June Guide 2019

Refreshingly informal A TRIP TO HARROGATE OFFERS A GLORIOUS THROWBACK TO A MORE GENTLER TIME FOR CHRIS WILSON.

ook around any reasonably sized town or city and the sheer range of choice when it comes to dining options has grown hugely over the last couple of decades. From Indian and Thai to Spanish and Sicilian, foodies who crave variety have never had it so good. But if anything has been lost along the way it has been the comparative rarity of those lovely, quirky small-scale bistros that give any dining quarter extra character. Three cheers then to Hotel du Vin & Bistro for providing a menu and setting that is at once totally contemporary and also a glorious throwback to a gentler time and a more relaxed style of eating. Place in Harrogate and the atmosphere is friendly, refined, immaculate yet refreshingly informal. If you’re looking for a place to escape the pressures of life this will slow your heart rate as soon as you step over the threshold. Décor-wise less is definitely more here

with natural daylight, wooden floors and tables, comfortable leather chairs and soft lighting. There are framed photographs on the walls and tasteful green plants dotted around. If I ever joined a private members’ club I’d want it to look precisely like this. The bistro is open to all and the menu, a winning match of classic French and modern British dishes with the onus on seasonality, is a nice blend of crowdpleasing classics and individual touches. There’s a wonderful wine list too, with one of the best selections of wines by the glass I’ve seen and a very helpful and knowledgeable sommelier who we found extremely helpful in choosing the perfect taste to match our food choices.

Eating Out

Our dining experience began with a couple of classy starters that looked immaculate and packed a mean flavour punch to boot. My soft boiled Goosnargh duck egg with asparagus soldiers with brown crab mayonnaise (£8.50) was beautifully presented, the pure white-shelled egg with the top popped to reveal a perfect soft consistency, presented in a white egg cup on a white plate. I paused briefly to admire the scene before dipping the soldiers. A glass of New Zealand sauvignon blanc (£8.95) worked very well. An equally impressive food and wine combination was enjoyed by my friend Kathleen. Her pan-fried scallops served in the shell with saucisson, samphire, garlic and seaweed butter (£13.50) with a glass of Spanish Verdejo (£7.50) on the side was, I was assured, immaculate. For mains we were both hankering for some classic French bistro cuisine. My classic cassoulet (£16) really was a hearty casserole with a leg of confit duck on the bone, and big chunks of pancetta

and smoked Toulouse sausage. The white bean sauce was so packed with flavour it could have been a meal in itself. Definitely not a dish for the fainthearted but it delivered what I was looking for in spades. This was a dish that could definitely stand a robust red and a Zinfandel from the USA (£9.95) was the ideal choice. My companion’s classic spring lamb stew, navarin d’agneau (£16.50) made full use of prime Yorkshire Dales lamb shoulder and seasonal dishes. Served with fragrant rice and a glass of Sicilian Nero D’avola (£8.95) it was considerably lighter than my meal but equally full of flavour. We shared a bowl of green beans (£3.95). Desserts continued the high standards with a classic tarte au citron with raspberry sorbet (£6.50) and pineapple tarte tatin with coconut ice-cream (£6.95) providing the ideal combination of sweet and sharp tastes. Hotel du Vin may have 19 luxury boutique hotels across the UK but with such delicious unpretentious food served

in elegant surroundings the dining experience is as unique and special as any cutting edge independent. All in all, a fabulous meal with a setting to match. Hotel du Vin & Bistro Prospect Place, Harrogate HG1, 1LB Tel: 01423 608121 www.hotelduvin.com

Beach ready MORGAN CLARE LOOKS AT WHAT YOU SHOULD BE PACKING THIS SUMMER. here has this year gone? Yes it really is that time again and with summer holidays ahead our focus is on the all-important beachwear. We love planning the suitcase wardrobe where capsule is king. Choosing key colours and alternate cover-ups is the way to create a variety of looks that will take you through from sands to relaxed poolside dining. We’ve put together a few suggestions…

W

BLUE HUES – always look right against those cool waters. We love this on trend snakeskin print bikini from Heidi Klein. Add denim shorts (Citizens of Humanity) and a stripe oversize shirt (Heidi Klein) for that laid-back beach look.

NAUTICAL RED – This ruffle stripe bikini from Melissa Odabash looks fab against a tan. Need a cover-up to head to the bar? Vix provides a stylish kaftan that complements.

TURQUOISE TONES – White sands, blue skies and turquoise seas are the perfect backdrop to this leaf print bikini from Melissa Odabash. Throw on a beautiful embroidered kaftan from the same collection and add a pair of gold Ancient Greek slip-ons (they really are the master of sandals) and you’re good to go.

