A business is nothing without its clients, and at Kreativ Kitchens, they put quality, design and customer service at the heart of everything they do. As such, the family-run business has supplied a range of stunning kitchens to many satisfied customers. Based in Leeds, they recently helped a local couple create their dream kitchen. The clients were looking for a modern, minimalistic look with clean lines, that didn’t take away from the traditional structure of their 18th century barn conversion. The Kreativ Kitchens team dealt with all aspects from the design to the completion of the project.

As the client wanted minimal items on show, the team created a bank of larders, which incorporated a pocket door system (breakfast cupboard) so the clients could easily hide their coffee machine, boxes and jars after using them in a morning. The island in the middle of the kitchen mirrors the bank of larders’ look, keeping the clean lines and utilising a downdraft extractor fan so as to not block the eye line whilst cooking and entertaining. The black oak units for the larders tie in nicely with the black beams, as does the black matt lacquer for the island. These fittings all incorporate Kreativ Kitchens’ x-line handleless system. Even the tap is dipped in a matt black finish to tie in with the units and the 12mm Silestone iconic white quartz worktops to create the statement piece of the room.

When it came to appliances, only modern and high end brands would do. The clients therefore opted for Neff appliances, a Quooker boiling water tap and Pronorm kitchen furniture.

Kreativ Kitchens know how important design is, and guide all their clients through the whole process. Only by getting to know their clients and their families, can they bring their designs to life.

The clients provided their own sofa, dining table, oak flooring and hanging lights, but the Kreativ Kitchens team were happy to consider these features when creating the overall vision of the design.

To find out more about their free design and consultation service, call 01132 692784 or visit www.kreativkitchens.co.uk

Their clients couldn’t be happier with this modern kitchen, which empathises with the original features of the building.

Let there be light TRANSFORM YOUR HOME WITH THE HELP OF KINGFISHER WINDOWS. he recent change in the law means that more building work and property changes can be undertaken without the need to apply for planning permission. Thanks to permitted development, we’ve seen a greater amount of extensions and refurbishments in homes across Leeds. One of the most popular home improvements making the most of permitted developments is the glazed kitchen extension. Transforming the kitchen into a living space that wouldn’t look out of place in a show home has been on the top of the list for many homeowners. Along with a refresh of what’s in the kitchen itself, we’ve seen that many homeowners are looking for a way to flood their kitchen with natural light along with adding heaps of space. This is achieved through an extension, and quite often a glazed extension. Research has shown that it’s cheaper to extend than it is to move to a bigger property, to attain the extra light and space so many homeowners are after. You can achieve this with the clever use of widespan aluminium doors from Kingfisher Windows. They’re the perfect choice to offer walls of glass that open up the kitchen to the outdoors and allow the natural light to shine through in impressive style. We offer aluminium bi-fold and lift & slide doors which are the perfect choices for this. Both can be used in the largest exterior wall the kitchen has to offer, with bi-fold doors folding away to reveal completely open spaces, and lift & slide doors leaving clear walls of glass even when closed.

T

Top tip:Widespan doors transform homes into a lighter place all year round and can help you appreciate your beautiful surroundings. When extending part of the home, you want to make sure that you’re not blocking off light elsewhere in the property. We’ve seen the use of bi-fold doors internally that seamlessly connect the extension to the rest

14 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

of the home, which work beautifully when combined with lift & slide doors on external walls. To complete the sleek, spacious and sunlit look that widespan aluminium doors bring, aluminium windows offer the perfect partner. We’ve seen lots of homeowners choose matching aluminium windows from Kingfisher Windows’ modern aluminium range to mirror the beautiful style of their kitchen extension throughout the whole house. Top tip: Add a coloured frame such as grey or black outside for modern style, with white inside to always look great whatever your décor.

Make an entrance

Whether it’s a luxuriously modern, or elegantly traditional door you’re after, the design, colour, glass and handles you choose can create a completely unique feature. Composite doors are the most popular door choice for homeowners who are refurbishing, as they add the beauty of a real wood door, with authentic wood grain. The latest trend is ‘aluminium-look’ composite doors. Our composite door range hits the mark with the collection of smooth contemporary doors, which look stunning when finished with dazzling glass. You can also choose from the classic, cottage & farmhouse, stable, contemporary and deep woodgrain ranges as well as the Yorkshire Collection from Kingfisher Windows, with a massive 65 styles available. Top tip: Add an individual stamp to your entrance with your choice of glass and handles.

Anthracite Grey has been the reigning ‘colour of the year’ for glazing in extensions in 2018, a trend we predict will prevail for years to come. The gorgeous shade has been the colour of choice for most widespan doors we’ve seen, much loved for the sleek and modern tone they help to bring properties. The beauty of aluminium widespan glazed doors, however, is that they offer a world of colour choices. You can choose your frames in any colour to best complement or contrast against your property and décor. One of the benefits of extending your home is that it upgrades the whole property in stunning style. Adding extra style with a new front door is a way to ensure that the entrance to the house sets the tone for the rest of your home.

If you want to put your individual stamp on your home, it’s really important to add the finishing touches through the glass and door furniture. Kingfisher Windows are one of the only suppliers of the Sweet Range of curved door handles, knockers, numerals, and letterplates, which are the very latest in door furniture design innovation. While door hardware needs to offer unique style, security is also paramount. When spending money on extending your home, don’t skimp on the security. Choose the Lock Lock handle and 3-star Ultion Lock as they both work to keep entrance doors secure, and homes safe and sound. Whether you’re looking to create a grand entrance or add more space, Kingfisher Windows have been transforming homes across Leeds for nearly 30 years, from our Drighlington HQ, and we’re happy to help. the largest island in the Dodecanese, should be on the list of places to visit too! And if you are struggling to decide then perhaps a twin centre holiday would a good idea. It’s so easy to combine two or more islands or regions of Greece for you to enjoy during your holiday. Athens the capital of Greece is a great place to start, home to over 4 million people… bursting with historical and cultural buildings. Most attractions are sited within the city centre, there’s a good train and tram network, with many pedestrianised roads around the major archaeological sites. Most visitors to Athens will wish to visit the

