PLAY. DISCOVERY. GROWTH. INTRODUCING ROUNDHAY’S UNIQUE NEW CHILDREN’S NURSERY. brand new exclusive day nursery has opened its doors in Roundhay. 22 Street Lane Nursery offers an exceptional learning experience for children aged from three months to five years. Situated on one of the most iconic streets in Leeds, 22 Street Lane Nursery delivers something very unique to families. The nursery offers parents a reassuring, safe and secure setting with state-of-the-art technology that requires fingerprint recognition on entry. Spacious rooms provide a calm and joyful atmosphere, equipped with natural furnishings and high quality toys; the extraordinary garden features an outdoor tipi classroom, chicken coop, mud kitchen, outdoor toilets, a performance stage, as well as vegetable patches and a potting shed for cultivating plants and herbs. A wholesome, varied and nutritious menu has been designed by a top children’s nutritionist using locallysourced, quality ingredients, alongside the produce grown in the garden by the children themselves.

On joining the nursery, each family is visited at home, ensuring that children are supported to build secure relationships with staff from the very start. Children are viewed as competent, curious and active learners who are excited by connecting to the world around them. The dedicated, qualified and experienced team actively encourage children in their play and exploration, supporting their natural curiosity and thirst for learning. Nursery founder, Caroline Pollard, says: “Each room operates above the required staff ratio, meaning that children can have the extra attention they need during their early development.” “Our aspiration is to become the UK’s leading nursery provider delivering outstanding provision and excellence in early years’ care. The nursery cherishes the relationship between children, practitioners and parents, influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach to preschool teaching. “We are delighted with the positive feedback received from parents, the interest to date has been overwhelming and continues at pace.”

To book a viewing, please contact the nursery via: info@22streetlanenursery.co.uk You can also connect through social media channels, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. Call 03330 43 22 22.

STRONG STUFF CHILDREN WHO GO TO INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS DEVELOP MORE MENTAL TOUGHNESS, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH.

any parents select an independent school for their children because they believe it will give them the best possible chance of academic achievement... and there are plenty of success stories in our region to back this up, with youngsters receiving outstanding GCSE and A level successes way above national averages. However it isn’t all about exam success. When it comes to turning out well-rounded individuals, capable of dealing with setbacks and open to new challenges, pupils in independent schools also achieve outstanding results. They are controlled, committed, confident and like a challenge, new research from the Independent Schools Council reveals. The quantitative research by leading psychometric test publisher AQR International shows pupils at independent schools have good attainment, wellbeing and behaviour and are more resilient, better at dealing with setbacks and more open to learning as a result. Using a mental toughness model called

MTQ48, the study - An Analysis of Mental Toughness at UK Independent Schools included 9,000 pupils of all ages from 58 schools in England and Scotland. This test, which defines mental toughness as the ‘mindset that every person adopts in everything they do' gave an overall score of 4.26, higher than a figure of 3.94 recorded across state schools. Set across four categories – the 4Cs – the

highest score was recorded in confidence (4.47), a result also seen in state schools (4.49). While scoring lower, control (4.16), commitment (4.34) and challenge (4.19) were all higher than in state school pupils*, significantly so for commitment and challenge. *Results from 32,000 state school pupils taken from data held by AQR

Gateways School As most parents with children nearing or of school age know, we are currently faced with a shortage of state school places in Leeds. The continuation of this trend can only lead to a widening of the gap between state and independent education. With the primary school ‘black hole’ in North Leeds looking set to expand, perhaps it’s time to make Gateways your first choice school. If you are looking for a school which focuses on your child as an individual, which achieves excellent results and value-added scores and where specialist teaching is introduced as early as age seven, then look no further. Call to arrange your personal visit to Gateways. Harewood, Leeds, LS17 9LE Tel: 0113 288 6345 www.gatewaysschool.co.uk

