new project will be a weekly food fair located at the North Brewing Co taproom in Sheepscar, just outside the city centre – so that keen foodies can grab a bite of Leeds Indie Food all summer long. EatNorth will mark the first street food event that Leeds has seen in several years, and the first weekly event that the city has ever hosted, finally catching up with fellow northern cities like Manchester and Newcastle, where such weekly events are increasingly popular. From Saturday 17 June, North Brewing Co brewers will host a rotating line-up of street food traders at their taproom, only a short walk from well-known independents such as Belgrave Music Hall and The Reliance. This area is set to become a foodie hub, with bustling establishments like The Brunswick and Brewdog all within striking distance. Matt Dix (festival director, Leeds Indie Food) said: “We’ve been trying to get a weekly street food event off the ground for ages, and we’re really chuffed that everything has fallen into place with EatNorth. The North Brewing Co taproom is the perfect place, and we know the North Bar team can find their way around a bar too. “We’ve booked some killer street food traders from all over the UK, with plenty of new faces to Leeds. Events like GRUB in

Manchester show there’s a real appetite for good food and good beer, and we’re excited to offer a bite of Leeds Indie Food every week, all summer.” The first six weeks are already fully booked, with over 30 different street food traders signing on to serve up everything from Taiwanese steamed buns to Canadian poutine, plus speciality coffee and sweet options available every week alongside award winning craft beers, spirits, and wine. Organisers promise a rotating line-up of six traders a week, with each Saturday bringing at least one food truck brand new to the city, some new faces trading for the first time, and old favourites too. Food fans can even expect two unique special editions: EatNorth Vs Hopulance (Friday 7 July), a collaboration with the brewery’s popular DJ night featuring late night food and crafty cocktails, and VegNorth (Saturday 15 July), when some of the country’s best vegetarian and vegan traders will be serving up a totally meat free menu, complimented by vegan beers and wines on the bar. John Gyngell (director, North Brewing Co.) said: “The brewery tap is a great space with huge potential, and we’re keen to build up a regular events programme. The opportunity to work with Leeds Indie Food is really exciting, especially given the reaction to this year’s festival. The quality and variety of the food traders looks incredible, and we love that there will always be something different for people to try with the core range of North Brewing Co. beers and new releases we’ll have on the bar.”

French fancy CLASSIC CUISINE IS GIVEN A YORKSHIRE TWIST AT DOUGH BISTRO. ou don’t have to fly to Paris to sample some of the delicious delicacies for which the city is famous. Dough Bistro is a modern French restaurant with Leeds flair. Originally a bakery, hence the name, Dough Bistro has been developed over the last nine-and-a-half years by executive chef, Luke Downing. Joined by restaurant manager, head chef and partner, Laura MacLeod, they are dedicated to bringing guests some adventurous dishes made from local produce. Swillington Organic Farm and Leventhorpe Leeds Wine are just two of the Yorkshire based businesses they use. What’s more, Laura’s mother, who owned The Loft Tea Rooms in Knaresborough, provides the bistro with her homemade jam. As their special boards change regularly and their bar has a wide range of different cocktails, there is always something new to try at Dough Bistro. Not forgetting desserts, sous chef, Paul assists in creating patisserie style puddings such as spiced creme brûlée and tarte aux pommes. Their outstanding food has earned them this year’s Yorkshire Evening Post Oliver Award for Best Suburban restaurant and they have just been nominated for The Food Awards England award for Best Bistro. Laura started her career by helping her

Y

mother at The Loft Tea Rooms at the tender age of 13. She then came runner up in a junior chef competition going up against Michelin star trained chefs, before discovering a love of French cuisine. “Winning the Yorkshire Evening Post award was completely unexpected,” says Laura. “Serving a dish and someone enjoying it is the most rewarding part of my job. I love cooking and presenting something that looks and tastes delicious. “Luke and I get inspired by weird and wonderful dishes we’ve tried on our travels such as tuna and strawberries. We’ve also had traditional French foods on our menus such