Acropolis, home to one of the world’s most famous buildings, the Parthenon. Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands and is widely regarded as a country within a country, not least by the Cretans who are welcoming and hospitable, and fiercely proud of their history, golden sandy beaches, azure Aegean waters and the fact that they enjoy the longest summer in Europe. If it’s a great beach you are looking for, then no beach in Crete is as visually stunning and unique as Balos Lagoon. CLOCKWISE FROM MAIN PICTURE: Beautiful views in Crete; Relax with a cocktail in one of the many beachfront locations; The beaches of Halkidiki; The Venetian-style fortress in Corfu Town

wow friends on social media. Corfu is often the best known island in Greece and the second largest Ionian island. It has a fascinating history, fantastic beaches, and a Venetian style capital – Corfu Town, one of the loveliest towns in Greece, which has fashionable shopping in the new part of town and cosmopolitan restaurants, bars and a vibrant nightlife around the port area. The old town boasts elegant mansions and palaces, Byzantine churches, well-preserved Venetian castles and magnificent flower-filled Frenchstyle town squares. Well worth a visit. Halkidiki is a fabulous destination for sun, sea and historical sites. Located in the north, it consists of three peninsulas jutting out into the beautiful Aegean Sea. There is a variety of scenery with hills and pine forests, stunning Blue Flag beaches and the spectacular Mount Athos – a great attraction. The Sporades, or ‘scattered’ islands number 24 in total, of which only a handful are permanently inhabited; Skiathos, with its international airport and abundance of sandy

beaches, is the most popular whilst Skopelos – of ‘Mamma Mia’ fame – is somewhat less developed, arguably more beautiful and definitely more rugged, and scenic and green islands of Alonissos, the least developed of them all. Surrounded by dazzling Aegean waters, Santorini is stunning and spectacular with small, picturesque villages of white sugar cube houses clinging to the island’s volcanic cliffs. Arched roofs, blue domed churches and magnificent sunsets dominate the skyline whilst black volcanic beaches and crystal clear waters typify the coast. Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan islands of the Cyclades and famed for its picturesque windmills, traditional whitewashed sugar cube houses, beautiful coastline, excellent sandy beaches, first class hotels and great nightlife. It’s one of the most visited of the Greek islands. Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese and maintains a reputation as one of the sunniest destinations in Greece, with delightful

bays, flowers and forests, handsome towns and ancient sites. Rhodes Town is a fascinating combination of ancient and modern. Lindos is a beautiful town set high on a promontory overlooking the sea and the stunning Temple of Lindian Athena can be reached by foot or donkey via narrow, cobbled alleyways framed with glorious bougainvillea. Kefalonia is the largest and most mountainous of the Seven Ionian Islands. Made famous as the settling for the film Captain Correlli’s Mandolin, if you want to track down the rich and famous, a favourite haunt is the island’s most glamourous town – Fiskardo! Another great choice, would be the island of Kos, close to the Turkish coast. It has traditional villages, ancient sites and excellent beaches. One the of island’s best beaches is Lambi Beach, just a 30-minute stroll from Kos town centre with a glorious 1km long sand and shingle beach. Boat trips to neighbouring islands of Pserimos, Nisyros and Kalymnos are also available from here. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 21

PRAIA DEL REY

Glittering golf on the Silver Coast PORTUGAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVOURITE DESTINATION FOR GOLFERS … BUT THERE’S STILL LOTS OF GREAT COURSES TO DISCOVER. ortugal continues to attract UK golfers in their droves particularly to the Algarve, yet a relatively new course on the block has revitalised interest in the Silver Coast, situated about one hour’s drive North of Lisbon. Made popular for golfers 20 years ago when the Praia D’El Rey course and its upscale properties opened to wide acclaim, the area’s appeal received a major shot in the arm 12 months ago with the launch of the resort’s new course, West Cliffs Golf Links. The first Portuguese venture by US designer Cynthia Dye has rapidly cemented its place among Portugal’s finest, indeed it is tipped to become known as one of the best in the whole of the continental Europe. It was named ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2017 World Golf Awards. Word is getting around, and figures reveal that the Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf and Beach

P

Resort as it is known, is Portugal’s most popular golf destination outside of the Algarve. Business is booming with more than 33,000 rounds of golf played in the first five months this year on the two courses. Praia D’El Rey has seen a 2018 increase of more than seven per cent on green fees booked on the corresponding period last year – with bookings up by nearly 20 per cent in May alone. And the numbers are just as impressive at West Cliffs, with more than 14,000 rounds having been played this year. Its addition makes the Silver Coast an appealing location for golfers who like to play a few different tracks on their week away – just round the corner within easy reach are Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort and Bom Sucesso Golf. There are several ways to combine golf and accommodation and there are good deals to be had.

WEST CLIFFS Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf and Beach Resort www.praia-del-rey.com Cabell Robinson’s exceptional late-1990s layout at Praia D’El Rey has attracted visiting golfers since its inception and is famed for its challenge and variety. It opens in parkland style, but soon some great holes hugging the wild Atlantic coastline among sweeping sand dunes take you into links-style territory. It returns to a more heathland appearance, winding its way back to the clubhouse. It is no push over and indeed can be tough to play when the breeze blows off the beach. Better players will love it; the greens are true and it is an enjoyable test. It is ranked 48th in the new top 100 Continental Europe list by influential course ranking website www.top100courses.com 22 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

West Cliffs Golf Links www.praia-del-rey.com West Cliffs has been created over 200 hectares of natural landscape and rolling sand dunes. Already been tipped to become the number one golf course in Portugal surpassing the Algarve’s Monte Rei. Being relatively new, it currently looks a little scruffy in parts, particularly over the first three holes, but as it matures and blends into its wild landscape it will become a masterpiece. Despite its youthful appearance, the fairways and greens are already in top shape, and the natural vegetation making up the rough is a pleasure on the eye, although a poor shot wide of the fairway will often lead to a lost ball. The stretch from holes four to eight is particularly appealing, though fairly difficult. Variety is evident throughout the course, including on the huge rolling greens that present a number of challenges. One word of warning. Whatever your standard, play off the forward tees or West Cliffs will destroy you.

TRAVEL

FACTFILE: ROYAL OBIDOS Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort www.royalobidos.com Opened in 2012 it was the last course designed by Seve Ballesteros, and what a tribute to the great man it really is. It is described as a parkland/heathland hybrid which makes a nice contrast to the links-like courses of Praia de Rey and West Cliffs. It differs from those in offering water hazards all over but its similarities include perfect maintenance and slick, large and undulating greens. It features some great driving holes, notably the downhill par 5 2nd, and the well- placed water hazards will amuse – particularly the surrounding the island green on the par three 3rd, the extremely difficult 11th, and not least the spectacular finale on the 18th. It plays pretty long, so be warned, and it’s fairly hilly with leg-sapping distances from green to tee, so a buggy is advisable.

The Silver Coast This is largely an unspoiled part of Portugal’s fabulous Atlantic coastline with big beaches and crashing waves that make it a favourite of the surfing set who converge on the fishing port of Peniche, just 30 minutes drive from the Praia D’El Rey resort. Nearby is the old walled town of Obidos, unfortunately overrun by modern day tourism, but still worth a visit during a day off the course. Winemaking in the area is top notch and wines are inexpensive even in the wide range of restaurants that show traditional Portuguese cuisine at its best.