Bradford Grammar School “If we get it right, and BGS does, education will kindle an intellectual and emotional response from students, encourage insight and curiosity, and provide the tools to make a valuable contribution to society.” BGS Headmaster, Simon Hinchliffe BGS provides every opportunity for its Junior, Senior and Sixth Form pupils to embrace academic, sporting and creative excellence within an aspirational, caring environment in which happiness is the key to an individual’s success. They are conveniently located off the Ring Road at Weetwood Lane, yet sat in beautiful grounds providing all the outdoor space required for children to play in a safe and secure environment. The school boasts of fantastic wrap round care facilities, excellent teaching standards, on site swimming pool and small class sizes. Breast surgery that can change your life WHEN WE FOLLOW UP WITH PREVIOUS BREAST SURGERY PATIENTS AT NUFFIELD HEALTH YORK HOSPITAL THEY ARE KEEN TO TELL US ABOUT THEIR NEWFOUND LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM. WE ARE OFTEN TOLD THAT THE SURGERY BROUGHT A SMILE BACK TO THEIR FACE AND THAT IN MANY CASES IT LITERALLY ‘CHANGED THEIR LIFE’ he story below highlights why carefully choosing your surgeon and the hospital that you have your procedure in can bring about life-changing results. Emily, 17, (name changed) was seen at the Nuffield Hospital York by Mr K Munot, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, accompanied by her mother, with concern regarding the very significant asymmetrical development of her breasts. Understandably this was very embarrassing for her and had a huge impact on her confidence and social life. On examination she was diagnosed with Poland’s syndrome, which is a rare congenital abnormality with lack of development of the chest wall muscles on one side along with a significantly underdeveloped breast on that side, with normal breast development on the unaffected side. After careful counselling she

T

underwent surgery to both breasts including different size and shape implants to both breasts along with a breast lift/mastopexy procedure. All her surgery was done in a single operation using a minimal scar technique with a single night stay in her own private en-suite bedroom within the hospital ward. She was overjoyed with the results of surgery and the symmetry achieved. Both Emily and her mother felt that the surgery had given a tremendous boost to her confidence and that within weeks Emily had gone from being constantly depressed to now being a lively and outgoing young girl. In her mum’s words: “Thank you Mr Munot for your wonderful expertise and bringing back the smile and confidence to our daughter.” Mr Munot is an experienced surgeon who specialises solely in the field of breast surgery

including breast cancer, reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery such as breast augmentation, breast reduction, mastopexy (breast lift) and surgery for gynaecomastia (excess male breast tissue). He is also an expert in breast reconstruction following breast cancer and uses a variety of techniques including implants and latissimus dorsi flap, including newer techniques with implant reconstruction such as autologous dermal sling and acellular dermal matrix.

To make an appointment for an initial consultation with Mr Munot please contact the Nuffield Health York Hospital appointments line on 01904 898 846 or email york.enquiries@nuffieldhealth.com www.nuffieldhealth.com/consultants/ mr-kailas-munot

THE COCKTAIL EXPERIENCE IS BACK. n 3 March,The Cocktail Experience returns to the city for another evening of unashamed indulgence and cocktail making from the city’s best bars and restaurants. Hot on the heels of last year’s blistering sell-out debut success, the creators of The Cocktail Experience have not rested on their laurels and have tweaked part two to guarantee complete cocktail perfection. Once again residing in the stunning event space, Aspire, the evening will play host to 18 of the city’s biggest and best bar brands, who will be sending their team of expert mixologists and bar wizards armed to the teeth with premium liquor for your drinking pleasure. The event aims to showcase the eclectic spirit of the Leeds bar scene, with a diverse

range of brands uniting as one to present world class cocktails ranging from classic to bespoke, to the weird, the wonderful and the downright daring. The Alchemist, Pintura, Manahatta and Revolucion de Cuba are just four of the names returning to the first event of 2017, which will also see five shiny new bar brands added to the canon. On top of that, Moet ICE will be bringing the bubbles and taking over the upstairs bar of Aspire. Guests can also expect the crème de la crème when it comes to entertainment, with guest DJs dropping some choice cuts befitting of the glittering occasion. The evening is once again brought to you by Hairy Lemon and Pink Gorilla, who have rapidly become one of the leading PR,

marketing and event agencies in Leeds. Jordan Odu, director of Pink Gorilla, had this to say about the forthcoming event: “After the huge success of our sell-out event last October, bringing back The Cocktail Experience was a no-brainer. We had some incredible feedback from the first event and as a result we’ve made part two even bigger. With additional brands and even more independent bars participating this year, the event has become a great platform for the city’s independents to showcase their talent in cocktail making.” Looking to celebrate an occasion, entertain clients or simply shake it up VIP style? No problem. Upgrade to a Golden Ticket and you can beat the crowds with queue jump, two cocktails and a welcome glass of Moet champagne.

Confetti

Your wedding, your way Will your big day be traditionally white or wild and wacky? Rachel Martin has got some ideas...

