NS Interiors

Better by design Let BoConcept’s friendly team of experts help you create unique and versatile spaces tailored individually to your lifestyle.

W

hat makes a business stand the test of time? Furniture outlet and interior design company BoConcept has proven that excellent customer service and innovative products can go a long way. BoConcept, located in the Redbrick building, the north’s largest destination for interiors, is proud to be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. The new design catalogue is now in store and BoConcept are running an offer on the new Monaco sofa. When you buy this gorgeous sofa, you get £200-worth of home accessories absolutely free. Even the Redbrick building, where the store is based, is going from strength to strength. The Victorian cotton mill re-opened as a shopping centre 15 years ago and is a great place for the kind of shops you would usually only find in London. As a rare and successful business, BoConcept is in good company. BoConcept started more than 50 years ago in Denmark and has since expanded across Europe and throughout the UK. What makes them different to other furniture manufacturers is their approach to product design. Director of the Redbrick store Julie Kerner said: “BoConcept have their own in-store designers who have worked with us

NS • page 6

for many years. Their main focus is on great design, comfort and the customization of furniture. “For example, you can choose from a range of different arm and leg options on certain sofas, and you can even choose the cushion width. And with a wide selection of fabrics and leathers to cover your sofa, you can create a product that is versatile and unique to you.” The staff at BoConcept create spaces to match your lifestyle, whether you are looking to better utilize the space in your family home, or downsizing. BoConcept has everything you need to design a room from scratch, or to incorporate new pieces to complement the furniture you already have. Their furniture has a contemporary look and a comfortable feel, while their accessories including rugs, vases and lamps, help to complete your room. BoConcept offers a free home design service, measuring and providing inspiration and advice to transform your room. Once the friendly team has shown you what is possible, they will draw up a 3D plan to help you visualise how it may look in your home. Julie and her husband Jamie have been running BoConcept in Redbrick since it opened in 2005. Julie has been in the retail industry all her working life so she knows how important good service is. “Customer service is at the forefront of

everything we do,” said Julie. “Our team is conscious of providing a good shopping experience, combined with a strong knowledge of our products. We listen to what our customers want and go out of our way to make them happy.” BoConcept’s clients enjoy a personal service and, as a result, many have become loyal customers who ask for particular members of staff by name. Even interior designers come to BoConcept on behalf of their clients. BoConcept employ their own delivery team so, as well as a commitment to delivering on time, they also have the understanding and knowledge to help put your furniture together. If you are looking for inspiration for your home this autumn, pick up your copy of the new design catalogue today. Though the seasons change, Julie and her team’s focus remains the same – on their customers. “Our aim is to choose the right products, at the right price for our customers so they are happy with them for years to come.” Whether you are daunted by a big project or want a sofa to match your existing décor, you’ll find a wide selection of products and a dedicated team at BoConcept. NS Cycling

Traffic, what traffic? Ease your commute to work – and get fit at the same time – with a Specialized cycle.

I

n both our work and our home lives we’re now expected to do so much. At home we’re expected to be an administrator, a plumber, a chef who can cook healthy food, but also get enough rest to start the next day. In our workplace we’re expected to respond to countless emails, do our work, turn up at often fruitless meetings and then work overtime to show our bosses that we work hard. This leaves us with less time to worry about fitness and leisure. Commuting by bike can take care of some of these worries. The link between our work life and home life when commuted by bike can be a nice bit of time to ourselves, where we challenge ourselves athletically and gain other benefits too. It saves you money. Sure, shelling out on a new bike and kit can seem expensive, but using less fuel, depreciation and maintenance costs on a car can save you money. Public transport isn’t the cost effective choice of the people it once was either. Reliable, and often quicker journey times. With traffic, journey times can be unreliable, but often the case is that it’s just plain slow in a car through a city or suburban area. With a bike in a built up area it’s often just faster, using bike lanes, bus lanes, cut-throughs designed for bikes, and the fact that you can overtake long lines of people in cars means that you don’t get stuck in traffic like cars do. Even if it’s not that fast, your journey will often take the same amount of time on a bike, compared with having to guess the traffic issues ahead. You’ll get fitter! It’ll happen quicker than you think, but after a few weeks of riding to work, you’ll notice you’ll be quicker and less out of breath. Soon, hills which were once a challenge become easier and you’ll recover quicker at the end of your commute too. You can do your hobby in the time you’d usually be sat in the car, on the bus or train. If you don’t already love cycling, you will after a spell of commuting. You’ll get the bug. Soon you’ll be timing yourself or using Strava to shave seconds off your commuting time, and getting great satisfaction from it. This means that you are killing two birds with one

NS • page 10

stone, by doing something you love whilst others are feeling stressed about standing stationary. You leave when you want to. With commuting by bike there’s no timetable made by someone else, so you leave work when you want, or leave home after breakfast, at a time you want to leave. There’s no running for the 07:57 bus or making that 08:14 train anymore. At the other end, there’s no hanging around at work for the 18:46 back home, you leave when you’ve finished your work. Whatever your commuting questions or needs, head into one of our Specialized Concept Stores. We’re all cyclists and can let you try bikes and clothing out for the perfect fit. Sirrus Sport 2016 Our price: £500

Our favourite commuter bikes There are different types of commuter bikes for different types of commute. Some people like to gently pedal through the city at a bit more than walking pace and not break any kind of sweat. Others like to move as fast as safely possible on carbon-framed race bikes. We’ve got bikes for both, and everything inbetween. Specialized Roubaix. This is a race bike, no doubt about it. It’s used in the tough one-day sprint races by the likes of Mark Cavendish, but it’s got comfort geometry built in.That’s to say that you won’t be hunched over like a pro at the end of a Tour de France stage. It’s also got space for wider, grippier and more comfortable tyres. It’s also got the option of disc brakes, which will stop you more easily in the wet and require less maintenance. It also has tabs for mudguards. The Specialized Diverge is an adventure road bike and has even more room for bigger tyres. The geometry is even more relaxed for comfort and the frame is burlier for more off-road fun. It can carry panniers and mudguards to boot. The Specialized Sirrus comes with disc brakes or rim brakes, in either carbon or aluminium, but always has flat bars for comfort and control. The range extends from £425 up to £1,700, but is perfect for an efficient commute to the office. NS Events

History and heritage are the magic ingredients that can add real appeal to anything from conferences and exhibitions to parties and weddings.

