Host Liz Bonnin

Force of nature LIZ BONNIN IS GETTING READY TO HOST NEXT YEAR’S PLANET EARTH II LIVE IN CONCERT TOUR – AND SHE’S COMING TO LEEDS. lanet Earth II Live in Concert, from BBC Studios and the acclaimed BBC Natural History Unit that created TV sensations, Blue Planet II and Dynasties, has announced a UK and Ireland tour for 2020 – which arrives in Leeds in March. Like the Blue Planet II show that toured last year, you will be able to experience sensational footage from the BAFTA and EMMY-award-winning series, backed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Hosting the show this year is Liz Bonnin. We had a quick chat with the science and natural history TV presenter to find out what’s in store.

P

We know you’ve created many of your own animal documentaries, Planet Earth II is well known to be associated with Sir David Attenborough. How does it feel stepping into his shoes?

I don’t think I, or any of my peers, ever think about stepping into Sir David’s shoes – they are far too big to fill! But it’s a very lovely feeling to be part of something so special and to be able to continue to spread the awareness and joy that comes from his world class programmes. It’s a real privilege to be able to do that. Why do you think the Planet Earth II franchise has proven to be so successful? 6 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

I think it stems from decades of expertise, passion and dedication, as well as a healthy dose of ambition to continuously raise the bar. I am constantly amazed at what Sir David and the team conjure up in their imaginations about how else they can deliver wildlife stories and spectacles to their audience, and how inevitably they succeed in the seemingly impossible, thanks to improving technology and lots of hard work. And with Planet Earth II they certainly didn’t disappoint! Just when you think they’ve done it all they manage to bring the natural world even closer to us.

orchestra playing the score of Hans Zimmer sends tingles down my spine. The series was incredibly moving from the comfort of my sofa but I think this audio visual spectacle will be on an entirely different scale – it will be visceral and emotional, and I have no doubt that it will create an incredible energy in the arena, connecting us all to the majesty of nature, to art and music, but also connecting us to each other. So from a personal and somewhat selfish point of view I can’t wait to experience that! But I am also so excited to be able to present it to audiences of all ages. It’s going to be very special indeed.

What would you say to people that have enjoyed watching Planet Earth II on the TV – who are thinking about going to see it Live in concert?

What were your thoughts when you first watched Planet Earth II on the TV – were you as hooked as the rest of the nation?

The thought of seeing these spectacular images of nature on a gigantic, high definition screen while listening to a live

Well I will never forget screaming at the television when that marine iguana was running for its life! Or being completely awestruck at the tiny glass frog protecting its clutch of eggs from wasps using karate kicks, at how stunning the cinematography was and how gripping the scenes were – natural history programming at its best! Planet Earth II Live in Concert is at Leeds’s First Direct Arena on 28 March 2020. For ticket information, visit www.firstdirectarena.com

TRAVEL

The 2020 Cruise Itinerary Line Up The 2020 cruising programme for Hebridean Princess sees this multi award-winning small ship embark on 38 extraordinary cruises around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Orkney and Norway. A Return to Norway

Following the success of Hebridean’s Norwegian sojourn in 2017, Hebridean Princess will once again be spreading her wings in 2020. She will explore the lesser known Hardangerfjord and the almost undiscovered Lysefjord, discover the delights of Sognefjord and the deep blue UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord, and reveal the awe-inspiring inlets and islands between Bergen and Stavanger. Old Favourites, Themes and Guest Speakers

A variety of new Scottish cruises have been introduced, including four new ‘Footloose’ walking itineraries, plus there will be many other familiar favourites. Themed cruises involving cycling, food and drink, gardens, nature and wildlife, arts and architecture, history and heritage will also appear in the 2020 cruising schedule. The success of Hebridean’s Guest Speaker programme will continue to enrich selected departures and knowledgeable on board guides will accompany every itinerary to bring each one to life. Hebridean’s genuinely fully-inclusive pricing structure will continue to include coach transfers from the local airport or railway station to and from Hebridean Princess or for those wishing to drive, secure parking at the port.

Luxury onboard... 30 individually designed cabins are tastefully furnished with the best of classic and contemporary design

Hebridean’s 2020 European River Cruise Collection For those wishing to explore a little further afield, Hebridean’s European River cruise programme transports guests to the very heart of the continent on board the 1930s style river cruiser, MS Royal Crown. From the very inception of Hebridean Island Cruises over 30 years ago, the company wanted its success to be judged, not on how many passengers cruise with them each year, but on how well they look after them. As river cruisers and cruise ships become larger, many carrying hundreds of people, the contrast between a small, personal company such as Hebridean and mass market travel becomes even more apparent. In fact, the only thing which is big about a Hebridean river cruise – is the difference. A Hebridean river cruise on board MS Royal Crown attracts a of maximum of just 70 guests, cared for by a dedicated crew and exceptional Hebridean Team, providing an unequalled level of personal service. Their warm smiles and a genuine

desire to please are motivated by pride in the job and never by the expectation of a gratuity. Hebridean’s all-inclusive, no-tipping price policy ensures this. Travelling with Hebridean means that you will discover very special destinations, ranging from romantic cities, quaint villages and historical gems to private residences and grand palaces – with many unusual places in between. And as many of the company’s guests will tell you, a Hebridean holiday is as far away from the average cruise as it is possible to be. Grand River Voyages

All 2020 cruises have been designed to offer the opportunity to combine cruises with the minimum of repetition, presenting guests with a selection of stunning, extended voyages that discover the very best of what Europe’s majestic waterways have to offer.

Living the Valletta lifestyle MALTA’S TIMELESS CAPITAL CITY OFFERS HISTORY, CULTURE AND CUISINE. alletta, Malta’s magical capital city, is where modern living meets historic beauty. A recent wave of regeneration projects has given new life to Malta’s Baroque capital, including AX Hotels’ two newest boutique hotels in the city – the luxurious, five-star Rosselli – AX Privilege and the urban AX The Saint John. Nowadays, Valletta acts as a meeting point for creatives, culinary connoisseurs and history enthusiasts

alike. Having just passed on the 2018 baton for the title of European Capital of Cultural, Valletta is thriving on its historical and cultural richness like never before. Built by the noble Knights of St John, Valletta is leading the way for travellers seeking an elegant Mediterranean lifestyle experience. The city is truly in its prime, with the vibrant cultural scene also being injected with a fresh dose of museums, bars and restaurants, for both locals and tourists to enjoy.