R

ecent years have seen brides-to-be go crazy for shabby chic and eclectically bright weddings, and, as we greet 2017, its clear couples are much more interested in going down the aisle their own way. Your wedding should represent your style and personality, and, while there are many thousands of themes to choose from, we’ve rounded up some ultra-romantic inspiration - from rustic chic to gilded glam - to help you find your wedding style.

FESTIVAL If you want a wedding that’s entertainment-focused, informal and all about fun, food and flower crowns then a festival-themed wedding is perfect for you. More and more couples are holding festival weddings – many stretching their celebrations out over a whole weekend, with guests camping at the festival site. From live music and performance to delicious food and drink, festival style nuptials throw the rulebook away in terms of format and allow a bride and groom to really express their personalities. And, if your guest list is large, it’s a great way to make the most of your budget and still give the guests a great time.

Eco Chic

With the abundance of locally sourced cuisine, organic wines, and repurposed materials available, couples can reduce their carbon footprints without reducing style. Easy trades, like swapping plastic for biodegradable dishes and new jewelry for used and borrowed items, can dramatically reduce the waste output (not to mention expenses) of a big occasion. For couples looking to infuse a little “globetrotting philanthropist” flair, consider booking a glamping honeymoon, or invite your guests to make a charity donation in lieu of gifts.

40 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Metallic Metallic is the new black, or white in the wedding world, with trending tones including silver, copper and rose quartz. Named Pantone’s colour of the year 2016, the blush-hued metallic isn't just for jewellery, it's a softer way to incorporate sparkle and works well when mixed with a light colour palette – making it the perfect colour to accent an outdoor spring affair. With the right (light) touch, subtle metallics can transform invitations, place settings, and even flowers from understated details to sublime showpieces.

Seaside Whether inspired by soft golden sands or an afternoon spent sailing, let your love for the ocean inspire your destination or nautical themed wedding. Picture pastel colours, a beautiful arch in front of the ocean, and the sound of waves lapping against the shore as you say your “I dos”. You may not be lucky enough to consider a destination wedding, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring the beach to you. Deep oranges and pinks paired with large and bright tropical foliage, like White Star and Bismarkia, will give the event an exotic feel. And why not go all out and kick off your shoes - barefoot is where it’s at for this wedding theme.

Botanical

A twist on the much-loved rustic theme, this trend can be a beautiful choice. Fill your reception room with foliage, berries and fur cones, and, for the nature lovers out there, a wooden arch decorated with wildflowers. This is also a great way to make your wedding seasonal, as you’ll be taking inspiration from your surroundings. Think handpicked-style bouquets and wooden stump table centres, topped with tea lights and flowers in little bottles. Candle lanterns also create a mysterious atmosphere, and strings of fairy lights hanging from a big ol’ tree are super romantic and high impact (just don’t forget the bug spray).

Art Deco

This popular theme is showing no signs of going anywhere anytime soon. Popularised by Downton Abbey and The Great Gatsby, the 1920’s are a constant source of wedding inspiration. Whether you go all-out and amp up the atmosphere with vintage-inspired gown, posh getaway car and venue, or just let it influence your decor, this is the ultimate glamorous scheme.

VINTAGE MINIMALISM Brides-to-be are turning to clean lines, simple florals, and understated décor as a respite from the oversaturation of wedding customizations. Green and white accents are all you need for a romantic atmosphere, while a simple wedding dress offers a chic counterpoint to the crystal-heavy ballgown.

Fantasy

If you have a passion for something very particular, whether it’s Harry Potter, video games, Alice in Wonderland or zombies – why not make it your theme? What wedding guest wouldn’t love to be immersed in a fantasy vision for the day?

Winter Wonderland

A winter wonderland motif allows you to recreate the magic of the frosty season, no matter what the climate is like outside. Dangling crystals, frosted branches, white florals, glowing candles and even fake snow can all help you evoke the feel of an elegant wintertime wedding.

The vintage wedding trend is still going strong and it’s no surprise – there’s just something oh-so-romantic about adding old-worn items and antiques to your big day. Many couples opt to include family heirlooms within the décor, giving a personal touch to their retro wedding. Love vintage but crave a bit more edge? Crank things up to 11 with a rockabilly or disco-themed extravaganza, featuring kitschy décor, funky desserts and a live band.