Events with the H-factor Words: Stephanie Burns

Y

orkshire’s rich history attracts millions of visitors from all over the world each year. With everything from ancient battlefields to fascinating ruins, it’s little wonder our fair county is the destination of choice for so many. It’s also hardly surprising that those who live and work in the region take full advantage of this history when planning important events. There’s nothing quite like a sense of heritage to add an extra special touch to an occasion, after all. But for those who would rather not settle for a dusty old castle, why not bring your event to life surrounded by history, all in

a modern waterfront setting? The Royal Armouries Museum and adjacent NEW DOCK Hall – both run by Royal Armouries (International) plc – occupy an enviable spot at Leeds Dock and host more than 500 events each year. Be it a conference for 20 delegates, a wedding for 800 guests, a bar mitzvah, an exhibition with over 180 stands or any other type of event you could dream of, they cater for them all. And not only do you have the opportunity to wow guests with this unique location, but you’ll also continue to impress them once they step inside your chosen venue. NEW DOCK Hall is renowned in the

region for hosting an array of fabulous events. From weddings and parties to conferences and exhibitions, its vast space and magical atmosphere make it one of the most unique venues around. Across the courtyard, the Royal Armouries Museum and its function rooms are full of historical artefacts and armour to pique the interest of your guests. Imagine hosting a pre-event drinks reception in one of the five differently themed galleries, where guests can mingle surrounded by 3,000 years of history. What’s more, the Royal Armouries International team employs an innovative marketing approach to ensure your corporate clients are as excited about the venue as you are well before the day arrives. Tools such as a drone not only show off the beautiful setting but enable you to offer your customers – some of whom may never have ventured ‘up north’ before – a bird’s eye view of where the event will be held in relation to Leeds City Centre. To see the drone in action, check out the blog on www.rai-events.co.uk. So whether you are planning a corporate or a personal event – be it big or small – why not consider Royal Armouries Museum or NEW DOCK Hall? The dedicated events team is ready and waiting to turn your ideas into a truly show-stopping occasion. Contact them on 0113 220 1990 or info@raievents.co.uk to see what they can do for you. Cryotherapyuk has launched in north Leeds Cryotherapy UK brings you the latest technology in the age-old use of ice-cold temperatures. In stimulating the body’s own biological and physiological reactions, you benefit from natural and non-invasive weight loss, inch loss, pain relief and a wide range of healing. Professional athletes and celebrities in the form of a CryoSauna have used Cryotherapy for years, where the whole body is exposed to freezing temperatures. This is a painful and mentally challenging therapy that needs close professional supervision. Cryotherapy UK avoids the full body shock of the sauna by treating isolated body parts that are said to be relaxing, energising and refreshing. We are a dynamic team with over 60 years experience in the health, beauty and fitness industry. Our therapists are highly professional and trained to give you the ultimate experience in cryo procedures.

NS Health

Nicky Snazell brings a new and unique combination of skills and technology to North Yorkshire.

The 4 Keys to Health

N

icky Snazell has an international reputation for treating patients with chronic spinal pain and related problems. Patients from around the world seek her help at her two clinics in Staffordshire where she has treated nearly 10,000 patients. Patients started to call Nicky ‘The Pain Killer’ as she killed their pain, so the name stuck. Nicky recently opened her third clinic in Spa Bottom Farm, Harrogate. Lucille Watts talked to Nicky Snazell, a biologist, physiotherapist and spinal pain specialist, who has gained nearly 30 years of knowledge to help understand the cause of pain and immobility. Nicky you recently published your first book ‘The 4 Keys to Health’, tell me a little about it and what inspired you to write it? I have spent my whole life searching for ways to treat pain, and have travelled the world, meeting and learning from countless specialists and professionals during this quest of mine. I wanted to pour all my knowledge into a book to help people conquer their pain and allow them a long and happy life. The book discusses healing through an understanding of how neuroscience works. I believe that this holds the keys to wellness, mental excellence, physical fitness and keeping out of pain. I like to imagine all of these things as breaking down into four main sections: the four keys of health featuring mindset, nutrition/hydration, fitness and lifestyle. Is it important to keep fit at any age? Very much so as today we are all too sedentary, often sitting in front of a computer by day and a TV at night. This lack of physical activity causes emotional and physiological imbalances. The good news is we can change this by looking at how we exercise and improve fitness. This changes your chemistry,

NS • page 38

acts as a powerful antidepressant and promotes mental clarity. What people don’t realise is that your knees are loaded up with four times your weight so every extra stone (14lbs) is an extra four stone (56lbs) on your knees – that is why knees are so often the first casualty with osteoarthritis. We need to change the way we think about exercise and hopefully the fitness section in the book will go some way to doing that for people. So does this mean exercise can help with keeping bones strong? Bones are modelled throughout their everyday life, as they respond to stresses put on them by everyday activity and every day millions of old bone cells get replaced by new ones. Fibres within the bone matrix act like bridge girders and need weight-bearing exercise to trigger reactions at connecting stress points. This triggers a cascade of biochemical reactions, which in turn, stimulates bone growth. However, everyday activity and exercise is not enough to reverse osteoporotic changes. A study of mature ladies that looked at a year of aerobic exercise resulted in an average of four per cent bone loss. Weight building exercises took two years to reverse the loss. The American College of Sports Medicine and the Osteoporosis Society (to name just two) insist on the prescription of cardio exercise to include weights. So fitness and exercise is vital for healthy ageing? Yes, so get out of that chair! Gone are the days when we are doomed to inactivity and pain in later life. Exercising your bones is much like a medicine – it doesn’t have to taste nice but the outcome is more than worth it. Being disciplined about getting excercise is key to longevity. It sounds fascinating. Do you have any

Spinal pain expert Nicky Snazell

plans to write any more books? Yes, I am currently writing a follow-on trilogy of books on health called The Human Garage. The first book will be on the mind, which will hopefully be published in time for Christmas. You can find out more about Nicky at her website, www.thepainkiller.co.uk. *Nicky’s Book The 4 Keys To Health is available to buy on Amazon £12.99