TRAVEL

Wining and dining in Valletta Valletta is an ideal all-year round destination for wining and dining. From casual nights out to elegant dinners, Valletta offers a variety of restaurants to choose from. Classic cafés lining the streets, welcoming passers-by with the aroma of freshly-roasted coffee beans, are the perfect outlet for quick snacks. Alternatively, the popular Cheeky Monkey Gastropub is the ideal place to enjoy a casual lunch or dinner, be it a delicious burger, hearty mains or a plate of ‘cheeky’ nibbles to share. Acting as the go-to destination for the island’s funloving folk, Cheeky Monkey’s tempting drinks menu cheekily states that getting drunk is permitted. Besides already-established restaurants, Valletta has seen a rise in innovative dining outlets that are revolutionising the culinary scene. One example is the recently-opened Merchants Street restaurant, Grain. Having introduced a unique sharing concept, Grain’s casual atmosphere is elevated by a bespoke menu. Guests are encouraged to savour diverse flavours and share plates, rather than following the traditional threecourse sequence. Although Grain’s menu is primarily Mediterranean – flaunting dishes such as the Classic Caesar Salad and Wild Seabass – it does feature oriental items such as the mouth-watering Beef Yakitori. The adventurous theme also extends into its drinks menu, as wines are served by the glass, giving visitors the opportunity to taste different flavours and enhance their dining experience.

Exploring history in Valletta Apart from a flourishing culinary scene, Valletta is also a designated World Heritage City that has been described by UNESCO as ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’. Naturally, the capital boasts numerous museums that share the island’s rich history. That history comes to life inside buildings such as the Grandmaster’s Palace, in which visitors can see the extravagantly adorned state rooms built by the Order of the Knights of St John. Here, one can also visit the Palace Armoury, which houses one of the most impressive collections of arms in the world. Malta’s wartime history shines through every corner of the city, even beneath

the ground. In fact, Valletta’s underground consists of tunnels, cisterns and chambers that served multiple uses throughout history. The Lascaris War Rooms, for example, are a complex network of subterranean tunnels that were dug out by hand by British troops to serve as their Headquarters from 1940, and later as NATO’s Communication Centre between 1967 and 1977, before being closed down and reopened into the museum that stands today. Other museums dotted around the city invite visitors to delve deep into Malta’s history, such as the War Museum at Fort St Elmo and the National Museum of Archaeology.

Immerse yourself in Valletta’s culture There are several historical buildings, such as Casa Rocca Piccola, which also act as a window into the way of life of Maltese aristocrats. In fact, the five-star luxury hotel Rosselli – AX Privilege is located within a meticulously restored 17th century Palazzo, which once belonged to the noble goldsmith, Pietro Rosselli, and his wife, Alusietta Massa.

Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, located a stone’s throw away from Merchants Street, is home to two Caravaggio masterpieces. Here, you’ll find stunning artefacts and artworks, as well as cultural events and religious masses taking place on a regular basis. Even if you’re not religious, this 16th century church’s interiors are a sight to behold. Besides its rich past, Valletta is currently witnessing history in the making. The entrance to the city has been given an architectural revamp by celebrated architect Renzo Piano, who designed the new parliament building in Valletta, as well as the City Gate, the stunning Triton Fountain and Pjazza Teatru Rjal. Last year also saw the opening of the greenpowered Malta National Community Art Museum, MUZA. Book your stay at AX The Saint John or Rosselli – AX Privilege and explore Valletta inside out during your trip to Malta. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 21

A wide shot of the Italian Alps precedes a beautiful montage of Rossano Brazzi – wearing sunglasses and smoking a cigarette – hurling round winding mountain harpins to the symphony of a screaming Lamborghini Miura’s V12 in a duet with Quincy Jones and Matt Monroe’s ‘On Days Like These’. and introduces the antagonists, the Mafia, as they dispose of the crumpled, smoking remains – with the aid of a bulldozer and a mountainside. It’s a sequence familiar to tens of millions across the globe – the result of countless Christmastime and holiday repeats since The Italian Job was released in 1969 – and certainly, it’s hard to think of another movie with a cast list so eclectic that it ranges from Noel Coward

to Benny Hill, via Michael Caine. It’s also hard to believe that half a century has passed since The Italian Job brought its own cheerful brand of Euroscepticism to the silver screen. What is impossible to deny, however, is the cultural impact the film has had; generations would hum along to SelfPreservation Society or marvel at the spectacle of Fred Emney battling with Fiat 500s on the streets of Turin.

Mark Hinchliffe

It is not surprising, then, that its powerful influence on seasoned curator, collector and designer, Mark Hinchliffe has lead him to leave behind his Grade II listed 19th century Italianate Chapel in Harrogate, to board a coach wrapped in the British flag with a team of resident chefs and artists, and drive from Harrogate to Turin via London and back again, in a bid to not only bring the

famous film back to life 50 years on but pay homage to “how we Britons have become deeply influenced by Italian culture”. At the same time, he also plans to place a 36ft replica of the film’s infamous Harrington Legionnaire coach by Royal Academician artist, Richard Wilson on top of a six-storey building in the heart of Turin, which will be wrapped in a reproduction of the cliff edge taken from the last scene of the original movie. Here, Mark talks to Northside about his ‘great idea’, paying homage to the UK and why he was inspired by the cult sixties classic. So, Mark, what’s the ‘great idea’?

Picture this: it’s 1969, a feline young Michael Caine plays Charlie Croker, the cheeky cockney scamp who plans to pinch a fortune in gold bullion from an armoured car convoy in Turin, having fixed the traffic lights to create gridlock preventing police pursuit and using as

“This is a once in a lifetime stockpile of Italian and British cultural celebrations. Such a grand series of events and passionate art will probably never happen again.”

cover the thousands of English football fans in the city for an away fixture with Italy (at the time we were still glowing from our 1966 World Cup victory). But first he must get the go-ahead from ageing crime lord Mr Bridger, and ultimately, the film reaches its climax with the famed cliff-hanger ending. Now fast-forward half a century, and as Britain prepare to leave the EU this October [2019], we will take a coach from Harrogate and drive to Turin via London, wrapped in the British flag and filmed in a ‘Carry On’ style. On board the coach will be an eclectic mix of British artists and chefs, who have each drawn on Italian influence in different ways. Simultaneously, we plan to place a life-size replica of ‘The Italian Job’ coach by Royal Academician artist, Richard Wilson on top of a six-storey apartment block in central Turin to signify the opening of the Artissima Art Fair on 31 October. The director of the Torino Film Festival [the second largest film festival in Italy, following the Venice Film Festival] has even asked that the coach remains on the apartment block until 22 November, as The Italian Job will open the 37th edition of the festival. This is a once in a lifetime stockpile of Italian and British cultural significance and celebrations all at once. Such a grand series of events and passionate art will probably never happen again. Fifty years on from its release, what inspired you to pay homage to The Italian Job?

The Italian Job was released on 2 June 1969, which is coincidentally The National Italian Day in Italy, and also my birthday. Fifty years later we plan to bring something back to Italy through a cultural intervention, demonstrating how the British over the last 50 years have become deeply influenced by Italian culture through art, design, food and wine.