BOHO Characterized by details like unfinished wood, Mason jars, lanterns, twine and natural colors, the rustic boho theme brings a warm and down-to-earth vibe to any wedding. A repurposed barn is the ideal setting, and, a luxurious medley of eclectic global and woodland motifs define the romantic luxe style. Rich, jewel-tone organza and lacy, floral-inspired table covers create an exquisite backdrop for mercury glass vessels, gilded candle holders, beaded chandeliers and abundant florals nestled in lush natural mosses. Surround yourself in the warm white glow of candlelight, fairy light, and draping curtains to complete this opulent look

Confetti

Your moment Rachel Martin looks at bridal styles you should be wearing in 2017.

W

hen it comes to wedding dresses, classic white gowns – often strapless – have stood the test of time, and aren’t giving way to draped silhouettes anytime soon. But in the same vein, we’ve seen plenty of bridal inspiration in unlikely places in recent years, and in terms of ‘hot’ bridal fashion in 2017, sheer dresses, plunging necklines and modern minimalist styles are

42 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

having a major moment (get ready to bare that décolletage 2017 brides). Off-the-shoulder wedding dresses continued to reign supreme, also big, boudoir and lingerie-inspired looks, 3-D appliques, and heavy beading that harkens back to the opulence of Downton Abbey. And good news for brides hoping to pull off any of those looks, these elegantly sexy trends are actually very wearable. So even if you want to rock a ‘naked’ dress, you can do so without scandalising your guests. 2017 also welcomes some new wedding dress trends: ruffles, feathers, and tiered skirts, with flutter sleeve styles and billowing bishop sleeves also making an appearance. Shoulders bared in lace and long sleeved styles, are also making a trend perfect for winter brides. The off-the-shoulder trend so ubiquitously seen on the ready-to-wear runways, has finally trickled its way down to the bridal world, too. The design can be seen in both minimal and ornate styles; A-line gowns with a subtly shorter front hemlines and bodice cut outs and ultra-romantic offthe-shoulder cuffs with softly tied bows. From ballgowns to modern column dresses and bohemian sheaths, almost every wedding

dress can be seen with its off-the-shoulder version. Long sleeves will continue to trend (you can thank Kate Middleton for that), but this year’s sleeves have a little something extra. Riding the ready-to-wear popularity of bell sleeves, wedding dresses are given the same treatment with pouffy bishop sleeves. Toppers are also set to be a big hit this season, making their mark in the form of capelets, bomber jackets (particularly gorgeous in fur detailing), boleros, and ponchos. In terms of colours, the arena is wide open, and while blush, rose quartz, serenity and mint are still having a moment, 2017 is set to be dominated by darker colours. Brides should look to lines of deep reds, charcoal and black, for modern gothic looks that are equal parts moody and romantic.

Something different

The dress might be the centrepiece of your wedding but what about other aspects? Rachel Martin looks at venues, colours, cakes and more.

A

fter years of vintage wedding décor and elegant rustic venues, couples will be looking for something different in 2017 – something with a little more edge. Today’s couples want a wedding that will blow their guests away, and one of the key elements to an unforgettable event is the choice of venue. Any place with a large plot of land or a distinct building – or both – will allow couples to really personalise their wedding and help tell their unique story. But if it’s not practical to book a unique wedding venue, lofts and tents give couples more room to get creative. Or a rooftop space with a jawdroppingly fantastic view. Warehouses are also set to be huge – glammed up with candles, fairy lights and lots of gorgeous floral arrangements. Picture an industrial storeroom decked out with ornate, over-the-top centerpieces and set aglow with strands of twinkling lights and candles. Blush rose, to be exact, remains the “it” wedding colour, dubbed a “now and forever” shade, because it’s both trendy and timeless. Brides are also set to continue to embrace copper, rose gold and pewter because they’re so versatile. Not only do they work with other colours for a look that’s at once relaxed and fun, they are ideal tones for a black-tie evening. Peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, dahlias and other soft-petal blooms are the toprequested flowers from coast to coast — and for good reason. They epitomise romance, and

Why not get married on a rooftop?

