DR MUHAMMED RAASHED IS A CONSULTANT RESPIRATORY PHYSICIAN AT AIREDALE NHS TRUST AND AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL IN ROUNDHAY. Question: I feel breathless on doing things I could easily do before. My doctor sent me to a cardiologist who tells me my heart is normal but my breathlessness is not improving. What should I do? Dr Raashed replied:

Breathlessness is a common problem and one that increasingly limits our functional capacity with age and diminishing fitness level. There are a number of causes for this and often we are focussed on a diagnosis related to heart or lungs. Careful assessment of both heart and lung conditions to clarify their relative contribution is important. Accurate assessment of lung health by detailed history – particularly occupational history, examination, lung function test and a chest X-ray is a good start. Occasionally, a CT scan of lungs and further lung function testing is required for clarity. Breathlessness can be caused by a number of different things and changes in weight and loss of fitness and conditioning can contribute significantly towards it. Advancing age with diminishing musculoskeletal reserves does not help matters. Often losing ten per cent in weight (if you are overweight) helps greatly together by increasing level of fitness. Health and lifestyle choices we make early on in our lives maintain our functional capacity for longer. Whilst maintaining a normal body mass index (BMI) and a certain level of fitness; it is important that people report changes they experience in their lives to their doctors so that early investigation can be performed. It is important for people with lung conditions such as Asthma or COPD to take inhalers as prescribed and monitor their condition regularly to maintain optimum lung health. To find out your Body Mass Index (BMI), go to our online calculator at www.spirehealthcare.com/weight-losssurgery/our-weight-loss-treatments/gastric-bypass/

THE DIARY

Hot stuff YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HAT... AND EVERYTHING ELSE. WE SPEAK TO STAR OF THE FULL MONTY GARY LUCY AHEAD OF HIS APPEARANCE AT LEEDS GRAND THEATRE. he ‘lunchbox’ has, indeed, landed. Leeds theatre-goers are invited to leave their hat for the return of The Full Monty to Leeds Grand Theatre from 25-30 March. Telling the story of six out-of-work, impoverished steelworkers from Sheffield with nothing to lose, the Simon Beaufoy play has become one of Britain’s most successful stage shows featuring iconic songs by Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones. Produced by multi-award winning theatre producers David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers and directed by Rupert Hill, the all-star cast will be led again by Gary Lucy (Hollyoaks, EastEnders, The Bill, Footballers’s Wives, winner of Dancing On Ice). There’s a strong Hollyoaks connection too with the likes of Kai Owen (Torchwood, Hollyoaks) as Dave; and James Redmond (Hollyoaks, Casualty) as Guy, joining him on stage. Andrew Dunn (Dinnerladies, Bremner, Bird & Fortune) as Gerald; Louis Emerick (Coronation Street, Benidorm, Brookside, Last of the Sumer Wine) as Horse; and Joe Gill (Emmerdale) as Lomper make up the rest of the crew. Joining them will be Liz Carney as Jean, Amy Thompson as Mandy, Bryonie Pritchard as Linda and Keeley Fitzgerald as Sharon. Through these women we see the other side of the story, the challenging journies they face to stand by their men and how they ultimately take their hats off to them all. Gary Lucy has been playing Gaz in the touring stage production since September 2014, his first and only stage role to date; it’s clearly a role he enjoys. We caught up the TV-turned-stage star to find out more.

Do you have any links with any other regions in the UK?

Do you have a favourite song to dance to?

Ireland: On my mum’s side in the and also Northern Ireland in Port Rush. We were shipped off during the school holiday to stay with some relative or other, but they were the best times… often spent in the pubs! Everyone was very friendly and I made some very good friends.

Not really. Any of the Irish/Christmas songs. Anything that evokes a memory. Things like Danny Boy, The Pogues.

Where were you born and brought up?

What songs do you have on your gym playlist?

T

East London. I played football for Tottenham and Watford District county.

What have been your career highlights?

The Hollyoaks rape storyline. It was a real baptism of fire, I was only 17. It was the first time male rape had been covered on British television and it was extremely well received. I won best newcomer at the British Soap Awards. Footballers Wives… it was living the dream. The Full Monty was my first stage job. It would be difficult to follow so I’m not sure I’d do another one.

Do you have a favourite type of food/restaurant?

I love all food. I think Italian is my favourite and a good fry-up for hangovers! And I do like a Guinness. Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Wouldn’t you like to know! Who would you like to see do The Full Monty?

Posh and Becks. The Full Monty is at Leeds Grand Theatre from Monday 25 to Saturday 30 March. Book online at leedsgrandtheatre.com or call Box Office on 0844 848 2700.

When you were training or not acting, what other jobs have you done? Anything unusual/interesting?

I was a market trader. My mum and dad had market stalls and I did it as a Saturday job. But not for long... I got Dream Team for Sky One when I was 16. I also had a property company in Europe. It went well for a while, we had good run in Mallorca, Italy, Spain, Portugal. But eventually, like many others, we got caught by the financial crash because people stopped buying. What hobbies/interests do you have?

Football , strip clubs, casinos… LOL. Do you have any unusual/interesting skills?

The Windmill… jokes!

Any old garage tunes. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 21

Sun-kissed destination ELENA SOPHIA AHMADIAN, OF CYPLON HOLIDAYS, EXPLAINS WHY CYPRUS IS THE ULTIMATE WEDDING DESTINATION.

hen it comes to planning your big day, nothing is more magical than realising the ‘fairytale’ wedding you have long been dreaming of. A destination wedding is an enchanting experience; it’s just a simple case of finding the idyllic setting for your ceremony or reception, so that you can then enjoy not only your special day but your honeymoon or holiday too. Cyprus is the ultimate wedding destination, with its incredible azure crystal-clear waters, picture-perfect locations, luxurious properties and delectable cuisine and hospitality; all seamlessly merging together to create memories that will last a lifetime. With only a short flight away and affordable wedding venues, you can look forward to breath-taking views of the ocean and a selection of romantic and intimate spots for you to tie the knot; after all the Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty, Aphrodite, chose the island as her birthplace, emerging from the sea at the bay of Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite’s Rock), a must-see site at sunset.