as snails. We are always aiming our food at those who want to try something new.” And in true Parisian style, their setting is just as authentic. With exposed brickwork and candlelit tables, it is a relaxed and romantic setting that is sure to transport you across the channel. It is no wonder then, that Valentine’s Day is their busiest evening of the year. June is set to be another exciting month, with a gin tasting event featuring a matching taster menu, and later in November, the bistro will be celebrating its tenth anniversary with a special customer event. Keep checking their website for more details. Dough Bistro do outside catering for private functions such as birthday parties and tasting events, as well as stalls for public farmer’s markets. Luke also owns British food and prohibition style cocktail bar, Vice and Virtue, and Nineteen Bar & Grill based at Leeds Golf Centre, which is also a popular venue for many of Dough Bistro’s functions. So if you are looking for authentic French food with a Yorkshire twist in a romantic setting, Dough Bistro is the place to go. Cheese and wine – a ham’s best friend HAM & FRIENDS ARRIVES IN LEEDS’ GRAND ARCADE. or a long time we have had to rely on Italian or Spanish restaurants to get our fix of charcuterie and fine cheeses. Spanish Iberico Bellota and Manchego, or fine, aged Parmesan, have been the reserve of only the European restaurants or delis encountered in and around Leeds. All that changed when Friends of Ham opened their pioneering and hugely successful bar on Station Lane three years ago, proving that Brits are hugely keen on enjoying European and European-inspired ingredients such as charcuterie and cheeses (alongside brilliant, British-made produce), with a glass of red or a pint of craft beer. After expanding this first venue into the unit next door due to such high demand (and sparkling reviews in the Observer Food Monthly awards and The Times, amongst many others), they opened an outpost in Ilkley. But the Friends of Ham team didn’t stop there. They then went on to undertake another venture – the creation of sister business, Ham and Friends, back in Leeds city centre. Ham and Friends’ Kitchen will open on 30 May and they are already taking bookings for that week, between 5-9.45pm for tables of 14 people, via the rather wonderful email

F

address squeal@hamandfriends.com. The focus on provenance and high quality seen at Friends of Ham will of course be mirrored in the plates offered in the Ham and Friends Kitchen, as well as in their new wine bar and the food hall. The kitchen is headed up by ambitious local chef Joel Monkman, and the menu will be subject to seasonal changes and the quality of each ingredient available at the time. Taste, as ever, is key. Collaborating with George and Joseph cheesemongers, Ham and Friends’ food hall brings together some of the best providers of UK artisan deli products. No longer do we have to rely on European imports and Spanish or Italian restaurants to get our charcuterie and fine cheese fix – we can find it in the

Grand Arcade, off Vicar Lane, whether you want to enjoy it there or stock up your fridge. We spoke to Ham and Friends’ owner, Claire Kitching, about the opening. “We’re so excited to open our second city centre venue,” she told us. “This new venture will offer a more restaurant-focussed experience, in the beautiful surroundings of the historic Grand Arcade.” “As well as our seasonal kitchen,” Claire goes on to say, “Ham and Friends hosts George and Joseph cheesemongers and the Yorkshire Wine School.” George and Joseph will be the city centre’s only walk-in cheese room, and Yorkshire Wine School will sit above Ham and Friends, offering wine tasting and wine courses. Ham and Friends is the perfect locale in which to while away a lost afternoon. Showcasing the best of British produce and innovative new British cuisine, alongside the European delicacies we know and love, we can’t think of an afternoon better spent. The Vada Pav is Mumbai’s favourite burger and Bundobust’s unique take on it consists of a fried spicy mashed potato ball coated in gram flour, served in a brioche bun with red and green chutney and hot green chilies. As a vegetarian burger, it really packs a punch and is a personal favourite of the Michelin-starred chefs. Other favourites include the incredibly moreish Bundobust okra fries. Northside The Guide

Get some retail therapy FROM LOCAL INDEPENDENT SHOPS TO MAJOR HIGH STREET NAMES, OUR REGION HAS A RANGE OF SHOPPING TO SUIT EVERYBODY.

LEEDS THE ARCADES Leeds is proud to house the 19th century Grand Arcade – one of the oldest shopping arcades in Leeds – as well as Thornton’s Arcade and Queen’s Arcade, where you’ll find a selection of shops and boutiques. Each has its own unique identity and atmosphere, so they bring real character to the city and provide a true haven for anyone who wants to shop somewhere different. BRIGGATE As one of Leeds’ main retail streets, Briggate is full to the brim with clothes stores, cafes and eateries. It was founded way back in 1207 and has since developed into the bustling area that we know today. The high-street chains dominate, but there is also great diversity here, ensuring there’s something to suit every shopper’s budget. THE HEADROW An impressive and largely pedestrianised street spanning half a mile, The Headrow is

one of Leeds’ primary shopping streets, holding many of the city’s cultural attractions. With St John’s Shopping Centre and The Core in the vicinity, it has a great number of big-name brands. KIRKGATE MARKET One of the largest indoor markets in Europe, Kirkgate is a haggler’s paradise for everything from fresh food and drink, to fashion and jewellery, flowers and haberdashery. Set in impressive Edwardian buildings, the market has a lively programme of events and hosts regular speciality markets. Still the city’s shopping mecca, the market now also plays host to Jamie’s Ministry of Food continuing the market’s tradition of bringing great quality food and drink to the people of Leeds. THE LIGHT The Light combines independent shops and high street retailers with a wide selection of places to eat and drink. There are stylish bars and cafes, a multi-screen cinema, a deluxe four-star hotel and a premier health and fitness club all under one roof. TRINITY LEEDS Leeds’ biggest and best shopping centre with 120 shops, bars, restaurants and cinema sat in the very heart of the city. The centre is a redevelopment of the former Trinity and Burton Arcades and the Leeds Shopping Plaza, which now features all of your high street favourites.

