Top ten trustee tips JAMES LAYCOCK, WILL TRUST AND ESTATE DISPUTES PARTNER AT IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH, EXPLAINS THE ROLE OF THE TRUSTEE. he appointment as a trustee is a serious but potentially very rewarding office, from a personal perspective. A trustee can make a significant difference to a beneficiary’s life, sometimes at a critical juncture. I have condensed my experience of helping trustees into a list of top ten things to consider. n the centenary of some, not all, British women getting the vote, the new exhibition A Woman’s Place? at Abbey House Museum looks at the struggles and progress of women in achieving equality and recognition. The exhibition reveals how everyday life has changed for women in the home, school and workplace. Brought to life through witty illustrations by Jacky Fleming, it features stories and objects from 1860 to the present day linked to strong pioneering women. These range from suffragette Leonora Cohen’s WSPU badge to Olympic boxer Nicola Adams’s glove, and a gown worn by Councillor Joyce Challenor in the 1960s. Social history curator Kitty Ross has worked for Leeds Museums and Galleries for over 20 years and is responsible for the local history collections, having previously worked on Fairy Tales and Fantasy, Crime and Punishment, How Do I Look? and Yorkshire. “With this exhibition we hope to inspire women and girls to believe that their ambitions and achievements are not limited by their gender,” said Kitty. “2018 is the 100th anniversary of some

women getting the right to vote but we didn’t want to just put on a narrow Suffragette exhibition. Instead it seemed like a great opportunity to examine how the lives of women have changed both in the lead up to receiving the vote and in the century since. “No anniversary is in a vacuum and many of the arguments and struggles for women’s rights began in the 1860s and continue to the present day. Gaining political rights is only one aspect of these changes in society, so we will be looking at a whole range of other areas including health, education and work. “I always enjoy displaying our objects in a new context and exploring different stories about them. Some of the highlights include paintings and sculptures by forgotten female artists, a lock of hair kept by a First World War munitions worker and a magnificent certificate awarded to the suffragette Leonora Cohen for her time in prison for the suffragette cause,” adds Kitty.
A Woman’s Place also honours four relatively unsung heroines who lived and worked in Leeds, with new commemorative ceramics by local artist Katch Skinner. The four heroines include 1940s all-female jazz band leader Ivy Benson, born and bred in Holbeck, Morley cycling champion Beryl Burton, Leeds suffragette Mary Gawthorpe, and Edith Pechey, one of the first female doctors in the United Kingdom, who practised in Leeds during the 1870s-80s. “I am excited to have been working with two fabulous women artists who have helped illustrate the exhibition. Jacky Fleming has created drawings for the exhibition design and we were able to commission Katch Skinner to create beautiful ceramic portraits.” These characterful ceramics will become part of the Leeds Museums collection, ensuring that people honour these women for centuries to come.
“We have also enjoyed adding new objects to the, including the new “Women of Nasa” Lego set, some cross-stitch samplers with feminist slogans and Nicola Adams’s boxing glove. We will be borrowing some items from the Feminist Archive North and have also been lent a portrait of the first female Lord Mayor of Leeds (Jessie Beatrice Kitson, 1942-1943). “The exhibition tells the stories of some of Leeds heroines and pioneers, and celebrates the everyday heroism of women working hard to make a living or coping with the struggles of everyday life. “Historically speaking, women’s achievements and lives haven’t always been as well recorded as some of their male counterparts, so it’s a good opportunity to highlight stories of female creativity and resourcefulness,” said Kitty. “It would be great if visitors came away inspired by some of the stories, and more aware about how women’s lives have changed over the last 150 years. “We also want young girls and boys to feel that their future career choices aren’t restricted by gender, so have included a very wide cross-section of Leeds women and the different roles they have taken on. This ranges from Lord Mayors, engineers and dry-stone wallers to community campaigners and more. Above all myself and the team hope the exhibition will be interesting and thoughtprovoking for all our visitors.” The exhibition will run throughout 2018 at Abbey House Museum, alongside a programme of talks, study days and schools workshops. Breathlessness is a common problem and one that increasingly limits our functional capacity with age and diminishing fitness level. There are a number of causes for this and often we are focussed on a diagnosis related to heart or lungs. Careful assessment of both heart and lung conditions to clarify their relative contribution is important. Accurate assessment of lung health by detailed history – particularly occupational history, examination, lung function test and a chest X-ray is a good start. Occasionally, a CT scan of lungs and further lung function testing is required for clarity. Breathlessness can be caused by a number of different things and changes in weight and loss of fitness and conditioning can contribute significantly towards it. Advancing age with diminishing musculoskeletal reserves does not help matters. Often losing ten per cent in weight (if you are overweight) helps greatly together by increasing level of fitness. Health and lifestyle choices we make early on in our lives maintain our functional capacity for longer. Whilst maintaining a normal body mass index (BMI) and a certain level of fitness; it is important that people report changes they experience in their lives to their doctors so that early investigation can be performed. It is important for people with lung conditions such as Asthma or COPD to take inhalers as prescribed and monitor their condition regularly to maintain optimum lung health. To find out your Body Mass Index (BMI), go to our online calculator at www.spirehealthcare.com/weight-loss-surgery/ourweight-loss-treatments/gastric-bypass/

