When commercial assets meet the personal life… TERESA DAVIDSON, FAMILY LAW PARTNER AT IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH, ADVISES ENTREPRENEURS TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE. “

he majority of people don’t really plan well enough for the future,” said Teresa Davidson, Family Law Partner at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth. “We deal with financial situations where people haven’t really thought this will happen to them.” Businesses can be put at risk by far more personal matters, which is why Davidson urges business owners to plan carefully. “Being in a firm like this where we have such a big and wide ranging business team, there is much more of a focus on acting for people with business interests.” “It is best to be involved right at the beginning of the story,” said Davidson, “You have to untangle so much, particularly if a couple are in business together or family assets are involved. For example, an up and coming entrepreneur who is doing really well and the business is flying – they don’t necessarily think that in 15 years’ time they might be sitting down talking about whether their current partner will get a share of the business they have built.” Davidson continued: “As business owners, having to extract that money means implications for the business. How are they going to get it out of the business? Then it’s getting to the bottom of what the business is worth and other things which are massively disruptive.”

T

6 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Davidson notes the high profile divorce of Asos founder Nick Robertson, forcing him to sell 1.3 million shares through a placing with institutional investors last year to fund his £70million divorce settlement. The judge was asked to decide how much Robertson’s ex-wife Janine should receive after they failed to come to an agreement on the division of shares and property owned by the entrepreneur, which took Asos from a £12million company when it floated on AIM in 2001, to a £3billion company today. Stories like that of the former Asos chief executive are the stuff of nightmares for entrepreneurs and successful businesspeople alike, but it is not often that they think about the situation early enough to mitigate it. “This is not going to happen to everyone,” said Davidson, “but on a more moderate level that happens to a lot of people, preparation in any event is therefore key. “We need to discuss how they want to structure the business; when setting up home with someone, having a cohabitation agreement; how to manage finances, to think about having the right shareholder agreements for instance. Much of what we do centres around providing a sense of stability and knowledge for clients going through that situation when the relationship does break down. “In terms of planning, the main thing is

getting people to think about prenuptial agreements. As advisors now we must be talking about at least the option of a prenup to all our clients but especially the entrepreneurial ones. “People were sceptical about them in previous years, that they would even have an effect, but the law has moved on massively in the past five years.” The case of German paper company heiress Katrin Radmacher in 2010 made that clear, after the UK Supreme Court ruled that the Husband should be bound by his prenuptial agreement, giving very strong guidance on how prenups should be viewed. “It gave people reassurance, and meant that we can be a bit more definite that they will benefit from having a prenup in place,” Davidson said. Separation and divorce is going to represent a significant change to you and your family, especially if there is a business involved. Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth offer unrivalled guidance and methods to support you whatever the circumstance, help you plan appropriately and make the right decisions at the right time. All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

Taking it easy LIVINGCARE LAUNCHES ‘SCAN-EASE’ SERVICE TO HELP RELIEVE MRI ANXIETY orkshire’s leading MRI and sports injury imaging provider, LivingCare, has launched a new service to help its patients tackle ‘scanxiety’ and common MRI fears. It follows research conducted by Siemens UK, which found that 42 per cent of people are afraid of MRI scans, with one in seven admitting to cancelling their appointment due to a fear of the scanner; a significant number of people also refuse to be referred for one at all. LivingCare’s new ‘Scan-Ease’ service allows patients to book a visit before their scan to meet the expert team, tour the clinic and familiarise themselves with the scanner and learn more about the process and what to expect. This is proven to reduce or even eliminate fear of the ‘unknown’. The purpose-built, state-of-the-art clinic

Y

features the region’s first private 3T MRI scanner, which offers twice the resolution of older 1.5T scanners, but also has a number of features designed to overcome common complaints, adding to the Scan-Ease service. The scanner is quicker and has 30 per cent more internal space, without losing any imaging quality, which significantly helps patients who find traditional scanners uncomfortable and claustrophobic. Some scans can also be completed without the need for the head to enter the scanner. The scanner at LivingCare also features soft and soothing glow lighting, with patients able to select their own colours, to help create the best mood and environment during their scan. Dr Stephen Feldman, Medical Director at LivingCare, said: “Our team of highlyregarded imaging experts have 50 years’ combined experience and understand that