Beauty at every turn Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean boasting unrivalled Blue Flag beaches, and heavenly gastronomy to indulge in, no matter what part of the island you choose to explore and host your wedding day at. With just a four hour drive between the west and east coast of the island, discovering its romanticism and spellbinding heritage is unavoidable; Cyprus oozes with romanticism, elegance and culture at every turn. The Western coastal city of Paphos, is a cultural hub filled with archaeological sites waiting to be discovered and explored. You can visit the Tomb of the Kings, at the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980, it is a mesmerising necropolis, carved out of solid rock, dating back to Hellenistic and Roman periods. Surprisingly, the tombs located there, are anything other than of kings, but rather burial grounds of aristocracy and high-ranking officials. From there take a trip to the House of

Dionysus, Theseus, Orpheus and Aion, unearthed in 1962 after a farmer ploughing his field discovered one of the many astonishing floor mosaics, each depicting their own mythology, to excite and fascinate your mind. Venture just outside the Paphos region and set your sights on the spectacular archaeological site of Kourion; a 2,000seat amphitheatre, overlooking the bluest of seas, before ending the day by experiencing the captivating and romantic sunset over Aphrodite’s Rock, where mythology’s magnificence is propelled into the present. Discover the fascinating spectacle of Larnaca’s Salt Lake where the elegant and sophisticated pink flamingos gather in their masses between November and March. For anyone who loves to explore nature, cycle along the paths of the Patticheio Park, enjoy a romantic picnic on the benches scattered around and absorb the astonishing views of the lake. In the summer walk across the dried Salt Lake at sunset, for an extra special moment. The town of Ayia Napa, has an air of

versatility and cultural significance, having been named from the charming monastery that sits eloquently in the centre of the town. The Monastery of Ayia Napa is a stunning medieval monastery, partially built underground, with a high wall surrounding it and perched outside it, is an ancient sycamore tree that is over 600 years old. Its name comes from ‘napa’, which means wooded valley in Ancient Greek language and many visitors flock to this site, aware of the town’s beauty and deep-rooted history.

The return of the flat HERITAGE HANDICAP MARKS THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE UK FLAT RACING SEASON AT DONCASTER. he flat season begins on Saturday 30 March with the traditional curtain-raiser, the Lincoln Handicap, sponsored by UNIBET. The heritage handicap marks the official opening of the UK flat racing season, showcasing world-class racing on Town Moor. Established in 1849 in Lincolnshire and run over a distance of two miles, the Lincolnshire handicap was transferred to Doncaster in 1965 following the closure of racing at Lincoln’s West Common, and became known as the Lincoln handicap. The highlight of the racecard is of course the UNIBET Lincoln heritage handicap worth a significant £100,000 in prize money. 2018 was a record breaking year, as we witnessed Addeybb’s impressive performance, securing a fourth victory for Yorkshire trainer William Haggas, who’s first success in the mile feature came in 1992 with High Low. Ridden by

jockey James Doyle the four-year old Addeybb won authoritatively by two and three-quarter lengths. The success of Addeybb enabled Haggas to join the record books, as the event’s leading trainer in recent years, equal to Jack Robinson, who celebrated wins between 1896-1910. Alongside exciting racing, this year’s Lincoln comes with a twist, a Motown twist. Doncaster Racecourse celebrates the best of soul; after racing has finished, Town Moor will become Motown Moor

with live music being provided by The Drifters lead vocalist, Roy Hemmings, and his eight-piece soul band. Roy is no stranger to big occasions and having performed in the White House on more than one occasion, this is an after party not to be missed! A full day at the races, and the best of Motown is just £20pp. Continuing the American theme into the weekend, the UNIBET Wild West Family Fun Raceday, on Sunday 31 March, will provide entertainment for the whole family, this Mother’s Day. Along with an afternoon of thrilling flat racing, families can expect a Western Stunt Show, Rodeo Bull, the Saloon Bar Shootout Gallery, Cactus Hoopla, and Cowboys and Cowgirls. In addition to the family fun day favourites there will be pony rides, fairground rides, and of course the must see Shetland Pony Race. A Mother’s Day family day out is available for just £19 per family.

Perfect choice WHEN AMY AND NEIL SAUNDERS WERE SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT VENUE IN WHICH TO TIE THE KNOT, THEY CHOSE THE MAJESTIC HOTEL, HARROGATE. SO, WAS IT THE FAIRYTALE WEDDING OF THEIR DREAMS? AMY LOOKS BACK ON A FATEFUL FIRST ENCOUNTER AND A FABULOUS DAY... How did you first meet? Neil and I both work in the children’s toy industry and every year there is a trade show at the Majestic which we attended for years, but our paths never crossed. Then in 2015 a mutual friend introduced us at the show and a lightning bolt moment was had! A year later Neil proposed to me at the Majestic and a year after that it felt perfect to get married at this special venue. What were your first impressions when you met the Majestic wedding planners? And how did that relationship pan out as your big day loomed? They were amazing from the moment we were engaged. It felt like they wanted to make our day as special as possible, 34 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

and they got to know us to understand the type of wedding we both wanted. Needless to say they have ended up as friends now and we always look forward to seeing the team whenever we are staying back at the Majestic. Did they go the extra mile to personalise your big day? Neil and I live in Southampton, so it wasn’t like we knew the Harrogate area very well. The wedding planners helped us to find florists, DJs and room dressers so that helped take the stress away from us on the run-up to our big day. Their recommendations came up trumps and the day couldn’t have gone any smoother. It was also a fantastic surprise to see personalised wedding card menus

that the team had put together for us... they were toy themed and really shouted out our connection perfectly. Did you have any particular/unusual requests that they were able to help you with? I have a personal preference for pink

