Limitless boundaries WOOD SPECIALISTS HARESIGN BESPOKE PRIDE THEMSELVES ON THE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF FURNITURE ALONG WITH EXCLUSIVE CONSTRUCTION WORK. uality, unique and bespoke are key words when selecting the right construction, joinery or furniture service. But Haresign Bespoke are the only company in the area who offer all this – plus the opportunity to select the exact tree you would like to use for your project. Haresign Bespoke is based on 185 acres of idyllic farmland on the outskirts of Wetherby and is well-placed to serve the people of Harrogate, Leeds and beyond. When you visit their business centre and workshop, you will be taken to the nearby woodland where you can select an ash, sycamore, oak or beech tree, then their dedicated and experienced team will take care of the rest.

“All of our wood is naturally dried, rather than kiln dried, meaning you can see these natural patterns in the wood,” says managing director James Haresign. “None of the wood goes to waste. We use every element. The leftover wood is made into logs or charcoal. Everything else goes in the chipper and is used in our eco-friendly biomass boiler to heat our whole building.” His team also plant a number of trees to replace the ones they have felled to create an ethical and sustainable source. With a background in joinery and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, James set up the construction side of the company in 2010. As the company developed, he realised there was an increasing demand for bespoke furniture.

They now specialise in the design and production of furniture along with exclusive construction work. Their unique creations are all handcrafted, and they work with their clients right through, from design and production to installation. From fitting unique kitchen cabinets and bedroom wardrobes, to creating new builds from the ground up, no job is too big or too small for James and his team. “Every job is of interest to us and anything is achievable. Our extensive construction background has allowed our creative minds to explore the limitless boundaries of design and architectural joinery. “Some people know what they want, they just can’t explain it, so it is up to us to lead

them through it and put it in words our team can understand. “We’re not just a construction company. We have design architects and structural engineers on board who can turn your dream into a reality. Everyone works for me and is a trusted member of the team. We always fulfil our promises.” What’s more, the Haresign team treat every

home they work on like their own and strive to be clean, tidy and polite. As well as working on residential projects, they’ve also been involved in some impressively ambitious projects for businesses such as The Acorn wellness retreat centre in North Yorkshire and Harrogate Water Brands. Many of their designs are inspired by the simplicity of nature, keeping many aspects of

the trees in mind, but they are also dedicated to being ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. James’s team will manage all electrical and plumbing work to thier own high standards. From setting up sensor lighting that comes on when you walk in the room, to controlling everything in the house through the click of a smart phone app, they can design and deliver the homes of tomorrow today. “I take enormous pride from our clients when they see what we have done for them. In any business customer satisfaction is really important and every one of those moments means a lot to me, especially when you surpass their expectations. “We deliver a personal service and we really can produce anything within the industry. I know the possibilities are endless, and that really does make us unique.” To arrange a consultation and to experience a private woodland tour, contact Haresign Bespoke today, or visit their website to view their inspiration photo gallery. Your new album 24Hrs is your fourth consecutive number one album – that must be a great feeling?

Amazing. I never expected in my wildest dreams that I would’ve got this far, absolutely delighted – so thank you. You mention this is your most honest album to date, why is that?

I felt like writing about what’s actually been genuinely happening and I am so happy that people like it. I’ve wrote most of my hits and this album was an opportunity to do something different and keep my fans interested along with showing them a different side to me. Is there a particular track on this album you’re most proud of?

24Hrs and Flaws. 24Hrs because it was very different and something production wise I’ve never done before and Flaws as I feel like it was one of the best songs me and the guys have ever written.

We’ve been doing it for the last six/seven years. One of your first racecourse shows was in York in 2010, will it be nice to come back?

I wanted to come and play in York because the shows during The X Factor were so important and I loved doing them. It’s going to be fantastic to be back in York six years later and hopefully lots of people will turn up and enjoy themselves. It must be great being able to get out and play to your fans, especially without them having to travel a few hours?