ALWAYS BLACK – The ultimate beach chic. Sleek and sophisticated in this Melissa Odabash swimsuit. For sundowners add this stylish off the shoulder cover up and for those who simply will not wear flats, finish with stunning wedges from Aquazzura. And don’t forget the hat.

June Guide 2019

Discover the ‘Black Mountain’ SPA TRAVEL, WORKING WITH CLASSIC COLLECTION HOLIDAYS, REVEAL THEIR HOT PICK FOR 2019 – MONTENEGRO. oasting beautiful beaches along its stunning coastline, Montenegro is home to verdant pine-clad mountains, crystal clear glacial lakes, and the Adriatic waters which lap against its historic walled coastal towns. A small but immensely beautiful European country, little-discovered Montenegro enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with over 200 sunny days a year, a 300km long, picturesque Adriatic coastline with more than 100 wonderfully unspoilt beaches, a rugged, mountainous interior, and a wealth of well-preserved historic walled towns, traditional villages and rural hamlets. Just to the south of Croatia, Montenegro, or Crna Gora (Black Mountain) as it is known locally, has a rich history with the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottoman Turks all leaving their mark, plus a distinctive Venetian influence in Budva, Herceg Novi and the UNESCO listed, and not to be missed, Kotor.

Where are the best places to visit in Montenegro?

Set in hugely picturesque surroundings, the region of Budva Riviera features some of the Adriatic coastline’s finest wide sandy bays and tranquil, hidden coves. With its backdrop of verdant, treeclad mountains, this long swathe of golden sand and pebbles is bordered by a picturesque promenade lined with restaurants, leading to the walled town of Budva. At the other end of the promenade, linked by a strip of pink sand, lies tiny St Stephen Island (Sveti Stefan), much revered by holidaying glitterati and, along the coast to the south merging into modern Becici, is the charming resort of Rafailovici. There are water sports available, a waterpark and, for nightlife, head to vibrant Budva. Budva has always enjoyed favour amongst the rich and famous and there

are chic cocktail bars, sophisticated restaurants and trendy nightclubs around the marina. The old town, set on a small peninsula, surrounded by 15th century ramparts features historic monuments, Venetian style buildings, piazzas and narrow cobbled streets filled with galleries and cafes. In summer, Budva becomes an open-air stage hosting numerous theatre and music festivals. For a quieter, more romantic location, choose the coastal town of Tivat. Enjoying a mountainous backdrop, our hotels allow guests to delve into this small town’s cultural heritage, with attractive architecture and summer showcases consisting of concerts and plays that visitors can enjoy. Classic Collection Holidays offers a selection of four and five-star hotels in Montenegro. Offering a diverse landscape to explore, this country provides a fantastic setting in which to spend time. Choose one of our three luxurious hotels, two in the lush area of Budva Riviera and two in the historical region of Tivat.

Whether you are looking for an escape with the family or a romantic getaway, this region offers something for everyone. To get more out of your holiday combine one of our hotels in Becici, near historic Budva, with Dubrovnik for a two-centre holiday. Cuisine

For a relatively small country Montenegro has a wide range of culinary offerings as numerous historic occupiers have left their culinary marks. The results are a fascinating fusion of quite exotic flavours; always using high quality, fresh, often organic, produce. There is AustroHungarian influenced goulash and satarash, Italian pasta and polenta dishes, The town of Perast on Kotor lake

and moussaka, burek and baklava; all traced back to Turkey. Along the Adriatic coast the emphasis is on a healthy, light diet with delicious freshly caught fish and seafood, lots of extra virgin olive oil and an abundance of fresh fruits. Further inland cuisine is more hearty and wholesome, the exceptionally fertile lake region is home to the country’s wine production, and Lake Skadar is well renowned for its freshwater fish. What to do?

In addition to the stunning coastline, Montenegro boasts a wealth of sights and historic attractions with medieval walled towns, traditional villages, churches and monasteries. Don’t miss UNESCO listed Kotor, in its spectacular fjord-like bay, which features Venetian architecture, a 17th century clock tower, museums and 12th century St Triphun Cathedral. A short distance away in Boka Bay, Perast is a beautiful old town with frequent taxi boat transfers to Our Lady of the Rock (Gospa od Skrpjela), a picturesque little island with an amazing church and museum. And just 20 minutes’ drive from the coast in its own beautiful national park, Lake Skadar, is the largest expanse of water in the Balkans. Another of the four national parks, breathtaking Durmitor, is set along the Tara river canyon; of glacial origin, it features one of the deepest gorges in