Getting there. Lisbon is well served by local airports and carriers include the Portuguese national airline TAP. Manchester Airport services, including parking and hotels, and be found at www.holidayextras.com The Silver Coast is easily reached by hire car from Lisbon airport via motorway. Stay. Plenty of on-course options and great value playand-stay packages at the Marriott at Praia D’El Rey, the Evolutee Hotel at Royal Obidos, or the Bom Sucesso apartments. Silver Coast. Information on tips on this fascinating region is well covered by Julie Dawn Fox, the excellent award winning English blogger based in Portugal. See www.juliedawnfox.com

Harrogate hideaways ARTISTS’ COTTAGES MAKE THE PERFECT RETREAT FOR HOLIDAYS, WEEKENDS OR BUSINESS TRIPS. usband-and-wife team MarieTherese and George Hardy struck gold when they found five charming cottages up for sale within minutes of each other in the perfect Harrogate location. Having originally set out to find a large property to turn into flats, when they stumbled upon these five buildings, each with their own unique character and style, they couldn’t help but fall in love. The Hardys had already refurbished two homes from the ground up before they began work on the Artists’ Cottages, so knew exactly the challenge they’d be taking on. While a big change from Marie-Therese’s previous career as a barrister, she’s no stranger to architecture, having learned a great deal during her time living with architects in Paris. Marie-Therese has always had a passion and skill for the creative, forever designing and making things from scratch, and her own personal touch can be seen across the cottages. Each cottage has been individually designed, with bespoke soft furnishings and even original glasswork turning the cottages into works of art in their own right. On top of this, each cottage is home to the work of talented local artists, and everything is for sale. So if you find yourself falling in love with what’s on the walls, you can take a little bit of Harrogate home with you. Often voted one of the UK’s happiest places to live, Harrogate is a beautiful spa

H

town full of stunning architecture, open spaces and greenery (and of course, it’s the home of Yorkshire Tea). All of the Artists’ Cottages are within walking distance of Harrogate’s historic centre. So whether you’re visiting for a girls’ weekend or a family week away, you’ll find plenty to do right on your doorstep. This doesn’t mean that the Artists’ Cottages are only fit for holidaymakers though. The Artists’ Cottages are also within close proximity to the town’s conference centre, and who says you need to rest your head in a run of the mill 4x4 room while you’re away for business? If you’re constantly on the move for work, why not treat yourself for a change and make one of the Artists’ Cottages your home away from home? The Hardys are all about making your stay as comfortable as possible, and they’ve a long list of complimentary optional extras for you to take advantage of during your break. Whether you need some extra chairs for a dinner party, or whether you want to sit back and relax by the fire with a good book, a cup of tea and some classic vinyl before a great night’s sleep in their comfortable beds, they’ve thought of it all and are happy to do what they can for their guests.

Gary Lightbody and Snow Patrol

WORDS: Hannah Sanders

OUT OF THE DARKNESS SNOW PATROL’S GARY LIGHTBODY ON BEATING DEPRESSION AND WRITER’S BLOCK.

THE DIARY

t’s taken seven hard years to make, but Snow Patrol’s new album Wildness that combines honesty with forgiveness and self-discovery, creating an overall sound that the band hopes will become a beacon of hope. When the band released their first album: Songs for Polarbears, they hadn’t settled on a definitive sound, and it wasn’t until Final Straw featured much-loved classics like Run, that the Belfast five found the voice we know and love today. Frontman Gary Lightbody talks about the new album, overcoming his depression and the upcoming tour.

I

What’s the inspiration behind Wildness?

I’m not shy about the fact that some of the songs stem from a dark time in my life. I like that they’ve ended up sounding quite positive, though it doesn’t feel like its drenched in the depression or loneliness I was in. I will always remember Wildness as the album that shaped and changed me immeasurably. It’s the record that started me on the second course of my life. I’ve done so many things since I stopped drinking at 40, including changing my diet, exercising and meditating, which have helped me find peace and joy.

I think I’ve opened up a place in myself that even if I wanted to, I don’t think I will be able to close again. This is a window into my deepest places that I have developed a friendship with.

Did you find writing Wildness helped you overcome some demons?

Yes and no. It hindered me for a while because I had some severe writer’s block - although I wouldn’t call it that. I struggled to find a subject to write about, which is why the first three years working on the album went nowhere. It was only when I became sober that I started to have clarity. I learnt that it was those experiences that I had to write about. I never intended it to be an album focusing on those topics it just gravitated that way. What did you take away from writing with artists including Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran?

I learnt something from every session working with Taylor, Ed and other artists. Taylor and Ed are very similar forces as they both know what they want, are inspired, quick writers and have a lot of ideas. I’m not sure that it helped me because the instinctive writing they have isn’t something you learn you just have it, and I used to especially when it came to songs like Chasing Cars and Run. Over time, perhaps the brain slows down but things change and you write differently. Now I rely half on inspiration and half on graft - it’s taught me more having to work for it rather than it just pouring out of me. Why did you kick off the album with Life on Earth?

For me, that song is the gem of the record and I don’t think I could have written a

better song which is why I borrowed U2’s idea of “putting your best track first”. What song are you most proud of?

I don’t want to harp on about Life on Earth’ but it took five years to write. Getting it finished, recorded and playing it live for the first time was such a spiritual moment. I’ll never forget it. Also What If This Is All The Love You Ever Get because of its sparseness. It was brave of us to have nothing but vocals and piano, and we really could have thrown the kitchen sink at it, but it portrays such a beautiful message as is. How did you feel when the album was finished?

I thought I was going to be relieved, or joyful, but I was heartbroken. It was such a long period of time, and I didn’t know how to celebrate. It wasn’t until week after that the positive feeling came. It was so strange that my initial reaction was one of heartbreak, it was almost like my head wanted it to end but my heart didn’t. What have you learnt from the album?

Everything and more. I’ve learnt patience, determination on a scale that I can’t comprehend What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming tour?

Getting back out into arenas and putting on a great show for our fans! We want everyone who comes to our gigs to have a fantastic time - somewhere they don’t need to think and can just enjoy the music - and a concert that will leave them full of joy. We’ve never played at the First Direct Arena before, but we have heard so many great things about the venue so it’s going to be great fun. Have you found it easier to write again, now Wildness is finished?

Yes and no. I think I’ve opened up a place in myself that even if I wanted to, I don’t think I will be able to close again. This is a window into my deepest places that I have developed a friendship with. I will never have a shortage of things to write about no but I don’t want every album to be a confession. I don’t know what the next album will be, and I’m glad about that. I want to surprise myself because if I can do that, I can surprise anybody. What’s next on the cards for Snow Patrol?

Next year will be our 25th year together as a band, so we will be doing some things to celebrate this milestone. Making another album is on the cards too. I’m already writing again and we’ll record those when we have some time - we are never going to wait seven years between albums again. The much-awaited tour will be coming to Leeds First Direct Arena for the first time on 29 January 2019. To book tickets visit www.firstdirectarena.com.