These are the shows you get to see the real people, they’re family days. The feel at the racecourse is so different and people get to see a different vibe, different set and sound. It’s refreshing for me to do a gig like this and I’m really looking forward to having a day out with my friends and fans. There’s always been fantastic reactions at the racecourse to music nights, why do you think that?

That’s the great thing about doing these events, it’s about going to different parts of the country that other artists might not have been in a while. It really gives people in the areas a chance to come and see me as they might not have been able to come to the arena tours. So it’s nice to be able to bring the show to them. For me, it’s just great to be involved and I can’t wait to get out to see all the fans – it’s going to be a great one.

Have you got any pre-stage rituals?

Me and the band have a little huddle up before the show and sing our team song.

Food, glorious food THE GREAT BRITISH FOOD FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR MAY BANK HOLIDAY. WE SPOKE TO FESTIVAL DIRECTOR DANIEL MAYCOCK. fter the success of last years’ events, the Great British Food Festival is back for 2017 and promises to be even bigger and better. The event (27-29 May) is held in the stunning Harewood House grounds and organisers have added a fantastic number of new features including a drinks area, grow your own talks and goody bags for the first 1,000 people of the day. The event also has tastecard as its headline sponsor this year. There will be an array of attractions including the popular Men v Food stage, comprising of three challenges each day, forging walks and an artisan market. Visitors will also be able to watch a number of local and celebrity chefs demonstrate signature dishes and bakes. The organisers have gone a bit Bake Off mad this year, so you’ll be able to see demonstrations from Val Stones, Howard Middleton and Luis Troyana. If you are a budding home baker, you can enter the cake-off where you’ll have the chance to win a fabulous prize along with free entry into the show. Children will be kept well entertained as they have the opportunity to learn new cookery skills in the Diddy Cook Classes. There’ll also be bouncy castles, rides, a free craft corner and a circus skills workshop. To add that bit extra to the day, there will be top local bands playing throughout. It is the perfect summer family day out, where you can sample some amazing food, relax with some real ale and pick up some new cookery skills – all in beautiful surroundings.

22 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

We spoke to Festival Director Daniel Maycock about the highly anticipated weekend. Why did you want to start the Great British Food Festival?

To be honest, at the time there weren’t many good foodie events and we thought we could create one, so we decided to give it a go. We wanted to make a great British family day out that everyone can enjoy. What does it bring to the local community?

I hope that it brings people together for a nice day out. It is a good chance to bring everyone together and have a nice relaxed time. The events are growing each year and we tend to have up to 18,000 people and over 100 traders who will travel to the local area and lots stay over too, so there is some lift to the local economy as well. What are some things to look forward to this year?

Well, we’ve added a few new things like the Bake Stage, Get Growing Stage – for budding gardeners, along with some wine and drinks talks. We have also looked to improve with even better street food and producers. For more information or to book your tickets head over to www.greatbrtishfoodfestival.com or www.harewood.org. ENJOY EQUALITY PHIRA LONDON ARE BREAKING BOUNDARIES, PRODUCING JEWELLERY THAT IS NO LONGER CONFINED TO MEN OR WOMEN. BY RACHEL MARTIN.