VICTORIA GATE Victoria Gate opened in October 2016 and was awarded ‘Best Shopping Centre’ in 2017 and is a modern interpretation of Victoria Quarter, paying homage to the surrounding architecture. Victoria Gate brings together brands such as Anthropologie, The White Company and Aspinal of London as well as being home to the largest John Lewis store outside London. Victoria Gate is also home to a medley of restaurants, bars and cafes. You’ve probably heard about the new super casino that’s opening too – well, it’s not open yet, but it is on the way. And, once complete, Victoria Gate Casino will cover a massive 4,645 square metres, making it the biggest casino in the north. VICTORIA QUARTER The beautiful architecture of the Victoria Quarter’s Grade II* arcades make a spectacular setting for a shopping spree. Located at the heart of Leeds city centre VQ is home to over 70 of the world's leading fashion and lifestyle brands.

HERE ARE ROCCA’S TOP TO TOE TIPS TO SEE YOU THROUGH THE SEASON! ith the summer event season fast approaching and invitations staring at us from our mantel pieces the “guest dress code” can seem like an impossible enigma to crack. 1

THE MAIN EVENT

Nowadays there are more options to choose from than a nice frock, this season the pant has been a key feature at Rocca and when teamed with a beautiful blouse, tailored top or sharp jacket (for evening do’s a cover up is none negotiable) you can create a modern take on event dressing. A Victoria Victoria Beckham pant suit is a fabulous option if you are considering this statement look, wear with a Zadig et Voltaire blazer and you are good to go! 2

THE TIME AFTER TIME

Since feminine florals are a perennial summer print, investing into this pretty trend is a great idea. British brand Goat is a go-to for wedding and race goers at Rocca and this season their floral silks come in a variety of silhouettes to suit all figures. Afraid of prints, then opt for a lesser statement trend with their equally stunning light wool crepe dresses, in a perfect pink pastel or bold beautiful red. You will be sure to pull a Goat dress out of your wardrobe summer after summer. 3

PREPPY ATTRACTIONS

There is nothing wrong with a stripe or an espadrille when it comes to the classic British Summer event, in fact if you can’t wear a Breton stripe to Henley then when can you wear one. This season Alexandra Wang’s take on this Anglo-French staple comes in the form of midi dresses and tees. Team tees with white denim for less formal dress codes or up the ante in the midi dress, both of which sit perfectly with Soludos espadrilles, a Guanabana straw pompom hat, a Smythe Duchess Blazer and or course a glass of PIMMS. 5

CATWALK CREATIONS

Celebrity style HOLLYWOOD COLOUR BLEND DEBUTS IN YORKSHIRE. he hottest new trend in hair colouring, Hollywood Colour Blend, is now availble in Yorkshire, and it’s attracting local celebrities as well as followers from far and wide. Ripponden-based salon, House of Creation is the first in the county to train in the new technique which is taking the industry by storm. Since launch it has announced a significant increase in business from old and new clients aspiring for the latest trend, which not only gives a new dimension in colour but also lasts a lot longer. Hollywood Colour Blend was created by celebrity hairdresser and make up artist Catherine Boden. Her new technique

T

has become a social media sensation with one of her biggest transformations being N Dubz and X Factor star, Tulisa. As well as celebrities she has clients flying in from Kuwait and Dubai to get the Hollywood Colour Blend look. The technique uses up to 15 toners and shades to create astonishing dimensions to the hair and because the blend technique gets closer to the natural colour, it can last for up to six months. Treatments can take up to six hours with prices from £250 upwards. Salon owner, Hayley Jennings, who herself is a part of the Racoon International Artistic Team lead by celebrity stylist Andrew Barton, said: “The Hollywood Colour Blend is a unique colouring technique designed to produce naturally blended hair colour with multiple tones, depth and highlights. The process has several stages to strategically place highlights and lowlights, blended colours, toners and glosses. “Because it is closer to the clients’ natural

colour, with blended highlights maintenance is low and colouring (top-ups) only needs to be done twice a year. We offer a very personalised service as clients can be in the salon for up to six hours. Everyone deserves to look like they are going to the Oscars and with the Hollywood Colour Blend they really do!” For further information, contact the salon on 01422 823329. www.houseofcreation.org.uk Twitter: @house_creation Facebook: @houseofcreationsalon Instagram: house_creation_salon