From left: Curtis T Johns, Nick Carsberg, AJ Bentley, Yazdan Qafouri and Sario Solomon in The Band
LEEDS SONG-WRITER CURTIS T JOHNS TELLS HANNAH SANDERS HOW HE ENDED UP WITH A STARRING ROLE IN A MUSICAL FEATURING THE MUSIC OF TAKE THAT.
Strike up The Band! ast year, Leeds-born songwriter Curtis T Johns won the TV talent show, Let it Shine. The show was aimed at finding five contestants to join the cast of a brand new stage show written by Tim Firth - The Band. Curtis, along with AJ Bentley, Nick Carsberg, Yazdan Qafouri and Sario Solomon play the role of a boyband – Five To Five – in the nationwide touring musical which features the music of Take That. Curtis also owns Far Moss Sports Ground and before auditioning for the show, was already an established songwriter. He’s written with artists including Matt Cardle, Kerri Watt and Ray Quinn. Here he talks writing inspiration, the Let it Shine audition and what’s next after The Band.
L
A powerful performance – The Band. Pictures: Matt Crockett.
Tell me about yourself and how you got into song writing?
It was in high school that I started realising that I not only enjoyed performing but people started telling me I was good. I taught myself chord progressions and began writing my own tunes and melodies. The music teacher asked me to start performing at events and from there Leeds Town Hall commissioned me to write music for their big ceremonial days. After three months of university, I left as I wanted to pursue being a songwriter full-time which is when I got a publishing deal. I was mentored by two talented musicians and songwriters – Steve Chrisanthou and John Beck – so I owe a lot to them. What’s your songwriting process?
Songwriting is an individual thing, so there is no right or wrong way to do it. Sometimes you
can be inspired purely on a lyric basis but other times you write the melody and the words come much later. Why did you apply for Let it Shine?
I was in Manchester and there was an opportunity to audition. So, I thought that I would love to meet Gary Barlow and show him my songwriting and music – little did I know we would go on to win. Why did you choose Corinne Bailey Ray’s Girl Put Your Records On as your audition song?
It’s a song that’s very personal in my life about my journey, the help I’ve had and how I got here. It’s such an understated and beautifully written song, and was the perfect choice for that moment. What moments in The Band, the musical standout?
I love Tim Firth and how he has made the dialogues and stories weave throughout the music. There are lots of big things happening on stage - it’s a really powerful performance. Will Five To Five continue working as a band after the musical?
We’ve signed a management deal, so we are currently working on music at the moment and hopefully will be releasing a few bits around Christmas. Finally, what would you say to people coming to see the show?
The musical is a tribute to fans of any music. If you have a song in your life that takes you back a memorable moment, then this is the show for you. The Band is at Leeds Grand Theatre from 20 - 31 March, for more information and tickets visit www.leedsgrandtheatre.com Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 27

Plan for perfection Hannah Sanders has got some fantastic ideas for spring weddings.
Y
ou’ve found the perfect partner, squealed an excited yes and popped more than a few champagne corks to celebrate. With spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning your dream wedding. Often described as one of the most romantic seasons, it boasts feelings of rebirth, growth and excitement in a way that that no other season does. It’s the perfect time to say goodbye to the chills of winter and welcome clear skies and wonderful smells of flowers in bloom. So, if you’ve always wanted to have a spring wedding, here are some ideas to help you create the perfect day.
Venue The venue is one of the most important aspects of your big day, so it’s key to take your time and choose the place that is right for you both. The warmer weather opens more doors, meaning you can make full use of the outdoors. Visit castles and stately homes which with their stunning gardens will be an ideal setting for an unforgettable wedding. If you want something more traditional, choose your local church for the ceremony followed by a reception at a favourite hotel or, if you want to embrace the open air opt a barn or even rent a field, fill it with marquees and dance the night away
in the great outdoors. A wedding reception really can be anywhere, so if you are wanting something low key or close to home, why not have it in your own back garden? Decorate it with a heap of fairy lights, put on a buffet and fill it with bright flowers.
Favours Give out seed packages as favours, so your guests can take one and watch love grow. Alternatively fill small glass bottles with loose leaf teas, so your guests can take home the taste of spring. Why not create mini birds’ nests full of mini-eggs, offer up mini boxes
Colour schemes Orchid is a soft, romantic shade that works well with almost any other colour. Pair it with a deep hunter green to add the perfect contrast. For something sleeker opt for a silver theme and add a splash of sweet melon orange to brighten up the venue. Throw in strands of bulb lights, florals and greenery along with copper and metallic accents to bring the venue to chic perfection. Why not try a warm light brown with creamy rose and light dusty blue? This airy palette creates a soothing and comforting feel and makes merging vintage with modern easy.
full of strawberry and toffee popcorn or simply have a pick ‘n’ mix stand so they can help themselves to childhood favourites.
Cake
Décor
A showstopper wedding cake is a must and a spring wedding means you can make full use of pastel icing and spring flowers. Pick a wedding cake that summons the taste of spring with in-season berries and fruit. Instead of a buttercream filling, consider a fresh strawberry puree filling or even a lemon cake with blackberry filling. Keep the outside simple by decorating it with a waterfall of seasonal blooms and a silhouette cake topper. If you have your heart set on a chocolate cake, but still want it to reflect the season choose the popular ‘naked cakes’ and fill it with a chocolate cherry ganache. In keeping with pastel colours, why not create an ombre three-tier cake? Use blues, pinks or purples and decorate with a ‘tied the knot’ topper.
Decorations set the tone for the entire day, so you need to be sure that you love the décor at both the ceremony and reception. Spring is synonymous with rebirth and growth so DIY watering cans are an ideal decoration. Simply fill them with water, adding a selection of colourful flowers - you can even paint them to match your décor. Make potted table numbers with succulents. These blend well with almost any centrepiece and you can plant them weeks in advance. Enjoying fresh fruit is a treat in the spring, so bring that feeling to your wedding by setting up a farmer’s market fruit stand. Pick up different types of crates, add chalkboard signs and a pretty hand lettered sign to let your guests know they can help themselves.
44 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
Bridesmaids and groomsmen To make your groomsmen stand out from the crowd, have each one wear a different shade of pastel with a different brightly coloured flower in the jacket. For the bridesmaid dresses, choose wrap dresses in dusty blues, light pinks, greens or even yellows. Pair them with bright tulip bouquets, vintage parasols and floral headdresses.
Bride and groom wear For the bride the world really is your oyster when it comes to outfit choice. Go for an open-back or off the shoulder lace or embellished dress to truly embrace the season. You could even add a dash of colour with embroidered flowers or a pastel cardigan. Opt for a fifties-style fit or a flare dress and pair it with a white denim jacket for a touch of true vintage styling. For a more traditional look, pair your dress with a cape or caplet to add a touch of elegance. When it comes to the groom’s attire, it’s important for him to look stylish while still being comfortable. Grey is a more rustic alternative to the traditional black for spring. And as the weather warms up, they can always skip the jacket but keep the look smart by adding waistcoats and flat caps. If you are wanting a more classic appearance, then introduce some spring colour through the tie and pocket chief for a timeless and elegant look.
Wedding planning tips – Be practical when it comes to looking at wedding venues for your reception – Go to wedding fairs, they are a great source of inspiration – Go seasonal and go bold with colours – Be prepared for any weather by having brollies and wellies on hand just in case – Always allow extra time for travel – Choose a versatile venue