Magnetic Resonance Treatment (MRT) Nicky’s passion for finding better ways to help people has also led her to seek out new technologies and with the UK now representing less than two per cent of the world’s population, much of that new technology is developed abroad. She is especially proud to be pioneering the innovative German MRT technology in the UK, which to date has treated hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide and is used and trusted by doctors every day. The new MRT machine in Harrogate is only the fourth in the UK. MRT, a development of MRI technology, is unique in the way it treats because it regrows cells in your body. For example, the root cause of osteoarthritis is wear and tear in the joint cartilage. MRT stimulates the growth of new cartilage, thickening the cartiliage layer and closing holes where the wear is significant. If you have severe or chronic spinal pain or osteoarthritis, then call now for help you probably never knew existed. The ‘silent city’ of Mdina, 30 minutes away from the resort, is perfect for a magical stroll and some delightful afternoon refreshments at one of the tearooms located there. For breathtaking natural beauty and tranquillity, a visit to Malta’s sister island, Gozo, will calm even the busiest mind. The island’s dramatic coastlines and cliff-side

ust 40 minutes from central London, the former home of the Earls of Clarendon – a magnificent 18th century house set in 300 acres of Hertfordshire parkland and open countryside – has been transformed into a cosmopolitan country estate. Ever since it opened in August 2003, The Grove, known as London’s Country Estate – (the hotel is inside the M25 and just 18 miles from Piccadilly) – has been in the spotlight. It was named AA Hotel of the Year within 12 months of opening and Sequoia, the to-die-for spa, has been voted Favourite UK Hotel Spa by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller and Best Spa in the World in the 2009 Telegraph Ultratravel Awards, amongst others. The hotel’s interiors won Best New Hotel in the 2004 European Hotel Design Awards and it was the first hotel to be featured on the cover of British House & Garden magazine. The Grove’s guests are welcomed to a unique environment, one that brings together the very best of 21st century living, with all that makes a country estate so beguiling and attractive: the peace of the countryside, a personal welcome, a sense of sanctuary and refuge. But The Grove is also cosmopolitan, because it offers exciting contemporary

design, professional, thoughtful service, magnificent sporting and leisure opportunities – and an atmosphere that is informal, unstuffy and relaxed. Visitors to The Grove sink into gorgeous, “groovy grand” interiors (by Martin Hulbert, Design Director of Fox Linton Associates) stuffed with antique and modern furniture and art, even in its 217 deeply comfortable rooms, with views over the estate. There are three restaurants – the à la carte restaurant, Colette’s, The Glasshouse (fresh food cooked to order) and The Stables, (comfort food) – and three bars; as well as private rooms for parties, meetings and events. Guests can escape into romantic formal gardens by the Chelsea Gold Medallist and judge, Michael Balston; spend time in the original walled garden, with its glamorous open-air pool and urban beach; enjoy a challenging round on the stunning 18-hole championship golf course designed by the highly acclaimed designer Kyle Phillips; sink into Sequoia; not forgetting two large

swimming pools, the croquet lawn and tennis courts. Children have their own bolthole, the OFSTEDinspected kids’ centre, Anouska’s, with its own swimming pool. Teenagers are not forgotten at The Grove – over 16s can use Sequoia Spa and play on the championship golf course, with golf lessons in the summer holidays. There is also tennis, croquet, volleyball, swimming, snooker, table tennis, a giant chessboard and Jenga. All these elements are brought together to create something that has never existed before just 18 miles from Hyde Park Corner – The Grove, London’s country estate. Leeds sk:n clinic In recent years, the pressure on the NHS has meant that procedures such as non-urgent mole excisions and the removal of thread veins, facial skin tags and excess hair are no longer offered to the majority of patients. sk:n, however, has 37 clinics across the country, and more consultant dermatologists, doctors and nurses than any other chain of clinics, as well as the greatest laser expertise in the UK. For that reason, they have become the preferred choice not only among the medical profession when referring on, but also for any client who wishes to be seen immediately. Dr Jaskiran Azad, Frank Browning and Professor Jim McCaul are all based at Leeds sk:n clinic and offer the safest treatments with outstanding results. Laura Jackson and Alice Levine Q&A What’s your best advice for finding the best deals when shopping? Laura: “I am ALL about a deal and that’s why McArthurGlen Outlets are fantastic! You can find brilliant hidden gems at a fraction of the price. When you let me loose in there I end up spending more money as there are so many amazing things.” Alice: “Invest in some staples and supplement them with vintage and charity shop finds. Don't be thrown off course by something eye catching that you'll end up wearing once.”

Which AW style staple stands the test of time for you? Laura: “My navy cashmere jumper collection is getting out of control. I cannot see a good navy jumper and not buy it.” Alice: “I love a trench coat as it can add a 60s/70s tailored feel to any outfit. I like that slightly androgynous Annie Hall look. Plus you can wear something quite plain underneath. A classic camel trench will serve you very well. Wear open and flowing or cinched with the belt.”

NS Travel Words: Chris Wilson

Discover the craic With new regular flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, there’s never been a better time to explore Dublin. Don’t forget to enjoy a Guinness or two...

R

eligion and alcohol, according to the driver giving a drolly humorous if decidedly non-pc commentary on our Dublin sightseeing bus, have always been the downfall of the Irish people. Next stop, he added without a pause, for St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Guinness Storehouse. Dubliners have a way with words, there’s no denying it; this is a city that is proud of its literary tradition. There are statues and museums commemorating the works of James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw and co., and you only have to settle in with a pint and eavesdrop in one of the many fine pubs to realise that a love of language remains in the blood to this day. But that is just one of the many attractions that make Dublin such a popular short break destination. The Irish capital has

NS • page 48

always been just a short hop across the sea and, now there are regular flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, there has never been a better time to explore for yourself. Dublin airport is 12km north of the centre, so it’s only a half-hour journey into the city. Importantly, if you are paying a first visit and don’t want to waste time, it is easy to get your bearings. The city settles snugly into the arc of Dublin Bay and is divided by Stephen’s Green

the River Liffey. The Royal Canal to the north and the Grand Canal to the south roughly contain the city centre. Those hop-on, hop-off tourist charabancs are a pretty good way to get around and they’ll take you to most of the main tourist destinations in the city, but first you need to find good central accommodation and for location and comfort St Stephen’s Green Hotel is hard to beat. This smart, contemporary hotel is in a prime spot, overlooking the nine-acre St Stephen’s Green Park, which is the largest enclosed city square in Europe. It dates back to the 17th century but the layout is pure Victorian with fountains, lawns, mature trees, ducks and a bandstand. The park is ideal for an early morning stroll, just the thing to give you an appetite for the hotel’s splendid full Irish breakfast