Tivat – from the sea

Europe where clear lakes nestle in dense forests themselves home to bear, wolf, wild boar, chamois, numerous bird species and a range of rare flora. Not surprisingly, Montenegro is fantastic for walking, hiking and mountain biking and there is also exhilarating white-water rafting and sea kayaking possibilities. Numerous coastal watersports include water skiing and wake boarding, and hotels generally offer various sports amenities including tennis courts and fitness rooms. In addition, there are four national parks to explore including Lake Skadar, the largest expanse of water in the Balkans, and Durmitor, set along the Tara river canyon with a fantastic range of flora and fauna, dense forests and clear lakes. June Guide 2019

The countdown begins... WITH TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB, COURTEENERS AND NILE ROGERS & CHIC ALL CONFIRMED AS HEADLINERS – PLUS PLENTY MORE – SHEFFIELD’S TRAMLINES FESTIVAL IS SHAPING UP FOR ANOTHER SENSATIONAL SUMMER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Tramlines

ramlines 2019 has a lot to live up to. The inner city Sheffield festival, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2018, relocated to the city’s Hillsborough Park last year and was an unswerving success. Despite the trams choosing that weekend to go on strike, the sun shone, music played, ale was drunk, street food was

scoffed and a good time was had by all. So the big question is, how do Tramlines top it? Can 2019 be better than last year? Here’s hoping. “Following on from the amazing party that was our tenth birthday, we’ve been working hard to make the festival better and to find artists that we’re excited about,” said Tramlines operations director Timm Cleasby. “I think we have some great artists that span generations. I can’t wait, it’s going to be awesome and I hope everyone will join us for Sheffield’s biggest party.” Confirmed artists for the festival, which will be held on the weekend of 19-21 July, include headliners Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners and Nile Rogers & Chic. Expect crowd-pleasing tracks such as ‘What You Know’, ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and ‘Everybody Dance’ respectively, when these acts take to the Tramlines main stage. Other highlight performances will come from Wales’ finest, the Manic Street Preachers, with an impressive 13

albums-worth of material; Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, with his unique, soulful tones that appear in a fresh new setting on latest single ‘Giant’ with Calvin Harris; the highly anticipated return of indie outfit Doves after a nine-year hiatus; Madchester scene leaders the Happy Mondays; Sheffield heavyweights Reverend and the Makers; Miles Kane; Circa Waves, Lewis Capaldi; hedonistic South London four-piece Shame; and Peter Hook and the Light who will be performing New Order’s ‘Technique’ and ‘Republic’ live plus Joy Division material. Continuing the not-to-be-missed acts is the Paul Weller-mentored The Rifles, Britpop rock band Sleeper – who are set to return with their first album in almost two decades – and the Everly Pregnant Brothers, who’ll bring their hilarious spoof covers. The ‘Just Added’ list includes Johnny Marr – best known as the Smiths guitarist and co-songwriter (alongside Morrissey) – and well-known Radio1 DJ, Annie Mac.

Returning to Tramlines for the second year is Tom Grennan who played the Leadmill tent last year, with tracks from his hit album ‘Lighting Matches’. The three-day festival will also see local talent with the Sheffield brotherduo Drenge, as well as Good Cop Bad Cop – the new project from Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders and Joe Carnall. Also performing across the four stages will be post-punk group The Futureheads, BBC Sound Of list winners Jade Bird and The Japanese House and Becky Hill, known for a number of chart-toppers, including collaborations with Rudimental, MK, and Little Smiz. Further confirmed is BBC Sound Of 2019 nominated Sea Girls; Liverpool four-piece Clean Cut Kid; Sports Team whose new track ‘M5’ was premiered by Annie Mac on Radio 1, and Easy Life who made it into Radio X’s Best New Bands for 2019 list. The breaking talent list continues with whenyoung, Another Sky, Anteros, Bloxx, Hey Charlie, Bedroom High Club, and flying the flag for Sheffield and South Yorkshire, Casey Lowry, Oddity Road, The Reytons, The Wired, The Seamonsters, Cora Pearl, and Children Of The State. > Continued on next page