• Familiarisation visits for all MRI patients • 30 per cent more internal scanner space • Soft glow lighting with customised colours having an MRI scan can be a traumatic experience for many patients. “We hope the new service will help ease worry by offering patients the chance to ‘check it out, before it checks you out’. Adding this level of reassurance and peace of mind means more important scans will be able to go ahead.” Patients no longer need to go to their GP for a referral and can be assessed for a scan by the LivingCare Imaging team, dramatically reducing waiting times and demands on NHS scanners. To book an appointment at LivingCare’s Thorpe Park Clinic, call 0113 397 0981 or visit www.livingcare.co.uk/imaging. A FASCINATING NEW EXHIBITION AT LEEDS INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM CELEBRATES THE STORIES OF WOMEN IN INDUSTRY. ueens of Industry reveals the untold stories of the working class ‘queens’ elected to represent Britain’s greatest industries - railway, cotton, wool and coal. Those elected flew the flag for their industry, county and country in what proved to be a life-changing experience. The first Railway Queens were elected in the mid1920s and the last Coal Queen was crowned in the 1980s. John McGoldrick, the industrial history curator is behind the exhibition. He has a background in social, industrial and transport history, and after working at Lancashire Museums, then the National Railway Museum for seven years, moved to Leeds Industrial Museum. Here’s John talking about his career, what to expect from the exhibition and the inspiration behind it.

Q

the Cotton Queen Quest in order to find a woman who could campaign for the industry. You’ll be able to discover the history behind each of the industries following it from beginning to end, learn how queens were chosen, how they helped develop their industries along with how much being a queen changed the women’s lives. We’re borrowing exhibits from the National Railway and National Coal Museum, items from private individuals along with items from the Leeds Museum Collection such as a weaver’s apron from the 1920s. We’ll also have an interactive section where we are recreating the crowning chair. Visitors will able to be an industry queen of not only

the main four but also a contemporary queen. We are also talking to an engineer based in Leeds, getting her insight into what it’s like working in the field in the 21st century. What was the inspiration behind the exhibition?

The former wool queen - Doreen Kerfoot, came to the museum with some photo albums, stills from the film she starred in, the script and even some fan mail from her time as a queen. Within ten minutes, we had decided it was the next exhibition we wanted to do. What are you most looking forward to?

Making these women famous again. They were a big deal at the time with thousands gathering to see them so it is nice to put them back in the limelight.

Which exhibitions you’ve worked on have stood out to you?

What do you think it will bring to the local community?

I worked on ‘Grin up North’ an exhibition on the history of northern comedy which focused on trying to get underneath the skin of that northern sense of humour and what makes it so peculiar and particular.

It’s a celebration of the industries that were key to the area. It is a way of getting people excited about industrial history that can be something that is difficult for people who aren’t interested in machinery or engineering - it’s a way of saying this subject is for everyone and touched many people’s lives.

Has it always been your career goal to work within museums?

Queens of Industry runs from November 3 to September 2019. For more information visit www.leeds.go.uk/QueensofIndustry

Yes. I wanted something that involved research but also allowed me a certain amount of creativity. In this industry you can devise ideas and see them through to the end - it is quite satisfying. Tell me a bit about what Queens of Industry entails?

The exhibition focuses on four main industries - railways, cotton, coal and wool. They plucked women who worked within the different sectors or held competitions such as Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 25

Grandad was my inspiration NATALIE ANDERSON TELLS HANNAH SANDERS WHY SHE CHOSE A CAREER ON STAGE AND SCREEN. atalie Anderson has been acting professionally since the age of 15, landing her first big role as Francesca in BBC’s The Biz. After attending drama school, she moved on to working on ITV’s The Royal and then for five years took on the role of Alicia on Emmerdale. Natalie has also made numerous theatre performances including Wicked and Romeo and Juliet. She’s recently landed the role as Lauren in Fat Friends the Musical. Fat Friends was originally a TV series written by Kay Mellor running from 2000 to 2005. The musical has been composed by Nick Lloyd Webber and produced by Joshua Andrews and Adam Spiegel productions. Here’s Natalie talking about her most memorable roles, the upcoming production and why the arts are important to younger generations.

N

What was the inspiration behind you pursuing acting as your career?

I had an amazing grandad who used to look after me, and films and the theatre were his passion. His house was filled with old movies and he used to talk to me all the time about the stars, so I grew up being surrounded by the arts. Also after seeing July Garland in the

Wizard of Oz I just thought that looks like an amazing world to be part of. What is one of your most memorable roles?

Alicia in Emmerdale, as because I played her for five years I really got to explore her character. Emmerdale was kind to me and gave me amazing story lines meaning I got uncover all the aspects of her. Close second though would have to be Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, as she was just so different. What was it about Fat Friends that made you want to audition?

Firstly it is set in Leeds - my hometown, and I love the TV series. I also am a big fan of Kay Mellor, and have always wanted to be a part of something she’s written. What are you most looking forward to about the show?

Getting it on its feet and to an audience! I can’t wait, and am excited to see what people’s reactions will be – I hope they love it. What do you think performances like Fat Friends being to the local community?

It’s something that is relatable, something that is not out of reach and appeals to everyone,

which is why it is such a great show for Leeds. Why do you think it is important to encourage younger generations to get involved in the arts?