which will most definitely set you up for the day. What to do? With so many attractions, it is probably wise to have a few ‘musts’ on your checklist and plan ahead. For those of a partying persuasion (and Dublin is one of the most popular choices for stag and hen dos) this means heading for the cobbled streets of Temple Bar, which are packed with bars and clubs offering refreshments, loud live music and a party atmosphere into the small hours. One sniffy local told me that the closer you get to Temple Bar, the more the price of a pint rises and the chances of hearing a Dublin accent falls. It’s certainly bright and brash but let’s face it, if you are in the city for a big night out, you’ll find what you want here rather than a tour of grand architecture and galleries. If you prefer your night time entertainment with the volume turned down a few notches, the rest of the city is packed with great restaurants and friendly, civilised bars. A couple of great examples are Toners and Donaghey & Nisbett, both on Toner Street, or Peruke and Periwig on Dawson Street. From the pleasant tree-lined squares of Trinity College to the elegant Georgian buildings, there are rewarding views at every turn and one of the best is just a few yards from the hotel. The Little Museum of Dublin is one of the newest, and best, attractions in the city. All the items on display have been donated by Dubliners and to spend an hour in these rooms is a great way to top up your knowledge of Irish history, politics, literature and music. History is everywhere in Dublin, with traces of a tempestuous past all around. For a refresher course in the 1916 uprising and the great famine, a tour of Kilmainham Gaol Museum is warmly recommended. The austere setting may be chillingly familiar; the building’s restoration was funded by renting the venue out as a film set for many famous movies, from The Italian Job to Michael Collins and In The Name of the Father. Another inescapable factor in Dublin’s history is the invention of Guinness, one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is now brewed in 60 countries, and remains

A lively night in Temple Bar

the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland. The Guinness Storehouse is a huge museum over seven floors that attracts tourists in their thousands from dawn to dusk. The story of how the burnt flavour that is derived from roasted unmalted barley was developed is slickly told, with plenty of interactive elements, and it’s worth the visit just for the fabulous 360-degree views of the city from the glass-domed Gravity Bar on the top floor. You might as well have a taste of the dark stuff while you are here; there’s a ‘free’ pint factored into the price of every ticket. For shoppers, Grafton Street is the place for plush independent stores like the very swanky Brown Thomas. Despite recent economic troubles, there still seems to be a fair bit of money sloshing around, and if you are feeling flush this is the upmarket area to exchange your euros for fancy designer brands in fashion, beauty and homewares. Dining out in Dublin can be pretty highend too. Join the smartly dressed set for delicious steak and seafood in Fire, a fine dining restaurant in an historic building right beside the Lord Mayor of Dublin’s residence, or for something a little less dressy but just as tasty, Fallon & Byrne is a brasserie-style restaurant above a food hall and wine shop. So much to do, so little time… I never did get to see Riverdance, which is still packing the tourists in every night two decades on from that Eurovison moment. Perhaps I missed out; I dare say they’ll carry on dancing for another 20 years.

Factbox: Dublin is a great year-round weekend break location and Aer Lingus Regional operates flights between Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Dublin five times weekly, with lead-in fares from £24.99 each way including taxes and charges. For more information on fares and flight times, visit aerlingus.com. Chris Wilson stayed at St Stephen’s Green Hotel, a smart contemporary hotel in a peaceful location, overlooking the nine-acre St Stephens Green Park. My partner and I stayed in the Venetian Cipriani Palace room, an opulent bedroom with black and white Tema & Variazioni wallpaper (a homage to iconic Italian designer Piero Fornasetti), a dramatic dressing table topped with masquerade ball masks and glass perfume bottles and an ensuite bathroom with a free-standing bath and a classicItalian mural. This was not the only room brimming with wonders at this AA five-star and two-rosette hotel. As we descended into the hall, we discovered battered vintage suitcases, deer heads mounted on the walls and silverware perched on an antique chest-of-drawers. They also invite you to search for a hidden beer tap, where you can help yourself to a refreshing pint. It was quirky details like these that made our stay both unique and classy – not an easy balance to strike. As we made our way into the hotel’s Crab & Lobster restaurant, we were greeted by another setting brimming with treasures, NS • page 56

as there was a collection of nautical-themed, vintage accessories in every nook and cranny. The lamp shades and ornaments were askew, giving the impression we were at sea, whilst the candle-lit tables and the sound of Louis Armstrong crooning in the background created a sophisticated atmosphere. I enjoyed chargrilled tiger prawns and king prawns smothered in tandoori sauce with mini naan breads, followed by moreish stone bass with salty and crispy skin on a bed of mushrooms, with chunks of chorizo and potato gnocci in red wine sauce. My partner chose a full-flavoured vegetable soup from the vegetarian menu before tucking into a juicy mediumrare fillet of beef with spinach, portabello mushroom and chips in a rich gravy. This was all accompanied by a bottle of fruity house white wine, Le Bouquet de Georges Duboeuf Blanc. To finish, I had a knickerbocker glory packed with layers of strawberry sponge, meringue, mango, raspberries, vanilla ice cream, and cream. My partner had a Tia Maria crème brûlée filled with a smooth, espresso caramel cream with warm chocolate chip cookies on the side. After a stroll around the hotel gardens with its hedged arches, communal sauna and hot tub, and a look around the plush, traditional drawing room, we returned to our room for a comfortable night’s sleep. In the morning, we made our way to the sun-lit conservatory for toast and croissants, followed by scrambled egg on toast for my

partner and smoked Hodgsons haddock with poached eggs and tomatoes for me. It had been a weird and wonderful experience, and I can’t wait to return to discover even more of the manor’s fabulous quirks.

Grand, luxurious, relaxing – Judges Country House Hotel is guilty as charged, says Chris Wilson.

Marvellous, m’lud!

T

he circuit judges of North Yorkshire who made Kirklevington Hall their unofficial home from home during the 1970s were no fools; this magnificent Victorian country house with splendid views of manicured lawns and sweeping countryside must have been ideal for a spot of dinner and relaxation after a hard day of laying down the law. Now fully restored as a country house hotel, it remains an ideal setting for anyone looking for a luxurious escape from the cares of the world. Situated just a couple of miles from the bustling, prosperous town of Yarm, it’s within easy reach of Harrogate and Leeds – perfect for a night away, whatever the occasion. Judges Hotel (see what they did there?) is plush without being posh, and is run by cheerful folk who seem genuinely delighted that you decided to spend a few hours in their company. Staying over provides the opportunity to savour all the attractions the hotel has to offer, from the sweeping grand staircase to the generously sized bedrooms with comfortable beds, deluxe Egyptian cotton bedding and ultra-modern bathrooms with upmarket toiletries and even a television sunk into the wall above the whirlpool bath. If you fancy a stroll before dinner, the woodland walks and bike trails are well worth investigating, but do be in good time for an aperitif in the lounge, which offers the full Downton effect with gorgeous rugs,

NS • page 58

squishy settees and real fires. We were also offered superior pre-dinner nibbles of squid crisps with mussel aioli, goat’s cheese beignets and rocket and ginger shooters. We dined in the conservatory, and lovely outdoor lighting gave the grounds a magical quality at dusk, enhanced by the sight of bunnies darting in and out of the shadows. For once I was glad not to see rabbit on the menu.