PANTONE’S COLOUR OF THE YEAR Pantone’s Colour of the Year brings a dramatic shade of ultraviolet to the stage, focusing on an unconventional royally rich hue. It’s a versatile option for any venue and this bright and mysterious tone boasts possibilities from blueberry cake décor, to bouquets of lavender roses. Strip back to basics and tone down the intensity of ultraviolet when opting for more a more natural wedding. Lilac cocktails, mauve bridesmaid dresses, muted purple placemats and amethyst florals can all add a touch of regality without being theatrical. Alternatively, bold violets, rich wine and plum hues can complement the stark white of a bridal gown.

Lilac cocktails can be a real show-stopper
Lace detailing adds a boho touch
WAREHOUSE Last year charted the rise of the warehouse wedding and it remains full steam ahead. Stark brick walls and industrial architecture offer a blank canvas and rooms can be decorated without limitations, with strings of fairy lights, candles and Nordic décor to contrast the rustic and raw backdrop.
BOHO Bohemian adornments are a trend to watch, fittingly pairing with the warehouse trend. Elegant and intricate boho motifs such as lace detailing, ornate beading and neutral florals introduce this simple accent to your day, while copper lanterns and vintage mason jars are a sure way to inject individuality and personal style.
FOLIAGE Pastel green and white foliage is stealing the spotlight, adding an elegant touch to table centrepieces and bouquets, while white roses and hibiscus can be dotted amidst vines of moss-topped undergrowth. For hanging floral installations, Eucalyptus and cactus’ go hand in hand, and wreaths and garlands can be suspended over entrances for a grander facade.
FINISHING TOUCHES
Add some fun with a photo booth
If you’re looking for ways to entertain your wedding guests, consider a photo booth. Your guests will love posing for fun snaps and can take the pictures home as favours. Dessert tables are the hottest new wedding trend and they’re a great idea if you’re looking for a creative way to display your wedding cake. Invite guests to bring a cake or pudding to the reception venue, where they are displayed buffet style for everyone to enjoy after the main course. There are those couples that ban mobile phones on their wedding day, and those that fully embrace the digital age by creating a wedding hashtag for guests to upload their happy snaps to Twitter and Instagram for the rest of the party to enjoy. Pop a hashtag on placemats, invitations or centrepieces to create something really personal.