With the arts you have the freedom to be creative and you can get so much enjoyment out of it. It’s also a really good way for young people to express themselves and build up confidence. It’s important for people to see worldrenowned plays such as Shakespeare’s. Rather than just reading them, the theatre brings the books to life, helping children understand the underlying messages. Finally, if you watch something and feel involved I think it’s more encompassing, helping the audience feel a part of it. Aged 76, Neil Diamond shows no sign of slowing down

A shining Diamond WITH ONE OF THE BEST BACK CATALOGUES IN THE BUSINESS, LEGENDARY SINGER-SONGWRITER NEIL DIAMOND SHOWED NO SIGN OF LOSING HIS LUSTRE.

eil Diamond’s 50th anniversary tour proves that at the age of 76 he shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the legendary American entertainer had a packed first direct arena in raptures. This was a celebration of five decades in the music business and Diamond, a classic showman who has written some of the most memorable hits of the last half century, left 13,000 ecstatic fans yelling for more. It’s certainly a case of “all killer... no filler” when Diamond and his 13-piece band command a stage. With so many hits to his name there was no time for restlessness as each new song brought a familiar favourite. Diamond is still recording new material and even scored a number one album with his

latest selection of songs that reflected a more strippeddown and intimate style. But it was the big, sweeping pop classics that left a lasting impression on the Leeds crowd as the hits that he wrote either for others (Diamond started as a songwriter for hire) or himself proved to have lost none of their appeal. As befits a master showman Diamond has also always had a certain image. Look at his album sleeves from the 1970s for a brief fashion masterclass in how loud and shiny big collared-shirts can be. He had the big hair to match too. Nowadays he cuts a more dignified figure, as befits his status as elder statesman of pop, he acts his age, but there were still glittering rhinestones in his all-black apparel. Most important of all that classic Diamond voice - deep, rich, with a touch of grit but always tuneful -

has lost none of its power to fill an arena. All the hits were present and correct and done full justice by some fantastic backing musicians. I Am, I Said, Forever in Blue Jeans and Red, Red, Wine (no it is not a UB40 original), were just a few of the numbers that many lesser artists would save for the big finish. Diamond has enough in his locker to sing them earlier in the set. There was the odd low-key moment where newer, more autobiographical material was given an airing. He sat down to sing for the only time in the set for Brooklyn Roads, a look back over the years complete with poignant cine film and photos from his childhood. But those quiet moment were ushered into the wings for the big showbiz finish. I’m A Believer brought the crowd to its feet for a no-holds-barred display of mum and dad dancing at its finest, and with an encore of Sweet Caroline and Cracklin’ Rosie, the evening ended on an absolute high. Who knows whether Neil Diamond will have the energy or inclination to undertake another gruelling world tour after this one. If this was the last we saw of him in Leeds, he certainly left on a high.

alletta, an open air museum, the Fortress City, Malta’s capital, and a World Heritage site, is one of those destinations that people think they know so well, even if they have never stepped foot on it. The view from Sliema on the opposite side of the harbour is undoubtedly breath-taking. Named after its founder, Jean Parisot de la Vallette, Grand Master of the Knights of St John, the city was built on the arid rock of the Mount Sceberras peninsula. Starting in 1566 and “built by gentlemen for gentlemen” the city was finished in 15 years. Complete with bastions and forts, the whole city was built by hand and is an amazing example of Baroque architecture. Valletta has welcomed heads of state, royalty, artists and poets and is now the permanent seat of the Maltese Government. Busy by day and yet with an atmosphere of tranquillity and timelessness by night, the city is truly a city of European art. Today it is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world and Malta’s main tourist attraction. Teeming with cafes and wine bars, the majestic

St John’s Co-Cathedral and a treasure trove of priceless paintings, the view of Malta’s Grand Harbour is often described as the most beautiful in the Med. The city plays host to theatre and concerts by leading opera singers. A hive of business activity during the day, the city switches to a slower gear at night, Take a stroll to admire the magic of the fortified capital, with its bastion walls, dense clusters of worn limestone buildings, timber balconies and imposing churches. In fact, the best way to enjoy Valletta is on foot, so you do not miss out any of the narrow streets which house some of the most beautiful works of art, churches and palaces. The city is abundantly rich in heritage with historical buildings around every corner. An array of boutique hotels awaits you to add to the thrill of staying in Valletta. We chose our hotel, The Saint John, nestled in the centre of Valletta, for its proximity to most of the ‘must visit’ sites. Cafes, boutiques and the most amazing restaurants are just a step away, and we were

amazed by the depth of the building which had been recently converted into the most desirable accommodation. The rooms had an industrial feel with attention to detail being obvious. Our room had a huge double window overlooking one of the many roads leading down into the harbour. We were shown into the attached Cheeky Monkey pub for coffees and light bites before our adventure began.