FASHION

nisex jewellery can, in many ways, trace its roots back to the bold male film and music stars that opted for jewellery that surpassed the typical ‘masculine’ boundaries. These icons, guys like Johnny Depp – those few shining examples granted public permission to adorn themselves with more sparkle than a Vegas showgirl – were pioneers. And now, it finally seems that jewellery fashions have caught up. Granted, brands are taking notice, and the men’s jewellery market is growing at expedited speed. From such luxury houses as Bottega Veneta and Saint Laurent to smaller labels like Tom Woods and Giles and Brother, it appears that everyone is seizing the opportunity to offer the newest version of the non-binary bohemian touch. Even women’s jewellery designers are jumping on the bandwagon, offering unisex pieces or limitededition lines. One such brand recognising the changing attitude towards the traditional masculine and feminine divide is Phira London, a contemporary unisex brand that creates authentic, understated jewellery to be enjoyed by both men and women. Founded in 2016 by Macdara Duncan and Eleanor Frankpitt, Phira London makes unisex jewellery with a simple aesthetic and a weighty feel, and the new, experimental unisex collection ranges from a modern take on the traditional signet ring to Aztec designs, available in solid 925 silver and 18ct gold plated. Macdara and Eleanor met in 2008 and since meeting they harboured the idea to create a non-gender brand that holds ambiguity. Their belief is that a piece of jewellery should not be confined to either sex and the brand strives to encourage and promote equality by creating products to be worn by all. Macdara and Eleanor take inspiration from all walks of life and most poignantly they are inspired by London as a city; as it is filled with culture, creativity and diversity. Further influences are the late David Bowie and Patti Smith, both of which question and blur gender norms and boundaries. “Both have paved the way for us to make our own identities and have inspired the brand to look beyond gender definition by being the same for all,” says Macdara. “As Smith states, we have ‘the right to create, without apology, from a stance beyond gender or social definition’”. Individuals are able to wear the rings in multiple ways, whether it’s on a different finger, stacked or upside down. “Observing how each sex can have a different approach or view on something, neither right nor wrong, has been fascinating,” Eleanor adds. When the brand launched, Phira London made only silver rings, each designed and handmade in London using the highest quality materials and the very best

craftsmanship to ensure product longevity, but they will soon launch a gold collection, bangles and much more. With so many rumblings and smaller steps taken in the world of fashion, it was only a matter of time before jewellery also offered a unisex offering. And this time, it’s now. A piece of jewellery no longer needs to be confined to men or women and Phira London would like to increase awareness of this deep rooted stigma so we can all enjoy equality, and consequently, liberty. DR LEE GRAHAM PHD MBCHB MRCP IS A CONSULTANT CARDIOLOGIST SPECIALISING IN ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY. HE WORKS AT LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS TRUST AND PRIVATELY AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL IN ROUNDHAY. QUESTION:

I have been experiencing palpitations for a few months now and this is often accompanied by shortness of breath and dizziness. Do you think that there could be something seriously wrong with me? I have made an appointment to see my GP. Do you think I might need to see a specialist? ANSWER:

Palpitations are a common symptom and refer to an awareness of your own heart beating. Patients may feel their heart beating at a normal rate, a faster rate, which may be regular or irregular, or feel their heart skipping or missing beats. Palpitations often cause a sensation of fluttering or pounding in the chest and are usually intermittent. Many people will experience palpitations at some stage in their lives but most do not have a serious underlying heart condition. However, the sensation is often unpleasant and can cause considerable worry or distress. If your symptoms persist or are associated with symptoms such as breathlessness or dizziness then you should initially consult with your GP who may arrange for you to have an electrocardiogram (ECG). This records the electrical activity of the heart and whilst it is often normal in patients with palpitations, can sometimes pick up an abnormal heart rhythm or “arrhythmia”. You may also be referred to a cardiologist, often one who specialises in abnormal heart rhythms (Cardiac Electrophysiologist) for further assessment and tests to identify if there is a problem. These may include a 24-hour ECG recording if your palpitations occur frequently or an exercise ECG if your palpitations are triggered by exertion. Other tests such as a cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) can sometimes be helpful in identifying patients with underlying structural heart disease. Depending on the cause, palpitations may not require specific treatment although sometimes medication is tried initially. Sometimes a slightly more invasive test called an electrophysiological (EP) study can be performed to identify extra electrical connections in the heart which may cause fast abnormal heart rhythms called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). If these can be identified then catheter ablation can be performed at the same time. This is often very successful and can offer a cure for many patients.