Make your fairytale come true Wharfedale Grange makes the perfect venue for the wedding of your dreams
E
very Cinderella story needs a fairy godmother, and on this occasion it was farm owner and interior designer Claire Thomas who decided to cast her magic wand and transform a group of barns nestled in the green hills between Leeds and Harrogate into an enchanting wedding and events venue. Whatever your story, Wharfedale Grange is the place where you really can welcome your happy ever after. Claire has transformed her farm into a magnificent classic contemporary, yet timeless haven, in an industrialist style with a romantic twist. However, when it comes to your dream wedding, Claire and her team of professionals are dedicated to helping you create your wedding, your way. “All our couples have their own dedicated wedding co-ordinator and whilst there will be plenty of décor inspiration, we want each wedding to be in the couples’ own personal style, not ours,” confirms Claire. “We even
have our own onsite florist, Leafy Couture, who are passionate about creating beautiful wedding flowers to really reflect the personality of each bride and groom.” Wharfedale Grange has always been close to the hearts of local residents. It has been a pick-your-own strawberry farm since 1975, with their award-winning asparagus adding to the offer from 1995, and many couples who come to view the site have pleasant childhood memories of picking strawberries in their summer holidays there. Claire has lived at the farm for 17 years, but confesses she doesn’t know a thing about farming – that was her late partner Richard Snowden’s forte. But after Richard was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2010, it was clear they needed a long-term plan for the farm. Then in 2011, Richard’s niece asked if she could get married on the site. Claire and Richard helped her organise the whole wedding in an impressive three months, hiring a huge marquee overlooking the gorgeous Yorkshire countryside.
The marquee could be seen from the main road and as a result, wedding queries started pouring in and before they knew it, they were booked up for the following year. Although business was booming, so was the noise, which often carried across to their neighbours in the small hamlet of Dunkeswick. Claire realised they needed a more permanent structure to be able to continue with the fabulous weddings they were offering. What started out as a straightforward barn conversion, soon turned into an ambitious £2.5 million project to create a luxurious, twostorey, wedding wonderland. With Claire’s vision and the expertise of Mark Jackson of Calder Valley Architects – along with bespoke builders Haresign Construction – this dream venue is finally becoming a reality. As you reach the grand stone entrance, you will sweep up the tree-lined driveway and be greeted with tall, industrial Crittall-style double doors. From the main lobby at the end of the hallway to the left is a magnificent ceremony room, large enough to seat 145 guests downstairs with a further 55 on the balcony. Many couples are opting for a gospel choir to perform from the balcony (reminiscent of that famous scene in Love Actually!) before departing down the aisle under twinkling chandeliers. Alternatively, if it’s a beautiful day, you can marry outside in the wedding pavilion amid the stunning surrounding panoramic Yorkshire landscape. After the ceremony, depending on the weather, the celebration drinks can either be held outside on the Yorkshire stone flagged courtyard, on the lawn by the wedding pavilion or in the stunning designer cocktail bar with it’s fabulous mezzanine. You can mingle with canapes before your guests are even introduced to the main reception room, which accommodates parties of up to 250. “It’s lovely to have a ‘big reveal’ of the main room that no-one’s even seen, where the tables will already be dressed just waiting for your guests,” says Claire. “There will be a kitchen for approved outside caterers to work in, which has a discreet entrance around the back, so chefs’ vans and waitresses vehicles are all neatly tucked away from view behind the scenes. “Even the bride has her own ‘secret’ getting ready room, complete with its own ensuite shower room just steps away from the
ceremony and reception rooms.” Back in the limelight, the luxurious cocktail bar, plush seating areas and beautiful fairy-lit backdrops of the building are the perfect place for photo opportunities throughout the day. Hidden sound-proofed panelling throughout behind a reclaimed wood interior, ensures the parties won’t ever be heard by the residents of Dunkeswick again, while the fairy-lit original beams and 42 tonnes of reclaimed wood, pay homage to this charming structure. Even the ladies room, where luxury and practicality meet once again, is structured for a seamless and stress-free day, with a phone charging station and a Prosecco tap – just the place for a gossip with the girls! The location of this venue is just as practical, with its gorgeous gardens and stunning panoramic views just eight minutes from Harrogate and 15 minutes from Leeds it’s right on the doorstep for North Leeds. Onsite florist Leafy Couture also provides flowers for outside weddings, as well as teaching their unique style in the floristry school to florists and flower lovers. Other future plans include en-suite accommodation for six bedrooms in the house, so bride, groom and close family can stay over. Claire and her team look forward to helping you make your wedding dreams come true, when they launch this spring 2018. Contact Wharfedale Grange now to book your 2018 event or 2019 wedding. THE CRAIGLANDS HOTEL
When you check in to Craiglands Hotel, a grand Victorian venue that has been welcoming visitors from across the globe for more than 150 years, you are in safe hands. General Manager Khem Djedidi arrived at Craiglands, set in six acres of beautiful, landscaped grounds and woodlands, after an eventful career that saw him being entrusted in key positions at major hotels owned by global brands. He came to Craiglands, which is just a short walk from the historic spa town of Ilkley, after working at two hotels in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he took on all roles in directing operations and food and beverages. Also on Khem’s CV is a six year spell working with Hilton hotels, five years with The Village hotels and two years with Macdonald hotels. Khem says: “I arrived at Craiglands just over 12 months ago with a full business plan to revamp the hotel and strengthen links with the local community. “My main goal was to push Craiglands towards the branded market, which we have achieved as the hotel has been granted Best Western Plus status.” “We have also built a new car park which was completed in September 2017 and begun the full soft refurbishment of all bedrooms.” Future plans for Craiglands include building a spa and a branded restaurant and completing the bedroom refurbishments.
For fine dining, banquets, conferences, large corporate events or just to get away from it all, you really must come to Craiglands! For details of all our events visit our website www.craiglands.co.uk

Coldbath Flooring Coldbath Flooring specialise in the supplying and fitting of prefinished engineered wood flooring but one question always asked is “should we have oiled or lacquered?” Both oil and lacquer finished floors have their advantages. Oiled wood floors will need more maintenance but this means you can revitalise the floor whenever you feel usually ever 1218 months, unlike the lacquered floors which rely on the protective lacquer to last until it has worn to a point where it needs to be resanded and finished again, although many lacquered floors now have long guarantees not to wear away the lacquer under normal circumstances. These newer lacquers are almost invisible and have been developed to give the appearance of wood in its most natural form. At Coldbath Flooring you can see examples of these types of finishes on display in the Harrogate showroom. 135 Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, HG2 0NU Tel: 01423 313241 // www.coldbathflooring.com

Delectable Devonshire IS THIS THE PERFECT BRASSERIE? ASKS CHRIS WILSON. n restaurant land, somewhere between the relaxed dining environment of a contemporary bistro and the cosy world of the proper oldfashioned pub, you will find the brasserie. It’s a delicate balancing act and one that those lovely people who run The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey have tackled with confidence. With a hotel, spa and fine dining restaurant also present, on a site that sprawls across a beautiful stretch of countryside, this is patently a big business set-up. But there isn’t even the slightest sniff of corporate about The Brasserie, a selfcontained little haven of contentment. If you’ve experienced any of the dining pubs and restaurants run by the Devonshire family in the north of England you’ll recognise some comfortingly familiar touches including the bold use of colourful multistriped fabric. But the vivid orange painted bar is most definitely an original feature, making for a strong first impression. The menu is a mouth-watering mix of pub favourites and more complex dishes, with most of the ingredients locally sourced and vegetables from the kitchen garden. With starters (or initial delicacies as the menu charmingly calls them) including Nidderdale lamb koftas and a sharing platters of seafood, choosing was a struggle, but my trio of Wharfedale pig (£9.95) was most definitely a winner. Glazed pork belly, slow roasted to pull-apart perfection, was the star
I