CHOCOLATE WORKS CARE VILLAGE CELEBRATES IN STYLE.

Awards galore! ork’s most prestigious care home has been inspected by CQC and rated “good” across all areas, a welcome good news story for care in York and the surrounding area particularly given recent local care home closures. With five areas covering safety, care, responsiveness, effectiveness and leadership The Chocolate Works Care Village passed the inspection with flying colours. Graeme Lee, Group CEO of operator Springfield Healthcare, said: “Congratulations to General Manager Sarah Paskett and the teams who have all worked together to achieve an overall “good” rating at The Chocolate Works Care Village on their first inspection by CQC. We are so proud of you all, your hard work and dedication has been rewarded and we have been recognised for the exceptional care that we provide for our residents.” Within the CQC report, one Chocolate Works staff member commented: “I love working here. In other places I have worked, families take people out, but here families come and enjoy the facilities with their relatives” To honour recent achievements the home hosted a community celebration by holding a summer fete on its front lawn. Featuring a barbeque, ice cream van, stalls, bouncy castle and more it’s set to become an annual event for residents, staff and local families! It’s a little over year since the care home opened its doors to residents with care needs ranging from a little extra support to nursing and dementia care and in that time it has picked up a host of prizes. The summer fete was a way of thanking all of those who have supported the care village. In June The Chocolate Works Care Village picked up York Design Awards ‘People’s Choice’ award as sponsored by The Press, closely followed by winning two categories at

The Chocolate Works fended off competition from 27 other York-based design projects, which included impressive competition from around the city to be crowned winner. When business gets personal – succession planning for owners MANY BUSINESS OWNERS FIND THE WHOLE QUESTION OF SUCCESSION PLANNING TOO DAUNTING TO CONTEMPLATE. BUT THE DEATH OF A BUSINESS OWNER WILL INVARIABLY GIVE RISE TO SOME TOUGH CHALLENGES FOR THE BUSINESS. any business owners find the whole question of succession planning too daunting to contemplate. The process can be difficult, particularly where someone isn’t ready to retire. But the death of a business owner will invariably give rise to some tough challenges for the business, so it is important to make appropriate plans for the inevitable. The ‘head in the sand’ approach, and the potential dangers of inadequate planning and advice, could lead to family fallout further down the line. In a worst case scenario, it could place the entire future of the business in serious jeopardy and lead to protracted litigation.

M

Succession Strategies

If you are a business owner, whether a sole trader, partner, or shareholder in a private company, the first priority is having a Will that implements a suitable succession plan. This is vital to protect both your business and your family. Carefully drafted Will structures, often involving trusts, can help to secure valuable Inheritance Tax (IHT) reliefs and avoid a large tax bill. Early planning is essential to ensure that the business is not too heavily weighted towards investment, so that investment and trading activities are separated with the risk of losing IHT relief. Trusts are often used to make provision for more vulnerable younger family members, where it may be more appropriate for them to receive their inheritance and/or assume control of the business at a later time. Trusts can also ensure that a fair balance is struck between those family members who are involved in the business and those who are not. Expert advice can bring structure to family 46 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

conversations and ensure a smooth business transition. Aside from IHT, there will be other tax considerations. Although Capital Gains Tax (CGT) does not apply on death, it is likely to arise on a lifetime transfer of business assets where, for example, an owner opts for a sale or a phased retirement to reduce ownership over a period of time. Where applicable, entrepreneur’s relief can reduce the effective rate of CGT to 10% on any gain crystallised on the gifting or sale of an interest in a business. However, advice and planning are crucial to ensure that lifetime transfers are arranged tax efficiently. Income Tax also comes into play. The rules on taxation of share dividends have changed in recent years and the well-advised owner will want his company profits to be extracted as efficiently as possible. A retirement plan might involve transferring part of the business into a trust that, with careful structuring, will enable the trustees to distribute funds in a way that enables beneficiaries to use their personal dividend allowance (currently £2,000) most effectively. Where there are existing business partners, it is particularly important to have an agreement setting out how they can acquire a deceased owner’s interest. A cross option agreement will do two things: allow partners to acquire the interest (a call option) for an agreed sum, and give beneficiaries the right to require the partners to buy out the interest (a put option). The agreement will invariably be supported by life assurance which ensures that when either option is exercised, enough funds are available. This gives peace of mind to surviving owners

who wish to ensure the continued viability of the business and avoid having family members disrupt the business activites. But it also reassures loved ones that they can receive their inheritance in cash, rather become embroiled in a business they may not understand with partners unable to buy them out. The Price of Procrastination

Many owners put off these crucial discussions because they fear family fallout. But failure to review existing arrangements, and to make plans for the future, is truly a dangerous business. The aspirations of the younger generations may change over time; where initially there may be no obvious successor to the business within the family, over time children and grandchildren may become more involved. Consideration should also be given to how to incentivise other key employees, and how to circumvent potential conflicts of interests between them and future owners of the business. Appropriate planning provides much needed peace of mind for all concerned, and ensures that a business is fit for its next chapter. We can support you, your family and business with important decisions to ensure that your future plans are realised and brought to life. Exploring your options can go a long way and allow you to have clarity, peace of mind, and focus on the important things in life Contact James on DDI: 0113 3946809 or Phone: 0370 1500 100 Extension: 6809 james.laycock@irwinmitchell.com @WillDisputes_IM www.irwinmitchellprivatewealth.com

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS?

MAVEER SINGH-PANGU HAS HIS FINGER ON THE PULSE.

Quintessentially British... Arnold’s

f you’re something of a social butterfly on the Leeds scene, then there’s a good chance we’ve already crossed paths (and trust me, once met, never forgotten!). But, for those of you I haven’t yet had the chance to meet, I’m Maveer, your new monthly lifestyle columnist. I work closely with my best friends, Jordan Odu and Deborah De Vittoris, at Pink Gorilla and Hairy Lemon, who are one of Leeds’ most prolific PR, marketing and event agencies. The work we do is varied, but a lot of our time is spent launching and promoting some of the hottest bar, restaurant and fashion brands in Leeds and beyond. It’s a dream job for me, because if there’s three things I excel at in life, it’s eating good food, drinking the best cocktails and rocking a mighty fine OTT outfit (Jordan and Debs may beg to differ on that last point, but what do those two know about fashion darling?!). Of course, there’s a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes too, but those that love their job are few and far between, so I count my blessings every day. August and September have been crazy busy for us and seen us launch some fantastic venues across Leeds.