Summer beauty It’s easy to neglect our skin in the summer. With the warmer, more humid weather it means skin isn’t as dry and itchy as it is in winter. However with the sun shining it’s important to be diligent with your skin care regime.

GET SET FOR SUMMER LOOK YOUR BEST THIS SUMMER WITH THESE HEALTH AND BEAUTY TIPS FROM HANNAH SANDERS. ummer has finally arrived, but just because the sun is shining doesn’t mean you should become lax on looking after your body and mind. It’s now more important than ever to focus on keeping your body happy, so we’ve put together some top summer lifestyle tips.

S

AVOID SUNBEDS If you want some summer skin colour, avoid the tanning beds and choose a safer option such as selftanning towels or gradual lotions. However always check the ingredient labels to ensure the base formula is non-toxic.

Wear safe, non-toxic suncream (even on cloudy days)

Use a lotion of at least SPF 30 in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. If you have sensitive skin, a mineral-based sunscreen is best. If possible avoid sitting in direct sunlight between 10am to 4pm to minimise UV radiation, and apply suncream every two to three hours - more if you are in the water.

Exfoliate

Dead cells sit on the surface of your skin making it look dull, by exfoliating you remove the dead cells, making your skin more radiant and healthier. When possible, choose a gentle natural exfoliator so it is not harsh on your skin. Protect your glossy locks

Hair suffers damage during the summer with the constant heat, sun damage and chlorine. If you’re going away try an anti-chlorine shampoo and conditioner and minimise the use of hairdryers and straighteners. Sleep

MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN It’s tempting to ease up on moisturising in summer as skin doesn’t feel as dry. Good moisturisers work over time to help promote healthy skin. Try one containing aloe vera which keeps skin hydrated, and if you do get sunburnt will soothe the discomfort.

Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress hormones, which may slow down the production of collagen in the skin causing the skin to lose elasticity and look tired and worn. Try and get a good solid seven to eight hours per night to keep your face looking fresh.

FEATURE

Health & Fitness Now that summer is in full swing, with barbeques, cocktails and garden parties it’s easy to forget you exercise regime. However there are simple things you can do to keep healthy throughout the warmer months.

Pack your breakfast and lunch

This is a great habit to get into no matter what time of year. When you don’t do this, it can lead to you eating junk food. Instead take some time to plan out your weekday work meals which will help give your body the right nutrients.

Drink plenty of water

During the hot summer months, heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated. A lack of water is harmful to your body and can also make you crave food. If possible drink eight to nine glasses of water per day, and if you need some flavour add in some low calorie flavouring or even fruit. Workout in the morning

Doing your workouts in summer are tricky, especially as you don’t want to be stuck in the gym on warm evenings. Set your alarm earlier so you can work out before you start your day. This will kickstart your metabolism and get those happy endorphins flowing.

Practice random acts of fitness

Sneak in little bits of exercise with summer-friendly activiti es. For example gardening burns around 128 calories and not only makes you feel great but you’ll have a beautiful garden to show for it. You could also go for a nice walk with the dog, bike around your neighbourhood or even hula-hoop.

TAKE UP YOGA Yoga is great for the summer. It can be done no matter what age and increases your strength, flexibility along with making you happier and more focused. You can do the stretches from the comfort of your own home and spend as little or as long on each exercise as you please. Spas

Summer sun can affect your skin dramatically. The UV rays dry out your skin and exposes fine lines, so going to a spa is the perfect way to re-hydrate your skin. Day or weekend spas have become a popular form of healthy relaxation over the years. They provide stress reduction and relief, help soothe joints and muscles and make you feel better about yourself. There are lots of different treatments available including massages, mud baths and facials. Most spas also have saunas along with fire and ice rooms leaving you refreshed and ready for summer events. Cool down with essential oils

Dabbing a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil on the back of your neck and temples just before your workout provides a cooling effects, and opens up nasal passages so you can breathe a little easier.