The Saint John, (which opened in August this year) has rooftop views from the terraces of its top-floor suites and beautiful modern contemporary rooms, all fully air-conditioned, with free wi-fi. It has just been rated the best value in Valletta. It is perfectly situated 350 yards away from the National War Museum. A five-minute walk will take you to the St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and a 10-minute walk will take you to the Upper Barrakka Gardens. All the Saint John’s rooms have a flat screen tv, a work desk and coffee machine. Each ensuite room has hairdryer, slippers, robe and toiletries. You can start the day with a continental breakfast, which provides a selection of sweet and savoury products as well as fresh fruit, hot drinks, and fruit juice. Guests can enjoy a beer or cocktail at the hotel’s bar. The Saint John, 176, Merchants Street, Valletta, Malta, VLT 1174 www.thesaintjohnmalta.com Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 33

whilst the Cottage Escapes name is new, they have been involved in the holiday cottage trade for many years, previously developing a range of regional cottage brands – Cumbrian Cottages, Yorkshire Cottages, Northumbrian and Scottish Cottages. The venture originally began in 2007, when the firm purchased a very sad dilapidated terraced house in central Keswick, which they fully refurbished to become Mary’s Cottage, a highly successful five-star property. Since then, they have progressed with a loyal team of skilled tradesmen to source and develop holiday properties in the very best locations in the Lake District and the Yorkshire Moors and coast, bridging the gap between traditional and modern and transforming beautiful period properties to their former glory with the addition of the latest amenities and facilities. Each Cottage Escapes property has undergone extensive development and refurbishment to create bespoke holiday homes with every convenience, and all properties range from a minimum four to five-star gold standard. Fuel, bed linen, towels, unlimited WIFI and unprecedented levels of quality furnishing and fittings are provided and most of the properties accept pets.

DEAR DOCTOR... Mr Gerard Kelly MBChB MD MEd FRCS is a consultant ENT surgeon at Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay and at Leeds NHS Teaching Trust. Question

My four-day-old baby is having problems breastfeeding. He does not seem to be able to latch on properly and often breaks off crying. He also has colic and isn’t gaining much weight. My midwife says he has a “tongue-tie” and suggests he would benefit from having it divided. What does this involve and will it be painful for him? Answer

The Season to Spa Festive Spa Days Starlight Spa Evenings Charcoal and Winter Berry Mud Rasuls

Tongue-tie (or ankyloglossia) is a condition that affects the way the tongue moves in the mouth. For some babies, their frenulum – the cord-like strip of skin joining the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter than usual making it difficult to breastfeed. Tongue-tie affects around 4-11 per cent of newborn babies. It is more common in boys than girls, and sometimes runs in families. Signs of tongue-tie in newborns include gulping, making clicking noises and breaking suction while feeding because they cannot latch on properly, causing distress for both mother and baby. If a baby has a tongue tie but can feed without problems then no treatment is necessary however it sounds like your baby is struggling and may well benefit from a tongue-tie division. In very young babies a tongue-tie division is usually carried out without anaesthetic in an out-patient clinic by a consultant surgeon. It is a relatively painless procedure as there are few nerve endings in the floor of the mouth. The baby is held by a parent or a specialist paediatric nurse. he tongue is lifted by the consultant and the frenulum is cut with sterile scissors. The tissues are then pushed apart to divide them. It takes less than a minute and there is very little blood loss, if any. The benefits of tongue-tie division are usually immediate and the baby can usually breast feed very soon afterwards. Spire Leeds Hospital is the only private hospital in Leeds providing surgical services for babies from weight of 10kg upwards. For more information about tongue-tie division with Mr Kelly, contact the Private Patient Team.

Hidden Harewood THERE’S MORE TO HAREWOOD THAN JUST THE HOUSE... EDDY LASCELLES IS CHAMPIONING LOCAL FOOD AND DRINK – AND EVEN THROWING IN A MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR OR TWO, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. n recent years, the discerning foodie has gone back to basics. The origins of the produce we eat and the way it is grown and reared has become more important than ever, with an increasing number of people in the industry opting for organic, locallygrown, handpicked ingredients. Eddy Lascelles heads the Harewood Food and Drink Project and is flying the flag for provenance and heritage driven produce in the Harrogate, Leeds and York area. Many people will be familiar with stately home Harewood House, filled with its priceless antiques and its 4,000 acres of lush land, including its manicured gardens, but they may be unaware of the treasures growing in its seven-acre walled garden or of the amount of fruit and vegetables that can be foraged on this grand estate. For those who really know their Harewood history, you will be fully aware that the house has been owned by the Lascelles family since 1738. Eddy may have blue blood running through his veins, but he actually grew up in between Bristol and Bath, before spending many years working as a headhunter for a recruitment company in London. Of course, Eddy still visited his grandpa from time to time and all his roaming through the grounds at Harewood certainly made an impression on him. Moving up north to live and work on the estate with his wife, Sophie, was therefore something of an ancestral homecoming.