Arc Inspirations are really smashing it right now and have enjoyed huge success launching Manahatta in Headingley. If you’ve not been, then you must go. The old Arc venue has gone from old and shabby to fresh and fabulous, and they do the best bar comfort food for miles. The Box Leeds City made its debut in stunning style just the other week, with the launch party attracting an eye-watering 400-plus guests, who enjoyed a cool live band, shuffleboard and cocktails aplenty. Whilst I really didn’t want to drop the C-bomb in my first ever column, I simply can’t talk to you without mentioning Christmas. Pink Gorilla hosted the Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor showcase event last week, where my fave store shared some fine food and cocktails, as well as their brand-new Christmas hampers, which are to die for. this, I’ve been a very good boy this year, so don’t let me down! You’ve also not had brunch until you’ve had a Harvey Nichols brunch! What’s not to love about a sumptuous threecourse meal and free-flowing Prosecco? For all you foodies you must try Arnold’s who have just opened in the Arena Quarter. The classic yet modern décor is stunning and is run by the celebrated Ridealgh family, who were behind the legendary Brasserie 44. The menu is locally sourced, quintessentially British and the homemade desserts are simply to die for! While we’re on the subject of fancy restaurants, I had a brilliant time sipping Champagne at The Ivy launch party (until 6.30am the next morning when my alarm went off!) and can’t wait to return to dine. All this eating and drinking is no good for my waistline. Thank goodness we are working on the launch of the new gym Fitness Space; they programme your training around a DNA test and I cannot wait to get on a ‘Hot Bike’. In October (where has 2018 gone?), Blackhouse celebrate their tenth birthday, and I can’t wait to join them for some top-drawer steak and a drink or four. Moving away from Leeds, we’re just in the process of organising an exciting event at Revolucion de Cuba in Harrogate… I love a Mojito!! That’s it for now, thanks for reading and I look forward to joining you again next month but in the meantime follow me on social media on Instagram @maveer123 @pg_hl

THERE’S AN ALPINE ADVENTURE IN STORE THIS CHRISTMAS AS THE POPULAR APRÈS SKI EXPERIENCE RETURNS.

Alexander’s goes Off Piste hristmas seems to get earlier each year, yet with only a limited number of evenings and weekends available throughout the festive season, it can be easy to underestimate the speed favourite restaurants and bars book up. With that in mind, Alexander’s in Skipton has announced that its exclusive pop-up Après Ski dining experience is back by popular demand. Renowned for its plush palm court inspired interiors and lush Mediterranean-style heated sun terraces, Alexander’s is once again all set to transport you to its magical Alpine hideaway this winter. From November 19, its chic Secret Garden will be transformed into Off Piste, a truly enchanting Alpine retreat. The bespoke hideaway ski chalet nestled next to the town’s Leeds Liverpool canal, will be decked out with Scandinavian interiors and lighting – the epitome of cosy hygge charm. Catherine White, general manager of Alexander’s said, “Off Piste was a tremendous success last year, attracting everyone from families to festive parties, who all fell in love with its stunning aesthetic and alternative winter menu. The pop-up chalet feels decadently relaxing with its faux fur throws and ambient twinkling lighting. People just loved its absolute uniqueness and the private exclusivity of it all.”

C

To tie in with the Alpine theme, executive head chef, Struan Macintyre, former head chef of Harrogate’s Hotel du Vin, has crafted ‘Blue Run’ and the ultimate ‘Black Run’ Après Ski sharing menus, which include cheese fondue, beer-cooked frankfurter sausages and a cured fish smorgasbord, plus winter warmers like roast chestnuts and winter soup and pulled pork with flat breads, apple sauce and crackling. There will also be toasty warm festive cocktails, hot winter

toddies, luxury hot chocolates and for true off-piste dare-devils, shot paddles! Struan said, “Off Piste incorporates a range of menus from a children’s Little Reindeer Menu for just £10pp, to the exclusive Black Run menu, a full festive feast comprising the best artisan charcuterie, homemade pickles and locally sourced fish, meats and cheeses. Like all Alexander’s dishes, this menu brings together quality ingredients with authentic seasoning and flavours in an exceptional way.” Available from November 19 to January, there are just a few short weeks to enjoy this outstanding sensory and culinary experience. Off Piste is suitable for tables of two to larger groups of 30, with the opportunity to make new friends in a social dining environment, or book the pop-up restaurant exclusively. There will also be Sunday appearances from Santa throughout December. Alexander’s Kitchen also offers a more traditional festive dining experience with a selection of seasonal sharing boards, such as butter and sage roasted breast of turkey and 14-hour braised ox cheek. EATING OUT

GO WEST… CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS LUXURIOUS DINING AT HARROGATE’S WEST PARK HOTEL. estaurants in hotels suffer from a bad reputation - and more often than not it is easy to see why. The menus are bland and unimaginative, the atmosphere is sterile, the lights are too bright, service is apathetic at best... the whole operation seems to be geared towards residents who arrive in an unfamiliar town and are too tired or can’t be bothered to find the nearest decent restaurant. It was with all these prejudices at the forefront of my mind that I ventured into The West Park, a hotel overlooking Harrogate Stray. I could certainly understand why anyone would want to stay here. The location, facing 200 acres of parkland in the centre of this historic spa town, could not be better. And at first glance it is clear that this former Victorian coach house had been transformed with lots of love and painstaking attention to detail into a contemporary boutique hotel with 25 spacious and luxurious bedrooms and suites. As for the bar and restaurant, both were alive with the hum of quiet chat, impressive for what we had anticipated might be a rather quiet early midweek dinner. Clearly, for residents and non-residents alike, this is a venue with a life of its own. With warm and enthusiastic service to make us feel right at home, we eased into dinner with a fabulously opulent shared seafood

platter (£24.95). On the menu it’s described as a shared starter for two or a main course for one. Whether you are sharing or going it alone, make sure you bring a king-sized appetite to tackle this gorgeous fresh feast of garlic and king prawns, haddock goujons, mini prawn cocktail, smoked salmon and brown bread and butter. Main courses continued the high standards. My trio of pork (£17.95) with perfectly tender fillet, deeply flavoursome belly and a densely satisfying black pudding bon bon, was accompanied by caramelised apple, cumin carrots, champ mash and a lovely red wine jus. Across the table a duo of Dales lamb (£21.95) received an equally enthusiastic review. The rump was just pink and tasty, the braised shoulder was falling off the fork. Accompaniments of Boulangere potato, plumb puree, courgette ribbons and rosemary jus resulted in a perfectly balanced plate. From an excellent, reasonably-priced wine list we enjoyed large glasses of Sauvignon Blanc (£9.25) and Pinot Grigio (£8.25) with our starters and Chamuyo Malbec (£9.25) with the main course. Standards remained sky high as we rounded off a memorable evening by sharing a gorgeously indulgent homemade sticky toffee pudding (£4.95), swimming in a wonderful toffee sauce with black treacle ice cream.