Why take a coach full of British chefs and artists on a cross-country road trip to Turin?

Tell us a little bit about the artists on board.

The Italian city of Turin is famous for many things – its outstanding architecture, the Juventus football team, the views of the Alps, and for being the country’s northern cultural and business capital. But it’s also made two enormous contributions to the car world: it’s the birthplace of Fiat, and it’s setting for the iconic piece of British cinema, The Italian Job. So, it seemed like the natural destination. Did Brexit play a part in your plans?

Not initially – but as the dates changed from April to May to June, the irony began to unravel. All films now have to be inspected for Brexit resonance, and it’s pretty much inescapable here – we are living in the real-life remake of The Italian Job. Kennedy Martin’s original ending had the gang making it to Switzerland only to find the Mafia waiting for them. However, Deeley conceived the cliff-hanger to cut costs and facilitate a sequel which was ultimately never made. In so doing, he had unwittingly created a denouement which is a perfect metaphor for the current state of the Brexit process. We’ve all had enough – whether you voted to stay or leave – and so we are flying the flag for Britain at a time when it is needed the most. It’s all positive. What lead you to balance a life-size coach on the edge of a 36ft building with the help of Royal Academician artist, Richard Wilson?

Wilson was commissioned to create a rooftop sculpture for the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill on Sea in 2012 entitled: “Hang on a Minute Lads, I’ve got a great idea”. Inspired by The Italian Job’s final scene, he made an automated sculpture of a full-sized replica of the coach, appearing to teeter on the edge of the roof. In 2015, Wilson was then commissioned to install the same work on the roof of the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong. The coach was initially intended to be an edition of three, so you can imagine that for its final outing, there would be no better place than the centre of Turin. Upon hearing my ridiculous idea, I was introduced to Richard by a friend, and the rest is history.

How Richard Wilson’s replica of The Italian Job coach will look

Gathering the cars for such an event was vital and although the original Mark I Minis were destroyed after filming, a 70 strong fleet will descend on the Artissima Art Fair on 30 October direct from the UK and will be filmed and photographed below Wilson’s Harrington Legionnaire. It’s a serendipitous coincide. The Italian Job – best heist film ever?

As the Mini Coopers rock from side to side along a sewage tunnel, with four million in gold bullion in their boots and Quincy Jones’s infectious score swinging away in the background, ask yourself this: is there a film – certainly a British film – that delivers a greater infusion of pure joy than The Italian Job? It has just about everything you want in a film: action, humour and undoubtedly the best car chase ever filmed. The pursuit through the streets, pavements and sewers is very inventive, and the idea that the traffic jam could have been created by a computer virus seems very forwardthinking for 1969.

Tell us a little bit about your partnership with Stuzzi – will they be rustling up any Italian inspired cuisine?

Stuzzi are winners of the Yorkshire Life Food & Drink Awards Restaurant of the Year and are featured in the Michelin Guide. They are four crazy English lads who make Jamie Oliver look boring and are passionate about all things Italian. The chefs will prepare Italian street food at pop-up venues across Turin, including the Lingotto Fiat Building, Turin Royal Palazzo and to the backdrop of Wilson's teetering Harrington Legionnaire coach. The timing of the whole thing has become simply bonkers. It really is an event not to be missed. Though we never did get to see Charlie Croker’s “great idea” come to fruition, now, finally, we have an ingenious plan that will see little bits and pieces of British influence come together in one of the biggest celebrations of Italian culture. Now that’s what we call a happy ending.

Don’t forget the importance of the cars.

The film includes one of the best car chases of all time – which helped to make Mini the worldwide success it has become – as well as an unforgettable opening sequence, which sees car after beautiful super car meeting fiery ends.

Debbie Lawson: Debbie is a British sculptor whose work, combining contemporary and traditional techniques, is held in public and private collections worldwide. With the help of Grayson Perry, her eight foot, carpet-clad: ‘Red Bear’ was a hit at the Royal Academy 2019 summer exhibition. Graham Dolphin: Graham’s work frequently explores the concepts of selfidentification and idolism, included an ongoing series of pieces inspired by the memorialisation of deceased celebrities. He is known for his meticulous and laborious artwork created using various media, including scrupulously reconstructing the shrines dedicated to rock stars that are often popularised by fan communities. John M Robinson: John composes paintings of photographs and films that he has taken from performances in museums and galleries both nationally and internationally. He uses painting as a tool to draw our attention to a single moment and has faith that the moment will hold inside it the whole great mess of a story.

Mark (right) with artist Graham Dolphin

Mark and his talented roster of artists and chefs influenced by the taste buds and imaginations of Italy will leave behind the rolling Yorkshire hills on 26 October, arriving in Turin for the start of the Artissima Art Fair on 31 October, which will run until 3 November. For those of you unable to follow the Italian Job-inspired road trip, the official documentary is scheduled to launch at the 2020 Harrogate Film Festival early next year.

THE DIARY

A City Less Grey A NEW URBAN ART SCHEME IS BRINGING A SPLASH OF COLOUR TO LEEDS CITY CENTRE. ompared with our continental cousins, the architecture of Britain’s modern cities leaves not a lot to be desired. The aftermath of World War II prompted the need to rapidly rebuild, leaving behind a landscape dominated by concrete jungles, and while very occasionally we might get a glimpse of blue sky, red brick and rainbow-hued fountains, the overwhelming colour palette of many of Yorkshire’s bustling metropolises is somewhat uninspiring. A City Less Grey has kick-started an exhilarating time for urban art in Leeds, by injecting colour into corners of the city, and also brought the UK’s tallest piece of street art to the North – Athena Rising by NOMAD Clan adorns the full length of the east elevation of Platform, visible from Leeds Station and beyond. Initiated by East Street Arts and funded by LeedsBID, the talents of local and nationally based artists are used to create semi-permanent and permanent installations throughout the city centre – at sites of historic relevance and regeneration to new landmark corporate buildings – each commissioned to deliver a bespoke piece of work to transform a site in their own unique style, with carefully considered emotional connection and identity and the incorporation of poignant references to the local environment. The project began on Kirkgate, the oldest street in Leeds, on the hoarding covering the collapsed First White Cloth Hall. Artwork at Sovereign Square, a second piece on Kirkgate, Platform and Vicar Lane followed, firmly putting Leeds on the map as a city committed to developing its public art voice. This summer [2019] saw Kirkstall receive its very own injection of colour, with local artist Rebecca Appleby tasked with creating a stand-out sculpture entitled: ‘Latent Power’ to reflect the community’s local heritage and industrial landscape. Born in Leeds, Rebecca’s