Pop-up dining events – called Hidden Harewood – are to become a regular fixture

“I started the Harewood Food and Drink Project in November last year,” he explains. “There’s so much going on at Harewood people aren’t aware of so it’s a way of showcasing, promoting and celebrating all that amazing provenance and heritage behind the food and drink we produce. “It’s about the seasonality of food and the great quality, all done in an ethically and environmentally sound way. Food has always been a passion for me, but it’s become a real obsession with the quest to find the best cheese, wine, smoked meats and so on. “When the house was built in the 18th century, it was totally self-sufficient, so there was a kitchen garden constructed to provide the Lord and Ladyship and all the people they were hosting with fruit and vegetables and that’s the heritage that has continued throughout.” The first phase of the project was a collaboration with award-winning Whittaker’s Gin based in Harrogate. This was made of water from the gin company’s own borehole, combined with botanicals from Harewood, including mulberries from a 120-year-old tree Eddy played on as a child and elderberries foraged on the estate. The second phase was to collaborate with a number of local breweries on four seasonal ales; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Eddy worked with an independent microbrewery in Garforth called Quirky Ales for the Spring and Summer ales. Autumn, a golden ale made with hops from the walled garden has just arrived, while

Winter, a plum porter, will be a collaboration with Roosters Brewery in Knaresborough and is due to launch toward the end of November. The next stage of the project is to host regular, pop-up, dining events called Hidden Harewood. The first event took place toward the end of the summer and featured a tour of some of the most hidden hotspots on the estate including private land and buildings, some of which have never been open to the public before. This was followed by a tasting menu designed by Josh Whitehead, sous chef at the Michelin recommended Ox Club. “It’s like a magical mystery tour of the estate,” continues Eddy. “We’re about to announce our next Hidden Harewood in winter and we’re going to be working with Josh again because he’s incredibly talented. “I don’t want to give too much away, but it will be a winter in the woodland do, with seasonal food figuring quite highly on the menu such as game and our beef. We’ve got

some highland cattle here, which are just amazing. “The landscape is beautiful, and whilst people know Harewood for the house, there’s so much more here that is amazing, gorgeous and fascinating, so the pop-ups are about getting people here enjoying the quality of the food and enjoying an immersive dining experience.” Though Eddy is staying tight-lipped about any future phases of the project, one thing’s for sure – he’s only just getting started. “There’s a lot bubbling under the surface. We’re less than a year in and there’s a lot of ideas around how we can develop this further. We’re at the beginning of what’s going to be a long term project here, so keep an eye on what we do next. I think people are going to like it.” We’re sure we will. The next Hidden Harewood event will be taking place on the 7, 8, 9 and 10 December. To find out more about the Harewood Food & Drink Project, visit www.harewoodfoodanddrink.com.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Feeding his passion TOP ITALIAN CHEF ANTONIO STINCHEDDU TELLS PHOEBE SEYMOUR ABOUT HIS DRIVING AMBITION TO SUCCEED.

ntonio Stincheddu is the head chef at Amici, a highly-regarded Italian restaurant on Harrogate Road in Leeds, which has recently celebrated its four year anniversary. Working together with partners Ruggero Donno and Giulio Sava, the team have created a friendly dining environment in which customers can enjoy an exciting menu, an impressive range of wines, compelling performances from the in-house tenor, Giulio himself, and a first-class service. Whilst customers soak up the lively atmosphere, Antonio and his team are always busy in the open kitchen creating authentic Italian dishes with flair and personality, using only the highest quality ingredients imported from Italy. Here, he talks to Northside about his Italian roots, the freedom to create and his ambitions for the future.

A

How did you get to where you are today?

I came to England 14 years ago, after going to catering school in Italy and working for the five-star Delphinia Hotel & Resorts on Costa Smeralda for four years. I found my first job in England as a sous chef in a well-established Italian restaurant in Leeds. With my passion for Italian cuisine, I quickly worked my way up the ranks and became the head chef after eight months. Behind every good chef there is always a great family nucleus that supports the long journey to achieve success. 68 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

What is a typical day at Amici like?

Early mornings start with plenty of morning fuel - an espresso doppio, then I organise the kitchen team and check the quality of all items delivered in the morning. I also research daily what new dishes and techniques have been discovered and developed and could be used for the Amici menu. What do you enjoy most about your job?

The freedom of creating my own dishes and the fact I can source fresh and local ingredients and not to be dictated by a central kitchen like some chains are. What’s new at Amici?

I change the menu seasonally so there are always new dishes that I have created, but having a specials daily menu there is a change every day. So today, you can choose octopus carpaccio and tomorrow you can find sword fish carpaccio or burrata with grilled vegetables. We will also be trying out new ideas, which will be available to view on Facebook, so be sure to follow us to keep in touch!