What we ate: Starters Goosenaugh duck, spiced pears, £11.95 Crab, apple, sorrel, £11.95 Mains 28 day dry aged beef fillet, smoked onions, ash, boudin noir, £34.50 Turbot, shellfish ragu, sea vegetables, mustard, £34.50 Desserts Cheese, chutneys, homemade walnut bread, £11.95 Spiced plum, mango, cardamom, lime, £11.95 Drinks Bottle Pino Sangiovese, £25.50 Coffee & petit fours, £5.95 per person Judges Country House Hotel Kirklevington Hall, Kirklevington, Yarm, North Yorkshire, TS15 9LW Tel: 01642 789000 www.judgeshotel.co.uk

A beetroot and goats cheese amuse bouche and seriously good bread rolls served with softened salty butter added to our sense of wellbeing. White table linen and silver service is the order of the day here and the meal that we luxuriated in was fine dining by anyone’s definition, but without a hint of stuffiness. Starters of sparklingly fresh crab with matchsticks of crisp apple and a sorrel salad, and a duck terrine with spiced pears, set the tone beautifully. Our main course dishes of beef fillet and turbot were both precisely cooked. My companion’s request for beef cooked “medium-rare, but more rare than medium” might have been a recipe for confusion, but chef seemed to know what was required – nicely seared on the outside, rare in the middle. The fish was pure white, flaky and very moist, yet another small triumph of perfect timing. After sharing a good cheese selection and a spiced plum pudding we were back in the lounge, under the watchful eye of various bewigged judges staring down from hung portraits, for excellent coffee and petit fours. In such a relaxed setting, a good night’s sleep was assured and a full English breakfast – cooked to order, not left to sweat under a hotplate – was predictably excellent. For a stopover in a hotel that feels like it’s in a parallel universe but is within easy driving distance, Judges Country House Hotel delivers the goods; a favourable verdict is guaranteed.

Fiona Barber discovers a world of flavours on offer at Around the World in 80 Beers.

Global taste sensation

A

nyone in search of ‘beer-topia’ – the mythical state achieved when all of the worlds’s beers have been sampled – could be forgiven for thinking that their prayers have been answered when they walk through the doors of Around The World In 80 Beers. Located in The Bierkeller entertainment complex in Leeds city centre, Around The World sits on the ground floor – under Shooters and above The Bierkeller. And in fact, its name doesn’t do justice because it actually stocks more than 100 different makes of beer. Beer passports are even available for customers to get a stamp once they have ‘visited’ a country. Those who complete the entire journey are entered into a draw for the chance to win a round-the-world trip for two. Variation doesn’t just come in the form of beer though. Around The World’s food menu offers a whole host of dishes. Burgers, pizzas, ribs wings, Caribbean red snapper curry, chilli con carne and Bavarian Bierkeller classics such as curry wurst pizza and pretzels, ensure there is something to suit all tastes. Our Around The World adventure began in Germany and the Czech Republic, with a taste of Erdinger and Kusovice. The cool liquid was the perfect refreshing accompaniment to our starter: ten chicken pieces, which came with a choice of mild, medium, hot or nuclear sauce. While we’re both partial to a chilli kick, we weren’t feeling quite daring enough for

A San Carlo Christmas

Y

ou may be dreaming of that perfect white Christmas, but after tasting our brand new festive menu, it’ll have you rockin’ around the table, having a happy holiday! We’ve been working with our chef consigliere, Aldo Zilli, to put together a flavour-packed Italian menu for December, and think it’s our best yet. Choose from a spread including the brandy infused tagliolini con aragosta (Venetian egg pasta with lobster), chicken breast in a divine stilton cheese sauce, as well as some celebratory champagne sorbet to get you in the spirit.

Or, if it’s turkey that you’re after, we’ve got a delicious Italian version filled with chestnut stuffing. Santa Carlo is definitely coming to town! We’ve also got indulgent delights such as terrina di pollo con porto (quenelles of chicken liver pate with port and cranberry), there’s melt in your mouth pan-fried seabass in white wine with seasonal winter mushrooms, and options like the irresistible vegetarian classic melanzane parmigiana (baked sliced aubergine layered with parmeza cheese and tomato). There’s also traditional British bits like Christmas pudding mixed in too! To finish 2015 in celebratory fashion, join us for a New Year’s special menu and dine on the likes of scaloppini di vitello alla crema (escalope of veal served with white wine, mushrooms and cream sauce) and carre di agnello (rack of lamb in breadcrumbs with fresh parsley, garlic and mixed herbs). There’s coffee and petitfours to complete the feast. No matter what size your party is – family gathering, business meeting or romantic celebratory meal – we’ve got the fantastic Flying Pizza venue in Roundhay, and why not see in 2016 with some prosecco at

our spectacular marble bar in San Carlo in central Leeds. As you can see, we love food and we love a reason to enjoy it, so if you’re looking ahead to a sumptuous Christmas dinner, a special occasion, or ending the year on a high, then we’d love to partner up with you to make it memorable. Join us for our threecourse festive dining experience, our Christmas Day lunch, or New Year’s Eve dining.

NS Meet the Chef

Orhan Girgin of Lavanta Restaurant Lavanta opens this month and it is my first owned restaurant as chef-proprietor, having cooked for many years at an awardwining Mediterranean restaurant. Every day now offers new and exciting challenges in my journey to make Lavanata the best in Yorkshire. Our menu is classic and contemporary Mediterranean and European cuisine with a wide choice of meze platters and grills and new specials every week. My speciality is my mixed grilled fish and shellfish platter. As a chef you must love your craft and have passion in everything you do. 259 Otley Road,West Park, Leeds, LS16 5LN Tel: 0113 2745525 lavantarestaurant.co.uk

Kitchen secrets Some of the region’s top chefs tell Northside what they love about their jobs. Nyk Snook of The Anchor at Whixley The Anchor is well known for its traditional home-cooked English food and roast meats, including our locally sourced, excellent quality beef and pork. Also, firm customer favourites are the Anchor steak and ale pie and our slow-braised lamb shoulder with rosemary and redcurrant. My day usually involves planning and preparing the day’s menu to include seasonal items, checking availability and forecasting the week’s business and meeting and serving our customers. Young chefs should attend catering college to learn the basics of cookery and underpin this with planned experience in a variety of good establishments to gain a full understanding of the catering industry. New Road,Whixley,York,YO26 8AG Tel: 01423 330432 www.anchorinnwhixley.com