Eat more colours

Everything you eat plays an important role in the way your body functions., so try to incorporate more colours in terms of fresh fruit and vegetables into your diet.

ABOVE ALL, BE HAPPY! Enjoy all the beauty summer has to offer and try and keep stress levels at a minimum. Celebrate your healthy habits instead of looking at them as an obligation and always take one day at a time.

A cut above COMING SOON AT ELEMENTS MEDISPA‌ DERMAPLANING. What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a technique where the outer layers of the skin are exfoliated with the use of a blade. It is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and is great for ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). Although merely an old wives tale, many patients are often concerned that any vellus hair will grow back heavier and darker after dermaplaning – this is not the case. As long as the hair is superficial vellus hair it will always grow back at the same rate and texture as before treatment. Who is suitable?

Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except those with acneic skin. If you have deep cystic acne, wait until the outbreaks clear before trying the treatment. 42 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

The treatment is highly effective for those suffering with dry, dehydrated skin. Is it painful?

Dermaplaning is a painless procedure that can be compared to shaving your legs, but in this case the face. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and has no down time. The only side effect will be slight reddening of the skin immediately after treatment. The benefits?

Dermaplaning allows for greater penetration of skincare products and creates a flawless canvas for make-up to glide on smoothly. It can be used alone as a deep exfoliation or in preparation before more invasive treatments such as laser treatments and chemical peels.

Elements MediSpa is launching this exciting new treatment in spring. A skin consultation is always recommended before any procedure. Island of plenty WITH GREAT WEATHER, RESTAURANTS AND GOLF, IS MAJORCA THE IDEAL LONG WEEKEND DESTINATION? JOHN MURPHY REPORTS. f you’re in need of a little tonic after being battered by the winter elements in Britain then you could do worse then take a trip to beautiful Majorca. Only two-and-a-half hours away from Manchester, the largest of the Balearic islands is an ideal long weekend destination. With typical Mediterranean temperatures, ranging from 15-20ºC in the autumn and spring, shorts and t-shirts will keep you under the low-cost airline’s miserly baggage allowances. And there’s plenty to do. The island is famous for its beaches, scenic coastline, Serra de Tramuntana Mountains in the north, classical road cycling terrain and impressive golf courses. No trip to Majorca would be complete without a visit to the historic capital, Palma. Dominating the skyline and overlooking the shimmering Mediterranean harbour is the Gothic cathedral of Santa Maria. A vast and impressive building, inside and out, it is famed

for its altar canopy designed by the modern architect Anton Gaudi. Other notable landmarks include Alumudina, a Moorish-style Arab fortress which was converted to a royal residence and the medieval circular construction, Bellver Castle. Perhaps the most enjoyable element of the city is the long seafront promena0de. Take a stroll, avoiding runners and cyclists, and marvel at the vast cruise liners that battle

for berths and the gleaming multi-millionpound yachts gracing the harbour. Away from the promenade, streets in and around the old town are home to some of the finest bars, bodegas and restaurants in Spain. Open a huge wooden door on a street corner and find yourself in an Aladdin’s cave of a courtyard area with locals highlighted in the shafts of spring sun filtering through the vines and glinting on their glasses of local wine. Catalan influenced food stars in an array of fine restaurants. One of the best views of Palma is from the wonderful terrace at the Castillo Hotel Son Vida, part of The Luxury Collection. vast columns, exquisite antiques and stunning, classical paintings. The air of opulence is maintained with marble and grand wood panelling running throughout the castle, with the latter featuring heavily in the elegant Es Vi bodega bar and restaurant with its huge glass doors opening on to the long terrace which juts out towards the bay. Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas and Prince Rainier of Monaco have sipped their cocktails here while enjoying the same stunning views. The bedrooms are equally grand and spacious with fine furniture and fittings, many with balconies offering views over the golf course which snakes around the hotel and beyond to Palma itself. The hotel is an ideal base from which to