C

36 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

work is a continual exploration of the contemporary urban landscape, examining the ever-present cohabitation and conflict between industry and nature. Through a series of techniques developed over a 20-year career, Rebecca’s works are strongly defined by a series of marks and surface contusions that mimic both the manufactured process of industry and the seemingly sporadic, yet calculated occurrences found in nature. Exploring and echoing both the ephemeral and established solidity of her surroundings, she offers the viewer a thought-provoking dialogue of colour, line and movement. Earlier this year, she enlisted the help of Year 5 pupils at Hawsworth Primary School, alongside participants from Hollybush Farm Day Centre to explore their own responses to the industrial roots of the area and the changing face of its communities. “We undertook several community engagements including the Kirkstall Festival and Kirkstall Arts Trail, working with a group of adults at Hollybush Farm and school children at Hawksworth Wood Primary School,” says Rebecca. “It was a wonderful opportunity to work with the local community to help inform my design, and each community group gave me an insight into what Kirkstall means to them. “It is heart-warming to see such passion and enthusiasm for a local community from such a wide range of people. We had some incredible creative sessions that sparked ideas and conversation which have all informed the final piece. The groups also produced some incredible artwork that will be reproduced onto banners for Kirkstall centre.” The striking yellow, metal sculpture has been chosen specifically to represent industry and modern construction, from road markings to vehicles and machinery, while the design represents a

deconstructed water wheel emulating the wheel that powered the forge that employed generations of workers in the local area. “Latent Power is a celebration of the rich industrial heritage and a symbol of the innovative spirit that continues to drive this community. I’m absolutely thrilled to have a piece of public art displayed in my home city of Leeds and I am proud to stand back and see all the ideas and hard work come to fruition.” East Street Arts is a strategic agency for artists’ development, place-making and social change operating on an international scale, supporting artists at all levels and stages of their careers. Over the course of two decades, it has supported over 20,000 artists to flourish and build sustainable careers and has created a whole host of galleries and studios for artists to display their work. For the past 25 years, East Street Arts has challenged the norm and “sustained the alternative” through creating the space, time, resources and opportunities for artists to be innovative, pioneering and influential within the cities they inhabit and create. The ‘A City Less Grey’ programme received national recognition at the Planning Awards 2018 - taking home the Award for Best Use of Arts, Culture or Sport in Place-Making, whilst NOMAD Clan’s Athena Rising and hand-painted stainless steel sculpture, Hare of Harehills by local artist Ian Kirkpatrick have also been shortlisted for the 2019 Leeds Architecture Awards. “We want to further cement Leeds’ place as a leader for incubating talent and attracting international names to the city; embracing the culture of street art, changing the landscape of our buildings, hoardings and hidden alleys,” says Elaine Barrow, Public Art & Engagement Project Leader at East Street Arts. “A City Less Grey has the potential to appeal to the growth in cultural tourism, stay rooted and support local talent, but profile the city on an international level.”

GARDENS

Historic gardens for all to see GOLDSBOROUGH HALL’S ARE UNDERGOING A STUNNING TRANSFORMATION AND ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AS PART OF THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME. RACHEL MARTIN DROPPED BY TO FIND OUT MORE. rstwhile home to royalty, including HRH Princess Mary and her husband Viscount Lascelles (later the sixth Earl of Harewood) and once occupied by Oliver Cromwell’s army, Goldsborough Hall stands out among the stately homes that speckle the Yorkshire countryside. Built in c1620 for Sir Richard Hutton, acting Lord Chief Justice, the hall was remodelled in the 1750s by eminent

architects, Robert Adam and John Carr of York. Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles later went on to make a number of changes to the house in the 1920s and transformed Goldsborough Hall into their first family home and country residence. Nestled within 12 acres of pristinely landscaped grounds that boast elevated views over its historic gardens and parkland, today’s owners, Mark and Clare Oglesby, continue the tradition started by

Princess Mary of opening the awardwinning gardens twice a year as part of the National Garden Scheme, and work hard to achieve horticultural excellence by leading restoration and improvement projects, with a helping hand, or two, from head gardener, Mark Waller. Here, Clare tells Northside her thoughts on royal reinforcement and adapting to the modern age and walks us through the history of Goldsborough Hall gardens.

GARDENS

Tell us a little bit about the history of Goldsborough Hall gardens.

A newly-constructed glasshouse takes pride of place in the Kitchen Garden (above), while the stone lions great guests to the hall (below)

Princess Mary and her husband made quite a few changes to the house and gardens after moving into Goldsborough Hall in 1922. Namely, creating a vista to the south, with the planting of the walled terrace and Beech Avenue and the herbaceous border, which is centred on a sundial. The Lime Tree Walk was planted by royalty from 1922-1930. Her Royal Highness and Viscount Lascelles planted the first tree in 1922, with the remaining 33 trees planted by honoured guests, including King George V and Queen Mary. The Emperor of Japan gave Mary some Japanese cherry trees as a wedding gift, though they would still have been in their infancy when she opened Goldsborough Hall gardens on 4 July 1928 as part of the newly created National Garden Scheme. She received an overwhelming response and opened the gardens the following two years, until 1930, when she moved to Harewood House, following the death of her father-in-law, the 5th Earl. Have you taken any inspiration from Goldsborough Hall’s regal residents?

Today, the gardens can be considered the completion of Princess Mary’s vision. The beech hedges are fully grown and the 34 trees which make up the Lime Tree Walk have matured, as have the Emperor of Japan’s cherry trees. The herbaceous borders and lavender lined rose garden have been replanted in a Gertrude-Jekyll style, whose influence on British horticultural design has been pervasive to this day, and a new afternoon tea terrace was built in 2012, which is

awash with the ‘Yorkshire Princess’ rose, named after HRH Princess Mary. In addition, the overgrown woods have been cleared to let the spring bulbs, snowdrops and winter aconites shine through. How are the Goldsborough Hall gardens adapting to the modern age?

We don’t work in isolation, only thinking about the gardens and the plants, we appreciate nature as a whole. We see where the gardens meet the countryside and how wildlife moves around between these different habitats. We also learn how to work with the sensitivities of the Hall, the challenges across the wider estate and the need to help care for these special places. What exciting projects have you been working on?

Goldsborough Hall has a fully working kitchen garden that supplies fresh produce for our dining room. When it comes to food miles, we are very old fashioned and prefer them in feet and inches. Since 2011, we grew vegetables in the old kitchen garden, but the dilapidated greenhouse was in needed of replacement. In 2017, we began work on a new kitchen garden, with the aim of providing our team of chefs with the finest, freshest ingredients, whilst also creating a beautiful space for guests to enjoy. The glasshouse was constructed by Woodpecker Joinery, a family firm who have been awarded a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales and in early 2018, a beautiful traditional glasshouse was built from reclaimed brick and cedar wood to sit as the centre piece of the newly restored kitchen gardens. GARDENS

The rest of the kitchen garden has been laid out with huge raised beds, requiring half a mile of oak beams, all centred around a large fountain and rill water feature. Here, our gardener, Mark produces a wide variety of produce for the kitchen, as well as cut flowers for the Hall. We are also busy sowing a wildflower garden (which will take around two years to fully come to fruition) to help to conserve a healthy natural environment and the wildlife it brings with it. What lies behind the garden’s bold colour spectrum?