Paul Jarvis of Vavasour Restaurant, Hazlewood Castle I have been serving modern-British food at the Vavasour Restaurant for five years. Each day involves prepping sections, helping junior chefs in their day-to-day work, completing kitchen paperwork and orders, and stock control. My signature dish is a baked vanilla cheesecake, lemon curd, macerated blueberries and pistachio meringue. Although my background hasn’t involved much pastry, I’m quite fond of this dish. My advice to aspiring chefs is: read, watch and find out everything you can. And enjoy food – if you don’t you’ll hate the job. Hazlewood Castle, Paradise Lane, Tadcaster LS24 9NJ Tel: 01937 535353 www.hazlewood-castle.co.uk

David Siddall of The Chequers Inn I’ve been at The Chequers Inn for 15 years and I love knowing that at the end of a long day, customers are satisfied and happy. We offer a mix of traditional bar food, as well as classic French cooking with a modern twist. As well as ordering and preparing food each day, cooking starters and mains and ensuring the food is presented well, I also try to motivate the kitchen staff so we always maintain our high standards. Aspiring chefs need dedication, imagination, flair, passion, high standards and a sense of humour. Ledsham, Leeds, LS25 5LP Tel: 01977 683135 www.thechequersinn.com

Paul Marshal of Brasserie 1 at The Craiglands Hotel

Jonathan Elvin of Stockdales of Yorkshire I am food mad and enjoy everything about the food world. I joined in Stockdales in July and, with it being a new place, a typical day is focused around training and organisation. We are a modern British steak restaurant and the menu will centre around prime cuts of aged British beef cooked over coal in our Josper oven. The jewel in our crown is our very own Yorkshire Wagyu beef and we showcase this through various cuts on the Josper as well as a Wagyu beef burger and Wagyu beef cheek dish. My advice to any chef is to work through the ranks, get good foundations and learn your craft well. There are no shortcuts! Stockdales of Yorkshire, 8 South Parade, Leeds, LS1 5QX www.stockdales-restaurant.com

Darren Danby of Fifty50 The thing I love most about being a chef is customer reactions to great, new and simple food. At Fifty50 we serve American-style bistro food with an Italian influence and my favourite dish is my wild mushroom, pea and aged cheddar arancini balls with sunflower and pecorino pasta. It’s important to work hard, listen and observe in this business. Work at the best places you can that match the type and style of food you want to cook. 146 High Street, Boston Spa, LS23 6ER Tel: 01937-841038 www.fifty50bostonspa.co.uk

Jon Wilkinson of Dish Dining Being creative, having no boundaries with food from all walks of life/cultures and seeing guests enjoy our food are the best things about my job. Each day I arrange with suppliers delivery of fresh produce, prepare ingredients from for lunch service and prep for the days to come. We serve modern-British cuisine and my signature dish is roasted venison fillet, with orange-zest scented summer fruits and venison jus. For any aspiring chef, I would say believe in yourself, always think outside the box and do not be scared to experiment, that’s how you learn. 19 Boar Lane, Leeds, LS1 6EA Tel: 0113 318 2274 www.dishdining.co.uk

We serve a variety of dishes, from pub grub like beef and ale pie, fish and chips and burgers in our bar, to fine dining in our restaurant. I wouldn’t say I have a signature dish, as I am always trying to create new dishes or tweak them, but I consider our version of beef wellington to be as good as they come. Being a chef is about watching, reading, absorbing knowledge and creating something new and different. This profession has so many talented chefs, old and young, that even after years in the trade you can still be inspired by them, learn from them and use this to create your own style. The Craiglands Hotel, Cowpasture Road, Ilkley, West Yorkshire, LS29 8RQ Tel: 0194 430001 www.craiglands.co.uk/brasserie-1

Ash Johnson of The Cairn Hotel The best thing about being a chef is the creativity and I love it when the customer sees the final product. I also enjoy the high pressure and stress of the kitchen; it’s a real buzz. My favourite dish is pheasant breast topped with a wild mushroom farce wrapped in puff pastry and served with pickled red cabbage, glazed Chantenay carrots and thyme jus. Being a chef is a very hard job and can be very tedious when first starting. But as long as you put the hours in and grit your teeth, you will make it. NS Education

Every child is valued

Words: Fiona Barber

Westville House School prides itself its exceptional education and on encouraging every pupil to be the best they can be.

S

tarting a new job is a daunting prospect for anyone. And this couldn’t be truer than when the position involves taking leadership of an entire school. But it seems that Ian Shuttleworth, who recently became head teacher of Westville House School, is more than up to the challenge. Ian, who is married with two young children, joined the school having previously been deputy head at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Wakefield. He specialises in teaching sports and mathematics and says he is excited to be involved in such a wonderful family school. “I am proud to be maintaining and building upon the existing achievements Westville and I am a firm believer in valuing every individual child, as each has an important role to play in the life of the school.” Ian is also very keen to embrace an everwidening range of learning experiences and enrichment opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. “To have a school full of happy, enthusiastic and well-motivated children who are confident and genuinely love arriving at school each day is key,” he says. “I firmly believe in encouraging all the

NS • page 68

children to be the best version of themselves.” Many new children have also recently joined Westville House School, to take advantage of the exceptional education on offer. This independent school, which caters for children ages three to 11, was founded in 1960 and is set in a stunning leafy location overlooking the Wharfe Valley in Ilkley. The school’s academic success speaks for itself, with SATS results that were the 35th best in the country, but Westville House offers so much more than scholarly achievement. The curriculum provides a diverse range, with activities such as fencing, canoeing and first aid forming part of the timetable. Each child learns French and a musical instrument from a young age and extra-curricular activities include running, art, football and hockey. The school even boasts a dedicated sports hall, tennis courts and an athletics field, as well as an outdoor classroom in which every subject is taught. The maximum class size of 21 ensures each child gets the attention they need and, as children move up the school. they are presented with more challenges and with more opportunities for school trips and learning outside the classroom environment.

The school also offers advice to parents of older children in all-important decisions about high school, and supports pupils with entrance examination preparation where appropriate. Westville House School has strong links with the community and is sponsoring the Ilkley Literature Festival (2-18 October). The school hosts community days in which pupils from local schools are invited to participate. Last year, Westville House sponsored The Big Sing, which featured choirs from local schools performing a huge concert together. Despite its independent status, Westville House School is very inclusive. There is no entrance exam and the school welcomes interest from everybody – prospective parents who haven’t considered private education may be very pleasantly surprised. An open week for prospective parents begins on Saturday 10 October and continues from Monday 12 to Friday 16 October.Visit the school to see the beautiful setting and outstanding facilities for yourself. Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 90% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 75% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees

The question of reasonable financial provision is raised by Irwin Mitchell’s Paula Myers.