Champagne and the planners were more than happy to have a fun tasting session with us to try out a great selection so we could pick the perfect choice for the day. What was on the menu? Were you impressed with the choice on offer and how it looked/tasted on the day? We had a lovely menu tasting session around six months before the wedding

and the team were very amenable with making changes to their standard menu so that we could have the exact choices we wanted. We allowed our guests to choose their meals from a selection and that made the wedding dinner feel more personable on the day, which we loved. The food itself was extremely tasty and all of our guests said that it was one of the best meals at a function they had ever had. This was all after we were running 45 minutes behind the planned timings, so we don’t know how the Majestic team pulled it off, but they certainly did. How big a wedding was it? How many guests? How did the Majestic cope? We had 70 guests at our wedding and they were coming from all over the country. The team ensured everyone was well looked after and if the Majestic team were ever stressed during the day we certainly never saw it! Was it a traditional or modern wedding? This wedding was the second time round for both of us so we wanted it be more of a party to celebrate our love for each other more than a traditional wedding. As it was a November wedding it was dark by the time we married at 4.30pm and we felt that added something unique to the experience. On top of that, when choosing my wedding dress I had featured on the TV show Say Yes to the Dress, so not only did the Majestic have us to attend to but a TV crew as well. Again, they were extremely accommodating and helped make that run smoothly too. Did you and any of the guests stay over? If so how did you find that

aspect of the hotel experience? Pretty much all of our guests stayed at the Majestic. Having travelled up from around the country many of our family and friends took the opportunity to experience the many sights of Harrogate so stayed the whole weekend. They all commented that the rooms were a great size, which is a great help when you are all getting dressed and ready for a wedding. I was given two adjoining rooms in which to get ready in, which was perfect for getting into my dress and for also having my bridesmaids around me the whole day. The next morning it was lovely to share a breakfast in the main restaurant with many of our close friends and kept the party going. Was there any single highlight of your wedding day that really stood out? Hearing the words ‘I do’ was definitely our favourite highlight, but actually the whole day was utterly extraordinary and we never believed we could have so much fun without a moment of stress.

there are some amazing shots of my wedding dress hung up in the huge bay window in my bedroom with the sun shining through. As the Majestic means so much to us and is such a grand building, it was important to us that it was a large part of the backdrop to many of our photos. As it was dark, the way the hotel is lit up with different colours at night certainly made for some magical photographs of just the two of us, whilst the shots of all of our guests standing on the main steps at the front of the hotel made for a great collective shot. Would you recommend other engaged couples to hold their wedding at the Majestic? If so, why? Without hesitation! The whole day was stress free, the team kept on making sure we were both happy throughout the day, and it had the party feel that we had dreamt of. The wedding planning team executed the best day of our lives and we can’t thank them enough for their hard work and efforts. The Majestic Hotel Ripon Road, Harrogate, HG1 2HU Tel: 01423 700300 www.thecairncollection.co.uk/hotels/ the-majestic/

When it came to photos what did you think of the hotel and its grounds as a backdrop for your wedding album? We are extremely pleased with our wedding photos. Whilst getting ready Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 35

A wedding for all seasons SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN OR WINTER... WONDERING WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO TIE THE KNOT? HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR PLANNNG A WEDDING IN EACH SEASON. BY RHIANA HUGHES.

38 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

ith Christmas and New Year having just passed, and Valentine’s Day on its way, if they haven’t already, our timelines and inboxes are sure to start filling up with engagement announcements from happy couples excited to tie the knot. If you’re newly engaged, planning a proposal or eagerly awaiting a ring in the near future, one thing you’ll have to consider as soon as the planning gets underway is what time of year you want to meet at the altar. There are plenty of ways to host a beautiful wedding in each of our 12 months, and we’re here to help you on your way down the aisle with our top five tips for planning a wedding in each season.

W

WINTER

SPRING

1. Choose wisely

1. Flower power

For those of you willing to brave a bit of a breeze, you’re likely to have more options available to you when it comes to choosing your venue. A lot of venues offer off-peak rates, so make sure you shop around not only to find the perfect place for you, but also to scout out the best deals if you’re trying to stick to a budget. Once you think you’ve found your dream location, make sure to pay a visit in the evening before you commit to anything. While a venue may be stunning in the daytime, you’ll want to be sure it’s equally as eye-catching after the sun has set.

With spring comes the blossoming of beautiful flowers, and there are countless ways in which florals can be seamlessly incorporated into your big day; whether it’s your dress featuring a subtle floral motif, your bouquet full of the season’s best and brightest, or a Kim and Kanye inspired flower wall (without the hefty price tag).

2. Check the heating If you’re getting married in the colder months, you’ll definitely need to check on how your venue stays warm. Most modern buildings and large hotels and homes are usually fine, but when it comes to older buildings like churches and barns, there’s often very little to no heating built in to the venue. Find this out ahead of time so that you can get to work on sourcing blankets and heaters to avoid numb fingers and toes in the pews.

2. Go natural If you’re going with the natural look with your dress and décor, why not follow suit with your hair and makeup? Opt for a messy bun or simple flowing tresses, paired with glowing, dewy skin and earthy eyeshadow.

3. April showers While hopefully the sun will be shining on your wedding day, spring can be one of the most unpredictable times of year when it comes to the weather in the UK. Make sure you’ve got a plan in place just in case the heaven’s open,

especially if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony. Stock up on wellies and umbrellas so you’re not stuck with soggy sulking guests.

4. Egg each other on If you’re able to dodge the dodgy weather and you’re planning your wedding around Easter, why not set up an Easter egg hunt? Fun for kids and the adults too, it’s a great way to break up the day. There are plenty of ways to include Easter in your big day without it seeming like an overwhelming theme. Try your hand at DIY and turn eggs into decorated place settings, or hand out bags of mini chocolate eggs as party favours.

5. Destination unknown If you’re not wanting to leave the success of your big day up to Mother Nature, then perhaps a destination wedding is the way to go for you, and there are countless countries where you’ll be almost guaranteed sun throughout the spring months.

3. Send RSVPs ASAP Give your guests plenty of notice ahead of your winter wedding, especially if you’re planning to tie the knot around the festive period as you may well find that people’s calendars start to fill up with work and family commitments. You’ll also want to give your guests a heads up if you’re planning to hold parts of your big day outdoors, so they can plan their outfits accordingly and make sure any little ones are wrapped up.

4. Don’t shy away from sparkle Whether it’s adding a touch of shimmer to your wedding gown, or you want your bridesmaids to shine, winter is the perfect time of year to add some sparkle. Shops will be full of glittery dresses ahead of the festive season, of if you’re getting married after Christmas and New Year, there are sure to be plenty of beautiful dresses on sale for a bargain price.