The gardens at Goldsborough have evolved over many decades, adding new features and plantings to create a garden that is now rich in character and beauty. At its heart, it remains a family garden and while its scale is grand, it retains an intimacy in its planting and design. Spring is a riot of shades and scents, with displays of daffodils, winter aconites and snowdrops, while summer brings billowing borders packed with colourful cosmos (new for 2019) and wonderful summer flowering fruit trees, while the Kitchen Garden showcases a range of seasonal edibles. From late September onwards we expect to see the first signs of autumn 44 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

throughout the gardens – the trees begin to show hints of seasonal hues and continue to change right through until late November. So, there is always a different, vibrant landscape to be seen. What inspired you to design a garden that symbolises an ecological and naturalistic approach to planting and design?

Having the opportunity to design an outdoor space is one of the most enjoyable things, as you are the catalyst to creating beautiful plots and new habitats. Since we began, we have taken on more and more landscaping projects, which is incredibly rewarding, as we get to make real changes to the look and feel of gardens and make an impact in one of the UK’s most stunning natural environments. What do the gardens mean to you?

That has a two-fold answer! Professionally, we are trying our best to ensure that our designs are implemented to a standard that will not only look good but will stand the test of time. Personally, I love to see how the gardens changes through the year, as well as the infectious enthusiasm and creativity that emanates from head gardener, Mark Waller and visitors that I meet.

How do you hope visitors react when they see the gardens?

I hope people are intrigued and excited by our gardens. Overall, our aim is to provide a little horticultural inspiration, as well as a relaxing moment for visitors and a beautiful backdrop to your visit. Most days, you’ll find Mark at work, whatever the weather. He’ll be happy to tell you more about the gardens and share a few of his tips, or you can just take a seat and enjoy the results of his hard labour. What’s your favourite area within the gardens?

There are so many. I love the fruit and vegetable growing areas, where hard work, fun and expert skills can result in a rich harvest. I also love stumbling across a surprising new view, quiet corner or plant that I had not noticed before. Are the gardens open to the public year-round?

Those wishing to see the gardens may do so by booking to stay or dine. The gardens are also open twice yearly under the National Garden Scheme, and for three days in February [snowdrops], one day in June [roses] and one day in July [herbaceous borders]. We are working towards the day when the gardens will be regularly open to the public.

Most tulips benefit from a later planting to reduce the risk of virus, so the end of October and into November is ideal. Varieties to choose are Princess Irene, Queen of the night and Angelique. As Dahlias and Cannas get frosted, allow the foliage to brown, then cut them back and lift and store frost-free in boxes of dry soil or wood-shavings. Dust the cut stems with sulphur powder to reduce rot. Broad beans can now be sown for an early June crop next year, sow directly into the soil whilst it is still warm. Sweet peas, directly sown now, will be also hardened off to stand the winter and flower earlier next year. Varieties to choose are Cupani, Gwendoline and Hi Scent.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR YOU!

Plant half your Japanese onion sets to give you an earlier crop next year. This month is also the time to plant garlic bulbs; they are late to the shops this year because they couldn’t be lifted in August, due to the weather patterns. Prune back roses as they finish flowering to open up the bushes and to prevent the plants being blown around in autumn gales. Top dress with a granular rose food such as Toprose.

Remember to keep up the torchlight slug and snail patrol, the more picked up and removed now the less in the garden to start on tender shoots in the spring. In your greenhouse or tunnel, a sowing of winter lettuce or salad carrots and radishes can be still be made for a late winter or early spring crop.

When late strawberries have finished cropping, clean all the old foliage and stray runners from the plants to remove any host areas for fungal diseases to over winter. Top dress with a general high potash fertiliser.

Turn back the clock on ageing skin LEEDS-BASED AESTHETIC HEALTH ARE PIONEERING THE NEW CUTERA® TITAN™; A NEW TREATMENT THAT CAN REINVIGORATE AND TIGHTEN YOUR SKIN.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that as we age, our appearance can greatly change and once youthful, glowing skin loses much of its structural support. Throughout adulthood, the production of collagen and elastin – vital structural proteins within the tissues – begin to diminish, causing the slow decline of the skin’s condition, until one day, you realise your skin has grown thin and loose. The Cutera® Titan™ gives you an allnatural option to actively turn back the clock on ageing skin, using light energy to stimulate new collagen growth deep 52 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

beneath your skin’s surface. Promising to effectively lift and tighten the skin with no downtime, it’s an ideal solution to enhance your youthful and healthy appearance without the need for surgery, recovery time, or injections. As with many aesthetic procedures, it comes with a lot of questions: Is it safe? Is it successful? Does it hurt? To answer the above, and more, we spoke to Claire Hill, patient services and development manager of Aesthetic Health Leeds who explains the ins and outs of one of the most advanced, non-surgical skin tightening treatments available.

Dr Julia Sevi, clinical director at Aesthetic Health, is a global leader and is internationally respected for her scientific yet holistic approach to medical aesthetics, regeneration and health. She leads this highly experienced and attentive team

BEAUTY

Before and after examples of how Cutera® Titan™ can improve, reinvigorate and tighten your skin

What is Cutera® Titan®?

As early as your mid-twenties, collagen production in your body begins to decline. This can result in the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and loose skin. However, boosting your natural collagen production is possible. Cutera® Titan™ is a revolutionary device utilising safe infrared technology to effectively lift and tighten the skin. As the light beams penetrate the skin, thermal energy heats the skin below the surface encouraging collagen production. This results in an instant tightening effect and long-lasting collagen stimulation for natural rejuvenation from within. The result is toned, more youthful-looking skin. What can I expect from the treatment?

This FDA-approved device provides very little discomfort. Thanks to the built-in, continuous cooling mechanism, the epidermis (surface skin) is completely protected while the deeper layers of skin are precisely targeted. The treatment is non-invasive and lasts under an hour and is suitable for all skin tones and types. The most popular areas to be treated are the face, jawline and neck – however the abdomen, arms and inner thighs can also be treated with fantastic results.

When will I see results?

If you’re considering Cutera® Titan™, Northside recommends seeing Dr Julia Sevi and her team at Aesthetic Health, the first doctor-led aesthetic clinic in England to receive an overall outstanding rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The North Leeds-based clinic encompass a meticulous approach to healthy ageing that blends aesthetic and anti-ageing medicine into unique multidimensional treatment plans, whilst optimising wellbeing both inside and out. The clinic works collaboratively to deliver care that stimulates patients’ natural regeneration and repair and is an accredited member of Save Face UK.