STUNNING SPACES ASHFIELD BUILDING GROUP IS BUILDING A REPUTATION FOR CREATIVE TRANSFORMATIONS. hen Ashfield Building Group’s energetic director, Brendon Quinlan visits a property for the first time he admits he doesn’t see walls, just possibilities. “It doesn’t matter how large or small a property, there is always scope for structural changes that can completely transform a home and the way space is used,” he says. “What I love most is helping people see past their existing layout to the aspirational living space beyond. It’s often a lot closer than they think.” It’s a passion that Brendon instils in the whole team and the reason Ashfield is fast becoming one of the area’s most highly recommended builders for extensions and refurbishment projects together with new build. The company is increasingly working with architects too, taking a collaborative approach where needed to help with design challenges and problem-solving during the build stage. Ashfield, based in Yeadon, has over 20 years of experience and is highly skilled in all major residential building and refurbishment works from living kitchens, extensions and loft conversions to basement rooms, barn conversions and even new build projects.

Where its reputation is really building is its skill in helping clients realise the full potential in their home, creating aspirational living spaces that not only enhance their lifestyle but also add value to the property. “Clients often come to us with their ideas but aren’t sure how they can be achieved,” says Brendon. “It’s the part of the process we enjoy most – sitting round their kitchen table with a cup of tea and discussing how we can make their vision a reality. We always try to go beyond their expectations. With creative ideas and clever build often the only limit is the imagination.” Brendon relishes a technical challenge and isn’t deterred by unusual layouts or difficult landscapes. “I hate being told no!” he admits. “Where there’s a will there’s often a way and we have the experience and expertise to know what is possible. “It’s so rewarding to be able to go back to a client and tell them that we’ve found a solution to open up even more space or create that additional feature.” The firm prides itself on a reliable, trustworthy and professional service and the competence and skill that Brendon and his team bring to all their work is backed by a lifetime guarantee. TRADITIONAL HOME TRANSFORMED INTO MODERN OPEN PLAN LIVING SPACE A large detached house in Scarcroft, north of Leeds, provided plenty of room for Phil Smith and his wife and two children but not the configuration or space they yearned for. “We really wanted to modernise the living space,” says Phil. “The layout didn’t work for modern living. We wanted a large open space where we could spend time as a family.” He was careful in selecting a building firm and had five visit, but felt that Ashfield director Brendon was the only one who took his ambitious ideas in his stride. “It gave us confidence that the company knew what to do and how to make it work,” Phil says. “That was really important as we were making major structural changes to the house.” Phil recalls ‘a lot of steel went in and walls came down” as the rear of the house was taken apart and rebuilt. A four metre

HILLSIDE NO OBSTACLE FOR DOUBLE STOREY EXTENSION

‘There’s always so much more that can be done to transform a property than people imagine.’ Brendon Quinlan, Ashfield Building Group MD

extension created a living area that is 10 metres square. “We now have a big, open plan family room, as well as retaining some individual rooms, which gives us a good blend of modern and traditional,” he says. “The luxury of space means we can spend time together doing different things but in the same part of the house.” One of the benefits he enjoys most is the light and airy feel created by a high vaulted ceiling, three sky lights and dramatic bi-

A steep hillside was seen as a challenge rather than an obstacle when Howard and Julia Shaw began thinking how they could extend their 2-bed cottage in Esholt. A friend recommended Ashfield Builders and “the next thing I knew, Brendon was sitting in our kitchen, chatting over how best to excavate into the hill,” remembers Howard. A month of digging and earthworks was required to create space for the ambitious double storey extension to the property, which is partly below ground level. Transformed into an L-shape, Howard says the couple’s cottage is now “much, much more interesting”. He adds: “It’s at least 60 per cent bigger and one of the features we enjoy the most is a 40ft living room; two walls of which are below ground. There’s so much you can do with space like that!” Howard and Julia also have a “very large” main bedroom with en-suite wetroom plus a new house bathroom in addition to the existing bedrooms. The couple enjoy relaxing in a hillside garden, accessed through French doors from their bedroom, which are mirrored below by doors from the living room leading out to a courtyard.

folding glass doors – but it almost didn’t go to plan. An architect had advised that the doors should be split in the centre by a supporting pillar - which was not what Phil had hoped for. Ashfield consulted with the council and was able to confirm that building regulations did in fact allow for a single span. Phil was delighted with the end result. “It’s really changed the feel from the rooms we had before and the space is great for entertaining too.”