5. Get covered Wedding insurance is important in every season, but winter brings up some more obvious concerns when it comes to the smooth running of events. Plenty of providers will cover you if your big day is affected by bad weather, if suppliers can’t make it to the venue or even if wedding cars fail, so look around and find the right cover for you. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 39

Confetti SUMMER 1. Save the date As well as summer being the most popular season for couples to walk down the aisle, it’s also the time of year that most of us jet off on our holidays. Make sure you give your nearest and dearest plenty of notice once you’ve set the date to make sure they’re there to watch you say I do.

2. Hide from the sun You’re probably thinking why would I plan a wedding in the summer just to sit in the shade? As much as you should enjoy the weather on your wedding day, if the summers to come are anything like the one we were blessed with in 2018, you’ll still need to be careful. If your ceremony is outside, have parasols and sunglasses on hand for your guests, and if you think most of your reception will be spent outdoor too, don’t skimp on the sun cream and consider setting up a gazebo or tent for anyone not wanting to catch a tan.

3. Stay hydrated While we all love a drink at a summer wedding, make sure you’re well stocked up on water for you and your guests so you’re not spending the next day nursing a nasty hangover. A great way to keep cool is to hire an ice cream van and serve some boozy ice lollies.

4. Keep your flowers cool Make sure you’re thinking ahead when it comes to choosing the flowers for your big day. If you’re getting married on a particularly hot day, a lot of flowers are likely to wilt and this will be noticeable in any pictures you take later on in the day. Make sure your flowers are stored well before you walk down the aisle, or go for realistic artificial flowers instead.

AUTUMN 1. Embrace autumnal colours Autumn is full of beautiful hues of gold, rust and smooth browns, all colours which are easy to incorporate into wedding décor. As the autumn leaves are sure to be falling, why not embrace this and use this as the theme for your wedding stationary?

2. DIY An autumn wedding is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at DIY. Shabby chic and vintage looks often crop up at this time of year, and there are plenty of ways to get crafty in favour of splashing out on expensive centrepieces.

5. Make time for touch-ups

3. Try a theme

If you secure a good makeup artist, your makeup should last all day. When it’s hot out, however, there’s bound to be a few touch ups required. If budget isn’t an issue, keep your makeup artist on site all day for frequent fixes so you’re always looking picture perfect. To save a few pennies, invest in some quality blotting paper and setting powder.

People can often think themed weddings are a little on the cheesy side, but when done well they can really make a wedding stand out in all the right ways. Why not dot pumpkins around the venue? They come in all shapes, sizes and colours, so go black and white for the bride and groom or spray paint them gold for a touch of glamour. If

40 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Halloween isn’t your thing, how about turning your wedding into your own bonfire night celebration; see if your venue will allow an open fire, hand out some sparklers and blankets and end the night with a show.

4. Say ‘I do’ at dusk There are some spectacular sunsets throughout the autumn months, and if you don’t mind the cold, it might be worth saying your vows outdoors as the sun goes down. It’ll make for some stunning photographs and will get everyone feeling romantic.

5. Check your photographer’s portfolio As with a winter wedding, or any wedding taking place in the latter hours of the day, you’ll need to be mindful of how pictures will look when taken after dark. When choosing a wedding photographer to capture your day, ensure you take a good look through their body of work to see if their work is consistent through different times of day and whether it stands up in tougher weather.

Taste the difference WEDDING FOOD HAS COME A LONG WAY. FROM STREET FOOD TO SIZZLING BARBECUES, WE LOOK AT THE CATERING TRENDS TIPPED TO TAKE 2019 BY STORM.

Confetti hen it comes to planning a wedding, it can seem like the list of things to do is never-ending. Where do you start? Do you pick the date first or find the perfect venue and work around that? Do you find the dress of your dreams at the start of the process or are you worried you’ll fall out of love with it before the big day rolls around? How many guests should you invite? When do you need to pick out your wedding rings? A lot of the decisions you make when planning your wedding will be based on what you and your partner want. There will inevitably be a few times though, where you start to consider what will matter to your guests. Should you have a live band or a DJ? What kind of party favours should you hand out? Are you inviting children or is it an adults only do? Perhaps most importantly, what will they want to eat? Wedding food has come a long way since the three-course sit down meal and the age old question of ‘chicken or beef?’ While of course many do still opt for a more formal affair, the food being served to wedding guests is what’s changed considerably in recent years. We take a look at the catering trends tipped to be popping up at weddings throughout 2019 and the foreseeable future.

W

Brunch Daytime weddings can be significantly cheaper than those taking place in the afternoon or evening, and with the increasing popularity of brunch across the UK, this seems a no brainer for anyone choosing to get married early on in the day. Serve brunch favourites such as omelettes, crepes and pastries with mimosas and Bloody Marys. And there are all sorts of popular brunch spots to style yours on, so whether you’d rather mimic the more upscale restaurants or you’re more into the laid back, help yourself style, you’re sure to find the perfect way to incorporate this weekend tradition into your big day. Just maybe don’t make it bottomless if you want anyone to remember your day…

Late Night Snacks While brunch is a treat for those who love a mid-morning meal, some are deciding to add a bit of fun to the menu for those who stick around after the sun has set. Late night snacks aren’t new to

weddings, but where people often just opted to serve simple snacks like pizza and burgers, couples are now choosing to dish out their favourite takeaway cuisine or the food that they gravitate to when they get peckish late at night. If you’re getting married close enough to home, why not give your favourite local takeaway a ring and see if they can help you out?

Food Vans Catering vans are perfect if you’re set to say ‘I do’ outdoors during the summer months. They come in all shapes and sizes serving almost every type of cuisine imaginable, ranging from upscale canapes right down to your local kebab or ice cream van. Ideal for those who want more of a casual atmosphere, food vans allow the bride and groom to actually take time to grab a bite for themselves while mingling with their friends and family. Food vans also give the guests more freedom as they can eat when they please rather than being sat down to eat when they’re told to, and nobody wants to spend £100 a head for food to go to waste.

Getting married early in the day? Serving brunch to your guests could be a winner Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 47

Confetti confined to the conversations within the table the bride and groom have placed them on. While buffets make a lot of sense logistically, they’re never exactly a feast for the eyes. Boring beige food is being put behind us to make way for decadent selections of meats, breads and cheeses. Think oversized charcuterie boards, food as far as the eye can see. Not only for savoury items, grazing tables can be great for desserts too. Why not consider grazing tables to frame a more formal main course?