Some patients see results immediately. However, for most patients, the results are gradual over a three to six-month period as new collagen is formed and the skin tightens. Although a single treatment has produced very good results for many patients, it is quite common for patients to have two or three treatments over a few months.

Both men and women are already enjoying the benefits of the Cutera® Titan™.To discuss what you’re hoping to achieve, an initial consultation will help determine how the treatment can be tailored for your specific requirements. Call 0113 269 7274 or visit www.aesthetichealth.co.uk

What does it feel like? ®

With each Cutera Titan™ pulse you will feel a brief heating sensation. Some patients are more comfortable taking a mild pain reliever beforehand, but most patients are comfortable without any medication. Are there any side effects?

Immediately following the treatment, you may notice some redness and mild swelling in the treated area. Both should dissipate within a few hours. With no downtime, patients are free to return to their everyday activities immediately.

Am I a good candidate for the procedure?

Throughout adulthood, collagen production within the body decreases. The skin on the abdominals is a common area for this to occur, especially in individuals who have lost significant weight such as postpregnancy. Since the procedure heats tissue under the skin’s surface, patients of any skin type or age can be treated. Cutera® Titan™ provides a safe, accessible treatment option for those who seek skin tightening without the worry of a surgical procedure. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 53

Special experience FAR REMOVED FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE, THE PHEASANT OFFERS A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF DELICATE PRESENTATION AND HEARTY CUISINE, SPEARHEADED BY CHEF-PROPRIETOR PETER NEVILLE. BY RACHEL MARTIN. here isn’t a village in the land that wouldn’t look better bathed in sunshine and framed against a cloudless sky. This was the delightful weather that greeted us at The Pheasant, but truth be told Harome needs no such enhancement. It has everything you could wish for in a North Yorkshire village: a gorgeous setting, delightful walks on the doorstep and arguably one of the most beautiful country hotels, whose owner and head chef learned from some of the best in the business. This tiny village in the heart of chocolate-box countryside is home to just 261 residents [according to the 2011 UK census]. It’s around two miles southeast of the market town of Helmsley,

T

and 24 miles north-east of York, and is idyllically rural with just 109 households. Just arriving at The Pheasant Hotel is an experience in itself. It’s a sympathetically converted 18th century farmstead that has made its home in a former blacksmith, village shops and compendium of outbuildings, with gnarled wood beams and garlands of pheasant feathers, and a chef-patron, Peter Neville, who honed his craft working under Andrew Pern at the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome and Claude Bosi at his two-Michelinstarred restaurant Hibiscus in London. Peter is an advocate of wild, foraged food and grows and cultivates vegetables and garden herbs throughout the year to

keep the kitchen well stocked with the freshest produce, and it becomes quickly apparent that presentation is a vital ingredient here. We proceeded to work our way through a succession of intricately assembled dishes, accompanied by freshly baked and tortuously warm homemade bread with salted butter (they churn their own butter at The Pheasant). We started with herb fed chicken wings, tarragon mousse, wild mushroom, roasted chicken juices and egg yolk (£12), which takes full advantage of great British produce. The chicken dissolves in the mouth and the wild mushrooms provide a solid base for the sharp flavours of the tarragon mousse to leap from. A truffle and heritage

cauliflower risotto appears next, thick and rich with Keen’s cheddar (£10). Combined with sage and onion, the dish is earthy, the flavours an amalgam that evokes a balmy late-summer morning foraging in sun-drenched woodland. The sumac glazed duck, fresh tamarind, charred roscoff onions, pear and wild rice (£26) that followed proved to be deliciously delicate. The duck was tender and succulent and set the bar high for more meaty mains to come. Sixty-day salt aged sirloin ensued (£32). Served pink, it was rich and flavoursome and perfectly complemented by caramelised endive, oxtail and pommes anna. It is wonderfully simple but presented with a real panache and complexity that

beautifully betrays its basic beginnings. A dessert of warm pistachio and olive oil cake (£10) was rich, decadent – but oh-so refined. The sweetness of the mulled pineapple and coconut sorbet beautifully balanced with sharp lemongrass. The poached hazel pear and Michel Cluizel dark chocolate mousse (£11) made good use of the bountiful fruit trees growing in the courtyard and was rounded off with jasmine cream. We finished our lunch with coffee and petit fours (£5). Everything about The Pheasant is charming, from the staff to the tartan soft furnishings and the ivy-clad terrace overlooking the village duck pond. Peter combines ingredients intelligently to create classic seasonal menus packed

with modern flavour, while clinging lovingly to a picturesque and pastoral landscape. The Pheasant Hotel Harome, Near Helmsley, North Yorkshire, YO62 5JG Tel: 01439 771241 Email: reservations@ thepheasanthotel.com www.thepheasanthotel.com

revamped menu offering modern British cuisine, courtesy of Provenance Inns & Hotels’ new group chef Jason Wardill, provides me with the ideal opportunity for a return visit to the West Park Hotel in Harrogate. At first glance the culinary fare on offer looks relatively routine with burgers, steaks and fish and chips among the choices. arrives daily from Hartlepool, and many of the fruit and vegetables comes from the restaurant’s own kitchen garden in Felixkirk. Just as crucially, those painstakingly sourced ingredients are cooked with loving care and served up with no little panache to make for an exceptional dining experience. The restaurant was just as warm and welcoming as I remembered with soft lighting and the late evening sun casting long shadows on the gorgeous wooden floors. We began with a couple of spectacular

seafood starters. My roast king scallops, seared to perfection leaving a meltingly soft middle, came with a peanut crunch, shards of flatbread, crisp lettuce and a pickled daikon and lime dressing. It was a new take on a familiar starter and worked beautifully. Across the table my friend Kirsten was swooning over king prawns served with a sweet potato risotto, Yorkshire cured

ham, basil and palm sugar (£8.95). This was another inventive dish with the creamiest savoury risotto the perfect match for meaty, zingy fresh prawns. The choice of main courses includes an attractive and inventive selection of dishes to appeal to all tastes including vegetarians and vegans. We visited on a Wednesday which is also steak night, a cracking deal for a top quality budget midweek night off with a 10oz steak and house wine for £39.95 per couple. But on this occasion, while we definitely had our carnivore heads on, other meaty dishes tweaked our interest. In my case it was the treacle beef (£16). The treacle cure certainly provided extra depth of flavour to a gloriously tender flat iron steak, served with pomme purÊe, picked red onion and charred broccoli. Every single element of this dish was well thought out and made for a deeply satisfying whole. Our other main course of pork loin (£15.50) was similarly impressive. The meat was moist and flavoursome and the combination of parmesan crust, butternut squash, parmentier potato, crispy shallots and sherry vinegar was another supremely well balanced dish. We shared a bowl of lovely fresh and slightly crisp seasonal vegetables (£3.50). Incidentally, while I’m raving about how tasty everything was, it’s worth pointing out that it looked good too, artfully plated up and delivered on handsome plates in dark autumnal shades. A minor point perhaps but it all adds up to a superior dining experience

that has been thoroughly thought through. There’s an excellent wine list including some big hitters for those celebration evening and more modest choices in the under-£20 bracket. There’s also a much better than average selection of wines by the glass and we sampled excellent medium-sized glasses of Pinot Grigio (£7.95), Picpoul de Pinet (£9.75) and Pinot Noir (£9.45). Our meal ended on a high note with a very moreish warm rhubarb clafoutis (£5.95) with rhubarb jam, amaretto anglaise, vanilla ice cream and candied almond brittle, and a very generous selection of Yorkshire cheeses (£8.95) with biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes for my pudding-averse companion.