Finally from the cheese board (£8.95) a trio of cheeses including the excellent Harrogate blue, served with fruit cake, biscuits, grapes, celery and chutney, rounded off a memorable dinner for two in lovely surroundings. For larger parties and celebrations there’s an exclusive room that works equally well for business meetings and private dining. And if you are making a night of it, or you have friends and relatives looking to stop over in Harrogate for a few days, it’s not just the location that makes West Park the perfect place to check in. If you’re really pushing the boat out there are two rather spectacular suites. Alternatively, make sure you book as far in advance as possible and specify a room overlooking The Stray. There can be few nicer views to wake up to. 19 West Park Harrogate, HG1 1BJ www.thewestparkhotel.com Tel: 01423 524 471

Great British food, by George! FOR A FESTIVE SEASON WITH A DIFFERENCE, YOU NEED A RESTAURANT THAT’S A LITTLE OUT OF THE ORDINARY. ith the festive season fast approaching, George’s Great British Kitchen is preparing for their second Christmas in the city. Their Christmas menu offers something a little out of the ordinary, such as Festive Fish and Chips or a ‘Not So Traditional Christmas Pie’. The delectable dishes were inspired by one man, George, who loved classic British dishes with a twist! So, who exactly IS George you might be wondering? The story of George’s Great British Kitchen all began with a humble fish and chip shop, opened by George Constantinou in 1967. However it is his son, Andrew, who has created the restaurant as we know it today. By joining forces with his childhood friend, Nick Hogan, the duo set out to turn George’s love of proper British food and superior service into something new. “We always dreamt of creating a place where people could simply have fun” said Andrew “Somewhere people could meet with their friends and family and have a great time together, enjoying delicious food, quirky cocktails and great music.” George’s Great British Kitchen celebrates all that is ‘great’ about Britain – its heritage, food and culture – in addition to a menu full of freshly prepared dishes, there is a commitment to the restaurant looking the

part and ensuring a fun and vibrant atmosphere in every way - cue beach huts, selfie sticks and top notch service. George’s Great British Kitchen has an extensive fish section, with 100% sustainable wild ocean cod, alongside Scottish salmon and langoustine scampi. Although you’ll find plenty of classics, it’s not all traditional British grub. A love for travel and new flavours has helped to create some unique dishes, such as cod in either smoked paprika batter or onion bhaji batter. “It goes without saying that only the best ingredients will make it into our kitchen. We cook all our food using carefully sourced ingredients with no additives – it’s simple, honest good food with a unique twist.” When it comes to drinks, cocktails are the order of the day. Made with premium gin and vodka, as well as their own homemade sugar syrups and garnished with fresh fruit, they’re something special. Their sweet shop-inspired cocktails will take you back to your childhood with boozy renditions of Parma Violets and Cherry Drops (two for £8 every day from 2pm to 8pm) and nostalgic candy floss features across their drinks and desserts menus too. Never one to conform, George’s refuse to limit their offering and the Christmas season is no different with ‘Festive Specials’ available rather than a formal set menu. With no need to pre-order these seasonal dishes, with trademark twists, are available from 27th November and are the perfect stress-free Christmas treat.

FOOD & DRINK

A ginspiration to all EDDY LASCELLE’S WORK WITH THE HAREWOOD FOOD & DRINK PROJECT HAS PRODUCED AN INSPIRING NEW GIN. WE SENT PHOEBE SEYMOUR TO FIND OUT MORE. nce referred to as Mother’s Ruin and considered a poor man’s drink, gin hasn’t had the best of reputations since the 18th century. But having had a massive makeover over the past few years, gin has been rebooted as a high-end spirit for the discerning and affluent hipster. The recent resurgence of gin-drinking in the UK has been huge, thanks to changes in legislation, making it easier for smaller scale distilleries to produce their own batches. Of course, juniper berries are the main ingredient, but now these smaller distilleries have set a trend for a wide range of exciting flavours featuring almost every botanical ingredient under the sun. Yorkshire is home to some of the best distilleries in the UK. One such small scale gin brand heading the craze is Whittaker’s Gin based in Harrogate. Eddy Lascelles heads the Harewood Food and Drink Project and has collaborated with the distillery to create a truly local gin. Many people will be familiar with stately home Harewood House, filled with its priceless antiques and its 4,000 acres of lush land, including its manicured gardens, but they may be unaware of the treasures growing in its seven-acre walled garden or of the amount of fruit and vegetables that can be foraged on this grand estate. Harewood House has been owned by the Lascelles family since 1738. Eddy may have blue blood running through his veins, but he actually grew up in a town between Bristol and Bath, before spending many years working as a head-hunter for a recruitment company in London. Eddy still visited his grandpa from time to time growing up, and all his roaming through the grounds at Harewood certainly made an impression on him. Moving up north to live and work on the estate with his wife, Sophie, was therefore something of an ancestral homecoming. Fully aware of the wealth of ingredients available on his doorstep, Eddy went about using them to fly the flag for provenance and heritage driven produce in the Harrogate, Leeds and York area. Over the past few years, the Harewood Food & Drink Project has hosted unique dining experiences on its

O

64 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

grounds and worked with a local brewery to create their own ales, but the very first phase of the project was their gin collaboration with Whittaker’s. The Harewood Food & Drink Project Greystone Small Batch London Dry Gin, is made with botanicals from Harewood, including mulberries from a 120-year-old tree Eddy played on as a child, before being created at Whittaker’s distillery. First launched in December 2016, it wasn’t long before the gin was making a name for itself at local festivals, independent retailers and beyond. This year, the gin won a silver award in the London Dry Gin category in the highly prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). “It’s quite a big deal!” admits Eddy. “There were about 800 entrants who applied and it’s a widely recognised award so it’s nice to get that acknowledgement. We’ve created a great team and collaborated with fantastic local professionals. We’ve had some great feedback from consumers already, and this award was the icing on the cake.” Eddy has developed a strong knowledge of the botanicals at Harewood and works closely with the garden team to develop the ingredients. Combined with the expertise of Whittaker’s Gin, the result is a beverage that is distinctly different. Greystone Small Batch London Dry Gin contains seven botanicals – including the

traditional juniper, of course – using the traditional distillation process. “We provide the botanicals and Whittaker’s produce the gin,” explains Eddy. “The idea is that we have a story unique to us. The estate’s head gardener knows everything about the history and produce at Harewood, and talking to Toby Whittaker really inspired me to go ahead with the project. “Juniper is what makes gin gin, but after that you can add anything for flavouring. There’s endless variety and scope. We decided to use mulberry because it’s an ingredient unique to Harewood. Actually, my grandfather used to drink mulberry vodka.” The quality of the water used in the distillery process is just as important and this gin uses pure, Yorkshire water, up at the distillery nestled in the north of Harrogate. While gin is the star of the show, the spirit would be nothing without its supporting acts – tonic, plenty of ice and serving of garnish. “I usually go for a light tonic, but I’d encourage people to drink it neat,” advises Eddy. “You want all those individual flavours to come through. Our gin is best garnished with juniper berries, orange peel and seasonal herbs to further enhance those flavours.” There are plenty of other projects in the pipeline for The Harewood Food and Drink Project, with a collaboration with Northern Monk brewery on the horizon, but in the meantime, gin is the tipple of the times. The Harewood Food & Drink Project Greystone Small Batch London Dry Gin can be found in a number of bars and restaurants across Leeds, Harrogate and York, and is the house gin at Box Tree in Ilkley, the Ox Club and The Domino Club in Leeds. But wherever drinker’s get there fix, there is a wealth of ginspiration to be found. “It’s a good time to be a gin drinker,” concludes Eddy. “There’s so much choice out there and whether you go for ours or someone else’s gin, it’s an exciting time for gin drinkers. We’ve found that people like the story and providence behind our gin, as well as the taste itself.” To find out more about the Harewood Food and Drink Project, visit www.harewoodfoodanddrink.com