Non-traditional Cakes Plant-based snacks are bang on-trend – and delicious

Plant-based Bites People’s eating habits are changing more and more every year, and it’s likely that among your wedding guests you’ll have vegetarians, pescatarians, vegans, plain old omnivores and possibly a couple of guests who are gluten-free. While it’s great that these days when you go out to dinner there’s something on the menu for everyone, it becomes a little more difficult when you’re trying to keep costs down and keep things running smoothly at a big event like a wedding. There are some ways to please (almost) everybody though, and serving something that’s full of protein but meatfree is one way to go about it. There are countless dishes out there that are packed full of flavour and are entirely plant-based, so instead of trying to find out the individual dietary requirements of each and every guest, serving a vegan menu could be a cheap and easy solution.

notoriously fussy eaters, kids will enjoy the freedom of being able to choose how simple or exciting their food will be, and their mums and dads won’t have to worry about stopping for food on the way home.

Grazing Tables Grazing tables, if styled well and made up of high-quality ingredients, can be show-stopping. Just as with food vans, grazing tables allow guests the opportunity to socialise rather than being

“Wedding food has come a long way since the three-course sit down meal and the age old question of ‘chicken or beef?’.”

Dinner and a Show If you’re really wanting to wow your guests (and solve the picky-eater problem), then why not find a caterer who can work on-site preparing food to order in front of your guests? Dishes such as noodles, sushi or even a BBQ menu are easy enough to prepare and will have lower costs than a typical wedding feast, with all the atmosphere and excitement of dining at a high-end restaurant. This is also a great option if you’re inviting children to the wedding. As 48 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Wedding cakes can be an expensive part of the wedding, and you can be almost certain that the whole thing won’t get eaten. Instead of wasting a large chunk of your budget on something you feel you need rather than want, why not do something different for dessert. Couples are opting for dessert stations or even desserts designed to mimic the shape of a traditional cake, such as a crepe cake or profiterole tower. If done well, alternative cakes can look even better in photographs than the original as their unique designs shine, and don’t worry – you can still pop a little bride and groom somewhere if you still want to hold on to a bit of tradition.

A profiterole tower can make a tasty alternative to a traditional cake

Having worked on beauty moguls such as Lisa Eldridge and Katie Piper, Karen

Betts is considered a true pioneer of the permanent makeup technique in the UK, and her permanent makeup journey started long before the rise of the power brow. Over 20 years ago, she had a small beauty salon in South Elmsall, in which she rented a room to a tattoo artist for extra income. At the time, one of her closest friends was diagnosed with breast cancer, and subsequently underwent chemotherapy

BEAUTY

and a double mastectomy. Seeing how the cancer had stripped her friend of not only her hair, but of her confidence, Karen knew she had to do something to help. “I just went upstairs, got the tattoo gun and started to tattoo her brows. I then moved onto her breasts to recreate her areola. The confidence boost she got from doing this made me realise I had to learn how to do this professionally so I could help other people regain their confidence and sense of self. No one in the UK was doing anything like this at the time, so off to America I went!” Fast-forward 20 years, and Karen’s mission to ‘give the gift of confidence’ is evident throughout her whole portfolio of beauty brands as well as her work. She has built up amazing relationships with charities such as the Katie Piper Foundation, Leeds-based charity The Haven and The Alex Lewis Trust, to name a few. “To me, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the impact my treatments have on somebody’s whole life. Working with Katie Piper after her horrific attack was a long process, but seeing how she empowers other burn victims now is so empowering – I am incredibly proud of what she has achieved out of such a horrific situation.

“I regularly see clients through the Katie Piper Foundation, and they’re some of the most inspirational individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of working on. Tulsi is one of these lovely clients and we always have a giggle when she’s in clinic.” Karen also regularly welcomes Alex Lewis to her clinics. In 2013, Alex contracted a Strep A infection, which escalated into toxic shock syndrome, septicaemia and necrotising fasciitis. It ravaged his body and face, leaving doctors no choice but to amputate his limbs and cut away the gangrenous parts of his lips. Karen worked on the pigment alignment and 3D lip simulation treatment, and she’s providing Alex with free permanent cosmetics procedures for life. Karen has also made it her mission to help raise money for the Alex Lewis Trust – a fund set up to facilitate as full and independent a life as possible for Alex. Not only does Karen help change lives through her clinics, she’s also the MD of pioneering British beauty brands HD Brows, K.B Pro and Karen Betts Professional, as well as a director and cofounder of Nouveau Lashes. If she’s not working on new products at HD HQ in Leeds or catching up with the Nouveau Lashes team in South Elmsall, she can be found in one of her

three Karen Betts Professional clinics providing permanent make up. Karen is a real Yorkshire success story, and she continues to grow her brands on a global level. “Keeping my headquarters in Yorkshire is so important to me. It’s where I’m from, it’s where I started these businesses and I want to continue to see them flourish here. “I bought an old pub in South Elmsall many moons ago, and that is now the headquarters and Yorkshire training academy for Nouveau Lashes and K.B Pro. My London Karen Betts Professional Clinic is in a gorgeous building on Harley Street, but after a long day in clinic, there’s no better feeling than getting on the train back up north!” For more information and to find your nearest Karen Betts Clinic, visit www.karenbetts.com

Ultimate experience WHILE AFTERNOON TEAS HAVE BECOME DE RIGUEUR, NOBODY DOES IT QUITE LIKE BETTYS, WRITES RHIANA HUGHES. fternoon tea has been a ritual enjoyed since the early 19th century. Originally designed as a mid-afternoon snack used to tide people over until their evening meal, today, it’s now more often used to celebrate milestones and special occasions. A quintessentially British tradition, afternoon tea encourages us to take some time out from the busy schedules ever-present in our modern lives, and spend an hour or two indulging in some of the finer things in life instead. While afternoon teas are popping up

A

left, right and centre across the country in quaint cafes, country pubs and garden centres, nobody does it quite like Bettys. Afternoon tea at Bettys is famous the world-over, with the Lady Betty Afternoon Tea being the ultimate way to experience everything they have to offer. At Bettys Harrogate, Lady Betty Afternoon Tea is served in the Imperial Suite, a spacious and elegant room, with large windows providing stunning views of The Stray and flooding the room with natural sunlight. Walking into the room, the soft notes

coming from the house pianist and the slight hum of conversation from your fellow diners put you at immediate ease, while their smiling faces and half empty cake stands fill you with envy as you can’t wait to be presented with your own. Each table in the Imperial Suite is beautifully set; Bettys bespoke bone china and shining silverware perfectly placed upon crisp white linens, each table adorned with fresh flowers, and comfortable seats pulled out by Bettys’ excellent waiters and waitresses.