of the show with black pudding sausage roll and homemade scotch egg making for a strong supporting cast. A pot of vibrantly sharp piccalilli brought the whole thing triumphantly into focus. Across the table my friend Heather’s baked camembert (£12.95) was studded with sprigs of thyme and arrived with a generous plate of toast and a big pot of fig & pear chutney. There’s no elegant way to eat this warm, gooey comfort food classic, but on a chilly February night it was a real treat. My main course of chargrilled venison haunch (£28) was served slightly pink as requested. The rich, tender meat was just perfect with delicious accompaniments of dauphinoise potato, celeriac puree, plum ketchup, kale and jus. Heather’s Devonshire fish pie (£17.95) was a classic of its type with pleasing chunks of salmon, cod, smoked haddock and king prawn in a creamy sauce, topped with cheesy mash. We shared a side dish of roasted root vegetables (£3.50). Food of this standard demands liquid refreshment to match. For all its contemporary touches the bar screams ‘proper pub’ with three Yorkshire real ales including Black Sheep and Saltaire Blonde and even a local lager - Radka Pilsner may sound like it comes from Eastern Europe but it’s brewed in Skipton. There’s a fantastic wine list of familiar and more adventurous choices, including a great selection by the glass. A recent trip to New Zealand’s vineyards had left Heather thirsty
for more and she was hugely impressed by the Riesling (£12) and the Sauvignon Blanc (£11). My Argentinian Malbec (£13) suited the venison to a tee. For dessert’s Heather’s chocolate and amaretto torte (£6.95) served with a scoop of amaretto ice-cream was a dark, smooth delight and my trio of lemon (baked lemon cream, lemon parfait and lemon cake) had the perfect balance of sour-sweet and a scoop of raspberry sorbet rounded the plate off perfectly. So how do you define the perfect brasserie? It’s probably simplest to say you’ll know when you find it... and I suspect I just did. THE BOTTLE ROOM AT HARVEY NICHOLS IS THE IDEAL PLACE TO RELAX OVER A GLASS OR TWO OF SOMETHING GOOD.
The perfect pit stop he Fourth Floor Café at Harvey Nichols has been a stalwart on the Leeds dining scene for many years but their most recent addition is for now at least, relatively undiscovered. The Bottle Room occupies the space once filled by Polpo and Yo Sushi before that, and is now a relaxed, luxurious space to enjoy wines, spirits, beers and cocktails and watch the world go by. Following the exponential growth of the Wine Shop, the Bottle Room takes inspiration from a modern Enoteca, allowing customers a relaxed space to enjoy drinks alongside the knowledgeable staff at the Wine Shop who can advise on a bottle to take home later. Customers can even purchase a bottle of wine and enjoy it in the Bottle

Room with a corkage fee of just £10*. The perfect opportunity to try that spendy bottle of wine you’ve wondered about without the usual mark-up at a restaurant. Open from 10am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and 11am – 5pm on Sundays, it’s the perfect pit stop for the shopping weary for a caffeine fix or Prosecco pep-up! We think it is the ideal spot for a light lunch, after-work drinks, wine connoisseurs or a meeting on the fly with that client you want to impress. The Bottle Room also offers beers from six different countries, including Iceland, Spain and Japan, nine different gins with a good representation from gins crafted in Yorkshire, a bespoke edit of wines from the finest producers including vegan wines and an impressive offering of alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails. We particularly liked the Leeds Breakfast Martini, a wonderful blend of gin, rhubarb liqueur, orange and rhubarb jam, orange juice and lemon juice. People who may be a tad indecisive should definitely go for a wine or gin flight. There’s coffee and tea too, of course. Additional to the extensive drinks menu, snacks and light bites can be enjoyed. The snacks menu includes olives, a cheese plate, ham hock bon bons served with miso mayonnaise and crab beignets served with a soya and ginger dip. You can’t beat the chips with spiced salt and aioli! The Wine Shop itself has also expanded boasting a broader range of speciality brands
of wines and spirits. The range of gin alone numbers over 80 lines, including the Swedish gin Hernö which was awarded the title of ‘World’s Best Gin’ at the last World Gin Awards. The Wine Shop also hosts monthly expert master classes in the Bottle Room for enthusiasts. In March the Bottle Room hosts a Rum and Chocolate tasting event to discover exciting new flavour combinations and in April a ‘New Season, New Wines’ tasting. The space can also be hired for private events, wine tasting, and bespoke events. *A bottle of wine with a minimum of £20 value must be purchased from the Wine Shop to take advantage of the £10 corkage fee. Italian style, Yorkshire flair LUKE DOWNING’S PASSION FOR ITALIAN COOKING IS ABUNDANT AT HIS LATEST VENTURE, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. fter a decade of successfully running award-winning restaurants including Dough Bistro, Nineteen at Leeds Golf Centre and Vice and Virtue, Luke Downing decided to develop his love of Italian food, good wine and cocktails, by bringing a new concept to the former Dough Bistro site on Spen Lane. From this has risen, Aperitivo, a place where foodies can gather and indulge in some small plates and stonebaked pizzas, all created using local and authentic ingredients, influenced by Luke’s love and passion of Italian cooking, with a little bit of Yorkshire flair thrown in. The menu, too, is written in a way that conveys a sense of adventure and exploring the unknown, coupled with familiar comforts, and dictated by seasonality and market availability. The wine list is as well thought through as the menu itself, and as we swayed to a backdrop of Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and sweeping sax solos – which instantly seduced me – we kicked off proceedings with a dry, crisp and fruity glass of Primi Soli Pinot Grigio (£6). One thing that Luke and his kitchen team do very well is work with the seasons, and so it seemed rude not to sample the porcini