peonies, in particular are in high demand. Loose rose petals, used as a garland or runner atop tables or scattered among floating candles, are another trend that’s coming on strong. At the other end of the trend spectrum, flowering plants like king- and pink-ice protea, along with assorted bold tropical blooms and small potted plants, lend a dose of stateliness for brides who want arrangements that feel natural and organic – yet elegant. Continuing the flower power in wedding food, sugar flowers are set to remain Warehouses are also set to be huge – glammed up with candles, fairy lights and lots of gorgeous floral arrangements

incredibly popular, with brides also using flowers to decorate naked cakes, a rising trend where no icing is used, but flowers and fruit for decoration instead. It was a wedding trend in 2016, but it’s still going to be going strong in 2017 – getting creative with unusual wedding catering, whether it’s a fun food truck or a themed food station. The Champagne and oyster bar is simply stunning – a treat for the eyes as much as the palate. Similarly the doughnut deli, a sugary wall of joy, is a popular choice for late night munchies. Dessert tables are the hottest new wedding trend and they’re a great idea if you’re looking for a creative way to display your wedding cake. Why not stir up some competition with your guests by asking them to participate in a ‘bake-off’ style challenge? That way you get lots of desserts and your guests will enjoy the show. Gin is really having a moment too, and it’s not going to go away. The world’s hippest spirit works as a base in so many cocktails, cementing its status as a wedding must-have for 2017.

LEFT: Six months on from the hurricane devastation in the Bahamas, Helena revisited at Easter with sweet treats for the children

From basement to Bollinger Helena Briden spoke to Northside about life at one of Yorkshire’s grandest estates…

C

arlton Towers is many things: an extraordinary house, a country estate teeming with wildlife, one of Yorkshire’s true hidden gems. But it isn’t so much a stately home as it is simply the home of Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan Howard, whose gift is to make everyone feel like part of the family. Here, general manager Helen Briden speaks to Northside about life at one of Yorkshire’s premium wedding and events venues.

United FC, where I won the esteemed Leeds Live it, Love it Award. Next came a four-year stint in consultancy, and that’s when I was approached by Carlton Towers. With such an extensive background across the board, they saw me as a good fit for general manager, and the rest is history I suppose. I’d actually visited in 2007 and remember thinking “wow, what an amazing place this would be to work” – it almost felt like fate.

What lead you to Carlton Towers? After an all-encompassing career in corporate sales and marketing, I needed a sabbatical. So I took the opportunity to train as a scuba instructor in Florida, before moving to the Bahamas to make it a full-time career. However, I soon found such a drastic lifestyle change challenging and elected to move to Canada, where I was headhunted by the owner of a dive shop. After surviving (just) their coldest winter in 44 years, the Bahamas called once again, and it was there that I set up my own event management business. After eight rewarding years, though, it was time to return to the UK, where I spent five years heading up the conferencing and events department at Leeds

What is a typical working day like? There’s no ‘typical’ day. We’re not a hotel, we’re a private family home, and therefore only open at certain times – weddings, afternoon teas, corporate events etc. One minute I could be down in the boiler room dealing with the central heating and the next I could be upstairs conducting a Bollinger champagne reception, it is a very unique role. What has been the highlight of your career so far? I volunteered my time in the aftermath of hurricane Wilma in the Bahamas, working around the clock to bring immediate relief. This was a very challenging but extremely rewarding part of my life.

What do you enjoy most about your job? Seeing the smiles on people faces as I stand on the doorstep the morning after a wedding (knowing we’ve made their dreams come true) is so rewarding. Tell us about Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan Howard. Lord and Lady Fitzalan Howard are a joy. They leave me to run Carlton Towers day in day out, but they also love to get involved. Recently we had a corporate event take over the house and after a day shooting they invited the guests to their private quarters for drinks. There are no airs and graces at Carlton Towers, just a relaxed Yorkshire conviviality. What advice would you give to anyone thinking of a similar career? It’s probably the hardest trade to go into, but certainly the most rewarding. You have to be able to multitask, especially when part of a small team. It is an ever-changing industry that you have to adjust in line with, especially in event management, where you’re tasked with making someone’s idea/concept a reality. You must be committed.

Confetti CHIFFON It may seem like the kind of dress reserved for bridesmaids, but there are plenty of chiffon dresses out there this season ranging from understated to glam. Choose a long and straight classy cut or a more playful midi dress, which will be easier to dance in later. And when it comes to the bodice, ruffles and folds add interesting textures, whilst lace suits almost everyone and beautifully disguises parts of our arms we may not want to show off.

Women

Smart or casual? Phoebe Seymour has the answers to your wedding outfit dilemmas.