Creating authentic Italian food: Antonio Stincheddu

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I am a very ambitious chef and at the moment, I am creating new dishes for my new project and sister restaurant, Tinello in Central Square, Leeds. In the next five years, I see myself as the executive chef of this company, looking after six restaurants - if not, more. What advice would you give to other chefs who are just starting out?

Enter this profession for the passion and not for money. As we say in Italy, “Impara l’arte e mettila da parte” - learn the art and lay it aside. Always take advice on board from any professional and don’t be over-ambitious or big-headed when you enter this profession.

To see what Antonio is cooking up at Amici, follow their Facebook page at @amicirestaurants. To find out more visit www.amicirestaurant.co.uk.

EATING OUT

Dakota - definitely deluxe SPECIAL SURROUNDINGS DEMAND SPECIAL FOOD – AND THE RESTAURANT IN THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE LEEDS HOTEL SCENE CERTAINLY DELIVERS, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. ere’s one to ponder: with so much variety when it comes to dining out in Leeds city centre, who would choose to eat in a hotel restaurant? Memories of corporate blandness, from those mass-produced, airbrushed pieces of ‘art’ on the walls to the equally predictable food served in too-brightly-lit dining rooms, may well produce a collective shudder among discerning Northside readers. But every rule has an exception, and the restaurant in Dakota Deluxe, a splendid new hotel in the heart of the city, demands to be judged on its own merits. Dark wood, plush leather, muted browns, golds and greys create an air of instant intimacy from the moment you step into the discreet entrance on Russell Street. In fact, this feels more akin to a rather upmarket private members’ club than a hotel. If you’re not checking in, the restaurant is in the basement and judicious placement of large mirrors, lots of candlelight and a high, industrial-chic ceiling makes it seem spacious and welcoming. There’s a very well-balanced menu too that has a similar welcoming effect. It soon becomes apparent that while the ambience may be plush and upmarket, the menu is designed to suit most wallets and all occasions. The same can be said of the fabulous wine list, with house white or red for £7 a glass and (for those special

H

70 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

occasions) a Connoisseurs’ List that starts at £80 a bottle. It’s worth taking your time over the menu while soaking up the surroundings, and our relaxation was aided by a couple of sparkling aperitifs, a classic Bellini made with fresh peach juice (£8) and a G & T made with Bobby’s Schiedam gin from the Netherlands. After a complimentary taste of warm, fresh-baked bread with a tomato and cheese dipping sauce, we shared two exemplary seafood starters. Steamed East coast mussels in a white wine, garlic and parsley broth (£8.50) were plump, luscious and ultra-fresh while pan-fried scallops, served with parsnip puree, curry oil and golden raisins (£12), were perfectly cooked, with a caramelised top and slightly translucent within. There’s a very fine selection of wines available by the glass and I was particularly taken with the Yealands PGR from New Zealand (£9), a fruity-spicy mix of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer. The same vineyard also served up a superior Sauvignon Blanc (£9) vibrant with gooseberries. For mains I had caught a whiff of seaspray and was rewarded with a stunning plate of lemon sole meuniere (£22), immaculately cooked, with moist flakes of fish falling off the bone. Covered in a zingy mix of brown shrimps, capers and lemon and served with minted ratte potatoes, this was something special.

As was my companion’s Yorkshire Dales lamb rump, thick slices of the tenderest meat served with an aubergine puree and red wine jus £19). We shared a side-order of supercrunchy hand-cut chips (£3.50) For a lovely contrasting dessert, raspberry and white chocolate slice served with a white chocolate macaroon and a refreshingly sharp raspberry sorbet (£8) was a divine combination with a glass of sweet Sauternes (£5) to bring an extra splash of sunshine to the table. We also enjoyed a selection of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire cheeses (£8) served with quince jelly, chutney and crisp breads. It was the perfect end to a perfect evening in a lovely boutique restaurant, which just happens to be attached to a city centre hotel. EATING OUT

Pub perfection PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS THAT THE WILD SWAN IS AMPLE REWARD FOR BRAVING THE ELEMENTS. n winter, I tend to go into hibernation mode. Very few occasions can coax me out of my warm home, so making the trip to brand new pub, The Wild Swan, on a dark and rainy night took all the effort I could muster. However, when my dining companion and I arrived, we were immediately greeted by a warm crackling fire, wooden beamed ceilings and comfy chairs upholstered in light green chequered material to create the perfect country pub atmosphere. With a bar on one side, a restaurant on the other and a dividing wall with the fireplace in the middle, every customer could enjoy the warmth and beauty of the open flames – the only temptation was to stay forever. The proprietor and chef is Karl Mainey, who also runs The Crown Inn at Roecliffe, but the two eateries couldn’t be more different. Whilst The Crown is a traditional restaurant, The Wild Swan aims to be a proper Yorkshire pub. The menu offers a wide range of pub classics, with a few twists here and there. It’s only fitting then, that he felt the need to tweak the name of the pub, which was previously The White Swan. Karl sources local ingredients for his