FOOD & DRINK

Looking around it was evident that celebrations were being had across the room. From couples celebrating anniversaries and mothers and daughters celebrating birthdays, to groups of women raising their glasses to a brideto-be. Though not quite the place for a sash or a veil, Bettys is quickly becoming a hotspot for hens. Times are changing and ladies are choosing to host a more sophisticated lunch to celebrate their upcoming nuptials in favour of the wild hen parties we’ve seen in past years – and we can see why. After being seated at our table, our waitress talked us through the menu before offering us a glass of fizz. I opted for a glass of Moutard Rose Prestige Champagne, which was a wonderful way to start the afternoon. The appetiser of pea, cucumber and tomato cocktail was served swiftly afterwards. While assured by my companion that the starter was perfectly light and refreshing, I personally have never been one to enjoy cucumber, no matter how many times I’m told ‘it’s basically water’. Our waitress was more than accommodating, however. Ensuring that I wasn’t left without a fresh palate with which to enjoy the rest of the afternoon tea, she happily replaced my appetiser, offering me a fresh fruit salad which I thoroughly enjoyed. When it came to ordering our tea, she once again was more than helpful, ensuring we fully understood the menu and that she understood our tastes before recommending we try the lemongrass and ginger tisane. A lively and warming blend containing fragrant lemongrass and ginger root, it was the perfect caffeine-free pick me up. After our appetisers were cleared, we were served two savoury dishes. roulade and a miniature pork and apple pie. At the time both left us wanting more, but as we worked our way through the tiers of the cake stand we realised that each portion was perfectly sized. The presentation of the cake stand stops everyone in their tracks. Phones and cameras come out as jaws drop and eyes widen at the variety of treats on display. No two things look alike, and despite temptation calling you to start at the top with the assortment of sweet treats, logic (and afternoon tea etiquette) tells you that you know you’ll regret your decision if you do. Ham and tomato pâté, chicken and tarragon and egg mayonnaise sandwiches are each served on different yet equally delicious breads, all made using fresh and locally sourced ingredients where possible. Small and light, each with their own little hints of sweetness, they were the perfect buffer between the savoury selection and the scones. Scones at Bettys are freshly baked throughout the day, served still warm with accompanying jam and clotted cream. They’re not just any scones either, with citrusy lemon scones and rose scones delicately flavoured with rose petals. If you’ve ever watched The Great British Bake Off, you’ll know how easy it is to let the flavour of rose overpower a bake, yet here, it seemed the perfect amount of rose was added, lightening the dessert, which can often be heavy and dense. We took our time to enjoy our scones,

knowing that the further up the cake stand we went, the closer we were to our experience at Bettys coming to an end. Presented to us at the top of the cake stand were six different miniature cakes. The lemon religieuse was by far my favourite, as I love anything with a bit of a zesty kick, while my companion couldn’t bear to share the gooseberry macaroon (and even bought a couple more in the shop on the way out). Served alongside these were the pistachio and chocolate dacquoise slice, miniature Battenberg, fresh berry meringue and chocolate and passionfruit cube. All managed to somehow be delectably rich while appropriately light, rounding off our afternoon tea experience perfectly. Lady Betty Afternoon Tea is more than just tea and scones, but a sensory experience from start to finish. Exceptional service meets impeccable food and drink for an afternoon to remember. EATING OUT

‘F’ for flavour THE FOOD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF AT LOW-KEY LEEDS EATERY, OX CLUB, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. s a solid fuel grill restaurant, with a fancy state-of-art cooking station imported from Michigan and bags of charcoal and kindling artfully placed like scatter cushions on the floor, I’d expected the open kitchen at Ox Club to be all about eye-catching theatrical moments. Flames leap in the air, causing customers to gasp and applaud like they’re watching a circus fire-eater... you know the drill. How wrong can you be? From my window seat in the small, contemporary diner in Leeds city centre the gang of young chefs seemed to be going about their business in a calm, collected manner. There was not a flash of raw flame to be seen but from the first mouthful another f-word leapt to prominence... flavour. All that burning, charring and smoking is not for show; it’s all about injecting maximum taste into every single item on the menu. No Wonder Ox Club has been garlanded with five-star reviews and praise in the latest editions of the Michelin and Good Food Guides. Situated on The Headrow in a former mill house in a multi-floor venue next to a beer hall, Ox Club aims to showcase the best of Yorkshire’s seasonal produce and the menu, while small enough to be displayed on a single sheet of A4, is inventive and certainly not lacking in choice. After dangerously good bread that instantly broke my friend Ian’s resolve to ‘go steady on the carbs’ our starters illustrated Ox Club’s strengths perfectly.

A

74 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

My grilled mackerel (£6) had been torched to perfection so the skin was crisp and the flavour of this moist, plump fish was simultaneously rich and sharp. The dressing of soy, kisho (a paste regarded as the secret weapon of Japanese cooking) and shiso (from the mint family) ensured every mouthful was to be savoured. My companion, an old friend from our days as sports writers where a working dinner meant the chippy closest to whatever match we were covering that night, was similarly enthused about his succulent and flavoursome wood pigeon (£8) with black pudding, redcurrants and parsnips. Mains were equally impressive but first a word about the stupendous sides that accompanied them. I was intrigued by the prospect of smoked mash (£4) and it was a revelation, super smooth and bursting with savoury flavour, raising the humble bashed spud to new levels of taste and (honestly) sophistication. Artichokes (£5) cooked in smoked beef fat with pickled artichoke also made the tastebuds tango; cauliflower (£5) with a gutsy romesco sauce, roasted almonds and sherry vinegar more than held its own; chips (£3.50) were a gorgeous, deep golden brown and as good as you’ll find. Just fill the table with sides to share and you’ll have a feast to live in the memory. As it was, my main of guinea fowl (£19) in a lentil ragu and Ian’s onglet steak (£20) with horseradish and bone marrow confit and roscoff onions continued the theme of strong, wholesome flavours perfectly.