Be a well-dressed

GUEST S

FLORAL As a classic summer wedding theme, you can’t go wrong with a floral dress. Choose a fitted or floaty cut to suit your shape and style, just make sure it isn’t too short or revealing. Pick out one of the key colours and couple it up with a suit jacket and/or heels and clutch bag of the same shade. If you are going to a more traditional wedding, you may want to wear a matching hat or fascinator.

48 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

hopping for a dress or suit to attend a wedding can be tricky. You want to look smart and stand out, but at the same time, you don’t want to look so good that you upstage the bride and groom. This leaves most of us in limbo between too dressy and too casual. But if you are attending a spring or summer wedding, don’t be afraid to be playful with your outfit. Here are some of the key themes to bear in mind when choosing a wedding outfit for spring/summer 2017.

JUMPSUIT More and more forward-thinking brides are opting for jumpsuits instead of the traditional big white dress, so why can’t the guests? Choose a plain pastel colour (pink is on trend this year) with gorgeous detail, but avoid white, leave that to the bride. If black is more your colour, look out for a jumpsuit with a pattern or a floral design.

NEUTRAL When it comes to weddings in warmer climates, opt for a cooler cream or beige suit. A more relaxed open collar shirt or coupled with a cravat (rather than a tie) work best, but check the dress code at your particular wedding. Brogues in brown or another neutral colour work better than the classic black shoe in this instance.

CHEQUERED Like the floral dress, a chequered suit is always great for a spring or summer wedding. Go for a lighter shade and material. Thinner square outlines or full-on checks are both acceptable, but avoid full on tartan (unless you are going to a Scottish wedding). Depending on how casual you are allowed to go, try a plain blue suit and a blue and white chequered shirt.

Men COLOURFUL TIE If you feel more comfortable in a more traditional and darker coloured three-piece suit, why not brighten it up with a colourful tie or cravat? Choose a block colour tie in pink (on trend this year), red or a lower key colour such as purple. When it comes to cravats, you can be a little more playful with patterns. Paisley is both a stylish and safe option.

Quirky and unique An increasing number of couples are choosing The Engine Shed as the venue for their wedding – and with good reason.

O

nce a hidden gem in the heart of Wetherby, The Engine Shed has fast established itself as one of the market town’s premier entertainment venues. Since re-opening in 2012, this unique Grade II listed building has played host to live bands, comedy nights, concerts, a beer festival, Northern Soul nights, charity balls and a roster of tribute acts and famous names as it steadily builds on a burgeoning reputation. Now, five years on from breathing new life into what must surely be one of Wetherby’s most quirky of venues, owners Alex and Kay Hogg are starting to make a name for themselves in a completely different market. Year on year, an increasing number of couples are choosing The Engine Shed as the venue for their wedding. “We are really proud when couples choose us to host their wedding for them,” Kay said. “Your wedding day should be the best day of your life and we see it as an honour when people trust in us to make sure their day is a magical one. “We are a unique venue, one which has wonderful facilities and which also has that quirky touch that people really seem to like. The mezzanine balcony, the exposed wooden beams and the period decor all make for a wonderful place to take your vows.” It is easy to see why so many people have taken the plunge at The Engine Shed. The stunning interior boasts a capacity of

over 450 people, and there are two bars and two dance floors complete with superb sound and lighting systems. Any day-time ceremony and wedding breakfast can be quickly swapped into a night-time disco party, making this a truly inspiring all-in-one wedding venue. “We have hosted many weddings now and we are delighted with the reaction from brides, grooms and guests alike,” she added. “Weddings are now such a key part of what we offer that we really want to keep on working to improve the whole experience and really give loved ones the special day they deserve. “The beauty of The Engine Shed is that we can be so many things to so many people. Some will come to us for our themed disco nights, others will come to see a tribute band, comedy night or charity event. The venue is

also a perfect place for private parties, anniversaries, christenings, conferences, wakes, Batmitzvahs... indeed functions of any kind!” The Engine Shed’s next wedding event will be on Sunday 23 April when it will hold its bi-annual Wedding Fair from 11am-3pm. Admission is free and a fantastic variety of local wedding suppliers are already lined up to exhibit. There will also be goody bags and a glass of sparkling wine for all guests who attend. And, of course, even if you are not getting married this year then there is still likely to be something of interest happening at The Engine Shed for you during 2017. A full programme of events is lined up for the coming 12 months, and includes comedy nights, regular quiz nights, a St Patrick’s Party, a George Michael Tribute Evening, a Macmillan Cancer Variety Night, and much much more! Also, The Engine Shed’s inaugural music festival, Shedstock, will be taking place in August. ipley Castle, near Harrogate, is steeped in 700 years of history and is still very much a family home. From the moment you enter the village, Ripley stands apart: it is beautiful, historic and picture postcard perfect. Ripley offers a range of great inclusive packages, with no hidden costs, so you know exactly where you are when budgeting for your big day. All the catering is done ‘in-house’ and the castle has established a great reputation for excellence and reliability when it comes to serving fine cuisine and good wines. A number of the castle’s main reception rooms are licensed for civil wedding ceremonies and the 16th century oak-panelled