NIGEL EATON, HEAD OF HARLOW CARR PLANT CENTRE AND SHOP, SAYS NOW’S THE TIME TO PLAN AHEAD AND ENSURE YOU GET SOME EARLY SPRING COLOUR INTO YOUR GARDEN NEXT YEAR. utumn arrives in our gardening season and your thoughts have to turn to spring! Planning now for next year is vital now with the arrival of hundreds of jewel like spring bulbs into the Plant Centres at Harlow Carr. These need to be planted now whilst the soil is still warm to receive them to get them established for a late winter and spring full of glorious colour. In mid-February crocus, winter aconites, and snowdrops flower first, followed by dwarf narcissus and single early tulips and then in March and April the main event are daffodils followed in April and May by tall tulips and alliums. The long borders in May are a stunning site with all the alliums flowering for over six weeks. But my favourite early flowering bulbs are the dwarf irises, which look so delicate but are tough as old boots and flower in late February and early March in the winter walk at Harlow Carr. They are available in dark blue, deep purple and pale blue and lemon yellow. Look out for them. plant them by your back door and get some early spring colour next year.

PROFILE

A growing passion RHS HARLOW CARR’S NIGEL EATON TALKS TO RHIANA HUGHES ABOUT HIS LIFELONG DEDICATION TO THE ART OF GARDENING. he head of Harlow Carr Shop and Plant Centre, Nigel Eaton has over 36 years’ experience working in garden centres across the UK. His love of all things plant-related started in his youth when he’d help his grandad with the gardening. His grandparents chose to garden for food rather than decoration, and their garden was always full of ‘proper’ veg instead of floral arrangements. Nigel learned a lot from his grandfather, and he still implements these lessons in his work today. Having started his career straight out of school at the age of 17, Nigel hasn’t looked back since and wouldn’t dream of working in any other field. Until 2002, Nigel worked in retail roles at garden centres before making the jump to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Rosemoor gardens in North Devon. Three years later he made the move to RHS Wisely and after 10 years he found himself wanting a change of scenery, so Nigel headed back to the north and took on his current role at RHS Harlow Carr. Nigel is clearly passionate about what he does, and what he loves most about his job is something the rest of us might find rather daunting – his work is never finished. The gardens at Harlow Carr are open all year

T

Always busy: Nigel Eaton

round, and each season brings a new and exciting challenge. As we all know, the British seasons aren’t the most reliable, but Nigel enjoys being kept on his toes, and working at Harlow Carr means he can keep himself busy no matter what the weather throws at us. RHS Harlow Carr has plenty to offer its visitors no matter what time of year they head to the gardens, and Nigel enjoys sharing his knowledge with his customers. Whether they just want to know the best time to head

to the Streamside garden or when to pop up for the Winter Walks, Nigel is there to help. At Harlow Carr’s Shop and Plant Centre, Nigel is always on hand to direct customers and offer them advice on how to get their own gardens to thrive. While Nigel is always there to offer advice to his customers, he’s also got some advice for those who are looking to start their own horticultural career. “A Saturday job in your local garden centre will offer you invaluable experience; work the tills and get to know the products, and make sure you work up relationships with customers.” Alongside this, there are now opportunities to study towards earning horticultural qualifications, such as the RHS Level 2 awards that can be either practical or theorybased. Spending his days at work at Harlow Carr, you might think that when he gets home, Nigel just wants to put his feet up with a cuppa, but you’d be wrong. Nigel is straight out into his own garden wwhen he gets home, proving that gardening is more than just a job for him, it really is his passion.

Big impression SMART, STYLISH AND PRACTICAL... GIVE YOUR PROPERTY THE ‘WOW’ FACTOR WITH A RESIN BOUND DRIVEWAY. e all know about kerb appeal, it’s that allimportant first impression that gives any property the wow factor. It might mean tidying up the front garden, repairing broken gutters or giving your house a new coat of paint, but nothing makes an instant impact quite like the smart, chic and streamlined look of an attractive new driveway from Resindrives.co.uk. Now is the perfect time to upgrade your home’s aesthetic appeal with an approach to be proud of, because resin bound drives are long-lasting, maintenance-free and come in a variety of styles to suit every type of home. And it’s not just driveways that can be transformed. Resin bound surfaces are equally impressive when laid on patios, paths, terraces and roof gardens. Resin bound surfacing is a porous paving material made from a mixture of aggregate stones and resin. It combines the best attributes of other surfaces – the appearance of loose gravel, the strength of concrete and the flexibility of tarmac – while being easier to maintain than all three. Standing water won’t be an issue when you have a resin bound surface. Unlike bonded systems, a resin bound surface allows water to drain through naturally, making it kind to the environment as well as easy on the eye. As well as being immensely practical, resin bound surfacing comes in a choice of over 40 unique colours so whatever type of property you have there’ll be a perfect choice for you.

Property developer and TV presenter Sarah Beeny is certainly a convert. She says: “Resin is definitely the perfect drive finish. It’s so practical – being porous it drains brilliantly and doesn’t create puddles. It’s lovely to walk on, has a long-lasting durable finish and is available in an amazing range of colours. “It’s a bit like a little black dress. You can dress it up in glitzy glam if you want a real Hollywood look, or it can blend perfectly with a natural rural setting.” Sarah was impressed when Resindrives.co.uk worked on her own driveway. She added: “They arrived when they said they would, gave us a clear time schedule for the work and were finished early. “All the fitters were polite and charming and properly cleaned up after themselves. They did a beautiful job and were complete perfectionists.” The benefits of a resin driveway: Slip resistant surface Adds value to your property No planning permission required Suitable for listed buildings, urban or rural properties Completely porous, so no puddles or floods Weed adverse materials Strong and durable so it will outlast other driveway options

MEET THE HEAD

MEET THE HEAD THE LEADERS OF SOME OF THE REGION’S BEST SCHOOLS TELL US ABOUT THEIR PASSION FOR THE JOB.