A “A number of cases have increased enormously for spouses, generally women in a second marriage scenario who are left in conflict with adult children from the previous marriage or relationship.” www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Inheritance Act changes

t Irwin Mitchell we have seen a dramatic increase in cases involving claims against estates where we have to ask the Court to re-write a will in order to make sufficient and reasonable financial provision for a client who has not been properly provided for. Sometimes this happens quite unexpectedly. The number of cases has increased enormously for spouses, generally women in a second marriage scenario who are left in conflict with adult children from the previous marriage or relationship. In these circumstances, the children will expect to receive their inheritance or what they believe they are entitled to; the spouse can sometimes be left with a share of the estate which is not sufficient enough for them to live on, or which dramatically impacts their lifestyle. It is often tax efficient to leave a life interest for the spouse so that she has a roof over her head and an income from the estate or trust. This also means that the children would then inherit in a tax efficient way on her death. This does not work so much if there is a relationship where there is an age difference between spouses and where the second wife is similar in age to the children

from marriage number one. However, we often see scenarios like this which may sound perfectly reasonable in practice but only so long as the choice of trustee is correct. Too often, a father will want to please everyone and so will grant his children access to the purse strings by appointing them as trustees. This can leave spouses feeling unnecessarily controlled or restricted and find that their life interest and conditions to remain living in a property are all too onerous without any freedom to live their lives. We have dealt with cases where the trustees have not properly looked after the spouse or they have delayed in making payment in order to make matters difficult. We have also dealt with cases where there has been a close and civil relationship during lifetime but this has changed as soon as money and assets are discussed after death. If you are in this position, we have vast experience of dealing with inheritance act claims and can offer a range of funding options. This option is also available to cohabitees, people maintained by the deceased, adult and minor children. ww.irwinmitchell.com

New restaurant for Leeds city centre

New look for Brasserie Blanc Leeds

Stockdales of Yorkshire is due to open on South Parade in Leeds. In addition to the 100seater restaurant, there will be a sociable bar area, a private dining area seating up to ten guests and a chef’s table. The menu will centre around prime cuts of beef (including Wagyu) that have been aged for 28 days and seared over coal in the Jospur oven, giving the meat a unique flavour. It also includes dishes such as gin-cured salmon, duck egg and truffle soldiers and a chargrilled Caesar salad. Yorkshire born head chef Jonathan Elvin has trained with the likes of Gordon Ramsay at Claridges and Mark Fosh in Palma de Mallorca.

Brasserie Blanc on Sovereign Street, Leeds, has reopened following a major makeover. The new interior gives the brasserie a more relaxed feel and a waterside bar overlooks the river, offering wines by the glass, cocktails and local beers. Other features will include a unique cheese counter where diners can choose from a selection of British and French cheeses, a large kitchen table for a ‘French feast’ with friends and, for the first time, there will be a breakfast menu. General manager Marta Gonzalez said: “After eight successful years in Leeds it’s time for something different. We will have a similar menu but in lovely new surroundings and of course the bar area - something our customers have been asking for.”

How to pick the perfect pumpkin

Go Wild in Harrogate Wild, a new 38-cover restaurant by critically acclaimed chef Jim Key, opens in Harrogate on 8 October and promises a fresh and imaginative approach to getting the best from local, seasonal and foraged ingredients. Jim has worked for some of the finest hospitality brands and highly acclaimed restaurants around the country, including The Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey, where he was first appointed head chef at the tender age of 21. He also finished in the top five of ‘The Great British Dish’ TV series with his pistachio, cherry and goats cheese dessert. Jim said: “My work will challenge the dining norm. The ingredients will be thoughtful, inspiring and most definitely never ever fussy.” 28a Swan Road, Harrogate, HG1 2SE Tel: 01423 525917 www.Wild-Restaurant.co.uk

Farmer Copleys in Pontefract has grown an array of pumpkins in every size, shape, flavour and colour. If you plan to eat your pumpkin, choose a dense-fleshed variety as they are great for roasting and have a small area in the middle with seeds. Crown Prince, Pumpkin Rouge or miniature are good examples. If you’re going to carve your pumpkin, look online for design inspiration and then choose the type that suits. Baby Bears are good for small children, and the popular Racer is easy to carve due to its high water content. The flesh can also be used to make soup or pumpkin pie. Pick your own at the farm on 10 and 11 October and head along to the pumpkin festival days (PYO also available) on 17, 18, 24 and 31 October 10am-4pm.Visit www.farmercopleys.co.uk or search ‘Farmercopleys’ on Facebook for more information.

Revolución de Cuba opens in Leeds The £1.5million Latin American rum bar and club, Revolución de Cuba, opens on Call Lane in Leeds at the end of October on the site previously occupied by Baracoa Luxe Bar. Creating 80 new jobs, the dynamic split-level venue will feature a main showpiece bar, a live music stage, two upstairs bars and a 700-capacity club and function room. Leeds general manager Chris Sleaford said: “The bar is really coming together and will look amazing when finished – think ‘Miami meets Cuba’. We have a fantastic menu with Latin-inspired food and rum-based cocktails, and with live music the atmosphere will be something totally different.”

Sir Gary said: “I was delighted to open Tong Garden Centre and meet the fantastic team of dedicated staff who are working tirelessly to turn it not only into a great place to shop and buy Yorkshire produce but also into a great tourist attraction for the region.” School friends Mark Farnsworth and Tom Megginson, who bought the ailing centre in May, have invested in an extended plant department, the Grasshoppers children’s adventure playground, and a coffee shop and restaurant. There’s much more to a new garage door from ABi Garage Doors than just good looks.

Feel the benefits

U

pgrading your garage door can have significant benefits to the value of your home, its external appearance and even the lifestyle you lead. Whilst often considered a secondary product within your home, the garage door by tradition is usually the single biggest component on the exterior of your property. It provides the secure barrier between internal and external spaces and can significantly alter the opinions of neighbours and friends regarding the appearance of your house. According to many garage door companies, the most common reason why consumers change their garage door is for cosmetic purposes. A new garage door offers increased curb appeal adding value to your house. Choosing a door that compliments other exterior features of your home, such as your front door and windows, can also give the impression of higher class, value and wealth to the passer-by. However, in the past five years, the secondary benefits to adding new garage doors have swayed more homeowners to part with their cash and change their doors more frequently. ABi Garage Doors Director Luke Pierce comments: “Whilst many garage door purchases still focus on appearance, more garage doors are now being picked because of other advantages, such as thermal or sound