Service was relaxed and friendly but, as Ian pointed out, he could not remember eating anywhere recently where the staff were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They know they are part of something special, and they’re delighted you dropped by to share the experience. There’s a great wine list and if you’re not sure what will go with your food choices good advice is always on hand. From the whites a French Picpoul de Pinet (£5.50) and a Tsiakkas Xynisteri (£7.50) from Cyprus delivered flavour and fragrance and a hearty but not too overwhelming Primitivo Puglia (£6) was the perfect match for both the guinea fowl and the steak. For desserts I could not resist a first taste of the year for Yorkshire rhubarb (£6), a sharp-sweet delight served alongside burnt Basque cheesecake. But the real revelation was Ian’s bread and butter pudding (£6), or to be more accurate the totally addictive blood orange marmalade ice-cream it was paired with. There was a bitter marmalade tang from the first spoonful, glorious in its own right and ideal to accompany the sweet pudding. The low key vibe suits Ox Club well; food this good speaks for itself and the team responsible for cooking and delivering it is fired up with an enthusiasm that is totally infectious. Valued and encouraged MOORFIELD SCHOOL IS A HAPPY PLACE WITH A SENSE OF PURPOSE. HERE’S WHY... oorfield is a school which really lives the values it upholds. We strongly believe that the best route to success and happiness comes from celebrating the things we do together which make us a family, as well as making sure that every individual feels known, valued and encouraged. This nurturing approach is at the heart of what we do and it is something that you can sense and feel when you are at the school. Children are celebrated for the kindness and consideration that they show to others, both within school and in their wider communities, including doing their bit to help with global issues. We are able to recognise what each child feels confident and strong about and work with them to develop this. We also help them to identify and work on those areas they don’t

feel so comfortable about, supporting them to make the progress they need to. This progress and success isn’t limited to just their literacy and numeracy skills; we embrace a rich and meaningful curriculum filled with opportunity where all skills are considered valuable and all children can shine. We find that success in one area of the curriculum usually brings success in others. Curiosity, independence and resilience are key words here and we have the environment and the knowhow to really help our children to develop and understand the importance of these skills. As we work with our families throughout their child’s time at Moorfield, it is the way in which these vital qualities manifest themselves at home and at school that is a great source of pleasure to all involved. Above all, Moorfield is a sincere school. We want the best for our children and families and we know that positive open relationships between us all is the way to achieve this. Since it was established, the school has changed in all sorts of interesting ways. This sincerity and these values however have held true throughout, they are what defines the

school and what shapes our work. There is something at the school which is distinctly Moorfield and there always will be. Moorfield is a happy place with a sense of purpose. Our focus is to provide every child at the school with an invigorating and fulfilling school experience and an outstanding education. If you are interested to see what we can do for your child, EVERY DAY IS OPEN DAY and you are welcome to visit at any time. We look forward to meeting you. Let their imaginations run wild... HELP YOUR CHILDREN CREATE MAGICAL MEMORIES BY VISITING LITTLE ALLIGATORS IN HARROGATE. hen we think back to our childhoods, one of the things that made them so special were the toys we played with. Along with our imaginations, there was nothing we couldn’t do. As we grow older and start our own families, there are many things we want for our own children, and though times are changing, we want them to look back at their youth with some of the same fond memories with which we remember ours. While tablets and computers are increasingly being incorporated into children’s lives, there’s still only so much time that we want our children glued to screens, so why not help your children create their own magical memories by visiting Little Alligators in Harrogate? Toys allow children an opportunity to express themselves, giving them a chance to be creative and learn new things, and with a range of toys in stock for girls and boys from pre-school age to juniors, Little Alligators is sure to have something to get your little ones brains ticking. Lois Rendle opened the business in November 2014. With four children of her own and a passion for stocking

unique toys and gifts, she has first-hand experience when it comes to selecting toys that kids will enjoy throughout their childhoods. “All of our products have been handpicked by me and have had a lot of thought put into them,” says Lois. “We stock toys from big European brands and smaller UK names to offer a range of gorgeous gifts you won’t find anywhere else. “Some customers say they struggle to find presents for school friends, so we are proud to have a fantastic range and to deliver a personal service.” As well as stocking a wide range of toys, Little Alligators is also home to a range of books for all ages, colouring books, homeware – including mobiles, garlands, neon signs and LED lights, and clothing such as funky pyjamas and colouring in t-shirts. The majority of the toys in-store are wooden, modern and always in eyecatching bright colours, and the team even provide a gift wrapping service for

those of you not too skilled with the sticky tape. Once you’ve paid one visit to Little Alligators, you’re sure to be back. So why not join their loyalty scheme? Register your email address and collect points towards discounts up to 25 per cent off. They’re also doing their bit for the environment, giving you a discount with #bagsofloyalty when you use their reusable bag. Little Alligators are online too, selling their full range on the internet, with customers making orders from all over the world. They also offer a click and collect service, as well as free delivery for those living within a 15-minute drive of the store. So whether you’re looking to decorate your child’s room, purchase a present for a niece or nephew, or you’re wanting to see where your own little one’s imagination can take them, visit Little Alligators to find a beautiful range that is a pleasure to buy as much as it is a pleasure to give.