mushroom and black truffle tagliatelle (£6.75). Pasta ribbons came dressed with black truffle paste and elegantly light and flavourful porcini mushrooms soaked in tea. The result was simply, a beautifully rich, perfectly seasoned, delightful thing to eat. Next, beetroot-cured salmon was skilfully sliced and harmonised with the deliciously salty-then-sweet flavours of the melting lime gel and salsa verde. A distinctly rich and creamy portion of mozzarella covered in Parma ham and baked in a herb-flecked tomato sauce (£7.50) – accompanied by freshfrom-the-oven bread for scooping – made for my partner’s favourite course of the night. The succeeding giant meatball (£7) – truly the size of a child’s head – didn’t last long, either, and was a subtly seasoned beast stuffed with melted Gorgonzola and topped with a piquant and fresh marinara sauce that we could have happily ladled on everything we ate. Elsewhere, Luke’s bubbled and blistered roast chicken pesto pizza was proving one heck of a joy to tear into; pillowy soft housemade dough came lavished with pesto potent enough to clear a room for days, and the tomato, pine nuts, onion and capers were each, in-turn, mini mounds of heaven. A wonderful way to finish our meal, the
lemon and rosemary tart (£5), in particular, was a favourite with me. Topped with a cloud of clotted cream, the prominent lemon hit was interrupted by a smattering of raspberries which allowed the layers to sing out. My partner’s pistachio and almond frangipane (£6.50) didn’t disappoint either – the bitterness of the accompanying pistachio cream cutting into the sweetness perfectly. Every single plate was completely emptied – that’s testament enough to what we thought of the meal – and as we headed out into the evening, we were both in agreement that if you’re looking for a destination for your next date night, Aperitivo is it. A world of taste RACHEL MARTIN GOES ON A CULINARY GRAND TOUR AT ALEXANDER’S. tepping inside Alexander’s is like walking into a colonial dream, but with a punch of modernism. With huge palms, arched window mirrors and a monochrome tiled entrance, husband-andwife team Alan and Susannah Daley have transformed the Grade II listed building at the top of Skipton High Street into an eclectic mix of periods and styles to reflect Victorian and Edwardian explorers and Grand Tour goers. Recently opened, the beautiful pewter bar and reflective pendant lights are really the main event and dominate the entrance, and the name refers to Alexander, the intrepid explorer. Captivated by exotic flavours, aromas and visual feasts, Alexander began sending home new recipes and ingredients along with plant specimens, flowers and even wildlife. And inspired by his Edwardian Grand Tour, Susannah and Alan have curated a menu of exotic delights, authentic ingredients and exciting tastes. Whether you’re a sharer or a lone buck, the Small Plate, My Plate and Our Plate menus means there’s something for everyone, from international staples to sharing boards, and the aim at Alexander’s is to linger for hours on end, grazing and enjoying the full day to night experience. With a worldly theme reflected in its décor and offerings, it’s no surprise that there are
S
more countries represented on the menu than you could shake a stick at – from Asia to the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines – and after confirming our four small plates, we began with warm Lebanese flat breads (£5.50), brushed with olive oil caraway and honey. The thin slices were buttery, deeply aromatic and almost ethereal in their lightness, faultlessly pairing with the accompanying juicy nubs of hummus, beetroot and carrot dips, which you could easily devour as a snack or as the prelude to your meal. Moving to our Italian-inspired selection, the combination of silky, fried burrata, stracciatella, charred corn and tomato jam (£13) was the winner of the four plates, followed closely by Asian-inspired satay chicken skewers, served with rice wine pickled vegetables and a gorgeous golden peanut sauce. Then there's the braised short rib mac and cheese (£11.50). Already an Alexander’s signature dish, extra-sharp cheddar formed a zesty, creamy sauce that filled every cranny of the al dente macaroni, with a smoky barbecue flavour consolidated in the short rib. Oozy, melty and just the right kind of smelly, our final plate of Harrogate blue cheese beignets with roast onion jelly (£9) went from crunchy to creamy in nanoseconds. And as I swabbed the final forkful through a
splash of beetroot dip, new layers of sweet, sour and tangy heat bloomed on the tongue. Pudding followed with only one clash of forks and a light and intensely decadent warm flourless chocolate cake (£7), which came topped with fudge sauce and a luscious cherry ripple gelato. Every single bite was a lifetime on the hips, but worth every moment. Alexander’s really know how to do desserts well. We finished the afternoon with a deliciously light and elegant blend of Sencha green tea with elderflower and raspberry (£2.75) while perusing the stunning canalside terrace. And if it wasn’t for the inclement Yorkshire weather, we could have been somewhere as far-flung as the menu throws you. Pioneering Yorkshire drug treatment

A mother of two young boys is bravely battling ovarian cancer for the second time after discovering it has recurred during a routine check up. Jo Beagley, 43, a management consultant from Harrogate, is now taking a new treatment at Spire Leeds Hospital – a daily medication of a drug pioneered in Yorkshire that is specific to her gene mutation. Discovered at the University of Sheffield with funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research, the treatment is giving her cause to be optimistic and could provide hope to other cancer sufferers. Jo is under the care of Dr David Jackson, consultant medical oncologist at Spire Leeds Hospital and a member of its highly experienced multi-disciplinary oncology team of specialists. With Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month coming up in March 2018, she takes every opportunity to raise awareness. Jo wrote a blog for Yorkshire Cancer Research throughout her initial treatment to raise awareness of the symptoms and share her account of going through the diagnosis and treatment. “The symptoms are difficult to spot particularly because of their similarity to other ailments. I only became aware of my symptoms three weeks before my original diagnosis. I think there’s a need to raise awareness of these symptoms so women can get them checked out at any early stage.