library lends a fabulous air of history and dignity to the proceedings, but some couples prefer to use one of the lighter Georgian rooms. The spectacular Long Gallery in the East Wing also seats up to 120 people. Dedicated wedding co-ordinators sit down with you to prepare a detailed programme for the day, so that everybody knows who is doing what and when. You’ll also receive a copy, so you are always in control. The three most common causes of chronic neck and arm pain that we see in practice are: 1 Discogenic pain – bulging disc between the vertebrae in the neck 2. Facet syndrome – wear and tear in the joints between the vertebra from injury or repetitive strain to the neck 3 Spondylosis – wear and tear process causing bony growth at edges of the vertebra (bony spurs) When you see the neurosurgeon, they will take a detailed history from you focussing on the onset, intensity of pain, its radiation to the precise place in your arm and whether there are problems with grip, walking or balance.

If appropriate they will refer you for an MRI scan of your neck which will help to see if any nerves are trapped. They will then correlate any abnormal scan findings with clinical findings to make a defnitive management plan. The first line of management is generally conservative with physiotherapy and modification to lifestyle. If this fails and you have a large bulging disc or significant compression of the nerves, the option of surgery will be discussed. LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE WITH THE HELP OF THE EXPERT DESIGN TEAM AT FINITE SOLUTIONS. here is just one single factor that can change everything in your home, from the appearance and size of each room, to your mood, comfort and even your health – lighting. Whilst most of us try to find that essential piece of furniture or room-altering shade of beige, the use of aesthetic and natural lighting can actually make all the difference and will transform a home from a cold sterile shell in to a warm and inviting space. Leading home technology installation specialist Finite Solutions, which has a dedicated service for lighting, talks through the options. Lighting technologies have come a long way in residential design. From simple ecofriendly LED replacement lamps to integrated LED strips and plastered in wall and floor washers all the way to intelligent whole house lighting control systems that set preprogrammed lighting levels and moods throughout your home and garden. The capability of lighting to transform your home has never been greater. Whilst effective lighting can radically affect aesthetics and our mood, it has a functional role too. Finding the right solution to illuminate kitchen work areas or the home study will enhance productivity, reduce eye strain and manage stress extremely effectively.

T

Choosing the right lighting can also save you money. Lighting accounts for around 15 per cent of a typical household’s electricity bill but you can cut your energy use and lighting bill by utilising the latest LED technology. Whilst all LED lamps are not equal, selection of a good quality fitting will not only use less than 20per cent of the electrical of a standard light bulb it will also last 50 times longer, so changing just ten lamps in your home to LED could save nearly £250 a year – switching to LED could prove to be your savviest home investment yet. Incorporating good energy-saving technologies such as an all LED lighting design and a lighting control system into an overall home automation system, can also significantly increase the appeal of your property too. For example, Lutron lighting control systems further reduce the energy used by your LED lighting whilst also providing security functions, holiday modes, automated switch off when the house is unoccupied and remote control via your iPhone and iPad. But getting it right is not just as simple as

changing a few light bulbs. To deliver an outstanding lighting design in your property the design and associated cabling must be considered at the earliest stages of any refurbishment, extension or new build property and this can be a daunting task for many home owners. Working with a good lighting designer will deliver flexible and functional lighting that fulfils usage requirements whilst emphasising architectural and interior design features. Working with an experienced lighting design team allows the design process to be very simple for home owners and detailed plans, cabling schedules and specifications for all light fittings ensures collaboration between your various, building, design and electrical contractors to ensure a straightforward installation and stunning end result. Hand-built for a lifetime IT’S THE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL THAT MAKES REVIVAL BEDS SO SPECIAL. here’s something really comforting about ordering a handmade bed direct from the craftsmen that built it. You can almost smell the wood shavings and feel the love and attention that’s gone into every tiny detail. The craftsmen at Retford-based Revival Beds build handmade beds the way they used to be built. It all began back in 1983 when a pair of cabinet makers who ran a small