With its warm and welcoming atmosphere and a prime setting overlooking The Stray, even if you just pop in for a coffee, West Park is a special venue. The restaurant menu make it unmissable. West Park Hotel 19 West Park, Harrogate, HG1 1BJ Tel: 01423 524471 www.thewestparkhotel.com

Neon lighting, funky tuk tuks, corrugated tin and beautiful street art adorn the ceilings and walls. Sweet and spicy aromas bombard the senses as the friendly ‘Zaapsters’ hustle around the restaurant floor taking their orders and serving dishes. The open kitchen affords customers an opportunity to glimpse the busy Thai chefs weaving their magic. Zaap is as much about the ‘Thai street market experience’ as the quality of the

food and looks destined to become a popular addition to the streets of Minster City. Head chef and owner, Ban Kaewkraikhot, created the chain after moving to Yorkshire from Bangkok. Since opening the first branch in Leeds four years ago, she has now added three more in Nottingham, Newcastle and York. From the outside, this may look a place for the young and trendy – with Zaap’s bright red logo splashed across every window and door. However, don’t be put off – whatever your age. The doors had been open for less than a week when we visited and it was

already attracting a diverse clientele. Bookings are never taken so it can be a case of ‘walk-in and wait’, especially at weekends, but there are two floors with seating for 100 people. My partner Amanda and I squeezed into a tuk tuk and browsed the menu that contained over 80 authentic street food dishes. Against a backdrop of tunes that would sit comfortably on any Thai commercial radio station, our tastebuds were soon dancing to a Bangkok vibe. As is tradition, the dishes – whether Krub Krib (starters) or Tarm Sung (main dishes) – arrived at the table simultaneously.

“Against a backdrop of tunes that would sit comfortably on any Thai commercial radio station, our tastebuds were soon dancing to a Bangkok vibe. Teu, our Zaapster, had recommended Tod Mun Pla (Thai fish cakes) and Sai Grog Zaap (Thai style sour pork sausages) and both were impeccably cooked and presented. Amanda selected a main course from the vegetarian menu and was delighted with her choice of Pad Prik Yourk (tofu stir fried with vegetables, green and red pepper, in a black bean sauce). Seeking a spicier option, I had opted for Pad Nam Prik Pao (chicken stir fried with chilli oil, vegetables, and basil). Neither of us would leave a morsel on the painted plastic plates which, of course, are also synonymous with Thai street food.

And what better sign is there of culinary approval than an empty plate or dish? An excellent meal and evening was rounded off with two superb ‘dezzerts’ – one a famous Thai street food the other distinctively northern English! My caramelised banana – served with vanilla ice cream and squirty cream – was simply gorgeous. My partner’s dish was a product of the Yorkshire Dales – real dairy Brymor ice cream justifiably billed as a ‘must-try’ on the menu! Zaap is open 11am-11pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am-12am Fridays and Saturdays. The midweek lunch menu (available

Mon-Fri 11am-6pm) offers diners the choice of two courses for ÂŁ10, or three for ÂŁ12.95. There is a wide-choice of wines, beers, cocktails, and hot drinks. Zaap 7 Lendal, York, Y01 8AQ Tel: 01904 626691 www.zaapthai.co.uk

Stylish? Naturally ADD NATURAL ELEMENTS TO YOUR URBAN ABODE. BY RACHEL MARTIN. tepping away from the tech-obsessed decor trends that we saw dominate 2018, this year we have moved towards fresh, natural materials such as bronze, copper and concrete. These elements will help bring an organic and serene ambience to any space while reflecting the world around your home. Get some ideas on how to add natural elements to your urban abode here.

S

Rose gold was one of 2018’s most seen decor trends, yet for 2019 we are seeing less gold and more copper accents, along with a mixture of other metals and finishes. With its red and orange tones and overall earthy hue, copper offers a muchneeded breath of fresh air. The copper Gorsley cluster chandelier light is handmade exclusively at Fritz Fryer. Designed and made by a local Artist Blacksmith the copper pendant is a direct result of inspiration from the arts and crafts movement. Fritz Fryer Copper Gorsley Pendant Light by Fritz Fryer Lighting £725 www.fritzfryer.co.uk 76 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

There’s nothing quite as luxurious as a velvet sofa: beautiful, soft, opulent and undeniably cool, it looks good any time of the year. Combining a curved silhouette with sumptuous mustard orange velvet-toned accents, this chair makes a statement addition to any room. With its scalloped edges, this chair features gold tapered legs and a high back to encase you as you relax. This bold statement chair will look great in a reading corner as well as by your dressing table. AUDENZA Scalloped Oyster Velvet Chair £375 www.audenza.com

This classic decorating trend has been around since the beginning of time, but for the upcoming year, jungle prints have been thoroughly refreshed and modernized. And you too will soon enough see leaf patterns in a new light. Printed with eco-friendly inks, this tropical wallpaper is easy to install on any wall type. Mind the Gap Palmeras Anthracite Wallpaper by Decoville £150 www.decoville.co.uk

Though muted colours can help you avoid making spaces feel overwhelming and visually heavy, this is a year where bolder hues are preferred. Richer tones throughout your home can make your more muted and natural-hued furnishings and decorative elements instantly pop and feel anew. Lookout for dramatic reds, statement pinks, bold yellows, and lush greens. The Newington sofa bed in moss green is a stylish yet functional design, transforming from a sophisticated sofa into a comfortable double bed in seconds. Newington Sofa in Green Velvet £1,800 from Habitat www.habitat.co.uk

We are saying goodbye to chrome and polished nickel, and welcome brass accents back into our homes. Brass is a surprisingly warm and subtle alternative to the expected steel accents and will be sure to add an everyday sense of elegance to even the simplest of spaces. Create a soft pool of light in the corner of the living area with the Tobias Floor Light in antique brass. Clean and contemporary in style, it can easily be moved into different positions when needed and looks great in the bedroom, too. Tobias Floor Light in Antique Brass £169 from Atkin and Thyme www.atkinandthyme.co.uk