OUR WINNER Tesco Finest Salted Caramel Egg 310g, £9 A smooth Belgian milk chocolate base with creamy milk and white chocolate. Both are sweetened with crunchy caramel pieces and enhanced by a hint of sea salt... With a description like that, we were salivating before we’d even opened the box. The egg is split into two halves, so you can enjoy the best of both. As we split this thick and decadent egg in half, a few members of the panel even let out some “oohs” and “aahs”. The salt beautifully balances out the sweet caramel and chocolate, it’s an impressive size, well-presented and is egg-cellent value for money. The fact that we couldn’t help going back for seconds, was also a strong indicator that this was the best of the bunch.

BEST ALL-ROUNDER Betty’s Trio of Spring Flower Eggs 250g, £27.50 Not sure whether your loved-one likes milk, dark or white chocolate? This trio ticks all the boxes. The dark chocolate egg is rich with delicious depth of flavour, the white (or should we say silver?) chocolate was creamy and obviously of a high quality, while the milk chocolate was a good balance of the two. BEST FOR ALLERGIES Booja-Booja Around Midnight Espresso Easter Egg 35g, £9.99 Not only were we impressed by the gorgeously painted, egg-shaped wooden box this was presented in, we also couldn’t believe how deliciously silky these truffles were – especially considering they are organic and dairy, gluten and soya free. Coffee lovers will also enjoy the authentic flavour.
BEST FOR KIDS Thorntons White Chocolate Bunny 200g, £6 Thorntons is a must if you’ve got kids to buy for this Easter and this white chocolate bunny is a great choice. As well as being a decent size with a detailed kid-friendly design, you’re sure to get good quality chocolate from a high street favourite.
BEST FOR DARK CHOCOLATE LOVERS Chococo Luxury Madagascar MegaDark Egg 175g, £18 This one was certainly the coolest-looking of the bunch, with its geometric pattern and three layers of dark chocolate. If you know a true dark chocolate connoisseur, this bitter 85 per cent MegaDark egg is just the thing. Vegans and the ethically-minded can also rejoice, as the company strive to carefully source all their ingredients.
BEST FOR GROWN-UP KIDS Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swiss Chocolate Bunny 440g, £6 A grown-up take on a classic kid’s choice, this Easter treat from Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference range is a realistic twist on the usual cartoon-esque hollow bunny. This was such a work of art, it was a shame to behead it. But we were soon rewarded with smooth Swiss milk chocolate, which was easy to break up as it bent rather than snapped, therefore avoiding pesky crumbs – well, it would be a shame to waste any. Spring into action TIME TO GIVE YOUR HEATING OIL TANK SOME TLC! he worst of the winter weather might be behind us, but that’s no reason to forget about your oil tank. That humble tank, sat in your garden, has looked after you and your family during the long, cold winter nights so isn’t it time you gave it a bit of TLC? With the nights finally getting lighter and the first signs of spring in the air, there’s no better time to check the condition of your oil tank and spot any signs of wear. That way you can identify issues and get them repaired before they become a problem. Or, in the worst-case scenario replace an old and tired tank. The best way to ensure your tank will weather future years is to have it checked by

an OFTEC registered technician. These professionals will be able to identify any current or potential future problems and advise you on the best course of action. Classic signs of an impending issue include leaks, rust or weak spots, which are commonly found in older, single-skinned tanks. A proper inspection will identify these faults quickly which could save you a lot of trouble in the future. Such checks are essential because an oil leak can cause major environmental damage. Leaked oil can find its way to drains, many of which lead directly to rivers, streams, lakes and even garden ponds. Oil is poisonous to fish and other wildlife and smothers plants, with just two litres being enough to pollute the amount of water it takes to fill an Olympicsized swimming pool. Duncan Lambert, managing director of Rix Petroleum, said: “Now the festive season is behind us, I would advise everyone to check their heating oil tank. The winter weather can take its toll on heating oil tanks, especially on older ones. “Have an expert look over it and identify any problems you might face because the last thing you
want is a leak. Fortunately, oil leaks are rare but the consequences of a spill can be high. It would not only mean all the oil you’ve paid for is lost, but also contamination of the environment around the tank which can be problematic and expensive. “If your old, single-skinned tank is getting tatty and weak in places, give some consideration to upgrading to a modern bunded tank. A bunded tank will keep repairs to a minimum, help protect the environment and act as a more secure structure for keeping your oil safe from theft.” Rix Petroleum’s OFTEC certified engineers are available in Lincolnshire,Yorkshire and the east coast of Scotland. Rix offer a comprehensive Tank Health Check service from just £89 plus VAT where their experienced engineers will check the overall condition of your tank, remove any water and treat it with anti-bug.Visit www.rix.co.uk/tankservice to find out more and to book a service. Giggleswick School
Westville House School
Giggleswick Junior School was voted one of the UK’s Top 10 best value prep schools by the Telegraph. James Mundell, headmaster of Giggleswick Junior School said: “An independent education offers more time to nurture and discover talents in many different disciplines. It also provides children with more time to grow and mature at their own pace. “Our young learners enjoy small classes and specialist teachers with a vast range of expertise, allowing us to provide individual attention and a tailored learning programme for each child. We encourage every child to be curious, skilled, aware, passionate, creative, proactive, resilient and assured. “Our stunning location in the Yorkshire Dales makes it easy to fire imaginations and inspires a spirit of adventure, which creates a real enthusiasm for learning. We are also lucky to have access to some great facilities like the Richard Whiteley Theatre, allowing our pupils to perform and present on stage from a young age.”
Westville House School pupils are celebrating an exceptional set of exam results, with entry to all the senior schools of their choice. All the Year 6 children have worked incredibly hard with a hugely supportive staff team. Many have achieved academic scholarships with many also gaining success in the Skipton Grammar Schools entrance exams. Academic excellence has always been the focus at Westville along with ensuring that every skill that a child possesses is developed to full potential. For the younger children, the new Early Years unit is buzzing with children and new ideas - the excitement is palpable and laughter fills the corridors and the woodland areas. Visit Westville House for the Spring Open Morning on Saturday 21 April - you will be made very welcome and there will be a great opportunity to look around this exceptional school.