T

business restoring antique furniture found they were unable to source traditional beds to suit the modern preference for wider beds. So they decided to build the beds themselves. Today Revival Beds offer a collection of handmade beds that reflect the very best in the art of traditional British craftsmanship and values. Yet, because each bed is built to order, customers can specify any size they wish – from standard widths (up to 8 foot) through to custom-built sizes. The range is impressive – from Gallicinspired sleigh beds to traditional beds plus a majestic collection of four-posters, each with its own distinct personality. Beds can be personalised with a choice of natural wood and painted finishes. Or, as in the case of the 150-200-year aged Oak Collection, simply waxed to bring out the character of the wood. Revival isn’t just about beds; the company

also offers an extensive range of coordinating bedroom furniture, handcrafted to the same exacting standards. To complete the picture, there’s a beautiful collection of quality bedding and British-made mattresses. Each bed is fully guaranteed, and delivery and installation is free. Customers can order from Revival’s brochure or visit the showroom to see a range of beds, furniture and options. Showroom tours also include a voucher to spend on coffee and cake at the local bistro afterwards!

The triangular Balluta Square, wedged between Sliema and Paceville, offers a fantastic location to stop and relax in the afternoon, be it after a day of activities on jeeps, quads, bikes, segways or after savouring the fine and relatively unknown wines at one of many vineyards. You can enjoy Balluta Square after a day of meetings, or after exploring the wonderful historical towns and cities on foot. This stop could also be arranged after a day spent cruising at sea along the beautiful blue lagoon and inlets of Comino on a catamaran, a yacht or a gullet, which would leave you pleasantly fulfilled, or after sailing along some of the most magnificent fortifications of Valletta, which date back 450 years. In the evenings, the area doubles up as a buzzing hangout for the trendy crowd seeking a refreshing aperitif after work. Named after ballut, the Maltese name for an oak tree, the square is ‘guarded’ by the majestic Balluta Buildings – the finest example of art nouveau on the islands – and the Le Meridien St Julian’s Hotel & Spa, which is built on the grounds of the 19th century Villa Cassar Torregiani. The hotel has been instrumental in injecting life to the area. And if you are seeking to place your meeting or incentive in Malta, you should consider checking into this boutique five-star hotel that is within walking distance of the

T

island’s nightlife, yet wedged among a picturesque bay and a selection of bars and restaurants for your entertainment. Apart from boasting an award-winning spa to revive your weary bodies and quieten your over-stimulated minds, the newly appointed general manager, Alex Incorvaja, has roped in a dynamic food and beverage team to ensure your tastebuds also get treated to a feast of flavours at Scirocco Restaurant and a guaranteed memorable culinary experience at Taro, the newly minted, au courant, bistro-style restaurant. If you don’t wish to stray far from the hotel grounds, then Alpine Sterling’s team will be on hand to suggest a number of fine choices where to dine; favourites include The Villa, which offers an exquisite experience teamed with a picture-postcard view, or the more informal U Bistrot for a glass of wine and a quick bite. Beyond the hotel, make sure you discover the little French patisserie that bakes mouthwatering ham and cheese croissants, quiches, delicious pastries and cakes, which you

can enjoy in the square. Lining the bay are also a few of Malta’s popular restaurants. For a fine dining experience, visit the family-run Barracuda Restaurant, which is perched right over the bay atop its more family-oriented pizzeria, Piccolo Padre; or if you want Mediterranean cuisine, book a place at the unassuming Wigi’s Kitchen. These are all places which we are sure you will enjoy. A bit further up is the legendary City of London pub, which opened during World War 1 in 1914, where you can sample a choice of the island’s best beers; or if you’re after something hip in terms of cuisine or a refreshing cocktail and live music visit the contemporary Electro Lobster Project, which is tucked beneath Balluta Buildings. And, finally, if you just wish to enjoy a quiet night, simply order room service, pop open a bottle of wine and sit on your terrace to watch the sun set over the bay as it washes the buildings’ limestone with an orange hue. This is just part of the experience which we would love to share with you, an authentic, truly Maltese experience in one of the most eclectic locations that Malta has to offer. Le Meridien St Julian’s and its surrounding locations are just three hours away from most UK airports.