Westville House School

Adrienne Richmond

THE MOUNT SCHOOL YORK The Mount School is a unique school, being the only all-girl Quaker School in the UK. Their pupils develop into people who live adventurously, and yet, develop sensitivity and an awareness of the world around them. Adrienne Richmond teaches maths at the school. “I remember at Primary School, helping other pupils with their maths when they were stuck,” she says. “It gave me a great sense of satisfaction. One boy said, ‘You’d make a great teacher!’ and that was the start of my passion to share my love of maths with others.” Last year, the school introduced dance and drama as separate subjects into the Key Stage 3 curriculum, and are on track to build a new dance and drama studio in summer 2019. “When I joined The Mount in January 2016, I realised quickly that performing arts is a real strength of the school and how much our girls love drama and dance. “We are all excited by the prospect of having a new studio which will be built at the heart of the school and provide a new facility for use by both the school and the local community. “The building of a new dance and drama studio will be the start of a more extensive facilities development plan and the creation of a performing arts hub. “We will also be resurfacing and extending our tennis/netball courts and refurbishing our swimming pool. This will benefit not only the school, but also the local community who use our facilities extensively each week.” Dalton Terrace, York, YO24 4DD Tel: 01904 667 500 www.mountschoolyork.co.uk 94 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Westville House is a school of academic excellence, with large numbers of children receiving academic scholarships to their senior school of choice. A strong family ethos is promoted throughout the school, providing a welcoming environment and community feel to help pupils become all-rounders, developing skills to the best of their abilities. Entering the teaching profession fulfilled a love of working with children for me,” says Nicola. “The ‘lightbulb moment’ when a child realises they have understood something Recent changes to the school include a much more balanced curriculum, with English and maths having a particularly strong focus. Their afterschool and daytime clubs list has grown massively this year to make sure the school caters for every child, from coding to hockey and gardening to rhythmic dance. “The other strong focus this year is on Learning Support,” she adds. “We pride ourselves on the in-depth knowledge of each child. Recognising if a child needs some extra support and putting the correct plan in place is key to a child’s development. We have a great Learning Support team who work

seamlessly with class teachers to ensure children have the best chance to progress. “Going forward we are very much focussing on growing the school and ensuring that the new Woodlands Nicola Hammond Pre-school continues to flourish. Westville truly is a special place for a child to start their educational journey.” The Westville House Pre-School Open Day is on Saturday 6 October, 10am-12pm. Cundall Manor School Cundall Manor is a busy and vibrant school, but is small enough to know every child. With a wonderful family feel, the school nurtures its pupils, unlocking their talents. The school’s rural North Yorkshire setting greatly contributes to school life, giving children the opportunity to explore, engage and enjoy the great outdoors. John Sample is the joint head, and comes from a family of teachers. “My mother taught for 27 years in the same primary school and I saw the positive impact she had on her pupils and the local community,” he says. “I really enjoy seeing the difference we can make to young people’s lives. We see them grow into confident, polite and caring young adults.” The past few years have seen a significant investment in facilities. Last year, the school opened four new state-of-the-art classrooms in its Senior School and is currently working its way through a structured programme of development to ensure the best possible learning environment for all its children. “We are very proud of our new Wild Wood,” John continues. “This fantastic space encourages our pupils to connect further with

John Sample

nature and learn much more about the environment around them. “We have seen real and exciting changes to our school grounds and the quality of the learning experience. We are very excited to see the next stages of the development plan unfold over the coming years.” Cundall Manor School’s next Open Morning is on Saturday 13 October 2018. MEET THE HEAD

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate One of the main strengths, which distinguishes Queen Ethelburga’s from other educational establishments, is having four separate schools within one collegiate. This creates a small school atmosphere, with the heads of each school and their teams knowing their students individually so they can encourage them to the highest standards, while having the breadth of curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities of a much larger organisation. Steven is a music teacher with a huge enjoyment of the subject, that he enjoys passing onto others. “A school environment makes it easy to arrange group activities, such as choirs and orchestras, and children are very quick to engage and aim for high standards if they are inspired by what they are doing,” he says. “This role has given me the chance to pursue my skills and interests, while working with students to develop their talents and fascination for music.” There are well over one hundred activities available every week, covering music, drama, a variety of sports, academic and other hobbies. The school’s theatre offers an extensive programme of professional and in-house performances, providing a high-quality venue for those interested in performance. The school’s sporting provision, offers high quality sports to all pupils, as well as performance sport courses for those with this specific focus. Thrive@QE is a programme of support for students which involves a wide range of sessions that students can access when facing specific challenges. This encourages students to be proactive in nurturing their own wellbeing, enabling them to become more resilient and independent. Giggleswick School At Giggleswick, success is not just about grades and academic skills. The school puts an equal emphasis on personal development. The school is renowned for its happy, friendly and highly supportive community where children are inspired to develop their personal interests and Mark individual skills. Turnbull Their academic results are strong across a range of subjects, with over half of final year pupils entering Russell Group universities. “I always had a love for geography and, like all new teachers that I now interview, felt I had something to offer in passing on my passion,” says headmaster, Mark Turnbull. “There is nothing more inspiring than being surrounded by the energy of pupils keen to learn.” Giggleswick is also renowned for its wonderful setting in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Sport and outdoor pursuits are therefore key parts of their curriculum, while the landscape also inspires artists, designers, astronomers and more. There are over 70 different clubs and activities happening every week for our pupils to enjoy and challenge themselves. Giggleswick has started a multi-million pound investment in their boarding houses and classroom facilities. This has involved creating the latest in modern, architecturally designed, home from home accommodation for their students – some of which have already been moved in this September. The school has opened a brand new state-of-the art gym and is in the process of planning a dedicated new build upper sixth form house, designed to provide bespoke facilities for more independent living and working, preparing each student for life beyond Giggleswick. Moorfield School Moorfield School achieve the rare balance between academic rigour and creating a fun, friendly and caring environment where boys and girls can thrive. It is a school which focusses on achieving excellence through nurture and collaboration. Strength in the staff ensures that each child is very well taught at every level and leaves the school at 11 with the confidence to take life in their stride at their next school of choice. The school is a beautiful and calm environment for children to grow and develop in, and the staff are united in Paul being proud of the way in which children’s inner Baddeley confidence is developed during their time there. “Like many others I entered the teaching profession because of a love of children and of learning,” says Moorfield School teacher, Paul Baddeley. “Through working with children at a variety of different ages in a variety of different circumstances, I have over time developed a firm philosophy of what I believe to be important in children’s education. “The school will always want to remain true to the traditions and values that have made it such a special place to begin with, but we also want to keep moving and improving at all times. “The first big project for me here will be to evaluate the children’s experiences at play times and to see what exciting developments can come from this.” As well as achieving academic success, the school is proud of it wrap around care and outdoor learning facilities.