MOORLANDS SCHOOL Moorlands School, situated in Weetwood, is the oldest prep school in Leeds with a simple motto: “Intrepid!” or “Be Brave!” Jacqueline Atkinson, headteacher says: ‘we talk about how being brave or intrepid can take many different forms. It doesn’t always have to be a grand, dramatic gesture - sometimes it just means “having a go”. Our pupils are nurtured to have self-belief, perseverance and the ability to “bounce back”’ A factor picked up by the Independent Schools Inspectorate during a recent inspection: “The quality of pupils’ personal development is excellent….they show true resilience and take pride in living up to the school’s motto of being intrepid.” – Independent Schools Inspectorate Report 2017 If you would like to find out more, the open mornings provide the perfect opportunity.

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £100m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

Time to explore, grow and achieve AT GIGGLESWICK SCHOOL, LEARNING DOES NOT STOP AT THE DOOR OF THE CLASSROOM. urturing enquiring minds is at the heart of life and learning at Giggleswick. Classes are small and attention is individual. Every pupil is encouraged to explore their individual talents and skills and helped to develop their own particular strengths. Mark Turnbull, Headmaster, explains: “At Giggleswick, learning does not stop at the door of the classroom. We believe strongly in the benefits of participation across a wide range of activities.” Academic standards are high across a broad curriculum and the school embraces a breadth of ability, supporting each child to achieve their personal best. At Giggleswick, success is not just about grades and academic

skills. The school puts an equal emphasis on personal development, helping young people to build confidence, resilience and independence, and to take responsibility and initiative. Mr Turnbull adds: “Most importantly, we believe that education takes time. Children should be able to savour everything education provides, from the physics lab to the art room and sports fields. Yes, education must keep adapting to meet the needs of our increasing fast-paced modern world, but at Giggleswick we pride ourselves on giving children the time they need to think, explore, grow and achieve.” All of this happens across 200 acres of stunning Yorkshire countryside, where you’ll
find 500 years of heritage, exceptional modern facilities and a happy, welcoming community – a perfect environment to bring out the best in every child. Giggleswick is not an academically selective school, but children entering into Year 7 and Year 9 are required to sit an internal entrance assessment to assess and identify each child’s ability and potential. Scholarships and bursaries are also available to support children and their families in their application for a place at the school. A culture of excellence THE SUNDAY TIMES NORTHERN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL OF THE YEAR: WHY CHOOSE BRADFORD GRAMMAR SCHOOL? BY SIMON HINCHLIFFE, BRADFORD GRAMMAR SCHOOL HEADMASTER he Sunday Times has recognised the achievements of students at Bradford Grammar School in public examinations and the steady improvements we have made in this regard in recent years. In 2017, 83.8 percent of exams at A Level achieved grades A*- B, up 3.4 percentage points on last year. We also saw our best GCSE results with 73.7 percent of entries receiving A*/A grades, compared to 71.1 per cent in 2016. Alastair McCall, editor of the Sunday Times Parent Power, said: “Bradford Grammar is in a good place, combining strong academic performance with a caring culture that encourages all students to excel in their chosen field, both within and outside the classroom. The school explicitly puts pupils’ happiness at the centre of what it does. In an age of growing fears about the pressures put on children to succeed, this enlightened approach helps BGS stand out from the crowd. It’s a deserving winner of our award.” It is terrific that the cheerful dedication of our students to their studies has been recognised in such a special way. There is no one size fits all at BGS and everyone is encouraged be the best version of themselves in many different ways. We value scholarship, but not at the expense of developing the whole child, mind, body and spirit, through careful provision of a broad and

exciting programme co-curricular opportunities, for example, in sport, volunteering and the arts. League tables of any kind do not tell families everything they need to know about an extraordinary school like BGS, but it is wonderful to be noticed nonetheless. At BGS our students achieve highly. Why? The answer is down to our academically selective nature, our wonderful students and the exceptional teaching that makes such a difference and which adds significant value both inside and outside the classroom. A broad base of parental support and healthy home/school dialogue also helps to explain our collective achievements. BGS’s results last summer were superb, but as I said at the time, “beyond the headlines
we are keenly aware of the many successes that represent a personal triumph for those students who achieved or even exceeded expectations at all levels of achievement. Whilst we are rightly proud of the overall balance of the results that have been realised, it is the many individual stories of accomplishment and success that will stick long in the memory. Not everyone achieves the highest grades, but a life changing and affirming education is open to all at BGS and value is added across the board in many ways”. We stand by that. Learning at BGS is an active and enjoyable partnership between expert and learner and it is this dynamic that explains our success. School culture is everything. To really discover what any school is like you need to visit it, meet the students, drop into lessons, chat to staff and current parents and try to get a sense for the school’s ethos and values – its identity. We are thrilled that Bradford Grammar School has been awarded the title of ‘Northern Independent School of the Year 2018’ by the Sunday Times. We are delighted for our students. When viewed in context this lovely bit of recognition adds to a more complete impression of BGS, who we are and where we are going. Find out more www.bradfordgrammar.com/signup