Some may wonder why concrete has left the construction zone, yet it steps into many homes’ decor. Providing a crisp, clean look that’s easy to complement, concrete isn’t just for countertops. Stylish cement and metallic pots are the perfect home accessory to display your beloved house plants. Created from moulded cement, the round bowl planter has an internal waterproof sealant so is perfect for your herbs or succulents. The neutral tones of the cement combined with the bronze accent colour is perfect for getting on board with the luxe industrial look. Cement and Metallic Bronze Indoor Plant Pot £7.50 Lime Lace www.limelace.co.uk

Similar to tropical patterns and brass decor, incorporating geometric patterns is no new trend. Yet geometric patterns are expected to become a dramatic presence. This is a trend that will help make a bold statement in any room. A chic and easy way to incorporate this pattern into your home decor is by making your walls and floors pop. Tile Mountain’s new Swing range comprises a mix of geometric and stripe shapes. These eye-catching porcelain tiles are available in a choice of blue, beige, multi-colour, and night and day (monochrome with a hint of grey) colourways. GARDEN

Go green this winter USE THE COLD WEATHER AS AN EXCUSE TO BRING THE OUTSIDE, INSIDE. GENEVIEVE BRAUND LOOKS AT THE BEST HOUSE PLANTS TO BRIGHTEN UP YOUR HOME.

ith winter looming, many our gardens will be looking a little bare compared with the bright and blooming summer months. However, colourful plants and vibrant flowers are not, and should not, be reserved for summertime. With the right plants you can create a high-impact but low-maintenance scheme, to lift the spirits on even the darkest of days. And by bringing this nature into the home, there’s no chance they’ll ever be dulled or damaged by that oh-so-inevitable blanket of snow. We’ve narrowed down the best plants to incorporate into your home this winter, and discuss how to display them for maximum impact.

Herb Heaven Whether it’s coriander you crave, for the perfect pico de gallo, or you’re in search of mint for your homemade mojitos, herb gardens make the perfect addition to any kitchen window ledge. Once you’ve chosen the herbs you’d like to include in your mini garden, the easiest way to get things started is to purchase a little baby herb plant that’s ready to grow. These cost as little as 50p in supermarkets, just add sunlight and water!

Primp your Plant Pots You’ve picked your plants, but now it comes to displaying them. For taller floor plants, opt for traditional terracotta pots for a spot of earthiness. Short on space? Consider hanging pots to showcase trailing houseplants such as ferns. And why not try your hand at making your own plant pots by upcycling tins or jars [or old coffee cups like picutred above] to create a unique and personal creation, in colours tailored to suit your space.

GARDEN

Kalanchoë To add a real pop of colour to your room, consider Kalanchoë; a resilient and exotic plant that happily requires very little effort from you. The plant thrives in dry environments and adapts well to temperature changes. Blooming for weeks, even months, at a time, the flowering Kalanchoë makes a pretty addition to any indoor garden.

Aloe Vera Widely known for its healing properties and as an ingredient in many skin care products, aloe vera also makes a striking contrast to the soft furnishings of any home. Its spikey leaves have a geometric quality and add tropical flair to your living or work space. Tolerant of forgetful waterers, the aloe vera is a dessert plant and requires a water every one to two weeks – if only children were so easy to look after!

Peace Lily A long-time favourite of those with and without green fingers, the Peace Lily is a forgiving plant that not only brightens up a living space, but also cleans the air of the room it’s in. The Peace Lily has mastered body language, giving hints to their owner about when it needs watering or more light, and when taken care of correctly, these pretty perennials can live for years.

All-round success at Queen Mary’s Latest GCSE results from Queen Mary’s School, between Ripon and Thirsk, rounded off what has been a full year of success. Special congratulations must go to the girls who have attended Queen Mary’s for over 14 years from the age of two, who have received exceptional results. This year’s excellent results highlight that over one in four entries were awarded the most outstanding Grades 8-9s. Queen Mary’s also celebrates significant value-added scores that measure achievement against predicted grades throughout each girl’s educational journey. Ripon girl, Emilia Jaques is one of the pupils who has attended Queen Mary’s since the age of two. She has achieved Grade 9 in nine subjects. Along with her academic studies, Emilia has had an exciting year as the female BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year with many opportunities to perform on BBC Radio 2’s ‘Friday Night is Music Night’ with Alfie Boe and her beautiful voice has also been heard on a recording with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Within school Emilia has taken on the role of Head Chorister, has achieved Distinction in three instruments in her ABRSM Music Grade 8 examinations and, as a keen and committed sportswoman, she attended the ‘Girls Go Gold’ national sports conference. Many of this year’s leavers with strengths in academic studies, art, music and riding have secured scholarships to attend prestigious sixth forms. These also include Ampleforth, The Mount, Sidcot, Stowe and Uppingham schools. Mrs Carole Cameron, Head of Queen Mary’s School, is delighted: “My warmest congratulations go to all of our leavers. These excellent results are a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the girls and staff, as well as the support of the whole school community.” Queen Mary’s offers a broad curriculum, allowing pupils to pursue their interests within small classes designed to encourage wellbeing and success. The next Open Mornings will take place on Saturday 5 October and Friday 15 November. www.queenmarys.org

The original Austin car that appeared in the 1976 feature film It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet now has pride of place at the World of James Herriot in Thirsk after being spotted for sale in an online auction. The team at the attraction are buzzing after an eventful delivery of the original JK 7443 Austin Big Seven 1938 vehicle, which required hoists to lift it over the rear wall to place it in a newly created presentation space in the garden. The car played a key role in this fondly remembered family film starring John Alderton, Colin Blakey, Lisa Harrow and Bill Maynard, particularly the ‘water splash’ scene where it gets stuck in the river. It was first registered in Eastbourne on 29 March 1938 and cost £139 when road tax was £6. It does 40 miles per gallon with a top speed of 60mph and has 70,000-plus miles on the clock. The World of James Herriot is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day and attracts many coach groups, families and a large following of James Herriot fans. www.worldofjamesherriot.com

Flying start for Sarto A brand new independent for Leeds is poised to fill the empty unit which was Munro House’s Ipsum Vinoteca, on the edge of Quarry Hill, in the former Arts Quarter of the City. Sarto aims to open this Autumn and is the brainchild from two of Leeds’ legendary indies, Laynes Espresso and The Brunswick. So-called because of the building’s history in clothmaking (used by Coss & Morris manufacturers, Hirst & Thackray raincoat makers and Frazer Brothers clothing through the first part of the 20th century), ‘sarto’ is the Italian for ‘tailor’. The lease has been signed, and the owners are planning a unique concept for the venue – the best homemade pasta. Work is very much underway on the unit, but it will be a few weeks before Sarto comes to fruition. It is hoped a Kickstarter project will raise £15,000 to bring in some muchneeded funding. www.kickstarter.com/projects/sartopasta/sarto-pasta Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 97