Tramlines

June Guide 2019 Laugh it up While the music will always take centre stage at Tramlines, and why wouldn’t it when you’ve got the likes of Chic & Nile Rogers, The Courteeners and Manic Street Preachers? But last year’s inaugural comedy line-up, hosted by the Leadmill, proved to be a huge draw. So Tramlines has decided to do it again. Topping the bill on Saturday night (20 July) is Reginald D Hunter. The Georgia-born comic is currently celebrating 20 years as a comedian living and performing in the UK with a huge 40-date national tour where, in his southern drawl, he’ll have audiences keeling over with his distinctive take on race, sexuality and politics. You’ll probably recognise Reginald from TV appearances on Have I Got News For You and the BBC2 series documenting the growth of American popular song, Reginald D Hunter’s Songs of the South and its follow up, Songs of the Border. Headlining on Sunday is stand-up comedian, actor and performance poet, Phill Jupitus. The former team captain of Never Mind the Buzzcocks has a careerlong connection with the music industry. From touring universities supporting bands such as Billy Bragg, the Style Council and The Housemartins, directing the Brit Awards-nominated video for Bragg’s Sexuality in 1991, to DJing numerous times as Glastonbury, Jupitus is the perfect fit for Tramlines. Next comes Shappi Khorsandi, who established a name for herself in 2006 with a sell-out Edinburgh show, Asylum Speaker, and has since gone on to appear on countless TV and radion shows including Mock The Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats amongst others. The remaining line-up features a mix of in-demand and conquering comedians. These include the situation comic and all-round entertainer Andre Vincent whose 30-year career cites writing credits for Channel 4’s The 11 O’clock Show and co-creating The Late Edition. He is joined by fellow Brit Alistair Barrie, a regular at London’s world-famous Comedy Store and a core member of their weekly topical Cutting Edge team. The laughs continue to roll with the Australian born/UK-based, Thomas Green, who’ll deliver his engagingstorytelling style of comedy, which combined with his quick-witted exchanges and improv, means audience members at Tramlines should think twice

about heckling! Also flying the Aussie flag is Daniel Muggleton who’ll bring to the proceedings his ‘hilarious’ observations as reviewed at the Edinburgh Festival. Tramlines Festival is also announcing another batch of new talent for the 2019 line-up. The latest additions include; Brighton four-piece, Yonaka, and postgrime pop singer, Georgia, both who’ve received high accolades from The Guardian as ‘One To Watch’; West Yorkshire’s Skinny Living who have supported Jake Bugg; Irish rock band, Otherkin, and indie band Cassia whose talents were affirmed with a Radio 1 BBC Introducing Track of the Week for their 2017 single, ‘100 Times Over’.

Whilst the Tramlines line up gets bigger each year, it remains seriously good value for money. Weekend tickets have sold quicker than ever and are now on sixth tier and priced from £79.50 plus booking fee for all three days. VIP upgrade tickets are available for an additional £50 granting access to the private VIP area situated right next to the main stage with private bars, food stalls and toilets. Under 12s go for free. For full ticketing info including monthly payment plans, visit www.tramlines.org.uk. Hillsborough Park is in the north of Sheffield and is easily accessible from junction 36 of the M1 – about a 45-minute drive from Leeds. If you’re travelling by train, it’ll take around 20 minutes to get there via public transport (bus or tram). Summer planning

Nigel Eaton’s top tips will have your garden looking splendid this summer

TEN THINGS TO TACKLE IN YOUR GARDEN THIS SUMMER. BY NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF RHS GARDEN HARLOW CARR SHOP & PLANT CENTRE. 1. Dead-head roses as the first flowers fade, cut back slightly to encourage new growth where the new flowers will develop. Top-dress with a balanced rose fertiliser such as Toprose. 2. As bearded irises finish flowering, lift the clumps if they are congested and split. Replant the rhizomes just on the surface facing the sun with the fan of leaves behind. This ensures the rhizomes get baked which encourages flowering. Feed with high potash feed such as Vitax Q4. 3. Bedding plants in baskets and planters will need dead-heading and if there are any gaps in the display, push some nasturtium seeds into the compost which will quickly germinate and fill any holes in the display. 4. Peg down some of the runners off strawberry plants to get young plants for next year. Use 10cm pots with good compost, set the small runner plant on the surface of the compost and peg

84 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

down with a piece of bent wire. When rooted in 6-8 weeks, cut the plant off the mother plant. Strawberry plants need to be changed on a three-yearly basis so this is a good method of keeping your stock productive. 5. Prune June flowering shrubs such as weigela and philadelphus when they have finished flowering to encourage growth that the flowers will be bourne on next year, top dress as with roses with a high potash feed. 6. Put conservatory plants outside in a shady spot for a holiday whilst the weather is warm, this then gives you chance to clean the plants of any pests and also clean the conservatory. 7. In the greenhouse it is time to take semi-ripe and stem cuttings whilst the shoots are in full growth. Use rooting compound on all but geranium cuttings. 8. Harvest potatoes when the plants start to flower, store them in a dry dark place, you can now get “potato bags” which

exclude light from the stored tubers but allow air to circulate round the crop to stop any rot setting in. 9. Apples and pears will have had their “June drop” but you still might need to do some more thinning to get the best fruit. If there is a cluster of fruit always take the “king” or central fruit-let first to get the rest to develop. 10. Sow some quick flowering annuals such as phacelia, nemophila or linaria in gaps where you have cut back early flowering herbaceous plants so you have colour in August and September.