I am my unlocked potential… HOW COMMUNITY AND WELLBEING GO HAND IN HAND AT WOODHOUSE GROVE. e are proud and delighted at Woodhouse Grove to have been awarded the Optimus Education Wellbeing Award for Schools – making us the first independent school in the UK to achieve this accolade, which has been developed in partnership with the National Children’s Bureau. A key aspect of the award is its focus on the long-term culture of a school, embedding an ethos where mental health is regarded as the responsibility of all; a community enterprise. Community is what The Grove thrives on. “At The Grove, each pupil is viewed as an individual but is part of a great community,” says Anthony Cadman, Deputy Head Pastoral. “Without doubt, the sense of community is something highly valued by pupils, staff, parents and visitors alike.” Whilst we are a strong community, we take care not to make The Grove a “bubble”. Our pupils are encouraged to be outward facing, look beyond the school gates and make a difference. As a school we are small enough that each and every student is known and nurtured whilst large enough to ensure that pupils

learn and mature in a diverse and inclusive environment, preparing them for life after school. At The Grove, we have always been known for our unique approach to education, focusing on developing the individual, helping each pupil grow into the very best version of themselves that they can be. Mr Cadman points out that: “Becoming the best that you can be is not limited to one aspect of school life. Being a Grovian is about more than academic success, sporting prowess or performing in the theatre. It is about becoming a more rounded individual, ready to meet the challenges the world beyond education will throw at you.” In fact, the Grove community continues to flourish once pupils have left the school. The Old Grovian network is a very special one, both in terms of strength of friendships and the vast variety of professions and industries covered – from medicine and accountancy to the West End and the Red Arrows; Grovians can be found everywhere. And many return to the school to offer help and advice to

present pupils. From the ages of 13 to 18, James Lockwood, Woodhouse Grove’s headmaster, walked the same corridors as the students he has care over now. This history, this sense of growing up as a Grovian, gives James a depth of insight into the school above and beyond that of most head teachers. He says: “Woodhouse Grove is more than a school; we are a learning community, in which ‘wholeness’ is the key. This ‘wholeness’ flows from living and working alongside others; learning how to give and take; when to follow and when to lead; how to deal with people of very different temperament and character; of understanding the nuances of a shared life; this is what makes The Grove such a special place. As in any community, we take responsibility for each other’s wellbeing. It is wonderful that this has been acknowledged through the Wellbeing Award for Schools.”

“I am an individual, yet I am part of something incredible. I am Grovian.”

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? MAVEER SINGHPANGU’S GOT SPRING IN HIS SIGHTS… s it just me, or have we somehow managed to fastforward through winter and head straight into spring? Time has flown by so far this year, and I’m really feeling 2019; not only did I get some holidays pencilled into my social calendar, but we’ve also pulled in some amazing new clients at PGHL and I can’t wait to get to work on some exciting projects. I threw my first Pangu Party of 2019 at Oracle, where over 300 glamorous party people danced the night away. It was such a success I’ll be back in March with my legendary ‘White Party’ on Saturday 22nd. Talking of parties, we also threw an amazing launch party for one of my favourite clients, Roxy Leisure, who debuted the fantastic new concept, Loop

on Merrion Street just a few weeks ago. Loop is essentially a party-cumkaraoke bar, albeit with a Roxy twist. So, guests can expect both beer and Prosecco pong, as well as retro arcade machines that nod back to the eighties and nineties. The cocktails are also on-point, with a mixture of classics and signature sips. Team PGHL even managed to find time for a bit of an impromptu sing-song at the launch, with Jordan ‘livin his best life’ thinking he was George Ezra. The award for the biggest party of 2019 so far has to go to the Lost & Found Leeds Club’s first birthday bash. Over 300 people showed up to experience the fabulous gin cocktails and it really went through the roof. Hard to believe it’s been a year since this stunning venue launched, but then time really does fly when you’re having fun! Speaking of fun, in a bid to flex my culinary muscles, I found some spare time to enrol in the cookery school at The Grand in York with my BFF Shelly. I have always ‘winged it’ when it came to hosting dinner parties (by getting someone else to do all the cooking!), but I can proudly say I learnt a trick or two. I took the ‘Perfect Steak’ course, held in a pristine kitchen with incredible interior design, and it’s an experience I can’t

recommend enough. Head tutor Andrew Dixon and his team literally made me feel so at ease and even managed to make a novice like me feel like Madhur Jaffrey! There’s close to 50 courses for you to take your pick from, and I’ll be returning soon now that I have the cooking bug. We’ve got some big things happening as we head into March. We’re finally launching Yard & Coop on Merrion Street, which is a real game-changer when it comes to gourmet fast JoJo food. Their buttermilk fried chicken is already legendary in Manchester and Liverpool, and their cocktail menu is equally as impressive. I’ll be in Dubai for my friend’s wedding when the restaurant launches, but

I’ve had a preview of their food and drink, and trust me, you’re in for a treat! I’m also so excited for our very first Pink Ladies and Friends’ event, which launches on Thursday 7 March 12-3pm in conjunction with International Women’s Day. The event kicks off with a luxurious lunch at Issho, and features guest speakers JoJo (Capital Breakfast), Christine Yorath (the original footballer’s wife and property developer) and Amy Harrison (Candlelighters), who will share their

thoughts and inspiration on everything relating to women in business. So that’s it for this month, I’m going to have to love you and leave you, as I’m packing my suitcase and jetting off to Dubai for my friend’s wedding! Thanks for reading and I look forward to catching up with you in April but in the meantime, follow me on social media on Instagram @maveer123 @pg_hl to see what I’m up to!

Year 9 at Bradford Grammar School

Achieve more than you ever thought possible

Do smaller class sizes matter to you? Is your child flourishing at their current school? Are you looking for a world-class curriculum? Do you want your child to access excellent teaching and a wide range of activities?

We have a dedicated pastoral team of form tutors, Heads of Year, school nurses and a school counsellor; many of our Sixth Form students are mentors for our younger pupils, working hard alongside the teaching staff to care for the emotional wellbeing of every child.

At Bradford Grammar School (BGS), our results speak for themselves. We can help your son or daughter become the very best they can be by having access to a first-class education. We encourage all our students to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities chosen from our extensive list of sport, music, drama and a host of other opportunities. In an era of growing concern about children’s mental health and wellbeing it is essential that our students have access to a well-balanced, excellent education and outstanding pastoral care.

Our students’ talents are nurtured and they are all given the individual attention they need to excel. Alex Ramage, who joined BGS in Year 9, says: “BGS challenged me academically and I’ve made some great friends who, I’m sure, will be friends for life. I’ve really enjoyed my time at the school. It was definitely the right move for me. I feel now that I’ve got so much more out of my education – both socially and academically.”

Nurturing sporting talent

EXCELLENCE OPPORTUNITY HAPPINESS We believe that if you lay the right foundations for sport, it creates stronger athletes. It’s why it’s important for our pupils to focus on developing key skills which are transferable such as using the Performance Gym and experiencing a range of different sports. The right foundations provide solid grounding for longer sporting careers.