I

produce wherever possible, but he is also not afraid to develop a menu inspired by international flavours. My companion had the deep fried Yorkshire brie (£6.70) with her warming glass of merlot (medium, £4.50) to start, while I had the piri piri prawns (£6.95) with my refreshing half of Aspall cider (£1.70). My companion’s warm and gooey brie was perfectly matched with an orange and redcurrant sauce, while my zingy prawns came on a crisp bed of Asian salad with a wedge of lemon. Moving onto mains, my companion’s 10oz rib eye steak (£21) was cooked to perfection, as it was well done yet juicy, served in classic style with onion rings, a tomato, mushrooms, fries and homemade peppercorn sauce. Meanwhile, I was tucking into my fresh cod loin (£14.95) from the specials board with a side of seasonal Yorkshire vegetables (£2.25). Beautifully baked, presented on a mound of creamy mash and topped with brown shrimp, this was one of many impressive fish dishes and when the table across from us were served a generous pile of mussels, we couldn’t help but take a glance. For desserts, my companion had the

popular freshly baked figs (£6.50) and it was clear to see why they have been such a success. They were warm and sweet sherryinfused, served with a cool dollop of mascarpone – just the thing after a big meal. And though my slice of Belgian chocolate tart (£6.50) appeared to be a thin slice, the decadent espresso and dark chocolate orange filling soon defeated me – death by chocolate indeed. So the next time you’re tempted to stay home on a cold winter’s eve, don’t. The Wild Swan has all the creature comforts and true Yorkshire charm you could possibly desire in a pub. Entertaining made easy BANISH YOUR DINNER PARTY DEMONS WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS FOR HOSTING THE PERFECT GET-TOGETHER. BY RACHEL MARTIN. ot many of us have the time or, let's face it, the skills to pull off a really flash dinner party...or do we? You'd be surprised, that with a few tricks of the trade, all manner of miracles can be performed. If throwing a dinner party feels hopelessly complicated and stressful, we’ve got some news for you: it’s not. Hosting at home can be simple and fuss-free, especially if you start the planning well in advance and don’t sweat the small stuff. Even if you’re not Martha Stewart, here are some tips to make your next dinner party enjoyable for all - including the host.

N

Pick a good group

Of people, that is. Choose friends who get along well, have similar interests, and have at least some things in common. If you’re looking to spice things up with a wildcard invitee or two, make sure they'll fit in and won't make the rest of your guests uncomfortable. Handwritten mailed invitations are nice (if you’re feeling fancy), but emails or phone calls work fine, too. Ask about allergies ahead of time

It’s never fun to hear about someone’s coeliac disease right as you’re pulling the Beef Wellington from the oven. Most of the time, if a guest has a serious allergy or religious observance, they’ll let you know about it, but it’s always nice to ask anyway. Make sure there’s at least one thing that everyone at the table can enjoy. Choose the right lighting Lighting is key for any good gathering. Florescent, overhead lights can feel a bit cold and uncomfortable, not to mention they’ll highlight any dust or stains you may have missed while cleaning. Any space, no matter the size, looks warm and inviting with twinkling tea candles and some string lights. Be flexible

While a good old-fashioned RSVP is worth its weight in gold, unexpected drop-ins aren’t the end of the world. Make sure your menu won’t fall to pieces if somebody can’t make it or brings an extra friend. The general rule of thumb is to make enough to serve an extra two or three guests. Three spaces for success

It’s a great idea to have three separate zones, each thoughtfully decorated to create the atmosphere you’re after. The first zone is where you serve the welcome cocktails and nibbles - in summer, this may be out on the deck or your impeccably mowed lawn. Once the meal is ready, invite guests to take a seat at your beautifully laid dining table (hint: a gorgeous arrangement of fresh flowers never goes astray. Also, pull out the linen napkins for this one). Finally, create a zone where guests can retreat to cosy couches for a final glass of wine or coffee. A memorable meal

Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Yes, fabulous food will impress your guests, but they’ll be less than impressed if they have to wait until 10:30pm before the first course is served. Choose recipes that allow you to prepare as much as possible in advance, so that you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time socialising. Round out the menu with a show-stopping dessert, and remember, little imperfections in your cooking are nothing to apologise for. Your guests will be grateful for the effort you’ve gone to. 78 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

It’s the small things

A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a twist of black pepper, a sprinkle of salt, a herb garnish or a dollop of natural yogurt can turn a simple dish into something really special. Just have a variety of condiments and dressings on the table for your guests to help themselves. Join the fun

Don't forget, you're part of the party too. Try not to spend all your time in the kitchen, sit down and enjoy the food you've spent so long putting together. Laugh it off

Last but not least, don’t take yourself (or your dinner party) too seriously. Nobody will care if the casserole is ever-so-slightly uneven or the drinks don’t come in mason jars – hey, they’re getting free food, great conversation and tasty drinks. There’s no need to work yourself up over mistakes people probably won’t even notice.