explore Palma and the island but it also offers many facilities itself. As well as a beauty spa, the hotel has four tennis courts and can arrange sailing, riding, water sports, hiking, cycling, and even paragliding and parachuting. One of the most popular activities is golf, with guests being able to play at the adjacent Arabella courses Son Vida, Son Muntaner, Son Quint and Son Quint pitch and putt. Conveniently a shuttle from the hotel will take you at no cost to each course. Son Vida is the oldest course on the island with narrow fairways winding around the estate of mature trees, lakes and shrubs. It’s a tough, tight championship course where accuracy, not length is the requirement. Son Muntaner is more open and accommodating for the average club golfer with wider fairways funnelling into well protected, sometimes elevated greens. The newly sown Bermuda grass has helped with better contacts on many of the holes. Son Quint, opened in 2007, is the youngest course on the island offering wide fairways, straightforward par 4s and stunning views of the Bay of Palma, way below. All three courses are great value for money with green fees ranging from 50-90 euros, with the hotel able to reserve your tee times.

Details: The luxurious Castillo Hotel Son Vida is part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Majorca, which also comprises the Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel and the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca resort. Duncan Poyser George’s Great British Kitchen Duncan has been working at George’s Great British Kitchen for two and a half years and creates British food with a twist. He says: “We’ve found that Britain today is a multi-cultural melting pot of flavours, so we develop across three areas. One – British standards served in George’s unique style; two – British with a difference, where we take great British staples and give a unique twist to the dish; three – we respectfully fuse Great British ingredients with flavours our nation is now equally well-known for, such as Indian or Mediterranean. The business has three menu changes per year, plus weekly specials – all of which need to fit their brand triangle and kitchens before being served in all three of their branches. “We, as a group, supply ourselves with our own fresh batch products nationally, which we make centrally to control quality, consistency and safety.” Unit 8 The Light, The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 8TL Tel: 01332 226640 www.georgesgreatbritishkitchen.co.uk

My favourite dish from the spring menu is corn-fed chicken breast, morel mushroom tortellini, baby spring vegetables and chicken consommé. “There is so much to learn. He makes light, seasonal, health-inspired dishes with flavours from all over the world. He says: “A typical day consists of preparing an energising breakfast, whilst teaching my great team of chefs the Filmore way. I get to try new dishes all the time using really unusual ingredients.” His favourite dish is from their current evening menu – Malay chicken supreme with roasted cumin celeriac and wilted greens. His advice for other aspiring chefs is to, “be prepared to be patient and work long hours.” 71 Station Parade, Harrogate HG1 1ST Tel: 01423 560 988 www.filmoreandunion.com

MEET THE CHEF

Ash Johnson The Cairn Hotel

Murray Wilson Horto Restaurant Murray Wilson has been working at Horto Restaurant at Rudding Park Hotel since May 2016. It is a contemporary fine dining restaurant that serves modern British food. Murray likes to showcase the ingredients in the cooking methods he uses and the presentation. He and his team are currently focussing on opening the new restaurant in the luxury £9.5m Rudding Park Spa, which opens on 2 May. He says: “It’s looking fantastic and we are really excited to start welcoming guests. The best thing about my job is the creative side – devising dishes and developing the Horto team. “A typical day involves a visit to Rudding Park Kitchen Garden, where over 100 different herbs, salads, edible flowers and fruits are grown allowing us to create dishes packed full of flavour using quality heritage varieties that are usually hard to find. The rest of my day is dish development and preparing for service.”