insulation and additional security. “The reduction in cost of high quality automatic operation systems has also allowed more consumers to enhance their day to day lives and enjoy the perks a modern door brings.” Such is the rise in demand for these types of doors, companies like Hörmann are offering differing levels of thickness, which determines the level of insulation and thermal value. The inclusion of a brake also increases thermal performance by up to 15 per cent, significantly reducing heat loss from within the coldest part of any home and saving money on heating bills. This is particularly beneficial should your garage be adjoining or underneath a room, with an integral garage a particular preference of modern builders. As a main partner of Hörmann, ABi Garage Doors is able to supply, install and repair the very latest garage door products. We also have a range of front doors so you can have matching front and garage doors. Our showroom in Leeds has a wide range of different designs and styles on show and you can also speak to one of our experienced sales team. riving a 4x4 at frightening 40degree angles, shooting clay pigeons into smithereens and ragging a quad bike through the mud – these are the things thrill-seekers’ dreams are made of. And at Yorkshire Outdoors in Felixkirk, you can live out all these fantasies for real. Now, I’m far from an adrenaline junkie, but when managing director Richard Fawcett offered me and my partner Josh the Triple Package; 4x4 off-road driving experiences, clay pigeon shooting and quad biking, I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway. Josh, on the other hand, needed no persuading. As well as these three major activities, Yorkshire Outdoors also offers segways, kids quads and team building events, which can include specially designed activities, archery and all of the above. With beautiful views of the Yorkshire countryside and so many activities to pack

into one day, it’s definitely worth making a weekend of it. One option is to stay at The Carpenter Arms – an award-winning village inn only a five-minute walk away. With a cosy pub and restaurant and contemporary bedrooms that look out onto manicured gardens and rolling hills, it’s the perfect place to relax after an adventurous day. Josh and I were fortunate enough to sample some lunch (a gourmet burger for him and a vegetable risotto for me) to fuel our action-packed day.

There are many other companies in the UK that do adventure days like these and they don’t come cheap, but with Yorkshire Outdoors, their thorough one-on-one sessions make them brilliant value for money. “It does cost a little more,” said Richard. “But, unlike some adventure days, where you have to share your session with a group of strangers, you get a good-quality, personal experience taught by professionals.” Gordon Wilkinson is one of their fullyqualified 4x4 off-road instructors. He was originally a customer some 16 years ago, but enjoyed driving so much and advanced so quickly, that Yorkshire Outdoors welcomed him as a permanent member of staff. With Gordon by my side and Josh in the back, we started with the 4x4 off-road driving. Unfortunately (or fortunately – depending whether you like a challenge), it had been raining heavily all morning and the dirt track was full of slippery puddles and deep muddy furrows.

After Gordon drove us around the track and gave us some advice such as “don’t tuck your thumbs around the wheel” and “don’t use any of your pedals going down hill”, I was ready (or as ready as I was going to be), to drive the huge Defender myself. At first, I was flustered when the wheel spun through my hands and a sharp incline came into sight, but thanks to Gordon’s patience and words of encouragement, I was soon enjoying the rollercoaster-like highs and lows. An hour-long introductory session was more than enough to tire me out, so I handed over my last 20 minutes to Josh. He doesn’t drive, but he too picked it up quickly. Even kids are allowed to drive these beasts so the Off-Road Experience is a great option for all the family. Next, Gordon dropped us off at the shooting range. There to meet us was John Shipley. As a life-long enthusiast who started shooting at the age of seven, became the North of England Junior Skeet Champion at ten and started teaching by 18, we were in safe hands. Like Gordon, John was calm and patient. “It’s all about hand-eye coordination,” he insisted after I’d missed four in a row. He swiftly switched my shotgun for a semiautomatic with bigger cartridges, which meant I was more likely to hit the discs which rose and fell. Sure enough, I started to feel the satisfaction that comes with hitting targets and watching the shards fly apart. While I gave my arms a rest, Josh moved onto the second round where the discs flew away from him. This was a lot more challenging for the both of us and we hit one or two each. Finally, John launched both clay pigeon discs one after another and, though I got better at hitting the ones that rose and fell, I didn’t quite get the hang of the ones that flew away from me.

Not as easy at it looks... Phoebe masters the art of 4x4 driving with a little help from instructor Gordon Wilkinson

The best advice I got from John was not to think about the gun, but to take my time and focus on the clays – I certainly hit more when I did this. We had three rounds of shooting each, which felt like plenty, and the session was a great introduction to the sport. John was also our quad bike instructor so, after a quick break and a cup of tea, we each got kitted out with wellies, gloves and helmets and drove out single file. We drove through three different terrains; the first was a small but very bumpy dirt track, the second was a flat field where we were able to go much faster, and the third was the 4x4 dirt track which had more challenging dips and bends. The dirt tracks took a lot of concentration so I was happiest whizzing around the flat track. John pulled over and checked on us every now and then and, after about 45 minutes, he could tell my concentration was waning (I started getting

stuck in some tight corners). So sufficiently tired and covered in mud, we returned to the site. I’m not a massive thrill-seeker, but I thoroughly enjoyed all the activities at Yorkshire Outdoors. If you are a beginner, don’t worry. All the staff are so accommodating and friendly, you’ll be immediately put at ease. If you are a more advanced shooter or driver, the staff will be happy to give you a more challenging experience. With three tricky tracks to master, quality one-on-one teaching, and plenty more activities besides,Yorkshire Outdoors manage to make you feel both exhilarated and in control. One thing’s for sure, we had a fun, action-packed day we will never forget. To book your own outdoor adventure, call 01845 537766, free phone 0800 298 6488 or visit www.yorkshire-outdoors.co.uk.

oin ALNO Kitchens at the World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Saturday 26th September, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. “We are very proud to be taking part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for the second year in a row, raising money for an incredibly worthy cause. What better way is there to enjoy a freshly brewed coffee and delicious cakes?” says Jon Smith, ALNO Showroom Manager. Coffee is such a mainstay of our social and working lives – never before have people been so particular about what coffee they make, drink and enjoy. To reflect the demand for ‘proper coffee’ in the home and to demonstrate the theatre a coffee machine can add to the home,

the team at ALNO would like to invite you to experience its fantastic Miele coffee machines. There will be lots to enjoy, including delicious bakes, fresh coffee (and tea!) as well as lots of fun activities and games – all to raise money for a great charity. Did you know? Every day in the Leeds area alone, 29 people find out that they suffer from cancer. By 2030, there will be 129,200 or more people living with cancer in West Yorkshire, which is enough to fill Leeds United’s Elland Road Stadium three times over. Please help ALNO to support Macmillan by dropping into the kitchen showroom, purchasing some delicious cakes and joining in on the numerous activities during the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. All proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.