If you’re on a budget Hosting a dinner party can end up costing you a lot of money, especially if you like to impress, but this doesn’t have to be the case if you host your party strategically. Try these tips for throwing dinner parties without blowing your entire budget. Don’t attempt a maiden voyage

It might seem like a good idea to try a new recipe, but there are few things sadder than realizing that the pork was supposed to have rested for four hours - 45 minutes before guests arrive. Whatever you do, don't try making an exquisite dish for the first time on the night you host your party. Ask guests to BYOB

It’s nice to provide guests with beverages for the evening, but decent wine and cocktails can be pricey. Instead, provide your guests with a welcome drink, but ask them to BYOB or bring a bottle of wine to share at dinner. There will be plenty to go around. Skip the fancy wines

With all the cheap and quality wines out there, you don't need to shell out for a fancy bottle. Look for varieties from lesser-known countries, like Turkey or Romania. Add inexpensive ambiance When you look back on the last dinner party you went to, you probably remember the conversations, laughs and the delicious lemon fish – the china plates or rustic centrepiece were probably less of a highlight. Still, dazzling décor can do a lot to create ambiance. You can impress with inexpensive, elegant touches like fresh flowers, candles and mason jars, and get creative with serveware: serve the main course in a casserole dish, cast-iron skillet, or dutch oven, and arrange appetizers on a wooden cutting board. To add to the tranquil atmosphere, set up speakers outside and play soft music. Scour your home

Preparing your table and backyard for your party doesn't require a trip to a boutique. You may be surprised with all the useful goodies you can find around your home. Your indoor furniture can fashion a cheery backyard sitting area, tables can be arranged to serve as separate drink and dessert sections, and martini and shot glasses can serve as classy dessert cups. An eclectic mix of plates can also create a laidback feel, and brown craft paper can give your table a finished look - and simplify post-dinner cleanup. Go easy with the hors d’oeuvres

An overzealous cheese plate means you’ll spend lots of money on something that’s not even dinner and nobody will be hungry for the fabulous meal you made. Limit yourself (and your guests) to one or two options, and don’t keep replenishing Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 79

Is Your Your o Garage Winter W Ready? Like it or loathe it, the winter weather is on its way, and along with the cold temperatures, wind and rain comes the potential for problems through a lack of decent weatherproofing. One area that can easily succumb to the elements is your garage – if the door isn’t fully fit for purpose, your car, possessions and your home are vulnerable to the harsh weather conditions, not to mention intruders. As one of the leading suppliers and installers of garage and entrance doors in Yo orkshir k hi e, the team here at ABi Garage Doors thought we’d offer some advice so you can make sure your garage is ready for winter.

Potential Problems Problems First of all, let’s take a look at some of the potential problems winter conditions s. We et weather and freezing temperatures can create issues can cause for garages. with older garage doors so you can end up either not being able to open or close your door, and possibly have problems with locks and security. For garage doors with poor seals, you’re also letting all that bad weather inside – which can mean damp problems and poor thermal efficiency as the heat will easily escape. This can be a particular problem where you have a functioning room located above the garage. If your garage door isn’t operating properly due to the weather, the security of your car and any tools or belongings you store in your garage are compromised too. Even worse, it allows easy access to your home if your garage is adjoined.

Y o our Essential Winter W Checklist Your Here’s our quick checklist of things to check on your garage door, or if you’re not confident enough to do it yourself, you can call a specialist like ABi to help out: • Look out for rust – especially on steel cables. It doesn’t hurt to coat any cables with some light oil to protect them. • Check seals – is your garage door still watertight and draught-proof? Replace ment and additional floor seals are available for most garage doors and a newinsulated door can make a huge difference to any room attached to your garage. • Lubrication – most modern doors don’t actually need much maintenance but squeaking and grinding is a sign that your door needs some attention. Modern Silicone based lubricants are much better for your door and it is often worth giving tracks and rollers a quick clean. • Paint and treat – exposed metal or timber can suffer over winter so it is worth painting over any exposed metal and treating wooden doors or frames that are showing signs of wear. ABi Garage doors were established in 1989, we specialise in the installation and repair of garage doors, entrance doors and garage door automation technology.

Located just off the A59 behind the Wyvale Garden Centre, the York showroom has ample free parking and more than 150 displays of fires and stoves, with the majority on live display. Chris Davison, owner of Stonehouse says: “We felt there was a gap in the market for a new kind of fireplace showroom where the most desirable fire and fireplace brands are displayed to their best advantage, so that customers can properly visualise what they might look like in their own home. All too often, retailers cram too many products into too little display space and often take little care about their presentation. “We were conscious of this when we