Ash Johnson has been serving up lounge food, afternoon teas, a la carte and carvery dishes in the Windsor Suite at The Cairn Hotel for four years. He has long and busy working days, starting at about 7.30am and sometimes serving as many as 200+ guests. He says: “I like to be creative and strangely like stress and pressure. I’m very hands on when it comes to training the junior chefs too. The meal he enjoys preparing the most is a trio of lamb – lamb shoulder hash, lamb loin, lamb leg croquet, parsnip and veal jus. “Becoming a chef not for the faint hearted. The main thing is to ask if you are not sure. Knowledge is what makes chefs grow so read and read some more, then cook it. Also remember to be a team player and help educate the people below you just like the chefs above you teach you.” Ripon Road, Harrogate, HG12JA Tel: 01423 504005 www.strathmorehotels.com/ Cairn/home Tel: 01423 844822 www.ruddingpark.co.uk

Oliver Stewart Ripley Castle Estate Oliver Stewart is the estate head chef at Ripley Castle. Oliver worked his way up to the head chef position at the Boars Head Hotel on the estate between 2004 and 2010. He then opened a stint of hotels across the country, before coming back in 2013 to oversee all the food on the estate. “At the Castle, we cook for a range of events, weddings, conferences, outdoor events, small private dinners and where most of the menus are bespoke to the customer’s personal requirements. We have also just launched our own range of homemade ice creams. “We use a lot of estate produce from our garden, birds and deer shot on the estate and herbs and plants foraged from the land such as wild garlic. “One of my favourite dishes is an autumn dish of poached wild duck breast, sorrel and confit leg cannelloni, wilted gem lettuce, sautéd chanterelles.” Ripley, Harrogate, HG3 3AY Tel: 01423 770152 www.ripleycastle.co.uk Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 61

EATING OUT

Convivial Convive PHOEBE SEYMOUR ENJOYS THE FLAVOURS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN IN THE RELAXING SURROUNDINGS OF WEETWOOD HALL’S NEW RESTAURANT. ou don’t need to stay over in a hotel to feel the benefits of a short break. Sometimes, just a couple of hours of being wined and dined at a restaurant can do wonders, and that’s exactly what I found at Weetwood Hall’s new restaurant, Convive. Taking inspiration from the Mediterranean, Convive is open for hotel guests during their stay at the four-star hotel, as well as to the general public. With modern light fixtures, brown leather chairs, orange booths and on-trend rose gold detail, it’s a stylish and relaxing setting. And if you really want to feel like you are holidaying in the Mediterranean, there’s even a heated terrace to enjoy. My partner and I chose to sit in one of the booths, as it was comfortable and gave us more privacy. Martin Pickles, former owner of Flying Pizza at Roundhay and head of operations at Convive, came over to our table and gave us a welcome so warm we felt as if we were guests at his home. He started us off with two glasses of Drappier Carte d’Or Brut champagne (half bottle, £30) before handing us over to Paige, our server for the evening.

Y

For starters, my partner and I chose the Ibérico chorizo (£5.50), tomato bread (£3) and Convive’s own patatas bravas (£5.50) to share from the tapas-style smaller plates menu. The chorizo was served in tender slices, braised in a red wine and shallot oil and had a sweet, yet spicy flavour. The patatas bravas was topped with generous dollops of Convive’s tangy tomato and garlic sauces, whilst the tomato bread came as two crunchy slices of warm bread, spread with a fruity tomato reduction and topped with fresh, aromatic basil. For mains, I had the sashimi tuna steak (£22). Served on a bed of buttered spinach, raisins and pine nuts, with a bright yellow blood orange puree, the flavours were magnificent when combined with the juicy slices of tuna. By contrast, my partner had the Pollo del Mediterraneo (£14.95), pan-fried pieces of chicken served on the bone, with a peppery San Marzano sauce, tempura vegetables and thinly sliced potatoes. For dessert, I had the light and creamy tiramisu (£6.50), served in a martini glass and topped with a dusting of coffee powder, while

my partner had the sticky toffee pudding (£6.50) accompanied by a scoop of salted caramel ice cream. When it comes to dining, there’s no greater feeling than never having to lift a finger. And from the moment my partner and I were greeted at the door, to the moment we left, we were truly taken care of. Though I wished we were staying over in the hotel next door, it was lovely to escape to Convive – if only for a couple of hours.
